Nothing but raves.......2007-09-29
After reading and enjoying this book, I purchased several copies to give as gifts. The recipents gave the book raving reports and consider it one of the best gifts ever received. It is also a book that will be consulted over and over again as it is informative, entertaining and humorous.
Go from Beginning Watcher to Vivid Describer of the Action.......2007-09-18
Watching Baseball Smarter will appeal to youngsters around 9-12 who are eager to grab as much baseball knowledge as possible by attending and watching games on television. For those young people, scoring, colorful terms, and obscure rules can make the game seem more mysterious than it is. At the same time, learn those elements of active watching and a youngster can develop the basics to enjoy being a lifelong fan.
If someone had given me this book at that age, I would have treasured Watching Baseball Smarter above all over gifts I got that at that time. I would have been most thrilled by the illustrations of how the various pitches are thrown.
Remember that observation when you consider if you know any budding fans who would be thrilled to have this book.
As for the claim that the book is also for semi-experts and deeply serious geeks, I don't think so. I didn't see any material that wasn't well known to me by the time I was 15. And I was hardly a semi-expert or a deeply serious geek. I just enjoyed watching and attending the games.
Don't give this book to a serious baseball fan; you'll embarrass yourself if you do.
Here are few questions to test your ability to enjoy the book:
1. What is the infield fly rule?
2. What is a double switch?
3. What is a catcher's earned run average?
4. What is a safety squeeze?
5. How do you keep score?
If know all five, this book isn't for you. If you know four, you'll get an occasional nugget from the book. If you know three or fewer, this book is a good choice for you.
On this reading, the main pleasure was from remembering when I first learned the material and from an occasional bit of trivia that was new to me. The former pleasure was what kept me reading, and I was disappointed that the book was aimed mostly at an elementary level . . . having found the subtitle to be misleading in terms of the book's relevance for me.

Baseball Fan's Good Guide.......2007-09-10
As a sixty year baseball fan, I think I know most everything about the game. However, Zack came up with some new/clarifying information for me. By the way, the game has changed since I started following it in the mid-1940s.
pages missing.......2007-09-08
Pages 79 to 110 are completely missing.
If binding is baseball, the people who did the binding would be kicked out of bush league.
Also, the information is very elementary and meant basically for elementary students.
baseball lover/ baseball newbie - must have........2007-08-27

