Product Description
The focus of Getting Started: Reculturing Schools to Become Professional Learning Communities is answering the most common question posed by schools seeking to start their transformation into professional learning communities: Where do we begin? In the Introduction, the authors present the PLC concept, making the book accessible to those who have not yet read Professional Learning Communities at Work and providing a review of the framework for those who have. The main focus of the Introduction is that PLC is not a cookie-cutter approach, but rather a process that can be complex and non-linear. The book provides the reader access to a solid conceptual framework and concrete illustrations of how schools operate when they are functioning as PLCs, as well as to assessments for determining the effectiveness of their efforts.

The Best Hope for Public Schools.......2007-06-26
As a public school teacher and teacher trainer I feel strongly that the best reform schools can make is involving teachers and administrators in professional conversations as colleagues about teaching and learning. This book is a very good "how to do it" manual.
Very good book for college class..........2007-05-10
I needed this book for a college class. The price of the book was very reasonable and I was quite pleasantly surprised that the book was actually interesting. This is one book that I plan to keep and not sell back to the school. I think the book will be a good resource even after I've finished my degree work.
Golden Dancer.......2006-09-22
In the movie Inherit the Wind, the story of Golden Dancer is related to the audience. Golden Dancer was a beautiful and expensive wooden rocking horse that a family bought for its child after saving for it. The first time the child rode the horse, it collapsed as the wood was rotten to the core; so, is the DuFour premise as found on page 37. His conclusion that all students can achieve at the same level (learn specified topics) is asinine. He argues that all that is needed for struggling students is more time and support. He refuses to take into account intelligence and student effort (responsibility) in his equation. If his premise has any chance of coming true, teachers will have to dumb down what they teach to the lowest common denominator. Additionally, he and his colleagues lump all "traditional schools" into the same problem heap. His approach is simplistic and insulting. I would give this book zero stars, but that is not an option.

Excellent How-To run a coaching business.......2007-02-25
If you want to get into the details on how to set up and run a coaching business, whether personal or executive coaching, this book tells you how. It walks you through the set up to full running. Highly recommended.
It does not cover how to be a coach. This is the business side of the coaching business.
GOOD BOOK.......2007-01-13
But before you consider coaching, YOU must ask yourself if your life and career are exactly as you want them to be before you go and work with other people. Remember: most people out there are only settling for second best instead of going to fulfill their true fantasies! ARE YOU ONE OF THEM???? I WAS!
A "Must Have" for coaches in their first years of practice.......2006-11-17
A terrific combination of comprehensive business planning, sales and marketing frameworks; practical action steps and real data to back up the advice. The book guides you through all the key steps required to succeed in this challenging professional services business.
Everyone starting an executive or life coaching practice should grab this book and read -- and reread -- each one of the book's 356 pages.
Excellent tips on establishing & growing your coaching business.......2006-04-19
Note that this is NOT a book about how to coach. This is a great resource for someone who is looking for a well structured set of tips on how to establish a new coaching practice. It is also a great reference for experienced coaches to dip into. The networking and marketing sections are particularly useful. Experienced coaches will likely find some new ideas, but may get more value by being reminded of techniques that already knew about but have just forgotten to implement...
The book follows a logical progression for a new coach.
- What type of coaching you should focus on and why (business vs personal coaching)
- Which markets to target
- Planning - financial & marketing
- Networking - first impressions, relationships & referrals
- Finding your first clients
- Marketing tips & mistakes
- Internet marketing
- Traits & techniques of very successful coaches
There's also a section focusing on individuals from a professionally regulated field, such as psychology or counseling, who are considering transitioning to coaching.
I enjoyed the style of the book, which is quite "checklist" oriented. As someone who makes lists for everything, it very was easy for me to digest. More importantly is that it's a book that I continue to pick up and reference as it's so easy to dip into. Nicely laid out.
I also like the mini-interviews with successful coaches (usually just a page or so) providing tips & perspectives from growing their own businesses.
As a nuts and bolts description of how to operate & grow a coaching business, you can't go wrong with this book. Look elsewhere if you need a resource for developing coaching skills & techniques.
Highly favorable.......2006-02-20
This book will be my coaching "Bible!" It is well-written and full of invaluable guidance for launching and sustaining a profitable coaching practice.

