Book Description
The Andy Griffith Show continues to have a huge worldwide following. While many factors contribute to the show's ongoing popularity, many fans continue to point to the basic moral principles upheld by each and every episode. The Way Back to Mayberry takes an irresistible look at these moral themes and values promoted by the show and examines them in light of biblical truth. Each episode is described, and then the message of each show is looked at in detail, along with a biblical example of the theme, and an application for our lives today. This heart-warming book wanders back to a place where life seemed simpler and attention was paid to the little things.

True Spirit of Mayberry.......2004-02-21
Heartwarming book on the wonderful lessons from Mayberry. Author presents many personal stories and reflections from the classic TV show - a very satisfying read. No Andy Griffith collection is complete without this volume!
New Look at an Old Show.......2003-04-19
Being a huge Andy Griffith fan, I picked this book up the other day. Don't know what I was expecting, but I was pleasantly surprised. Any Andy fan can tell you that the show was full of good, heart-warming stories, but I had never thought of the show in the terms presented by the author. To clarify, this book is not filled with epsisode trivia, or preachy sermon topics. However, it does present unique thoughts and observations regarding the timeless themes of Mayberry from a personal perspective. In almost every chapter, the author relates a personal story that will make you laugh, cry, or just reflect on simpler pace of life - kind of like The Andy Griffith Show used to do! If you have even a casual appreciation of the "Old Griffith Show", you will enjoy this book.
Goober's the Best.......2002-02-02
If you're a fan of Goober and the Mayberrians you will like this book. It will have a special place in your bookshelves. When at University of Alabama I met George Lindsey, who went to school at UOA. To me, Goob made the show! Take it from Sharon a longtime Goober fan.
The Gospel According To Andy.......2001-06-15
This is a feel-good approach to a TV phenomenon that is still delighting audiences thirty years later. Fann has hit on one of the reasons for the show's success: each episode contains moral truths and spiritual guidelines intricately woven into the storyline, and these are just as applicable to today's sophisticated, special effects-bombarded viewers as they were to the technicolor-challenged children of the sixties. Fann devotes a separate chapter to thirty of his favorite episodes. He gives a brief synopsis of the events, and then he presents parallel biblical principles that he feels are being showcased. He often peppers his writing with anecdotes from his own experience, and many of these have a "Chicken Soup" kind of approach. Because each chapter is self-sufficient, the book can be read incrementally--a chapter at a time, or it can be enjoyed in its entirety for those who have larger blocks of leisure time available. Each chapter begins with a correlating verse from scripture. For those teaching Andy Griffith Bible studies, this book is a wonderful companion for use in lesson preparation.

Aunt Bee's Mayberry Cookbook.......2007-01-12
Being from a small town and now living away from it this book is like having my little aunties giving me their secert recipes... God rest their soul! I wish I had been old enough to ask them for them personally, but I found a lot of them in these two books. This is one of the two Mayberry cookbooks I own.
cute but disappointing.......2005-04-27
I think the black and white episodes of the Andy Griffith Show are probably the best examples of American TV ever made, so I was thrilled to order this book. There are no photos at all which makes it tedious to flip through. Also, every recipe insists on having a character's name in the title. It's cute for the first few pages but gets tiresome very quickly. I can't imagine Ernest T. Bass cooking anything and if he did I don't believe I would want to try it. However, there are many, many pieces of dialogue reproduced exactly as they were said on the show and it is delightful to read them! How funny simple American dialect can be... This book is a fun momento of the classic Americana sitcom, but don't expect to cook much from it.
Waited for Years for This..........2003-05-21
I've seen this cookbook sold in book collector's magazines, but always lost track of how to get it. I am so glad to add it to my collection of cookbooks. I plan to try most of the recipes, but will leave the possum recipes to the Darlings.
Great comfort favorites!.......2003-01-09
I received this cookbook as a shower gift ten years ago from my 90-something year old great, great aunt. At the time, I thought it looked a bit hokey...it just goes to show that we young cooks have so much to learn from those that have gone before us! It has all of my family's favorites -- it is usually the place that I can find the recipe for all of those good things I remember from my childhood. I have over 60 cookbooks, and it is one of my most-used! This one is a "must-have".
