Book Description
Middle school is all about change. In the opening section, girls take a quiz to determine how they respond to change, then receive tips on how to cope with the big changes that they're getting ready to face as they start middle school- switching classes, getting up earlier, and having their own lockers, all while learning to manage a new school, new teachers, new friends, and LOTS more homework and activities! The secret to feeling more confident as she starts middle school is having a little insight into what to expect. This book provides that information as well as "Smart Girl's tips" from girls who have already made the grade in the big school.

Not that great... :(.......2007-10-03
I got this book from the library, because even though I'm homeschooled, I was hoping it might give me tips on studying for tests doing homework, and other such things. The only thing in there I didn't really know before was how to place things in your backpack to make it not so heavy. And their schedule for getting ready in the morning was not bad either. Also, the "After School" section, gave you pretty good advice on tryouts and how much is too much activities. But being as to how that's just about two thirds of the book I'd say it's not worth your money. Also they make middle school sound scarier than I think it really is. For example, they said "Picture yourself having a good time in middle school." They make it sound like you're going to a different country! So overall, you might get it at the library, but I wouldn't buy it.
Smart Giirls Guide.......2007-10-03
My daughter started middle school this year and has read this book from cover to cover at least 5 times. She has always liked American Girl books and I don't have to worry about her reading inappropriate material. Highly recommend for any girl starting middle school.
Another American Girl Success.......2007-01-12
My daughter will be entering middle school next year. As far as books go, this one will help her more than any other I've seen. Every book in this series has been a hit and this one is no exception.
Not that helpful.......2007-01-02
My eleven year old daughter and i read it. It was not that helpful. Everything in there she already knew. I recomend it if you were homeschooled but otherwise it's not that great.

Fun book and great beanbags.......2007-06-24
I loved the hole pack. I was trying to find a cheap set of juggling balls to to start learning, when I saw this pack i didn't notice that the beanbags weren't balls but cubes and I was a bit worried at first. Anyway they are great, well balanced, with the right weight, and the unusual format is perfect to beginners, since you will drop them a lot they won't roll away from you like the rounds' ones.
Learned in 2 hours!.......2007-04-06
I'm not kidding... I did. The juggling balls are a perfect fit to anyone's hand. I bought the kit because I needed to learn how to juggle for a class, and I got an A! Pretty good for a first timer! Besides, it's a great exercise for your arms.. try it for a couple of hours and you'll see the effects!
Great book for a beginning juggler!.......2007-03-27
I bought this book after seeing a few friends juggling and finding the book on sale at my local Borders store. I didn't think it would take me long to get the hang of throwing and catching three beanbags and now, almost 6 months after buying the book, I am quite proficient with a 3 ball cascade, making a few catches with a 4 ball fountain, and I've been bought juggling clubs!
I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to get into juggling, for fun or sport, it's simple to use and fun to follow along with. The only thing I do not like is that the book's format makes you wish it was spiral bound or bound in a way it can easily be laid flat.
great dealer.......2007-01-10
This person is a great dealer with fast prompt service. Would buy from again.
Excellent For Beginners.......2006-08-04
Within an hour of getting this book, I was able to juggle ( though not skillfully at all)three balls. Granted, I've had a little bit of prior juggling experience from years and years ago, so I wasn't totally unfamiliar with the motions. The instructions were very clear and so were the illustrations after I used a hi-liter to keep track of the otherwise black and white balls.
Book Description
The bestselling author of How to Think Like Leonardo DaVinci shows how learning to juggle literally and metaphorically will help you become better at what you do, both in business and in life.
As we struggle to get more done in less time, to balance our work and our personal life, and to adapt to constant change, we often feel that we're "juggling too many balls." Now, in More Balls Than Hands, leading organizational consultant Michael J. Gelb, a former professional juggler, shows us how to keep all those balls in the air.
The first lesson in juggling is...let the ball drop. Beginning with this first counterintuitive lesson, Michael J. Gelb offers proven methods that organizations can use to create a "mistake positive" culture, showing how any business can flourish and succeed if it sets the stage for learning, growth, and innovation in the workplace. In addition, Gelb introduces five "Keys to High Performance Learning" that offer immediately applicable strategies for strengthening anyone's learning speed and power. For people eager to increase their learning potential, ratchet up their productivity, and teach others to do the same, More Balls than Hands communicates life lessons in a vivid, completely original, and utterly entertaining way.

