Here's another management parable that draws its lesson from an unlikely source--this time it's the fun-loving fishmongers at Seattle's Pike Place Market. In Fish! the heroine, Mary Jane Ramirez, recently widowed and mother of two, is asked to engineer a turnaround of her company's troubled operations department, a group that authors Stephen Lundin, Harry Paul, and John Christensen describe as a "toxic energy dump." Most reasonable heads would cut their losses and move on. Why bother with this bunch of losers? But the authors don't make it so easy for Mary Jane. Instead, she's left to sort out this mess with the help of head fishmonger Lonnie. Based on a bestselling corporate education video, Fish! aims to help employees find their way to a fun and happy workplace. While some may find the story line and prescriptions--such as "Choose Your Attitude," "Make Their Day," and "Be Present"--downright corny, others will find a good dose of worthwhile motivational management techniques. If you loved Who Moved My Cheese? then you'll find much to like here. And don't worry about Mary Jane and kids. Fish! has a happy ending for everyone. --Harry C. Edwards

With most new products you have to start somewhere and for those that are familiar with SP2003 but have no idea with 2007 or are new to SPS2007 then this is a great starting point to learn the architecture behind it all a reference guide to assist when you not 100% sure on doing something as an administrator.

4 out of 5 stars Not for developers.......2007-05-13

Great book for pre-sales and administrators. But too much information in this book does not give crispy answers to questions

3 out of 5 stars Sharepoint encyclopedia...........2007-05-05

It discusses everything you need to know with regard to MOSS 2007 but never really makes a point or stands out in any area. I read it and I feel like I am reading an infomercial about it and at times it lays out things you can do but it is not focused or useful in terms of diving into Sharepoint functionality or pointing out ways to actually get anything satisfying accomplished.

5 out of 5 stars if you use MOSS 2007, you need this book!.......2007-04-11

This is the "real" documentation for MS Office sharepoint server 2007. I believe they should have included a pdf version with each licensed version of the server.

2 out of 5 stars Contributing Authors Make it Worthwhile.......2007-04-11

When the "principle" author turns the writing reins over to others, the contents of this book becomes worthwhile. Unfortunately, that does not happen often enough. In reading this book I am reminded of the Calvin and Hobbes cartoon where Hobbes asks Calvin why he is not going to school. Calvin replies that he is just going to go on talk shows and hype himself.

Don't buy into the hype. If you do, you are going to feel very lonely with this Administrator's Companion. Scot Hillier's books, although they have a developer focus, offer a lot more than this book does for the administrator.

Thsi book is great!, I'm taking an Excel class this semester at college and needed the book. Great price and easy to understand for new and old users of Excel.

5 out of 5 stars Used it in college course - EXCELLENT BOOK!.......2007-01-10

I'm taking Excel Spreadsheets in college this quarter. The book is clear, and easy to understand (even for those unfamiliar with using a computer, in my opinion).

One of the best parts is the great visual aids. Each tutorial gives color pictures of what you should be seeing on the screen of your computer while you work the tutorial. Sections within the chapter are also very well color organized and bolded for easy skimming if you are not new to the material.

Our teacher says that the book gets really advanced the farther on you read. Our basics & intermediate class only goes halfway through the book. The advanced excel class reads the second half, which teaches material on the level required by Microsoft in order to receive Microsoft Office Certification on the "expert" level.

On another note, Excel is an invaluable tool for personal use and in the work world.

Book Description

Lean production has been proven unbeatable in organizing production operations, yet the majority of attempts to implement lean end in disappointing results. The critical factor so often overlooked is that lean implementation requires day-to-day, hour-by-hour management practices and skills that leaders in conventional batch-and-queue environments are neither familiar nor comfortable with.

Creating a Lean Culture helps lean leaders succeed in their personal batch-to-lean transformation. It provides a practical guide to implementing the missing links needed to sustain a lean implementation. Mann provides critical guidance on developing and using the key elements of a lean management system, including: leader standard work, visual controls, daily accountability processes, maintaining a process focus, managing key HR issues, and much more. In addition, a questionnaire is included to help assess current management practices and monitor progress.

Highlights: Distinguishes the much-discussed, abstract concept of "lean culture" from the concrete, implementable practices of lean management. Describes and illustrates 4 key principles of lean management: leader standard work; visual controls; daily accountability process, and discipline. Shows how visual controls bring process focus to life, tie in lean's requirement for highly disciplined execution, and make leaders' new jobs far easier to explain, model and evaluate. Moves beyond models and theories of lean management to show how to implement the daily practices that are the key to implementing and sustaining a lean transformation. Lots of case examples, figures and photographs.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference on real lean.......2007-10-05

This book fills an essential gap between Liker's Toyota Way and the many books on Lean Tools.