Tasty, tasty, tasty........1999-09-17
A wonderful cooking tool - I have an autographed copy
Book Description
Some shows just get better with age. As The Andy Griffith Show turns forty, the authors of the complete fan guide to the show have updated the book with new information gained from access to the complete shooting scripts of the original episodes.
The Andy Griffith Show remains one of America's most-watched programs, gaining new fans through its widespread syndication (including a major promotional campaign accompanying its joining TV Land's prime-time line-up in 2000), conventions, and upcoming "behind-the-scenes" television specials. America has embraced the characters of Mayberry---Aunt Bee, Barney Fife, Goober, Opie, and Andy himself---as family members. From Miracle Salves to Kerosene Cucumbers, The Andy Griffith Show has left a lasting impression on our culture, a sweet nostalgic taste for a time gone by.

Excellent Reference for the Mayberry Trivia Buff & Fan Fiction Writer.......2005-07-17
Ken Beck and Jim Clark no doubt eat, drink, and breath the Andy Griffith Show as they must have watched every episode several times with pen and paper in hand to create this book filled with almost every bit of trivia you'd want to know about the show, not to mention their many other books on TAGS. This book is not about the actors, writers, behind-the-scenes activities, or the philosophy of the show, it is a book on the characters, places, and happenings in Mayberry. The episodes of the television show is the only source for this book.
Some reviewers do not think a book recapping the events of the television show is valuable, but it is for trivia buffs and for fan fiction writers. Fans who like to write Mayberry-related stories can find all sorts of helpful tidbits in this book. There is even an episode guide in the back with brief synopses. It is very useful for those who have not seen all the episodes or cannot remember certain details about the characters, places, etc. I have referred to this book several times in writing just one fan fiction story. It is very well-organized and usually offers that little detail I'm looking for. I was very surprised how much information is offered in this book.
Every character is profiled (almost all with photos) from the main ones to those who were only on a short time or intermittently like Ellie Walker, the Darlings, Clara Edwards Johnson, Emmett Clark, Sam Jones, and that adorable Warren Ferguson (with a nice photo I have not seen before). For trivia buffs, there are chapters on "Cops and Robbers," "Codes and Cases," "Mayberry Media" (local newspapers, radio stations, tv stations, tv programs enjoyed by Mayberry residents), "Music of Mayberry," "Contradictions," and more. There is also a helpful map of Mayberry with all the important spots like Myer's Lake, the Duck Pond, the Darling's cabin, and Ernest T. Bass' cave, a town directory and yellow pages for both Mayberry and Mt. Pilot. It also has a quiz. There are scores of b&w photos throughout the book. My only complaint is that the episode guide is not divided up into seasons. Recommended for anyone interested in the characters of TAGS.
the ultimate andy griffith show book.......2005-01-01
this is book is wonderful! it is by far the best andy griffith book that is out there.
Miracle Salve and Kerosene Cucumbers.......2003-05-21
Wonderful, just what I anticipated. Thank you for distributing this excellent review of the show, and list of all episodes.
A peek inside Mayberry's secret life.......2003-04-04
This is the second book I have read about The Andy Griffith Show. (The first one was Barney Fife and Other Characters I Have Known, written by Don Knotts with Robert Metz)
This book has very descriptive information about all the favorite characters from the show, based on what is known about them from the episodes of the show. There is NO information about the actors that played these roles, JUST the characters. These facts are put together in an easy-to-read style that will make for pleasant browsing or looking up trivia facts. There are also many nice photos in the book, some in color (fortieth anniversary edition) and there are quizzes, lists, and an episode guide with very brief summaries of the shows.
It is a really nice book and can be enjoyed by fans of the show in any age group, from youth to grownup.
And even though there is no actual show production stories or actor interviews in this book, it does do a good job of profiling the characters and showing their individual personalities in the context of the world they exist in, that of their beloved Mayberry.
Hallelujah, I have died and gone to Mayberry!.......2002-02-07
Everything you ever wanted to know about Mayberry, but didn't know whom to ask. Until now. Painstakingly assembled by two self-proclaimed "Goobers" who have likely forgotten more TAGS tidbits than you or I will ever know, this exhaustive guide is very well-organized and easy on the eye. The first time I read it, during a memorably relaxing trip to the north Georgia mountains, I devoured it in one luxurious sitting, and I still refer to it often. It's that entertaining, addictive and authoritative.
