Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Loved this book.......2006-05-18

I've worked as a tv reporter for nearly 21 years...16 years in Portland, Oregon. This is by far one of the very best books I've read on the art of writing for tv news. I found it useful after reading the very first page. Tompkins uses clear, concrete examples to illustrate his points which instantly made me a better writer. Its refreshing to think about our craft with new insight on the purpose and focus of each story. I've urged all the producers and reporters in our newsroom to get and read this!

5 out of 5 stars Aim for the Heart is a first-rate "How-To " for TV journalists.......2005-08-12

Al Tompkins scores with a practical guide to make pictures and words compelling, even for a novice TV reporter.

5 out of 5 stars Probably THE book to read for any up-and-coming reporter..........2005-03-11

Mr. Tompkins' book was the reason I got my first job coming out of college. The first two stories I put on my resume tape were heavily influenced by the things I read in 'Write for the ear, shoot for the eye, aim for the heart.'

Al explains things so that you not only understand how to do the things we do, but also why we do the things we do. I still keep the book on my desk, and whenever my reporting gets into a rut, I haul out Al's book and re-read it. My next few stories are always better than my last few stories.

5 out of 5 stars Great teaching tool.......2004-07-14

I purchased this book to help teach high school students how to write for broadcast, and the lessons Tompkins gives are valuable for students and professionals. Tompkins shows the process behind the writing and the factors a reporter should consider, such as when less writing is more. The book is funny, entertaining, and touching at the same time. He gives many specific examples, including exerpts from scripts, that show the detail and the planning behind the writing. It changes the viewer's perspective on the television news, and it certainly could help professionals refine their writing for broadcast.

5 out of 5 stars Need more people to read books like this.......2004-04-23

Al Tompkins just gave a great presentation at RTNDA on how to find information on the internet. The seminar was filled with humor, insight, and just plain useful information. This book has a similar feel, like advice from someone who wants you to succeed. If a lot of young people read this book (along with some older journalists), perhaps journalism won't be in quite the spot it finds itself in.

Education can and should be a far more meaningful endeavor than the accumulation of facts, figures, or skills, according to editor and educator Steven Glazer. At its highest calling, education is the process of bringing forth one's innate identity and creative urges, learning from the wisdom and traditions of our elders and understanding one's connection and place in the world.

Seem like lofty, pie-in-the-sky goals? They shouldn't, claims Glazer, cofounder of the Naropa Institute School of Continuing Education and the person responsible for assembling this outstanding collection of original essays. Spiritual and cultural sages such as bell hooks, the Dalai Lama, Rachel Naomi Remen, M.D., and Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi speak to the book's four core themes: "The Ground of Learning;" "Identity;" "Relationship and Community;" and "Tradition and Innovation." Teachers, parents, and students alike will greatly appreciate this articulate and convincing blend of spirituality and education. --Gail Hudson

loved it. mind opening. and very insightful as veiwing the heart of learning in a school setting...

5 out of 5 stars Love, Peace, and School.......2000-07-06

This beautiful international book is where I found my dissertation. Learn something new in the service of children.

5 out of 5 stars The seminal book for today's education reform........1999-04-30

If just one teacher in every classroom bought this book and began to present the ideas of love and respect, autonomy and trust in the classroom (each and every classroom in the U.S.) the questions on the news would be answered.

Many of the problems in education seem to stem from alienation of individuals in the classrooms of America. Children are forced to feel apart from the class rather than being an integral part of the class and their own individual creative learning experience. The Naropa Conference was clear and honest in the formation of the new class curriculum. Respect for each and every student. Love as the main ingredient of the daily interactions.

If just that one (as in every one) teacher, bought the book...could undedrstand the message, and would apply it to his or her life, alienation and pressure to perform would be relics of an antiquated system destined to doom and failure. Children would begin to become the bright radiant suns of learning and personal growth rather than the reflecting moons of past educational process.

Highly recommend. A must for every person involved with children, from preschool through 100.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reading for every parent, teacher, college student........1999-03-07

This is an incredible book; a unique approach to integrating spirituality and education that includes writing from the Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, academic, feminist, environmental and scientific perspective. I highly recommend its use in college philosophy and education classes, as a thought-provoking selection for book clubs, and as important reading material for concerned parents and teachers. I highly recommend it.