We intentionally didn't begin our lean transformation in our large service orgnization until we had this book because we saw the folly in trying to implement a bunch of lean tools without the necessary management system.

We have visited some Tier 1 Toyota suppliers and Kaizen really means continuous improvement not a succession of week-long projects that many big-time consultants and organizations focus on.

This book is our defacto lean transformation handbook and I am glad to see that it has become a standard reference for at least two MBA programs in the area.

5 out of 5 stars Book has quite an impact on new lean leaders.......2007-06-19

This is a fantastic book, one of the small number of "core" lean books that I recommend to people. I've used the book with many healthcare clients who are new to lean. They have loved the book so much that they have read it three times, learning something new each time, and learning something different at each stage of their lean learning journey. The most frequent comment I hear is that the book means one thing to them before they start but it means even more to them after they have "struggled" with a lean environment on their own, revisiting the book and its concepts helps immensely.

Mann's book helps make concrete the vague notion of a "lean culture" and spells out steps leaders can take to start moving in that direction. The book doesn't promise quick fixes, nor should it, but it puts you on the right path to developing your people, your leaders, and your problem solving skills. Kudos to David Mann for a very practical, actionable guide for lean leaders or those of us who strive to become lean leaders.

5 out of 5 stars Clearly shows you why something so simple is so hard to do.......2007-04-11

I've been doing Lean since 2000 (Six Sigma earlier, 1997) and have been applying general Toyota methods with what I'd consider a very good amount of success. The problem has been, how do you convey the necessity of the Toyota Lean method as a complete "business system" as opposed to JIT and "tools" thinking for busy, batch-thinking individuals? This book fills the gaping void.

Pro:
-Straight forward principles, complete and thorough
-Appear to be true to the Toyota principles as I have seen demonstrated by ex-Toyota executives/leaders turned consultants
-Drives to the heart of lean as a business system, with many elements that I've personally tried or seen work well
-A Shingo Prize winner... impressive
-Avoids excessive Japanese terminology (not an issue for me, but sometimes an issue for others)

Con:
-I think that the power of IT applications is somewhat understated, and pitfalls of using or attempting to use IT-related systems not well described. Would like to see a better description of pitfalls and issues more specifically. Until then, think of IT as you would if you were automating a process... it had better be high volume and well understood/mature.

Bottom Line: I think this a must-have text, and it is excellently written and laid out... plus it's to the point reinforced with numerous short case study examples. I'd recommend pairing this book with "The Toyota Way" (read that first to pave the way for this book). Also consider "The Toyota Way Fieldbook" as the ideal 3rd text to study. A word of caution, these books require a whole new way of thinking and commitment.

4 out of 5 stars New Lean Leader's Review.......2007-04-01

Good easy to follow book. Interesting sections of different leader's responsibilities and the amount of time they should spend on standard work relative to their position. Also, intersting ideas on how to collect and follow up on worker's improvement ideas.

4 out of 5 stars Managing in a Lean Organisation.......2007-03-08

There are many books on the principles of lean, how to map value streams, 5S and so on. I am not aware of any other books devoted to how managers should behave in the lean environment. This book concentrates on the management "process" and recommends a number of key behaviours for lean leaders:
1) Leader standard work - i.e. standard tasks, notably walking the work area and reviewing performance on the "gemba", as a regular activity;
2) Visual controls - linking cell and value stream visual management with strategy;
3) Daily accountability meetings.

It is fairly straightforward to understand, and it is a short book (less than 200 pages) but it makes its points well and its clear focus highlights the importance of these simple activities and behaviours for managers to reinforce and sustain the lean philosophy. I particularly like the chapter on people and participation. The book could have an easier style but overall I recommend it for all managers moving towards lean. Without managers displaying the lean culture in their actions, the transformation will not hold.

The Case for Christ records Lee Strobel's attempt to "determine if there's credible evidence that Jesus of Nazareth really is the Son of God." The book consists primarily of interviews between Strobel (a former legal editor at the Chicago Tribune) and biblical scholars such as Bruce Metzger. Each interview is based on a simple question, concerning historical evidence (for example, "Can the Biographies of Jesus Be Trusted?"), scientific evidence, ("Does Archaeology Confirm or Contradict Jesus' Biographies?"), and "psychiatric evidence" ("Was Jesus Crazy When He Claimed to Be the Son of God?"). Together, these interviews compose a case brief defending Jesus' divinity, and urging readers to reach a verdict of their own.