I liked the instructional/assignment approach. Although already an accomplished fine art nude photographer, I like the stimulation provided by the author to attempt new approaches to a familiar subject.
Book Description
The third in the Quickstart dance series deals with the most popular dance in the world from America's most popular author of books on the topic of dance.
100 Swing Variations with Applications in the following 4 Rhythms:
1. Single - Street or Club
2. Double - Jitterbug
3. Double - Kick
4. Triple - East Coast Swing
This text is presented in a logical, easy to understand, cumulative format that includes all the basic and advanced skills necessary for the successful learning, partnering, and teaching of Swing dancing.
Quickstart to Swing is written with Jeff Allen's noted kinesiological approach along with the mental and physical attitudes and philosophies that will make any level dancer successful.
Customer Reviews:
Lots of room for improvement.......2005-11-02
I used to do a fair amount of swing dancing (east coast) when it was very popular in the late 90's and am a bronze level (i.e., novice) ballroom dancer. I wanted a bit of a refresher and a way to expand some of my swing dancing patterns. So despite the negative reviews, I had high hopes for this book. First, the positive. Allen is very focused on the technical aspects of swing dancing and the book is filled with detailed instruction on how to do the little things correctly -- this is essential because it allows you to dance with anyone familiar with swing dancing (as opposed to the club style of dancing which is very idiosyncratic and only allows you to dance effetively with those who are familiar with the particular club's (or area's) style). Unfortunately -- as other reviewers have noted -- his writing is extremely weak. There are frequent grammatical errors and his prose is very, very difficult to follow. In a book that is geared toward instruction and teaching, this -- of course -- is a huge weakness. If you're very patient and focused, and don't mind really working through his explanations, you'll probably get something out of the book. Realistically though, it would be much easier and quicker (and only slightly more expensive) to learn basic swing dancing by finding a good instructor for group lessons.
Trustworthy - Absolutely!.......2005-10-15
Not only is this book loaded with the best technique from the beginner through advanced level, but the author will actually help you with your dancing through the email process! As suggested by a former reviewer I called and did in fact reach the author. He said that the 800# was used primarily for sales and for hiring him as a coach or a teacher. All books can be returned through the store from which they were purchased in a reasonable amount of time but NOT after they are used.
My Swing dancing has improved exponentially since applying Allen's techniques. I also learned that you may substitute several rhythms of Swing interchangeably while dancing without disrupting your partner - what fun!! The flick - ball - change is a fabulous substitute for the Swing Rock! Steps like the "Jig Walks" and all kinds of pretzel variations to make dancing exciting with much less boring repetition. Good work, great book.
Confusing & False Advertising.......2005-09-03
I have only read a little bit of this book, but from the very beginning it is very confusing. Also, it seems to have many typographical errors.
At the beginning of the book there is a "Warning-Disclaimer" which states, in part, "there may be mistakes, both typographical and in content." At the end of the Warning-Disclaimer, it states in bold letters, "If you do not wish to be bound by the above, you may return this book to the publisher, in marketable condition, for a full refund."
I called the publisher about this. The author himself, Jeff Allen, answered the phone. I said that I wanted to return it in accordance with the Warning-Disclaimer, but he absolutely refused.
I feel that this book is DEFINITELY NOT FOR BEGINNERS and contains what you could more or less call FALSE ADVERTISING.
This Book Delivered for ME!.......2005-07-16
I bought this book three years ago based on one of favorable reviews by the party known as Dance Reviewer. Without fear of contradiction I would like to mention two points: 1. I have yet to have a dance teacher that had the knowledge or the ability to disseminate that knowledge, as found in this comprehensive Swing manual. 2. The more I learn about Swing dance specifically and dance in general I grow to appreciate the contents of Jeff Allen's book. Buy it if you have any interest in Swing dance!
You'll Cherish It .......2005-07-12
While there may be some grammatical flaws in this book, there are absolutely none in the dance technique discussed and taught by Allen. If you're a dancer you must own this book. If you're a Swing dancer you have to have this book. If you're a NEW dancer you need to have this book, I promise all three categories you'll cherish it in the long run! There are paragraphs that are so chock full of dancing pearls that they are worth the price of admission by themselves.

