In addition to being a testament to the undeniably beatifying properties of American excess--literary, political, chemical, you name it--Hunter Thompson is the high priest of the ad hominem attack. Anyone unlucky enough to get in the way of his satirical sledgehammer will end up with soup for brains. Still, even Thompson needs a good villain to get properly lathered up; that's why he peaked simultaneously with America's 37th president, Richard Milhous Nixon. Tricky Dick was Thompson's dark-jowled, pale-calved Muse, and with his departure Thompson seemed to lose his place a bit. Swatting flies with a baseball bat.
You need look no further for this writer's best: this collection of pieces, first published in 1979, spans all of Thompson's primo era, including short pieces and selections from longer works. The Great Shark Hunt sports a few articles filed by a pre-Gonzo Hunter S. Thompson, which show flickers of passion but no real fire; the first experiments with the author's drug-fueled brand of journalism at the Kentucky Derby; and finally the gigs that made him an American institution, in Las Vegas and on the 1972 campaign trail.
Thompson's style is so unique that a reader is tempted to think that he leapt, fully formed, into Gonzohood. However, along with the crazy, careening prose itself, one of the auxiliary pleasures of The Great Shark Hunt is the map that it gives of Thompson's ascent (or descent, if you prefer) from the workaday hyperbole of sports writing to the hell-blast vigor of his later work. The drugs are, by and large, a distraction--lifestyle points that get in the way of the genuinely perceptive journalism that Thompson created. (But they are there, always, and in quantity.) If you're looking for insight into the underbelly of America, Hunter S. Thompson is your best and only guide, and The Great Shark Hunt is an excellent place to begin the grim safari. --Michael Gerber
Book Description
Originally published in 1979, the first volume of the bestselling "Gonzo Papers" is now back in print. The Great Shark Hunt is Dr. Hunter S. Thompson's largest and, arguably, most important work, covering Nixon to napalm, Las Vegas to Watergate, Carter to cocaine. These essays offer brilliant commentary and outrageous humor, in signature Thompson style.
Ranging in date from the National Observer days to the era of Rolling Stone, The Great Shark Hunt offers myriad, highly charged entries, including the first Hunter S. Thompson piece to be dubbed "gonzo" -- "The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved," which appeared in Scanlan's Monthly in 1970. From this essay a new journalistic movement sprang which would change the shape of American letters. Thompson's razor-sharp insight and crystal clarity capture the crazy, hypocritical, degenerate, and redeeming aspects of the explosive and colorful '60s and '70s.

The Essential Hunter Thompson.......2007-01-04
Much like Sony's "The Essential" series, which collected the greatest songs from the greatest musicians of the past century, "The Great Shark Hunt" is an anthology of the greatest of the Good Doctor's work from his peak period of the 60's and 70's.
Perhaps no other American writer captured the essence of that tumultous era better than Hunter S. Thompson. He was simultaneously of his time and above his time, and invented a new kind of journalism, dubbed "Gonzo." All objectivity was thrown out the window as the author thrust himself into the action of the stories he was reporting. Whether it was dropping acid at a police convention in Las Vegas, sabotaging the presidential bid of Ed Muskie, or running for sheriff of Aspen, Thompson's antics are legendary, and "The Great Shark Hunt" is a great way to get acquainted with the man and the writing for which he is best remembered.
Hilarious and very perceptive.......2006-12-27
It is a pretty rare experience for me to find an author who can make me feel as though I actually understand the culture the author is describing. Many authors are perfectly capable of explaining a culture or a period in time, but I don't find many who do it simply by describing their experiences, but Hunter S. Thompson does so in this book.
This book covers a lot of American culture in the 20th century. Now, I am not a US citizen, nor have I read much US history, but I found Thompson's stories very perceptive and entertaining. Even his coverage of something that sounds as dull as Richard Nixon's presidential campaign and fall are just brilliant. This is one of those few books that has made me laugh out loud.
What I fundamentally love about this book is that it really makes me feel like I'm standing beside the author, in his stories as he tells them. Thompson has a wicked sense of mischief, which goes very well with his "Gonzo" style of journalism. I think that "Gonzo" journalism helps his stories become so vivid because Thompson makes sure that he is not separated from what's going on. In fact, Thompson is often central to the story and yet that doesn't result in the kind of ego-centric story telling one might expect.
If you have any interest in US culture, from 1960 onward, and a love for very perceptive, though often drug addled lunatics as protagonists, then I imagine that you will love this book.
Should be required reading for all classes of journalism.......2006-11-21
The Great Shark Hunt: Gonzo Papers vol. 1 is a hysterical and brilliant piece of his mordant wit, this great heir to Mark Twain, Ambrose Bierce and H. L. Mencken, the Great Dr. Hunter S. Thompson.