      Book Description

Guns and greed lead to grief ... Chris Klick, a guy who traces missing musicians to give himself a trace of the good life, has kicked back to relax over a bird-watching, fly-fishing Idaho summer. Klick's buddy Lyel, a former pro basketball player, could get by clipping coupons. But he's a sucker for a story, and Klick's a sucker for a woman in distress. Together they succumb to Candy McGreggor and agree to find her missing sister, Roberta.
Roberta, an employee at the Butte Peak County Courthouse, seems to have triggered a string of disasters that began with a recent plane wreck and a dead pilot. Has she she just been unlucky, or has she been a player in some deadly game? And, it must be asked, has she gone off voluntarily, is she outrunning her creditors, or has she been abducted? If so, what's the payoff going to be?
Aim for the Heart is the second Chris Klick detection, following Dead Aim (1988, reprinted by Poisoned Pen Press). Klick and Lyel move to undercover work at Oxford University in Concerto in Dead Flat (Poisoned Pen Press, 1999).

      4 out of 5 stars Not quite there . . ........2001-05-26

It should come as no surprise that the second book published by an author is frequently not up to the same high quality of the first one. After all, that first one (probably) was not written to a deadline, but was, rather, fueled by the inner passion of the author. It's not at all uncommon to finish writing that first book, heave a tremendous sigh of relief, and vow to never touch another typewriter, or computer, as the case may be. Thankfully, in most cases, that latter sentiment doesn't last long, (although in some instances, it doesn't last long enough!) and in a day or so, the author is inspired enough to begin the second book. Even with luck, however, if there is a contract staring him or her in the face, time can interfere with the creative process.

I don't know if that happened with this book, but it has certainly happened to many others. I LOVED McCalls's first book Dead Aim, and vowed to read all his others. It appears there are only three, so far, with just a year or two between the first two, but several years between the latter two.

Not that this book is in any way insufficient, mind you; it just isn't quite sufficient enough. Chris and Lyel are still in Idaho, still loving--and enjoying--the countryside, while indulging in the occasional bit of work, as necessary. For Chris, this is tracing lost musicians to whom royalty payments are due. Lyel's work is mostly clipping coupons. And not the cents-off-at-the-grocery-store-variety, either.

After a fatal crash at the local airport (and the two buddies are volunteer firefighters, providing us with vivid descriptions of such an activity) Chris is asked to help a local woman find her missing sister. And thus begins the chase. That's the really good part, with the loving look at souped-up 50s and 60s hot-rods (if you're old enough to remember when this was being done, you'll really cherish this part of the book!) and a bit of spy-type activity in California as Chris looks for the owner of a building who doesn't want to be found.

Published in 1990, the book is still up to the minute, with environmental concerns mixed with politics, and, underneath it all, the steadily beating heart of an appealing, yet lonely man. Now, to find that third book, and hope for a fourth. And a fifth. Maybe even a sixth?

        Book Description

In books, on the internet, and through his own publication, an outspoken former Adventist minister is claiming that the 1844 investigative judgment doctrine is a sham and can't be supported biblically. He also labels Ellen White a false prophet. How can we respond?

In Graffiti in the Holy of Holies, author and church apologist Clifford Goldstein examines the arguments against Ellen White and the pre-Advent judgment, and responds point by point. The result is a thoughtful and clear defense that goes beyond his earlier "1844 Made Simple" in revealing the Bible-based and gospel-uplifting truth about the sanctuary.

Vandals are attempting to spoil your faith. The time to know the difference between the Word of God and the graffiti of man is now. This book will make that difference crystal clear.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER EXCELLENT STORY IN THE EAGLE SQUADRON TRILOGY.......2006-03-05

Book #3 - An excellent addition to the Eagle Squadron, Delta Force trilogy.
Captain Sarah Fox is given a "light" job because of her injury [in the previous book]- Guard duty to the renowned expert in nuclear fusion, Dr. Hawk Lemay.
He is suspicious of her assignment to be his body guard and yet feels that he must protect her. [little does she know]

She just about blows it in personally attacking Prince Jibril and causes a stand off with his royal body guards.
Very dangerous. And then she finds out that Hawk wants to meet with Jibril.
Jibril informs Hawk that someone has put out a contract on him.
            Whoa! the bullets start flying.
            So do the hormones.
You will love the inbetween lines of the story and these two characters emotional mix-ups.

Later we are again brought up to date with Flynn and Rafe and their lady friends. Yup! the Squadron does finally show up - great characters - plenty of action - great death threats - enough emotional instability for our characters.

GREATLY RECOMMENDED - for a military trilogy --M

5 out of 5 stars Great Plot and Heroine.......2003-11-19

Having read the first two offerings in Ms Weaver's Eagle Squadron, this book is a wonderful addition to the trilogy. The heroine is both heroic and vulnerable. The hero is a wonderful blend of both alpha and beta male, which is often missing in the military romances.

