Percy's Odyssey is another fantastic trip into modern Greek myth.......2007-09-13

In the second book of the modern Greek-mythological Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, Percy discovers that Camp Half-Blood is in danger as their borders are weakening. Even worse, his cross-dressing satyr best friend Grover is in danger of getting married. Percy, his friend and daughter of Athena, go on a quest to save Grover and retrieve the Golden Fleece, doing a great impression of Odysseus along the way. While the book isn't as imaginative and strong as the first in the series, it continues Riordan's witty prose and clever updating of Greek mythology and Greek hero quests (I just go geek for that stuff). Percy's issues with his absent father are compounded with the discovery and shame of his half-brother. Percy's father-issues reflect a very grown up issue: that of feeling abandoned by our God. At heart, this intelligent series isn't just about the greater and universal truths of Greek mythology and the problems of identity and growing up, but about family and the bonds of blood, even the most dysfunctional family in history: that of the ancient Greek divinity. The next edition of the Percy Jackson series, picks up a few months after the first book The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1)left us. This time Percy, our young half-god hero, has to deal with even more problems then ever.

The half-blood camp is now in danger of being attacked and over run by monsters who were once held out of it's grounds by a tree. The tree has been poisoned and time is running out before the camp will be over run for good. It's up to Percy and his friend Annabeth to get the golden fleece from an evil cyclops who has also captured Grover, his satyr friend.

Joining Percy this time is a young cyclops, Tyson who turns out to be more then he seems, much to Percy's surprise. His great strength and immunity to fire will come in more then handy for Percy on his quest to stop things before they even get worse. Now with Charon banned from camp, his rival daughter of Ares being put on the quest instead of him and Luke, his former friend still out there causing trouble things have gone from bad to worse over the short summer break.

The follow up is pretty good and continues the story nicely. It was lacking in a few places that the first book did deliver on. Like the variety of monsters and fun that seemed to flow through the first adventure. This time it was mostly focused on cyclops and lacking of the character development that was fun the first go around. But that is minor problems if anything. The book delievers the same fun and situations that we fell in love with the first time around. The action is constant as are the refernces to mythology that Rick Riordan uses nicely in a cute and fun twist to relate it to modern times. The explanation for why there are so many Starbucks around was just one of many weird notions that Riordan came up with and for some reason in this universe as we are reading it, we don't question the logic we accept it and want more of it.

If you enjoyed the first, this is must get. It picks up the characters and adventure where it left us and adds in even more twists and turns then we were left with the first go around. Its a never ending story that keeps building up to more and more to look to and figure out. Slight bits of info are leaked to us in this book that will come into play later but are still left open for interpretation.

I can't say this book is better then the first but it is just as good and will most certainly leave you wanting more. Riordan seemed to plan everything out quite well and the reader will also realize that this is getting quite good and deep. As an older reader I can say this book is fun for people of all ages. Check it out, its an adventure you will love to continue on gladly.

A place in my home!.......2007-08-26

An extension of the first book in this series, Rick Riordan truly finds a unique perspective of a young boy trying to fit in the Olympian world and finding his comfort and power in the sea. Needless to say, it took a short day for me to read this book from cover to cover and left me looking forward to the next book. Definitely not for children only - adults will love this book as much as young adults; maybe even more!

exciting mythology.......2007-08-13

I have been a teacher for 50 years. After reading Rick Riordan's spin on the adventures of Percy Jackson, I am thrilled that someone has chosen to present mythology in such an enticing format.
I would like to have had these books way back then to make the stories more alive.
For me personally this trilogy renews my facination with greek mythology.

Read as a child myself, who does not have this book?? If you don't-- get one! My children love it, I love it, even my husband loves it! It's fun, fun, fun! And kids LOVE to act it out quoting verbatim after reading for the 123rd time! Must have for the family library! (hang onto it even after they've grown, let them have it to read to their kids!)

I like reading this story to my little girl. She loves the unique pictures and the story line makes her giggle. It is something different than the normal fairy tale stories, which I happen to be sick of. I think it is a fun book for both me and my little girl to read.

This is an awesome pop up book! I bought it for my 3 year old's B-Day. He loves looking at the book while I read to him about the prehistoric Mega-Beasts. I actually have learned a lot myself from this book. Although you would normally think this book is for boys. My six year old daughter also enjoys me reading these books to her. They are fun and very educational. I am a high school teacher and I really think this pop up book would be very valuable to any science classroom. I liked this book so much I also purchased the other two in the set!

