Maximize the Moment is a biblically-based self-help book by T.D. Jakes, a leading African-American pastor, motivational speaker, and the author of The Lady, Her Lover, and Her Lord. Jakes begins the book with a powerful reminder of the frailty of life, the reason that "we should maximize and prioritize our time and esteem it as precious." In a straightforward, humble style, Jakes teaches readers to reach their God-given potential in family, work, and spiritual life. His advice, in short, is to think of every moment as an opportunity for decision, and then to make decisions that are always faithful and constructive. The passages advocating freedom from fear-filled and destructive relationships are especially powerful, and well-crafted to be useful for both men and women. Maximize the Moment also has a wealth of sayings that stick in the brain without the cloying sentiment that often colors self-help books. "The wisest thing we can do," Jakes writes, "is minimize the liabilities, plan for the unexpected, enjoy the ecstasies, endure the disappointments, and then face the inevitable."
Book Description
Using ageless biblical principles, Bishop T.D. Jakes teaches that every moment of every day, God provides all we need to achieve success. In Maximize the Moment, he explains how to release ourselves from damaging relationships and debilitating fears, how to face and conquer obstacles that may stand in our path to success, and how to move beyond our painful pasts.
"His stories are thought provoking, his guidelines are easy to follow and his questions allow the reader to align the course of his or her life to the biblical precepts presented in the book." (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)

Big man, big heart, big message.......2005-08-05
The fact T. D. Jakes is a successful businessman, as well as a successful evangelist and pastor, makes "Maximize the Moment" stand apart from many other books about Christian living. It's a double header kind of book, worth the time because of the Christian message and equally worth the time for the success-in-business-and-life message. Give it as a gift to anybody because there's a bucketful of good information in these pages for all of life.
Outstanding!.......2004-10-10
I have always admired this man, T.D. Jakes. I feel his teaching is superb and his insights of the Word of God excellent. In this book, I was not disappointed in the knowledge he shared.
In this work, he teaches how to overcome damaging effects from relationships, fears and many other obstacles that life has put in our path. He teaches the Biblical principles and how we can turn around hurtful life experiences and use them to our advantage. I found the information he shares very useful and informative, written in a clear, easy to understand manner.
This is a great book that you will turn to time and time again for encouragement and wisdom. Recommended!

MAXIMIZE THE MOMENT.......2004-02-02
ON THE SHELF NEXT TO THE BIBLE. EVERYONE NEEDS TO READ THIS BOOK. IT'S GREAT.
Book Description
This timely compilation features 365 simple actions people can take to change the world, one day - or even five minutes - at a time. Each suggested action, in 16 "helping" categories, can be started and finished in a day or less, and none requires a cash donation. Readers may choose to accomplish a different altruistic step each day of the year, activate the same tool every day, or take actions that address a personally favored issue, such as animal welfare, or the pursuit of peace. Possibilities for compassionate service include acting as driver for a battered women's shelter, planting trees or a garden at a schoolyard, recycling running shoes into a playground surface, taking a day off from consumerism, aiding low-income students in finding grants and scholarships, helping unemployed workers put together resumes, and much more.

This Book Helped Me Help Others.......2006-05-02
"The Difference a Day Makes" is a terrific book. Karen has done a great job in communicating the importance of giving back every day. There were several new ways to give that I learned through reading this book. It is easy to read, understand and implement in your daily life. I would recommend it to anyone that wants to make a difference (and that should be everyone).
Idealism In Action.......2005-12-15
This is a nice book. It shows how simple everyday deeds can have a positive impact upon the world. Too often people who genuinely want to do something good for society honestly don't know how to go about achieving anything. This book gives great suggestions and points would-be philanthropists in the right direction.
The Difference... Helps You Make A Big Difference!.......2005-04-01
What a refreshing read - both thought provoking and resourceful, In today's "information overload" society, it's nice to have a handy resource to help me accomplish many of my personal volunteer goals without it being so much work. In fact, I'm going to buy copies for all my nieces and nephews as they are all charged with doing community service projects and, in my opinion, need to experience that "giving back," among other things, makes you feel good about yourself!
