Book Description

Jordan Buchanan is thrilled that her brother and best friend are tying the knot. The wedding is a lavish affair–for the marriage of Dylan Buchanan and Kate MacKenna is no ordinary occasion. It represents the joining of two family dynasties. The ceremony and reception proceed without a hitch–until a crasher appears claiming to be a MacKenna guest. The disheveled and eccentric professor of medieval history warns that there’s “bad blood” between the couple’s clans, stemming from an ancient feud that originated in Scotland, and involving the Buchanan theft of a coveted MacKenna treasure.

Jordan has always led a cautious life and has used her intelligence and reason to become a successful businesswoman. So she is intrigued but skeptical of the professor’s claims that the feud has been kept alive by the grave injustices the Buchanans have perpetrated over the centuries. But when Noah Clayborne, a close family friend and a man who has never let a good time or a pretty girl pass him by, accuses Jordan of being trapped in her comfort zone, she determines to prove him wrong and sets out on a spontaneous adventure to the small, dusty town of Serenity, Texas, to judge the professor’s research for herself.

Maneuvering through a close-knit community in which everyone knows everyone else’s business, Jordan never anticipates the danger and intrigue that lie in her path, nor the threat that will shadow her back to Boston, where even in familiar surroundings, her life is at risk.

A powerful thug who rules by fear, a man who harbors a simmering secret, and an unexpected romance that pierces all defenses–beloved author Julie Garwood weaves these dazzling elements into a brilliant novel of romantic suspense. Shadow Dance is a searing tango of passion and peril.

5 out of 5 stars Shadow Dance - One Of Garwood's Best.......2007-09-29

Again Julie Garwood has enchanted me with one of her books about the Buchanan family. She has written another superb book that readers who appreciate romantic suspense will enjoy. Keep up your wonderful story telling.

2 out of 5 stars Julie...You REALLY Missed this Boat!.......2007-09-10

I have been eagerly awaiting Noah's story since Mercy, when it became obvious that he would be a recurring character. He is clearly a contemporary version of Cole Clayborne with his quick one-liners, witty charm, and undeniable way with the ladies. I was incredibly disappointed--actually a little heartbroken--to finally get my hands on Noah's story and find that he played second fiddle to a very dull Jordan Buchanan. In her previous contemporary novels, JG has done a thorough job of developing Noah as a likeable, believable, and all-around HOT character (although he is pretty slutty). After crafting such a solid foundation upon which to build Noah's potentially incredible story, Julie wasted him and all that his romance could have been with Shadow Dance. Noah was completely closed to the reader for most of the book. He was bland, unexciting, ordinary, and forgettable. I'm sad that Julie's readers will never get to witness the exciting romance that Noah could have had--with all of the charm, wit, temper, thunder and fight that I expected when he finally fell (in love). He didn't have to fight for a thing in this book. Pity. I was really hoping for some red-hot spark. What I found was much less. Poor Noah.

2 out of 5 stars Julie Garwood could do better.......2007-09-04

I have read and own everyone of Julie Garwood's books I love her she's one of my favorite authors her female heroins are always funny and have some odd characteristic that I love, but not this one she just seem like the runt of the family a family that always seem spirited and strong not week.I like the Buchanans triology and I always new Noah the Buchananas trusted best freind would get his own story but how sad for Noah it was a stale one......

5 out of 5 stars Shadow Dance.......2007-08-09

I loved reading any book by Julie Garwood. But getting to be updated about decendants of Cole from For the Roses was so great. I thought that this was an awesome read and could not put it down. I hope Julie continues to write about this amazing family in her future books.

5 out of 5 stars Noah's in love!.......2007-07-17

I really liked the book since I have read every JG book the fact that Noah is a decendent of Cole from From the Roses and Come the Spring and the Buchanans from Ransom. Finally Noah has found someone to keep him from womanizing everyone else. I hope she keeps going through the whole Buchanan clan. I really want to see what side of the law the youngest sibling winds up on.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Sensuality rating: 6

