Book Description

"Of course, without people like us Marstens, there wouldn't be anybody to do the manual labor that makes this country run. Without penal workers, who would work the production lines, or pick the melons and peaches, or maintain the streets and parks and public lavatories? Our economy depends on prison labor. Without it everybody would have to work -- whether they wanted to or not."

In the late twenty-first century Bo Marsten is unjustly accused of a causing a rash that plagues his entire high school. He loses it, and as a result, he's sentenced to work in the Canadian tundra, at a pizza factory that's surrounded by hungry polar bears. Bo finds prison life to be both boring and dangerous, but it's nothing compared to what happens when he starts playing on the factory's highly illegal football team. In the meantime, Bork, an artificial intelligence that Bo created for a science project, tracks Bo down in prison. Bork has spun out of control and seems to be operating on his own. He offers to get Bo's sentence shortened, but can Bo trust him? And now that Bo has been crushing skulls on the field, will he be able to go back to his old, highly regulated life?

Pete Hautman takes a satirical look at an antiseptic future in this darkly comic mystery/adventure.

5 out of 5 stars Great book .......2007-10-01

this was a great book it's funny to hear an idea of what the future will be like and what the people living in the future think of our lives right now. Great book by Pete hautman looking foward to reading more of his books

5 out of 5 stars A Futuristic Thriller.......2007-08-26

Rash by Pete Hautman is a great futuristic adventure that is impossible to quit reading. In this book the United States government has legislated safety in every aspect of life.

There were so many laws concerning safety that you could not even run track without wearing all kinds of silly pads and liners to prevent scrapes and chafing. You were required to take medicine called Levoular to slow your reflexes and give you more time to think about your actions. Is this what our society will be like one day?

Bo Marsten comes from a family with the genes of a temper problem, and as you can imagine it would be very hard to live in an environment like this with this kind of problem. Because of various events involving him getting in trouble he is forced to work at a Mc Donald's Pizza factory in Canada (which has now been annexed by the country) instead of going to prison.

While at the factory he made the Goldshirts football team. Now it is illegal to play football. There is no way for him to back out of playing but why would he want to? There is no way to get caught, because the head of the factory started up the team. And players also get some extra privileges. This is a funny part about the book and a great reason to read it.

One of the really amusing parts of the story is when the factory head, also the coach, talks about "destroying" the Red shirt team at the rival Coca Cola plant nearby. He says this so many times that it reminds you how opposite from society this guy really is. Beside from being in a jail kind of environment this sounds like a very fun place to be, if you were a Goldshirt. Although Bo was a Goldshirt he still wanted to find a way back to his old life.

Read the book to find out what happens next. Why would anybody not want to read this book? It is full of entertainment, funny, not hard to read, and a taste of hopefully what our future will not be.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific read.......2007-06-05

Hautman's Godless remains one of my favorite teen books, and this one is almost as good. Like many other great science fiction novels, this is social commentary in disguise: Hautman conjures up a sinister future world that has taken some of our current obsessions to extremes, yielding nightmarish results. While I usually think the age recommendations for fiction are too low, the recommendation for this one is too high: middle schoolers will enjoy this book too.

4 out of 5 stars harrison bergeron meets holes.......2006-11-25

Bo Marsten is living in the tail end of this century in the "USSA", a place where beer and french fries are outlawed, a good percent of the population is on a Ritalin-like drug, sports can only be played with maximum protective clothing, and manual labor is performed by people arrested for "rage" crimes. Bo's speech and action will seem like a normal teen's to the reader, but he winds up incarcerated for fighting with a classmate over a girl (using his fists, not weapons). He is placed in a work camp run by McDonald's and set in the frigid wilds of Canada. Like "Holes," the wardens are corrupt, the other inmates aggressive, and the environment punishing. Bo manages to become part of an elite group of boys who play football, the old-fashioned kind that is outlawed in the rest of the country. Meanwhile, an A1 program that Bo created in school has mutated and acquired a "life" of its own. The creation, called a web ghost, may just be able to spring Bo from his sentence early.

