Book Description

A woman at the icy end of the sea yearns to reach the stars but her broomstick refuses to fly. When a mysterious raven lures her into daunting adventures, with wide-ranging implications for the well-being of all living things, she learns that neither ghosts nor monsters are her deadliest adversaries, but the whisperings of her own fears. Fighting her way through her darkest nightmares the woman prevails, but realizes in the end that each man alone must create his heaven or his hell on earth. THE WOMAN AND THE RAVEN is a poetic myth about the importance of the words we say to ourselves, and others.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good ancient, mythical story.......2007-07-20

Based on Icelandic myths, this story takes place in the distant past, when trolls and elves still walked the earth. A woman lives alone in a cottage, far from anyone else. It is full to overflowing with books, parchments and scrolls, many written in languages that were dead even back then. She yearns to return to the stars, but her broomstick refuses to function, for she has lost the magic.

A raven-wizard gives her three tasks, in order to help heal a broken world. The woman must return a runic sword to its proper owner, a knight who has been dead for many years. She must, single-handedly, defeat a hideous wyvern living in a huge lake (think of the Loch Ness Monster, but with a nastier disposition). Then, the woman must find and return a large blue gem, the Stone of Antariel, to its rightful owners, a race of elves. It's not as easy as it sounds; the forces of evil are keeping a close eye on the woman and her progress.

This story has a different, almost mystical, feel to it, and it's really good. It's a short novel, about 100 pages, and anyone who enjoys ancient, mythical stories will enjoy this one.

4 out of 5 stars Inner demons.......2007-06-01

Reviewed by Susan Pettrone for Reader Views (5/07)

In this somewhat slim volume, a world of mystical, magical life begins. Set in an icy world filled with wintry beauty, we meet a woman on the first page of "The Woman and The Raven," who though strong in her independence, is caught within a nightmare of her own making. Though she seems satisfied carving a life for herself out of what the wintry land around her offers, still she dreams of more. Her dreams, incantations and legends interwoven within this book, are simple yet so complex, that at times the reader isn't sure what is happening is within the present, the past or possibly the future. Her nightmares become reality as she is faced not with the demons and monsters most are afraid of, but terrors which are hers alone.

There is no doubt in the mind of the reader that this woman is fantastical in many ways, but as the story grows, the legends and magical life of this woman create a tapestry of such contrast between beauty and horror that the ending of the book leaves the reader realizing that the monsters she battled were not of the real world around her but were monsters created of her own fears. These fears are those which live within her heart....fears which she alone must face and overcome.

The mood set within the pages of "The Woman and The Raven" is also touched by this woman, for her experiences had the ability to take this reader from a small room in a home amidst a big city and transport her to a fortress of elves within a far away land. This was a book where I found myself enraptured with the story within while feeling an odd sense of internal connection while visiting this land so different from my own. Perhaps it was because this woman was battling demons not unlike many we battle each day or perhaps it was because she seemed to be someone we all have known at one time in our lives. Whatever the reason, "The Woman and The Raven" was a book this reader will not long forget and which will I expect, be one drawn from the shelves and experienced over and over again, each time anew as the woman within makes discoveries, not unlike those many of us make every day.

3 out of 5 stars Mythic fantasy about Iceland.......2007-04-18

This brief book reads like a mythic tale out of Icelandic folklore--and perhaps it is. The author spent time as writer in residence at the cultural center in Gunnarssfnun, Iceland, and thanks the people for their songs and stories.

The story takes place at a time "when trolls and elves roamed the earth." The unknown woman heroine, the chief character, is a magic-user, but she can no longer fly to the stars, our ancient home. She is set on a difficult path by a Raven-Wizard: she must use a runic sword, slay a vicious wyvern and recover a lost Elven gem, which gives our world its light. These seem impossible tasks, since she must oppose the Shadow Sorcerer, the evil one loosed upon our world.

