Book Description
Men are right. The “relationship talk” does not help. Dr. Patricia Love’s and
Dr. Steven Stosny’s How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It
reveals the stunning truth about marital happiness:
Love is not about better communication.
It's about connection.
You'll never get a closer relationship
with your man by talking to him like you
talk to one of your girlfriends.
Male emotions are like women's sexuality:
you can't be too direct too quickly.
There are four ways to connect with a man:touch, activity, sex, routines.
Men want closer marriages just as much as women do,but not if they has to act like a woman.
Talking makes women move closer;
it makes men move away.
The secret of the silent male is this:
his wife supplies the meaning in his life.
The stunning truth about love is that talking doesn’t help.
Have you ever had this conversation with your spouse?
Wife: “Honey, we need to talk about us.”
Husband: “Do we have to?”
Drs. Patricia Love and Steven Stosny have studied this all-too-familiar dynamic between men and women and have reached a truly shocking conclusion. Even with the best of intentions, talking about your relationship doesn’t bring you together, and it will eventually drive you apart.
The reason for this is that underneath most couples’ fights, there is a biological difference at work. A woman’s vulnerability to fear and anxiety makes her draw closer, while a man’s subtle sensitivity to shame makes him pull away in response. This is why so many married couples fall into the archetypal roles of nagging wife/stonewalling husband, and why improving a marriage can’t happen through words.
How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It teaches couples how to get closer in ways that don’t require “trying to turn a man into a woman.” Rich in stories of couples who have turned their marriages around, and full of practical advice about the behaviors that make and break marriages, this essential guide will help couples find love beyond words.

A really good approach to helping marriage.......2007-09-22
This book was recommended by a friend. I liked it so well I bought copies for all five of my children (all married), and copies for some other people too. It has some very basic concepts well put. It is especially good for situations where there is reluctance to go to marriage counseling, showing that the individuals in the relationship can help the relationship better if they understand the challenges facing the other person.
Helpful Facts.......2007-06-27
As someone who is usually in some spiritual conversation about marriage and relationships, this book has been so helpful. The concrete differences between the sexes are important to know and not try to fix. The second half of the book starts out with compassion being the answer. It is the only answer.
I Love It. I gave it away and have to buy a new copy for myself
Required Reading.......2007-05-23
This is the best explanation of the differences of how men and women think. This should be required reading for ALL high schoolers. Absolute Required Reading for all couples comptemplating marriage !!!
A MUST for all married couples !!!
What great insights to improving your relationship.......2007-05-15
As a couple counsellor I have found the insights in this book the most refreshing information for years. It makes so much sense and is so simple yet so profound. anyone wanting to create a safer and more intimate relationship must read this book.
Very helpful book, also well-written.......2007-05-13
This book is very well-written and is very helpful for couples working on making their marriage better. Like all marriage books, there are some generalizations in this book, but overall the ideas expressed in this book are backed by research and the experience of the authors.
As a student completing his dual masters in marriage and family therapy and mental health counseling, and also as a husband, I found the book helpful and useful and it rang true for me in many ways. My wife also enjoyed the book as well, and found it mostly accurate and helpful.
Book Description
Should you sweat the small stuff?
Absolutely, says Stephen Young-especially when it comes to those critical behaviors that can make or break performance. The reason is simple: no matter what you think you're saying, your words, gestures, and tone of voice can actually communicate something entirely different.
Too often, negative micromessages undermine morale, business opportunities, and ultimately your organization. Micromessaging examines the nuanced behaviors that we all blindly use and react to in our dealings with others. Yet as Young points out, these micromessages can reveal a lot about our own-and our superiors'-biases and preconceived notions. Learning how to constructively address these behaviors can bring about positive change.
Young offers a common language for encouraging open discussion in the workplace, along with skills to identify and address familiar micromessages; tools for deploying microadvantages; and real-life workplace scenarios, self-assessments, and solutions that help readers interpret and alter ingrained behaviors and their effects. He delivers valuable information on
- Cruicial leadership skills and how to acquire them
- Universal workplace cultural issues
- How expectations affect the performance of others
- Ways to speak fairly, not falsely
- Techniques that eliminate group think
- How to reset the "filters" you use to "screen" others
Based on research from MIT, Young's approach has already helped numerous Fortune 500 clients, including Merck, Intel, Lockheed Martin, Starbucks, IBM, Boeing, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Cisco, and Raytheon to increase leadership effectiveness. With its proven wisdom, you can experience what so many business executives worldwide have discovered and make it a powerful part of your leadership skill set.