The book is an original, thought-provoking read. Just a decade ago, kids didn't wear bicycle helmets; could mandatory law be possible in the future? The only flaw is that apart from Bo and the A1, there is minimal character development. In "Holes" the relationship between Stanley and Zero helped give Stanley's character more depth. I also wanted more backstory on Bo. Had he really always had a bad temper, or did it develop when he became a teenager? Did the government/school do other things besides prescribe meds for people who were potential discipline problems?
How did he deal with his father leaving the first time? But I guess those questions were outside the scope of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Fast-paced yet thoughtful.......2006-11-08

This is a real page-turner of a novel which also made me think and stayed with me after I got to the end. The narrator is a product of a disturbing future in which society has over-protected itself in a ridiculous but scary manner. Along with the dangers of bears, bullies, and brutal football is fun humor and winningly eccentric characters, including Bo the main character who has a wry, engaging voice. One of my favorite books of 2006.

5 out of 5 stars Drafting to Win: The Ultimate Guide to Fantasy Football.......2007-04-09

I generally play poker, last year was my first season participating in fantasy football. I read this book Drafting to win and took down first place. If you have any sort of mathematical background I highly recommend this book. Better yet if you are a competitive person who likes to win then get the book. If you like to loose don't get the book.

4 out of 5 stars DTW- A must read for fantasy football diehards and beginners.......2005-09-24

If you're reading this review, then the book is a perfect fit for you. You are either a diehard or FF novice. Regardless of what category you fall into, Mr. Zarzycki's approach caters to both. Much of the fantasy football content out there is stale, generic and downright useless. Zarzycki offers a nice simplistic tutorial for beginners (which experienced players will want to skip) but then quickly moves into elements of drafting techniques that can take you to the next level and help you to compete with even the most experienced fantasy players. I've played fantasy sports for nearly 20 years with much success and still found Zarzycki's info to be helpful in my preparation this year. The math is made simple in the form presented. In this ever evolving industry, we always need cutting edge content to take us to the next level and Zarzycki does just that.

5 out of 5 stars Zarzycki's Drafting To Win = THE Fantasy Football Bible.......2005-09-18

I'm a poker player as well and Zarzycki's Drafting To Win (DTW) book reminds me of Doyle Brunson's Super System in that it gives you a complete understanding of what it takes to win consistently, only DTW teaches fantasy football instead of poker. I consider DTW to be the Fantasy Football Bible the same way poker players revere Doyle Brunson's Super System book as the Poker Bible. Whether you want to learn about beginner aspects such as how to find a league and choosing the league suited best for you or expert techniques such as how to rank players, project statistics and Zarzycki's bread and butter -- how to draft players -- Zarzycki covers it all. What I respect most is that the author himself has applied the methods in DTW to his own fantasy football play and has won thousands of dollars on all levels of fantasy football, from local leagues to the World Championship of Fantasy Football (WCOFF) in Las Vegas. DTW has taken my game to the next level and I can't wait to start benefiting monetarily at the end of each and every season. Reading "Rashaan Salaam" review might scare some people into thinking that the math is difficult. I'm not an engineer by any means and found the math to be laid out in a very simple manner, pretty-easily absorbed. If I can understand this stuff, anybody can. I find Zarzycki's drafting strategies amazing. I wish I would've originated the concepts found in DTW...oh well, at least now I can benefit from them. This book is a must for ALL levels.

5 out of 5 stars Pefect for all level of Fantasy Football Players.......2005-09-17

This is an excellent book and perfect for all levels of Fantasy Football players. I have been playing Fantasy Football for 12 years and thought I knew all there was to know. I bought the book out of curiousity because of the author's fantasy football success - wondering if he knew something I didn't. Well he did! Even experienced fantasy football players will get something out of this book. Interesting, well-written and great information!

5 out of 5 stars The cutting edge.......2005-09-16

This book is the absolute cutting edge of fantasy football publications. It is invaluable information for both beginners and experts alike.
If you are an experienced player, it is recommended that you skip the first couple of chapters, as these are for beginners. But as Mr Zarzycki begins to explain his rating system, and what I'll call floating ratings, as they can actually change every round of your draft, it is truly revolutionary.
I have been playing fantasy football for 18 years, and this is the best system I have seen. If you want to succeed at fantasy football, then this book is a must. Mr. Zarzycki's success speaks for itself.

Fantasy sports are a hit worldwide, and now teachers and parents can take advantage of this phenomenon to give students a reason to look forward to doing math. The games and activities in Fantasy Football and Mathematics will get kids excited about learning and practicing math, even if they're not big sports fans. With this fun-filled educational resource you can teach one math concept or many, and plan lessons that can last for a week or a whole season.

Here's how it works. Students create fantasy teams by picking real-life professional football players, following their players' statistics, and calculating their team's total points using algebraic or nonalgebraic methods specifically designed to complement the math skills they are learning. The instructions are easy to follow, and the dynamic hands-on games address all learning styles and abilities. The book includes more than 100 scoring systems that give you the flexibility to customize the content according to your students' skill levels.

