Book Description

How can human beings kill or brutalize multitudes of other human beings? Focusing particularly on genocide, but also on other forms of mass killing, torture, and war, Ervin Staub explores the psychological, cultural, and societal roots of group aggression. He sketches a conceptual framework for the many influences on one group's desire to harm another: cultural and social patterns predisposing to violence, historical circumstances resulting in persistent life problems, and needs and modes of adaptation arising from the interaction of these influences. Such notions as cultural stereotyping and devaluation, societal self-concept, moral exclusion, the need for connection, authority orientation, personal and group goals, "better world" ideologies, justification, and moral equilibrium find a place in his analysis, and he addresses the relevant evidence from the behavioral sciences. Within this conceptual framework, Staub then considers the behavior of perpetrators and bystanders in four historical situations: the Holocaust (his primary example), the genocide of Armenians in Turkey, the "autogenocide" in Cambodia, and the "disappearances" in Argentina. Throughout, he is concerned with the roots of caring and the psychology of heroic helpers. In his concluding chapters, he reflects on the socialization of children at home and in schools, and on the societal practices and processes that facilitate the development of caring persons, and of care and cooperation among groups. A wide audience will find The Roots of Evil thought-provoking reading.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling analysis into the causes of mass violence and hope for the future.......2006-01-02

The Roots of Evil is an important book, both in its application of a comprehensive theoretical lens to the problem of mass violence and in its practical usefulness for efforts to prevent genocide from happening again. Staub explains how difficult conditions combine with social/political events to enable inter-group violence using detailed historical examples. His analysis shines light on the darkest actions of human beings, making sense of how neighbors can turn against each other. The book also offers hope that mass violence can be prevented, especially through efforts to humanize the "other" and speak out during the early events that can lead to genocide. In a world in which dehumanization remains all too common, this book will remain critical reading for years to come. It has been an inspiration for me, and for many others working in diverse fields related to peacebuilding. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars An important book.......2005-12-19

This book, by one of today's most eminent genocide scholars, presents a simple to grasp analysis of the main human drives causing mass violence and genocide. Its ability to combine these drives into an easily understandable system makes it extremely useful for people that need to deal with this subject on the ground in combating ethnic violence. Professor Staub's book has inspired communication campaigns against the hatred fanning the genocide and mass killings in Rwanda, the DRC and Burundi. There, survivors of one of the last centuries' worst outbreaks of mass murder, find comfort in the way his analysis sheds light on how seemingly incomprehensible acts could be committed by the most seemingly normal people. around them.

1 out of 5 stars A pompous plan for solving the world's problems..........2003-09-16

This book begins with the arrogant assertion that psychology in general, and the author in particular, can change mankind and create a "caring and compassionate" society in which genocide and all lesser forms of evil will be unthinkable. It then goes through several hundred pages of repetitive ramblings, introducing and summarily dismissing the theories of Hobbes, Freud, and many others, relegating Nietzche to the position of Hitler's ego, and ultimately arriving at a conclusion that could have been summed up in a short article: humans are frustrated by "difficult life conditions" (a phrase which grates on the mind with each repetition after the first 50 pages of overusage), which causes them to join together to lash out against those who they deem responsible. His interpretations of the causes of the four instances of genocide which he chooses to discuss seem absurd in some cases, and contradict themselves in others. The last two chapters outline the author's naive plan for the construction of a warm and fuzzy world of understanding and compassion. Even if his plan were plausible, his view of human nature is ultimately deluded and irrational, and it is therefore of no value. Some may say this reviewer is cynical or jaded, but I prefer realism to useless optimism. An authoritative book on the psychological drives behind mass killings which brings together the ideas of many great minds and uses convincing evidence to support itself would be most welcome. This, however, is not it.

5 out of 5 stars Psychology and Political Violence.......2000-06-17

This book should be read by every political scientist interested in the role of mass violence in politics. It explores how politically salient identities can become the psychological basis for violence.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic.......2006-10-06

I actually used to know the author twenty years ago while spending a summer in Charleston, during an internship with the Historic Charleston Foundation back in my college years...his character and personality really come out in this novel.