The book covers the exciting and gut laugh-filled evolution of Gonzo from about 1963 to 1976; including his infamous article from 1970 in which Gonzo arose from his open shell and, soaring aloft, emitted the primal and insane roar; The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved.
This is a very facinating era of Thompson's life and career as he slowly makes a beast of himself and his writing, probably the best social commentary since Voltaire.
Glorious Madness.......2006-10-05
This is great stuff from a fearless freak. Thompson never fails to both entertain me as a reader and educate me as a writer. He was unhinged and did not hold back. This is a great collection of dazed vignettes, crazed events, and hazed intents. The guy was out there, but it never drowned his talent. A must-read for those who want a deeper sense of the madness of our times, or who simply want a good read.
Thompson's Best. Period........2006-05-23
I've read all of Thompson's books, and nothing approaches Shark Hunt for sheer ferocity of intelligence, perception, and the gleefully lunatic Gonzo outlook. He put himself fearlessly and hilariously in the middle of his stories and thus changed both modern journalism and history itself as he rocked through some of the wildest times this country will ever see.
These are HST's finest magazine pieces from the 60s and 70s, chosen and edited by the author. His takes on Nixon and Ali and Vietnam are startlingly prescient, so dead-on in the hindsight of three decades that one begins to wonder why Thompson isn't ranked with Mailer and Capote and Vidal as one of modern America's most trenchant essayists.
He's certainly funnier than all of them put together, with a uniquely skewed stance full of outrage and insanity. Sure, F&L In Vegas gets all the attention, but that book is mainly full-on Gonzo, and, while truly classic, hardly touches this collection for depth of insight and understanding of one of
the most vital and transformative periods in American history.
The essay on Haight-Ashbury alone is worth the price of this tome; he lived there before the lunacy started and stayed through to its peak, and presents the tale as only one
who tripped through the flaked-out soul of that time could.
There are sentences in that piece that are pure poetry, some of the finest dissection the 60s ever saw...and that's just the tip of this glorious literary iceberg that melts happily from the hand into the mind.
Thompson had a style that is oft-imitated but never approached, and here we see him crafting that style as the years go by, emerging as one of the most unique essayists this country has ever produced. Indeed, I would go so far as to say that HST is the most hilariously readable of modern American non-fiction writers...and this is
his magnum opus.
If you like to laugh while you think about what really matters, this is your baby.
Not to be missed.

The Three Little Hawaiian Pigs and the Magic Shark.......2003-01-16
I liked the book because the magic shark was tricky. Also, because the Magic Shark was smart. Also, because the pigs were smart. I would recommend this book to a friend because it is funny.
The Three Little Hawaiian Pigs and the Magic Shark.......2003-01-16
What I liked about it is that it has a shark in it. Another thing I like about it is that the shark could walk on land. Well, I almost loved everything in the story! Everyone should read this book because the shark coudn't fool the pigs and at the end of the story they had a little party at the beach. This is a cool story!
The Three Little Hawaiian Pigs and the Magic Shark.......2003-01-16
I liked it when the pigs threw a party after the shark gave up. I also liked it when the shark blew down the houses because it made the shark look funny. Also, I really liked it when they rolled the shark up and tied with string. I thought everything was very good in the story.
The Three Little Hawaiian Pigs and the Magic Shark.......2003-01-16
My favorite part of the story is when the shark dies. My second favorite part is when the shark dresses up like a lei seller. I would recommend this story because it's funny and has Hawaiian words. I would give this book five stars.
The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig.......2003-01-14
I like this book because it is funny. I like this book because the whole book has animals. I like this book because they never do the same thing. I would tell a friend to read this book because it's very funny!

DO NOT READ THIS BOOK AFTER DARK!!.......2005-12-10
No offense to HARR POTTER fans, but I believe that this book beat all the Harry Potter books. I needed to find a book report book over 150 pages and I had just bought this one and I liked sharks and started to read it. Soon enough I was hooked. Yes, it's true that it doesn't really have to do anything about a shrk, but it hooks like a snap. This is my favorite book in the whole world. But I warn you, DO NOT READ THIS BOOK AFTER DARK!! It's really scary. If you have read JAWS and then seen the movie and don't like JAWS anymore, trust me you'll love this book by Peter benchly!!! A great book report book.
DO NOT READ THIS BOOK AFTER DARK!! I mean it!
