Lois Ehlert, beloved illustrator of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and many other bold, beautiful picture books has outdone herself with this gorgeous (seriously breathtaking) celebration of butterfly metamorphosis. "Out in the fields, eggs are hidden from view, / clinging to leaves with butterfly glue. / Soon caterpillars hatch. They creep and chew. / Each one knows what it must do." As the gentle rhyme unfolds, we turn the small, partial pages that form the larger spread of fabulous foliage in this lush, oversized book. Before our eyes, the eggs turn to caterpillars, the caterpillars to cases, the cases to lovely butterflies. "They pump their wings, get ready to fly, then hungry butterflies head for the sky." The colors become increasingly dazzling, each butterfly springing to life with Ehlert's color-soaked cut-paper magic. Several pages of background material conclude the book, labeling different kinds of butterflies at different stages of development, from the buckeye butterfly to the painted lady to the monarch. A "Butterfly Information" page clearly labels butterfly anatomy and answers basic question about these fascinating fluttery insects, a "Flower Identification" page showcases butterfly-attracting flowers such as the purple coneflower (echinacea), phlox, and lantana, and the last page offers a few pointers on growing a butterfly garden. (Ages 3 to 6) --Karin Snelson

Book Description

Every spring, butterflies emerge and dazzle the world with their vibrant beauty. But where do butterflies come from? How are they born? What do they eat--and how?
With a simple, rhyming text and glorious color-drenched collage, Lois Ehlert provides clear answers to these and other questions as she follows the life cycle of four common butterflies, from their beginnings as tiny hidden eggs and hungry caterpillars to their transformation into full-grown butterflies. Complete with butterfly and flower facts and identification tips, as well as a guide to planting a butterfly garden, this butterfly book is like no other.

Lois Ehlert takes you on a colorful, intriguing story about the life cycle of a butterfly. Excellent for art students at any level! Text is simple enough for preschoolers and can be enjoyed through the elementary grades. Enjoy this exciting trip through nature and its wonders!

5 out of 5 stars But Where do Caterpillars Come From?.......2006-09-12

This is a beautiful and very clever book. Pages are cocooned within larger pages, with individual illustrations blending seamlessly into the background illustrations. Like the natural world itself, this book rewards the patient observer, with rich details on the surface and others folded in more subtly. Your kids will be focused in on a little book within the big book, as the caterpillar goes on its journey. It makes the launch to the story within the bigger background pages all the more dynamic, striking as the shift from Kansas to Oz.

It starts with the eggs "hidden from view,/ clinging to leaves with butterfly glue." As we turn the pages of a little book enshrouded in the bigger book, we see the caterpillars hatch, "each one knows what it must do," and we follow the path to metamorphosis. Ultimately, the reader will be rewarded with multiple beautiful butterflies launching up towards the sky, a nice Lepidopterian metaphor for the developmental adventures in store for our little ones. It's a good job of story-telling when we know exactly where the story is going but still find ourselves awestruck.

Finally, as if Ms. Ehlert hadn't done enough, we get several pages at the end on butterfly identification, with information on colors, wingspans shown in actual size, the corresponding caterpillars that precede the butterflies, and the like. We get flower information, and then tips on growing your own butterfly garden. Nice stuff.

Get this book, drill it for a few night-night times, and then take your toddlers to a butterfly pavilion to see the real deal. Good times.

5 out of 5 stars Color,color,color!.......2006-03-20

As usual, Lois Ehlert stimulates and educates the young reader about the mysteries of caterpillars to butterflies. Not only are the colors absolutely stunning, she provides factual information about different species. This book was a fabulous preparation for my classroom of small children as they watched their own caterpillars prepare for their magical transformation!