Perennial New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts's new Three Sisters Island trilogy is pure magic! No, I mean really magic. An intriguing combination of The Witches of Eastwick and Sleeping With the Enemy, Dance Upon the Air introduces readers to the idyllic town of Three Sisters Island. Reputedly conjured by a trio of sisters seeking to escape the Salem witch-hunts, the island remains a place of quiet refuge for one and all, including pretty Nell Channing who arrives in town afraid of her own shadow, with few possessions and no past. But the warm, sunny days and cool, windswept nights, as well as the loving concern of new friends--especially hunky sheriff Zack Todd--soon lure skittish Nell into a much-welcome fresh life. Nell's new boss, the captivatingly lovely bookstore owner Mia Devlin (look for Mia's story, hopefully, in the not-too-distant future), wonders from what or whom Nell is running. Mia treats Nell as she would a sister, which isn't too far off the mark, helping Nell discover and explore her inner resources while Zack's romantic attentions bring a rosy glow to Nell's cheeks and to her future. But something wicked this way comes… Will Nell be ready to face and conquer her past? Even with the love and support of Mia, Zack, and Zack's fellow police officer, his peppery, down-to-earth sister Ripley, Nell has the fight of her life--the fight for her life--on her hands. Roberts continues to delight fans and create new believers with her talent and imagination. --Alison Trinkle

5 out of 5 stars Fun Read!.......2007-09-10

I absolutely loved this book, and I can't wait to read the second in the trilogy. I loved the characters, the setting, everything! I have yet to read something by Nora Roberts that I dislike. Pick up one of her novels, you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The first in the triology leaves you wanting more..........2007-08-13

I finished the first in the triology this weekend and I couldn't wait to start the next book. This book was hard to put down and I found myself reaching for the book when I had more than a few minutes to savor it.Nora Roberts paints a vivid picture of the Island and its inhabitants. Her characters come alive on the pages making it easy to picture yourself in the setting and becoming involved in the drama. It's a great read and I can't wait to get to book three. Savoring book two....

5 out of 5 stars Great for Women who are or have been abused.......2007-07-04

This story is an example that women do not need to take domestic violence and there is a way out. It is a very romantic story with some "magic" involved. I recommend you check it out and see for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars classic Nora Roberts.......2007-05-15

I have audio tapes of this trilogy (Dance Upon the Air, Heaven and Earth, Face the Fire), purchased at a used book store, and enjoyed the story so much that I wanted the unabridged books on disc. The discs are well worth the purchase price. Narration and clarity of sound are excellent. This trilogy is my favorite Roberts trilogy -- pure escapism at its best. This set is worth a place in my permanent collection -- I'm sure I'll listen to it many times.

5 out of 5 stars Island Getaway.......2007-05-13

As usual, Nora Roberts delivers another excellent series. This series was one of the first Nora Roberts books I discovered.

Since then, and yeah, I'm a guy, and I lift weights, and I'm a straight macho guy, ad nauseum, but I love Nora Robert's writings, I have read thirty five of her books in the last three months.

The ladies at my favorite restaurant enjoy talking to me about Nora Roberts. I have a couple of them reading Nora Roberts and one lady and I are exchanging different copies of her books.

Enjoy this series. It is one of her best. It has the best blend of magic, romance, good plot twists, and strong characterization. Her series creates a desire in you to pick up the atlas and start hunting down the island and it's inhabitants.

And guys...with Nora Roberts you just might gather a little insight into the minds of these amazing female creatures. One hint...bring lots of chocolate and never forget what outfit and scent she wore the first time you met her.

Nora...I'm about to figure you out!

5 out of 5 stars It never Fails.......2007-05-27

Nora Roberts never fails to write a wonderfully creative and entertaining story that sweeps the reader into another world full of wit, humor, romance and love. These two emotionally packed novels show that Nora will always be able to catch a readers heart in the first few lines. With her obvious love of anything Irish, Nora takes the reader on a journey with a single mother of two trying to support herself and her family in the midst of question of he supposed wealth from her late husband in "The Last Honest Woman". Following is an account of a stage actress in "Dance to the Piper" who finds love in an unknown man who may ultimately be responsible for the success or failure of her current acting project. These two come highly recommended and if you are a fan of Nora's family stories, be sure not to miss the two other stories in this series Skin Deep and Without a Trace (found in O'Hurley's Return).