It's important to note, the authors present facts about Mayberry and its denizens as if they were real (and don't try to tell me they aren't!), leaving the task of analyzing the program itself to other scholars. (Such as Richard Michael Kelly, whose own TAGS book is top-shelf.)
The rampant commercialization of all things Mayberry in recent years is more than a little disconcerting. The loving care that went into the making of this book, however, is not in question. For my money, it is the only indispensable reference for those with Mayberry in their blood.

Aunt Bee's Delightful Desserts.......2007-01-12
Being from a small town and now living away from it this book is like having my little aunties giving me their secert recipes... God rest their soul! Delightful is right!.......2002-03-17
This cookbook delightful to use and to peruse! It is a collection of 350 "small town" recipes from cast, friends and guest artists from the show. Trivia and snapshots are sprinkled throughout.
All the recipes I have tried in the cookbook have been very accurate. No missing ingredients. No temperatures wrong. The index is thorough: recipes by name and by major ingredient. The recipes are easy to follow and come out tasty too!
The names are unique: Remember Gomer telling Barney "Citizen's arrest!! Citizen's arrest!!" Well, "Citizen's Arrest Chocolate Cheesecake" would be worth a night in the slammer with Otis! It's that good!
Every recipe I have tried has become a favorite: "My Name Ain't Clem Applesauce Cake" "Wally's 7-Up(r) Pound cake" "Ellie's Apple Crisp"....
Delightful is right! For reading, cooking and eating!
NOT ONLY DELIGHTFUL BUT ESSENTIAL FOR EVERY KITCHEN!.......2000-06-22
I purchased this cookbook out of the fondness I held for the television show and thought it would make a novel conversation piece when guests linger in my kitchen. Aunt Bee's Delightful Deserts has become an essential desert cookbook not only for my dinners but family gatherings, cookouts, and parties. Lorranie's Fudge has become a Christmas tradition! The photos from the television show with kooky captions along with the recipes make cooking from this book as delightful as Mayberry itself. A must for any cook.

Great gift book and collector's item........2003-02-04
Any fan of The Andy Griffith Show will absolutely love this book. Content is inspirational and very well done. Cover photo is beautiful.
Don't waste your time.......2000-09-22
The premise of this book is great. However, it was poorly done. Many of the references make incorrect references to the show and are simply wrong (e.g., quotes attributed to the wrong people, references to story lines that really didn't happen that way, etc.). I started keeping track of these errors and got so disgusted I simply quit reading.
It Ain't Worth the Pain.......1999-10-19
The concept for this book is excellent. The Andy Griffith Show is full of life lessons to be drawn and shared. The content of the book, however, was miles short of Mayberry. Many of the "lessons" lacked a clear connection to an episode, leaving me to figure it out for myself. To quote Briscoe Darling, this book "ain't worth the pain."
Review of Life Lessons from Mayberry........1999-07-24
The book "Life Lessons from Mayberry" is an excellent choice for any fan of the Andy Griffith Show. This book gives direct quotes from the show and also sums up the episode that the quote originated from. It also contains pages of a dialogue between two characters that, just like the quotes, give a lesson to learn from. I suggest this book to any reader who : 1) enjoys Andy Griffith shows & 2) needs any direction or support in their life. Good Reading to ya!
Customer Reviews:
Good Behind-the-scenes book.......2006-02-11
This is the book I have been searching for to answer those unanswered questions. I wondered what happened to the first Floyd (an older gentleman), why Ellie abruptly left after the first season, why Don Knotts left after season Five, etc... This book explains what happened behind-the-scenes.
The book is broken down into sections: The Production, Developing a Cast, Changes in the Cast, Going Out A Winner, and more. It offers up the thoughts of the producers, directors, and cast members including quotes from Andy Griffith and Don Knotts on their take of a situation. It's an informative, easy read that focuses on the development and inner workings. It brings about a certain personal closeness between the reader and cast.
