Book Description

It is not by accident that you just picked up When God Winks. Whether you call it synchronicity or coincidence, what brought you to this book today is worth remembering. In fact, you may have suspected all along that there is more to coincidence than meets the eye. These seemingly random events are actually signposts that can help you successfully navigate your career, relationships, and interests. SQuire Rushnell shows us that by recognizing our "God Winks," we can use the untapped power of coincidence to vastly improve our lives.

The author applies his compelling theory as to why coincidences exist to fascinating stories in history, sports, medicine, and relationships involving both everyday and famous people including Barbra Streisand, Charles Schulz, Oprah Winfrey, Kevin Costner, Mark Twain, and Presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.

1 out of 5 stars Quite Disappointing.......2007-09-28

This book was extremely disappointing. I was very excited about it. I've had times in my life when I KNOW the Lord has worked and I was hoping this book would help me be more in tune to the Lord's work in my life and help me see specific situations I may have missed. What a joke!!!

The book seems to be more of a manual for how to use coincidences to do what you want and feel good about it. Many of the examples of "God Winks" lead people to do things that our Lord would not approve of (one example being divorce).

But my biggest complaint is that the vast majority of the author's examples of "God Winks" comes from the rich and famous. I got the impression that the author apparently can not even relate to or understand the work of God in the average person's life. This mistake on the author's part could lead to a reader becoming hopeless rather than hopeful that the True God is working in their life.

I did not come away from the reading believing that the author knew and understood the True God of the Bible, though I did gain some benefit from reading the book. Reading it did remind me that God does work in my life in a personal way and that I need to always be looking for that work - and more importantly that I need to acknowledge, cherish and remember that work.

I would like to share two instances that I know God worked in my life. One could be considered a "coincidence" but the other is just God's work. And both are simple, average examples of the Lord working in an ordinary person's life. They do not describe any life-changing events, but they are God's work non-the-less.

1) My car - a Subaru Justy - was doing it's job getting my family of 5 around (two in car seats!). We joked about it being the clown car because we could all squeeze in and it looked funny; all of us piling out. The driver's side seat belt broke. We called to find out how much it would cost to fix and discovered that we really, really could not afford it, but what else could we do? Days later we received a letter in the mail informing us that the seat belts had been recalled and we could have it repaired at a dealership for free. What a BLESSING! This seems like a coincidence (or a "God Wink") but I took it for what it was....the Lord watching over us and taking care of our needs.

2) Shortly before my grandfather died we made a trip to visit him. He was my favorite person in the world. The whole time we were there (as other times before) I would get on to my boys for being loud and rambuctious. My grandfather would sit in his chair in the living room and seemed to be sleeping. He was very frail. I was afraid that my boys would bother him. At one point the boys came bouncing loudly into the room. As I was about to get on to them and scold them for being loud I looked over at my grandfather. He was sitting in his chair laughing! He was wasting away at the end of his life, yet he was enjoying his grandsons' romping around his house. That was pure gold to me. You can't call this a coincidence. You could call it a "God Wink", but after reading Rushnell's book I have an aversion to that term. God did move and speak into my life, but it was absolutely nothing like what Rushnell describes in his book.

I could give many more boring examples of how God has worked in my ordinary life. They probably wouldn't be as appealing as Rushnell's examples because they weren't coincidences on my path to being rich and famous. But they are real examples of a real God working in an ordinary person's life. And they didn't lead me to do something that God would not approve of, quite the opposite. All of the personal experiences I've had with God working in my life have led me away from sin and toward God.

All that to say that if you believe in the God of the Bible don't waste your time reading this book. Instead spend the time really thinking on and praying about how the Lord has worked in your life. Thank Him for it and rejoice!

I really enjoyed reading this book. It is a quick read and has a lot of short stories to illustrate how God is making Himself known in our lives. I came away with the hope that the coincedences in my own life really are signs that God is touching my life.

Movie fans can argue the merits of Rocky vs. Rambo, but no one can accuse Sylvester Stallone of being a couch potato. In Sly Moves, Stallone recounts the training methods that turned him into one of the true Hollywood hard-bodies of all time, tailoring the best and worst of what he's learned from forty years in the gym and testing trendy diets into a simple (3-hour-a-week) workout/eating program anyone can follow.