5 out of 5 stars A Life's Journey.......2005-07-27

Waiting for Wings is a picture book showing the life cycle of a butterfly. The story uses tantalizing pictures and simple words to explain how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. The book takes the reader through the stages of the caterpillar's life. Once the caterpillar has become a butterfly the story changes to how a butterfly lives its life. The illustrations pull the reader into this book. The print is large and easy to read for young reader. The text also rhymes for two pages at a time. As the caterpillar grows the pages become larger, until the butterfly hatches. As the butterfly begins its flight the pages are full size. The illustrations and page sizes are wonderful for young readers. This book also contains identification pages on butterflies and the flowers they eat.

5 out of 5 stars Toddlers and Babies, too!.......2004-05-24

I have a three year old daughter who must be read to before sleeping. I also have a three month old baby girl who is often in the bed with us while we read. Often, the baby is restless and cries before we finish our books. Waiting for Wings is a fabulous solution. I find this interesting AND educational for my toddler. In addition, the colors are bright and contrasting, allowing my baby to be entertained while the book is read.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful Book.......2007-05-15

As a school teacher, I found a wonderful use for this book in my classroom. My 6th grade history class studies the Holocaust and was participating in the Houston Holocaust Museum's Butterfly Project. This book helped my students understand some of the feelings and problems faced by children housed at Terezin Concentration Camp during WWII.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece!.......2007-03-08

It is a historical masterpiece of creative resistance during a horrible period when part of mankind became monsters and trough this book we can see how children and adolescents lived with sensitivity and hope!

5 out of 5 stars Art Commemorating an Event.......2006-11-10

I thought this book was very nicely done with regard to graphics and written elements. It really gives you an insight into how people deal with tragedies in their lives, and the process they take to rebuild them. Very inspirational, as well as informative.

1 out of 5 stars Why I Didn't Like This Book.......2006-05-31

For some people, this book might have been great, but I found it rather boring. I just felt that I really didn't connect with the book like I do with so many others. Hey, I'm not trying to make it sound bad, it's just that this book might not be too exciting (especially when you have to write about it!)

5 out of 5 stars An emotional fantastic history lesson.......2005-11-24

I never saw another butterfly is an incredible collection drawings and poems written by children and adolescents in the Terezin concentration camp. The first hand emotional reactions to the torture and horror of the Holocaust is expressed in this book. This is a fantastic history lesson for young readers as well as adults to the horrifying Holocaust experience. The story of the children's teacher Friedl Dicer-Brandeis is incredible, as they define her as a gentle and kind woman, who ironically studied art in Germany. I highly recommend this book for any library and it is a must have for Language Arts and History teachers.

Lying in bed one moonlit night, Monique awakens to see what she thinks is a little ghost sitting at the foot of her bed, petting her cat. In the time that her French village has been occupied by Nazi troops, Monique has come to believe that nothing can surprise her anymore. But when she discovers that the little ghost is in fact a Jewish girl named Sevrine, who is living in a hidden room in Monique's own basement, she is very surprised indeed! The two become secret friends, whispering and giggling late at night after their families have gone to bed. An unfortunate and alarming moment of discovery by a neighbor forces the girls to reveal their friendship to Monique's mother, who has been harboring Sevrine's family and others throughout the Nazi occupation.

Based on the true experiences of the author's great aunt, Marcel Solliliage, this poignant story is a good introduction to the terrors of Nazism, racism, and World War II. The emphasis is on simple friendship and quiet heroism, with an occasional lapse into clichéd metaphor (butterfly as symbol of freedom). Any child can relate to the bewilderment the two friends experience in the face of prejudice. Patricia Polacco has written and illustrated many other picture books, including Chicken Sunday and Pink and Say. (Ages 6 to 9) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

Since the Tall Boots--the Nazis--have marched into Monique's small French village, terrorizing it, nothing surprises her. Until the night Monique encounters "the little ghost" sitting at the end of her bed. When she turns out to be--not a ghost at all--but a young girl named Sevrine, who has been hiding from the Nazis in Monique's own basement, how could Monique not be surprised! Playing upstairs after dark, the two become friends until, in a terrifying moment, they are discovered, sending both of their families into a nighttime flight.