A kind of recipe collection for doing good.......2005-03-11
For some, compassionate feelings can overwhelm spare time and energy: readers with such a problem should consider The Difference a Day Makes : 365 Ways to Change Your World in Just 24 Hours a kind of recipe collection for doing good. Turn good intentions into powerful action with a guide which provides vast lists of good things which can be done in a few simple minutes or hours; from providing a resource list for a neighborhood to encouraging workplace and home use of the arts, and assisting an elder who has a pet.
Being the Difference..........2005-02-04
If, like me, you've been feeling that sending a check somehow isn't `enough', this is The resource that makes doing `more' easy.
If you're involved with inventing or organizing `service projects', it's a MUST. Definitely the handiest resource for getting your/ their imagination going anyone could possibly wish for.
And if you want to start making a difference before you even get the book, add copies for your local library and scout troops to your order. It's that great.

Examples of NLP.......2002-08-20
This was a great book. I enjoyed every page of it. It brought together ideas I have read and a made them more practical for me. I highly recommend this book if you want to understand how to use NLP is some of the possible ways.
One of the KEY NLP texts.......2002-05-01
You could say that this is a book in six chapters, plus an introduction and one appendix - the former is taken of an interview with Bandler in 1990, the latter covers the NLP "Milton Model" in some depth.
Excited?
You would be if you knew what is in those six chapters!
According to the back cover blurb (taken from the Introduction):
"*Magic in Action* shows the ways in which I use humour and speed to work with clients. It gives the layman an idea of what an NLP session should be like."
Basically this is a set of trancescripts (pun intended) of Richard Bandler doing brief therapy the NLP way. They cover topics such as a rather unusual form of agoraphobia, fear of authority figures, weight loss, changing limiting beliefs, etc.
More than that, however, they show Bandler using many of the core NLP techniques to facilitate lasting changes, typically in less than 30 minutes.
An additional feature of the first three sessions is that they are taken from a project at Marshall University, West Virginia, and in two cases include a brief follow-up interview that took place about 8 months after the therapy session.
(Only two, because in one case Richard and his client went straight out and demonstrated that the client's agoraphobia had already completely disappeared.)
As the previous reviewer has said, this is a book that will bear, indeed requires, several readings to get the most out of it. Bandler himself (or was it the unnamed editor?) recommends that, after having read the whole book, you start again, annotating each transcript in the same way that the final chapter has already been analysed, to better understand how Bandler has used various linguistic patterns to achieve his results.
Seems like a pretty good idea to me.
The book gives some interesting insights into the attitude, motivation and practice of the originator of NLP. At the same time, though Bandler certainly isn't prepared to spoonfeed his readers, it is as good a teaching tool as any book could ever be.
If you're serious about NLP, this book is a definite 'must read'.
The Introduction is worth the price of admission!.......1998-03-02
This is an excellent book for anyone wanting an inside view of a master utilizing NLP(tm) in action. These are actual working transcripts of Richard Bandler the co-founder of the NLP(tm)technology doing work with patients. Within the pages you'll encounter him literally performing magic in terms of creating transformational change with private clients. This book is unlike others by either Bandler or Grinder (the other co-founder of NLP(tm). All of the other books available by these authors are taken either from training transcripts or written as training manuals, in this one the transcripts are from one to one sessions with Richard himself. These transcripts are packed with information. You'll find him utilizing hypnosis, reframing, anchoring, and all the other NLP(tm)techniques you've heard of while continually pacing and leading the client he's addressing. As Richard suggests in the introduction you could re-read this book for each of these patterns and come away with a deeper, fuller and richer appreciation of the model each time you do. In a way you could almost learn to do NLP(tm) from this book alone, however this is not what either I or Richard would recommend. As Bandler writes in the introdution to this edition, NLP(tm) is an experiential model and the way to really "get it" is to work with someone who is really skilled in its application. Within this same introduction Richard uncovers his own thinking about the model he calls NLP(tm) better than any other place that I've read. This description alone is worth the price of the book if what's offered is really assimilated. I would of given it a 10 however there are some sections within it that really bog down and could have been improved with better editing ... then again ... What I recommend is that if your interested in the direct applicaton of NLP(tm) as a transformation technology go ahead buy it, read it and enjoy it!

