5 out of 5 stars My first Martha Stewart book.......2002-12-07

I have used many of these projects and loved it. The ribbon trays I have given as gifts were well received, and once I got the glass cut, were just gorgeous. I found baskets on sale one day, and they just all came together, not as expensive as I thought. I think the ribbon cost the most, but still, a really great gift for not a lot of money in my case. Recipes, of course, and things like candlemaking are showcased here. So glad I bought it!

5 out of 5 stars I liked it.......2002-03-01

This book taught me the best way to wrap gifts.

I am usually a Martha fan but I see these books of hers as an attempt to just suck more money out of us. Almost everything in this book can be found in past issues of her magazine. If I would have known that I would have went to the library and decided what was best myself.I believe all of her books are this way---I mean samples from her show and magazine. Nothing new or surprising.

5 out of 5 stars Make your Christmas one "from the heart"........1996-12-09

Martha Stewart presents some of the most beautiful and creative ideas to make Chirstmas special. Her gift and wrapping ideas allow for the kind of creativity that will make each gift truly special and "from the heart".The decorating ideas she presents are truly beautiful and have given rise to many new holiday traditions in our home and in the homes of the many friends that have borrowed this book from me. The fact that she provides the names and addresses of the mail order houses she gets her supplies from for all of the wonderful things she shows in the book is a god-send.

Martha Stewart's Christmas remains a classic cooking and decorating guide for the Christmas season. The book can be viewed as an elaborate timeline for preparing for December 25--indeed, Martha claims the book was written and photographed in "real time" from the day after Thanksgiving through Christmas Day. Along the way, Martha teaches you how to make plum pudding, 24 different types of cookies, and a holiday party menu featuring cassoulet for 100. For Christmas Day dinner, a towering croquembouche is perhaps the finest culinary feature of the menu, which features roast ducklings with wild rice, chestnut, and cranberry dressing. Martha also provides tips on decorating trees, making ornaments, gift-wrapping papers, and making beautiful wreaths and topiaries. There's even advice on making up gift baskets of the cookies, conserves, and puddings that you've created yourself. Martha herself admits that "it's true, we did get carried away"--she creates an elaborate gingerbread mansion--but most of the recipes and crafts are easy to follow and produce great results. Martha Stewart's Christmas is a real gift. C.B. Delaney

1 out of 5 stars Shallow book like the author.......2003-01-14

There are better Christmas books on decorating and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars The most beautiful christmas book!.......2002-12-17

I can see this book is not new. It is to me, and I find is very inpirational! I use it every year for Christmas, for getting the house ready, for baking, for decorating and setting the tables, for ideas on how to use my plates, bowls and dishes in different ways, for altering things I already own into new settings -
I do own a few of her C-mas books, this is by far the best one. If you celebrate this holiday - or just want to arrange a beautiful winter feast, you will not be sorry to own this book!(I use it as gifts for friends, and have already bought three..)

4 out of 5 stars Lovely book.......2002-02-18

I loved the 'feel' of this book, very festive. The presentation is beautiful.
What disappointed me a little was that there was no pattern for the gingerbread mansion that was featured in the book, which was the main reason I bought it. It's a little too easy for me to just be told to 'use your imagination' and 'the possibilities are endless'. I expected more!
Other than that, it is a very nice addition to my book collection with timeless ideas and inspirations, or just to browse through when christmas season comes around.

4 out of 5 stars Something for every ability and interest level.......2001-12-10

Yesterday I made Noel Nut Balls and the chocolate-dipped almond cookies for the fifth or sixth Christmas in a row, and chances are I'll make several of the other recipes before the end of the holidays. The cookie recipes are easy to follow, guaranteed to please and the cookies themselves can be frozen for weeks without any change in texture, appearance or flavor. However, I can't imagine many busy people whipping up the cassoulet or even the fruitcake unless they are experienced cooks who can confidently evaluate and execute rather expensive (in terms of ingredients) recipes.
The craft and gift ideas run the range from easy and very rewarding (such as making your own wrapping paper, which turns out to be a great activity to do with children-- and those gold and coppery designs look sensational under the tree) to the fantastical...like using a jeweller's drill to make holes in nuts for decorative purposes. Still, this is a book full of ideas for holiday activities and creations for people with the full range of abilities and available time and it really is enjoyable to read and to look through.
I am buying a second copy because the first has literally fallen apart. This is the second Martha Stewart book to have broken into pieces (Entertaining did, as well) and I do question the quality of binding.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Useful Christmas Book I've Found.......2000-01-05

I adore Martha Stewart. She's a terrific teacher and this is absolutely the best Christmas "idea" book I've ever read. I love the recipes and photos. It's a book I will treasure and one I will use over and over again. Thank you, Martha!