SO ****ING BORING.......2006-09-17
This book, is so hard to read, i don't know how any one could possibly turn a book that i, a darkroom hobbist my self could have wirtten in perhaps two hundered pages into a 464 page snooz fest. he includes all this unessiccary stuff aout how the film works and summerizeds stuff hes going to explain before he explains it... WHO CARES!!?? if i wanted to know how film works id buy a book on film! If you want to set up a drak room, eihter take a class, or buy a diffent book, thats not so hard to read, its basicly a text book. is it a bad book? nay, but don't expect to use it as a instruction manual, it has about fifty pages of nonsense between the actaul process of making a god damn darkroom!
Superb Darkroom Manual.......2005-12-17
This book by Tom Grimm is by far the most comprehensive and practical handbook on darkroom information and procedures that I have yet read. I have been involved in photography since the early 1950's and this is one of the best books on this aspect of photography that I own. I believe it surpasses that excellent book "Enlarging" by Jacobson and Mannheim that I also own and still use (1975 edition). I just do not understand the previous criticism made that the book requires "a degree" to understand it! The only criticism I would make is that products listed by the author are not always available to UK photographers, as it has, naturally, an American bias, however, even with that small defecit, the book is well worth the price!
Best Photography book!.......2004-09-10
This is one of the best photography books around, in my opinion. Very very detailed coverage of most all aspects of B&W and color photography. The author does not assum that you have your very own private dark room and makes sigguestions as to how you can use things you probably allready have around your house instead of expensive photography equipement. For instance, the author sigguests that you might use a fish tank and heater to control the temperature of color chemicals! And I tell you what, that is a lot less expensive compared to buying a rotary processor from Jobo.
The author gives detailed explinations of how processos work, and some hostory behind them. He also lets you just jump ahead to the quick and simple overview. This lets you learn about what your doing, if you new to the area, or get a quick review if you're not sure your quite remember how to do something.
Truly a great book, or even textbook for college classes.
Terrible book!.......2001-07-26
I am writing this review in order to warn new-comers to the field of photography against buying it. Although the title specifies, "for beginners through experts," this book almost requires a degree to comprehend it. Techniques discussed are not for beginners! The book insists you need to spend vast amounts of money and time to develop prints; this is untrue. In fact, a beginner would need to read 6 chapters of the book, which are extremely confusing, before being able to develop a black-and-white print. The process could quite easily be explained in less than a page.
In short, I do not recommend anyone buy this terrible book.
This "Basic" Darkroom Book has it ALL........1999-08-14
As it says on the book's cover, for beginners through experts. Basic indeed! The author covers virtually every subject in photofinishing from basic black & white printing through color processing & printing with various films, papers and chemistry to delving into the digital darkroom! The author explains each subject in entertaining and conversational style to build the foundation for a more detailed and thorough explanation of the science & art of custom darkroom procedures and techniques. Photographs, illustrations and tables compliment the text. Loaded with information making it a valuable reference book even for those of us who have been doing custom black & white and color darkroom work for 20 years! If you have only one book on this subject, this is the book to own. The Basic Darkroom Book third edition is a must have.

One Knitters Opinion.......2000-06-14
I enjoy the simplicity and straight forwardness of this knitting book a great deal. The instructions have been well written and are easy to follow. It seems that almost every topic a new or an advanced knitter would need reference to, is included. Examples of the vast subjects covered are; basic knitting techniques, finishing processes, how to correct mistakes, and patterns suitable for the entire family. There is even a library of stitches included. This text is definately worth it's cost.

A whole new way to learn to ski. NO DORKY WEDGE TO UN-LEARN.......2007-04-08

Great tutorial book.......2006-11-16
This book has what you need to make progress as a skier. The photo sequences are highlighted to point out the objective. Any individual lesson or exercise can be used independently - so you can pick one as a refresher to practice on. The lessons are well sequenced with accurate and detailed descriptions of exercises. The book is readable and coherent.
There are a few of defenders of Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) and other ski instruction books that have posted here and given what I think are unfair low ratings. I think they are somewhat narrow in their criticism. They seem to focus on the fact that he is not preaching the "approved" PSIA method. So what? Is there only one way to teach someone how to ski?
I personally used this book and advanced my ski skill and confidence in a few weeks, after having stagnated for a couple of years. I had taken numerous lessons from PSIA intructors and progress was slow. My opinion is that most self-motivated skiers could benefit from the lessons in this book (at a low price). Give it an honest try and then go pay $75 for a PSIA "approved" lesson and see which one gave you more insight and advancement. Oh my, Mr. Harb challenged the Ski Instructors PSIA church!
For us (ahem!) seasoned skiers.......2006-04-08
I've been skiing for over thirty years so I know everything right? Ha! My first time on modern shaped skis was pretty well...interesting.
I would strongly recommend this to anyone particularly those of us who have to "unlearn" some of the things we've become accustomed to doing in order to get the most out of modern skis. At the very least, we won't be giving our kids outdated advice!
Awesome ski instruction system.......2006-03-22
I have experienced first hand instruction with this system. I have also taken the PSIA lessons offered at many ski areas. If you don't want to be stuck in the wedge forever then have a look at this. Harald Harb's PMTS is a systematic approach that will get you skiing better than 90% of the people you see skiing on any given day. Don't beleive the hype about out of the mainstream. They have something here. Believe it, this system works. If you want to carve and rip this is it!
