Excellent book, lots of good information for the collector or history buff. Many great pictures and a lot of good details for all the weapons listed in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Backbone to WWI Weapons Collector.......2006-06-27

Like his previous book on WWII weapons Mr. Canfield has dug deep into the archives to produce another educational volume. The photos are excellent and cover the weapons with great detail and the archival photos supporting the uses and accessories are always astounding. The section on the French Chauchat Light Machinegun, considered in some circles to be the worst weapon used by the AEF forces, actually points out that a number of the problems were created by the US during the conversion of the weapon from French 7MM to US 30-06 caliber. It also covers numerous accessories and supporting equipment. This is a wonderful resource, a great addition to a military library and is highly recommended for all interested in the hobby.

5 out of 5 stars A must have!.......2004-07-02

This is a MUST HAVE for anyone who is interested in the weapons used by the American Doughboy during the Great War. A complete and comprehensive guide that covers everything from bladed weapons to trench mortars. I can't recommend it enough.

5 out of 5 stars Hunnicutt Does it Again.......2000-03-13

Another excellent book by Hunnicutt. Don't let the price worry you, it's worth the $$. This work is more than just the story of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle, it covers the history of the APC in US service from WWII to the present.

Excellent photos, line drawings, cut aways of all major PC's, as well as the varients. Prototypes as well as production models are covered. Mr. Hunnicutt is the premier expert on US Armored Fighting vehicles. Buy this and you'll see why.

I have read this many times already, learning something new each time.

5 out of 5 stars A must for Military Vehicle buffs and Historians!.......1999-09-27

Clear and insightful compilation of well known and some lesser spotlighted military support vehicles and personnel carriers. Simply a "must have" reference for serious modelers, and an excellent coffee table resident for military vehicle fans.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent review of the development of US APCs........1999-09-23

Once again, Mr. Hunnicutt gallops to the rescue with another superb book on the development of US armored fighting vehicles. Geez - as an Army Brat and former US armor officer, I remember most of these beasts too well - my Dad's M59 with its mechanical nightmare of two engines; my beloved G-66 M113A1 command personnel carrier; and that miserable M114A1E1 recon vehicle. It couldn't fight its way out of a wet paper sack, but it sure looked tough with that BIG Hispano Suiza 20mm gun. My only criticism (and it's very minor) - the author didn't provide enough operational photos of the M59 and M114. They were around a LONG time, and were much more important to the armored force than a casual reading of this book would indicate. What next from Mr. Hunnicutt? We are just about out of tracked vehicles.

Mr. Canfield has written and contributed to a number of books and volumes throughout his career and this is one of the best. It has become one of the pivital references of those new and old alike in the historical military equipment hobby. The photos are numerous and highly detailed and the text is descriptive and concise, providing interesting history of the weapon along with facts and numbers where available. This is an excellent addition to any military library and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Agreat resource for the collector........2000-06-01

I have found U.S. Infantry Weapons of World War II to be an invaluable guide to my collecting of weapons. I found out about various weapons that I might never have known exsisted. With production dates by serial number Any U.S. military weapon can be traced to its' date of manufactor. It is full of notes for the collector, as what to look for in a particular piece. This book is an interesting read. A must have for the collector or the enthusiast.

4 out of 5 stars Good information for collectors or arm chair historians........1998-02-19

This book contained a lot of good information concerning ALL of the infantry weapons used by US forces in WWII. The book also contains useful information about modern day collecting of many of these weapons. Where the book lacks is in comparing the US weapons to those of our allies and enemies. I would have loved to see stats comparing the US .30 Cal machine gun and the German MG42, but the book is US only. All in all, a good read and a must for anyone who hopes to buy or shoot one of these weapons one day.

Book Description

This fantastic all-color reference provides engaging insights into the main infantry weapons of the five largest protagonists of World War II - Germany, Japan, Russia, the United States, and Great Britain, with particular attention paid to the actual roles these weapons played in battlefield combat encounters. Comparing axis to allies - who had the upper hand, the fair (or unfair) advantage - author jan Suermondt examines the physical details (and provides current collector values) of over 150 small arms, including revolvers, pistols, rifles, submachine guns, machine guns, mortars, grenades, and mines.

You'll be introduced to the types of weapons used during the war; how five years of war saw the needs and types of weaons change; as well as the technological advances during the period (paying particular atention to antitank weapons). More than 500 photographs, including actual war images, present a masterful visual iconography of some of the most important weapons carried into combat - the U.S. Army's BAR, the British Ben, the German Schmeisser, and the Russian Degtaryev DP/DPM.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not his best work.......2006-04-21

Hard for me to dislike any book that reflects the tools and images fo the Great Wars.
However I have to say that this book simply trys to woo the reader with its color pictures.
Certainly not its detail or length of information.
John Walter has abook Military Rifles of Two world Wars which is far superior to this one in details even if limited to rifles only.
Granted, Sudermondt does include machineguns motarsand antitank weapons,I guess I just got sore a tthe way he categorized some weapons like Mausers.