Book Description

Using the dramatic scenario of an investigative journalist pursuing his story and leads, Lee Strobel uses his experience as a reporter for the Chicago Tribune to interview experts about the evidence for Christ from the fields of science, philosophy, and history. Winner of the Gold Medallion Book Award and twice nominated for the Christian Book of the Year Award.

5 out of 5 stars My boyfriend met Christ through this book.......2007-09-12

I think this book does a pretty good job at analyzing Jesus' existence and the validity of the bible from various angles, such as via archeology, psychology, anatomy, science, logic, etc. And amazingly, by God's grace, my boyfriend met Christ through this book! Praise God.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling Arguments.......2007-09-01

I found The Case for Christ to be well written and the arguments put forward to be very compelling. Mr. Stobel uses a series of interviews with a variety of experts to build his case and each presented facts or points of view that were very hard to refute. Excellent book.A Startrek to Eternity

4 out of 5 stars A good starting point for both skeptics and apologists.......2007-08-28

I've read this book numerous times and read the reviews of those who gave the books low scores. This book is a good starting point for people with lots of agnostic/atheist friends. Granted, if your friend was Hawkings or Dawkins, you might have a tough time relying on this book. Sometimes it doesn't cover topics you'd like to be covered and sometimes the reasoning takes a bit of thinking to understand, but generally, this book covers all the bases.

Of course, the writer had a Christian agenda. Everything has a systemic bias. I could write a review on The Selfish Gene saying that the book has an evolutionist bias. For others, just "the Bible says so" is a good argument. This is even more sillier, like driving a car without knowing how to brake. When your friends give you an obstacle, you can only swerve around it or crash and burn. In Matthew 22:37, Jesus said to love the Lord with all your mind and that sound doctrine should be taught. If you can't argue for sound doctrine, how can you teach and understand it?

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking.......2007-08-23

This book is very well written in an investigative style and counters some of the less challenged arguments of those who do not believe in Christ as the Son of God. Usually, agnostics and atheists present what appears to be an intellectually sound argument against Christ's position as the Savior of the world. These arguments are countered methodically and give the non-theologian a source for countering arguments against Christ. I have read Strobel's "A Case for Faith" and because of that read this book. It is nice to read intellectually sound arguments for Christ that can't be dismissed as the work of religious zealots or "kooks" as Christians are sometimes portrayed when defending their beliefs.

5 out of 5 stars Just plain excellent.......2007-08-21

This is a most interesting book, excellently written, decisive and to the point. It touches on areas that any believer has pondered and many atheists base their faith on.

Any thinking person cannot argue the facts uncovered in it. It is also a good reference for the up and coming apologist.

It is so much easier to be an atheist than a believer. This book reveals the futility of the easy belief...

There are a few problems with the textbook but once you are aware of those problems everything works correctly. One big problem is that the book doesn't tell you, but when you change the insurance provider for an individual, you also must change it for anyone else under his insurance (spouse, child, etc.). You also need to have Medisoft Version 9 in order to use this textbook.

This book is useless. You need the medisoft software for the disks to work. Useless. In the description and details of the book, it should let you know you need to already have the medisoft software install on your system or have access to it. I felt very deceived.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent BOOK.......2007-07-29

I find this book very easy to read. I am a beginner and the book is very friendly describing the info. Go ahead. You will not regret paying the $$$. The good thing that every keyword in the text is blue-colored. If you read the fist part (5 chapters) you will understand the PM very well (if you are a novice). Good for students and professionals too. The CD attached for practicing is very easy too. I am happy.

5 out of 5 stars Top of scale.......2007-07-16

This is the 7th purchase from here and I have yet to be anything but well satisifed. This one tops the list as it was helpful right of the shelf at my new job. The boss was happy so you can gues how I feel.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-06-13

the book came on time and had the CD. It was it great shape.

4 out of 5 stars Good to Start With.......2007-06-09

Covers the basics very good.
However, not very comprehensive. OK as a first book in this field.

4 out of 5 stars Very thourough but moves at a very slow pace.......2007-05-25

This book is well written and clear with lots of follow along activities. While I'm pretty new to Project, I still found the pace exhaustingly slow. It's a bit hard to skip ahead as you don't really know when the good stuff is going to come in. It's done this way to allow you to work either from start to end, or jump from topic to topic.
I can't fault them for this, but as I was trying to learn everything about the program, I found the pace so painfully slow that it was a bit discouraging.