Stallone mixes in plenty of personal tales from his storied career along with practical advice, including a three-day look inside the life of an action hero approaching age 60: what he eats, when he works out, what famous people he bumps into at his private Beverly Hills gym and the L.A. hot spots where he does dinner. Sly might help you tighten up those abs with three kinds of crunches, but odds are the new six pack won't get you a table next to him at Spago. Still, all the trappings of celebrity aside, you only have to check out the photos of him demonstrating his "Rambo pulldowns," "Rocky chins," or other exercises ("moves") he recommends to see he knows a thing or two about staying fit. As for how to "gain will power" and "live your dream," you could do a lot worse than listen to a guy of humble beginnings who willed himself into everything he ever dreamed of becoming—one hammer curl at a time. --Patrick Jennings

Book Description

Are you ready to be a contender? Sylvester Stallone's action–oriented program for getting fit and eating right is also a revealing portrait of one of Hollywood's biggest stars.

Sly Moves is more than just a handbook on fitness and nutrition. It's a provocative and candid inside look at the trials and triumphs of one of Hollywood's most famous stars. Throughout his career, Sly has always been body conscious, and as he experimented with intense training methods for various films, he has learned – often the hard way – what works and what definitely doesn't. His goal here is to help readers change harmful fitness habits, learn to counter reckless eating, and appreciate who they are even when they don't feel much like action heroes.

Part 1 is a history of Sylvester Stallone's physique, as the Rocky star shares stories about his being bullied as a child, finding comfort and strength at the gym, and then later, the wild ride of fad diets, crash–training regimens and workout disasters that fringed on obsession.

Part 2, The Sly Moves workout, outlines four exercise programs: classic, advanced, women's and hardcore. The workouts only require a commitment of about three hours a week (exactly the same amount of time Sly works out).

The Sly Moves eating plan (Part 3) is Sly's nutrition guide, highlighted by a unique meal plan for a lifetime of good eating.

Part 4 gives Sly an opportunity to inspire and encourage readers to make Sly Moves part of a long–term picture of health, fitness and wellbeing, with tips on everything from keeping goals and relaxation techniques to lessons learned from The Contender.

how else are you going to learn how to look like rambo? this combined with arnold's encyclopedia of bodybuilding is perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Sly Moves is pure inspiration.......2007-04-17

This is a down to earth book. Stallone writes in a simple straight forward style that is very clear and easy to follow and read. He's one of Hollywood's best writers and should go down in history as one of our great national treasures. I'm sure philadelphia would agree. His workout format is truly inspiring as well as all the difficulties he's had to overcome to master his own challenges and bring his body into discipline. I really like the book and when I bought it for me, my husband picked it up and couldn't put it down. There are tons of pictures and advice as well as behind the scenes every day life stuff he talks about here and there. I've worked hard at discovering for myself what works and what doesn't work and this book only reaffirmed lots of the good habits and conclusions I've already been doing. I've implemented some of his training into my own program and noticed an immediate difference, especially with working the abs. The diet section, his recommendations on how to approach the food stuffs, is down to earth and very practical. I already had been eating healthfully this way for some time. When I read it his approach, I reached a conclusion that his method has been tried and tested because I went through the same ropes to learn the same things. It doesn't take a genius and he's figured out the common sense way to make it simple and with results. However, Stallone's indulgences for sweets is evident and he allows himself one day a week for a splurge. I never do this and so perhaps my own diet is stricter than his! The book is written as both an instructional book for beginners, intermediate strength building athletes and has some advanced exercises for advanced training. He has great exercises for building up the core and working the interior back muscles along the spine and not just the cosmetic aspects of the back. These are great exercises, especially for someone like me who needs to strengthen the back and spine. This book is also an inspirational fitness book. I think what strikes me most about the book is the personality that bubbles out from the pages - like the essence of the man and his strength, energy, and great sense of humor - it all comes off the pages and seems to reach people on this basic level - like his Rocky character - no frills and straight from the heart. He even goes into the pitfalls of self competition and what he learned along the way. Love it. The book is an easy to read book and even includes a section for women's fitness and features Stallone's beautiful wife, Jennifer. It's a good book to add to your fitness library. I read it and turn to it almost daily for tidbits of information to add to my workouts and health regime.

Regarding the latest stint about steroids - well that has nothing to do with the book. The book was written several years ago and there is nothing about it that is not true in terms of fitness. I give the book a five star rating because of its content alone. I don't compare it to something outside of it's subject matter like steriods, which is outside of the book's content. I rated the book by its own merit and not because I agree with or don't agree with the current news lines about steriods. That is a topic and circumstance outside the topic of the book.