2 out of 5 stars Infantry Weapons of WWII.......2006-02-23

Good pictures, but very disorganized. Seems like they hurried to get it published. Several guns were in the wrong category, wording was sketchy at best. Doesn't look like anybody proofed it before it went to publication.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.......2004-10-08

Ok, i purchased this book because from what it looked liked, it was gonna be good. Wow, was i wrong! First off, I decided to just thumb through it and check out some of the photos. Well, there are mislabled photos through out the book. They have a PPsH ejector port on the Thompson page. They have a Colt on the webley page. Kinda irk'ed me but i decided to start reading it. Several mistakes on the weapons. And the so called "current collectors values" is a JOKE. If the guns were actually worth as much as the author has them listed, I'd have a majority of them. But i don't cause almost ALL OF THEM ARE UNDER PRICED. He also has a 1918 Browning Automatic Rifle listed under rifles, but in all actuallity, it's a machine gun. I collect World War 2 weapons and this book is the biggest dissappointment of all the books that I have on the subject. I highly DO NOT RECOMMEND. Find something else rather than waste your money on this.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wongkong too harsh.......2004-07-26

wongkong is too harsh with this book. The only major translational error is translating "signals units" as "intelligence units". There is only one incidence of a few paragraphs being repeated in another place, and the book is not as dire as wongkong would suggest.

Will agree that it is not for the faint of heart. Would be nice to see this volume redone with photos accompanying the text, but as it stands the photo section is extensive, even if submitted as an appendix.

Would also benefit from more explanations of wartime changes and variants on the established unit strengths presented.

Not for the amateur historian.

3 out of 5 stars Abominable Translation & Proofreading Detracts from Content.......2002-08-07

As with many other Schiffer titles, this book is riddled with errors in translation, major proofreading mistakes, and all around editorial sloppiness. The translator has weak grasp of the English language for technical subjects & English/German military terminology. There are also some pages where paragraph after paragraph is repeated. Much of the text in terms of sentence structure, grammar, and word usage is awkward. Data is metric and for readers not accustomed to European measurements and data conventions it is very clumsy. The pictures are not tied in with the text and at times the author chooses to dwell on some odd aspects of German unit organization. There is some good information in this book but it takes a determined and knowledgable reader to find it and not to be discouraged by all the book's flaws.

4 out of 5 stars Lavishly illustrated and richly detailed.......2002-03-04

Excellent primer on standard German infantry divisions (who bore the brunt of the fighting in WW II). No info on specialist units like tank, paratrooper or mountain troops, but what this book does do is give a detailed man for man description of the German infantry division in WW II, including ranks, weapons and equipment.

Translation is a little confusing in places - the Signals units are mistranslated as being "Intelligence" units, but most information will be accurate and easily understood even by those new to German Army subjects. Fascinating photos, though not directly related to the text.

Author was a German infantryman in WW II. Some interesting statistics are also provided regarding a variety of topics.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent in-depth review of German Infantry and equipment.......1998-08-26

Although this book is a little lacking on photographs, it still provides a detailed written analysis of German infantry force structure and equipment. It also gives a short history of each of the German units throughout the war. I would recommend this book to historians and report writers. Model builders who require photographic reference will enjoy the photo section at the end of the book.

    Book Description

The Matilda was the principal British infantry tank in the early years of World War II. It served with the BEF in France and later in North Africa, where it earned the title ‘Queen of the Desert’. Outclassed by increasingly powerful German anti-tank weapons, it still remained a power in the South-East Pacific, and was kept in service until the end of the war by Australian forces. In this title, David Fletcher deals with Marks I to V. Development and operational history are discussed, along with service in other countries, including Germany and Russia. Numerous variants are also covered, including the prototype ‘Hedgehog’ bunker-busting weapon.

      Book Description

This title looks at Napoleon's Middle and Young Guard infantry. The seniority of Guard infantry was only established definitely in 1812 by the Guard's chief of personnel, Courtois. The title 'Young Guard' was assigned to the newly-raised regiments in 1809, but the term 'Middle Guard' came into use about 1811. From the beginning the newer guard regiments were committed to action first, the Old Guard, as Napoleon wrote, 'being so precious, one fears to expose them'; thus the Fusiliers-Chasseurs distinguished themselves at Hilsberg whilst the rest of the Guard was kept in reserve. In 1808 the Fusiliers went to Spain, serving at the Madrid rising, Medina and Guadalajara. Philip Haythornwaite examines these troops in a detailed text backed by numerous illustrations including eight full page colour plates by Bryan Fosten.