Getting Started With Neurofeedback.......2007-08-17
I'm glad someone recommended this book to me before I took my first week-long training seminar in neurofeedback. It gave me a broad overview of the field and familiarized me with terminology, concepts and graphs so that I was "illuminated" rather than overwhelmed by my first seminar.
Limited usefulness.......2007-02-13
I had bought this book with high hopes based on the reviews and description. Make no mistake, this is a user's manual for several types of specific equipment (EEG-type) with very little background on how to interpret the readings or, more generally, on the various aspects of the neurofeedback field, or other methods of neurofeedback. This is a book by a pratitioner for a starting practitioner (dealing with how to set-up electrodes, how to read charts, a summary of a couple dated EEG systems, and how to choose an office space).
It does NOT cover in any detail theory or discuss latest research. Even as a reference for equipment/setup a quick internet search revealed several much more advanced systems available that were not even mentioned by the book. The book references DOS-based systems and alludes to Windows based systems.
If you are starting a business in this area and already have a firm grasp on the fundamnetals of this field then perhaps this book MIGHT be helpful, but anyone looking for an in-depth treatement of the wide range of neurofeedback techniques and/or comprehensive treatment of brain physiology/activity under different conditions should steer clear of this book - you will be disappointed. I am just glad Amamzon refunded my money.
Excellent Intro to Neurofeedback.......2005-08-25
This is the latest book on neurofeedback and reports the state of the art as of 2005. The author takes the basic protocols used by the majority of the field and then integrates qEEG, one of the fastest growing approaches to neurofeedback. Another reviewer calls qEEG "outdated." This is an outrageous, misleading statement, at best. qEEG IS controversial and not all practitioners use it. My own opinion on qEEG is that it is very often useful and sometimes essential, partifcularly for traumatic brain injury, as the book states, but not always necessary. I also believe that non-qEEG approaches can be very effective. But suggesting that qEEG outdated is, just plain wrong.
This book provides a wide range of different perspectives at a very affordable price, offering the entry level and novice practitioner of neurofeedback a wealth of state of the art information. Any practitioner getting started with neurofeedback would be advised to invest in this book. Rob Kall, organizer of the Futurehealth Winter Brain Meeting, world's largest neurofeedback meeting and editor/executive producer of the Introduction to EEG Biofeedback/ Neurofeedback Foundations Course DVD set (available on amazon) Another book worth checking out is the Neurofeedback book by Lynda and Michael Thompson.
OK from an historical point of view.......2005-08-24
The book is well done, clear and a comprehensive introduction to neurofeedback. I enjoyed reading (studying) it. I must say I mostly appreciated it from an historical point of view though. It describes the old way of doing neurofeedback -- still much in use -- and for instance doesn't mention that qEEG as a basis for neurofeedback has been outdated for several years now. Unfortunately there are no books detailing the more recent neurofeedback tools...
Good intro book.......2005-07-30
Excellent overview of a field that is growing. I started out in biofeedback but had been out of it for 20 years. Went to a workshop reviewing the latest in QEEG and neurofeedback, so I wanted to learn more. This book has given me a good sense of what I will need to do to get back into this area of treatment and analysis.