4 out of 5 stars Sly Moves.......2007-03-19

I started this book expecting it to be another body builder babbling on about who knows what, but it was suprisingly down to earth and interesting.

I like this book, but I take it with a grain of salt now that he was found holding growth hormone in Australia, which makes it way easier to stay lean. Older guys are definitely purchasers of this book & without mentioning HGH it is a little misleading.

General principles & stories are good though.

5 out of 5 stars Memorable advice........2007-03-17

Unlike most celebrities who write diet or exercise books, this is from someone who really knows their stuff. The proof is up there on the screen.

The book starts off with an account of his movies that I was tempted to skip but found that it all relates to exercise. He comes across as a very sincere guy. One story that will stick with me is when Stallone was working on the recent Contender TV series. He threw out all the junk food the boxers were eating. When they complained to him he told them "Look. I'm in better shape than you and I'm not even a real fighter. And I'm twice your age!" You could learn a lot from a guy like this. I'm glad he wrote the book.

Once you discover a really good book that works well & easy for you, all you want to do is RAVE about it!! With this outstanding book from one of America's greats - Brian's Tracy, why not? It really "does exactly as it says on the label" (or front cover in this case.)

You only have to briefly scan all of the reviews below to see that this is a powerful book that works. His message in simple & obvious, but with this book Brian shows you why & how so many of us don't or can't succeed in our ambitions to be happy & successful, when it is the right of everyone to enjoy life to the full.

If you've read his other book "GOALS!" first, then don't despair. This book has exactly the same message but goes much deeper into the workings of how health, wealth, happiness & peace of mind can all be achieved, providing you with a dearth of inspiration & motivation to try it out instantly & get going straight way.

This book is a little larger & a little harder going than "Goals!", only in that the chapters aren't broken down into convenient sections where you can pause & take a breath/ Nonetheless, it is written in such an enthusiastic way that keeps you interested all the way.

This ought to be the very last book you buy on the subject, but before you read (& more importantly re-read) it, please make sure you have a fresh note-book (preferably A4) & pen to hand. The book is jam packed with all the essential information to kick you off in the right direction the minute you start reading.

If you've got this far already then you need this book, look no further, your intuition was right in looking here. You won't be disappointed. It's quite a long book but with a little perseverance, you too will be glad you bought & read it. Check out the Amazon sales ranking to see how high this book is valued by thousands of likeminded customers.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I could give this book ten stars!.......2007-09-02

I wish I could give this book ten stars! I've read most of the great motivational books - Napolean Hill's Think and Grow Rich and Master Keys to Riches, and Norman Vincent Peal's Positive Mental Attitude, plus dozens more, but this book summarizes them all. If you are looking for a quick fix, this book is not it. It is a book which will make you think, examine, question. Take it in small bites. My volume is underlined, starred, notes in the margins. This is a great summary of the best of the best. If you are in a hurry to reach your goals, this is the book you need to start with. However, it is NOT a fast process.

If you truly wish to turn your life around, this is the book for you. If you are not sure of where you want to go, this is the book for you. If you feel that YOU are different, that LIFE has given you some bad blows, this is the book for you. START HERE!

Mr. Tracy will take you by the hand. Help you to eliminate your excuses. Help you to examine your true goals. Help you to lay out your plans. He will not let you make exuses but will hold up the mirror of self examination so you can see where you are fooling yourself (but no one else, really). He will help you face YOUR truth, but will also kindly provide the path you seek to a better life.

I am planning to buy this book for all of my employees, although I'm not sure all of them will "get it." You make your own life; you are responsible for where you are right now...and for where you will be in the future. I am also planning to contact Mr. Tracy to see if he will be a guest speaker at my organization.

Folks, if you can buy only one book, then this is the one. I've read most of the other major players....Hill, Stone, Peale, Mandigo, Clawson, Collins....and they're all great. Many of them are at your local library. But for the very small price of this book, I recommend that you buy Maximum Achievement so that you, too, can underline, write, reread, make notes, and totally consume this book. This is not a paid advertisement. I have never met Mr. Tracy nor have ever read any of his other books (however, I intend to now).

If you want to make the most of your life, this is the book which will head you down that road.