4 out of 5 stars Oldie But Goodie.......2006-10-21

This book contains the first 2 out of 4 stories about the dynamic O'Hurley family.
In the first book, Last Honest Woman, we meet Abby the middle triplet. She is a widow of many years raising two sons on a struggling horse farm. She has consented to let writer Dylan Crosby stay on her farm and write her deceased husbands biography in order to make some money. First Dylan has to decipher whats fact and whats fiction. A good start to the series.
In the second story, Dance To The Piper, we meet the youngest triplet, Maddy. She is a broadway star who is falling for her shows money man, Reed Valentine. These two couldn't be more opposite but you will be rooting for them all the way.
You will fall in love with the O'Hurley's and look forward to the next book that contains oldest triplet Chantel and big brother Trace's stories. This is old Nora, but a great read.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2006-08-15

In the book "The Last Honest Woman" we meet Abby, the middle triplet, who has had a rough marriage, and is now ready to talk about it. She agrees to be intreviewed on a book being written on her ex-husband who was killed in a race car accident. She opens her home, and the story of her life to sexy, hot Dylan Crosby. Abby is surprised when she starts feeling attracted to him because even though she agreed to tell Dylan Crosby about her rough marriage doesn't mean she's willing to tell the whole truth. As Dylan pushes Abby to tell him her darkest secret she starts to fall in love with him, and Dylan realizes he wont be able to type up the whole truth about Abby's life, for the reasons that he loves her, and can't bare to hurt her sons. This book was amazing, I loved how Nora kept you guessing as to what was Abby's secret, and why she didn't want anyone to find it out.
In the book "Dance to the Piper" we meet Maddy the youngest tripplet, whose is at the top of her career, about to star in a big, hit Broadway production thats being backed by Valentine records, Reed Valentine. Throughout the book, Maddy and Reed develop a relationship, that Reed doesn't want to be any part of. As Maddy falls in love with Reed, Reed has a difficult time believing that love is a real thing. As Maddy stuggles to be patient with Reed, and wonders why he doesn't believe in love, Reed tries to distant himself, not wanting to trust her. The problem with Reed is that he can't trust women after the betrayal he faced as a young kid. The story keeps you captivated and wondering what happen to Reed as a child, that he cant trust women. It also keep you guessing if Reed is ever going to realize he is in love and just accept it, or ruin everything between him and Maddy by pushing her away.
I definitely recomend you read these books, I thought they were great stories and I cant wait to read the other two, because throughout these books Nora dropped hints that Chantel had being recieving creepy calls, and I'm wondering what is going to happen in the third book. Hope you enjoy reading them.

4 out of 5 stars Born O'Hurley.......2006-07-01

1 out of 5 stars A complete mockery and repitition.......2006-06-09

if you've read old nora robert book's then you know what i'm talking about, it's not just this book, but all her books together, they have the same ultimate plot. it's basically like this; Either the hero or heroine know each other or they are introduced, then they act like they aren't attracted to each other, then the guy does something to make the gal go to bed with him, then they face some trials, like a killer coming closer or people opposed to heir love, then there's talk about marriage, and la-di-da, the nora roberts novel is complete!
i tried at least 16 of her books before i was convinced of this, i actually thought she could change so i kept buying and buying, i'm basically tired of the same plot and i've decided that i'll either burn these books or sell em, nora needs more imagination, wait lemme rephrase that, she needs a "LOT MORE IMAGINATION AND A LIFE".

So please nora, go watch more harry potter or something, even billy and mandy would give you a beautiful lesson in magination, most of your books are about sex.

"I say vagina because I want people to respond," says playwright Eve Ensler, creator of the hilarious, disturbing soliloquies in The Vagina Monologues, a book based on her one-woman play. And respond they do--with horror, anger, censure, and sparks of wonder and pleasure. Ensler is on a fervent mission to elevate and celebrate this much mumbled-about body part. She asked hundreds of women of all ages a series of questions about their vaginas (What do you call it? How would you dress it?) that prompt some wondrous answers. Standouts among the euphemisms are tamale, split knish, choochi snorcher, Gladys Siegelman--Gladys Siegelman?--and, of course, that old standby "down there." "Down there?" asks a composite character springing from several older women. "I haven't been down there since 1953. No, it had nothing to do with [American president] Eisenhower." Two of the most powerful pieces include a jagged poem stitched together from the memories of a Bosnian woman raped by soldiers and an American woman sexually abused as a child who reclaims her vagina as a place of wild joy.