Pretty lousy re-hash.......2005-07-02
First of all, the menacing creature in the book is not a white shark; it's not even close to being one. They just slapped that title on here because Benchley wrote "Jaws" and they wanted to cash in on it. Second of all, what the creature actually is is so completely ridiculous that it loses the power to frighten the reader. If you need a cheap summer thriller to burn through in a day or two, there are probably others out there that have at least a shred of credibility to make it interesting. How many more dead deer and sea lions do we have to see to build endless suspense for something silly?
A bit much for me..........2005-06-24
OK, I love Peter Benchley & have all his books. This one was a bit of a miss for me. (Spoilers ahead - Stop reading if you haven't read the book) - I just can't suspend my disbelief this far. I can believe in monsters of all sorts - especially since one only has to read the headlines to see that they are out there in all imaginable forms. However, I had some trouble thinking that a half man-half shark Nazi had survived in a box for 50 years and now was wreaking havoc. Also, the ability to go onto land was a bit fanciful. It was a well written book, and Benchley always makes us care about the characters. Its amazing how this man does it... Anyhow, this book just wasn't for me, but it does have a very very cool ending - if you can handle the pressure! (Pun intended)
I can't wait for your next one Mr. Benchley!

I think I like this more than my child does!.......2007-05-19
I absolutely love this book. It has become my favorite to read to my sea-life obsessed [...] out of the many books we have. The story is adorable, the illustrations are wonderful and overall it is definitely 5 stars in our book.
Good for calming fears.......2007-01-16
I bought this book for my 4 year old son. He used to loves sharks, but a few months ago developed a strong fear of them. For a month straight, he was afraid to go to bed because he said he got "bad nightmares" about sharks. He would toss and turn and cry out in his sleep, so I know that he wasn't just trying to stay up later. As soon as I read the description for Smiley Shark, I thought it sounded perfect.
I am happy to report that he loves the book and was willing to believe that the shark was just smiling and not scary. The illustrations are bright and cheerful; he loves the expressions on the various sea creature's faces.
Great preschool read.......2005-02-18
My preschoolers love this book. Smiley shark is a great book for learning about the ocean or talking about teeth or just having fun reading. The story line is simple. All the creatures are scared of Smiley Shark until one day he saves them from a fisherman's net and they all become his friend. the Story is wrote very nicely and the art work is wonderful. I have read this book several time to the children and they often will ask to read it again. Another great book is "Shark Trouble," About two monkeys trapped on small seperate islands with sharks swimming around the islands. All the kids love the shark books.
Sharky's book review.......2003-12-08
This is a great book for children to read or for parents to read to their children. This book installs a mentality into a childs thoughts that no matter what others think or say or do, you can alwayus be a good person and help others. It also means that what you think is a handicapp now could help you or your friends later on down the road. This is a great book for begining readers or for parents just reading to their children.
Great Book.......2003-11-28
Our 2.5 yr old son has a love/hate relationship with sharks. Loves them, but is also scared of them. I got him this book to help him overcome his fear of sharks (they always seem to be in his closet or under his bed at night - thank goodness our dog can sleep in his room & "eat" the sharks).
We've had the book less than 24 hours & we've read it to him at least 6 times already. He thought it was sad that the others would not play with him. Now he just loves sharks.
It's a very bright & colourful book that also names a few of the fish. It's great considering our son also loves watching Finding Nemo.
Book Description
"Runnin' Rebel" is Tarkanian unplugged, dishing his wildest, most ridiculous, and most hilarious recruiting stories, capers, and tales from a colorful career as college basketball's ultimate lovable rogue.
Customer Reviews:
Great Recruiting and Charm Leads to Great Coaching.......2007-03-29
Jerry Tarkanian seems to be a decent, likeable guy, evidenced by both his autobiography's narrative voice, and the "shark tales" inside. Tark is laid-back, self-deprecating, funny, and respectful in his tone and delivery, and his life's story shows he could get along with of all kinds of people, and was a valuable friend to have: everyone is a "good guy", with some rare exceptions, and Tark wanted to coach all of the kids and take all the adults out for a meal and a round of drinks.
Tark's larger than life, yet down-home, blue-collar personality developed by rising from a difficult home life (tough Armenian background, father died at 10, little money) to earn a series of coaching successes virtually right out of the gate- the guy never had a losing season at any level, and boasts an overall career record of 988-228 (.813). And coaching basketball was not originally a noble calling for Tark- it instead represented sort of a path of least resistance for an athletic guy whose grades were mediocre and who didn't want a desk job.