This is a great children's book as well as for adults. I love the wee free men as only Pratchett can describe them. The "sharkies" and "big job" are personal favorites. This book has been read several times in my household and we actually gave a copy to our nephew for his birthday one year. He liked it so much he has asked for more titles by Pratchett.

As an avid Terry Pratchett reader, I believe there are two kinds of his book: good and great. A Hat Full of Sky is of the good variety, as it stands on its own. However, I believe it's a great chapter in the larger work of the Discworld series. He has something very important to say here about responsibility, about relationships within the community, and about deep morality . . . I think that Pratchett's sympathies lie deeply with his witches, and watching this witch grow up is his lesson to us . . . I laughed and cried, and went away for the better.

(And ignore the Harry Potter comparisons. While I think Rowling is a fine author, Pratchett is the better storyteller, in the old, old sense of the term. His stories crackle with the energy of seeing all the parts of ourselves leaping back at us.)

Not All Giants are the Same.......2007-09-24

Imagine being taken away by someone or something, which is 100 times bigger than you are. Imagine flying over continents in amazing speeds in the ear of a giant, and save the world from human-eating giants. In The BFG, by Roald Dalh, this is what happens to Sophie, an orphan living in England, who is kidnapped by a giant in the middle of the night and taken away to a far away place.

Her only fault is to be awake and be watching the giant when he is peeking into the bedrooms of others' houses. She is terrified and thinks she will be a meal to this giant. However, she finds out that his name is The BFG: The Big Friendly Giant, who does not eat human beings. He is unlike the other giants who are bigger, who travel to different countries and eat children and adults for dinner. Once Sophie makes friends with the friendly giant, she decides to stop the carnivorous giants from eating more people in the world with the help of the BFG in a very clever way - through dreams that the BFG collects!

Although the BFG is a giant, he is not like the others: he is unique. He does not eat people. He is a Big Friendly Giant. After reading this book we cannot say all giants are dangerous or bad. There is always one that is unique, and one that saves the day. This is a great book to teach about different people in the world. We cannot generalize about people, for example, "Turkish people are lazy." One is apt to find an exception to the rule. It requires courage and an open mind to discover the unique.

The BFG is a fun book to read. The author, Roald Dahl, uses made up words to show that the BFG is not properly schooled because he does not know how to speak "proper" English. So, instead of saying, "Cross your fingers," he says, "Cross your figglers." These words force the reader to figure out what he really means. The way the giant talks is also funny and grammatically wrong: "I is hungry." "Am I right or left?" "Bonecrunching Giant only gobbles human beans from Turkey."

I love The BFG. It has been nice to get lost in the world of a giant and identify with him. Not a lot of books talk about being a vegetarian. Although it is about giants, I like the idea that he is not killing people or animals to eat. It is a very lighthearted book. Reading about where the BFG and his companions live took me to an imaginary land. How he collects dreams and stores them in glass containers was a delight to read.

Every adult should read this book to escape the silliness and stress of the real world. I especially recommend it to people who love playing with languages and making up their own words. I love the made up words, such as "phizzwizard" for a great dream or "trogglehumper" for a nightmare. His everyday sayings are also changed into strange BFG-language very creatively: "Oh, save our solos!" for "Save our souls."

On the other hand, it might be a hard book to read for students who learn English as a second language because they may not have the foundation of the English vocabulary to figure out what these made-up words may mean. This would be a great book to read to children. If kids get confused, they can always ask the adult who is reading it for clarification so the fun does not get spoiled.

The BFG is a classic by Roald Dahl, who I think is one of the best authors I have read books by. It begins with a girl named Sophie being kidnapped by a giant from a home for orphans in England. Naturally, she is frightened of him at first, but as she gets to know the Big Friendly Giant (BFG), she hatches a plot to help him get rid of his nasty neighbours.

I particularly like this book, because unlike many other books with children overcoming problems, instead of adults helping the child, Sophie actually helps the queen of England get rid of a problem. This has great action, but it could also be a comedy because of the funny scenes, which is why I like it so much (I love funny books). I would recommend this book to anybody, child or adult, who likes funny books with some action.

I loved this book. I read it to my daughters 3rd grade class 2 years ago, and am now reading it to my son's 3rd grade class. It takes about 6 readings and the kids really look forward to it.