5 out of 5 stars LIFE CHANGING BOOK.......2007-04-17

I've read plenty of self-help books but I've never had a book make such a huge impact on my life. Brian does a great job of showing you simple strategies to help change every aspect of your life. My book is highlighted throughout and I wouldn't take anything for it. It is my self-help bible!

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and uplifting book.......2007-04-05

This book motivates, stimulates and helps you focus your mind on meeting your goals. Words simply cannot describe how truly valuable a book like this is. Brian Tracy helps you in defining your goals and meeting them. I believe that this book ranks among best personal achievement and self improvement manual on the market.

This is an outstanding book that is presented in a clear and precise way that is beneficial to anyone in any walk of life. This book motivates, stimulates and helps you focus your mind on meeting your goals. Brian Tracey helps you in defining and refining your goals and guides you on how to effectively achieve them. He methodically guides you to organize your thoughts, think positively and then get into the action habit.

It is truly an inspiring and uplifting book. Therefore if you feel lost in life, with no direction and need upliftment, Brian Tracey will help you to discover what your ultimate passion in life is, thus helping to start living meaningful and purposeful life.

I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about changing their life for the better. However, the book can only provide guidance and it is up to the reader to put into practice the advice and wisdom from this fantastic book.

WOW. I knew our words hold power but what I didn't realize is just how powerful our words are in the Spirit realm and here on Earth. Remember Jesus told His Disciples in Matt 18:18 that they had power to bind and loose (release). I believe this is still true today because Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. It makes sense that if we are called to do "even greater things" and since "every careless word spoken" will be judged then we ought to be very careful when and how we communicate. This book will Rock your world! Read it and give it away to friends.

    Book Description

The first overview of the revolutionary advertising techniques and media needed to successfully reach today's consumer.

Twenty years ago an advertiser could reach eighty percent of the American population with just three television commercials. Today it takes 150. Advertising is suffering because of the sheer amount of it, the lack of innovation within traditional advertising formats, and the power that media fragmentation and technology give to consumers to tune out the noise.

The new buzzwords are guerrilla, stealth, ambush, buzz, viral, grassroots, wildfire, and ambient. This book is the first to harness them into an integrated communications approach, as Tom Himpe explains and illustrates:
    • the four driving forces for getting close to the consumer: be personal; go where the competition isn't; make the brand invisible; be unpredictable;
    • the eight techniques—from consumer involvement to harnessing the power of the senses—for employing these driving forces, illustrated with campaigns from across the world;
    • the four types of campaign that make use of this new knowledge. 435 color illustrations.

    Book Description

Our self-conception derives mostly from our own experience. We believe ourselves to be conscious, rational, social, ethical, language-using, political agents who possess free will. Yet we know we exist in a universe that consists of mindless, meaningless, unfree, nonrational, brute physical particles. How can we resolve the conflict between these two visions?

In Freedom and Neurobiology, the philosopher John Searle discusses the possibility of free will within the context of contemporary neurobiology. He begins by explaining the relationship between human reality and the more fundamental reality as described by physics and chemistry. Then he proposes a neurobiological resolution to the problem by demonstrating how various conceptions of free will have different consequences for the neurobiology of consciousness.

In the second half of the book, Searle applies his theory of social reality to the problem of political power, explaining the role of language in the formation of our political reality. The institutional structures that organize, empower, and regulate our lives-money, property, marriage, government-consist in the assignment and collective acceptance of certain statuses to objects and people. Whether it is the president of the United States, a twenty-dollar bill, or private property, these entities perform functions as determined by their status in our institutional reality. Searle focuses on the political powers that exist within these systems of status functions and the way in which language constitutes them.

Searle argues that consciousness and rationality are crucial to our existence and that they are the result of the biological evolution of our species. He addresses the problem of free will within the context of a neurobiological conception of consciousness and rationality, and he addresses the problem of political power within the context of this analysis.

A clear and concise contribution to the free-will debate and the study of cognition, Freedom and Neurobiology is essential reading for students and scholars of the philosophy of mind.

3 out of 5 stars Musings on Free Will.......2007-05-13

These essays are a low-voltage rehash of ideas set out in Searle's earlier books, where his one-mind concept of consciousness is set out much more lucidly. His musings on Free Will lack focus and clarity and the author ends up without taking a clear position on a topic where his brilliant philosophical studies should have allowed him to enlighten his readers.