In fact, he once told me of several supernatural incidents involving voodoo that he believed really happened. In other words, he really believed in the possibility of the sorts of things that took place in the book. He actually comes from among the First Families there 'South of Broad Street'.

I'm very proud of him and recommend his book! :) It really flows.

5 out of 5 stars Root of All Evil, I read it every Halloween.............2006-07-29

Late to the dance, I bought this book in 1997 while in Charleston at a book signing held by the author in The Charleston Place Hotel. David signed the book that I would never see Charleston in the same way after reading his terrific story and he was correct! I continue to visit Charleston every year at least once and read the book each October because it fits that season so well. I remain hopeful that a second novel is being considered, perhaps a continuation of the story, The Root of All Evil. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Farrow Shows the Real Charleston.......2000-07-20

Aside from a page-turning good story, Mr. Farrow brings to life the Charleston that exists behind the tinsel and tourism. This is the real Charleston, with all of its beauty and blemishes. It's the world of old families and tradition that's quickly being lost. If you love what you see in Charleston, read this book and get a sense of what you otherwise would never see.

5 out of 5 stars The Root of All Evil.......2000-01-11

This is a true page turner! The sights and sounds of Charleston are alive throughout the book.A great vacation read.If you like horror with character (and characters),you'll love this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Root of All Evil.......2000-01-08

A great book which contains an element not common in a lot of todays reading..the author has "lived" these moments..not researched them..and has woven this into a great story. Once you get past the character building in the beginning it hunkers down and the real flavors come out..including thought provoking elements involving man and how he defines himself in the universe (you know those we have in the quiet moments). The author does an excellent job defining "charm", something alien to the roaring masses, but certainly an aspect we should preserve....the conclusion pulls it all together (much beter than that other book..11:30 in the garden)..read it!

Book Description

'What force prompts human beings to destroy other people, nations and our environment -- ignoring the results and knowledge gleaned from thousands of years of evolution?' This volume explores that question, with which it opens. The book is the product for four remarkable women from quite different backgrounds -- Christian, Jewish, Muslim -- whose co-operation is a living example of the approach to life and religion that they commend.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wisdom, honesty, and sharing a new vision of hope........2007-05-28

The Root of All Evil is an eye opener for the covert patriarchal mind-set of cultures world wide. It is a timely book for self-inventory about belief systems and where our beliefs originate. Four women, from diverse cultures, bring to the surface how patriarchy has been the primary cause of suffering within and between cultures for thousands of years. These women illuminate, through self-searching of their cultures, the reasons that can pit one culture against the other. An important question is pondered, why do we believe what we believe? This question invites the reader to search for the answer as well. The authors' point out that cultures are programmed from birth to believe fallacies concerning other culture's religions and governments. The authors' also point out the importance of honoring feminine principles by bringing compassion, peace, and gender balance into our troubled world. This book holds an urgent message for all of us.

Book Description

Brandt Dodson follows the success of the first two books in his Colton Parker Mystery series—Original Sin and Seventy Times Seven—with another intriguing story.

Wealthy businessman Berger Hume is dying. And the one thing he wants most is the one thing his millions cannot buy—a relationship with the son he has never met. As Colton Parker, private investigator, searches to locate the son, he finds himself the target of threats from a powerful gang with ties that extend to high–level government.

The twists of this case cause Colton to question his own values. Will he risk the one thing that matters most? And will this race against time become a race for his own life?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Awesome series.......2007-09-03

This new series are thrilling mysteries. Colton, as a detective, does not hold back in getting information from potential witnesses and he's not easily intimidated. Very much nail biting, humorous and action all rolled up in one. I recommend all four books in this series. I'm currently reading the 4th.

