Customer Reviews:
Excellent book, however..........2007-05-06
This is a great book loaded with great material, however some of the material is false. For instance, the Faro Shuffle section is all entirely wrong. It is thought by some that this was done on purpose, and if so it is entirely unethical of the authors. Regardless, this book has a plethora of fantastic material, and I highly recommend it.
Second book to read.......2007-02-02
I consider this book the next step after reading the great Royal Road to Card Magic. I did not like some tricks, but, the really important part of the book is, as it is stated in the title, is the technique showed. Recommended.
318 Illustrations, averaging 1 illustration per page.......2004-12-04
I am not sure who this book is written by.
It's an encyclopedia, of card handling.
There is no connection from one chapter to the next and unless you are an english major, you will simply be very very frustrated trying to understand what to do and how.
This book is not for beginner but rather someone who has a very good grasp of handling cards and would like to know more than he already knows.
This book is like an english dictionary, you being a foreigner who knows half a dozen words. You'll find yourself trying to decrypt half the instructions. Do you have the time and patience for it? I sure didn't. You'll find this to be mysterious text that might become clear to you some day, unless you already know how to do half the material in it to begin with.
Essential Reading for the Cardician.......2002-06-01
This book is comprehensive in scope-it covers about all of the basic techniques the card worker needs to know. It goes far beyond this, however. All techniques taught are described in *excruciating* detail so as to leave nothing to the imagination. It also includes ongoing words of advice on and entire chapters devoted to the _real_ secrets of magic: misdirection and presentation. As if all this were not MORE than sufficient to recommend the book, it's written in a very witty, eloquent, and entertaining style that makes it a joy to simply read. But wait! There's more! Please find enclosed numerous card effects worthy of the most discriminating audiences at less than the cost of your favorite magic dealer's Trick O' the Day. With regard to my own experience I've read this book near to tatters and have annotated nearly every other page-I got my money's worth and so will you.
Classic and classy.......2001-11-25
Though there are numorous tricks and books out there deaing with almost every imaginable subject, the roots, like those in this book, will always live on..Nothing can compair to the captive audience that surrounds you while doing some of the most artistic and acrobatic gestures with a mere deck of cards. Own it, read it, study it, and practice it. I had the fortune to find a hardbound third edition in an old bookstore, which was not soon after I had already bought the paperback. Boy was this a find. The third edition has had two new chapters added, which were written by Dai Vernon and Dr. Daley. The paperback is based on an older edition of the book and does not include these two chapters, but it is still worth having on your shelf.
Customer Reviews:
Good book.......2007-09-12
It's good, only if what you're looking for is a concise guide - for both digital and film photography.
No camera info for the photos! (!)
One of the better books out there.......2007-09-06
Very clearly written for beginner or advanced. A lot of information. Beautiful pictures. I only wish that each picture had the camera info. Like the f stops, shutter speeds, lens etc. But it does cover landscapes, wildlife, color, close ups very well. Nicely catagorized and a good read. If only it would have the camera info like some other books do it would have been a 5 star book.
The Magic of Digital Close-Up Photography (A Lark Photography Book.......2007-01-13
An excellent book. The author doesnt push you to buy the most expensive equipment, but gives honest reviews about the advantages and disadvantages, about different equipment and lets the reader decide how best to match their budget to their requirements. If your starting out in macro photography well worth the read.
Very solid book with VERY many typos, as though I bought a proof copy.......2006-09-22
I would definitely recommend this book if what you're looking for is a concise and informative guide to a wide array of techniques for shooting close ups with your D-SLR, your digicam, or even your scanner (the scanner chapter was particularly inspiring). Mr. Meehan's prose is a bit labored, but he does exactly what I was hoping he would do: he gives examples of different close up photos you might want to take (flowers or insects outside, jewelry in artificial light, model cars with a dedicated macro flash system, ETC.), and then gives a concise run-down of what you need to do and possibly purchase in order to make similar shots.
My only criticism of this book is that it contains an almost unbelievable number of typos, nearly one every three pages, as well as at least one totally incorrect image (an image of what is supposed to be a camera with a bellows extender attached actually shows something completely different). Still, if you can get past all the typos, it's a good basic primer in digital close up techniques, with a few ideas you may not even have thought to try.
