"'Magic? Me, do magic?' Magic was a thing of schools and books. No proper Acalon did magic. 'Oh, no--please, you're mistaken, my lady. I'm no mage.'

Sandry met his eyes squarely. 'You just danced a magical working, Pasco Acalon. I am never mistaken about such things.'"

Four years after we last saw the young mages Sandry, Tris, Daja, and Briar in the Circle of Magic quartet, Sandry is back. Now 14 years old, she is helping her great-uncle, Duke Vedris IV, ruler of Emelan, recover after a heart attack. But there's no rest for the weary mage. A mysterious murderer is afoot, and it quickly becomes clear that Sandry and her reluctant young protégé, Pasco, are the only ones who can stop the killings. Unfortunately, Pasco comes from a long line of harriers, or provost's guards, and his burly family does not think highly of a boy who dances magical spells. It takes some fancy footwork to convince Pasco of the need for his special brand of magic, and Sandry is just the girl for the job.

This first title in Tamora Pierce's new series, The Circle Opens, will thrill fans of her terrifically popular previous books, including The Circle of Magic quartet and The Song of the Lioness quartet. With her spellbinding choreography of wit, gore, and intrigue, Pierce never takes a false step. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

Lady Sandrilene fa Toren is a noble girl whose thread magic wove together the power - and the personal bonds - of four young magicians. Now, Lady Sandrilene is on her own and saddled with teaching magic to a restless boy, safeguarding her uncle's health, and tracking down a brutal murderer.

4 out of 5 stars Sandry becomes a teacher.......2007-04-02

Sandry is now living with her uncle, Duke Vedris IV after he had his heart attack. Sandry is now watching over him in Summersea. When Sandry fa Toren finds a young boy dancing a spell on a beach she knows right away that he has magic. Dispite that Sandry is only a young girl she knows that she must teach him to controle and use his magic before anything bad happens.

Before Sandry knows it she hears of a killer that is killing all the membes in a wealthy, merchant family...even the children. While Sandry is teaching the boy magic she must also find the killer(s). That will be difficult. And...young people can be stubborn...so can her student, Pasco.

This is an awesome book! I hope that you read it!

4 out of 5 stars Outside th circle.......2006-08-03

It was nice to read about the same circle of magic characters and to get to know Sandry a little better. Thae idea of dance magic was an unusual one and was well developed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-07-13

I was looking around for a book to read and a friend suggested this series. At frst i wasn't so sure but in the end it turned out to be a really good book.

1 out of 5 stars Hmm........2006-05-08

I've got a friend who absolutely ADORES Tamora Pierce and so she made me read the first ("Alanna the First Adventure") which I found OK but nothing totally exciting. But when I started this... ugh. For one thing... how many boys do you know who just dance, are willing to admit it to everyone, and start a sort of career in it when they are young? Not many (no offense to the boys that are that way.) This boy also seems far too perfect. And Sandry? Talk about perfect!!! She really seems to make no mistakes. Add that to all the gore stuck in for taste, and it's gross. The only way it could get any worse would be if there was any more romance.

5 out of 5 stars Sandry the She-ro Again.......2005-09-21

Sandry starts off the second Pierce quartet covering the lives of the four young mages at age 14, now. This book gives all of the Circle of Magic fans just what we were waiting for after immersing ourselves in the Winding Circle lives of Sandry, Tris, Daja, and Briar and their great mage teachers Lark, Niko, Frostpine, and Rosethorn.

Sandry, still a student of Lark's, finds herself in the "in between" role of teacher as well. I don't want to say too much because, as readers of Pierce know, the unfolding of the plot is pure "magic." This one is filled with Pierce's wonderful wisdom and insight ---"Live the moment you're in. Stay open to all the things around you ..."

Lots of new characters and developments await as Sandry and student, Pasco, begin to learn the difference between academic mages and ambient mages. So, get to reading today!!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Jar Jar is so funny........2001-12-12

Jar Jar is so funny because he slurps up a frog and he splashes it into Sebulba's soup. That made my great-grandmother crack up! She read the whole book with me and she said funny things about the book. I think she was so excited that I could read it by myself, and thought that the book was extremely funny.

4 out of 5 stars I liked the book a lot........1999-07-21

Even though I am almost 11, I loved this because I thought Jar-Jar was funny, and very clumsy. I want to say hi to my mommy, because she might read this. ***Meghan***

1 out of 5 stars Character is weak... to say the least........1999-06-15

Review: Are you kidding? Would give it 0 stars if it were possible. This character is a waste of time - nothing but one long, very expensive FX test shot.