Book Description

If the words “classic Christmas” make images of Christmas cactus, fruitcake, and roast turkey dance in your head, then Classic Crafts and Recipes for the Holidays will make all of your yuletide dreams come true.

Arranged in ten chapters with such names as “Cranberries,” “Nuts,” “Citrus,” “Leaves,” and “Pinecones,” this festive compendium of holiday ideas and recipes is certain to show you how to make every Christmas one to remember. 5 out of 5 stars A Very Beautiful Book.......2005-08-12

The photographs in this book are absolutely stunning. You could set it on your coffee table for guests to look through, and even if they don't know a Meyer lemon from a tangelo, they'll take great pleasure in looking through this book (they'll learn something, too). Everything is lovingly laid out, photographed and eloquently described. Buy the hardcover edition, because you'll want to keep it for a long time.

5 out of 5 stars A great Holiday Treasure - and gift.......2001-12-10

Martha's Holiday book this really touched my heart. My mom has always grown Amaryllis and Christmas Cactus, chapters 4 & 5 really were a delightful surprise. I now know the Christmas Cactus the I have is called "White Christmas". When I told my mom about the charts, she was so interested in the book (she lives in Ohio and we live in Fl.) that I am immediately sending her one for Christmas. My son is a personal chef - so we all love to cook and I love to decorate. The pictures are great as usual, but I think I like the charts about the topic in each chapter. They are beautiful and informative. It was great to see the different types of pine cones and citrus. The best part is that even if you don't use these ideas during the holidays - the things you have learned will be useful all year and will be great to share with friends and family.
Some items may have been in Martha Stewart Living - that's great that the special ideas have been put in this holiday book to keep and treasure. (I don't keep every magazine - I will treasure this book). Thanks again to Martha!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Lots of reprints from the magazine.......2001-09-21

You know this going in, but there arent' as many really neat "new" things as the last books. More biscotti, and a lot of good uses for the endless bags of cranberries in the back of my freezer. I'll start on those for Christmas about November 1, I think. If you like Martha, this is the fifth in the series, but there wasn't anything besides the cranberry stuff that really "grabbed" me. Still, it's great to continue your collection.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great little Christmas book.......2004-12-13

After Martha Stewart went to prison, I guessed that perhaps the price of her books would go down due to lack of demand for them.
I bought two of these books as Christmas gifts for relatives, because I have always admired her work and presentation qualities. In ordering them as gifts, considering her past work, I felt safe in assuming that my relatives would be pleased with them. They were! I know I got two fantastic bargains. I have heard a lot of negative things about Stewart as a person, but her work is top-rate regardless of her personality traits. Even if you never make any of the recipes, the pictures are great to look at and the recipes are fun to read.

5 out of 5 stars Martha the great.......2004-11-11

If the cookie crumbles, Martha will make pie crust crumbs out of it, just as she is doing in prison (COUGH). Her recipes are wonderful, her holiday spirit contagious...what can you say about a woman who bakes with Elmo and Miss Piggy for her Christmas specials?

Martha's recipes are classic and yet innovative, a must for your holiday baking shelf.

5 out of 5 stars This book MUST be in your cookbook collection!.......2003-10-28

I have read this newly-published cookbook from cover to cover today and I LOVE IT! It's not surprising Martha Stewart could put together a collection of recipes representing the Christmas holiday. Some cookbooks only focus on Christmas cookies or only Thanksgiving, but this cookbook highlights sophisticated recipes from drinks (I hadn't seen a Ramos Gin Fizz in a cookbook ever!) to entrees and of course, desserts. Sure, there are only so many things you can do with cranberries, chestnuts, hazelnuts, and pumpkins, but these are not tired, redone recipes just so she could publish yet another cookbook. This book is polished, much like the format of her h'ors d'oeuvres book. Beautiful photographs, great recipes. Anyone who loves cooking during the Christmas holidays, and not just bake cookies, will definitely love this cookbook!

What would the holidays be without a fresh book from Martha Stewart? Remarkably, she manages to come up with something new every year. Decorating for the Holidays shows off some amazing, almost lifelike snow figures of greenery-clothed polar bears, a full-skirted girl and her lively dog decorating a live tree, and a sharp-nosed, skinny Santa leading a lone reindeer across a field. From there, Martha moves on to instructions for fairly standard, though lovely, wired greenery and fruit wreaths and swags; a set of velvet stockings trimmed in gold and silver ribbon; satin balls and mini-stockings of felt for the tree, and finally to the kind of beautiful beaded ornament that makes it worthwhile to buy the book long before December. The heirloom beaded wreath is utterly gorgeous, the kind of craft project that can consume many months, yet will be enjoyed for years. Martha never neglects edible treats, and offers as a family project a Gothic gingerbread mansion and gingerbread snowflakes and animals for the tree. Don't worry, they'll keep for a while--and she does warn that "gingerbread is meant to be eaten, so be sure to make an extra batch or two." The remainder of the book is dedicated to tabletop ornaments, like silvered pine cones and topiary fruit trees, and to more seductive treats: tuile cookies in the shape of holly leaves, chocolate petits fours, a gingerbread Yule log filled with a creamy semifreddo mixture, and tiny angel-food cakes cut in the shape of stars and piled up on dessert plates. Transitory though the festive season may be, creating beautiful and tasty things to help celebrate it is one of its greatest pleasures. --Barrie Trinkle