Micromessaging: Why Great leadership is beyond words.......2007-05-30
Great book. Common sense put into action!! I read it aloud to my wife while driving on vacation. She loved it also.
Insightful advice.......2007-04-20
Micromessages are those subtle - and sometimes not-so-subtle - nonverbal messages that people send through body language, tone of voice and the way they inflect words. Micromessages signal at an immediate gut level how people feel about each other. You can use nice words when speaking to other people, but if at the same time you inadvertently send out negative micromessages, those nonverbal signals will have a more enduring impact than anything you say. Managers, supervisors and other leaders should become avid students of their own facial expressions, styles of personal engagement, body language and other nonverbal communicative attributes. Then they should try to send positive micromessages, not harmful ones that breed resentment and undermine performance. This book is easy to read and understand, but we believe that it delivers an important lesson: Micromessages matter, so mind your unspoken communications. Those small signals have a large reverberation.
Great book on understanding business relationships.......2007-03-24
I bought this book to help me understand business or the way people interact in a business setting. As a middle manager of a small business that is now part of a big business (aka recently acquired), I have been struggling with change in management, management style and culture. What this book is helping me understand is the messages that come from people in authority and how it impacts the rank and file; and likewise how my own emotions, thoughts and feelings impact the people who report too me.
While I have not yet finished the book, it does have me hooked and thirsting for more. As a technologist it also helps bridge the communication gap between technology and business. Being exposed to this subject matter has already opened my eyes to the fact that management and leadership are two very seperate skills. I now understand the power of effective leadership and has given me new thought in developing my career.
Book Description
While showing how both evangelicals and liberals misread Scripture, a leading Bible scholar and Anglican bishop shows how to restore the Bible’s authority today for guiding the church through its many controversies.

