Book Description

Look Closely

That's all the anonymous letter said, but attorney Hailey Sutter understands the meaning behind the well-chosen words. Someone wants her to investigate what happened to her mother, who died when Hailey was only seven.

The death was ruled accidental, but Hailey begins having flashbacks that tell a different story; a pounding at the door . . . her mother struggling to stand . . . a man with a gold ring that flashed in the night as he held her mother's lifeless body.

Obsessed with uncovering the truth, Hailey can't trust anyone, especially her father, whose secrecy both unnerves and protects her. Desperate to remember that fatal night, she seeks out the brother and sister who left home after their mother's death. But they have disappeared. It's soon clear to Hailey that the answer is right in front of her -- all she has to do is find the courage to look closely . . .

5 out of 5 stars A "Can't Put It Down" Book.......2007-03-28

I just started reading Laura Caldwell. Just when I finish a book by her, and think the next one can't get any better, it does. This book is a definate 5 Star. I thought Rome Affair was good, but Look Closely, is even better. I highly recommend this one. A real page turner.

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2006-09-04

I don't know if I'm hypercritical or what, but lately I have a hard time reading books where the author's lack of craft and subtlety interferes with the story. I bought this book because I really like two of Laura Caldwell's other books, and this one got high ratings from reviewers. I thought I was in for another fun read, and I was certainly not distracted by her technique in other books. It's almost like it was written by someone else entirely.

The premise of the story, that Hailey Sutter is looking into her mother's death based on a note she receives, is an intriguing one. But the author has to repeat again and again how isolated Hailey is, and after a while I found the whole "recovered memories" thing to be a bit ridiculous. Maybe I don't understand enough about the psychology of this process, but I just found it a little silly. For example, as she's having a conversation, or taking a tour through her old house, she suddenly pauses, Christopher Walken style, and has a flashback of a memory she's never known about before. I mean, does this happen to real people? I just didn't buy it after the fourth or fifth time it happened. Without ruining the ending, I have to say that it made me roll my eyes in the same vein.

I'll keep trying Laura Caldwell's books because I liked her other ones, but skip this one if you have a low tolerance level for authors who tell instead of show.

5 out of 5 stars Never a Dull Moment.......2006-07-24

This was the first Laura Caldwell book I had ever read so I can't relate LOOK CLOSELY to the author's chick-lit reputation, but I can say that this book is non-stop suspense, the kind that you can't put down and the kind that keeps you guessing all the way to the stunning end. Protagonist Haily Sutter's courageous charm glitters on every page. She's a one-of-a-kind character that makes you wish she were your best friend, but you'd never wish to be in her dysfunctual family. There wasn't a mini-second of down time in this rivoting story of a brilliant lawyer juggling a high-power career while tracking down the fate of her mother.
I'd recommend it to anyone who appreciates a good, intelligent mystery.

4 out of 5 stars Retrospective Murder.......2006-06-12

The deep suspicions harbored by Hailey Sutter towards her immediate family members on the mysterious death surrounding her mother is expertly crafted to keep the readers on edge for the major portion of the plot. Its intriguing to readers why on earth Hailey's father failed to communicate any knowledge of the whereabouts of Hailey's elder brother & sister after more than 20 years.

Just when you think it may sound too preposterous an idea that a close family member whom you live with fail to disclose their whereabouts and were not declared missing even on police records, the plot regains credibility when Hailey investigates for herself and finds the spouses of her missing brother & sister. It is through the spouses that Hailey gains a better insight into her long lost siblings. Hailey finds out through letters sent to her former family maid, Della, that her elder sister is mentally disturbed having been institutionalized at some point after high school.

Just when the plot was building nicely towards the resolution, the events that unfolded in the last chapter canceled out the suspense. What was so infuriating was the far fetched revealation of who did what to whom and the need to keep Hailey in the dark about the mystery of her immediate family members!!

On the whole, it is a readable suspense novel except for the ending.

5 out of 5 stars A Fresh Voice.......2005-10-19

Laura Caldwell may have made her well-earned reputation in the chick-lit field, but here she demonstrates that her talent is bigger than that label. A solidly crafted mystery, this book may shake up your own beliefs about who you are and how you got that way. And isn't that what great fiction--in any genre--is supposed to do?

5 out of 5 stars Very informative book.......2007-04-25

I purchased this book several months ago seeking advice and tools to help my daughter who is developmentally delayed. I found this book to be filled with very practical advice and tools that a parent can use to help their child to develop great language skills. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource for parents.......2005-02-01

Look Who's Talking is a wonderful resource for parents who have questions about their child's speech. Laura Dyer, a speech-language therapist with a master's degree in communications disorders, has written a book that is well researched, easy to use and full of practical advice.