Book Description

A poignant and hilarious tour of the last frontier, the ultimate forbidden zone, The Vagina Monologues is a celebration of female sexuality in all its complexity and mystery. Hailed as the bible for a new generation of women, it has been performed in cities all across America and at hundreds of college campuses, and has inspired a dynamic grassroots movement—V-Day—to stop violence against women. Witty and irreverent, compassionate and wise, Eve Ensler's Obie Award-winning masterpiece gives voice to real women's deepest fantasies and fears, guaranteeing that no one who reads it will ever look at a woman's body, or think of sex, in quite the same way again.

Loved by everyone from Calista Flockhart to Joy Behar, the talk of tabloids and TV, performed at over two hundred colleges every year for V-Day -- a dynamic grass-roots movement to stop violence against women -- The Vagina Monologues is a national phenomenon. Witty, irreverent, and wise, it has become the bible for a new generation of women. "You don't just hook up with Eve", says Glenn Close. "You become a part of her crusade". Next February, the crusade takes us to Madison Square Garden for V-Day 2001, a huge, all-star, day-long extravaganza and call to action for which Jane Fonda will make a triumphant return to the stage. The V-Day edition of The Vagina Monologues includes three new monologues, a new preface by Eve, and heartbreaking testimonials from young women around the country. February will also see the opening of Necessary Targets, Eve Ensler's groundbreaking new play about women and war. Necessary Targets is the story of two American women, a Park Avenue psychiatrist and a human-rights worker, who go to Bosnia to help women refugees confront their memories of war and emerge deeply changed themselves. It has been read in New York by Meryl Streep, Anjelica Huston, and Calista Flockhart and was performed in Sarajevo with Glenn Close and Marisa Tomei. It will open its New York run with a similar all-star cast.

4 out of 5 stars With humor, wit and sadness.......2007-09-30

Our small town is in a dither because our local theater group is going to put on this play. So I decided to read this book to "be informed before I judged". I'm so glad I did, this book wasn't what I thought it would be. With humor, wit and sadness, Eve takes us on a journey of pain and pleasure through our "down there parts". I don't think I will ever wear my "I love my Vulva" t-shirt. But it's nice to know that others do.

2 out of 5 stars Lost in Translation........2007-09-17

Despite years of buildup I found myself severely disappointed and slightly disgusted by The Vagina Monologues. I respect that the purpose is to (as the opening page read) empower women, make them feel equal, not to be ashamed of their sexuality and to make rape and violence against women to be known and for it to stop. That is a fantastic and admirable cause and one I support, but one I feel The Vagina Monologues does not.

I question how a work can claim to be against rape and then include a story endorsing statutory rape. The chapter entitled "The Little Coochie Snorcher That Could" explicitly details a 13 year old girl being raped repeatedly by an older woman and declares it a good experience. I don't care how the story is spun. Rape of any kind should never be endorsed.

One offensive chapter does not ruin a book for me. I was under whelmed by other material as well. Instead of the usual male copouts used against the book I blame my disappointment on a bad transition from stage to book. These stories are supposed to fill the reader with emotions. I felt nothing while reading the chapters. Worse still was chapters like "My Angry Vagina" and "The Flood" really do seem potent. I would enjoy seeing them performed at their full emotional capabilities. Unfortunately simply reading doesn't allow the reader to take away any emotion.

I'm not totally writing off The Vagina Monologues just yet. My value judgment on the book would be that it potentially has entertainment and informational value, but I just happened to encounter it in the wrong medium. A worthwhile stage production could change my view. As it now stands I find The Vagina Monologues to be an emotionless and contradicted work.