The writing has a lyric mystical quality about it, even though it uses simple words; and in a few sentences it reminds us that men can make of Earth either a heaven or a hell.

Armchair Interviews says if mythic fantasy is your forte, then you will want to read this one.

5 out of 5 stars Icelandic alchemy.......2007-04-13

This tale from the Icelandic Eastfjords takes the readers by the hand and leads them through a magic realm of sparkeling snow and colorful skies into legendary lands. As you wonder through winter's wonderland the wind searches your bones, the heart yearns for life light as the stars and you drift into tales within tales, some of them as ancient as archaic fears. Despite the songs and stories contained within a story the tale is not just that. The adventures of the reluctant heroine beset with doubts only serve as a fable - much like Paolo Coelho's Alchemist - for the reader to look inside and change the little voice that we all carry in our head so that it may speak of freedom and success and no longer of defeat and failure.

5 out of 5 stars original and exciting .......2007-03-27

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this original and exciting adventure among trolls and elves. People of legends and sagas come to life and you get to know them as well as your next-door neighbor.

Book Description

As a boy growing up in rural Arkansas, Bob Brewer often heard from his uncle and his great-uncle about a particular tree in the woods, the "Bible Tree," filled with strange carvings. Years later he would learn that this tree was carved with symbols associated with the Knights of the Golden Circle, a Civil War-era secret society that had buried gold coins and other treasure in various remote locations across the South and Southwest in hopes of someday funding a second War Between the States. These secret caches were guarded by sentinels, men whose responsibility it was to watch and protect these sites. To his astonishment, Bob discovered that both his uncle and his great-uncle had been twentieth-century sentinels, and that he had grown up near an important KGC treasure site.

In Shadow of the Sentinel, Bob Brewer and investigative journalist Warren Getler tell the fascinating story of the Knights of the Golden Circle and the hidden caches the KGC established across the country. Brewer reveals how, with agonizing effort, he eventually deciphered the fiendishly complicated KGC codes and ciphers, which drew heavily on images associated with Freemasonry. (Many of the key KGC post-Civil War leaders were Scottish Rite Masons, who used the cover of that secret fraternity to conduct their activities.) Using his knowledge of KGC symbolism to crack coded maps, Brewer has located several KGC caches and has recovered gold coins, guns, and other treasure from some of them.

Shadow of the Sentinel is the most comprehensive account yet of the activities of the KGC after the Civil War and, indeed, into the 1900s. Getler and Brewer suggest that the clandestine network of KGC operatives was far wider than previously thought, and that it included Jesse James, the former Confederate guerrilla whose stage and bank robberies helped to fill KGC treasure chests.

This is a rousing and provocative adventure that weaves together one man's personal quest with an intriguing, little-known chapter in America's hidden history.

4 out of 5 stars If you're interested in treasure stories, you like this book........2007-06-09

I very much enjoyed this book....until the last chapter. My family is from the same area of northwestern Arkansas as original source material for this book. I was able to see a lot of similarity between my family's stories and what is in the book. I thought it was very captivating except for the ending. I felt like there should have been another 100 pages to resolve the details that you are lead to. I was left with my jaw hanging. That being said, I do think it makes a very interesting and provocative read.

3 out of 5 stars Starts Good But Gets Bogged Down.......2007-02-01

Started well but there were chapters that just lagged. It will probably be of more interest to those wishing to decipher treasure signs.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read!.......2006-02-17

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I began and finished it in less than 12 hours. Once I picked it up and started reading it was impossible to stop. I enjoyed the mystery, the history, the captivating writting technique and the fact that you really never get bogged down with one topic or activity of the writers. However, for those of you who have read it, I noticed he never says what was in the trunk that he wasn't supposed to go into. I am very much into Confederate history as well as Jesse Woodson James, so this reveiw may be biased. I have to admit I wanted to grab a shovel and a metal detector and head out West after reading this book. I really believe there is lots of hidden treasure in the South. If this book ain't true and the writer is a lier then I guess it ain't true and the writer is a lier. But, the book is very interesting just the same. If you are a believer of what he writes about, you too could find treasure.