If you're looking for a book strictly centered on the on-screen characters, check out The Andy Griffith Show by Ken Beck and Jim Clark. You'll find out the Floyd(the on-screen character) is married, has a dog named Sam, a son and so on. Everything you wanted to know about the on-screen folks is in that book. However, if you want to know about the real folks and what went on behind-the-scenes, The Andy Griffith Show by Richard Kelly is the book for you.
More educational than the Geographic!.......2002-02-05
First published in 1981, Kelly's book was the first of what has become a groaning bookcase of titles devoted to one of television's most beloved sitcoms. To me, it is still one of the most satisfying. Far from being a gushy trivia tome, Kelly's book takes a scholarly look at the factors - casting, production values, writing style, etc. - that have contributed to TAGS enduring popularity. Fans who don't want to think that hard might find the book, shall we say, dry as dust. Others will find it hard to put down.
The insights of principals on both sides of the camera, from Sheldon Leonard and Aaron Ruben on the production end to Andy Griffith, Don Knotts and Jack Dodson on the performance side, are fascinating. The book even includes a working script (season four's "The Sermon for Today") from Griffith's personal collection, which Kelly presents as good illustration of Mayberry's (usually) unhurried pace and the show's character dynamics. He's right, but a more appropriate script to share would have been "Man in a Hurry" (often cited as the series best episode) from season three.
The book closes with summaries of all 249 TAGS episodes, including official script titles, filming sequence and airing order.
All in all, this is a valuable resource for serious TAGS devotees and anyone interested in the nuts and bolts of television production. Those wanting just another feel-good book about the folks of Mayberry had best look elsewhere.
Great Book!.......2000-09-24
This was the first book I ever bought on The Andy Griffith Show. My copy is now dog-eared, with some of the pages almost ready to fall out. I love it!! The comparisons between TAGS and other classic TV shows are a very interesting read, and the two scripts, "Sermon for Today" and the unfilmed "Wandering Minstrel," are the highlight of the book! I could clearly picture the scenes and dialogue in the scripts. If "Wandering Minstrel" had been filmed, it would've been a big hit! Anyway, go buy this book!
The most thoughtful book about the show.......2000-03-15
This is the first and still definitive study of the show. It contains extensive interviews with the major stars, directors, and producers from the show. It also contains two full scripts: one never seen or performed before and the other "The Sermon for Today" (NOT "Man in a Hurry" as another "reviewer" appears to think!) Also provides concise summaries of all 249 episodes. A terrific buy and a must read!
disappointing tribute to my favorite show.......2000-02-23
I love The Andy Griffith Show, and only want to read books on my favorite show written by authors who love it with the same enthusiasm as I feel. This book read like a term paper -- the writing dry and tedious. The only chapter of real interest? -- one containing the complete script of "Man in a Hurry" just as the actors saw it, and then another script that was never filmed for some unknown reason.
There must be other better tributes to this show. Bypass this one and keep looking.
Book Description
For the past five years, Neal Brower has written a column called "Professor Brower's Class" in the Bullet, the official newsletter of The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club. Each column centers on one episode from the popular television series, The Andy Griffith Show. Brower researches each episode with help from the show's writers, actors, and producers. His essays include their insights as well as Brower's own observations about production, photography, musical scoring, etc.
In this first volume of a projected three-volume series, Brower covers the 79 episodes that were written by writers Harvey Bullock, Everett Greenbaum, and Bill Idelson and their partners. Some of the episodes covered in Mayberry 101 include: "The Pickle Story," "Man in a Hurry," "My Fair Ernest T. Bass," "Opie the Birdman," "Mr. McBevee," "Prisoner of Love," "Rafe Hollister Sings," "Class Reunion," "Opie's Hobo Friend," "A Date for Gomer," and "The Darlings are Coming."
Customer Reviews:
A must have for Andy Griffith Show fans.......2007-01-21
Neal Brower's book, "Mayberry 101" is one of those books that you pull out before or after you watch a classic episode of the Andy Griffith show. In Brower's book, the episodes are broken down by season and a little more information about each show is given along with comments from the writers, producers, directors and even the actors. I do wish there were more comments from the actors, but the book is still a gold mine of information for Andy Griffith show fans (like yours truly).