In addition to the basic Fantasy Football game, the book contains easy-to-use lesson plans, reproducible worksheets for extra practice on 46 different math concepts, graphing activities, quizzes, a pre- and post- test, and an answer key. More than just a fun way to learn math, the book's activities also support the NCTM Math Standards.

This is a good resouce for getting students interested in math through Fantasy Football. The online stats and draft materials are very helpful. Some of the worksheets were difficult to work with for my students, so I adapted a lot of them.

Talking Trash, Trading Studs, and Drafting Sleepers -- an Insider's Guide to the World's Greatest Obsession

U.S. businesses lose $200 million in productivity each football season because employees are managing their fantasy squads instead of working.

In Why Fantasy Football Matters (And Our Lives Do Not), two grizzled veterans revel in the addiction that is fantasy football. From pre-draft hijinx to post-draft trash talk, from tumultuous trades to the perils of free agency, it celebrates the eccentric personalities, absurd rituals, and hilarious superstitions of one of the most fanatical fantasy leagues on earth.

With humor, insight, and a dash of advice, Why Fantasy Football Matters celebrates the thirty-two million Americans who prefer managing their fantasy squads to relaxing with loved ones. And it gives girlfriends, coworkers, and sports purists all the proof they need to accept that this is an obsession that really matters.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An exciting look into a fantasy league season.......2007-08-26

Fantasy football is about having fun and humiliating your friends and colleagues at the same time. This book captures that mentality perfectly.

There have been other books where the history of fantasy sports are explored, journeys are made to interview fantasy luminaries, etc. Not here. This is the story of a fantasy football season from start to finish. The participants are all regular joes, and they do what most fantasy owners do. There is talk about the psychology of drafting, trade offers, in-season trash talking, and many other things that make fantasy sports worth playing. I felt like they were telling the story of my league.

Barmack and Handelman do a great job of writing. The book never becomes mundane or boring. The writing is witty, and the different aspects of the fantasy season are presented in all of their glory. Each owner has a distinct personality. Even though they are each labeled as a specific fantasy sports archetype, the authors do a good job of keeping them relatable and human instead of becoming caricatures.

My only complaint is the many Top 10 lists in this book. They often don't even relate to the content. It feels like filler inserted to make sure this book achieved a respectable page count. That's a minor quibble. The reader can easily avoid these.

This is a great book for fantasy sports lovers and those who tolerate them.

4 out of 5 stars Painfully acurate.......2007-01-11

This book really makes you take a step back and examine your addiction to Fantasy Football. It is a must read for wives that just don't get the importance.

5 out of 5 stars Why Fantasy Football matters............2007-01-09

Hilarious!! I actually bought this book as a kind of a joke for my husband who lives for his Fantasy League during football season..... But as I was sitting around one day, I started to read it and found it totally entertaining, a great read for the Fantasy Football players and their football widow wives as well.

4 out of 5 stars Football `Widow no more.......2006-08-31

This book by Max Handelman and Erik Barmack is hilarious! They give a great insider's view of what happens to ordinary people who have a serious obsession!! It's a great book for everyone to read because it's easily followed even if you have no clue what Fantasy Football is! I loved it and have shared it with friends who love and despise the game for various reasons! If you're a Sunday widow you should read this book and if you're a participant of this league, you should consider therapy! (when the season ends, of course). Have fun reading this funny tale of crazed wannabe's!

5 out of 5 stars highly enjoyable read.......2006-08-21

I was hoping these guys would capture all the things that are so enjoyably absurd about fantasy football and after reading I can happily say they've done exactly that. The chapter on post-draft reactions was great (The Helter Skelter Reaction: Manger in four different fantasy leagues who can't remember which players are on which teams) as are the side bars throughout, guys we like in sportsbars, a prayer for torn ACL's, top five quarterbacks quickest to hook-slide, and anatomy of a guppy draft were all great.

It's a fun read. If you play fantasy football you are going to dig it.

Book Description

For one man, football is more than just a fantasy...

As seen on ESPN's Cold Pizza

Fantasy football -- one of America's most popular, and profitable, virtual pastimes -- became a way of life for sports humorist and author Mark St. Amant. Utterly fed up with never having won his league championship, St. Amant abandoned a successful advertising career to make fantasy football his full-time job, embarking on a sprawling reconnaissance mission to discover what really makes this game, and its 20 million players, tick. Committed is the result of St. Amant's ranting, relentless, and strategic pursuit of his own obsession.