3 out of 5 stars Not the same as a live performance........2007-06-25

Eve Ensler's (1953) Vagina Monologues were written in 1996 in response to the guilt and embarrassment some women experience with their bodies and/or sexuality. This book is an adaptation of performance pieces based on Ensler's one-woman, Obie Award winning show, and includes monologues relating to the vagina as a symbol of female empowerment: "The Flood," I Was Twelve, My Mother Slapped Me," "Because He Liked to Look At It," "My Vagina Was My Village," "My Angry Vagina," "The Little Coochie Snorcher That Could," and "The Woman Who Loved to Make Vaginas Happy." Outrageous? Yes. Hilarious? Yes. Eye-opening? Yes. Not surprisingly, however, Ensler's Monologues have also sparked much criticism, including criticism from feminist critics, some of whom note that Ensler's monologues have a negative and restrictive view of sexuality and an anti-male bias (see Betty Dodson; Wendy McElroyn). As written monologues, unfortunately these pieces do not stand up to the intended delivery of a spoken performance. (Just as reading a play isn't the same as experiencing the performance, reading these monologues in a book doesn't quite offer the same experience as a live performance.) And as for theatrical monologues, Ensler's pieces lack the wit, revelation, hilarity and human truths of other monologists such as Spalding Gray, who transformed the form into art with Swimming to Cambodia, Monster in a Box, and Slippery Slope before his suicide.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-05-02

After seeing a performance of the Vagina Monologues, I was inspired. As a dedicated feminist and a person who wants to see violence against women (and everyone) stopped I was impressed and grateful for the Vagina Monologues. That has been a few months now. I recently purchased a copy of the Vagina Monologues- The V-Day edition and am re-energized and inspired all over again. It's witty, senstive, sexy, saddening, aw inspiring, thought provoking, and so much more. Reading it makes me want to go out there and help and scream. I would reccomend this book to anyone and everyone!

2 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2007-01-15

When I discovered this book in a garage sale hosted by a friend of mine, I thought, finally! I would read something that I've heard so much about ~~ who hasn't heard of this book? So this past week, I finally had a chance to pluck it off the book shelf and started reading it. It is definitely not what I expected.

I think I need to see the performance. This book just contains the words that I've heard over and over again ~~ nothing really stood out that would "change my life." Maybe it's the prude in me ~~ none of my friends and I would sit down and discuss our sex lives with one another. We definitely would never talk about our vaginas. And I definitely don't feel isolated in this respect. It's just something that I just don't need to talk about. I am not ashamed of it nor am I embarrassed. It's just not something I "need" to talk about.

This book is interesting to read but not life-changing as it would lead you to believe. Without Eve performing, the words are just empty. It definitely needs emotion and action to back them up. Now, if you want to share stories of violence against women, I am all for it ~~ but this book barely even skimmed on that subject.

It is a disappointment to read this and find out that nothing has changed. There is a reason why books should not be made on the performances ~~ it just doesn't emote very well.

5 out of 5 stars Another Kingsbury Masterpiece.......2007-09-04

Karen Kingsbury has once again created a masterpiece. A Time to Dance was both troubling and encouraging. It showed the differences between slefish love and true love. The book focused around two contrasting couples, a husband (John) and wife (Abby) struggling in their marriage and deciding that divorce is the only answer, and their daughter (Nicole) and her boyfriend (Matt) who have found true love. Kingsbury's description of John and Abby's struggle makes you feel like you are going through it. Her characters and their situations feel so real to life. When you look at John and Abby you are reminded that love, no matter how strong, can be compromised by everyday life. As you get into your daily routine it is easy to forget the people you love. The most important message found in the book is this: With God's help, anything is possible. Love that has died can be rekindled when you put God in the center of your relationships, work hard to do your part, and be willing to forgive others.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an intense read, especially those struggling in their own marriages. A Time to Dance hits the heart of the matter and delivers the best solutions to a rocky relationship.

5 out of 5 stars A Marriage That Is Stronger Than It Loos, Or Is It?.......2007-07-18

Karen Kingsbury's A Time To Dance was a book I could not put down. I kept rooting for Abby and John Reynolds to stay together, for their love to survive. Abby thinks her husband John, the high school football coach may be having an affair with a new teacher at the school, who is very manipulative and would like to help this marriage fail.

The marriage is on shaky ground even before the arrival of the provocative new teacher. They've simply grown apart over the years, each interested in their own lives and careers. Abby is actually practically having an online romance with her book editor. They decide to announce they are getting a divorce at a family meeting but their daughter beats them to it announcing first that she's getting married. So as not to cast a pall over their daughter's wedding, the couple decides to put off telling their three children about the divorce until after the wedding ceremony.

Abby is forced to look at wedding gowns and get into scrapbooking with her daughter's overly chatty mother-in-law to be. The scrapbooking and other things the family does in preparation for the wedding make Abby feel things she doesn't want to feel, such as deep bitterness toward her husband, but it also makes her wonder if the marriage can be saved. John is also wondering if the marriage is truly doomed. But they're timing is always off and when one makes a gesture of reconciliation, the other rejects it. At time the book is gut wrenching, but it is a testimonial to the strength and courage of married love.