Great treatise on Close-Up Magic!.......2006-07-04
Digital cameras have some special advantages when it comes to taking close-up photos, as the author reveals in this excellent book. There are also some pitfalls to avoid, and the author covers them, too. While this book is aimed at intermediate to advanced photographers, even beginners can learn something from the friendly tone and thorough coverage. This book is a great tool for becoming a master of macro photography quickly.
Book Description
Street Magic is a great how-to magic book that teaches the real secrets of close-up, under-your-nose, in-your-face magic as seen on TV. Magic is one of the longest surviving forms of entertainment and is as popular today as ever, having undergone a huge renaissance recently. This book contains the very best tricks and illusions as popularized by today's greatest magicians. It is an accessible book, free of buzzwords and fully photo-illustrated, featuring tricks using everyday objects, designed for those who want the lowdown as quickly and easily as possible, but without skimping on all-important detail. The chapters and tricks are arranged so that the reader can comfortably progress from one to the other in skill and performance level.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent magic book .......2007-08-22
This is easily one of the better books for beginners. Quite a few pictures and clear instructions make this a real winner. The author does a superb job of explaining how to present each illusion which in reality is far more important than the mechanics behind the trick. This is a nice change from many of the other magic books targeted at the novice. By the way, the tricks cover a wide range (e.g. cards, coins, mentalism) and are all of high quality.
Excellent, great tricks, easy instructions.......2007-06-26
This book not only contains great tricks but it also explains them in a way easily followed, with detailed color photographs and understandable text. Highly recommended!
Excellent guide to classic tricks.......2005-10-04
I predict that this book will become a classic for both beginning and intermediate magicians. Very little of the material is new and it won't make you the next David Blaine, but it does provide excellent handlings of classic tricks which require little or no set-up. The explanations and photos are clear and helpful.
Book Description
Easy-to-master crowd-pleasing tricks, require a deck of cards and offer beginners experience in handling an audience. Instructions.

Good begginers Book.......2005-10-28
Karl Fulves has been putting out these kinds of books for what seems like an eternity. They are good books for kids and even a skilled performer can pull some good material from these books.
[...]
Card book.......2002-12-26
I got this because the other reviews said how good it was, but i opened it and gave up almost immediatly. The instructions are difficult to follow.
Self-Working = No sleight of hand.......2002-04-07
This book, along with all the other Fulves Self-Working series are full of really great magic that can be done without years of practice. That however, doesn't mean no practice. As with any presentation before an audience, attention to instructions and good audience management are essential. This means that, just like an actor in a play, the magician-to-be must know exactly what to do and when to do it, what to say and when to say it. This requires several run-throughs with no audience. (Sound like practice to me!!) I think that 'self-working' in the title means that you can do the effects without working on sleights for several months/years before you can do anything magical. This material can be presented after a few hours practice!
Not totally self working........2002-03-10
The tricks in this book are not totally self working. You have to remember a lot and tell people what to do.
Self-Working Close-Up Card Magic: 53 Foolproof tricks.......2000-02-10
Having had no magic creating experience, it amazed me how with the clear illustrated instructions in this book, I could within a very short time have over a dozen card tricks at my command..now I've ordered Fulves' other "Self-Working" books to expand my ability to entertain and amaze others! It's really fun!

Even if it takes an eternity, he will make amends...
MORTAL WEAKNESS
Greed. Fear. Anger. All, technically, human emotions. But Angel's a demon, not a saint, and he's not immune to human emotions. So when big-shot Hollywood studio head Jack Willitts offers him huge sums of cash in exchange for guarding his overprivileged daughter, Karinna, the Dark Avenger takes the gig. After all, as Cordy and Doyle point out eagerly -- there's rent to pay. And Willitts can certainly foot the bill.
After accompanying Karinna to several trendy nightspots, Angel writes her off as a spoiled brat. Cordy thinks Angel's too personally involved in the case, but the situation is worse than they suspect. Karinna's in trouble and suddenly Angel and company are being pursued by an unidentifiable creature, bent on destroying everything between it and what it wants most in the world.