Liberate your Heart, Body, Mind, and Soul.......2006-02-17
If only I could have started my life with the wisdom in this magnificent book!
This important book by the best-selling author of "How to Think Like Leonardo Da Vinci" has many virtues, but its shining achievement is to introduce the reader to a "mistake-positive" way of life and being. In the time since reading it, I am finding myself transforming, in very positive ways, how I approach life, and how I interpret and experience myself and others. Increasing energy, enthusiasm, openness, and resilience to the challenges of life are a few of the benefits that have begun to manifest themselves. My personal and professional relationships are improving. I feel more alive and excited about my future than I have in years. While perfectionism has advantages, it also has many disadvantages-it can hold one back from full participation in life, and it can interfere with one's resilience in bouncing back from failures. This book is excellent medicine for perfectionists.
Michael Gelb is a pioneer in the fields of accelerated learning, creative thinking, and leadership development, and President of High Performance Learning, which he founded thirty years ago. In "More Balls Than Hands" (This title often generates laughs when I mention it to women!) Michael masterfully brings to life five principles of high performance learning and living:
1. Create a clear vision of what you want, and then keep comparing your vision with reality, thus stimulating your brain's natural success mechanism to bring reality in line with your vision.
2. Transform your attitude toward mistakes and failure, thereby liberating tremendous energy and enthusiasm for learning and growth.
3. Unleash your natural genius through the power of play.
4. Achieve more with less effort by cultivating relaxed concentration.
5. Develop your coaching skills so you can bring out the best in people at work and at home.
Throughout the book he ties all these themes together with the powerful metaphor of juggling. As he says at the end of the book:
"The juggling metaphor can serve as an inspiring reminder of the secret of life. Is there one word that expresses that secret? Yes. The word is *balance*."
This book is about much more than learning and juggling the demands of today's world. It is about the secret of life-how to live well and wisely, how to create the lives and world we want, written by someone who lives what he speaks. The book is a true education, a treasure trove of wisdom, rich with colorful, compelling examples and illustrations. A sheer pleasure to read!
A Good Read!.......2004-08-30
The best and most useful part of this book comes near the end, where author Michael J. Gelb gets down to basics and offers instructions on how to juggle. The first part of the book consists of a series of exhortations and homilies about the advisability of relaxing, letting yourself make mistakes, practicing to be perfect and other personal attitude guidance. Those who thirst for such encouragement will find the first part of this book a godsend. It includes quotations from Lao Tse, Vince Lombardi and Leonardo da Vinci. All of the advice is highly meritorious, even the advice that you ought to take a break or two every day to juggle. That looks like fun whether you favor New Age nostrums or not. We recommend this book to anyone who must multi-task. Even if juggling doesn't smooth out your work life, at least it will help you relax.
I'm Inspired!.......2003-08-31
Every time I read one of Michael's books, I feel inspired for greatness, and this book is no exception. Michael has a gift of taking things that are familiar and looking at and applying them in unique ways. In this book, Michael talks about the importance of creating mistakes in a safe environment and using them to accelerate learning to become a better leader, coach, parent, or person. He makes it feel safe to venture out into new territory by teaching that success means pursuing your goals and dreams with much childlike passion that success and failure become irrelevant. I especially love how he frames examples throughout the book with expert quotes that provide meaningful and often thought-provoking context. The quote by Dr. Glenn Doman, Institute for the Achievement of Human Potential, provoked a great family discussion about how important it is for a child to view learning as fun and the positive impact a person can have to help inspire that belief. In the last section of the book, Michael takes a unique approach to teaching juggling, in which he applies all the principles in the book. I never would have thought that dropping balls on purpose would help me learn to juggle, but it did. And it gave me a new confidence that I can do anything!
Metaphor of the Millennium.......2003-08-24
Michael Gelb has captured the metaphor of the millennium in juggling. It is something that jugglers and non-jugglers alike can relate to at a gut level, because most of us have anything but time on our hands. A single issue of the New York Times is said to contain more information than the average person in the Middle Ages was exposed to in a lifetime. And it just starts there. MORE BALLS THAN HANDS gives you more than just the metaphor, but stories and testimonials from the workplace, as well as practical coaching on how to juggle. The book is readable and doable, and can be enjoyed on many levels. The only thing that could make it even better would be illustrations for the tips on the advanced juggling beyond 3 balls. ...