    2 out of 5 stars Superficial.......2007-03-08

You'd expect a book with this title to actually have some neurobiology in it, but you'd be disappointed. This slim volume consists of two diffuse philosophical essays, one about free will, and the other about political power. Both are simplistic, in my view, and don't bring any new ideas to the table. The essay on free will was the most interesting, but despite the book's title, the author doesn't bring in any neurobiology. Instead he basically says that neurobiology should be involved, and possibly quantum mechanical randomness, because that's the only nondeterministic mechanism he can think of that might be related to the nondeterminism of free will. That particular idea is explored much more deeply in Roger Penrose's book "The Emperor's New Mind," which despite its flaws, is a much deeper and more solid book.

4 out of 5 stars Searle finally writes about man as "zoon politikon".......2006-12-24

This book is 3 chapters: an intro chapter, a chapter on free will & neurobiology, and a chapter on political power. The book was previously just two lectures Searle gave in 2001 at Sorbonne. Eventually, Searle's editor published these two lectures in France without Searle's involvement leading Searle to end a quaint story saying, "It is the first time in my life that I published a book I did not know that I had written" (pg. 2). Searle added the intro chapter for his edition. Although the first essay on free will is meager progress on what Searle says elsewhere (see Searle's Rationality in Action (Jean Nicod Lectures)), the 2nd chapter on political power is a promising addition to what Searle has already hinted at in The Construction of Social Reality and Mind, Language, and Society : Philosophy in the Real World (he admits this fact, see pg. 33).

SEARLE ON FREE WILL & NEUROBIOLOGY
Searle puts in the title "Reflections" because he admits to not giving answers, especially to the problem of free will. Instead Searle wants to muse: "I cannot give you a solution to the problem of free will, but I hope to be at least able to state the problem in a precise enough form so that we can see what possible solutions would look like (pg. 31).
Searle is frustrated by free will and neurobiology because free will seems to be a phenomenological experience that is irreducible to epiphenomena, yet how can we be free to will when conscious states are realized in neurological states which are "completely deterministic"? (pg. 38 see all 40). But the notion of the freedom of the will does not go away, according to Searle, "if you say to the waiter `Look, I am a determinist - che sará sará, I'll just wait and see what I order,' that refusal to exercise free will is only intelligible to you as one of your actions if you take it to be an exercise of your free will" (pg. 43).
At this point Searle offers 2 hypotheses: (1) free will is an illusion and the deterministic physical laws which govern our neurons also govern consciousness i.e. epiphenomenalism; (2) "we have to suppose that the logical features of volitional consciousness of the entire system have effects on the elements on the system. This is true even though the system is composed entirely of the elements" (pg. 63). Thus, "the passage from one state to the next is explained by the rational thought processes of the initial state of neurons/consciousness. At any instant the total state of consciousness is fixed by the behavior of the neurons, but from on instant to the next the total state of the system is not causally sufficient to determine the next state. Free will, if it exists at all, is a phenomenon in time" (pg. 65). Searle's struggle to make free will somehow a feature (is "feature the right word, Searle sometimes says "realized" but we might want to ask for clarity) of neurophysiology has been on difficult grounds since at least Thomas Nagel wrote that we can know everything about a bat except what it is like to be a bat (see "What is it like to be a bat?" in Nagel's book Mortal Questions (Canto)). Searle wants "Hypothesis 2" to be correct but he concludes that it is currently "a mess" (pg. 77).

    SEARLE ON DEONTIC POWER
Before this essay, Searle never had anything to say about politics (this is not completely true: see little-known book "The campus war; a sympathetic look at the university in agony). Searle says, "When I was an undergraduate, it was widely believed that political philosophy was dead" (pg. 13). However, after writing about institutional reality as collective intentionality in "The Construction of Social Reality" he decided that this chapter "Social Ontology and Political Power" would apply his linguistic account of institutional reality to the "special problem of political power" (pg. 33).
Searle begins by saying that "our tradition of political philosophy" has been "unsatisfying" because it doesn't ask the proper questions first: instead of "What is a just society" we should ask "What is a society in the first place?" (pg. 80) Searle describes a group of numbered and ordered propositions which develop through his essay; I will quote them here in truncated form (hopefully without losing meaningfulness).
    (1) All political power is a matter of social functions, and for that reason all political power is deontic power (2) Because all political power is a matter of status functions, all political power, though exercised from above, comes from below (3) Even though the individual is the source of all political power, by his or her ability to engage in collective intentionality; all the same, the individual, typically, feels powerless (4) The system of political status functions works at least in part because recognized deontic powers provide desire-independent reasons for action (5) It is a consequence...that there is a distinction between political power and political leadership (6) Because political powers are matters of status functions they are, in large part, linguistically constituted (7) In order for a society to have a political reality it needs several other distinguishing features:...a distinction between the public and the private sphere with the political as part of the public sphere,...the existence of nonviolent group conflicts, and...group conflicts must be over social goods within a structure of deontology (8) A monopoly on armed violence is an essential presupposition of government.