Outstanding.......2007-02-21
Douglas Wood is a breath a fresh air in our consumeristic world. He offers children a view of life that treasures the simple pleasures, and appreicate each moment life has to offer. A real find for children - AND adults.
A wonderful book!.......2004-03-21
A Quiet Place is a wonderful book to help kids realize that it is good for them to be quiet and think. With all the noise they experience during the day and their constant activities (including music, television, computers, electronic toys, etc.), it is so important for them to be able to think in quiet and daydream. This book gives wonderful examples of the different places a boy goes in his thoughts, and it shows him imagining himself to be different people or animals. For example, when walking on the beach he becomes an explorer discovering a lost continent, when laying in the snow he's a sleeping polar bear, when climbing a hill he becomes a mountain climber on top of the world, when visiting a museum he's an artist admiring his own masterpiece. It is extremely well written and captivating, and the illustrations are beautiful. I came upon this book at the library and am now on-line to order it for my 6 and 4 year old boys (who loved it).
Timely and Moving.......2002-03-19
This story beautifully balances a child's inner self-esteem with a wonderful sense of adventure. The young boy in the book looks for "a quiet place" to escape from the intesity of the outside world. My son and I have read it every night for the last week, just before bed. Wonderful writing, truly breathtaking illustrations. The author's earlier work, GRANDAD'S PRAYER'S OF THE EARTH, is one of our favorites.

The Law of Mind in Action.......2006-07-16
This timeless work explains the non-denominational spiritual laws you can use to create positive change in your life.
Dr Fenwicke Lindsay Holmes (1883-1973), author of over 50 books of psychology, philosophy, religion, nutrition, poetry and science fiction, was both a Congregationalist minister and a minister of Divine Science. He originally called his process of spiritual discovery, "The Science of the Soul," and worked together with his brother Ernest Holmes, who founded the Religious Science movement. Known as a latter-day Emerson, Dr. Holmes's work was deeply influenced by his contemporaries P. D. Oupensky and Albert Einstein. The Law of the Mind in Action was the first non-denominational metaphysical textbook ever published in the United States.

Simple steps to a fulfilling life........2007-01-19
I purchased this book as a gift to a co-worker who is not living a life that is filled with wonder and excitement, and ended up reading it before I gave it to her. I decided to follow the few simple steps and these steps have created a new awareness that keeps me focused. One does not have to read a 500 hundred page self help book to be able to make changes in one's life. This book gets right to the heart of what can make our lives outstanding and bring us alot of joy. The author admits to using these steps to overcome alot of adversity in his life.
Excellent Book.......2007-01-10
Very Simple and easy to read and it is even a short read, but the informations is VERY simple and straightforward and I believe following the advice in the book can lead to an extraordinary life. Great book to gift as well. =)

I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning something new
GREAT BOOK FOR TEENS.......2005-09-22
I see that some people think this book is TOO easy. That's what makes it so great... there's no fluff here. Everything is simple and straight to the point. I've read all Tolly Burkan's books, and this is a good intro to his life-changing insights. I have given several copies to teenagers that I know. This is a great gift to give just about anyone, but especially teens. It will help get them on the right track sooner and make the rest of their lives easier.
Book Description
"Perception is not something that happens to us, or in us," writes Alva Noë. "It is something we do." In Action in Perception, Noë argues that perception and perceptual consciousness depend on capacities for action and thought -- that perception is a kind of thoughtful activity. Touch, not vision, should be our model for perception. Perception is not a process in the brain, but a kind of skillful activity of the body as a whole. We enact our perceptual experience.
To perceive, according to this enactive approach to perception, is not merely to have sensations; it is to have sensations that we understand. In Action in Perception, Noë investigates the forms this understanding can take. He begins by arguing, on both phenomenological and empirical grounds, that the content of perception is not like the content of a picture; the world is not given to consciousness all at once but is gained gradually by active inquiry and exploration. Noë then argues that perceptual experience acquires content thanks to our possession and exercise of practical bodily knowledge, and examines, among other topics, the problems posed by spatial content and the experience of color. He considers the perspectival aspect of the representational content of experience and assesses the place of thought and understanding in experience. Finally, he explores the implications of the enactive approach for our understanding of the neuroscience of perception.