1 out of 5 stars Out of touch........1999-06-02

This book is moderately entertaining by effectively providing a series of hand-drawn snapshots from the film. However, it centers around Jar Jar's blatant attempt to steal something from a shopkeeper! This is written off as 'he was hungry', but never addressed. In the end Anakin scolds Jar Jar and tells him to 'Be less afraid' after various run-ins with people Jar Jar annoyed. I'm not trying to be overly humorless and critical, but I also try to keep my children away from books that gloss over 'petty' crimes. His theft is supposed to be cute and funny, but loses its fractional humor by devolving into insults and physical abuse.

5 out of 5 stars Jar Jar!.......1999-06-02

Jar Jar is the best, I love this book. I am eight andhalf years old. Please other kids should read this book.

Book Description

A funny, entertaining introduction to Ben Franklin and his many inventions, including the story of how he created the "magic square." A magic square is a box of nine numbers arranged so that any line of three numbers adds up to the same number, including on the diagonal! Teachers and kids will love finding out about this popular teaching tool that is still used in elementary schools today!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book!!!.......2005-10-17

I love this book! It introduced me to magic squares. Sometimes they're hard but not always. I read the book in 3rd grade. We were doing math groups and Mrs. Wrigely said" Today we are doing Magic squares."
What is a magic square?" I asked.
"It is 9 cubes that all have to equal the same number." Mrs. Wrigely
And that's how I was introduced to magic squares. I recommend this book for kids 6 and above. I think that because some words may be a little challenging for kids that are 5 or 4.

5 out of 5 stars MY BOOK REVIEW BY THE COSMIC GENIUS.......2004-09-28

This book was great for kid's teenagers and adults. What I'm trying to say is that this book is suitable for all ages. I think elementary teachers should read this to their students. This book is great to teach kids about the past and how inventions are still used today, in different ways. I learned how Ben Franklin invented most of the instruments we use today; like the stove, bifocals, flippers and many other inventions. I encourage you to buy this book if you have young kids or not.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Modern Quabalah Text.......2007-05-28

Unlike most books on the subject, William Gray's 'The Ladder of Lights' speaks to the reader personally in a simple and sane way, without any obstruction to meaning.

His writing style is very different to other authors who produced books around the same period or earlier and his approach is very down to earth.

He also has a clever capacity to put simple meanings into short phrases which are designed to illuminate and assist the reader in understanding concepts which in other books are consistently given obscure meanings.

He is frequently able to bring fresh meanings and contemplation to Quabalistic symbols and ideas in a way that is very matter of fact which provides the reader with ample room for contemplation.

A very good book that should be on the shelf of any serious Western Magician.

4 out of 5 stars A Companion Piece to Fortune?.......2003-11-04

Hands down, this is one of the best books on modern Qabala ever written! Gray takes a step-by-step look at the Ten Sephiroth and their traditional attributions in each of the Four Qabalistic Worlds. A relatively simple, no-nonsense approach to modern Qabalism.

In some ways, I view this book as a companion piece to Dion Fortune's much better-known work, "The Mystical Qabalah," since both books provide the reader with a fairly straightforward approach to this challenging subject. Where Fortune starts at the top of the Tree of Life and works her downward, however, Gray starts at the bottom of the Tree and works his way to the top. Although Grey's interpretation of the Tree is similar to Fortune's, by approaching the material from a completely different perspective he is also able to provide new insight.

This book's greatest strength is that it analyzes each of the ten Sephiroth from each of the Four Qabalistic worlds, providing the reader with something sorely missed in Dion Fortune's classic book on the subject. This book's greatest weakness is that, unlike Fortune, Gray pays almost no attention to the organization of the Sephiroth upon the Tree, or to the relationships between them. Without a word of explanation Gray also reverses the traditional Yetziratic attributions of Malkuth and Yesod, assigning them to the angelic choirs of Cherubim and Ashim respectively, although I do see the logic and consistency of this attribution.

Overall, this is a good, solid title for somebody interested in approaching modern (non-rabbinical) Qabalism for the first time. I'd recommend reading Dion Fortune's book first, if you haven't already, and then tackling this book immediately afterwards for a different take on the same material.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2000-06-08

This is by far the best book I have seen which explains the Qabballah. It uses simple language, and very clever symbolism to explain the workings of it. Well worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Funnybunny Tale Tickles the Funny Bone!.......2004-06-22

P.J. Funnybunny became a hit in our house when we first read "It's Not Easy Being A Bunny." Marilyn Sadler returns with another Funnybunny tale that tickles the funny bone. Featuring the usual cast of P.J., little sister Honey Bunny, best friend Potts Pig, and the large Funny Bunny family, it offers simple vocabulary and large font. In this Step 2 reader designed for preschoolers thru Grade 1, P.J.'s dad brings home a magic kit full of amazing tricks and a whole lot of trouble. The book teaches children the importance of practicing. One day after reading the book overheard my 4.5 year old daughter chanting, "Practice! Practice! Practice!" as she was playing. If you hear P. J. say, "Ta-da!" then watch out! Your candy bar may - "POOF" - disappear like Potts Pig's did. Or your doll may just float in thin air. As an added bonus, the last page has a disappearing coin trick. Readers - definitely try this at home!