Anyone serious about studying the extensions of Searle's thought must buy this book primarily for the brief essay on political philosophy. His essay on free will, Searle admits, is largely conceptually at an impasse.

5 out of 5 stars The Will to Power book is better than Prozac and Zoloft.......2007-03-21

This book is a better anti-depressant and energizer than any antidepressant in the market. This book will give you more physical and mental strength than any visit to your therapist, any prozac and zoloft. I say this because i suffer from depression and low self esteem, and any time i read this book, it makes me want to lift weights and do something great. So if you feel low, and want to overcome your low self esteem, try to read this book. This book is so great that i have read it 9 times already :-)

    5 out of 5 stars Nachlass.......2007-02-17

Nietzsche did not publish this book, it is a collection of scribbled notebook pages thrown together, some of which were taken from the garbage at his room at Sils Maria, so read it as such. It is not the final development of his philosophy, and many of the ideas in here are abandoned by Nietzsche. This is not the unfinished book he was planning, this at best is a supliment to ideas found in his other books. If you are studing Nietzsche, this is not a place to begin. This is the place to end. One must know what Nietzsche published to be able to recognize what aphorisms in this book he abandoned and did not use, and what aphorisms he modified and published in other books.

On the other hand, if you are not studying Nietzsche, and just want to read a thought provoking work of art, this is great.

this book got ol fred in a lot o trouble.it was the "da vinci code" of his time or vice versa.its hardcore philosophy to most but i had no trouble with it.the 2 key phrases that stirred up all the stink were "god is dead" for obvious reasons.and"the world is a will to power and nothing besides and you are a will to power and nothing besides".its a great book.many people who were into philosophy read this like even down to the pop scene with jim morrison and paula cole.[everyone always says "who"?].she did the hit song "i dont want to wait".

    3 out of 5 stars Outdated Edition.......2006-07-14

Though the translation from the 1960s is very fine, this text is based on German source texts that are widely regarded now as corrupt and wildly misleadingly edited. Far better to read the more recent collection drawn from the same material:

5 out of 5 stars A Terrifying, Powerful, Seductive, and DANGEROUS Book.......2006-03-27

"The Will to Power" is a terrifying and powerful book from a brilliant mind, F. Nietszche. In the wrong hands this book could be very dangerous, and in fact, when it found its way into the hands of a young Adolf Hitler it did become very dangerous. As I was reading this book I felt like I was reading the blueprint for the National Socialist Party. I am fully aware that Nietszche would have abhorred many elements of Nazism (anti-semitism, nationalism), but the underlying themes of his philosophy can easily be found in the life and ideas of Hitler. The idea of Art as the highest value, as the profoundest expression of the soul, the emphasis on aesthetics, on health, the complete disregard of morality in pursuit of goals, contempt for the weak, etc. What makes this book so terrifying is the thought that one man's pen, one man's creation, could cause so much utter destruction and chaos. If Nietszche knew what the end result of his philosophical creations would be (the annihiliation of 50 million people), what would he think? Would he regret writing it? All in all, this book is a phenomenal read, fantastic ideas and critiques, with the usual beautiful expressions Nietszche employs. This and Thus Spake Zarathustra are my two favorite Nietszche books, and I would recommend The Will to Power as a good starting book for Nietszche readers. It made the ideas in his other books, such as in Zaruthstra, much more clearer.

      5 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2007-07-03

I ordered three face reading books to try to get as much information as I could. This book by far was the best. She adds a bunch of humor. This book is very well written and easy to read. I recommend this to all who are curious about what the face means. I am very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars Useful and Insightful.......2005-12-10

After reading The Power of Face Reading, I am shocked by the response from "Almost Useless". In her book Rosetree asserts that we all have various challenges as well as styles with which we excell at, and I think Rosetree does an excellent job of expressing our different styles for work, spending money, communication, etc. with great compassion and depth. This is not a "too positive spin on every negative interpretation"; it's more a realistic way of looking at our strenghts and weaknesses.