4 out of 5 stars Hug your spouse a little tighter after reading this one.......2007-05-02

"A Time to Dance" is a moving portrayal of a marriage on the rocks--one which prompted serious reflection on my own marriage, both in deep appreciation for what I have and unnerving recognition of the ways in which I routinely fail to show that appreciation. I snuggled with my husband just a little more after finishing this book, and on that level, it scores a home run.

It was refreshing, too, to see Christian characters portrayed as human, having fallen out of the practice of their faith and fighting the same worldly emotions and battles as their secular cousins. To me, the big turnoff of much Christian fiction is that the characters are too wholesome and too perfect. That is noble and such characters make worthy role models, but it also makes them nearly impossible to relate to. Not so with John and Abby Reynolds, the seemingly perfect couple, soul mates, who have let life overtake their faith and obscure their love for one another, each blaming the other for the irreparable state of their marriage. Their sad miscommunications, bitter hostility, and deliberate avoidance felt all too real and convincing. I felt the pain of this couple's deteriorating union as they march on toward a resolution neither of them really wants, but neither knows how to avoid. For me, their story was a tearjerker. Here, too, I offer my highest kudos.

However, while Karen Kingsbury's writing style is highly engaging and accessible, I have come to find, over the course of reading several of her books, that her storylines are predictable. She uses the same devices and sappy clichés repeatedly, and while there is never any question about how John and Abby's story will end, it was all just a little too neatly and tidily wrapped up after the years of drifting apart. For that, I deduct one star. Nevertheless, this was a book I had a very hard time putting down. Definitely time well spent.

Anita Blake, vampire hunter, is now herself a hunted woman. Who put the $500,000 price on her head--a man or a monster? It's not just her own skin she needs to save; the rivalry between her werewolf boyfriend, Richard, and Marcus, the other alpha werewolf in his pack, has come to full boil. And there's always Jean-Claude, the vampire who's been waiting for just the right moment to slip inside Anita's head and heart. Don't assume anything, though--Hamilton's probably got a few more surprises in store.

Book Description

Dating both a vampire and a werewolf isn't easy. But just to complicate Anita's already messy life, someone has put a price on her head. Love cannot save her this time, so she turns to Edward, hitman extraordinaire, for help. But finding the person behind the threat won't be easy, because as both a vampire hunter and zombie reanimator, Anita has made a lot of enemies-both human and otherwise.

"The first hit man came after me at home, which should be against the rules. Then there was a second, and a third. Eventually, I found out that the word on the street was that Anita Blake, preternatural expert and vampire killer extraordinaire, was worth half a million dollars. Dead, not alive. So what's a girl to do but turn to the men in her life for help? Which in my case, means an alpha werewolf and a master vampire. With professional killers on your trail, it's not a bad idea to have as much protection as possible, human or otherwise. But I'm beginning to wonder if two monsters are better than one ... "

4 out of 5 stars Surprising..........2007-09-26

This series is the best! It is only getting better and better. I don't want to give to much away but the end of this book brings something I dind't expect. I am starting to like Jean-Claude's character a lot more as I read farther into the series..

4 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-26

Anita becomes more and more involved in the supernatural world, and it is actually spelled out here, where her relationship with the vampire and the werewolf is given, and the mutual defence pact that is undertaken.

Some of the human characters point this out, too, and her change in attitude towards vampires and others.

This book makes a beginning of a change of focus for the series, as Anita decides to give into to the whole vampire horizontal mambo mating dance.

More werewolf politics as Anita disposes of some she doesn't like, and Richard becomes the boss of the local lupines.

She has basically decided she likes the dead guy and what he can give her more than the one that is human most of the time.

After this, you will see the titles of the books becoming 'softer', presumably as an indication it is moving away from the monster stomping theme as a focus, and more towards erotica.