The plot is unique and revolves around the scientific discoveries of a scientist who is just too honorable for his own good. The plot moves quickly with many twists and turns. Her loyal readers will be pleased to find the same comradery found in the first two books between members of this special squadron. Only this time it is made more special when their lone female compatriot is threatend on the latest mission for the Eagle Squadron. Yet it is her heart that she is worried about. Readers will enjoy her struggle to define the perameters of Captain Sarah Fox the warrior and MS. Sarah Fox the woman.

Readers who enjoy Catherine Mann, Candace Irvin, Merline Lovelace and Suzanne Brockmann will enjoy Ms Weaver's contribution to the growing number of military romances that have become popular with romance readers.

5 out of 5 stars For The Teacher in All of Us.......2005-12-15

We all remember the one teacher; that one person who saw the spark down inside and caused it to ignite. And, we've all been a teacher. In one way or another, each of us has passed on something, knowledge, skill, or wisdom, to someone else. The Heart of a Teacher is about all the teachers who have impacted us and the teacher in each of us.
From the famous to the not-so-famous, Wayne Holmes has collected over fifty stories to inspire. Stories that spark memories. Others remind us that we are all teachers and we are all students.
As I read I thought of Mrs. Whitt, the teacher who understood the complications in my home. I remembered the young man in a Junior High English class who remembered me when I substituted in his high school English class. The angry adolescent girl who played shortstop on the softball team I coached. Mr. Weimer, oh how could I forget Mr. Weiner? He promised me that I would love science before the end of the first quarter of school. He fulfilled that promise.
This gift book is not just for giving to a favorite teacher, but a good gift for mothers, Little League coaches, Sunday School teachers, or the person who taught you to knit. The Heart of a Teacher is a gift for you.

5 out of 5 stars The Heart of a Teacher by Wayne Holmes.......2005-11-17

Wayne Holmes has done it again! He should wind up in the principal's office for this one. Yep, march him straight to the principal, sit him down, and give him a well-deserved commendation for his writing about teachers. The heart, soul, energy, enthusiasm, and dedication exemplified in this book will spark memories of mentors who made a difference in your academic and personal life and inspire all teachers (new or experienced) to greatness. It is more than a work of art; it is a work of heart that shines through each page-turning story. A great read ... buy one for every teacher on your Christmas gift-giving list!

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Not your typical teacher book..........2005-10-13

When I picked up "The Heart of a Teacher" I expected more of the usual teacher gift books that grace my shelf (and sometimes my trash can ;-). As a teacher of many years, I would trade all the other books that expound the greatness of teachers for this one thought provoking book.

What makes The Heart of a Teacher different?

This compilation of stories truly represents the "heart" of the best. There are no platitudes or sweet quotes. Each story challenges the reader to grow closer to the Master Teacher.

The authors range from well known writers to everyday folks willing to share what God has revealed to them. Pick up a copy of this beautiful book. You won't be disappointed.

Actually, pick up several. You won't be able to keep it to yourself.

Book Review - The Heart of a Teacher
            Viola Ruelke Gommer -Dallas, PA

Wayne Holmes has gathered stories of how one person can influence the life of another. The persons he points to are teachers and students. Not all the teachers are adults and not all the learners are children. Compiler Holmes highlights what the heart of a teacher can provide the student...nurturing, example, strength, love, inspiration, wisdom, encouragement, compassion.

You will recognize the names of some of the story tellers. There are others whose names you have not seen before. All of them offer heart felt experiences. They changed lives in very positive ways...one life at a time. We are each called to touch the lives of those we meet each day. We never know how a word, action or even a smile can impact one person's day, one person's life.

This is a wonderful gift for teachers. But don't stop there. Anyone who cares about others will appreciate the lessons shared by each story teller. This is a great gift book for teens, young adults, and adults at any stage in life. It is a book the family can enjoy reading together...one story at a time.

Take the lesson from each story and begin a new day for yourself with its wisdom. Then, "Keep on doing the things you have learned..." ( Philippians 4: 9a)

5 out of 5 stars Not Just for School Teachers.......2005-09-15

From early childhood to college educators, this book will provide inspiration, affirmation, and light humor. I'm a substitute high school teacher and took this beautiful book to work with me. During the day I was able to read the snippets of well written stories by a variety of writers. Then I showed The Heart of a Teacher to others who were impressed and interested in it too. What a wonderful read. I recommend it if you're an educator but also as a positive, meaningful gift for anyone who touches the life of a child.