5 out of 5 stars A very wild ride.......2007-07-14

Colton Parker is back and this time he's in for a wild ride. When Colton Parker is hired to find Miles Poole, the possible son of multi-millionaire Berger Hume, he's brought into a world of biker gangs, money, guns, corruption, and murder for hire. With few leads, Parker has to encourage reluctant individuals to divulge little tidbits of information in order for him to follow the clues to find out exactly who Miles Poole is, what he does, where to find him, is he Hume's son, who wants Miles dead, and what does an influential senator have to do with any of this. Oh, and who's hunting for Parker? Lots of questions, with very few answers.

The Root of All Evil was better than Dodson's previous two books. He did a wonderful job of writing a very intriguing story, while at the same time taking a relaxed approach with working the message into the story. The interaction between Parker and Callie was handled better this time. Instead of several pages spent evaluating her psyche, we see her reaction and how she's handling new situations. I greatly prefer this approach.

The story was excellently written. Multiple little mysteries that tied into an entire complicated plot is always fun to read. I was very pleased with this book and looking forward to reading many more by Dodson.

4 out of 5 stars Good book and a good continuation, but... .......2007-03-18

... it leaves you wanting # 4 in the series. To me, it was good, but not quite as good as the second one. I mean, close, but it was missing one part that has kept me very interested in the series. The characters personal life. Ever since the start of the series, Dodson has served up both Parker's professional and private life. Root of All Evil didn't touch as much on the personal side as the others. It may have set up some future developments, but the story itself didn't really develop it much, and that leaves me really depending on number 4.

All the same, it's a great series and refreshing reading among the usual big-shots of inspirational fiction. Way to go Brandt Dodson.

5 out of 5 stars Gumshoes....hmmmm......I never knew!!!.......2007-03-14

I love Colton Parker. He's my favorite gumshoe. I didn't really know gumshoes before I met Colton, but he's intrigued me with his reality. Colton's reality, if looked at through the world's spectacles, is grim and gritty and maybe a little lonely. If looked at through the spectacles of faith, his world holds answers to secrets and love from his daughter and even his food 'friend'. But, Colton doesn't have the answer to the ulitmate secret yet, although he is trying.

In Root, Colton ia enlisted to find the possible son of dying multi-millionaire Berger Hume. Seems simple enough, for a plot that is, but author Dodson layers in faith, deciet, intrigue and lust, carefully leading the reading on a path of discovery where at times we don't want to go. Yet, we are never dissatisifed.

[...]You know something is great when you're doing your sit time between dives in Belize and a fictional character is on your mind!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Intriguing suspense set in Indianapolis.......2007-02-27

The plot to this PI mystery is filled with twists and turns that keep you guessing and wondering if Colton will be able to protect his charge and his child while unraveling who's behind the threat to one of the areas richest families. I liked how this book was not predictable and took the plot places I'd hoped it wouldn't go. The book had the hard-edged feel of a PI novel without diving into language to convey the coarseness of the characters.

The characters - even the antagonists - had facets that made them human. Dodson didn't fall into the trap of making the characters cardboard props to the plot. And I wasn't expecting the son of an extremely wealthy man to be so far removed from his father's world. Yet he still had that hole in his life that made him long to know if his father could love him.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and it is not the last book of Dodson's I will read.

Book Description

It's back to Columbia Internet, "the friendliest, hardest-working, and most neurotic little Internet Service Provider in the world," for our third installment from the hit online comic, User Friendly. The cast: Quake-obsessed techies, self-absorbed sales staff, well-meaning execs, and assorted almost-humans. The background: too little office space, warring operating systems, and eternally clueless customers. Tag along as geeks go camping, Mike finds a new use for silly putty, and Stef decides to beef up his Quake skills with the Acme Forced-Feedback Enemy-Denial Smackdown Ergonomic Game Chair. If you've read the first two User Friendly editions from O'Reilly, you don't need an introduction to Greg, Jeff, Miranda, the Dust Puppy and the others. But if you haven't, welcome to the world of the hard-core geek, where humor--especially at one's own foibles--can be a survival skill. Since this is true of most work environments, chances are you won't have to know Unix or be able to log in as "root" in order to get the joke. Illiad's community is truly global--the comic's one-million-plus readers log on from Israel, Brazil, Iceland, New Zealand, and Greece, among other far-flung locations. All kinds of people seem drawn to the strip-- from 8-year-old girls to 81-year-old women--a large, diverse, and very loyal community.