Customer Reviews:
Perception as skillful act.......2006-12-29
To perceive, according to Nöe, is to understand the relation between our sensory data and bodily skills. To perceive an object in the world, say a cube, we must possess knowledge of how our visual input would change were we to move in relation to the object, and sense-data without such sensory-motor knowledge is blind (or, at the least, not compatible with our phenomenological experience of the world). In this way, our perception is fundamentally and inseparably tied to our embodiment. Although a controversial claim, Nöe makes the case with care and rigor, drawing on neurological evidence for experiential blindness and addressing likely and stated objections from philosophy.
The book is written in a manner that non-philosophers will grasp its main arguments, though philosophers and cognitive scientists concerned with understanding the nature of experience are the intended audience. The only criticism I find is that it does not attempt an account of how its ideas can be captured in a computational framework, though I suspect cognitive modelers will follow in the path set out by this book.
A book with information known for thousands of years, but not by everybody........2006-01-23
Action in Perception is a book that points out a way of thinking that was developed not recently, but rather thousands of years ago. While many have tried to describe it by calling it " feeling spiritual energy flow through you," the concept itself of doing actions in order to expand your perceptions is something found in the Ancient customs of Martial Arts.
Many Martial Artists may not know this, but the "forms" they do in the western world are not just for "perfection of movement." This is an impossibly, and is not it's true purpose. Rather, the forms are to have the person "feel" their bodie's movement. Overtime, they slowly take away other perception, while told to repetitiously do the same movements, until they can do them perfectly without the usage of sight, sound, taste, and smell. Only their skin detects everybody; the small electrical currents and vibrations given off by the other person.
This is only a surface of what was developed over the perception ideal within eastern culture. When it was brought to the west, these secrets were lost to many, covered in the honor traditions and other stuff that really mean little. But This book shows this way of thought in a western description, and that is why it may help others understand this knowledge once again, in a languege they can understand.
A new movement in perception.......2005-11-18
"Noë provides a persuasive account of the "enactive" approach to perception, according to which perception is not simply based on the processing of sensory information, or on the construction of internal representations, but is fundamentally shaped by the motor possibilities of the perceiving body. ... Noë puts the brain back into the body, and the body back into the world. ... The action, for enactive theorists, is not in the brain; it is the organism as a whole acting in the environment that must be treated as the site of perception. ... After reading
Noë, any account of perception purely in terms of brain representations seems rather washed out." (Shaun Gallagher, Times Literary Supplement).
A new paradigm.......2005-05-17
Finally, after all these years, we're starting to unlearn duality. There aren't two planes of reality, the physical and the mental. There are not two regions of the cosmos, the heavenly and the terrestrial. There isn't me over here, and the world over there. There's only the world, which happens to include me: the real world, the only one there is. It's where we live. The 21st century is the perfect date to begin exploring our new (same old, beautiful) world. These are a few of the rapturous thoughts this book evokes in your present reviewer. 'Action in Perception' is really fun, really smart, and really deep. It's about a completely new way to think about what perception is. Noe suggests that we don't perceive IN ORDER to move around in the world; perception just IS moving around in the world. One of his many beautiful examples goes like this (I paraphrase). Here are two trees, one closer to me, one farther. I experience them as more or less the same height. But WHY would I experience it this way, given that the closer tree takes up so much more of my visual field than the far one? Answer: The far tree doesn't look as tall as the near tree IN SPITE OF the fact that it crosses a smaller part of my visual field -- it looks as tall as the near tree BECAUSE it crosses a smaller part of my visual field, and this is just what I would expect, having experienced HOW the "apparent" sizes of things tend to CHANGE as I move through the world. The structure of the world is not stored in a 3D model in my brain -- why would I need such a model, when the world itself is out there for me to look at whenever I want to? -- what I hold onto (or, in some cases, am born with) are what might be called physical heuristics: patterns of how the shapes around me tend to change as I move. I believe this table to be rectangular not DESPITE the fact that its "apparent" shape changes as I walk around it, but BECAUSE its "apparent" shape changes as I walk around it -- in a specific pattern with which I am familiar. That pattern of geometric transformations is how I RECOGNIZE a rectangular surface. I'm probably not conveying these examples very well, but if the ideas I've been babbling about here sound at all intriguing to you, you will enjoy this book tremendously.