      Book Description

The battlefield interaction between infantry and tanks was central to combat on most fronts in World War II. The first ‘Blitzkrieg’ campaigns saw the tank achieve a new dominance. New infantry tactics and weapons – some of them desperately dangerous – had to be adopted, while the armies raced to develop more powerful anti-tank guns and new light weapons. By 1945, a new generation of revolutionary shoulder-fired AT weapons was in widespread use. This book explains in detail the shifting patterns of anti-tank combat, illustrated with photographs, diagrams and colour plates showing how weapons were actually employed on the battlefield.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Superb guide to ww2 anti-tank infantry doctrine.......2006-05-10

With world war one the tank was introduced and began the revolution in ground warfare. In world war two the revolution was essentially achieved with only slightly more achieved with the actions in the Middle east by the Israilies.

This little booklet shows how the infantry in Germany, Britain, the US, Japan and the Soviet Union (which pretty much represents all infantry of the war) developed doctrine and weaponry with which to cope with the new menace much as the infantry of the middle ages developed tactics with the Pike, the Halberd and other weapons to cope and then pull down the armored knight.

Their success level varies with the Japanese at the worst end.

My only regret is that this book doesn't cover the Finnish Infantry who successfully defended their country from Soviet Tank assaults during the winter war.

      Otherwise an excellant book.

4 out of 5 stars Decent Overview of WW2 AT Tactics and Weapons.......2005-03-18

In Osprey's Elite #124, World War II Infantry Anti-Tank Tactics, military specialist Gordon L. Rottman details the gamut of anti-tank weapons and tactics in the Second World War. This volume is an excellent introduction to anti-tank theory and practice, with a good overview of the basic battalion-level weapons available. In this volume, Rottman focuses only on those AT weapons normally available at the regiment or lower level during 1939-45, and only in the US, British, German, Russian and Japanese armies.

Rottman begins the volume with background information on the tank threat in that period and tank vulnerabilities, followed by a section that outlines the basic AT weapon types available (ranging from hand grenades and mines to light/medium AT guns). The author then discusses the evolution of AT tactics during the Second World War, followed by about 30 pages that detail specific AT weapons and tactics of the US, the UK, Germany, the USSR and Japan. The color plates in the volume are: tank vulnerabilities (a US infantryman attacking a Pz IV with a satchel charge); a generic company AT defense; a German tank-hunting team in 1939-40; a US Army AT ambush in 1944-45; a British AT roadblock in 1943-44; Soviet AT defenses in built-up areas, 1944; a German panzer kampfgruppe in covering positions, 1944-45; and a Japanese `self-sacrifice' attack, 1945.

Rottman's summary of the AT tactics of the Second World War is good, although he makes little effort to evaluate which tactics were more effective than others. Typically, Rottman prefers to present a mass of data and then leave it to the reader to draw his own conclusions. Although the size constraints of this format prevent comprehensive treatment, I wish that Rottman had made at least brief mention of the failed AT efforts of the French, Polish and Italian armies.

As a former tanker, I found that Rottman probably undervalued the role of obstacles and expedient weapons. While Rottman mentions that thick concentrations of barbed wire could inhibit tank movement, my own experience indicates that several coils of concertina can be very effective in blocking tanks (however, white phosphorus rounds will melt concertina wire); any tanker foolish enough to attempt plowing through a thick wire obstacle will quickly find it wrapped around his final drive and the transmission burnt-out. Rottman didn't mention hasty obstacles much, but some - such as the log crib - can be very effective in stopping or canalizing armor, particularly in wooded areas. Destroyed vehicles or very large stones can also prove excellent hasty AT obstacles; I once saw a tank that had hit a large rock at night and shorn off an entire road wheel arm (for that matter, Rottman doesn't really differentiate between night and day AT tactics, but it does make a huge difference for the infantry). Rottman also tends to dismiss expedient AT tactics as ineffective, but the Germans destroyed a lot of T-34s without proper AT weapons. I once saw a tank immobilized by a T-shirt shoved into its engine air intake (which drained the battery in less than 5 minutes), and in dense terrain cunning infantry can get tanks to throw track with something as simple as a 12" thick log. On the flip side of the coin, having served in infantry units against tanks, it is often critical in AT tactics that the infantry have either a height advantage (which allows you to disengage without being seen) or an obstacle between you and the tanks.

Although Rottman spends considerable effort to discuss tank vulnerabilities, it is primarily in terms of the tank itself. However, the relative effectiveness of various AT tactics really comes down to the skill and experience of the tank's crew. "Good tankers" do not get separated from their `wing' tanks or their infantry, they use covered terrain as much as possible for protection, and they have well-versed actions on contact. "Bad tankers" are far easier to pick off because they get separated from their supporting units (or they bunch up), they drive "hey-diddle-diddle, straight-down-the-middle" right into AT ambushes and their first action on contact is to stop in the kill zone. Hunting individual tanks is far different from stopping a tank platoon or company, but Rottman's narrative really only focuses on limited tank threats. The most successful AT tactics are those that recognizes the weakness or vulnerabilities of their opponents, and then ruthlessly take advantage of them.