You have to be a computer geek to understand the humor. If you are, and especially if you have a unix/linux background and/or have worked with internet or other computer support you will find this one of the most hysterical comics around.

5 out of 5 stars The 3rd USER FRIENDLY collection: strips from 2000.......2005-06-21

"Am thinkink. Erwin, to fight such big powerful company as AOL, am to be fightink fire with fire. Da?"
"Umm...what did you have in mind?"
"Am to becomink half computer, half human, like Borg. Then to become super administrator of all Borg functions."
"That means...you'll become..."
"Da. I will becomink root of all evil."
"Don't do it, Pitr! Don't go to the bad place!"
- Pitr the techie and Erwin the AI, in conversation

After opening with a few post-Y2K-bust strips, the Columbia Internet crew having stockpiled lots of soda and pork rinds for the occasion, the book settles into its more usual long-running plot threads.

Stef's been given the title "Manager: S&M." ("It stands for SALES AND MARKETING you depraved monkeys.") In his efforts to sell a line of products the same way that the Pokemon empire does their stuff, he persuades Pitr to make collectible Unix text editors. Pitr, in fact, goes through several evil little anti-Unix projects in the book to keep his hand in as a budding Evil Genius.

Other developments in the continuing story:
- AJ struggles to figure out how to court Miranda properly (badly timed in light of the "I love you" virus).
- Stef (who as a Windows user sees Unix holy wars as an added bonus of his job) makes the mistake of interfering in Miranda's life, which leads to a lot of Matrix crossover references.
- Mike becomes a Sims addict. ("Hey! Are you *allowed* to have four wives?")
- Greg's tech support calls turn into a game-help hotline.
- Pitr has an evil twin brother in Sales who affects the same fake accent.
- Introducing Sid Dabster, the aging ex-HP tech who becomes something of a blood enemy of Pitr's.

And, of course, the fantasy elements, such as:
- Parallels between Steve Case of AOL and Anakin Skywalker.
- Greg's Linux daemons (think "shoulder angel" here).

4 out of 5 stars A little dated now, but funny nonetheless..........2004-04-27

Although a bit dated, containing strips related to the Y2K craze here and there, this little book is still otherwise as funny and timely as any commentary on the computer industry could be. The X-Men and Borg references are absolutely hysterical. If you work in a tech job, you should be reading User Friendly.

5 out of 5 stars Very funny stuff.......2004-02-29

If you don't find at least some of the strips very funny, you should have your geek status removed. :)

4 out of 5 stars Amusing, but not for everyone (not even all geeks :-).......2001-12-28

This book is great. It was given to me by a male friend who thought I'd appreciate the drama. Well I sure did. The story line is flawless and you just never know what's going to happen next. There are many situations going on at once but the story never becomes confusing. You'll wanna read the whole book in one shot and if you think this book is good, wait til you read the novel to follow: "When Sould Mate" by the same author. When you finish that one you still wont be pleased, you'll want more and more. These stories are definitely addicting. I love them.

4 out of 5 stars This is another perfect example what money can do to an individual........2007-04-20

I happened to read the back of the book in Barnes and noble and decided to give it a shot, and I'll tell you what I was not disappointed. This book keeps your heart racing through the whole story; the suspense is a pleasant killer. You think you know what's going to happen, but you never know. I walked away from the book feeling like I personally knew the characters of the story, and even after you finish reading you still think about them.