Look Who's Talking begins with an overview of speech and language development, including influences, potential problems and causes. Complicating issues such as auditory processing, hearing, language delays, and developmental delays are discussed. One of the key features of this book is the very detailed descriptions provided for each age and developmental stage; parents of babies and older children will find this a helpful resource.

5 out of 5 stars Offers straight answers to common questions.......2004-10-17

Knowledgeably written by Laura Dyer (a speech-language therapist especially skilled in working with children), Look Who's Talking! How To Enhance Your Child's Language Development, Starting At Birth draws upon academic research and field work alike in order to show how parents just how they can help stimulate their children's ability to use language. Individual chapters address such topics as proverbial signs and gestures; common language development concerns and warning signs; steps for successful sign language usage; bilingualism and second-language learning; the unique challenges of international adoptions; using music to enhance language development, and so much more, Look Who's Talking! offers straight answers to common questions and is highly recommended reading for the parents of bubbling young personalities wanting to express themselves with an articulation suitable to their age.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful Book!.......2004-05-12

Look Who's Talking is an excellent book. Ms. Dyer has obviously reviewed a large volume of research (see the notes section for many helpoful resources)and has covered many topics. Yet, she has managed to write in terms that are easily understood and helpful to parents and others. She has included specific examples to illustrate important points. Her book is filled with helpful and encouraging statements like these.

- You are your child's first and most important language model.
- Language is best learned by doing.
- Talking about a child's interests helps language development.
- Active learning is better than passive learning.

The author describes scaffolding as it relates to speech and language development. She includes helpful charts which provide information about a wide variety of topics including the following.

- Sound Acquisition
- Consonant Cluster Acquisition
- Recommended Staff-Child Ratios (childcare centers)
- Signs of Hearing Impairment

I have a copy of this book myself, and I have given the book as a baby shower gift. I also have the author's Little Language Songs for Little Ones tape, which my children and I enjoy listening to in the car.

You'll be glad you added this book to your personal or professional library.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Every Parent!.......2004-04-02

This book is a treasure--a definite "must-have" for every parent's bookshelf!

Speech and Language pathologist, Laura Dyer has written the ultimate book on how children acquire speech and
language skills during the first seven years of life. The book is comprehensive in its scope, yet is very readable
and practical as well.

Do you wonder how to tell if a child is experiencing developmental lags, or speech difficulties?

Maybe you want to know the ideal time to introduce a foreign language to a child, or how to teach English to a child
adopted from another country.

Should you use sign language to improve communication with your child, even if they aren't hearing impaired?

How can a parent or caregiver ready a child for the important task of learning to read?

In crystal clear fashion, Laura Dyer explains all that and more!
Page after page is packed with practical advice, anecdotes, resources, and sidebars filled with the easy to
understand nuggets of information any parent can understand and apply. No technical, head-scratching data. No

5 out of 5 stars Healthy alternatives to surgical facelifts.......2004-10-03

This is a great book for women like me, who are still pretty young (i'm 38), but starting to see signs of drooping. It reminded me there is a hell of alot more I could do besides focus on expensive and invasive surgery. This book is a primer for multiple alternatives: facial excercise, breathing, facial massage, posture, cosmetic ingredients, clothes, makeup... but it also encourages a deeper approach: accepting yourself, honoring your history, self esteem, looking at the social pressure to be beautiful, doing what makes you happy. Of course it doesn't go into detail on these things or it would be 1000's of pages. The point of the book is to lead someone to take a wholistic approach to beauty - one that respects who they are on the inside and the outside - looking at all of what makes a beauty.

5 out of 5 stars A Book to Inspire You Back to Yourself.......2006-05-24

I shelved self help books years ago until I let myself go too far away from myself. Laura DuPriest, like me, already walked this road and now she is guiding me back to the woman I once was with "A Beautiful New You". Honestly, she takes you by the hand and gently shows the reader, through her book, no matter how far you've gone away from yourself, you can come back, at any age! The pictures alone speak for the content of the book. Laura's 'before' picture shows a loving woman hiding underneath layers of self doubt - but watch out. In her 'after' picture, she comes out like a phoenix ascending from the ashes - looking breathtakingly 20 years younger. She writes simply and honestly from her heart. Her client stories are as compelling as her own. I love this book because it speaks to my own journey back as I now undertake it. For all those beautiful 40-60 year old women who remember the energy and vitality of their youth and want to reclaim their inner and outer beauty, your mentor has written a guide and provided you with a map. Now get to it! Get this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal for Real Women.......2005-08-25

