Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource.......2005-10-08

This book (textbook) is an excellent resource for just about everything in TV. The disk included is a great utility to have for printing out your own contracts. I only with this book could be updated, say, every two years.

5 out of 5 stars Stolen 3 times... This book is hot!!!.......2002-04-04

This book is so hot that it's been stolen from my office library 3 times. I'm on my 4th purchase of this book. I felt like I could have an intellegent conversation about any aspect of the television business after using this book. It is my main resource for getting quick answers that are easy to understand. This is required reading for those getting started and a great resource for those that have been in the industry a while. It also includes a computer disk containing forms such as U.S. Copyright registration and others found in the book that you can import to your word processor.

5 out of 5 stars Imagine the Future, Study the Past.......2000-11-08

This Business of Television is a landmark volume in our practice (micro-economic forecasting for the entertainment industry). Here are the top three reasons why.

Reason # 3: it is incredible that guys of this stature would take the time to compile such an essential and complete perspective of the television business. Goodenough, a seasoned entertainment lawyer, law professor, and a scholar pioneering the study of law and evolutionary biology, brings the structure and rigor, while Blumenthal, a prolific TV, multimedia, and online entertainment producer and businessman brings the been-there-done-that street savvy.

Reason # 2: it is, after all, the business that pays for the content (the subscriber, pay-per-view, advertising, syndication, and the latest, e-commerce revenue models) and the content that drives the migration to new technology (streaming media webcasting and video-on-demand, interactive TV, and wireless). The clear understanding of the financial systems supporting television and video entertainment offered by Oliver and Howard in this book facilitates the modeling of future monetary transactions.

Reason # 1: video programming spread from broadcast to cable and then to satellite in one generation. The last decade found it spreading to the PC via CD-ROM, DVD, and broadband Internet. In the future it will be found on our cell phones, wristwatches, car seat backs, and refrigerators. There will be innovations in business arrangements along the way, but those who cannot converse in the language of economics will be doomed.

The second edition proudly bears a jacket quote by Morty Morton, former producer of the Late Show with David Letterman, who remarked, "This Business of Television has gotten me through years of moderate success in the TV business. I'm now ready to burn the damn thing and open a restaurant."

The inside story of how Bieler started with no money, no product, and no experience, and somehow created a $100 million business selling the "Thighmaster" through infomercials. Far more entertaining and fun than any infomercial, and, in many ways, a mind-boggling book about how new industries are created in this modern world. Recommended.

Book Description

"Only in America could a would-be monk convince a faded television star to pitch a rehabilitation device designed for Scandinavian skiers and create a nationwide sensation. The marketing strategy alone is worth the price of admission."

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Insider's view of infomercials.......2007-03-23

I found this a fascinating look inside the world of marketing and infomercials, as well as a view of the author's experience turning a utilitarian product into something sexy and wanted by millions.

5 out of 5 stars superb case study of bringing a product to market.......2005-02-02

This is an excellent (and well-written!) case study of bringing a popular product to market with infomercial marketing. I liked it so much I read it cover to cover, which is rare for me. I am recommending it to all my students at copywriting university.

Emphasis on marketing, typical business production/legal issues, plus very motivating on persistence while being an entrepreneur.
I liked the testing details, copywriting and media buy numbers.. very eye-opening to me, and extremely insightful.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious Look at Creating a Business.......2004-10-21

The book goes from staking out the county fairs for ideas to corporate takeover attempts. The section of selecting a product shows that no one is completely right 100% of the time.

5 out of 5 stars A "must have" for any budding entrepreneur!.......1999-06-17

Peter Biehler has written not only a sensational book about infomercials, he has unwittingly written an entertaining and profound book on motivation and persevering to attain one's goals. He provides an indepth understanding of the key components of how to put together an infomerical and succeed. It was more like reading an engrossing novel than the uusal dreary business books.

5 out of 5 stars The best work on the crazy world of infomercials I've read.......1998-03-26

Not just a look at the world of infomercial marketing, but an honest peek at the characters that populate this industry. The treatment is creative -- a tongue-in-cheek look at a world that is completely different than the one I market in from day to day.

5 out of 5 stars All You Need to Know for Surviving as a Screenwriter.......2000-07-18

Wonderful book on the business of screenwriting, contains everything you need to know and then some. Tips on what pros look for in scripts they want to buy and sell, info on the business, points to make in the deal. Ron Suppa is a screenwriter, producer and teacher, and what he's learned can be transformed into valuable lessons for you. It's a great book for professional writers as well as beginners, to understand more of the process of selling not only your scripts but yourself in Hollywood.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on this subject in print.......1999-10-23

Do yourself a favor, READ THIS BOOK and forget all the junk telling you platitudes and wishful thinking and not hard, business reality, which is what we all need. I work in the business and I read scripts for almost 2 years and I've written 3 specs and I know stardust when it's being blown in my face. Not this book. This is the truth, like it or not, but it really tries to help you find a way into this closed club. Practical tips fill every page, conveyed in the clear, assured, tight prose of a working screenwriter-- with an easy, conversational style that probably came from all the teaching experience. About a third of the book covers the art of actually being a writer and surviving in Hollywood and crafting the kind of script that will attract industry attention, and the rest tells you how to protect your work (goes way beyond the register or copyright advice most books offer) in submission, all about agents and writing partners and the WGA and gives you a whole war chest of inside info that can really turn someone from a novice to a working writer. At least you'll know what the business is really all about. God, I'm sorry, but just flipping through the pages now, I have to tell you: I LOVE THIS BOOK!

      Book Description

In this bestselling autobiography, Norman Jewison reflects on his life as a Hollywood director. Jewisons passionate and entertaining films cover a wide range of subjects and styles, from the classic The Cincinnati Kid to the political satire of The Russians Are Coming to the sultry mystery of In The Heat of the Night (winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture of 1967), and from the powerful screen version of Broadways Fiddler on the Roof to the critically acclaimed A Soldiers Story. Moonstruck, Jewisons most beloved film, garnered three Academy Awards. A mentor to many in the business, Norman Jewison wrote this memoir as part of his legacy to future generations of filmmakers.

      Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Southerner Got My Money.......2005-12-26

I saw this book in the book store the other night and almost bought it. Norman Jewison was on the TCM documentary of Steve McQueen, seemed like a nice guy with some fascinating stories, and I thought it would be interesting to read about his career and all the celebrities he has worked with.

I thumbed through the book, reading bits and pieces. On the back cover was a praising review from Gore Vidal - Strike 1. Below that was a praising review from Cher - Strike 2. Inside was a picture of Jewison with Governor Bill Clinton of Arkansas - Strike 3. Not to mention the book states John Wayne supposedly called Jewison a "pinko Canadian." Also not to mention a few other things I found offensive. I put the book back on the shelf, kept looking and wound up buying "Capote," about the life of Truman Capote. He was a Southerner, a writer, hob-nobbed with the rich and famous, and on the back book cover it said he had a feud with Gore Vidal. Home run.

4 out of 5 stars Director of 'Moonstruck', 'In the Heat of the Night' and other memorable films has written his autobiography.......2005-09-12

I finished this in three days and found it to be a fine book. Between 1965 and 1968 Norman Jewison directed 'The Cincinnati Kid', 'The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming','In the Heat of the Night' and the original 'The Thomas Crown Affair'. The book is at its best covering those years and those films. Chapters on 'Fiddler on the Roof' and 'Moonstruck' were not quite as successful. The most recent films-'Other People's Money','Only You' and 'Hurricane'-were treated rather briskly.