The Last Word. N.T. Wright........2007-03-26
In this volume, N.T. Wright's two anchoring themes are (1) the authority of Christian canon, i.e., as a standard measure, and (2) the imperfection of our understanding of the canon, i.e., the importance of humility in cooperating with scripture's philology in finding its intent. Knowledge of scripture is, in many instances, permanently tentative (as is scientific knowledge) and proceeds along lines that are better recognized as being iterative and partial than immediate or whole. Christian humility and 'teachability' demands as much, as do the ubiquitous exegetical disputes and the inherent subtleties and mysteries of ancient texts whose impulsion was 'beyond' its human penmen. To paraphrase this view in my own clumsy way - "stop pretending you've got it all figured out and start studying so as to be taught, instead of 'studying' to support your delusions of final insights." With apologies to Wright for my paraphrase, I heartily agree with him. It's a bit interesting that Wright chose the title that he did; by it he can only mean that "the Last Word" is the final import of scripture, not that he, or anyone else, can provide a final interpretation or exposition of the Last Word.
Wright on the relationship of Christian scripture and Christian tradition: "The challenge of living with tradition is not so much, as in official Roman Catholic understandings, that one should let tradition and scripture flow together straightforwardly into a single stream, but that tradition should be allowed to be itself; that is, the living voice of the very human church as it struggles with scripture, sometimes misunderstanding it and sometimes gloriously getting it right. That is why the challenge comes fresh to each generation. Traditions tell us where we have come from. Scripture itself is a better guide as to where we should now be going." p 119
It is true that some of Wright's work is a kind of flash-point in some scholarly circles, Christian and otherwise -- too orthodox for some, too liberal for others, not Calvinist enough for the heavy-handed determinists, not Roman enough for the 'one true church' audience, and so forth. But all of this speaks to the level-headed carefulness of his theology and biblical scholarship. If, on some point(s) you find that you disagree with Wright, I hope that you can do so with the intellectual openness and spiritual humility that characterize this author; if you are a Bible-thumping know-it-all, then you need this book more than most of us do. Thank God for N.T. Wright.
A Concise Exposition of Anglican Theological Thinking.......2007-03-09
N. T. Wright continues to be a voice of centrist sense within the roil of contemporary Christian controversies. This clear, concise exposition of the traditional Anglican "via media" is a very useful primer, or refresher, on how Anglicans balance the threads of Scripture, Tradition, and human reason. The objective is to understand how to live out the Christian call, and how to understand timeless lessons in a rapidly changing world. I've loaned my copy to several friends across the Christian belief spectrum as a clear and fairly concise summary of how my branch of Christ's church lives in to our call.
A good but brief treatment on the authority of scripture.......2007-01-30
Tom Wright wrote an article "How can the bible be authoritative" for Vox Evangelica in 1991. This book flushes out the themes in more detail and provides some more historial context. The title might be a bit misleading since a "new understanding" could mean recovering an older understanding. My perspective is that the title is not as alarming as it sounds. What I have always appreciated about Tom Wright is that he is able defend his orthodox christian views using rigorous academic methods. Sure, he is often critized by both sides. So the conservative christians accuse him of not being fully orthodox, while the academics accuse him of compromising his rigor due to his personal faith. Regardless of one's theology position, this book should be a worthwhile read. A more detailed treatment is contained in "NT and the people of god". It is only in my second reading that I am appreciating and starting to understand the book. So for those of you who would like more depth, I would recommend "NT and the people of god". If you are interested in the subject of the authority of scripture, you might also be interested in reading more on narrative theology and the emerging/emergent church movement.
Happy reading.
Wright is Worth the Read!.......2007-01-24
Wright cuts through the noise in the North American biblical scholarship debate. He knocks the legs out from under "conservatives" and "liberals" and offers us a solid foundation of good hermeneutics. He explains why both "sides" are missing the mark and how we can get back on the right track. Good book!
Read Paul: In Fresh Perspective for a better glimpse into N.T. Wright's wonderful contributions and insights into New Testament scholarship.
A Bit Thin.......2007-01-12
Having read his thoroughly naratived approach in Jesus and the Victory of God I was expecting something more substanial. Given that most reading of the scriptures is first devotional and personal the corporate/hierarchical conclusion seemed lopsided.
Book Description
Beyond Words n (1.) Terms or names that point to the realm of mystery and depth that lies beyond our ordinary experience. (2.) The reality that is beyond even the power of beyond words to convey, and that can be known only by experiencing it for yourself.
"A word a day to keep the demons at bay." This is how Frederick Buechner likes to describe this witty and incisive dictionary. A daily devotional from one of today's greatest spiritual writers, Beyond Words offers 366 entries from Buechner's three alphabet books, Wishful Thinking, Peculiar Treasures, and Whistling in the Dark, including a new Introduction and nineteen new entries.
Providing definitions of both sacred and ordinary words, as well as biblical characters, Buechner unabashedly brings his fresh perspective to words, concepts, and characters we thought we understood. This is a great introduction to Buechner's work as well as a library staple for those already well versed in his writing. It is Buechner at his best. Whether readers find themselves tearful from a deeply moving insight or laughing out loud at an unexpected turn of phrase, they will always feel uplifted, illuminated, and enchanted by the wisdom of Frederick Buechner.