I also firmly disagree with "Almost Useless"'s assertion that some of the interpretations are "just inaccurate." I have done many readings after reading the book, for friends and people that I've just met, and everyone remarks how surprisingly accurate they are! Rosetree also points out that the traits of our face reveal our propensity for a certain style of being. We are all human and can choose to behave in other ways as we choose. Knowing what are preferences are can help us use them with more strength, and to also gain understanding for the strengths and propensities of others. Brilliant for relationships!

In terms of "putting it all together" for doing face readings, I found this to be no problem. Like I said, I started doing readings for friends and new people I met right away. Rosetree also explicity states to set an intention to be of service, and begin with the features that strike you the most, and then notice what you notice next and go from there. This is what I've adhered to and what has made my readings so successful.

Lastly, I would be cautious with the review titled "Gems for Tabliod and Intellectuals." I might chuckle at these having not read the book. Rosetree's book provides much more depth than these quotes reveal. The book shows us that there are many ways to be in the world, and the beauty is that we can choose. I find it powerfully useful to know my style preferences at my very core.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the best!.......2005-12-03

I know this book. I know this author. Rose Rosetree is a woman of the highest integrity and she is a great force. She's been on this path for many years, researching ancient studies and particularly refining the hidden traits found in faces. Each one of her books is a gift. But the wisdom contained in this one, The Power of Face Reading, showers the reader with clues and tips on discovering the very essence of, say, co-workers, first dates, celebrities, politicians -- any person with whom you might come face to face. For those with a sense of wonder and a hunger to know more, this is an easy read.

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing insights.......2005-12-02

I found this book, like all the ones I've read by Rose Rosetree, to be witty, insightful, and very useful. When reading this book, keep in mind that reading faces isn't just a formula, which is a point that Ms. Rosetree makes. The whole face needs to be considered, since it is a reflection of the soul as a whole. I use face reading often, and it's amazing how accurate it is. In addition to the companion book WRINKLES ARE GOD'S MAKEUP, I strongly suggest reading AURA READING THROUGH ALL YOUR SENSES. Combining aura reading with face reading is a very powerful tool and provides a far more complete picture.

      3 out of 5 stars Almost useless.......2005-05-02

The author tries so hard not to offend anybody, that she puts too positive spin on every possibly negative interpretation and overemphasizes what would already be considered as a positive one. Also, I found the most interpretations just inaccurate. Examples from nose chapter:
      short nose - workaholic
long nose - talent for planning and strategy
straight nose - you work systematically
      arched nose - creativity
      ...
Ok, of course you are supposed to interpret everything and put it all together, eliminating contradictions on the way, but the book falls short on instructions how to do that. There should be a chapter titled "putting it together" where the author should explain the process of face reading: what to look first? how to determine basic information about a person and go from there? Instead the book focuses on details without giving you the big picture.

"Old simply isn't what it used to be," writes gerontologist Ken Dychtwald, bestselling author of Age Wave. In the 20th century, the number of Americans ages 65 and older increased from 3 million to 33 million. This number is likely to double by 2035! After 30 years in the field of aging, Dychtwald is convinced that "'Age Power' will rule the 21st century" and that "dramatic anti-aging breakthroughs" in supernutrition, hormone replacement, gene therapy, bionics, and organ cloning will be discovered in the near future.

This all sounds like wonderful news, except that Dychtwald fears that "we are woefully unprepared" for the aging of the boomers. He sounds a wake-up call to "the five social train wrecks we need to prevent." For example, society will face epidemics of chronic diseases such as Alzheimer's (14 million Americans will have it by the mid-21st century). Tens of millions will live their long, last years in poverty. And living longer will be worthless if the elderly spend their last decades doing little more than watching television--40 million retirees average 43 hours a week of TV now!

Age Power describes the aging-related dangers ahead of us and solutions (both social and personal) for preventing them. "Tips to age-proof your life" at the end of many chapters help you put the points into action. "Many of the painful, punishing challenges of old age could be prevented if informed choices were made earlier in life," says Dychtwald, and although this serious book is not easy reading, it will help you make much more informed choices. --Joan Price

      Book Description

In this break-through book, Dr. Ken Dychtwald, the leading authority on the aging of America, uses more than twenty-five years of study to explore how extraordinary demographic and economic shifts are causing the emergence of Age Power-a powerful new maturity. The largest generation in history, the baby boomers, will now routinely live well beyond their eighties and nineties as the "new old," influencing all of our daily lives.