Coach's genius lies in recruiting, and most of the book recounts his amusing and clever escapades trying to bring talent to his schools. Tark recognized early on to utilize junior colleges to his advantage, to target niche players, and to embrace black athletes that other schools sadly (and suicidally) avoided during the 1960s. He visited kids and their families at their homes, regardless of how tough the neighborhoods were. He wasn't easily dissuaded by a kid's poor grades or legal troubles, without first assessing his character and potential. He was the consummate Las Vegas host, and had the whole city at his disposal (including, to a degree, Sinatra, who actually made a couple of recruiting visits for Tark), and could convincingly show visitors the kind of time they could expect to have by playing for UNLV. His list of contacts throughout the US was outstanding - he had high school coaches and scouts everywhere feeding him guys, and all the right jucos to park them in if they needed to cool their heels first.
Of course, Tark had his scrapes with the NCAA, and seemed unfairly targeted, particularly once recruiting rules got tougher. He was open and honest about his troubles- and his disdain for the NCAA investigators- and didn't seem to be whitewashing events. For one, he won a $2.5 million settlement against the NCAA, as retribution for their misguided hyper-vigilance of his program. And he also is forthcoming about where he technically bent the rules. He gives the impression that overstepping NCAA boundaries while recruiting (including, for instance, buying a kid a sandwich or magazine from your own pocket) is like speeding or web-surfing at work: everyone does it to at least a minor extent, and you only get caught by flagrantly abusing the system, or because someone with ulterior motives is paying too close attention to the little stuff. It seemed to be the latter for Tark, but a fighting spirit and the loyalty he inspired in those around him meant the system never had him beat.
A fan of basketball loves it!.......2007-01-06
I am a long time basketball fan, especially college BB. I remeber all the names the Tark mentions in the book and it was very enjoyable to read, I couldn't put it down. I loved the "inside" information the book gives as the average fan doesn't always know about what really goes on. I am huge Al McGuire fan so that was fun also. I would urge any basketball fan to buy this book.
Tark.......2006-08-24
Great book. I was in LV, NV during Tark's tenure at UNLV. Tark originally got crosswise with the NCAA when he criticized them in his basketball column at Long Beach State. The NCAA never let go after that. UNLV administration unfortunately bought into the argument that a school can either be academically or athletically based and never understood the vision of a powerful synergistic relationship (i.e. USC, Notre Dame, TX, etc., etc.). The administration and anti-Tark boosters basically invited the NCAA in for an audit that took years. The end result was a severely truncated basketball dynasty and a huge hit in academic and adminstrative credibilty from UNLV's President Maxson on down. UNLV has not achieved significant academic standing and and has never recovered athletically. However, Tark is $2,000,000.00 richer secondary to prevailing over the NCAA in a court of law, in addition to his 1990 NCAA basketball court championship.
Wetzel's facts not trustworthy - beware!.......2006-04-14
I have not and will not bother to read this book, as I would not trust any of the facts. As an example, Wetzel recently (Yahoo!, 4/2/06) published an article bashing the UCLA basketball program. The entire basis for this was a "quote" that Wetzel attributes to Bill Walton. Nothing could be further from thr truth!
In his article, he states the quote was written by Walton ("Those quotes come from none other than Bill Walton, maybe the greatest Bruin of them all, in his 1978 book `On the Road with the Portland Trailblazers'"). This is false. The book was written by Jack Scott. In the Author's Note, Scott wrote: "Bill never asked to read even one page of the manuscript - never mind the entire manuscript - before it went to the printer. Consequently, I am solely responsible for the book's content. You should not automatically assume that Bill agrees with all of the opinions I express throughout the book..."
There are numerous other examples. When called on his error, Wetzel indicated that HE DID NOT EVEN HAVE A COPY OF THE BOOK he quotes, so could not confirm or deny the error!! Horrifying! Despite being called out, he has never made a correction to the story nor printed any retractions.
He is an untrustworthy writer, and clearly makes up and misrepresents the facts to sell his product.
BEWARE!
I suggest you buy it and read it, for it will make you laugh..........2006-03-25
Boy, I was a huge UNLV fan while Tark was there, and I loved that team that beat Duke by 30 in the finals. Thus, I bought the book, and I enjoyed it. In virtually every chapter, there is a funny story or a simply outrageous story that I'm sure is true. Tark tells his story, and he seems to hold nothing back. Tark is truly unique.
My problem with the book is the Tark portrays himself as a "victim" of some sort of witch-hunt by the NCAA. I've no doubt that the NCAA was unfair-grossly unfair-to Tark. Yet I grow weary of self-proclaimed "victims."
Yet I suggest you buy it and read it. You'll laugh because it is funny.
And if you were a huge UNLV fan like I was, it will bring back some good memories.
Remember the incredible defense that Stacey Augmon played? If not, this book will bring back memories such as Stacey, et al.