BFG is a fantastic book that I would recommend for all ages. The story opens up when a dark shadow snatches Sophie, and takes her away to a whole new world. The dark shadow formed when her head was under a blanket. When she got to her final destination she saw the BFG.

BFG stands for Big Friendly Giant, so he is not one of those human eating, bone crunching giants. He has huge ears and wrinkly skin. His hair color is gray. But he doesn't have very much hair. So he is mainly bald.

Sophie decides that everything needs to be stopped, and the BFG is going to help her. After killing a few
bone crunching, rude giants. Sophie asked the queen
for some help to stop the other giants. They made a trap and they fell into it and died. That is how the book ended.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I hope someday
everyone will have a chance to read it. I definitely give this book 5 stars!!!

This book is amazing and It has great illustrations. You'll have to look at the book over and over just to see everything in it. I wouldn't recommend it for small children unless you are doing the handling.

Both my husband and I loved this book as children, and now our son does too! It drags the child into the action of the story, and they love doing what Grover asks them not to. I have not yet met the child who didn't enjoy it.

This is such a cute little story - such a fun book to read as it has many opportunities to add character in your voice fluctuation. It is smaller in size so it travels easily. This was one of my favorites as a child.

I have loved this book ever since I read it to my oldest son (who's now 16) and I recently re-purchased it for my one year old and one of my nephews. They both love this book as much as I do. It's an adorable little story!

The "monster craze" among baby-boomers, sparked by the release of Universal Studios' horror classics to television in the late '50s, gave birth to a new phenomenon -- the monster magazine. Famous Monsters of Filmland, filled with monster photos and articles on horror movies and their stars, was the premier publication for young horror film fans.

Issues of the new magazine practically leapt off the newsstand shelves and into kids' hands due in no small way to their striking cover paintings by Basil Gogos. Like a Bizarro world Norman Rockwell, his stylish portraits of horror film characters and stars were seen on magazine covers throughout the '60s and '70s. Gogos' interpretations of movie monsters like Frankenstein, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, and the Phantom of the Opera, breathed new life into the old black and white images. His amazing use of color and bold, impressionistic brushwork gave a sense of both excitement and sophistication to his paintings which has never been matched.

THE BEST ART FROM THE BEST ARTIST.......2007-09-03

First of all...Like so many reviewers before me have said; almost every boy that grew up in the '50s & '60s anxiously collected our 35 cents every month so we could go to the local candy store & buy the latest issue of Famous Monsters of Filmland. This magazine became our bible & 4E Ackerman became our surrogate father. More than 45 years have passed; but I can still remember those magnificent covers as though it were yesterday. Basil Gogos painted the cover of the Gorgo issue which had a blue background & also the Vincent Price issue which had a white background,etc. This Book displays all of Basil Gogos outstanding cover art which graced the cover of FM for so many years. Don't take my word for it...ask Stephen King, Rick Baker, George Lucas, Stephen Spielberg, John Landis, Rob Zombie & a host of others..This book is an absolute delight for the senses & like fine art is meant to be treasured,

I'm in agreement with another reviewer that mentioned the book could have been better written. That being said, it is well worth the price for all the fantastic paintings and drawings. A must for every fan of horror and sci-fi art.

Even without text, this book would've earned 4 stars, just for the impressiveness of Gogos' work. Within this book are large, crystal-clear repros of his most famous monster cover paintings, as well as samples of his illustration work.
The only setback for this book is its lack of depth in the text. It seems that whoever was sent to interview Basil didn't ask too many questions, didn't want to really know too much about him except for his general acheivements, and didn't ask him for a demonstration of how he works. Among all of the great pics, some candid ones of the artist would've been nice, most notably a pic of his studio.
Still, the images are so rich in color and character. Worth it!

If you were fortunate to have been born between 1950 and 1970 or so, you're lucky to be a part of a wonderful fraternity. Like me, you are a "monster kid". Monster Kids are the generation that grew up with Shock Theater and campy horror movie hosts, old Aurora model kits, classic Universal horror films on 8MM, and...a fantastic magazine called Famous Monsters of Filmland. Famous Monsters was edited by legendary collector and Sci-Fi sage Forrest Ackerman and one of the great attractions throughout the years were the magnificent magazine covers painted by Basil Gogos. From Vanguard Productions comes "The Famous Monster Movie Art of Basil Gogos." Basil Gogos has rightfully been called, "The World's Most Famous Monster Artist." His bold, expresionistic use of color is what caught the eye of little ghouls like myself and my friends. Edited by Kerry Gammill and J. David Spurlock and with an introduction by Rob Zombie, the book provides a dazzling display of Gogos' art not only from Famous Monsters, but from many other magazines, books, and films.