4 out of 5 stars Confederate black helicopters, perhaps?.......2005-11-20

REBEL GOLD is a better than average conspiracy book, if you're into that sort of thing. And it has the added allure of postulating the existence of a fabulous buried treasure.

Written by ex-Vietnam vet Bob Brewer and investigative journalist Warren Getler (Wall Street Journal, International Herald Tribune), REBEL GOLD describes the former's twenty-five year quest to establish the existence and location of Confederate gold and silver caches buried by the pro-secessionist Knights of the Golden Circle in the anticipation that they could one day be used to further a second Civil War. Along the way, Brewer associates the Knights with the Scottish Rite Freemasons, Scottish freedom fighters, the medieval Knights Templar, and the post-Civil War outlaw activities of cousins Jesse Woodson James and Jesse Robert James. (Gee, there was more than one?) Brewer concludes that Jesse and Jesse weren't robbing for personal gain, but to enlarge and help conceal the Confederacy's rainy-day stash.

Brewer's quarter-century involvement with rebel treasure depositories, which are ostensibly scattered over a wide swath of territory in the American Southwest and South, is incremental. Growing up in the Arkansas backwoods, Bob was first exposed to the existence of hidden swag by listening to the recollections, stories, and veiled references by resident old timers. It wasn't until he returned home from Vietnam that Brewer began to take these verbal clues seriously and undertook to systematically correlate and follow widely spread physical mapping clues, principally carvings in the trunks of trees and buried markers. To his credit and the overall story's credibility, Bob did manage to unearth several relatively small troves of buried coins in the area. Later, as his knowledge of the KGC increased and he came into possession of additional coded maps and information, he transferred his attention to a larger area across the state line in Oklahoma, and finally to Arizona's Superstition Mountains. In Oklahoma, he was thwarted by a fellow treasure hunter with whom he'd naively shared knowledge and who allegedly beat him to a significantly large stash of gold in a buried safe. In Arizona (and back in Arkansas), Brewer was, and still is, blocked from unearthing (presumably) major hordes by the fact that the sites are on federal land. And who, in their right mind, wants to share found riches with the dang guv'mint, eh?

Bob's ultimate triumph, if it can be called such, was in identifying the precise but presumed location of the Arizona treasure vault - underneath Picketpost Mountain - after interrelating a myriad of clues - including cliff carvings, buried markers, and coded stone tablets - with the help of a couple of local amateur treasure hunters and a topographical map of the region.

This yarn by Brewer and Getler is a good one, though to be completely believable the reader would, I suspect, had to have been there. Brewer's surmises and intuitive leaps are both numerous and mind-boggling. For instance, concerning an enigmatic stone tablet containing both text and the image of a horse, an image which Brewer had discerned amidst the contour lines and other features of his topo map:

"Bob surmised that the textual clue DON ... was intended to read in reverse, as NOD. If the giant horse's head were to nod ... it would be facing the zone of interest, directly south."

Further, from a newspaper obit about the death of the presumed KGC sentinel Elisha Reavis, Bob's mental contortions are revealed:

"The article reported that a 'Billy G. Knight' - an English 'cowboy' ... had cautioned Reavis a couple of weeks before his mysterious death to 'see a doctor'. Reading between the lines, the 'English cowboy' could easily pass for a medieval Knight Templar, Bob thought. The G could well be a nod toward the hallmark symbol for 'Geometry' (some say, 'God') in Freemasonry. And, he speculated, based on related clues uncovered in Arkansas and Oklahoma, 'William' could suggest William Wallace, the heralded Scottish freedom fighter ..." Yeah, well, like I said, I guess you had to be there.

The thing is, as even Brewer himself recognizes on page 197:

"(The mapmakers) had left behind their signature system of symbolism, too subtle for most to recognize and perhaps too clever for those in the know to be able to follow the encrypted signposts."