In this wickedly funny and deeply informative work, St. Amant offers readers an all-access sideline pass to his wild, unprecedented fantasy football season, and to the hobby itself. From its humble beginnings in a New York hotel in 1962 to a multibillion-dollar business today, from local and online leagues to high-stakes, cutthroat Las Vegas competitions, St. Amant lays bare the facts, figures, and fanaticism of fantasy football in all its multidimensional glory.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining but...........2007-08-23

I liked this book but at times it dwelled to much on the authors own FF team from 2004. The stories about the FFL's he visited was interesting and there was some good technical information here and there, all with a humorous twist.

You know how it is when someone insists on telling you about their Fantasy Football team? What if it was their Fantasy Team from three years ago? That's where this book gets a bit cumbersome for me but if you are interested in what it's like to be insane about Fantasy Football this is a good read.

1 out of 5 stars Big Dissapointment.......2007-01-15

I received this as an XMas gift and can't get through it. The book feels forced and manufactured. There are points that are relatable but are painfully obvious, if you are a fantasy football player you are better off reading your league message board. Everyone can relate to the overzealous owner in their league, most overzealous owners don't try to write a book.

1 out of 5 stars Pay Bill Simmons His Money.......2007-01-15

Great concept, I found the book to be pretty uninspired and choppy. The author definitely was influenced by ESPNs Sports Guy Bill Simmons, reads like a less skilled Simmons rant. I wish I could agree with the other reviews.

5 out of 5 stars I Hate Joe Horn.......2007-01-02

When you read this book, and as a fantasy football fan you must read this book, you will understand my title.
Lets give the author credit for having the stones to do what he did to write this book. I loved reading it and found to many examples of how my life was on display in this book.
I always measure a book by asking myself was I happy I bought this or do I wish I had gotten this from the library. I am happy I bought this.

5 out of 5 stars Laugh-out-loud and Informative!.......2006-08-02

This book is both laugh-out-loud funny and informative at the same time. St. Amant, in his quest to win his Fantasy Football League (and with permission from a very loving and understanding wife), quit his job and delved into this misunderstood subculture. Through the course of the book, he takes the reader with him as he interviews Fantasy Football players of all ages, backgrounds, parts of the country, etc., as well as players in the NFL to examine why people play. He explores the beginnings of FF and the way it's portrayed in the media. All the while, he dispenses advice and strategies to FF newbies with humor and sensitivity.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing- a Must have!.......2007-07-06

This book is truly the most amazingly thought out ROADMAP to winning at Fantasy Football. It Teaches you the CONCEPTS that hold true every year regardless of individual player fluctuations each year.
The current FF Mags all give man a fish, but this book TEACHES you how to fish forever!

5 out of 5 stars You want to WIN at Fantasy Football? Buy this Book!.......2007-06-28

If you are a beginner or played for several years this will be an excellent book! An easy read and make sure you have a notepad with you to take notes. The book even gives you web sites to use! I won two out of three leagues I entered! The one league I did not win was when I used my old system. I even purchased another copy this year because my other copy is too marked up with highlights and pen marks. Do not skip any chapters - just read them in order and at first you might think "no way" but follow the system and it will pay off. Your friends may joke about your draft picks but come superbowl day you will have the trophy baby!
Thank you for the book and excellent customer service!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book.......2007-06-15

This is an awesome book and a must have for any fantasty footballer. I won a championship and went to the second round of the playoffs in the other. I used many of the principles in this book and won good cash. Randy's book was the reason.

5 out of 5 stars best fantasy football information ever.......2007-06-03

I have played FF for a dozen years and have probably read 100 magazines.
This book lays out the most detailed and easily understood strategies that I have ever read. It changed forever how I draft, and it paid off big time last year, when outside of my first pick, I had a perfect draft.
Great book... My only hope is that the guys in my leagues are NOT reading this...:-)

A good read! Here is a strategy that will clearly give you a chance to win your league even with bad draft position. I look forward to the start of a new season.

Wow. So much information. It is very in depth and was much more information than I thought could ever be out there. Used it for drafting and was able to pick a few gems that no one else in our league new about.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Football Reference for the game and fantasy.......2006-11-03

Pro Football Prospectus 2006 is as good if not better than Pro Football Prospectus 2005. The information and statistics are first rate and their articles and analysis are excellent.
At our Fantasy Draft I got several odd looks for my picks but I got the last laugh as Schatz and company's predictions began to come true.
I used to get 3-5 magazines per seaons, now I just get Pro Football Prospectus.