Book Description
This invaluable source of wisdom and inspiration for both beginning and experienced meditators sparks enthusiasm for pursuing this practice and its highest goal, self-realization.
Customer Reviews:
It has removed a veil to me.......2007-07-01
One of the best books I have ever read. There are so many teachings and I found many answers to my long unanswered questions.
Too short.......2007-04-28
The book is good but too short and gives you general ideas about meditation no details.
Simple, beautiful, accessible.......2006-10-29
This is a little gem. The essence of meditation (bliss, connection with your highest self/spirit) and its practice are communicated in a straightforward way.
I have read a number of books on meditation, so I am not sure how it would feel to read this one first, but my gut feeling is to agree with the other reviewer who suggested that this not be your introduction to the subject.
I can easily imagine going back again and again to this sweet book for inspiration and encouragement on my meditative path.
Excellent, but not universal.......2004-12-07
This book is an exceptional piece of literature on the subject of meditation, but it's not for everyone. Some may pick this up believing it to be an instruction manual for finding the Self, which it is not. It does have instructions for meditating, but rather than treat it like an aerobics class, Swami Muktananda concentrates on the spiritual application and universal depth of meditation. Basically, if you don't already understand a little bit about meditation and Hindu philosophy, alot of the read will be lost to you. It has many references to texts like the Upanishads and proverbs from Hindu culture that many readers will not understand, especially if they are totally new to meditation.
However, I would most certainly recommend that anyone interested in meditating or in Indian philosophy pick up this book. It should not be the first book you read on the subject, but if you've already studied philosophy and meditation, it will be a profoundly spiritual and uplifting read. Muktananda shares with us the truest and deepest purpose for practicing meditation, awareness and oneness with the Self. It is a must-read for anyone interested in reaching those depths of conciousness.
Essential!.......2000-07-10
Swami Muktananda was one of the greatest meditation teachers of the century. He came to the West in 70's and became very popular. In this book, Muktananda focuses on the essential aspect of his Yoga, known as Siddha Yoga, that is: Meditation. He said meditation was the most efficient way for all of us - his Yoga is open to all, he says - to re-connect with the divinity that lies in each of us. This path is the path of living an awakened life while living in the world. This little book is a perfect introduction to one of the most simple and yet most mysterious practices of Yoga. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Book Description
In this book, 42 teachers recount the ways they went beyond the call of duty to make a difference in the lives of their students. A first-grade teacher describes how she was able to undergo radiation and chemotherapy without missing a day of school because her students gave her energy and courage. A drama teacher in Houston explains that she makes casting decisions knowing that sometimes the role may be better for the student than the student is for the role. In Fort Wayne, Indiana, a teacher recalls how he used a student's suicide as an opportunity for other students to reflect and ultimately succeed. An extensive parent and teacher resource guide is included and a portion of the profits will be donated to charities listed in the book.

johnson is the shiznitzers. ewok ewok ewok.......2002-12-17
wow, dat book was great. but the more incredible part was the johnson park. Ms. Johnson's story was "delicious". When i turned to the page with picture of Ms. Johnson with a feather boa, i immediately dropped the book and i was scared for life. Then, when i mustered enough will power to pick up the book, i started to read the "Johnson" story. At first, i thought it was another dumb story, just like the other ones. but then, at the end, tears slowly trickled down my face and next thing i knew, the book turned to the page with the horrid picture and i dropped the book again. But only this time, on my toe. Although the book did more harm to me and i did to it, i thought that the book was great, especially the Susan Johnson story. Kudos and Accalades to you!