So, what was the point of creating maps and clues so arcane and obscure such that die-hard secessionists in future generations might not even be able to recover the treasure? Whatever happened to "keep it simple, stupid"? Indeed, I suspect you could give the same maps and clues to a hundred different cryptologists and come back with a hundred different conclusions. Why should the reader believe Brewer's interpretation, especially as he wasn't (and hasn't been) able to make the major find that would prove him correct?

I'm awarding REBEL GOLD four stars for its interesting premise. Otherwise, it's hard to care. Besides, the symbol "Au" and a figure of the Virgin Mary have just appeared on the trunk of a tree in my yard with her finger pointing down. Hey, Mother, get the shovel! We're gonna be rich, girl!

5 out of 5 stars Exciting new history proven by current day facts.......2005-07-25

First you should know that this is the paperback version of "Shadow of the Sentinel" but you will want both-that for your permanent library and this one for your backpack. I can personally attenst to the signs and symbols referenced as I lived in NW Arkansas in the 1950's and was surrounded by searchers for 'lost Spanish gold'. A true book you will not be able to put down and a search that is far from finished. Well written and extensively researched.

4 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated catalog.......2003-02-16

This exhibition catalog is beautifully illustrated, with many of the photographs extremely clear and all of very high quality. Most inscriptions are readable; larger objects are not just shown whole, but also in detail. It is a pleasure to see some many objects from Tanis included - King Tut has been over-exposed and the Tanis objects are less well-known.

The introductory essays provide useful background information; the catalog item descriptions are useful but of varying depth.

5 out of 5 stars Great companion to a wonderful exhibit.......2002-09-16

The Quest for Immortality now at the National Gallery in Washington, DC is an eye-popping collection of famous items and unseen wonders from Cairo's Egyptian Museum. With the images fresh in your mind of the originals use the catalog articles to expand your knowledge of Queen Ahhotep and her jewels or the beauty of Nakhtmin's wife.

Don't miss my favorites the charming Ptolemaic bronze cat votive and the lapis lazuli Goddess Maat from the Third Intermediate Period.

The entire Yukon series along with the Alaskan Quest series, was a romantic and historical adventure in the northern wilderness. This is a trip not to pass up.

5 out of 5 stars Great Historical Fiction/Romance.......2006-11-30

This novel takes place during the Yukon gold rush. It captivates you with the struggles of the sweet, privileged Grace Hawkins and tenacious, out spoken Karen Pierce as they flee Martin Paxton--the man who has sworn to ruin the Hawkins forever. From the disguised flight from her fiance to rafting the rapids of the Yukon, this book series holds more than one interesting (and heartbreaking) situation after another.

5 out of 5 stars Very good!.......2006-10-11

I am very surprised at the first two reviews!! I loved this series. I read all 3 books in about 3 weeks. They are wonderfully done, with history, romance, action, and great characters. You should see for yourself!!

3 out of 5 stars Next two books are better.......2006-09-15

This was the first book in the Yukon Quest series. I was somewhat dissapointed with this book. It wasn't fast paced enough for me. However, I did finish the book and went on to read the second and third book of the series and would highly recommend them! Like I said, the first book is a little difficult to get through but it is a must read in order to fully understand the other two book of the series.

5 out of 5 stars I'd Give It 100 Stars If There Was Room!!!.......2006-07-09

Treasures of the North was an awesome book. Don't listen to anyone who says they couldn't get into it. They must be reading an entirely different book because what I read was a thrilling fast pace book filled with romance and interesting plots. It's about a 20 year old named Grace who has to escape to Alaska when she is being forced ot marry a man who is evil and abusive, Martin Paxton. Grace escapes with her teacher who is also her best friend, Karen. While traveling there she falls in love with the captain, Peter Colton. 4 out of 5 stars Nancy Drew: The Quest of the Missing Map .......2005-10-31