We've been introduce to Klarke Taylor whom has not recovered from her former husband Harris leaving her for his cousin Tionne three years ago. He left her to raise their two preadolescent children almost alone. Depressed, financially, she is in worse shape as Harris had kept them in a comfortable lifestyle for the thirteen years they were married. Her parents are dead so she cannot turn to them, her bills are piling up as she is behind with all of them and the collectors harass her at home and at her job at Kemble and Steiner Printing. Desperate, Klarke and her friends Breezy and Jeva devise a scheme to trap a wealthy male. Through her printing firm's publishing customers, the trio targets bestselling author Reo Laroque, a bachelor with women desiring him, but seeks a virtuous woman although has one female Meka in his life. He enjoys exchanging email with KAT (Klarke) and thinks she is the one when they meet. The plan succeeds except that at every turn the trio gets deeper down a path that started unethical, but turned deadly.

There is no fairy tale involved in this book. It is very unpredictable and you will never guess the end of it. I liked the fact that she kept Harris in the lives of his kids regardless of the relationship that was or was not between him and Klarke. The ending had me wondering would I put myself in the same position as she did for her child. What is more important is that you can relate to the characters in the book. Author Joylynn M. Jossel done a great job putting this together while putting the right amount of: suspense, romance, and realism. Recommended.

Book Description

This exciting book is the first role-playing adventure module set in the newest 3rd edition Dungeons and Dragons campaign setting, the Kingdoms of Kalamar third edition. The epic story begins in the northern country of Shynabyth where the players are assembled to find the remnants of a meteor said to be made of the rare substance mithril. However, what they uncover is a plot to construct a powerful magic relic. Unfortunately the artifact is a tool for wickedness and the players soon find themselves on a quest to Reanaaria Bay to find the means to destroy the evil item and its insidious master, before she destroys them. The Root of All Evil is an official 3rd edition Dungeons and Dragons adventure for first level characters.

5 out of 5 stars Well written, very playable adventure series........2007-07-08

This is the first of three modules in the Coin of Power Trilogy.

I now have all three parts to this adventure set and I am very pleased with them.

The story starts with a simple quest to gather some precious materials from a meteorite and then it twists and turns as the players are introduced to various roadblocks that stand in the way of achieving various quests. The villain is introduced very early in this adventure -- long before the PCs are ready to deal with her. Therefore the players must rely upon NPCs/outsiders to help them complete their tasks. This calls for roleplaying beyond killing several critters in a dungeon and then gathering some loot and XP.

The books contain handy tear-outs to provide additional graphic flavor to the game. The 3 modules are self contained, but tie together nicely to create a quality adventure path.

I currently do not have the campaign sources for the Kingdoms of Kalamar, but now I'm motivated to get them.

Book Description

Lucy Trent is used to having the legend of her glamorous grandmother unearthed from time to time—the infamous silent-screen actress Lucretia von Wolff, whose life ended abruptly in a bizarre double murder and suicide at the Ashwood film studios in 1952. But when a body is found in the now-derelict studios, brutalized in a macabre echo of the 50-year-old case, disturbing facts about the past begin to emerge—facts that point back to the eerie tale of the child known as Alraune. The child named after Lucretia’s most famous film. The child who may never have existed at all. In the ensuing murder investigation, Lucy is to discover the truth about her family’s dark history—a history that spans the glittering concert halls of 1920s Vienna to the bleak environs of wartime Auschwitz.

Unlike the rest of her family, Lucy Trent has always rather enjoyed the legend of her grandmother Lucretia von Wolff, a screen siren of the silent movie era. Lucretia's life scandalously ended in 1952 in a film studio where a murder-suicide occurred.
Decades later a body is found in the now derelict studio. The legend of the mysterious child called Alraune (the name of Lucretia's best known film) springs up again. Does Alraune even exist?
Lucy delves into the well-buried secrets of her grandmother's past. Her quest spans the decadence of 1920s Vienna and the desolation of the concentration camps of the 1940s, all the while coming closer and closer to the truth about Alraune.
This novel had me gripped from start to finish, I simply couldn't put it down. If you buy this (and I highly recommend you do) you'll probably be up all night finishing it.