A Must Have.......2007-09-23
Highly recommended for anyone interested Electronics (Engieering). Nice, neat handwriting and easy to understand drawings.
Man it couldn't be explained better..........2007-09-05
I wanted to learn electronics. My dad is an electrician and I always wanted to know more. This was the first book I bought, and I struck GOLD. Forrest Mims is a name that sounded familiar and I found out later that my Dad buys any books he finds written by Mr. Mims. Young or Old - this book is very easy to understand and has alot of fun projects that anyone can build. I couldn't be happier with this book.
Great book.......2007-08-11
For beginners it is a very good book, very easy to understand the basic electronics concepts.
I have many books from Forrest Mims and for me that english is not my first language I do not have problems to understand the text.
The price could be better, but value is great.
It is an average beginning electronics book.......2007-08-08
I wanted to learn electronics but I ended up being frustrated. Almost every beginning level electronics book explains 'what' resistors, capacitors, diodes, and other electronic components are and how they work. However, they all fall short of explaining 'why' these components are found in any particular electronic circuit. This book is no different.
I can look at a schematic and build what I see, but I have no idea why the circuit was designed the way it was designed. WHY does a capacitor need to be placed between this IC pin and that component? I believe my lack of knowledge is a result of not yet finding the right book to give me that knowledge. Mim's book gave me some of the 'what' but is sorely lacking on the 'why'. Unfortunately most beginning electronics books suffer from the same problem.
Great Book for Beginners.......2007-06-15
I've been in electronics for over 25 years and to this day I recommend this book when someone ask, "How do you get started"? The beauty of this book is the visual representation of concepts that can seem complex to a beginner. You get just enough information to grasp the theory but not the math that so many electronic books use to bog down a beginner. In fact if you really grasp what Mr. Mimms is showing before you start your math exploration of electricity and electronics theory you will have a much better foundation. At the same time if you have nothing more than this book you could learn the concept of repairing existing equipment or putting together projects by following along especially if you had someone that could provide assistance.

Thompson's guide to SUSE 9.2, Training Manual.......2007-09-19
Good manual with quite a few typos. WEB site did not have corrections. You must use the distro that comes with the book or you will not get the desired results from the exercises. Even still the typos will leave you scratching your head in some cases. This is a Junior College class manual and I am pleased with it and the past Thompsom training guides that I have been exposed to. Price is a little steep.
Not for beginners.......2007-09-15
This book is good for someone with existing experience in UNIX. I would not buy this book if I was entirely new to UNIX since the author make assumptions that you already know about certain concepts.

Great instruction.......2005-06-02
This is a really well done book, good, systematic, well thought out instruction. It methodically takes you through the complexities of this powerful application. It makes no assumptions about your knowledge and teaches in plain, easy-to-follow language, building one technique on another using a series of lessons. The material is presented logically, encouraging the student to explore, while still keeping a clear and consistent lesson plan to guide the learner from topic to topic.

My All Time Greatest Book On Consulting.......2007-09-08
This is the book that finally made it "click" for me.
I have bought copies for those I have coached and mentored and have seen them start right and quickly realize success for themselves.
A great book that should grace the bookshelf of any person just starting out.
To make it work you should be ready to work and actually use the tools and strategies provided.
Solid Advice from an Experienced Consultant.......2007-08-24
This is the best read on consulting I have come across! The content is applicable to any consulting practice regardless of industry focus. The concepts in this book do require that you have an existing understanding of the industry and business environment you plan to work in but that should be considered a given if you are looking to call yourself a consultant anyway. If you can't get your practice up and running based on the detailed step by step processes discussed in this book nothing can help you! Buy it, read it, live it!
Excellent guide for beginners.......2007-02-23
This is a very well-presented guide for anyone who is considering getting into consulting as a full-time business. It lays out the basic requirements and points you toward resources, but it does not contain detailed guidelines and legal advice, if that is what you are looking for.
Excellent Guide for the Beginning Consultant.......2006-10-21
It is easily the best I have read on the subject.
For most beginning consultants, the major problem is the marketing of our services. Closely following is gaining the confidence to charge what our services are worth. In these two areas and more, Dr. Weiss book provides specific and detailed advice. Emphasising the relationship centred nature of the consulting profession, he insists, and I think most practitioners' experiences bear him out, that you must make the sale "conceptually" before you can hope to successfully make it in fact, in a manner that leaves all parties satisfied. In presenting your proposals, Dr. Weiss advices that you provide outcome based options, so that your prospect asks himself, "how should I use Alan?" rather than "should I use Alan?" which is what a single option proposal with time based fees will likely elicit.
I wish I had discovered Alan Weiss' books five months ago. A prospect had called me out of the blues for a consulting assignment. When I got to his site for preliminary discussions to understand the points of pain and scope the project, he handed me over to a subordinate. With no opportunity to build a relationship (a mistake), it is no wonder that when I presented my $20,000 proposal which provided no options (another mistake), the prospect immediately asked for a 30% discount. Not wanting to give the impression that my figures were pulled out of a hat, I pushed back and offered an 18% discount instead. The prospect is yet to commit.
==========================
Fast forward two months. The client earlier referred to saw an article I'd written that touched the nerve of the issues facing his business and invited me back for a discussion. Then he again asked for a proposal. This time I offered three options, ranging from 30% to 80% above my original proposal. He chose the most expensive, negotiated it down (the final figure was still a full 50% above the original proposal). We commenced work on the project in December.
Good book, but be cautious of the directives and recommendations.......2006-10-06
This is a fairly comprehensive book on how to start a consulting business. I followed the steps outlined in the book to start my own business, but some of the recommendations Mr. Weiss makes go a little overboard. For instance, do you really need a copy machine? Do you really need a postage meter? Spending money on these things will burn through your start-up funds quickly!
One thing Mr. Weiss misses out on is how consultants should leverage the power of the internet to get the word out about their knowledge and expertise. Very surprising for a book with its latest edition published in 2003.