I think this book is best for either a person who does not have a lot of computer experience and really wants their hand held at every step, or someone who just needs a reference to look up particular techniques. If you are fairly savvy and are trying to learn quickly, you may find this a bit of a drag.

4 Stars because it's good at what it does, but not 5 because for some it'll just be too dull.

Book Description

Microsoft SharePoint: Building Office 2007 Solutions in C# 2005 is the third edition of Scot Hillier's market-leading SharePoint book. This book features extensive updates to the previous edition, with a complete focus on SharePoint 2007 and its integration with the 2007 Microsoft Office System. 5 out of 5 stars Excellent training book for sharepoint.......2007-08-01

Wow! I like the way Scot Hillier wrote this book. For experienced .net developers new to sharepoint, this book must be on your book shelf.

Scot Hillier walks you through fundamental aspects of Sharepoint, and shares his insightful thoughts along the path. At first, I do not understand why he solves problems using a variety of Microsoft technologies such as Visual Studio, InfoPath, Sharepoint Designer. To me, isn't that Visual Studio enough? Later, I realize that his way is the best since he picks the right tool for the right moment.

However, I do not see an enterprise sample in his book. I do expect that. Second, web part security is a tough topic. I expect more explanation. In the exercise, a medium trust level is used. According to the context of that chapter, a minimal trust level should be used.

5 out of 5 stars Very good guide and reference.......2007-06-07

This is a very good book from C# developers point of view. It covers most of the features that you want to customize in SharePoint. I like the presentation of ideas first and then exercises. It gives you a starting point on how to do it and it's up to you to go to a more complex level but at least it already gives you an idea what to look for.
I highly recommend it and it is easy to carry as it has only around 500 pages.
After this I will read the SharePoint Administrators Companion book by Bill English from Mindsharp.

5 out of 5 stars Great Work as Usual.......2007-04-10

I remember when I was learning MTS I bought Scot's book, MTS Programming With Visual Basic, and was truly amazed at what an easy read it was on such a technical subject. The reason is very clear. Scot knows what he is wrting about not only from a technical perspective, but also from a business perspective. His insights are priceless.

I thoroughly enjoyed his MOSS 2007 book and recommend it highly. Personally, I am very thankful that people like Scot take the time to write valuable books like this one. He makes up for other authors, who write huge books, that are painful to read and contribute nothing. One such author, and apparently his editors, does not even know that he is the "principal" not "principle" author of his book.

3 out of 5 stars Scratches the surface.......2007-04-10

I was assigned on a project where I should be using MOSS 2007. I had not used MOSS before and I needed a book that will give me a jump start. This book does that. For a beginner it is a very good book. However the instance you need more detailed information this book is not that useful.

5 out of 5 stars Great intro and mid-level work on SharePoint.......2007-04-05

This book's a critical resource if you're doing development on the SharePoint 2007 platform. The book hits a solid overview of the many features of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) and also gives you good dives into many of those same features. The book also deals with Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) and lays out differences between WSS and MOSS.

Hillier does a great job of covering the gory details of MOSS and hits the pros and cons of each feature. One example would be the hideous XML you have to hand-generate for working with the Business Data Catalog. He also does a great job discussing one of my recent pain points: workflow. Hillier lays out the strengths of the feature (workflow's power of process automation), then talks about the warts of the feature (design difficulties, numerous issues surrounding SharePoint Designer, etc.). Hillier is also honest about where MOSS features fall short, such as the note laying Hillier's preference for the K2 workflow engine over that of native Windows Workflow Foundation on MOSS.

The book is structured in a concise, highly usable fashion. Hillier discusses topics, then uses clearly written examples to walk you through the topic. All the examples are implemented in an environment that Hillier focuses an entire chapter on setting up. That chapter (#2) is one of the book's gems since it shows you how to get an entire development infrastructure set up and configured using Virtual Server to host three separate machines.

If you've already had exposure to MOSS then the book may not have a lot of extras for you. The dives into each feature aren't necessarily extremely deep dives, but they are good enough to get you well-versed with the concepts.

Hillier's book is an absolute must-have if you're looking to move in to any sort of work on the MOSS platform.

Special Edition Using Microsoft® Office 2007

THE ONLY OFFICE BOOK YOU NEED

We crafted this book to grow with you, providing the reference material you need as you move toward Office proficiency and use of more advanced features. If you buy only one book on Office 2007, Special Edition Using Microsoft® Office 2007 is the only book you need.