Frederick Keeps the Demons away by insightful, provactive, ideas! What poignant inspired 365 words for another year!
From the Intriguing...darkness, EZEKIEL, Gomer... to music,
mystery & MYSTICISM: Music is all about increasing ones's growth to listening! Mystery is about "Beginning with Words" as Robert Frost is Quoted: "We begin poetry with words that cause a lump to form in the throat." Mysticism is the place for beginning of Religions!
"A popular view has it that what Ezekiel realy saw were Flying Saucers! Then all of a sudden from way up in the air his Voice came down... He thought he'd seen the Glory of GOD!"
After descibing the Vision of DRY BONES, "Ezekiel heard the Voice asking him to tell the ISRAELITES--with GOD in the wings--even though it would be curtains For Sure, the way they were heading... the curtains that goes down in New Haven is also the curtain that goes up on the marvelous new rewrite that hits BROADWAY like a ton of bricks!
As far as is known, nobody's ever stepped out of a UFO and made a statement like that!" All this says what an imaginative creative writer is our neat friend, Fredric the Great! from Retired Chaplain-Rabbi Fred-E Hood
A Welcome Compilation.......2004-07-07
Buechner has done something that will be taken two different ways: he has either fallen into the self-aggrandizing trap of repackaging "old stuff" for new potential market, or has (as I prefer to think) made more accessible three wonderful works through the convenience of a single cover. These gems are alternately thought-provoking, humorous, spiritual, and wonderfully human.
Anyone who is familiar with Buechner's autobiographical musings (or the way they are woven into his novel characters) will recognize this as variation on a theme, an art at which Buechner is master. And for the market-driven pragmatists of the world...what a great gift idea!

Old Dog can learn new tricks.......2005-07-17
All my 50 years I was convinced i could not draw and I was not artistic. This book proved me wrong. Quickly my intuitive mind grasped the concepts and I started drawing. Folks comment all the time how long I have been drawing. Their jaws drop when I tell them for only a year. This book's style was instrumental in making it easy to enjoy drawing.
Surpass your colleagues and engage other in the room.......2004-02-20
If you are spending 2 hours to make the perfect PowerPoint, this book gives you the confidence to make your own drawings, pictorals, and basic diagrams on any whiteboard or paper easel. I was a statitican (so you know I can't draw) but often needed to work out ideas of my own and in groups. The simple pictures learned in this book helps everyone understand the discussion that's going on. Connect words, ideas, and your audience with esy to draw colorful pictograms of your ideas.
Not sure if you can draw, the publishers sample made me get the book.

Instant Gratification.......2002-04-03
All these reviewers are right. I opened the book and within 30 seconds i drew the first picture which looked EXACTLY like the one in the book. I have spent hundreds of dollars on books on drawing - all wasted. The beauty of this book is that every concept is applied instantly and transferred to your brain subliminally.
Exhaustive and fun too.......2001-06-26
Excellent guide for communicating concepts, ideas, etc.

I absolutely love this book!! I couldn't even draw good stick people. Now, watch out!!! I am going to add drawings to my currently "boring corporate" driven lessons and make them colorful and fun!!!

Customer Reviews:
Straightforward and innovative resource.......2007-09-11
This book is a great resource for anyone in business, not just marketing. Perfect for internet entrepreneurs and real estate agents too.
Learn how to talk with customers instead of at them........2007-08-04
Conversational marketing is really a simple concept and one that's been around since people started conversing. However, marketing, PR and advertising departments, especially in larger businesses, don't think conversationally. That's a problem, because customers want conversation, not the "party line." Lois Kelly offers a spot on solution--
"Marketing has traditionally been more like a manufacturing operation, producing advertisements, Web sites, brochures, campaigns, and press releases. Reframed as a service, however, marketing gains even more value through the processes of listening advising, explaining, and teaching." (p. 155)
Companies need to reshape their entire approach to communication to have any hope of influencing today's customers. That entails changing mindsets, job responsibilities, interdepartmental relationships and customer interaction--tough stuff.
The great value of "Beyond Buzz" is that it explains how large organizations can reorganize and reorient themselves to be conversational. Kelly has a lot of first-hand experience working with firms that successfully made the change, and with some that didn't. Her ideas and transformative techniques are not merely theories, they are tried and true. Worthwhile reading for business owners, leaders, and top level marketing, PR, advertising and sales execs.
worth reading twice.......2007-07-09
I just re-read this book and not only is it good reading, but great advice for moving forward in the ever changing world of technology. It reminds us that word of mouth is still one of the most important marketing tools, even if it is happening electronically these days. I particularly liked Chapter 5 - Nine Themes That Always Get People Talking. It's fun; it's smart; and it works. I've been using some of the strategies outlined since the moment I finished the book.