You bought your Mac OS X Tiger computer because you thought it would be easy to use-and it is! But if you've never used a computer before, never stared at a graphical user interface or clicked an icon to launch a program or open a file, getting going with your new machine can still be a daunting proposition. With this guide from legendary author Scott Kelby, it doesn't have to be! Realizing there are still plenty of novice users just like yourself whose Macs represent their very first foray into personal computing, this guide provides a simple, practical approach guaranteed to get you sending email, going on the Internet, creating Word documents, and more immediately with Mac OS X Tiger. Focused lessons take you step-by-step through all of the tasks you're most eager to tackle with your Mac OS X Tiger machine (in the order you're likely to approach them): using the mouse, going on the Internet, sending email, initiating iChat sessions, creating address books and calendars, importing and sharing photos, making play lists and burning CDs, synching music with your iPod, launching and saving Word documents, using search (Spotlight), organizing files, and more.

10 Tutorials.......2005-06-30
10 step-by-step hands-on tutorials that cover most of the things a beginner needs to know. Kelby writes with wit and precision and a picture appears with every step. I highly recommend this book for beginners, but I would also suggest you buy a more complete reference book for Tiger (Pogue or Williams).
I give it only 4 stars for lessons it leaves out. He promises to show you how to quit an application, but he doesn't (perhaps to "taunt and ridicule" beginners). Shutting down the Mac is only covered in the PowerBook tutorial. The close window button isn't mentioned until p.122 with a window with a greyed out button. Minor flaws (buy with another book) in a great set of lessons.

Commercial Real Estate 101.......2007-05-28
Good introduction for a novice. Not a must if you have any business background.
This Book Will Make you Money !!!.......2007-03-23
This is a great book on the practical side of "What to Do" and "How to Do It" to make money in commercial real estate.
A lot of books give you a lot of technical definitions and rules, but this book shows you the steps to follow to make things happen in your career.
I keep my under-lined and highlighted copy on my desk for constant review.
Great book, Buy it and make money!
Great 1st time book but too basic.......2007-03-08
Its a great 1st timer book, i bought it because i was a 1st timer. but after reading through half of it it seemed like most of it was a lot of repetitive information that i didn't really need. i would recommended it to 1st timers only.
Best how-to strategy I've read........2006-12-14
For those interested in breaking into commercial real estate, following all the steps in this book, though time-consuming, is a must in my opinion. I couldn't agree more with the strategy presented.
review - Steve Vornea.......2006-12-11
This is a useful book for investing in commercial property. It seems to be geared more toward the novice, and anyone with extensive experience in the field may find many of the concepts to be unnecessary. Nevertheless, a good primer for those learning the field