Before long, Angel finds himself trapped within a supernatural struggle for power, fame...and immortality.

Growing Old Gracelessly.......2004-06-24
Somewhere in Ireland an old mage is getting older faster. He is in danger of dying before he can complete his he plans to resurrect Balor of the Baleful Eye and conquer the world. Naturally, the solution is to move to Los Angeles and make life miserable for Angel. In the meantime Doyle has a flash, and Angel finds himself defending Karinna Willitts, a beautiful young woman who happens to be the daughter of Hollywood's most powerful studio head. Trust Cordy to immediately parlay this fortunate moment into a studio job, while Angel is offered the opportunity to become Karinna's permanent guardian. The young lady has a nose for trouble, and loves to be in it.
As Mordractus (the mage) begins to weave his plans to turn the unsuspecting vampire into a health food drink there is action on another front entirely. Kate Lockley is hunting a group of bank robbers who make a habit of tunneling into vaults and popping up with the money. Only this last time they popped up the killed three people who happened to be in their way. In other words, business is as usual in the city of stars.
Jeff Mariotte is a change of pace in this fourth volume in the Angel novel series. For a change, the story stays in the present, and the plot is full of complex twists and turns. Mariotte is good at developing characters through action, which means that those characters who play big roles (Angel, Kate, and Cordelia) develop considerable dimensionality. The walk-on parts (and in this case Doyle doesn't get much of a part to play) are always a bit sketchy, but Mariotte's pace is fast enough that it never really becomes an issue.
Cordy's adventures in studio land are a characteristic satire of the countless facades of Hollywood life, as Mariotte works to build a cynical view of the industry that, after all, has provided some of cynicism's greatest moments. One has to sympathize with Cordy, who would either like to get paid or become famous, and never seems to manage to accomplish either. Angel, wizards, demons, thieves, Hollywood, and the FBI - who could ask for anything more?
Another great read!.......2002-06-25
Really interesting story. Loved seeing a side of "Angel" that I'm not use to. Recommend to all, especially fans of the show.
A Great Angel Book!.......2001-08-04
I just finished reading "Close to the Ground" and I must say that so far, it is my favorite. It started out as a magician named Mortractus tried to bring back Balor, the one-eyed giant, from another dimension. But he was aging with every spell that he performed and was looking for a way to live forever. Which was what brought him to LA. Meanwhile, Angel had troubles of his own: what with having to be a bodyguard to the daughter of a big movie company, whom he thought was spoiled and only helped her because Doyle had a vision. I really liked the book because even though Angel was not around Kate, the writer still had a story for Detective Lockley and her and Angel seldom crossed paths until close to the end. The best part was right after that when the whole story took a quick turn and Angel finally figured out how to save the girl from Doyle's vision. This is a great book and I think that anyone who's an Angel fan should pick this one up.
As good as mainstream bestselling suspense thrillers.......2001-01-30
This book matches and surpasses most of the big bestselling mainstream suspense thrillers. It is not just for the fans of the tv show about the vampire detective. If it had been relaesed as a hardcover with a different character's name, it would be a bestselling hardcover. SHAKEDOWN, and HOLLYWOOD NOIR are particularly great other volumes in this series. If you like James Patterson, Tom Savage, Jonathan Kellerman, Jefferson Swycaffer, Joe L. Hensley, Tami Hoag, Wilson Tucker, John Sandford, David Wiltse (or not) add this to your pile to be read.
Good Job, Jeff Mariotte.......2001-01-22
Close to the Ground is now my favorite in the line of Angel books. Mariotte managed to combine true greed with the supernatural in a well-thought out manner. After Angel has accepted the job of bodygaurd over a hot-shot director's daughter, Karinna, weird (as usual) things began to happen. What does an ancient Celtic sorceror want with Angel? How does Karinna mesh with the Celtic man? Angel has to figure out those two questions, as well as save Kate Lockley who has become hostage to a group of nasty bank robbers. Nothing like a good old cops and robbers plot. Especially one which is splendidly done and meshed in with a supernatural tale. I do have one tiny complaint; Mariotte made Angel a bit too sarcastic during his battles with the Celtic sorceror's minions. But other than, Close to the Ground is a very good novel.