Wow.......2002-05-13
Ms. Johnson is wow. She really wrote an extraordinary book here. Her sections is almost as compelling as the tv show 24. The author has compiled some pretty wonderful stories that everyone would look forward to seeing. I'm surprised that Ms. Basille is not in this book, because she is the best teacher on earth. I had Ms. Johnson first quarter, but she was kind of boring. She would constantly talk about potato this and potato that. And if you read her section of the novel, think of a woman with the highest voice you've ever heard. Then whats up with her clothes. On Mardi Gras, she looked like an animal. And she wears the strangest shoes you've ever seen. I really enjoy reading her material. She is a published author you know. The best part about her is that she doesnt teach one real course. Lets see, Marketing (haha) Intro to occ what a joke, UCI not even funny. I'm surprised she still has a job. Then there is the UCII teacher Ms. Basille, she's awesome. Ms.Basille if you are reading this we love you. Ms. J doesnt compare to Ms. Basille becasue Ms. Basille knows what shes talking about while Ms. J just sits there and thinks about these weirdo emails. Ms. J you are alright Ms. Basille rules, period 4, T1 comp lab, UCII. Yeah

I'm a teacher, and I feel energized! I've been reading Jackie Waldman's book...a few pages at a time. It's hard to put down. I don't know if I love the teachers or the kids more! It's very obvious we are learning from each other. If you love kids, read this book! If you are a teacher or want to know a few great ones, read this book. I hope you will feel the love that has gone into Teachers with the Courage to Give. Thank you Jackie for a great tribute.

Starhawk and Hilary Valentine, renowned leaders in the Wicca movement, use the transformative fairy tale of The Twelve Wild Swans to teach an advanced class on magic. More significantly, this is an introduction to a mature level of Wicca called "reclaiming," a model of witchcraft that blends magic, personal growth, and activism. The book begins with the first chapter of the fairy tale, in which a foolish queen wishes to exchange her 12 sons for a daughter. An old woman "dressed all in black" overhears the queen and makes the wish come true, granting the queen a daughter but turning her sons into wild swans.
From here the coauthors launch into a back-and-forth structure of telling the story and then stopping to show how it applies to a witch's initiation and transformation. For example, we all must leave the castle in order to heal our past. We all must spend some time wandering in the wilderness before finding our true home, and we all must conquer some form of "wicked vows" before we can reach full maturity. These are wise leaders and strong guides, well worth following on this life-altering fairy tale. --Tara West

A fantastic journey through the recesses of your mind..........2007-04-01
This book is sometimes painful, often challenging, and occasionally glorious.
My Reclaiming community based an elements course around this book, and we based each class on the exploration of an element, as outlined in 12 Wild Swans. Starhawk artfully guides the reader through Self, gently unearthing those secret desires and wicked vows we make to ourselves. The book explains each step of the somewhat well known fairy tale as a step we, like Rose, can take. Her activities provided are thoughtful and introspective, and the stories, while occasionally quite activist, appropriate to the material and empathy inducing.
Perhaps it was the timing, but this book stimulated a great deal of introspection and change in me. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to dive headfirst into the recesses of their mind, and figure out what exactly mucks about back there.
Enjoy!
Sorry.......2005-12-14
If you're looking for a metaphysical interpretation of a fairy tale, go straight to Women Who Run With the Wolves by Clarissa Estes or Iron John by Robert Bly. Both will leave you with the feeling that you have been respected as a reader, that you have come closer to understanding yourself, and that a folk tale can contain great truths. On the other hand this book by Starhawk was, for me, almost impossible to read at all. Her witchier-than-thou attitude put together with her total self-righteousness, boring hateful feminism, and relentless telling and retelling and retelling of one thin little story is just awful. Sorry I can't agree with the other reviewers.
A serious book review.......2005-10-26
I like to start this review with a quote from Scott Cunningham's book Living Wicca, " Books can lift spirits, heal our wounds, steel our courage and strengthen our religious resolve.... Books are a great source of wisdom... Books aren't foolproof. Some books contain virtually no accurate information. Many readers are apt to believe anything in print. 'After all they say 'its in this book right here. That proves it's true.' Unfortunately, nearly anyone can write a book and even have it publish. Does this ensure that its contents are true?... Listen to your intuition. In other words feel free to pick and choose among the published... textbooks to decide what feels right... Books are tools to be used mark them with pencil or bookmarks". I like this quote because I have read several Books from which even though most I have found very helpful or that had some helpful information from time to time I have read a book and found that I disagree with the writer. However there are times that despite this I have found some tiny bits of good info. This book is one of those books. I came across this book when looking for A spiral dance which had been recommended to me for my daughter. 12 wild swans popped up on amazon's suggested reading. Though I haven't read a Spiral Dance I went a head and grabbed 12 wild swans since it had such good reviews, for me to read.