I found this book SO inspirational! Laura isn't just a gorgeous talented woman - she is someone who has been there and back. Her courage and understanding touched my heart. Each woman in the book is a great story of taking back one's own life - don't we as women all have times when we give everything to everybody else until there's nothing left to give? The makeovers were so helpful for me to see what I could do, and her how to's have taken the mystery out of it for me. I love that these are women I can relate to. And don't even start on my brows! Now I finally know what to do after so many years of trying to figure out what to do with them. Her advice on taking care of your diet and excercise is so doable and has helped me tremendously - eight pounds off and so much more energy! The best thing is that I am getting the old me back...
I've read so many other how to books, watched so many makeover shows, and could never see how to apply it to me. Plus those were either body, or diet, or makeup, or inspiration - how awesome to have all of those put together in such a simple and easy format!!!!!
Love you Laura - thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Very worthwhile, (unless you are already perfect)!.......2005-07-24

Real life examples for real people. I read it in two days and am starting my own program now. I loved the stories. Ms. DuPriest's book profiles the programs of people she knows and has worked with. I've read a diet book or two and the women's books and magazines on how to tap into your innerself, but nothing has done it for me like this book. It's pass along to your friends material.

4 out of 5 stars review.......2005-07-22

Haven't finished yet, but so far it seems very helpful. I am also a hairstylist who would like to help others feel beautiful inside & out, so this book gives me a tool to help myself first & to refer to my clients.

5 out of 5 stars Motivating a Change.......2005-07-19

I loved this book!. I'm 40 this year and after struggling with my much weight and not feeling as good about myself as I would like too, the stories and advice in this book were hugely motivating. It was very refreshing to read the words of real people and how they used Laura's methods to achieve success, not the words of a celebrity author just trying to make more money. This is not just another fad diet book that falls short of a permanent change. Been there, done that. Also, the beauty and styling tips are great, especiall the section on eyes and eyebrows. If you are in your 30's or 40's a bit overweight and looking for a change -- I recommend you read this!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Spectacular Finale to an Amazing Series!.......2004-10-03

You'll have to read the ending (or well near it) to find out my favorite part in this entire book. Hint: Miguel+Leah! These two were together the whole series with two breakups and problems with other side attractions (Shane and Sabrina). Now that they're starting college, Leah is miserable, but the ending of their time in this book changes all that =D

Jenna and Peter are about to start their senior year, with Jesse and Nicole as other seniors (although Jesse and Nicole aren't a couple). Jenna's birthday was mentioned early in this book, as was Melanie's. Peter is thrilled about adopting one of the Junior Explorers into his family, and about the fact that his brother David is marrying Jenna's sister Caitlin (Jenna also is excited).

Nicole is starting senior year and breaks up with Noel for being superficial and for flirting with Gail. There is one emotional moment with Gail and Nicole in this book, and it seems that Courtney (Nicole's best friend) and Nicole have someone else to see at CCHS next year...

Ben is in starry-eyed shock over Bernie, his new girlfriend. Even his parents like her! These two are good together.

And finally...Melanie and Jesse. First he liked her, then they got together, then she broke up with him...and then they fell in love with each other. Melanie has to deal with a rough driving lesson or many in here, while Jesse has to convince a rather nonconvincing person as a favor to a family member. They're starting Jesse's senior and Melanie's junior years together (and one of the funniest scenes in this series involves these two and is in this book!)

Overall, this book is amazing. Like the title says, a spectacular finale to an amazing series. I wish that Laura Peyton Roberts could have made more books like this, but with Miguel and Leah starting college (and Leah going away) I suppose this was a good place to stop. Fantastic finale!

    4 out of 5 stars really good.......2003-03-13

this is a good book.....the part with leah and miguel makes me a bit sad, i actually cried while i read it. since they're graduating, it was bringing out my own feelings about my graduation in june. but its still a good book, just cause a book makes u cry doesn't mean its bad. :-)

5 out of 5 stars One of my fave in the series.......2002-07-08

I stumbled across these books by chance in my local library, and have learned to like them. This book is actually about and ending point in the Eight Prime. Leah is going away to college, and Miguel is too, only he'll be at the community college, so he won't be that far away. Finally Nicole starts to have a little faith in herself, but I think she still has some hurtles to overcome, and I think the next few books are going to be tough on her cause everyone knows that the only reason she is on the squad is because Melanie quit. But it's cool that her and Gail are finally starting to work out their problems, and are starting to become real good friends. I think Gail could totally help Nicole realize that it's not about looks. I love the part in this book where Nicole dumbs her man!! ( I think his name is Neil but I can't remember right now) He was mad hitting on Gail at Melanie's pool party, and Nicole just got sick of it cause he was using her anyway.
Melanie is my favorite character, because unlike most cheerleaders, she's not shallow and self asorbed. I wish she wouldn't have quit, cause she was the best, and she did deserve to be there instead of crybaby Nicole. Melanie is so sweet!! She's really nice, and so is Jesse. But hey, at least next year she'll be captain, then maybe Nicole will finally have a sweet caring friend who isn't brainless!!
Jesse is cool as ever too. He is working out his problems with his family, and helps out Brittany (Bee as he calls her) I think Brit is really cool, and hopefully will be mentioned in the later series.
The whole Jenna and Peter thing is as it always is. I always find their plot lines so boring and unrealistic, just plain revolting. Them and their do good ways are so freaking boring!!!! Peyton should have Jenna do something really bad in the upcoming books, and make a really cool twist in the plot, cause Jenna and Peter need some spice in their lives.