4 out of 5 stars "This is so cool!".......2001-12-18

This book is a Step into Reading book, and is a Step 3 book (for grades 2-3). Did you see Star Wars Episode 1? Did you see Darth Maul sent out after the Jedi, and his subsequent attack on Qui-Gon Jinn on Tatooine? Well, this book tells the story from Darth Maul's perspective. It covers his conversation on Coruscant with Darth Sidious, his trip to Tatooine, and his adventures on that planet.

My son was very happy to get this book; he started reading and then proclaimed, "This is so cool!" This book is chocked full of matte illustrations, and containing a short, but well written story. My son and I both highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Mom of 10 year old autistic boy.......2002-04-12

As the mother of an autistic son, we have had a great deal of difficulty in getting him to enjoy reading. He doesn't understand a great many words, but has a few "subjects" he really enjoys. Star Wars,Episode 1 is one of them. This book has been a real find that he loves! I am getting more of them, as they don't "talk down" to kids, really explain the movie in detail, and help kids understand many things (in life, as well as the movie!) better. We are really looking forward to the next Star Wars movie this summer- as well as the books that will follow it!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful adventure story!.......2002-01-02

DANGERS OF THE CORE takes a section of the movie 'Phantom Menace' and, step by step, breaks down the action that flies by so quickly on the big screen. This makes it easy for children to follow. The excitement starts with the first sentence and never lets up!

The illustrations are expressive and dramatic; nicely done.

DANGERS teaches children to respect all living beings. Qui-Gon Jinn is the epitome of patience (especially with Jar Jar!), and remains calm, steady and in control even in the midst of danger. Excellent life lessons for children!

Another plus: The story doesn't 'talk down' to children. It assumes an appropriate level of maturity and intelligence.

I'd take off half a star because Jar Jar's speech is impossible for some children to understand when reading the book on their own.

Nevertheless, all the children to whom I read DANGERS OF THE CORE just loved it! And with such a variety of characters and emotions, it's fun to read out loud, too.

Highly recommended for children as well as old fogeys who are young at heart!

5 out of 5 stars Getting Boys Excited about Reading.......2000-04-19

"Dangers of the Core" is a great beginning reader, especially for a boy. The book carefully summarizes the underwater chase from the Episode 1 movie into easy-to-read language that captures a boy's attention. I have had trouble finding interesting early readers that my son will read; but when we found this book, he would not put it down. He read it TWICE in the first day--without prompting! Thank you for sparking his interest in reading!

The best part is when Anakin's pit droid helps him get the power plug from Sebulba. He has to be brave. The brave little droid helps Anakin put the power plug in the engine. Everybody cheers when Anakin wins the race.

This was a good little book. The thing that impressed me with it is that the story actually fits into the continuity of The Phantom Menace. The art is well-done and was obviously done by someone who understands and takes pride in the Star Wars universe. A lot of books that are similar to this seem to be done by people who hadn't even seen the relevant movie. Incidentally, George Lucas has claimed that the pit droids are his favorite characters from Episode 1.

I have a few hesitations abt this book: I think some of th relaxation and body awareness exercises can mess you up, all the while that they make you feel good for a time. Exercises where you try to sense all the minute sensations in your body, can be destructive. The body needs to be aware of itself to some extent, yet awakening too much awareness sensitises nerves which in the long run, are best left not too overly sensitised. Messing with the unconscious in this fashion, isnt the safest thing to do. Yet this is till a useful book.

Also, the exercise where one viualises the body, in a relaxed state, as ' full of holes' may, in the long run, create some real physical problems, as far as I can see. Far better to heed Crowley's advice, and regard or visulaize the body as primarily functioning silently with 'perfect frictionless ease,' each indidividual organ doing its respective task in unison with all the others.

Heed the works of Emma Curtis Hopkins, if you would to learn more on this. Dont be put off by her pollyannish style: the proper spiritualising of the body can do wonders for some people.

In a nutshell: the simple breathing and relaxation exercises set forth in this book are wprth the price of the book alone. and are as good as many such exercises you may find elsewhere.

This little volume is, quite simply, one of the best brief health books one could possibly own.

Embraced within Regardie's intelligent perspective, are a few chapters on breathing, relaxation, and body 'awareness'(you'll have to read the book to find out how useful this is, and how its done,) that are the best little, astute guides to health practices outside of diet, exercise, and advice from a regular, reputable physician.