I wonder what happened to the other two volumes of this book? This is Volume One, but according to what I have read/understood two more volumes were to be published.
Get this book if you enjoy the Andy Griffith Show!

Excellent resource and lots of fun, too.......2000-12-05
This book is a delight for Andy Griffith fans and scholars alike. I have used this book for graduate work, the Mayberry Bible study, and for a reference tool when I am watching a marathon. Brower brings new insights to these old friends and makes the show even more enjoyable
The only thing missing was an in depth look at the cast........2000-10-17
Let me first start off by saying Neal Brower did a fantastic job on Mayberry 101, that said, all that was missing was an in depth look at all the cast members. I would have like to seen profiles of actors like Frances Bavier, what made her the opposite of Aunt Bee in real life ?
A Real Find!.......2000-09-24
Of the two books I own on The Andy Griffith Show, this is definitely my favorite. The detailed episode summaries are a breath of fresh air, and point out lil things you never bothered to take stock of. And the comments from the writers and actors make it even better! Man, I wish something like this would come out for The Monkees' TV show! If you like The Andy Griffith Show, you MUST have this book in your collection!

SAY HEY TO GOOBER.......2005-02-07
this was a very good book. it has a lot of info on george and his life on and off tv. i just wish it had a little more about his life on the andy griffith show. but all and all you can't go wrong with this book. i met george about 10 years ago and he is a vey nice person and very down to earth. good job george i did enjoy the book.
George Lindsey tells it like it is, baby!.......2003-04-18
This is the fourth book I have read on the subject of The Andy Griffith Show... Mr George Lindsey portrayed the character of "Goober" on this show and it's spin-off Mayberry RFD, and also on Hee-Haw. Not many people know that Mr. Lindsey was a student at the American Theatre Wing, attending on the GI Bill, and was trained in the Stanislavski Method of acting. His life story in this book is at once compelling and inspiring, for he truly is a student from the "school of hard knocks". Anyone wanting to know what it was like for a struggling actor starting out in the 50's trying to break into show business, and all the ups and downs of fame that comes with an actor's life, will be fascinated. He tells us in detail about all the people he has known, and experiences--both good and bad, with warmth and a sly sense of humor! He tells some crazy stories about himself that may raise a few eyebrows, but his candor is refreshingly honest in this day and age. I now have a new respect for Mr. Lindsey, and his often misunderstood character, the loveable Goober Pyle. You will too after reading this book!
Goober Rules!! Great Book!!Should Be on Video!!.......2002-09-23
Besides of this book having alot of factual data about the reknowned"Andy Griffith Show"and "HEE HAW" .There's also imformation about George Lindsey who portrayed Goober on that show who wasn't quite as popular as Barney Fife but when Don Knott's left the show,I think Goober(George Lindsey)contributed greatly to help keep the show popular until the series ended. Both Andy Griffith and Don Knotts have video biographies about their life and rich careers.I would like to see in the future that both superb actors George Lindsey(Goober) and Jim Nabors(Gomer) will someday deservingly have video biographies. Also Jim Nabors(also from Alabama) needs to write an autobiography about him and his rich career without all the dirt and sensationalism!!It's been long overdue!!We're all anxiously waiting!!
Highly Entertaining.......2001-04-05
A long-time admirer of George Lindsey the actor, I am now also an admirer of Mr. Lindsey as an author and, more importantly, as a fine human being. Although some of the details of his early life were quite sad, this story is an affirmation of the value of determination, hard work, and talent. Once the reader has started, it is hard to stop. The narrative flows nicely, and provides the reader with a wealth of interesting information and insights from a man who has made generations laugh. Thank you, Mr. Lindsey - Well done!
He's not such a Goober.......2000-07-27
George has come forth and given fans the details they crave, the stories we hoped to read, and an even closer look at celebrity told by someone who seemed to handle it better than most.
As a fan of almost any sitcom star book I can find, this one took me a while to purchase. After all, it was Goober. After a chapter or two I was reading full speed to the end. Not only was it entertaining and informational but I learned things. Always the hallmark of a good book.
I have new respect for George Lindsey.