If you own a copy of Office 2007, you deserve a copy of this book! Although this book is aimed at the Office veteran, Ed and Woody’s engaging style will appeal to beginners, too. Written in clear, plain English, readers will feel as though they are learning from real humans and not Microsoft clones. Sprinkled with a wry sense of humor and an amazing depth of field, this book most certainly isn’t your run-of-the-mill computer book. You should expect plenty of hands-on guidance and deep but accessible reference material.

This isn’t your Dad’s Office! For the first time in a decade, Microsoft has rolled out an all-new user interface. Menus? Gone. Toolbars? Gone. For the core programs in the Office family, you now interact with the program using the Ribbon–an oversize strip of icons and commands, organized into multiple tabs, that takes over the top of each program’s interface. If your muscles have memorized Office menus, you’ll have to unlearn a lot of old habits for this version.

Ed Bott is an award-winning computer journalist and one of the most widely recognized voices in the computing world, with nearly two decades of experience as a writer and editor at leading magazines, such as PC World, PC Computing, and Smart Business. Ed has written many of Que’s all-time bestsellers, including Special Edition Using Office 2000, Special Edition Using Windows 98, and Special Edition Using Windows Me.

5 out of 5 stars Another good book from the Special Edition Series.......2007-03-30

I have to learn Office 2007 enough to teach it, and there aren't many books out yet for it. The Special Edition series is one that I use for a desktop reference for several programs, and this one goes with them. It's clear, not cute or condescending, has good content, and is easy to refer to with questions. It's a good book to keep on hand as you learn Office 2007.

Book Description

Workflow is the glue that binds information worker processes, users, and artifacts. Without workflow, information workers are just islands of data and potential. Workflow in the 2007 Microsoft Office System details how to implement workflow in SharePoint 2007 and the rest of the 2007 Office System to help information workers share data, enforce processes and business rules, and work more efficiently together or solo.

This book covers anything you're likely going to need to know -- from what workflow is all about, to creating new Activities; from InfoPath forms to ASP.Net forms; from the Rules Engine to the object model. There's even a section on integrating Office 2003 clients with SharePoint 2007 workflows. You'll come away from reading this book with solid knowledge of how to implement workflow in the new world of Office and SharePoint.

3 out of 5 stars Crutial Information about Asp.Net Task Forms is missing.......2007-09-14

Wanted to know about aspx forms dev-n-dep for sharepoint 2007 workflows. Found no code samples online [all samples online talk about infopath :-(]. From the table of contents thought that this book will be good BUT unfortunately it is NOT. It is missing a crutial information about dev-n-dep of .aspx custom TASK forms.
This book explains about custom TASK forms using InfoPath BUT NOT USING ASPX!!!
Otherwise this book is excellent from Asp.Net dev-n-dep viewpoint.

3 out of 5 stars Nice person.......2007-07-23

I read half of this book over the weekend when I didn't have the possibility to connect to the net and then it is useful. But it is a little bit to much screen dumps etc. and we inherit from this class and I don't know why or "I am not a good programmer" so for someone that wants a first introduction to Workflow in Sharepoint then this book or do some free web training can be recommended. For a deeper understanding of workflow this is not a book. Maybe that Sharepoint workflow book is not written yet.

Some good points that I like is the connection with Sharepoint Office and what the vision is as I am still having my customers running 2003 that is useful...

5 out of 5 stars All the Essentials.......2007-04-27

I agree with many of the reviews already written. This is a well organized and to the point tutorial on workflows with the Office system. I skimmed through once to get the high level overview, and dove into chapter 6 to get into designing workflows in visual studio very quickly.

As was pointed out in another review, the author is 'conversational' but I didn't feel like it hurt the book at all. I guess that is a matter of personal preference. Overall, this book was very helpful and I would highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic WF+MOSS 2007 reference.......2007-03-27

I struggled with workflows, especially integreating the webified versions into MOSS 2007 Forms Server going back to the very early beta days. While I was able to get them to work, some concepts were hazy to me. David's book brought it all together with some fantastic examples. If you're new to WF, this first section will address the core concepts... no need to go out and get another workflow book. The three chapters on creating a custom activity, creating a sequential & statemachine workflow, and making it available over the web via Forms Server are fantastic.

Only reason I'm not giving it a 5 out of 5 is because the book is very conversational. A book of this type should be more reference, not "chatty."

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding coverage of a difficult topic.......2007-03-14

I have been creating workflows in SharePoint 2007 since early in the beta. The process is challenging and - at times - frustrating. David has done an excellent job providing the details and examples necessary for developers to be successful. You will find answers in this book that are not available from any other source.