Dychtwald explains how unprepared we are for the challenges of a new era in which the priorities will be set based on the needs and desires of the elderly. He surveys how we each must make individual decisions right now to "age proof" our families and ourselves.

"This book, like all that Ken Dychtwald writes and says, offers a true education into the issues we all face as we age."-President Jimmy Carter

"A powerful look into what you need to know today to understand and protect your tomorrows."-Suze Orman

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "The future is coming and it is older than you think".......2005-09-20

This is an extremely interesting and important book. It seeks to identify the major social trend of the human future, and indicate ways it can be shaped for the benefit of us all.
The dramatic rise in the average length of life which took place in the twentieth century is according to Ken Dychtwald going to continue in the future. The great cohort of the Baby Boomers, seventy- six million strong is moving into 'Old Age' and they will bring with them new demands and even a new definition of the condition of 'Old Age'.
As the author sees it we are moving toward a 'gerontocracy' where the older segments of the population will have more and more power, not only in the market- place, but in determining the values and priorities of society as a whole.
For Dychtwald the fact that more and more people will live longer and longer lives, and will be an increasingly large proportion of the population raises challenges for Humanity as a whole of a kind we have not faced before.
Will Old Age become as it is for so many now a story of chronic illness, increasing disability? Or will the new technologies and medicines that are emerging enable for most a transformation where not only the age of old age will be pushed backward, but where a new ' cyclic' kind of life- style will begin with people starting new careers, new lives, new worlds of interest in old age?
The questions are many and Dychtwald provides a text which is tremendously rich in information and suggestions.
He points to the fact that the United States is not now really preparing itself for this dramatic demographic change. And he indicates that nonetheless many prescient and active individuals are moving toward extending their lives in a healthier and better way.
There are many questions raised by the books arguments that I cannot begin to address in this review. One is the question of what happens to the human spirit , the human power of innovation, the whole feeling of hope in life when there is in effect a world of older generations only, with so little youth in it?
Other questions I have relate to the overall purpose and meaning of lives seemingly dedicated to their endless extension and pleasure. And here I should say Dychtwald is very aware of the necessity of creating futures in which people ' give' to others, find meaning in their lives through helping.
On the whole I am I think a bit less optimistic than the author of this work. Perhaps it is because I recently spent time , over a month, watching an elderly relative receiving the most advanced medical care , which did not prevent her suffering and decline.
I have no doubt that the future will have many more people who live longer and healthier lives. But it seems to me at this point anyway that it will also have many more people living in conditions of chronic pain and disability.
I too despite the 'vision' that is presented so competently here cannot in my heart cry out, "Brave new world that has so many old people in it."

      4 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2002-11-12

A very thoughtful book. Paints a vivid portrait of the major issues we will be facing this century. I highly recommend it for anyone seeking to understand what future demographics has in store for us, and how we should prepare for it.

5 out of 5 stars Are you worried about your parents? Your own aging?.......2002-08-28

A book everyone would benefit from reading. It's a MUST read. Not only are the issues well presented with clear and insightful facts, but thoughtful answers are presented - solutions we can all begin to pursue. I didn't realize, as educated as I am, that I knew so little about this issue. Great wake up call!

      1 out of 5 stars Socialism at it's core.......2002-01-16

After reading this book at the insistence of a college I have come to the conclusion that this is nothing more than another
attempt to force "lite" socialism down our throats with fear mongering. The good doctor is kind enough to scare people
into believing in his utopian remedies. What ever happened to individual responsibility? This work was so self serving and liberal in its content that I wish I could give it a quarter of a star.

5 out of 5 stars Military Preparedness in the Battle of Aging.......2000-11-02

This book maps out the terrain that 76 million people are now entering. The social implications are dealt with at length. The thought of living in poverty in one's 'Golden Years' should sound an alarm for boomers who are addicted to consumption and worse yet the 'Plastic Enabler'. I have purchased copies for my siblings whose devil may care attitudes of today presage a painful tommorrow. Definitive studies on the physical effects of aging are being done by companies like Geron Corp.whose "telomerase" technology could reveal a basis for aging and the slowing or reversal of its effects.