In the tradition of Pink and Say, Patricia Polacco once again dips into her own family's history to reveal her Aunt Monique's true story of friendship from the French Resistance.

5 out of 5 stars The Butterfly.......2006-05-20

"Rechtes... verlassen des links..., Recht, link" said the German commander as he and his men walked down the streets of France. The book The Butterfly a great book about a French girl named Monique who finds out about a secret her mother was harboring for many months. One night she wakes up. She doesn't know why she did. She sees a ghostly girl who is petting her cat when Monique said something. The girl gets up and runs. Monique doesn't know what to do. So, she tells her mom her mother gets very angry but not at her daughter. I think this book is unbelievable. I like how the author does a good job showing how they reacted to all the problems.

5 out of 5 stars Gentle introduction to the Holocaust, no concentration camps or gas chambers.......2006-01-08

My wife selected this book, for our 5 year old daughter, in the primary school library, before the Christmas break. Last night, when I picked it up to read to my daughter, I had no idea what it was about. It is a gentle introduction to World War 2 and the German Nazi's. It does not mention concentration camps or gas chambers. It is about a wonderful family in France that sheltered Jews hiding from the Nazi's, during the German occupation. This morning, my daughter asked me to read the book to her again.

5 out of 5 stars The Butterfly.......2004-05-20

I found "The Butterfly" a very interesting book because it not only shows how Jews, but how non-Jews lived in fear in World War II. It tells how the little girl, Monique, is afraid of the "tall black boots" in her small French village. The "tall black boots" refer to the Nazi officers. It is not until Monique's friend, Monsieur Marc, is beaten and taken away by the officers when Monique finds out why the Nazis are in her village. One night Monique encounters a little "ghost girl" in her room that teaches Monique that she is not the only one afraid of the War. The little "ghost girl" turns out to be a Jewish girl named Severine hiding with her parents in Monique's unknown basement. It turns out that Monique's mother was hiding this secret from her. One night when Monique and Severine are playing in Monique's room when a neighbor sees them. The girls tell Monique's mother that someone had saw Severine and that Monique and her mother will be in trouble if they continue to harbor Severine and her family. That night, Monique and her mother take Severine and her parents to safety and Monique ends up in trouble. Will she ever be safe?

The book The Butterfly By patricia polacco is a story about a little girl during the 1940's, but her mom was hiding people in the basement. When all the people have to leave, even her best friend. But they will always have a gift from eachother to remember them.
I would recommend this book to whoever picks up this book.It has a little bit of everything a memior,a little bit of went on in history,it also has a lot of friendship.
In this book you will have a lot of vizualization, question, and a lot of craft. These will help you understand.

5 out of 5 stars Butterfly House.......2002-10-19

This book is about a girl who saves a caterpillar
from a hungry blue jay. The girl keeps the caterpilar until it is a butterfly. My favorite part is when they make the caterpillar's little house. I LOVE the illustrations.I'd recommend this book to people who like butterflies.

5 out of 5 stars A very warm celebration........1999-10-04

I saw a copy of BUTTERFLY HOUSE and bought it right away because I was attracted to the love and warmth that the book radiates through its story and illustrations on one of my favorite subjects, the butterfly. Butterfly lovers can look for MALINDA MARTHA MEETS MARIPOSA too, different in that it features the Monarch rather than the Painted Lady and different again in that it offers the dimension of acting out the life-cycle as a play. Similar is the love for the butterfly that the children will experience in each book. One doesn't seem complete without the other. Together a child will build a life-time of love and knowledge on this subject.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful story of a girl her grandfather and butterflies........1999-05-02

This was a delightful book written by Eve Bunting highlighting her wonderful style of writing. This book caught my eye at first by the beautiful cover but then I was spell bound by the wonderful illustrations and the delightful story. I was also attracted to this book because of the butterflies. I am a teacher and my first grade class just raised painted lady butterflies, just like in the book. It was a wonderful book to share with my students, especially on the day we released our own butterflies. The book helped explain that it was okay to cry but to be happy at their new found freedom. I would recommend this book to anyone at any age.