In fact, his first professional sale was not a monster, but rather a cover for a western paperback (reprinted in the book) in 1959. Gogos did numerous covers in many different genres including westerns, war, jungle adventures, spicy adventures, and more. Dozens of examples of his work from this period are included. His first cover for Famous Monsters of Filmland appeared on the cover of issue #9 from November, 1960, depicting Vincent Price from "The House of Usher". For the first time, kids who were used to only knowing them from black & white films now saw their monster heroes in bold color thanks to Gogos. In all, Gogos did 48 covers of Famous Monsters and they are among the most popular issues for collectors. Everyone has their favorite Gogos Famous Monster cover...for me it was his rendition of Boris Karloff as the Mummy from issue # 58. The fine detail of the withered, dead-eyed mummy still mesmerizes me. Issue #56 featuring Gogos painting of Karloff as the Frankenstein's monster for the Karloff tribute issue is another favorite. Basil provides valuable insight to his legions of fans by discussing the various paints, styles, and techniques that he's employed over the years.

Gogos would eventually move into doing fine art as well as non-monster commercial illustration including work for many years at a New York advertising agency. But much like the victims of those classic monster films, Gogos found he could not, for long, escape his beloved creatures. The 1990's brought a renewed interest in Gogos' monster art and soon he was back doing new paintings for trading card companies, CD cover art for The Misfits and Rob Zombie, and a whole new generation of monster magazines such as Monsterscene, making him more popular than ever. Gogos even did the concept art for a series of U.S. Postage stamps in 1997 that featured the classic monsters. The book features comments and tributes from such luminaries as Sara Karloff, Ken Kelly, Forrest Ackerman, Roger Corman, and Rick Baker. In all there are over 150 color and 50 black & white illustrations in the 160 page book. For monster kids like myself, who are all "grown up" now, Basil Gogos will always have a special place in our hearts. His Famous Monsters of Filmland covers take us back to a simpler time of true chills and thrills and I can think of no other book that would please a monster fan more than "The Famous Monster Movie Art of Basil Gogos." Like many of the books from Vanguard Productions, it is available in several different editions: There is a softcover, a hardcover, and a deluxe hardcover that is signed by Basil Gogos and includes a 16 page bonus folio and comes in a slipcase. The Deluxe, signed, slipcased edition was an instant sell-out and is already selling for big bucks on the collector's market. My highest recommendation!

Amazing Book!.......2007-06-09

I can't get over how incredible this book is! I was excited by the titles and reviews but wasn't sure how it would be received by my kids. They were rivoted by the book (my intonations helped a bit ;) and as soon as we finished we did some great role-playing of what makes the monster grow and shrink. I'm so happy - what a great tool to refer to in our everyday conversations! THANK YOU authors!

I am amazed that my kids have jumped on this book and even offered to loan it to a teacher. Easy to read and funny as well this book has it all, in a way kids can understand. Each of my two boys has read and reread this self esteem guide for youn adult/ preteen.

I think this is a great book with such a great message. I plan on reading this to my son as much as possible! This is a great book to start reading early on to help children better accept themselves, etc.

Kids and Adults Will Benefit.......2002-03-09

Both my 4 1/2 year old son and my 6 1/2 year old daughter loved this book and the others in the
series we've read. The pictures and the advice are fun, entertaining and helpful. Be warned,
however, this book is a kids' style book. Don't let the high price fool you. It is structured
like the longish Dr. Seuss Books (Cat in the Hat, One Fish Two Fish, etc.). The only reason it
didn't get 5 stars is the high price tag. Most of the kids books we've bought like this one are
about 6-9 dollars. ...is quite a lot for a 5-10 minute read. Other than the price tag, however
this book is great for the grade school age kid. I worry that the 8-10 year olds may find it a
little babyish or uncool, but K-2nd age is perfect. Pre-schoolers may be a bit young to get all
the benefits of it, but they will enjoy it anyway.
