Round Robin: To celebrate the beginning of Elm Creek Quilts, Sarah, Sylvia, and their circle of friends name themselves the Elm Creek Quilters. As a gift to Sylvia, the others have begun a round robin -- a quilt created by sewing concentric patchwork to a central block as it is passed around a sewing circle. As each woman makes her creative contribution, she adds her story to the history of Elm Creek Manor. Resplendent in green, blue, and gold, the quilt serves as a symbol of the complex, lasting ties that unify mothers and daughters, sisters and friends. "An Elm Creek Sampler" is a wonderful introduction to the world of Elm Creek quilts seeing as it is the three first novels together in one book! In "The Quilter's Apprentice" we are introduced to the women who are central figures for the series - the wonderful and knowledgeble master quilter Sylvia Compson and the ressourseful young woman Sarah McClure, and how they start the transformation of Elm Creek Manor from a run down sales item to the idea of a quilt retreat. We are also introduced to the Tangled Web Quilters - who in "Round Robin" become the staff of Elm Creek quils. In Round Robin we follow their everyday struggles, their ups and downs - this is my favorite among this wonderful series. In the last book in the sampler: " Cross Country Quilters" the quilt retreat is really up and running, and here we follow a group of quilters who meet at the manor and how they together find the strength to conquer their problems in life and how they form a wonderful friendship! Read them and you'll love them!!!

This is a great way to get "into" the series. Now my curiosity is peaked and I plan to read all of the books in this series.

Great book, love it when an author draws you in within just a few pages, Jennifer Chiaverini certainly knows how to do this. Enjoyed all 721 pages, did without sleep to keep reading, just had to know what happened next. Now reading the next 3 in the series, keep up the good writing J.C.

Have had this set in my library for over a year, but cannot say I have read every page ... but have used is for information gathering AND JUST PURE PLEASURE. A big "Well Done" for Ms. Ring!
Complete guide to an important period of needlework history.......1996-06-18
Betty Ring is a renowned needlework historian who really
knocked herself out for this complete look at American needlework
from the 1650s through the 1850s. While this two-book set may
seem expensive, rest assured it's filled with color and black
and white photographs of samplers, paintings, and newspaper
clippings about needlework during this 200-year period.
The writing is thick -- not a "day at the beach" reader, but
is chock-full of information for the different time periods and
areas of the U.S. covered here (the East Coast, mostly New England).
There are no patterns here to follow, nor are there many descriptions
of the stitches themselves. This book gives unique insight into
the origin of outstanding pieces of art/needlework, and discusses
at length the history of the schools that taught such work.

I received this book as a gift when I was fourteen, but have only begun to appreciate it as an adult. Organized by subject, this is a wonderful look into Laura Ingalls Wilder as an adult. Contains many anecdotes from her life that provide that window. Definately worth the time of anyone wanting a closer look into Laura's home life, as well as her political views.

I loved this book. I read it before I gave it to my daughter. It is a fictional family, but all the information is true to life. Interspersed with the story of the Robertsons, you can learn how to make your own cheese, dip a candle, or learn to tell the time from the sun.
This book will add to your library, and is a nice complement to Laura Ingalls Wilders books. Homeschooling familys will enjoy it, I know we did.

The Pioneer Sampler
The Pioneer Sampler is a fun and fascinating book. It tells about a pioneer family. Can Nekeek and Willy catch fish by hand? You'll find out. This is a fun book.

Experience pioneer life!!!.......2001-07-02
Barbara Greenwood has written a wonderful book that is as much fun for adults to read to children as it is for the children to read themselves. She doesn't just 'tell' about the Robertson's, she 'shows', drawing the reader into their lives...a pleasant place to be. I especially love Granny's story about how she came to America,on a ship, from Scotland.
The book is beautifully illustrated...all the way through...by Heather Collins. The pictures are so well done that, even as an adult, I would like to step into the scene!
There are instructions for simple, fun activities such as growing a potato plant, dyeing fabric using an onion, or making a cardboard jumping jack; pioneer games that will even entertain today's children for hours such as shadow shapes or knucklebones; and recipes that are easy for children.
Reading this book to a child is a great 'stress releaver'...it's like a little escape from the treadmill of life!!!
A wonderful book on pioneer life for children ages 6-14.......2001-05-10
I've read many books on pioneer life, and this is by far the best one for children. The book is about the Robertsons, a fictional family living in the west. While the family is fictional, the material is all drawn from real life.
The story takes you through a year in their lives, each chapter being its own story. After each chapter, the author provides explanatory material, giving detailed information about events and activities from the story. For example, there is a chapter about the children searching for a bee tree in order to find honey. In the explanatory material following the chapter, the author discusses beekeeping, division of labor among the bees, how the honey is actually made and the importance of honey to the early pioneers.
Unlike most books, we found the explanatory material every bit as captivating as the stories. In addition, the author suggests some activities children can do in order to learn more. Yesterday we conducted an experiment to see how the sap in the maple trees resists freezing because of its high sugar content. Today we made butter.
All in all, an excellent book. Thumbs up from [this family]

I love using this book in the classroom because of the way it takes each aspect of everyday pioneer living, and provides a non-fiction type short story along with more information about the job, skill, etc., along with an acitivity for the children to do.