4 out of 5 stars Still liking this series a lot........2007-08-01

Laurell K. Hamilton, The Killing Dance (Berkley, 1997)

I keep getting farther into the are where the Anita Blake books are supposed to suck, and it keeps not happening. As with Bloody Bones, I started out The Killing Dance with some trepidation based on what I'd heard, but after fifty or so pages, I was sucked in to the point where I invented new breaks at work, stayed out for long lunches, etc., in order to keep reading. It's as compelling as any of the others in the series; Hamilton's quality of readability hasn't slipped a whit.

That said, there was one naked, pulsing flaw in this book: Harley. He's the first character ever to appear in the series who just screams "prop." Sure, some of the characters in the books have been props previously (and, as Hamilton has noted in an afterword or two, some of those props have grown into full-fledged characters over the course of a few books), but Hamilton was always a little more subtle about it. Harley, despite being an exceptionally intriguing character every time we see him, and the kind of person who has a chance to grow into something big in the series (one wonders if Hamilton meant to set him up as one of the main villains a few books later), gets to the point where it's revealed that he exists only to prove a point. (Thankfully, Hamilton gains a few notches in the right direction because Harley is meant to prove a point to the characters, not to the readers.) That's not only frustrating, it's puzzling; I can understand authors who don't do this much planning and background work with their characters throwing in cardboard cutouts now and then, but Hamilton, in a few lines, creates Harley as a rich, detailed character who hints at mysterious powers we haven't yet seen in these books. It's impossible to say why without a major spoiler, but by the end of The Killing Dance, we know for certain that Harley's potential, and his interesting powers, will not be fascinating us in subsequent volumes, and he doesn't get enough screen time here to even make him into an intriguing minor character.

I'm obviously going to reserve judgment until later in the series, but this first chink in the armor, combined with the almost uniformly awful reviews of later books in the series, does have me somewhat worried. I like these books. I don't want to stop liking them. And that's probably a better review than anything else I've said here. *** ½

5 out of 5 stars Even w/the love scene the content is still outstanding.......2007-04-09

So, with my recent obsession over this Anita Blake series I HEAR that once Anita breaks her chastity the novels start going downhill. This novel was still pretty potent. I'm glad the battle scene between Richard & Marcus wasn't "too easy". Anita's sociopathic tendancies are coming out even more. Throughout the first half of the book Anita's hormones are surging & she wants to bed Richard. She also seems willing to embrace Richard's beast but he refuses. They go through the argument of Richard beating (and the support of the lack thereof) & killing Marcus. Then it becomes a group argument. Then Richard convinces Anita he finally agrees to kill him. The big tough werewolf gives in to peer pressure (AND ABOUT TIME)! Hitmen are after Anita. Edward & a his buddy Harley come in for back-up. Good ol' Edward is a loyal friend after all. Anita allows go into public w/Jean-Claude for the opening of his Dance club, Danse Macabre. They never get to dance as she promised. She gets on national TV, therefore she's aware her father will eventually find out about her dating a vamp. She finds out about the national hearing after Dolph tries to play father figure. I actually liked that part of the book.

*spoiler* So Richard shape-shifts while he's on top of Anita & she totally freaks out. Not a successful embrase of his beast after all, huh? Seeing him eat Marcus didn't help either so she runs into the arms JC instead. Ok, so I enjoyed the bathtub love scene. Which would I have chosen between the 2 of them? Hmmm...Richard hunting/eating/killing & shape-shifting once a month or JC feeding on blood nightly for survival? It's both cannibalism anyway. As the spoilers say, she's eventually gonna bed 'em both anyway. *giggle* I would have done the same. **evil laugh** Yes, I'm still bias & I still enjoyed this novel. It hasn't gone downhill for me yet.

5 out of 5 stars Ghost Dancing Sacred Medicine and the Art of JD Challenger.......2001-04-27

Descriptive words of Ghost Dancing, joined with the timeless wisdom contained in the words of Native America. Couple this with the paintings of JD Challenger and you have an opportunity to not read about but really feel. This is not a book just narrating the past but speaks volumes to the future. This book called to me from the library shelf and I have ordered to place in a prominent place on my shelf. This is a book to share with others and come back to often.