4 out of 5 stars my favorite of Martha Stewart.......2007-03-12

I first found this book in my local library & checked it out. I absolutely love it! The pictures are incredible & there are how-to's. There is something that everyone would like in it, unless of course your a bah-humbugger. I start thinking about holiday decor in September because I love it so much & this book is a great idea sparker.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Christmas Book!.......2007-01-06

I loved the many gorgeous photos in this book. It had great directions for all the crafts. The pictures are wonderful for getting ideas for your own house. It is my favorite Christmas idea boook!

4 out of 5 stars It's Classic Martha!.......2002-12-30

Even if you aren't a true fan of Martha, you will enjoy her book filled with decorating and crafting ideas that you can either incorporate into your own traditions or expound upon to revise them to your personal taste.

It's a great book for your crafting collection!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty to look at !.......2001-11-30

I have found that Martha Stewart books are to be viewed rather than used as a basis for trying to make anything because her instructions and recipes are often convoluted and/or incorrect. I just do not understand why, with her vast resources, Martha does not hire better and more thorough editors and testers.

So now I just look at her books for the visual pleasure they bring me! That way I avoid any frustration associated with implementation. And this one gave me lots of beautiful things to look at: the fruit wreath, the silvery pine cones, the beautifully done petits fours, the handmade ornaments, the gorgeous cookies.

Even if the directions were perfectly clear, I know I still would not make many of these things...but a gal can dream, can't she?

4 out of 5 stars Pretty neat stuff in here!.......2001-09-21

Although, like the rest of the "Christmas with Martha Stewart" books, they are republished features from the magazine, this one is pretty good. You do not have to use red and green every year; Silver, white, and even pastel colors can be used festively. I love the neat snowman article; unfortunately, here in Houston, we don't get much snow! Cookies. . .oh, I licked my lips over the snowflake wafers, but I've never made them.

Book Description

Amid the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, the words and tunes of Christmas carols run through our heads, cheering us on and reminding us of the joys of celebrating with friends and family. These beloved songs are the theme for this book, a wonderful collection of craft, cooking, and decorating ideas. The fun starts with “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” a project based on the memorable gifts presented in the song. “Deck the Halls” focuses on using holly in unusual centerpieces and decorations. And whether they listen to Bing Crosby crooning in the background or create their own chorus, families will enjoy preparing a classic “White Christmas” aglow with white decorations and featuring white foods. As always, color photographs and clear directions make every project a joy to create.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars decking the halls, Martha style.......2003-08-24

The beauty of this book is in the colors; celebrating the Christmas spirit with exquisite combinations of creamy winter whites, blues, and golden yellows.
The ideas for ornaments, wreaths, and ingenuous ways to wrap money as a gift, are not slap-dash "quickies", but designs for objects that would be kept and enjoyed for many seasons to come. Standouts include the gorgeous Damask stockings, made from vintage fabrics, the wonderful fruit wreath in warm pastels, and my favorite, the "Ladies dancing and lords a-leaping" strung across the fireplace.

The recipes are sumptuous and shown in elegant settings, and very special is the sheet music that has the look of antique reproductions, of many familiar carols.
In the back of the volume there are templates for the many craft objects in the book, making the construction of them simpler, though you will obviously need a scanner and printer if you want to vary the size of the items, and many look like one would want to enlarge them.
As one would expect from Martha, the photography and layout is excellent, with thick, glossy pages. Even if one does not follow the patterns or recipes to the letter, it is a good "idea" book, and it's strength is its subtle color palette, used to great effect.

1 out of 5 stars Too Hard To Make The Crafts.......2003-01-08

I tried a few and it took hours to do. I guess I need the staff she has on her show. I think you can do better.

5 out of 5 stars You'll never fake your way through carols again!!!.......2002-10-30

Though the piano music is not useful for me (don't have a piano), I like seeing the acutal words to the Christmas songs, and believe their presentation in the book, with burnished corners and pretty fonts, greatly enhances the product. As for the crafts that go with these traditional songs, they are a joy to behold, and not all that difficult or time consuming to make.