Book Description

Twisted Roots of Evil details the authors journey from her abusive upbringing in the rural south to survival at the turn of the millennium. As a child, Susan Kesegich and her sisters suffered extreme neglect, sexual, mental and physical abuse. Their father raped them and they watched him tie their mother to a tree, light a fire beneath her, and shoot at her. Marrying at the tender age of fourteen to escape the horror, Susan found herself in a marriage that rivaled her mothers for physical abuse. Six years later, she, too, was divorced, poor, uneducated, and lost. Although her life changed when she met her current husband, it was through the victimization of her father's second family that she ultimately found closure. With the help of Susan, her father was sentenced to life in prison for the abuse he committed against his second family.

This is a story that is heart wrenching but at the same time uplifting. This is a story that needed to be told. It details Susan's remarkable journey that captures the essence of survival in a dynamic, contemporary world. It tells everyone you can start out in this world with everything stacked against you but with pride, determination, and perseverance you can make a difference.

4 out of 5 stars Roots of Evil.......2005-10-10

Montell Williams interviewed the victims and I had to get the book. This book is well written and describes the horrors that these children went through and into their adult lives. The questions that were unanswered as children, the justice system, some answers, and the shock that another individual had to endure worse by the same hands of the perp. The author shows our human ability to grow past our upbringing to become "normal," successful individuals, yet also relates that remnants shall remain throughout our lives. This book leaves the reader pondering additional questions that cannot be answered.

5 out of 5 stars twisted roots of evil.......2005-09-30

It was the most heart wrenching book I have read in a very long time. I work with abused children in one form or another and it just tears my heart out ...I am thrilled that the family has tried to find peace and is trying to move on.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read Book..........2005-07-28

After I picked this book up and started reading it I couldnt put it down. The author is so vivid in her writing that it keeps you pinned to your seat. While reading the book its as though you can feel the fear that these children lived with on a day to day basis. This book sums up just how cruel some child abuse cases can really be.

5 out of 5 stars A truly amazing book!.......2001-03-01

If you are in an abusive relationship. . . this book will open your eyes! You can survive. The hurt can heal. . . and "you" must learn from the experience of others and break free.

5 out of 5 stars Twisted Roots of Evil.......2000-08-06

This book was an eye opening experience for me. Many of us tend to run from our past and refusing to deal with it. When i read the book it made me realize that i am not the only one as a child that has suffered at the hands of a trusted adult and will continue to tell others i know about TWISTED ROOTS OF EVIL, A real page turner, when i read it i had to keep a box tissue near me. Until more people open there eyes and realize this is happening and speak up and stop the abuse then it will continue.

    Book Description

"Evil is the most serious of our moral problems. All over the world cruelty, greed, prejudice, and fanaticism ruin the lives of countless victims. Outrage provokes outrage. Millions nurture seething hatred of real or imagined enemies, revealing savage and destructive tendencies in human nature. Understanding this challenges our optimistic illusions about the effectiveness of reason and morality in bettering human lives. But abandoning these illusions is vitally important because they are obstacles to countering the threat of evil. The aim of this book is to explain why people act in these ways and what can be done about it."--John Kekes

The first part of this book is a detailed discussion of six horrible cases of evil: the Albigensian Crusade of about 1210; Robespierre's Terror of 1793-94; Franz Stangl, who commanded a Nazi death camp in 1943-44; the 1969 murders committed by Charles Manson and his "family"; the "dirty war" conducted by the Argentinean military dictatorship of the late 1970s; and the activities of a psychopath named John Allen, who recorded reminiscences in 1975. John Kekes includes these examples not out of sensationalism, but rather to underline the need to hold vividly in our minds just what evil is. The second part shows why, in Kekes's view, explanations of evil inspired by Christianity and the Enlightenment fail to account for these cases and then provides an original explanation of evil in general and of these instances of it in particular.