The Quest of the Missing Map is a great mystery book by Carolyn Keene. This book is about a young detective named Nancy Drew and she comes upon a mystery about a hidden map. Nancy must find this map for sake of a friends family which has lost the other half of the map. Nancy must find clues to lead her to the lost map and then to the barried treasure of her friend's relatives. What I really liked about this book was how it was so suspensful and you never knew what was going to happen. What I didn't really like about this book was that when Nancy was on one of her little journeys the author would not tell everything and it could get confusing. My favorite character was definetly Nancy Drew because she is very clever and positive, and can figure out anything. There is one line in the book which really tells me that Nancy is up for anything, "Give me a broom and I'll sweep Doty into jail." This said to me that Nancy is really confident. I do have one question after reading this book, how was Spike (the bad guy) so positive that the treasure map acually led to something? This book is very suspensful. Since you never know what's going to happen next you just never want to put the book down. I really recommend this book because it is very mysterious. It is a great book to read for pleasure.

3 out of 5 stars A Fun Adventure.......2003-05-24

This review concerns the original 1942 edition and the revised 1969 edition which is an edited version of the original. Nancy becomes involved in the search for the missing half of a treasure map and investigates the mysterious happenings at a cottage on an estate just outside of River Heights. This is a pretty good book; more deserving of 3 1/2 stars. The story is intriguing and well-written. One thing that I like about this story is that there are numerous dishonest people also searching for the missing half of the map and you don't know if they are working together against Nancy or if they are working seperately. This is an enjoyable adventure and is highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A fun book to read - a review by OF.......2002-12-04

I like this book a lot. I like it because of the people in the book and because of what happens in the book. Lots of people in this book are very nice, they try to help each other as much as possible. People that I like in this book are : Nancy , Hanna Gruen , Ellen ,Mrs Chatham , Mr Smith , Mrs Smith and Ned. This book is fun.

This book is about is about a treasure. Nancy and Mr and Mrs Smith want to find a treasure. They had two maps of the treasure. One day, a man stole one of the maps at Mr and Mrs Smith's house. Nancy and Ellen were trying to stop the man and they couldn't. Nancy had the other map, and one day someone stole the other one from Nancy when she was walking.
One day, they tried to make a map with their imaginations because they had to find the treasure. It took them a little while to make a map. But they found the treasure later.

4 out of 5 stars MY review for the book.......2002-03-22

In this story, Nancy again solves a treacherous mystery. nancy becomes friends with a girl named Elle, who is trying to get a job babysitting a small 7-year old. her only problem is she is scared of the city in which Trixie, the little girl, lives in. Then Ellen tells Nancy about a map that shows treasure left by Ellen's grandfather. Her father has only half the map. His long-lost twin brother has the remaining half. Nancy is anxious to find his brother and the lost map, and find where the treasure is hidden. She finds many clues before she concludes that the second half of the map was right under her nose. While she is trying to get the two maps together, another couple is also trying to steal the maps from Nancy to get to the treasure first. Once again, the wise Nancy Drew outsmarts the thieves and gets the two half maps together. They all go together on a trip to get the treasure. Everything turns out just fine at the end, with Nancy rewarded as a hero.
I enjoyed reading this book very much. It was the third Nancy Drew book that I ever read. I like to read mystery and suspense stories where you just can't figure out who the thief would be. It is fun to read the end of mystery stories and finding out who the culprit really was. I have read "The Boxcar Children" books before and also enjoyed them because of the mystery and suspense. My least favorite part is how in real life suspects are usually smart enough to escape, but in the nancy Drew books, the thief is never smart to get away. However, nancy always completes a mystery fairly making sure the right person is punished. When I first started it, I couldn't put it down. My favorite part in this story was when Nancy and her two best friends Bess and George go to a park to have a picnic. They borrowed a small ship model from a man named Mr. Trumbull in which they believed had the second half of the map. They were being followed by the mysterious couple. When Nancy, Bess, and George got to the park, they put the ship moel in the car, and left the door unlocked on the way to the picnic. That was the couple's chance to take the ship. So they sneaked to the car and stole it. When the three friends were done, they came back to the car only to find out the ship was gone. Nancy laughed at that and said, "I took the map with me when we left the car." This was my favorite part because at first I thought, why is Nancy keeping the map in the car when she knows there are thieves after her? nancy wouldn't do anything like that. I loved this book very much and hope you will too.