Martha's books are by far better a product than her "By Mail" or "Catalogue for Living" kits, so if you're interested in putting out some money to have beautifully elegant Christmas decorations like her own, go with the book and assemble your own materials.

5 out of 5 stars Great Christmas Book.......2002-10-23

I think this is such a great book if you're trying to decorate your home for Christmas without spending a fortune, which is important, especially when you're a young wife like me! (It takes a little more time to make stuff, but who really wants store-bought decorations anyway? It seems to mean more when you make it yourself.) Some of the recipes are a little tricky, but they look beautiful when their done and are great for entertaining. The crafts are mostly very simple and fun. Fabulous book!

Martha Stewart's fans look to her to provide a sense of what's possible with unlimited taste and plenty of decorating funds, and certainly no one else does Christmas with such flair. Martha's Christmas feast may seem a bit over the top, with silver-leaved fruit at each place setting, crystal decanters of French dessert wines, and cake stands holding more decorations, but it photographs nicely--and, of course, the food looks great. There's also an easier New Year's Day party suggestion that will appeal to more casual party-givers. Martha's signature is the elegant simplicity of her decorative concepts, and this book's strength is its easy instructions for making wonderful wreaths, tree ornaments, and gift wrappings. The instructions for making aluminum snowflakes may alone be worth the price of the book.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars What's with the pastels?.......1999-08-20

I am a Martha Stewart fan, but this book disturbed me with its creepy pastels and white motif that pervaded the book. This sucked the Christmas spirit right out of me. I do yearn for the deep rich colors and and old money feel that were the Martha of yore. Now everything is post-divorce bright minimalist.

2 out of 5 stars A rehash of past magazines.......1998-08-31

If you subscribe to the magazine you will be very disappointed. Most of the projects are articles directly out of the past couple years' Winter issues. If you don't subscribe, you will enjoy the book. It's a scam for true Martha devotees.

1 out of 5 stars Why is the cover so ugly?.......1998-07-28

ALl I have to say about this book is one thing: It's a shame an art-driven publisher like Clarkson Potter would allow an ugly cover like this to bear their logo. Obvious last-minute slap job of magazine scrap pieces. What a waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars I can't imagine the holidays without it!.......1998-03-20

What would Christmas be without Martha Stewart? I can't imagine. This book covers Christmas in every stage from planning a month before to enjoying the big day. Everything is mapped out in accessible detail. The finished products look so "Martha Stewart," yet they are so simple to make, especially the folded paper stars, boxes of Swiss meringue,(which are spectacular) and the felt bags. My book is well worn and I find myself reaching for it almost monthly. The Lime Meringue Tart recipe alone is worth the price of the book!

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Christmas how to,elegant and easy!.......1998-03-15

Martha introduced (or re-introduced) all of us, to the beauty of making it at home. From soup to ornaments, nothing is missed! Martha shows the world how easy things can be, if we just take the time. Hers is a classic simplicity that says "you are home!"

4 out of 5 stars Another Martha Classic!.......2002-12-30

Here's another Martha book for the collection! With all the ideas and beautiful pictures, it's a book that sure to inspire most to creating beautiful tables and decorations for your own spectacular party!

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre for Martha.......2000-11-03

In this month's (Nov. 2000) issue of ************************, Martha's traditional opening letter proudly describes the way she gave a presentation to potential stockholders about "spreading our costs of creating fresh and timely and evergreen content." What that means for us, Martha's consumptive public, is increasingly recycled content, which is unfortunately the case in this book.

While previous Holiday books have also consisted of compilations of recipes and projects from the magazine, they were richly useful and well-organized. This book doesn't even bother to reformat the original content. The book is divided into three parts - "The Parties," "The Projects," and "The Recipes." So, "The Parties," are basically reprinted articles from the magazine in their original "story" form, whose recipes are inconveniently clustered at the back. Of course, the quality of the recipes is high - included in this book are my favorite cookie recipe ever (Torie's Oatmeal cookies), and you'll be interested in the menus if you're thinking of making crown roast or roast goose this year. "Party plan" timelines are also included. However, I see no real reason to buy this book if you've subscribed to the magazine for a few years, or what advantage this book has over the newly released compilation of MSL recipes.

"The Projects" section's obvious intended highlight is the creation of the candy decorations featured on the cover. People with children might be interested in this, as there is a menu devoted to accompany a "Candy Craft Party with Kids," with the quintessentially traditional peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches, mac and cheese, little pigs-in-blankets, and cocoa with candy canes. Other projects, like ideas for giveaways, are skimpily represented.

On the whole, I am a great fan of Martha's, but I find previous Holiday books, such as "Christmas with Martha Stewart Living," or "Handmade Christmas" more charming.