Butterflies are among the planet's most majestic creatures, their delicate forms sprinkled with brilliant color and rich with texture. More than 200,000 kinds of butterfly and caterpillar have been spotted around the world-that's one in every ten insects. Photographer Gilles Martin brings this extraordinary slice of nature to the page in this gorgeous volume. Martin captures butterflies in spectacular images, while photographs of caterpillars and their metamorphoses invite readers to explore the vast diversity of the species. The pictures are complemented by text from animal behaviorist and nature expert Myriam Baran, who tells would-be lepidopterists everything they need to know about these animals. From the recognizable Monarch to lesser-known types, Butterflies of the World gives readers an all-around look at this magnificent insect.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding photographs.......2007-05-08

This is beautiful, oversized, table top book that will have you gazing at it for months. The text is very informative and written is such a manner as to keep the reader engaged. The exotic world of the butterfly is explored all over the globe. Many of the butteflies will be of insects you have never seen before, with some of the most interesting and complex patterns and colors. There is a very good section on the Monarch butterfly(Danaus plexippus)and the interesting story regarding it's migration. The fascinating stories are complimented by extremely well taken phtographs. The photographs are the highlight of this book as they are taken with different lenses and many with the natural light creating unusual results. The close ups are nothing short of spectacular. Seeing butterflies in the garden is one thing, seeing them magnified through the lense is another. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in butterflies and who wants to learn more about their interesting habits. I know I learned some things that I didn't know before as I am sure you will. Recommended for school and community libraries. This book would be very useful for a young student who is writting a report or looking for an interesting book about nature.

4 out of 5 stars A REAL REVIEW.......2007-03-08

I'm no book hound, or a butterfly fan for that matter, but this is one neat book. A month ago I had a mission to find something like this but couldn't find anything cool written about this book or any others about butterflies so...
First of all the pictures are amazing. The clarity, layout, and total number are astounding. Most of the photos are large enough to do the subjects justice. Looking at other books "in it's class" I found the pictures to be small and simply not as good.
The text is easy to follow and stays away from getting too technical. That's what I wanted out of a book. Enough to feel like I knew something without taking away from what I really wanted, the photos.

The photos are so good they're worth mentioning again.

5 out of 5 stars A visually stimulating presentation of images that border on fine art.......2006-07-05

With an informative text by Myriam Baran which is dramatically enhanced with fully color photography by Gilles Martin, Butterflies Of The World showcases of the wondrous world of butterflies and their remarkable individual characteristics and intricacies. An visually impressive compendium of butterflies (including their caterpillar state), Butterflies Of The World offers readers a visually stimulating presentation of images that border on fine art, and an informative contribution to the our knowledge of this fascinating creature that is to be found in nature around the globe. A beautiful edition that would be worthy of being an academic or community library's Memorial Fund acquisition choice, Butterflies Of The World is to be given high praise and recommended for nature lovers who appreciate the delicate and enduring beauty of the butterfly.

Tennyson weaves an enchanting tale of the delicate balance of life in the rainforest. Through the senses of a blue morpho butterfly, he charms readers into discovering the layers of the rainforest, its inhabitants and their importance in the cycle of life. He presents the question of human inhabitants and their role in the cycle, and sensitively handles the issue of deforestation. The story ends on a note of hope, as Morpha learns of conservationists, who are trying to preserve the rainforest with research and sustainable farms. In addition to the lovely illustrations, a glossary of terms and teacher help page are provided to aid in integrating this story with many elementary content areas.
A must-have for any teacher's bookshelf!

Book Description

One summer morning, a flock of butterflies alights on John Farrington's house and changes his life forever. Surrounding John in his yard, the monarchs ask for his help. They have lost their way. The green places are gone--the meadows have become mini-malls; the forests are now parking lots. Can John lead them to another refuge?
Passionate, moving, and inspiring, this glorious flight of fantasy from master storyteller Bruce Coville is a timely fable about the difficulties--and the rewards--of staying true to one’s heart.