The care and precision with which Regardie pursues his ideas, contribute to the overall personal sense of intelligent caution that readers should have towards their own health matters in general. Regardie conveys this necessary attitude admirably to the reader.

To top it all off, Regardie includes an excellent, concise version and guide to the basic meditation he utilizes in his highly useful book, "The Art of True Healing," currently available in an inexpensive edition, but little modified from its original form, by Marc Allen. I won't even bother to go into how supremely useful this little essay is: just go read the Amazon.com reviews yourself, and you'll see.

Anyone looking to do well with Regardie's "Art of True Healing" would be wise also, to procure his "One-Year Manual." The tips in it on breathing, relaxation, etc., should greatly augment and enhance the "True Healing" meditation technique for many.

Add Ramacharaka's "Science of Breath," and Rama Prasads' " Nature's Finer Forces," and you will be adding even more of Regardie's fave resources to gain perspective from.

(New Falcon Press also markets useful recordings - of Regardie himself ! - that assist in the performance of the breathing, 'middle pillar,' body awareness, and relaxation exercises that he pursues in "The One Year Manual."

Regardie was a chiropractic by profession, and no doubt utilized many of the simple techniques ofered up in the "The One Year Manual" with his clients. He also gave lectures and such on relaxation.

The title is really a reference to the fact, that any unified technique or set of techniques designed to improve health and life, generally take about a year to fully master.

The only area this volume falls short, perhaps, is in the value of psychotherapy for both physical, as well as mental health. Regardie elswewhere is a great believer in such, for the beginning occultist, facing the stress of 'alternative' practices.

(I would go further, and add that anyone serious about their physical health, would do well to invest time and resources in some suitable counseling/therapy, as well as pursue physical practices, nutrition, exercise, and meditation.)

I won't even go into how excellently Regardie's methods have come to make me feel, or how they have improved my entire life. I will leave it to you to imagine ...

Regardie's intelligent perspective? Yes - twenty-plus years experience with Regardie's techniques, have shown me that Regardie was even smarter than I thought he was.

There are other Regardie books ("Lazy Mans Guide to Relaxation," "(Healing) Energy Prayer and Relaxation," ) by Aquarian Press and New Falcon, that are also useful for health/meditation purposes. However, they are currently out of print. No doubt they will be re-released soon.

Even the Golden Dawn large volume, by Llewellyn or Falcon Press, has some breathing/relaxation exercises that those in good health, and cautious, could use to some advantage.

It is my understanding that Weiser/Red Wheel will be re-releasing the "One-Year Manual" for its current catalog.

5 out of 5 stars Great Start.......2003-03-14

I have only read the first two chapters of this book, but I wanted to put some feedback where there is none. The book is written for you to read one chapter with its specific exercize per month. Isreal Regardie is usually very WORDY as was typical for the time period and being a serious occult writer, BUT this book is not wordy at all. This book is a small quick and from what I can tell excellent place to start actually practicing the occult. For instance the first chapter and exercise is to just sit/lay and work on being sensitive with what your feeling. The second exercize is on breathing. The rest of the book seems to be very practical and from what I can tell I would recommend to any student on spiritual practices. This book is written not to exclude anyone with any particular religious belief but only to start a practical approach to spiritual practice.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An Okay Book BUT Not a Primer - a review of "Surprise for a Princess".......2005-12-15

This a sweet little book that has the 3 good fairies pulling together a birthday party for Briar Rose/Aurora. Essentially, it is very close the same episode from the movie except without any hint of danger in the background. It's all cheerful and nice.

Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather try to make a cake and a dress but they only end up making a mess. That is, until they whip out their wands and make everything right.

Now, having said that, we come to the "Step into reading" part of the book.

Level 2 is supposed to be for children in the Preschool to Grade 1 age range. It is defined as "For children who recognize familiar words and sound out new words with help".

Well, in my opinion, they would need a whole lot of help. And the prime reason for this is that the book is written entirely in the past tense. My daughter (5), for example, can read simple primer materials: books such as the "Biscuit" series, or Margaret Hillert's primers. But she was entirely stymied by the use of past tense.

Examples:

She lived in the forest...
While she was gone, they planned...
Briar Rose was returning...

(So that she could read live but not lived.)

Four Stars. It's a nice book that I would buy again. The simple text makes it a good read-aloud that doesn't take much time. My only concern would be if you were thinking about using "Surprise for a Princess" as a primer. I would be afraid by the time they could read the text, that the story would be `beneath' their interest, i.e. their level of sophistication.

More text follows so you can judge for yourself:

"Let's have a party for Briar Rose," said Merryweather.
"With a cake!" said Fauna.
"And a dress fit for a princess," said Flora.
Flora began to make the dress.
She cut. She pinned. She trimmed.
Merryweather tried to help.
But the dress was a mess.