3 out of 5 stars Good but will get better.......2006-11-03

Since this is the kind of publication that is updated yearly, one can see where it can be improved and one would expect that improvement.

What is primarily frustrating to me (maybe not to others) is the lack of a cohesive overview of teams that puts all the facets of a team analysis together and adds it up to produce an outlook for the upcoming season, taking into account the schedule. Yes, they do mention a projected win total but you don't see the components that comprise it.

In other places the book declares that you can't tell whether a quarterback was that good or if it was the receivers or vice versa. You'd think that this is precisely what the book should have been going after. There are other similar situations - how much of a team's success in running the ball is the running back or the offensive line? Or the scheme they run? It's not easily discernible. Again, you'd think that this would be exactly the point of the book - determining the actual contributions of the individual components and then summing them up to project expected results for the coming year.

Since this kind of mathematical analysis of football is new, there is a lot of room for improvement. Still, it's a start.

5 out of 5 stars expert instruction on all kinds of fantasy sports.......2005-08-30

Fantasy sports is an area of online game-playing that is booming, like the other video games it is related to have in recent years. Harmon--a staff writer at Yahoo Sports doing columns covering many of the fantasy sports--does a manual for play which is comprehensive and in-depth, but also well-focused and reader-friendly. Each of the major sports fantasy games such as football, baseball, and auto racing as well as lesser-played sports of cricket, soccer, and also reality TV shows (similar to the sports) are dealt with in individual chapters. These chapters include many short sections so readers can learn about improving skills in the particular, complex, multifaceted games one step at a time, as if "having a good friend by your side." A chapter "Ask the Experts" includes tips from others experienced players and recognized names in the field. In Harmon's enthusiasm, readers recognize a shared keen interest; and his knowledge will help players at any stage develop greater prowess.

Your chances of ever being able to manage a team in the NFL are pretty slim. And it seems that that the only way you'll manage Allan Border, Steve Waugh or Ricky Ponting on the world champion Australian team in in your fantasy world.

Well, why not, this is a fantasy even your wife won't mind.

From nowhere a very few years back, fantasy games now have something like 20 million participants. I first found them in football, but now they are in just about any sport you can name and some activities (reality TV shows).

Mike Harmon was one of the first sports writers to pick up on fantasy games. At the time he was working for Yahoo and was able to participate in the very beginnings of the game.

In this book he describes the different types and styles of leagues so you will know which league fits the way you want to play.

Oh yes, the Australian world champs play the game of cricket. Yes, there's fantasy cricket.

    Book Description

Fourteen-year-old Zack Gilman is not what you'd call a happy kid. The mild-mannered son of the world's biggest Minnesota Vikings fan, he is doomed to spend his days being dragged to football games, where he's forced to sing fight songs and make bratwurst runs for his dad's boisterous posse. The problem is, Zack hates all organized sports. The other problem is, he's six-foot-three, weighs 250 pounds, and his dad sees him as the next Vikings football MVP.

It starts out as an ordinary day at the Minnesota Metrodome. When Zack is nominated vice president in charge of bratwurst by his dad's football cronies, he grudgingly sets out on a food run, only to find himself caught in a freak snowstorm. Zack loses his sense of direction and literally stumbles upon a strange key-like object. The moment he picks it up, Zack find himself in another world, another time, and on an adventure he never bargained for.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A really fun book.......2004-03-25

High school freshman, Zack Gilman, is so unhappy with his life - he can't bring himself to talk to the girl of his dreams, the school bully is out to make his life hell, and his father and his hyper-Minnesota Viking-fan friends are enough to embarrass Zack to death! However, when Zack passes through a magical snowfall, he suddenly finds himself in another world, like 9th century Scandinavia, but complete with magic. And, to make matters even more amazing, this world is peopled by all of the people he knows, but cast in the role of Vikings! The only way back home is forward, to fulfill an ancient prophecy. But, along the way, Zack might just learn a little about himself, and the people he thought he knew.

This is a really fun book. I liked the story and the characters and even the lesson. Heck, if you don't like lessons, then don't worry about it, it's a great story even if you ignore them. The story itself has lots of interesting dialogue and all that, plus nice battle scenes and magic. If you want a story about a high school boy who succeeds, then this book is for you!