Oh well there you go. Can't wait for the next books, and I hope that Leah comes back for a visit real soon, cause her a Miguel are cool!!!

    4 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2001-12-20

Don't Look Back is another fantastic read by Laura Peyton Roberts and I highly recommend it to teenagers.

As this is the finale to Clearwater Crossing, we see the lives of the eight members of Eight Prime evolving for the better. Miguel is headed for a bright future in Clearwater University, and has succeeded in his dream of providing a good home for his mother and sister. Leah is filled with bittersweet feelings as she prepares to attend her aspired college while also preparing to leave the town, friends and family that she loves. Peter, as the leader of Eight Prime, strives to lead the group as best as he can, and also strives to provide a warm and loving home for Jason. Jenna is full of satisfaction with her life at this moment, as she continues singing in the band and takes on the new responsibility of being the oldest Conrad sister living at home. Melanie has finally found the contentment and peace that she so desperately yearned for in the beginning of the series. She finally experiences the love of her father, of Jesse, and has managed to fully overcome the grief of her mother's death to look at life anew. She decides to attend the bible-study class that Peter invited her to, showing that she is willing to explore the doubts she faces about Christianity.

While Melanie's life makes a turn for the better, Jesse feels a sense of belonging in his family at last. Nicole also manages to deal with her low self-esteem and her concern with physical appearance. Still in shock over the fact that he has a girlfriend, Ben is no longer as ashamed of himself as before.

As you read this book, you will be filled with mixed emotions. A sense of happiness will fill you as the members of Eight Prime seem to be leading meaningful lives, while a feeling of disappointment will be felt as you realize this is the last book in the series.

However, one negative aspect of the book is that the problems faced by the different characters at the beginning of the series seemed to be solved at too fast a pace. This made it seem rather unrealistic. I wish the series would continue so that readers can find out more about how Eight Prime continue with their lives and how they cope with future problems. Loose ends could be tied up too!

5 out of 5 stars Not a typical children's book about the planets.......2002-03-07

Unlike many other books that focus on information about the specific entities that make up our solar system, this book expands that information in a unique way. In addition to limited information about the planets and the universe, and fairly extensive information about the sun, it includes information on the constellations, solar eclipses, telescopes, and the missions to the moon.

The information included presented in a way that makes this book appropriate for a wide age range of children. Its discussion of the sun is expanded to describe prominences, the meaning of light years and the Milky Way as well as our solar system's position in our galaxy.

The description of constellations is an overview only. The purpose of constellation is explained, but not how to find them.

The information on shooting stars, comets, solar eclipses and the phases of the moon are fairly detailed (for children). The illustrations for most of these are particularly good.

The pages covering telescopes which also covers several notable astronomers (Hipparchus, Newton & Galileo) are particularly good. Although the information is not extensive, it does cover enough detail to whet the appetite of a curious child.

The descriptions of the voyages to the moon are particularly good. The detail and words chosen are well done for young children, yet still convey the excitement of the events. Topics covered include the command module, rocket stages and even the path taken by Apollo 11 to the moon.

This sturdy board book has nice illustrations and excellent text. It's one my preschoolers request often and one that contains enough depth for them to learn more for years to come.

      5 out of 5 stars Hope renewed!.......2000-10-06

I love this book and have taken it to heart. It's a wonderful compendium of stories about people who married for the first time after 40. By providing "models" of experience the authors show how it really is possible to have what you want in your life, even if you're at an age where most people think there must be something wrong with you if you're not married yet. This book helps you move through the mental blocks or internalized projections that may be in the way of having the relationship you really want. I'm 44 and only recently have begun to feel that I'm really "ready" to be married, and I really could identify with those in the book who delayed marriage but woke up to how much they really wanted it in their 40s. I must also comment on how sensitively this book is written; it's free of psychological jargon and the authors clearly feel deeply about this subject. A very soulful and inspiring book. I highly recommend the first chapter on Choice vs. Chance for anyone who feels stalled in their "search" for the relationship they really want and needs to be reminded of the magic of synchronicity.