Great adjunct to our Hawaii trip!.......2003-04-23
I bought this book to read to my 5 year old before we went on our Hawaii vacation. She loved it! We must have read it a dozen times before we left for our vacation! I am not an expert on Hawaiian culture, but the story was entertaining and it discussed many things we experienced during our trip to Hawaii, for example, volcanoes, surfing, seafood, and more. It also has a glossary of common Hawaiian words which were a lot of fun to learn. I highly recommend it for any child who is interested in learning more about different cultures or stories from other lands.
A Wonderful Tale.......2001-03-29
This is a beautifully told Hawaiian tale. Ms. Warlaw knows the culture and it shows. This award-winning, kid-friendly book has something for everyone.
Punia and the King of Sharks.......2000-05-28
I have been using this book all semester with 4-7 year-olds in creative art and drama classes. My students rated it as the book they most wanted me to bring back for an encore. It is delightful to see kids' gears turning as they comprehend each of Punia's tricks and predict the outcomes. They charged into the related class projects, and discussed the story on their own. It was a teacher's dream come true.
Book Description
Whether he's engaging in mock aerial combat or riding an Iditarod sled, Randy Wayne White is one of America's most adventurous travelers. In this collection he studies anti-terrorist driving techniques, dives for golf balls in an alligator-infested pond, hunts his fellow man with a paint gun, ice-fishes for walleye with X-ray-stunned night-crawlers, and goes pig-shooting with Dr. Pavlov. With self-effacing optimism, White captures the joys and fears of wandering the earth's surface with an eclectic cast of fellow travelers: a frog that won't jump, a group of expatriate Brits who've developed an interesting cure for road jaundice, and even a mad Australian scientist.
Though he rarely finds what he's looking forlike the legendary landlocked bull sharks of Lake Nicaraguahe develops a Zen-like passion for the means and a rare ability to revel in the rib-aching humor of each exotic trip.
In the end, White leaves the reader mesmerized by the potential of undiscovered places and the promise of endless adventure in unfamiliar territory, from Florida to Borneo and everywhere in between. A leader of the new breed of thick-skinned, high-endurance adventure travelers of the 1990s, Randy Wayne White uniquely extols the pleasures of being alone and on the move.

This is an easy read, and more something you would pick up and look at from the library for an hour rather than actually buy. Only one story is about Nicaragua (though it's a good story). The rest are about the many, many other places the author has been. Though the author seems to have had quite an interesting life off the beaten path, a lot of the stories are written with shallow prose and lack depth. Not worth buying.
A Great Writer.......2006-01-11
Some dated material does not detract from the fine writing.
Wishin' I was with him.......2002-11-22
I've read all 3 of his "Outside" compilations. They all are, in my mind, great. Reading these books allows you to get lost, while you are in your living room. I wish there were more of them. If there is wanderlust in your heart, then you should read these stories. Some are better than others, some are more interesting to me than others, but that's why they make different flavors of ice cream too.
Ramblings, with plenty of white space.......2000-07-30
A very quick read. Somewhat entertaining, but not much substance for prospective travelers to Nicarauga or elsewhere. The cover, or dust cover, of this book I bought via Amazon in May of 2000 looks nothing like the artwork on the Amazon web page I bought it from. Recommend you get this book in the library, read it and put it back on the shelf, as this is easily accomplished in a short library visit.

These are not trips for ElderHospice folks!.......2000-07-27
Randy Wayne White is an authentic character. I suspected as much from reading his fiction efforts, usually involving Doc Ford. But in this collection of essays about his travels, you can see that he does not subscribe to Travel & Leisure or Conde Nast Traveler. He picks the damndest places to go, the damndest things to do when he gets there and writes about his experiences in a completely entertaining and very informative fashion. These are not your traditional outings and Mr. White would have it no other way. Hunting crocs with some authentic, although somewhat legal poachers, chasing pigs through cathedrals, exploring the seldom traveled parts of Australia, or fishing for fresh water sharks in Nicaragua (legend has it they exist), he is seldom far from disaster and you perversely kind of wish you were there..but not totally. He shows another side of himself with the gifts he brings to share with unknown Nicaraguan youngsters. I won't spoil the fun of finding out what it is...but it shows a softer side of the author, which is as welcome as his normal personna.
Product Description
Fascinating shark facts with lessons about the impact humans have on sea life and the environment.
Book Description
Shark. The very word conjures images of primal fear. The terror of being stalked by a creature utterly insensible to reason and humanity. The nearly inconceivable horror of being eaten alive. John Long brings together a collection of true tales of shark attacks, stories that evoke terror-and celebrate the courage of rescuers and the indomitable spirit that keeps victims alive to tell the tale.