Book Description

This book traces the dramatic history of the SS Republic, a paddlewheel steamship that sank in 1865 in a hurricane off the coast of Georgia with a reported $400,000 in gold and silver coins on board. Lost to history for 138 years, in 2003 the ship was located in deep water by Odyssey Marine Exploration of Tampa, Florida. The find has led to the recovery of more than 50,000 precious coins, worth an estimated $75 million to collectors today, plus thousands of fascinating artifacts reflecting the reunited nation just after the end of the Civil War. The story of the ship and its colorful past is mirrored by the story of the arduous search for the lost ship and the development of Odyssey, a shipwreck recovery company pioneering a new model for deep-sea archaeology.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lost Gold of the Republic is great reading........2007-01-03

Like it's cousin "Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea", Lost Gold of the Republic's narrative shifts between the history before the shipwreck, the action of the passengers and crew during the storm and the search for the remains of the vessel. The book is concise, well written and highly informative. While it does not go into the same amount of detail as "Ship of Gold" there is plenty of information for those wanting to learn more about this extremely interesting bit of history.

Highly Recommended!!!

5 out of 5 stars Lost Gold of the Republic is thoroughly enjoyable.......2006-12-10

Written by 30-year veteran writer and editor of National Geographic magazine Priit J. Vesilind, Lost Gold of the Republic: The Remarkable Quest for the Greatest Shipwreck Treasure of the Civil War Era is the fascinating true story of the hunt for the SS Republic, a steamship that sank in 1865 during a deadly storm, 100 miles from the coast of Georgia. In October 2003, after decades of failed deep-sea search operations, the company Odyssey Marine exploration discovered the sunken ship and "King Midas' dream": a field of gold coins strewn across the ocean floor. Since then, more than 51,000 coins and 13,000 artifacts have been recovered, at an estimated total value of over $75 million. Exploring the archaeological and historical dimensions of this great find, as well as the courage of the deep-sea ocean pioneers who uncovered a hidden piece of America's past, Lost Gold of the Republic is thoroughly enjoyable especially for armchair travelers and anyone interested in true tales of underwater salvage.

2 out of 5 stars I hate to be the lone naysayer but..........2006-04-26

This book must be compared to Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea. In fact, it's hard to avoid the comparison: two ships in deep water, expensive and litigious salvage attempts, new technologies, etc. However, Ship of Gold is a far better book, with a more compelling protagonist, and far greater technological problems to overcome. I have recommended Ship of Gold to my management team so that they can see how one individual was able to harness the brains and money of a many to accomplish his goals. While the Republic is well-written, it seems to be a puff piece by comparison, with idolizing statements about the two main characters. I cannot recommend it, at least in the company of Ship of Gold.

5 out of 5 stars Dive into history and adventure.......2005-10-06

I've had the good fortune to visit the explorers chronicled in this engaging book - Greg Stemm, John Morris and the Odyssey crew - and have held in my hands some of the artifacts they are so carefully preserving. It's like an out-of-body experience to touch objects that have spent the past 150 years on the bottom of the ocean.

We live in an era in which insurance companies shy away from risk and warning labels are on everything from toys to car visors. It's inspiring that some people still pursue ventures simply because their heart and soul push them to act. That's what this book is all about.

It's also about the tenacity to search for 11 years without success, and to keep going another year - when you succeed beyond your wildest expectations.