5 out of 5 stars Art for the Soul.......1999-10-07

JD challengers work was the first original art that I have purchased. When I saw his work in a gallery in Santa Fe, I was mesmorized by the character of his subjects. Ghost Dancing provides a good overview of many of his prints that are available.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Visual Experience.......1999-02-28

The text of this book is extremely informative on the Ghost Dance Religion of Native Americans. It covers the origins of the religion, its climax and the results thereof. Adding to this educational context is the Beautifully compelling work of artist JD Challenger. His riviting paintings jump from the pages virtually reaching out from the book and pulling you in. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about Native Americans and most assuredly to anyone who loves art that emits emtional impact. I constantly go back to this book as a source of inspiration and to gain understanding of Native American's plight.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reproduction of JD's paintings........1998-07-10

The book is of the finest quality in printing and binding. The content is very educational and the reproductrion of JD's paintings is superb.

5 out of 5 stars Great Monologue Book.......2006-03-10

I love the reference chart in the back. It's organized by sex, then age, then emotion portrayed. It also gives a quick description of each character, so you don't have to read through all of the monologues. Some great choices, too! Great picks from little-known dramas as well as popular ones.

2 out of 5 stars Not Spectacular.......2006-02-17

Good monologues are hard to come by. Don't waste your time with this one.

4 out of 5 stars A great resource for student and recently graduated actors.......2005-08-16

this book is well organized and has a plethera of wonderful monologues from actual plays. It is not just a monolgue book but a reference to find awesome plays as well!

5 out of 5 stars Useful and entertaining collection.......2005-07-21

Some wonderful contemporary monologues! Well-chosen and edited. Great source material for auditions or just developing acting skills. I'll be using one for an audition this week!

3 out of 5 stars Great Selection.......2004-11-15

This book is great for acting students. I've used several of the monologues from this book with great success. There are some classics as well as some more obscure monologues. I would recommend adding this book to your collection of monologues or to use in the classroom for students who are having trouble finding material.

"Come to me." The haunting voice of Scottish laird James McLeod summons writer Elizabeth Smith through time to 1311 Scotland. James forbids women at his keep. So he is rather surprised when Elizabeth is deposited in his care, though care isn't what he gives her when they first meet. Lynn Kurland excited readers with her memorable debut novel, Stardust of Yesterday, and her talents shine through again in this delightful time-travel tale of adventure and love.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lynn Kurland is exceptional.......2007-01-17

I agree with all of the 5 star reviews. Even though it is a "closed door" type of romance, you feel all the love and pain of the characters. It is a wonderful book that you just can't put down.

5 out of 5 stars Where the MacLeod tales begin..........2006-10-21

This is Jamie's story... James MacLeod, feared highland laird, completely oblivious to the fact that he's going to end up falling in love with not only a 20th century woman, but also with time traveling! This is how it all began...

And it's Elizabeth's story... how she manages to survive through a surprise landing in the Middle Ages and find the tenderness that's hiding inside a very grumpy highland laird. After all... men are men, no matter the century!

I like the fact that Lynn Kurland's characters have the right amount of the "wow factor" (as in beauty or power or skill)... while still being realistic human beings. Her character development is excellant and her characters come alive in such a wonderful way that it's no wonder that many of the characters she introduced in this book have since gotten their own stories!

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Lot..........2006-02-01

The author made this book great...and she was even a little bold with love scenes, which are usually nonexistent in her books. James was both wonderful and a cad, but loveable. His son Jesse was a fabulous young man. And Elizabeth was simply magnificant and lovely and sweet. A grand tale.

5 out of 5 stars Loved It!!!.......2006-01-06

Dance Through Time was my own personal time portal to a world that one can only dream of. I put myself in Elizibeth's postion and as if I was there in the past and in love. The mix of mondern day luxuries and the Scottish hardships was unflawed. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a getaway to a world of humor, love , and passion.

5 out of 5 stars A Dance Through Time.......2005-10-30

A Dance Through Time was a wonderful, fast read that I thoroughly enjoyed. Elizabeth Smith is an author who lives in New York who awakes from a dream of a mysterious Scottish man. After she decides to transform her dream into a romance novel and does her research on Scotland's history, she takes a walk to a park, falls asleep, and finds herself in Medieval Scotland. Soon she finds herself facing the man from her dream in person. Now she's torn in the choice between going home, to the year 1996, or staying with the man she loves.

I enjoyed this book as a hopeless romantic, and also as a romance-lover and book-lover. What was nice about Lynn Kurland's novel was that you are guaranteed suspense and a happy ending. A Dance Through Time is definitely a feel-good story that is very difficult to put down.