Okay, buy this book. If you are a beginner, then you won't be for long. Even though I am only in week one, I can get three balls going for about 3-4 cycles, then I run out of room. Stupid walls!
Anyway, this is the book for you.
Easy and fun.......2000-03-11
As a kid I always wanted to learn to juggle but could never figure it out. After 15 minutes with this book I was juggling away. It was very easy to learn and lots of fun. I am afraid I am turning into an addict. I have gotten through all the basic tricks in about a week and enjoy impressing my friends with what they think are difficult tricks. It is really a great hobby and this is a great book to get someone started.

Claude Shannon worked on juggling!.......2007-06-30
Polster manages to take the innocuous pastime of juggling and segue from it into number theory. The movement of balls is shown to map naturally into the concepts of finite state graphs. Bringing in ideas of permutations. And introducing juggling matrices!
Plus, he points out that the founder of Information Theory, Claude Shannon, was also interested in the theory of juggling. Several crucial juggling theorems were discovered by Shannon and are named after him. For readers familiar with Shannon in computing, the book gives a look at relatively little known research by him.

Social Commentary Gone Wrong.......2002-04-28
This book is a prime example of one where you can admire the author's writing skill, find it hard to put down, perhaps acquire a grain of insight into the human condition, and still intensely dislike the book. It is, indeed, a thriller. Things constantly go wrong with the protagonist's plans to enrich himself, forcing him to improvise. Even though this pretentious working-class Englishman is not likeable in the slightest, the reader feels compelled to find out how he's going to deal with each unforeseen obstacle. In addition to creating a fast paced story of love and crime, Parks may also have something to say about the consequences of social class and economic disparity. By depriving the central character of any sense of moral integrity, however, Parks has taken too great a risk. A reader needs to connect with the main character in some way, and to finish the book with some sense of time not wasted. I suspect that this clueless character was intended to be funny, or darkly funny, or scarily familiar, but I'm at a loss to see the humor, and the class consciousness may lose impact in transition across the Atlantic.
Great.......2001-12-20
Parks use of the sympathetic narrator is ingenious. Through all Morris' self-congratulatory highs to his self-loathing lows, the narrator keeps us tuned in to the thought process of this likeable 'serial killer.' The Fowles similariy struck me as well, especially in another book of his, Shear. However, I emailed Tim Parks asking how he felt about John Fowles, and he claimed not to be a fan. Either way, both are master writers, and for my money, Tim Parks is the best writer around. Mimi's Ghost, the sequel to this book, is an absolute must read, as are Shear, Europa and Goodness, to name but a few.
Parks: the next Fowles?.......2001-11-20
This is the first book I've read by Tim Parks and I plan to follow it up immediately with the sequel, "Mimi's Ghost". Park's style can be compared favorably to a young John Fowles' , especially his earlier works such as "The Magus" and "The Collector".
As in "The Collecter", Parks creates a disturbing story told from the perpetrator's POV wherin the main character attempts to justify his own deviant behavior and digs himself deeper and deeper into into trouble. The effect is chilling and Park's eye for detail is evident throughout, not surprising as the book's main character is an English teacher in Verona, Italy where the dust jacket states that Parks himself teaches English. Hopefully that's where his similarity to the books main character, Morris Duckworth ends.
Great Book.......2001-07-29
This book is a real page turner and I really loved reading this book. This is the first Tim Parks book I have read but It won't be the last. I highly recommend reading this book.
Great blend of gruesome murders and macabre humor.......2001-03-11
Tim Parks has it down for those looking for a touch of humor in the scrutinized look into a killer. Far superior to the latest Thomas Harris try, Hannibal, although that may not be a good comparison. Give this author a try if you like alternating between feelings of nausea and laughter. The writing is solid, the psychology compelling, and the story moves along quickly. Great effort.