An important addition to any business library........2007-06-17
BEYOND BUZZ: THE NEXT GENERATION OF WORD-OF-MOUTH MARKETING is PR at its best: a discussion of how more effective word-of-mouth 'buzz' is generated to drive sales not from an advertising standpoint, but from personal experiences shared to create product interest and excitement. Lois Kelly is a branding specialist who believes making via 'buzz' is fostered by two-way communication with customers: a give-and-take which actually refines and defines desirable products. BEYOND BUZZ uses case studies of organizations that have mastered 'conversational marketing' to great success, and makes for an important addition to any business library.

There are an incredible number of resources and ideas in this book. It will change the way you think about marketing.
Book Description
The phenomena discussed by the authors range from synthetic compounding in English to agreement alternations in Arabic and complementizer agreement in dialects of Dutch. Their exposition combines insights from lexicalism and distributed morphology, and is expressed in terms accessible to scholars and advanced students. - unique exploration of interfaces of morphology with syntax and phonology - wide empirical scope with many new observations - theoretically innovative and important - accessible to students with chapters designed for use in teaching
Book Description
Animals and nature can act as teachers and guides, send warnings of impending danger, or simply make life more joyous. More profoundly, intuitive bonds with the natural world can foster life-altering changes and spiritual redirection. Beyond Words describes what people experience when they connect intuitively with animals and nature. In her first book, Learning Their Language, Marta Williams taught readers how to make this connection; here she explores how life changes once they do. Williams describes a photographer who is healed by dolphins in the waters off Hawaii, how a rottweiler helps her female companion seek the assistance she needs, and how young Neil and his horse Feste together learned about life, death, and loyalty. Easy-to-follow exercises and practices help readers experience these same types of communication.
Customer Reviews:
Unconvinced? Read this book and see .......2006-11-27
In this book Marta Williams carries forward the concepts described in Learning Their Language. She gives many case histories, examples of how intuitive communication has been critical in the lives of the animals whose cases are described. This is both fascinating and moving. The implications are unnerving, but worth incorporating into your world view.
TALKING WITH ANIMALS.......2006-11-10
This book was so interesting that I read it in two sessions. Parts were funny and parts were sad, but it was all well done and believable. Makes me want to sit right down and learn how to do this myself. Money well spent.
The real deal!!!.......2005-11-02
Probably most folks who will look at this book are already believers in animal communication but even for those like me who are, there is an abundance of profound and amazingly touching anecdotes in it.
My wife and I have called on Marta for help with our cats on several occasions with great success. As a direct result of reading her previous book we can now often communicate directly with them ourselves. This new book is truely a gem and whichever book you read first, you will likely end up wanting to get the other as well! They are easy to read and understand, and make great gifts! Even children who are too young to be able to read on them on their own can learn to communicate with animals; actually learn more easily than adults.
Even if you don't have a live-in companion, animals are all around us and they love it when you make deeper contact with them. If you love animals, this book is a must have!
For All Animal Lovers!.......2005-10-05
Author Marti Williams takes us on a wonderful journey as she shares countless stories of animals interacting with humans. In this book she tells of communication between many animals and humans. In these communications the animals; dogs, cats, horses, etc. share their feelings, likes, dislikes, worries and such with the person they are communicating with. Interesting! She also gives accounts where lost pets are found, and emotional problems are solved.
I am an animal lover so this book definitely touched a soft spot in my heart. I am not sure that I fully agree with how she communicates with the animals and nature, but I definitely know that everything living share a common bond. If what she is doing helps even one animal to have a better life, I say Amen and thank you to her! This certainly is a very well written book with some wonderful stories and information that I feel will help and touch many hearts along the way. Animal lovers and pet owners will appreciate this read and find it very beneficial.
Interesting Stories.......2005-09-19
Marta shares many interesting stories in this followup to Learning Their Language. Understanding your pet is so important, and the more we can learn about and develop positive interactive communication signals the stronger will be the bond we share with our furry family members. Being "in-touch" with
your pet is an important part of enhancing the human-animal bond, and a critical part of a successful holistic health care program. Those clients whose patients I am proud to treat who are most in-tune with their pets have the greatest successes with both preventing and treating diseases.