5 out of 5 stars Meaningful picture book!.......2005-04-22

This is one of the most meaningful picture books I have read in a long time. The message is so important for children if our environment is to survive many more generations. My students have sat spellbound as I read this book out loud to them. The discussions afterward are incredible. This book is a must for all school, classroom, and home libraries.

5 out of 5 stars This one will stay with you for a long, long time..........2002-07-17

One of the most evocative children's books I've seen in years. The art is simply spellbinding---and the ending will touch all but the hardest of hearts. An unusual picture book in that it creates some real narrative and emotional tension along the way before winding up to a wonderful finish. My kids were leaning forward in anticipation.
A must for any Monarch lover.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic book for everyone.......2002-05-01

A wonderful book! The highly original story works seamlessly with the astoundingly beautiful paintings to create a very powerful reading experience. It is a magical tale combined with an effective message about the real plight of the Monarchs.
Everyone I show this book to loves it; all are inevitably moved both by the story and the gorgeous illustrations.
The Prince of Butterflies is a very uplifting book that all ages can appreciate, and I think it's destined to be a classic.

Story and illustrations fit together perfectly. After just one reading your child will remember both for the rest of their life but will want to return to the book over and over...

5 out of 5 stars Systems Thinking Through Stories - A Winning Combination!.......2001-05-10

Systems thinking provides structure to understanding our complex world. Stories, whether our own or selections from literature, offer a powerful hook to recognition of the interconnectedness within a system.

As an educator, I've been intrigued with the idea of systems thinking, but somewhat intimidated by its complexity. After reading and rereading WHEN A BUTTERFLY SNEEZES, I have a far deeper understanding of its power.

I''ve long believed in the power of story to enhance understanding. This little book affirms that belief.

Thank you, Linda Booth Sweeney, for this fine work.

5 out of 5 stars Systems thinking is good for kids and adults........2001-04-26

I have used some of the same stories described in Linda's book in training courses with environmental professionals from many countries as well as in introducing systems thinking into my own organization. There is a universal appeal to stories by Dr. Seuss, for example, and much wisdom hidden just behind the wild drawings and imaginative language. Linda's unique contribution lies in showing teachers and parents how they can use a wide range of enchanting stories to tap into this deeper meaning in order to improve problem solving abilities in everyday life. The book's recommendations on using stories can easily be applied to improving our parenting and teaching skills by listening more carefully to the stories children tell, asking better questions, and sharing responsibility with our children for interpreting the answers.

5 out of 5 stars Stories as a structure for sustained learning.......2001-03-17

The mark of a great story is that it plants a deep seed in ones psyche that penetrates and grows slowly but oh so steadily. Like a koan, it imbeds itself and connects the limbic system with the neo-cortex, the emotions with the intellect. As one encounters the world, the story keeps resurfacing just when appropriate, deepening ones learning. Linda Booth Sweeney has found magical ways to plant seeds in kids (young and old), about critical messages of connectedness and life, and elegantly woven ways of learning that are ancient and current. Readers are in some ways left with a living question in their hearts and minds: What is life asking of me now?

5 out of 5 stars Stories: A Gateway to Systems Thinking.......2001-02-17

"When a Butterfly Sneezes" uses stories to help introduce the basics of systems thinking. This book was written for parents and educators as a guide for helping children gain a richer and deeper understanding of the world around them through their favorite stories. This is a much needed book for parents who enjoy reading to their children and for educators, particularly those who work with students in the K-4 classroom where there is a focus on literacy. "When a Butterfly Sneezes" is a first of a kind book on this subject and at this level. It offers parents, teachers and teacher educator's a practical means for introducing systems to young minds. I will use this book in teacher education courses and recommend it highly to others.