This book has a lot of info that I disagree with, info that I found great and helpful. There were times I was very disappointed as I felt her motivations as an activist sometimes were to strong and disrupted the flow of the book.
The Book's has good info like that on "a wicked vow", how to deal with anger, both within and directed at you. Also finding your shadow self.
However her opinions on dreams I strongly disagree with as a Dream interpreter and reader. Furthermore she makes a statement about no "real witch" uses certain terms, such as unconscience, which she claims Freud used yet there is NO definition for this in the dictionary and what she defines is the sub-conscience which is the term I think she meant. Since I do use Sub-conscience is she saying I am not a real witch or Wiccan? Perhaps she should have said no one in her tradition uses it and why. I have no problem using sub-conscience and conscience and in my opinion to say they do not exist is like saying that frontal vision and peripheral vision doesn't exist, as it is my opinion that the sub-conscience is for our mind like the peripheral vision.
She goes from giving advice that is logical and sensible in the section on nettles to writing about things in a way that is not factual.
She writes Why as witches we must sometimes endure the sting and it begins very well. Her info on plant allies and our ancestors and their knowledge of plants is excellent and very factual.
Getting to know your plant allies is thoroughly enjoyable. Her view on respecting all living things was beautifully written and then she makes a false statement. In her attempt to use an example how we must endure pain she lists Yoga. Continuing her false statement by saying we have to endure bumps, bruises and discomfort. WHAT?!?! This is NOT yoga. We do not teach bruising the body or "Bruising egos" but loving the body and letting go of the ego. One problem with those new to yoga is they have been programmed with the no pain no gain and this is not yoga. Pain and discomfort is not yoga. On the contrary we are taught to listen to the body and avoid pain and discomfort. For her to use yoga and list it in the way she did showed her ignorance about yoga. It also lost the point she was trying to make. If you are interested in yoga or wish to verify this fact I suggest finding books or classes with a certified Yogi.
Her section on Silence takes another view than is in Scot Cullingham's book Living Wicca and is a good read for comparing views on silence. Some of the suggested meditations and rituals are very good and can be used for uses other than magic and rituals. For those who are a nervous type or talk-a-tive this could be a meditation that would interest you. The section on empowerment is very interesting as is the section on "The privilege". A quote from the book, "the behavior or pattern that may have served us well when we were powerless can become destructive and abusive when we gain power". It was a very good way of describing how a victim can become the abuser. The sections and exercises on working on core worth to levitate deflation/inflation of the self were also very good. As a reiki healer if I become inflated and forget I am only the vessel and the healing power doesn't come from me then I block the flow of healing energy with my ego. So finding ones center or "core worth" are great meditations and rituals. This section is very interesting, as well as the sections on shielding, glamour, character work, aspecting and gathering allies. When she writes about the Sabbaths she wrote them in a way that is poetic, colorful and easy to vision. It was a great read. When she begins to speak of fear esp. the fear of death it hit a personal chord. As I fear death and found her trance the orchard of immortally EXCELLENT! The book is worth buying for this alone in my opinion despite its other flaws. In the last chapter of the outer path she breaks the flow of the book again with returning to her activist motives.
Most of the book's exercises are written for a group or at least a pair and not for a solitary witch. To work with these rituals, meditations and exercises one may have to adjust them for the solitaire. For those who are activists and involved in political protests and so forth the book is good, however for those who lead a more humble life her activist views, and constant use of hers and others experiences as activist could possibly spoil the book for you. If you can get around it and pass over the few flaws then you may also find some helpful information.
However I think the quote from Mr Cunningham is well said and applies here. Underline what is good and pass the rest.
Deepening Self-Wisdom-for Men too...........2004-06-13
This book tells a story- as in many of starhawks books, and it relates to how our lives are magickal an not. It helps us see what life is all about, who we are deep inside-by teaching through excersizes and story telling. Every book starhawk has written i have never even considered it feminist at all, she never writes in way where the sexes are seperated-they are one they way i see her view the sexes. I am a man, and have read many works by starhawk, and people wave the feminist word around to much, her books have definatley nothing to do with gender at all!. She writes books to open the soul and mind-always through story and mental/ritual excersizes. She has a definate writing style which many enjoy, as do i. Great read-any of her books!!!