Making Your Own Jumps.......2005-10-21
does not really tell how to make them-- only some pictures-- save the money and go to some horse trial facility websites for similar or better pictures.
Complete waste of money.......2005-10-14
This is not a "book", this is barely even a "pamphlet". Complete waste of money!
A COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY.......2005-07-31
I was shocked when this "book" arrived. 24 pages hardly constitues a "Book". It is a brief pamphlet that gives a 101 of (mostly cross country) jump design. No instructions on how to "make your own jumps" here. Don't waste your money on this one.
Beware!!.......2005-06-28
This book is NOT for a person that want's to know how to build jumps by a step by step process. It has some information on how to build nice cross country fences. But, I was unable to use this book to build any arena fences. I would spend your money on something else!
Simple and complete.......2004-08-11
This book looks geared to children, but I found it insightful and detail oriented. It has great suggestions for building jumps, and includes the "finishing touches" a person might not think of on their own. The book is also well illustrated, giving lots of examples of easy-to build obstacles. One of my favorite references.

A good book for all skill levels.......2006-11-03
I'm a pretty skilled 3 ball juggler and there are still lots of things in Franco's book that I had never thought about. It includes sections on body throws, bounce tricks, starts, finishes, spin tricks, etc, all of which are interesting and could be included into a 3 ball routine, of which he includes several samples for different skill levels at the end. Also in this book, there is a chapter on learning how to juggle and basic tricks for someone who has never juggled before, but this is not a book that I would reccommend for a first-timer, since there aren't too many pictures and the explanation can be a bit hard to follow at times.
After all of the juggling sections there the other part of the title: mastering the headroll. This is an incredibly difficult skill and Franco, obviously a master, does a good job of breaking it down, though practice is the only thing that will really help you get better with this.
And finally, there are the 56 photographs at the end of the book of famous jugglers doing what they do best, in particular featuring their headrolls, all of which are great. Anyone who is interested in the history and culture of juggling will love this section and even if you're not, many of them are wonderful photos in their own right. So all considered, this is a great book where there is a generally a deart of great books: 3 ball juggling.
A must for the juggler in you........1998-07-21
This a must buy for jugglers. Franco's book contains a unique collection of classic photos coupled with an extremely conprehensive array of 3 ball tricks ranging from the cascade to complex body rolls and flourishes. But perhaps the most valuable element of the book is his "Mastering the Headroll" section which provides everything one could every wish to now in a step-by-step approach to learning all the varitions of this exquisive move.

From Cincinnati.......2005-04-28
I don't read literature generally, and read even less African literature (I think perhaps Chinua Achebe's "A Man of The People" is the only other), but I really loved reading this book.
Dow's style is conversational, and she is able to tell this story both in the voice of the girl it is about, as well as in that of the woman she's become. More than once I thought about how Harper Lee did the same thing in "To Kill a Mockingbird." Their stories are about larger ideas and problems, but they so richly describe childhood that at times you feel as if you're actually there in the story. (The obviously important thing about comparative literature is that you learn about differences and similarities, and Dow shows this American how alike children in Ohio are to those in Botswana.)
I was particularly taken with Dow's deliberate revelation of courtship and marriage between Nei's grandparents. I read one passage over and again three times in one sitting, because it is so beautifully described, and in such an endearing context.
I don't pretend to completely understand how difficult it can be to straddle two strikingly different "worlds," but after reading this story I find myself a bit closer.
Customer Reviews:
I love this book.......2005-06-26
Dancey's encyclopedia is the bible of ball juggling in my account. He has gathered amazingly many tricks, and does a good job explaining them too, often using helpful drawings. The fact that the book is all about ball juggling gives it a depth in ball-tricks that other books, written more generally about juggling, often lack. The structure of the book, giving the tricks in alphabetical order, makes it easy to find what you are looking for. It also encourages going back and forth in the book, which I find is a great way to constantly find new tricks to learn. Very inspirational.
Must have!.......2005-02-04
I love this book.
Easy to read and understand. Also, it is extremely funny.