You never know how writing for the stage will translate to the page, but the five performance pieces in "Clit Notes" make the move remarkably well. Perhaps because Holly Hughes is a brilliant writer, which you will discover when you read this incredible collection. The hysterically funny "The Well of Horniness",; which my girlfriend remembers almost having to walk out of because she was laughing so hard she was afraid she would pee in her pants, is almost as dangerous when read alone. What might qualify Hughes for genius stature, though, is how she hooks that humor to the most savage truth, as she does in the latter three pieces in the collection about, among other things, her mother, her father, and growing up "middle everything" in America. If any work outlasts our present era, this may be among it.Clit Notes is a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award in Drama.

The first play "The Well of Horniness", is an absolute scream. I mean serious, gut-busting, knee-slapping funny. The remaining plays are just okay. "The Well" is so good though, I still recommend the book.

Holly Hughes injects liberal amounts of humour in this marvellous collection of anecdotes, monologues and short plays. Sexy, sassy, sometimes silly - but never boring - the reader is treated to tongue-in-cheek stabs at society's indiosyncracies. Delightful!

Holly Hughes' Clit Notes is an intelligent, moving, and sharply funny collection of monolouges and personal stories.
Cutting and in the same turn of phrase totally vulnerable, her work creates the portrait of a new woman of the '90's, an in your face, smart, funny, sensitive, lesbian.
Anybody, male or female, gay or not should pick up this book! Highly recommended!!!

I loved the short stories by Rose Wilder Lane, (especially "Innocence") and Laura's pieces are also touching & well-written -- definitely recommended for the die-hard Ingalls-Wilder fan and for anyone interested in good short stories. Rose Wilder Lane will really impress those people who haven't read anything by her before.
Feed your Little House Craving.......2002-09-10
This was the book 10 years ago that introduced me to the fact there was more out there beyond the Little House books written by my favorite author and her daughter. After reading her "Missouri Ruralist" writings, it puts the theories of Laura not really writing the Little House books to rest. It also introduced me to the thrilling storytelling of Rose; so much so, I broke my cardinal "no lending of Little House books" rule to disasterous results. I'm glad to finally have a replacement.
Rose's interview with her father drives me nuts! You will find yourself wishing, after reading this and other snippets on "the man of the place" that Laura and Rose would have spent more time writing about him.
A little pricey for a paperback but still worth it.......2002-01-16
For those of us that are interested in life beyond the original "Little House" series, this is a great book to own/read. I think that it captures the character of Laura and Rose because the stories and articles are by their own hand.
I really enjoyed the photos throughout this book because while Garth Williams' representation of the Ingalls family is lovely, it is nice to see what they really looked like. Even though they are in black and white you can imagine Pa's eyes twinkling.
Rose and Laura have very different styles, but both styles are very good. I especially liked Laura's articles because they paint a picture of farm life. The sections range in length so if you one have a few moments of reading time here and there it isn't necessary to worry about reading it in one sitting (though you may want to!).
Other things I recommend are the Little House series (of course!), and the series about Rose that was published recently (it has its slow parts but it was written by someone close to the family so there is a lot of accuracy). If you want to read more of Laura and Rose's writing this book is the perfect solution even considering the high price.

This 'Sampler' is an absolute treat! I have completely enjoyed myself reading the stories in this book, the true and the fiction.
This was my first taste of Rose's work and she is an excellent writer and as we already know, Laura is as well! My favorites are ~ 'Let's Visit Mrs. Wilder'; 'How Laura Got Even'; 'Grandpas' Fiddle I & II'; 'It Depends On How You Look At It'; 'The Sunflower' and 'Object, Matrimony.'
An extra treat are the many photos and the commentary by William Anderson. I seem to have a neverending curiosity about Laura and her entire family. This book was very enjoyable because I learned about Laura's life after what she covered in her children's books.
I am acquiring quite a wonderful collection of Laura Ingalls Wilder books and this one shines brightly! Worth every penny.
Life after The First Four Years.......2000-11-09
A Little House Sampler is the perfect title for this book. It gives you a sample of both Laura Ingalls Wilder and Rose Wilder Lane's interesting lives. Rose gives us a look into her and her parents lives after The First Four Years. Grandpa's Fiddle and Grandpa's Fiddle II was very interesting. I really enjoyed that story. Rose's story about the Faces in the Window is a perfect ghost story to tell around a campfire. Laura's stories about remodeling the kitchen and the dining room was great reading. She had a real decorating flair with the colors she chose. Laura wrote for Almanzo too. His stories about moving the spring shows us his story telling ability plus he was a very smart man. The pictures show his fine carpentry work. What a talented family! I mostly enjoy Rose's stories that describe her family life. I found her fiction work good reading but I thought she did her best writing when she wrote about her family. This book is a must for Laura Ingalls Wilder and Rose Wilder Lane collectors!