It's not an overstatement to say that Stemm was born to search for shipwrecks. It's in his blood. But the Odyssey crew are not typical "treasure hunters"; far from it. They are obsessed with history as they are with the financial returns of their searches. In fact, it's likely that over the coming years Odyssey will reveal more about our nautical past than any other single entity.

This book chronicles the ties that bind these modern adventurers with those hardy souls who had the courage and initiative to board the ill-fated SS Republic as it steamed towards New Orleans just after the Civil War. It's a great read.

5 out of 5 stars amazing..........2005-09-15

This book brilliantly describes the diligence and tenacity exerted by Odyssey Marine's co-founders in locating and excavating the Republic. I've always been intrigued by the concept of finding hidden treasure and artifacts, but this book describes how Odyssey deployed new methods and technology to convert this concept into a lucrative industry. Although the history underlying the Republic and the means by which it was found are interesting, the most fascinating aspect of the book is the detailed account of the struggle associated with developing and successfully implementing a blue ocean strategy in an uncharted industry.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful juxtapostion of travel and information.......2002-05-28

I highly recommend this book. Clearly, it will resonate
with anyone who has ever been to Tibet, but even more so,
with those who care about the Dharma and about the
treasures associated with it. The book is well written,
balanced -- a marvelously crafted tale of adventure and
caring.

5 out of 5 stars A DIFFERENT KIND OF RESCUE.......2002-04-21

Normally, art conservation is not high on my list of exciting subjects to read about. Pamela Logan has changed my mind. This personal and dramatic story about her commitment to the preservation of a small, remote monastery in the Tibetan region of Kham is unique. Interwoven with short paragraphs on the Buddhist interpretation of the major paintings that "protect" the temple, she tells us a story of how a small group of dedicated "experts", led by a woman who would not give up, and accompanied by an eclectic band of monks, government overseers, and trainees gave new life to the ancient murals of a monastery that were almost forgotten. Filled with the challenges of bringing technical expertise to a remote region where much needed materials are brought in on the backs of horses and supplies mysteriously disappear, the book inspires, entertains, and educates. There are very few books about the mysterious land of Kham. Logan once again takes us there and gives life to a people and a place that few of us will see, but all of us will remember. I give it five stars.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book about Eastern Tibet and its art treasures........2002-03-07

This book is about an enormous effort by someone who has devoted many years in helping Tibetans in the eastern part of Tibet called Kham. She is Pamela Logan, who could easily have enjoyed a comfortable life with her Ph.D degree in physics, but chose to spend many months per year in her cause, including disaster relief, schooling of rural children, bringing wheelchairs to remote villges, and restoration of Tibetan Art. This book is about the challenges in restoring art in a remote area where travel had to be done by horseback and supplies are very limited, not to mention the bureaucratic problems with the officials.

It's a fascinating book for anyone interested in that part of Tibet, and not just about the art, but about the daily life of Khampa Tibetans, and the land. The author also included some history of that area . There are very few books about this part of the world, which was opened up for foreigners travel only since 2000. I myself travelled there that year and the trip was an eye-opener.

The author's writing is easy to read, even when it comes to technical things about the preservation of murals. If there is anything I have to wish for better, it would probably be that some of the photos are not as clear as it can be, but that just demonstrated one of the challenges the author had to deal with. She did not even have freedom to document the restoration project. Many of her films were confiscated by the police for the silliest of reasons.

Book Description

An electrifying shout had brought them West: "There's gold in Pikes Peak country!"

"You can pick it up by the shovelful!" Such were the promises that brought a wide sweep of humanity streaming across the Western trails. But there were other motivations too escape from the past, the pull of new adventure, or even the call of God to minister. Some would yield their lives, most would reshape their vision, and a few hardy, determined ones would make their dreams come true.

Set against the rigors of life in the West, bestselling author Marian Wells begins the story of Amy Randolph, the daughter of a frontier preacher. Separated from the familiar comforts of the East and having lost her mother as a child, this sixteen-year-old is amazed, bewildered and mystified by her new surroundings. On the threshold of womanhood, she finds that life in the lonely Colorado mining town holds realities which challenge the strength of her most basic values. Or were they really hers?

3 out of 5 stars Gold, silver, music and ministry compete for souls........2005-09-15

Amy is a young girlwho is being raised by her father and aunt. They have arrived in Colorado as she is beginning to become an adult and finds her love for music and the piano drives a wedge between herself and her family who believe pianos are too worldly for a decent young girl. As seemed typical for the era, gold and silver fever flourished as did houses of ill repute. All played a very important roll in the life of young Amy. The author saved a huge surprise for the readers for which even I was not prepared. I assume this is the beginning of a series.

4 out of 5 stars Still Enjoyable Change of Scene from The Silver Highway.......2002-04-11

Although editorial reviews refer to this as the beginning of the series, and for all I know, it and its immediate sequel, _Out of the Crucible_, may have been published first, it is chronologically the second book, following _The Silver Highway_ in the Treasure Quest quartet. This book opens in the late 1850's, as Amy Randolph, her preacher father, and the aunt who has looked after them since Amy lost her mother, arrive in Colorado. Amy meets many new people in Denver: A young miner named Daniel who immediately likes her but soon disappears for a while and returns with a new career; a friendly woman whom readers will eventually recognize from the prequel, who runs a dance hall but doesn't fit the tired stereotype of the madame predatorily seeking new girls to work for her, but who instead encourages Amy to stay in the life she has been raised in; Crystal, whose unresolved story from _The Silver Highway_ is continued very marginally as foreshadowing for the next book; a girl Amy's age named Maggie, who offers Amy the gift of music, in defiance of the disapproval of instrumental music with which Amy has been raised; and Lucas Tristram, whom readers of _The Silver Highway_ will recognize as a source of trouble. Within two years of reaching Colorado, Amy goes through several life changes, both chosen and unchosen, as she seeks to understand what she truly wants most. At times I found her longing to reshape Daniel's plans a little hard to identify with, but not so much that I didn't care so much about what happened to her or her route to happiness and several important reconciliations that I devoured the book in long reading gulps. The ending was worth reading all the way to.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book.......2006-11-29

After reading one online review of this book, I felt it must be referring to a different book. This book is full of ways to connect with unicorns on a spiritual level and doesn't focus on the history at all. I found this book to be filled with wisdom and insights and helpful exercises that really work. It is also very uplifting and positive. I plan to re-read it!

3 out of 5 stars Okay book.......2003-08-12

It depends on what you want to read about. If you want to know how to meet a unicorn and have adventures with it, this book surely won't be your cup of tea. if you want to learn about the history of unicorns and their origins, buy this book. I bought this book online and I was a little dissapointed. if you want to buy this book, don't buy it online because you will be disspointed like I was.

5 out of 5 stars Treasures of the Unicorn : The Return to the Sacred Quest.......2001-06-10

Ted Andrews has taken me from thinking of unicorns as a mythical animal to a deep appreciation, respect and gratitude for them. Learning from his wise teachings allowed a depth of understanding that I never knew existed.

The author starts with a basic understanding and overview. Then leads the reader to undercover and explore the energies of the unicorn in more ways than imaginable. As with all of his writings, he uses many varied and different ways of working with these energies. Because of his vast knowledge in so many different techniques the reader can explore and find which method feels best to them, from meditating to dancing.

Learning to use these energies and techniques has helped facilitate much positive personal change in my life. It can do the same for you.

5 out of 5 stars Alicorn Lore.......2000-01-28

I must say, I was surprised when i did get this book, it contained more information than I had expecte. I have a few other of Ted Andrews book, and when i saw that he was the author of a unicorn book, I decided to go ahead and get it. I do believe it is the first of its kind I have ever seen, you dont see that many books on the magickal attributes of the unicorn that go so in depth. I appriciate this book being written, many books talk about the unicorn, but its nice to have so much in one place. This really was the book that I have wanted for a while now.
