1 out of 5 stars A Cheater's Book.......2007-01-19

I bought this book as a gift for my brother, expecting him to learn a few showy tricks to impress me with. However, he told me later that basically the whole book was about cheating. He wasn't really interested by that, and the book is still sitting on a shelf at my house. I wish I'd been better informed about what kind of tricks were in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent techniques and written very well.......2006-08-22

I am fairly new to card magic / artifice / subterfuge and this book was great. I find his way of explaining hand positions superior to that of Hugard and Braue's material. I also enjoy the way he writes far more... The introduction alone is worth the price. The techniques are great because one doesn't have to rely on diversion, most of the sleights can be pulled off with the spectator's eyes directly on the pack.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Magicians.......2005-10-28

Some book are just required. As a professional magician this book is absolutely a must have in my collection. The material is sometimes difficult to understand, but if you are truly serious about it, then you will get through it and the rewards for your performance skills are practically endless.

4 out of 5 stars Good book!!!.......2005-09-08

The book helped me in understanding the basic moves and other subtleties in card manip... Knowing the purpose of each of the moves is worth it.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent sleights, but sometimes unclear.......2007-08-22

This book is designed to teach the reader how to perform a wide variety of basic sleight-of-hand card tricks. The sleights themselves are classics; I think that knowing basic sleight of hand is fundamental for performing really impressive card magic, and this book contains all of the groundwork you will need. The book includes information on the overhand shuffle, the riffle shuffle, the glimpse, the palm, the double lift, the pass, and much more.

The explanations of the sleights are quite detailed. This allows the reader to pick up fine points and refine the techniques.

That said, I think this book has some important deficiencies. (1) Many of the moves are not illustrated at all. It's very difficult to learn some sleight of hand moves with just a verbal description. More pictures would be tremendously helpful. (2) While the book contains many great tricks, especially towards the end, it also includes a number of dull ones. I personally hate any card trick that involves spelling (i.e., you count cards out as you spell some word, and the last card counted out is the chosen one), and this book includes plenty of those. Still, if you select tricks carefully from the book, you will end up with some astonishing routines.

One warning, though: sleight-of-hand magic requires a LOT of practice. If you're interested in picking up a new magic trick in five minutes, this is not the book for you! If, however, you would like to learn really deceptive card tricks - tricks that the average spectator will really be stunned by - and you are willing to devote time to daily practice, then this book is a fine option.

5 out of 5 stars Surprised to find this got only 4.5 stars.......2007-03-30

This is a truly wonderful book. I can't think of a better one for Card magic. It explains the different sleights, and has excellent routines to use them. It does assume one has a basic understanding of Card magic, so I suppose someone starting out who has no background could find it frustrating. It's not the best book for a rank beginner, but for someone who has some knowledge of the basics, I think it's terrific.

5 out of 5 stars Old but not outdated.......2007-02-02

This is the best book to start in card magic. Small, easy to follow, full of information. After you read this book, you will be able to understand the description of most tricks to learn, and also, you will surprise yourself figuring out tricks just to look at someone performing it. If you want to be a professional magician (not my case at all) you'll have to read a lot more, but, this book will be always a good reference.

I recommend after finishing reading RRTCM, move to Expert Card Technique written by the same authors.

4 out of 5 stars Card handling is not easy...........2007-01-10

This book is great for learning different card handling and shuffling techniques, however it can be a little tuff to follow sometimes. If you dont already have a basic understanding of how to handle cards you might want to start with a video first. It's usually a bit easier to learn when you can actually see whats going on. A side from all that, this is a really good book.

5 out of 5 stars RRTCM.......2006-09-30

The book itself is excellent, though, I saw a review that was a bit mistaken. It said to get the DVD set instead... which is partially incorrect. If you're truly interested in learning and perfecting, get _both_. The DVD set corrects some of the mistakes in the book, as well as offers different, more effective methods of some of the tricks.

The book is surely one of the classics in magic, and I'll have mine until the day I die. It's _well_ worth the purchase... and you might consider getting the 5-disc DVD with it. (Not all tricks in the book are covered on the DVD).

THIS IS THE MAGIC CARD TRICK BOOK TO GET!!! I have had this book for a couple weeks now, and I LOVE the tricks! All the tricks are easy to do, you just have to follow the directions in the trick you are doing and it works out great! On the other hand, if you are looking to build up your skill with sly cuts, shuffles, ect. This is not the book for you. But, If you want to learn fun, easy, card tricks this is the book to get!!

The book is well written. Explanations are really good but, the tricks are for BEGINNER! Some of them are so evident that I wouldn't even do them in front of my 6 years old nephew. But still, you have some (maybe 2 or 3) good tricks. So for the price, it's still good if you want to get into card tricks.

Everyone who is interested in card magic, MUST get a copy of this book. This book contains AMAZING & OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD card tricks. You won't bekieve how good these tricks are until you actually read them for yourself. You will totally mystify your friends and family.

Book Description

A famous card expert demonstrates tricks that have left theater audiences amazed, and that card-playing professionals have used profitably. It is not a book for beginners. But these shifts, palms, glides, false shuffles, cuts, fans, steals and spectacular deceptions will help those with basic card expertise reach new levels of performance. Over 300 photos show Buckley’s exact hand positions during each move.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2004-03-17

Pretty good book with a variety of unique card sleights (palming, manipulating cards in the deck, etc.). These sleights are the 'real work', so it will take a little perseverance. Many of these utility sleights are ones that you ought to know if you want to be a card sleight-of-hand worker.

The instructions are generally clear, but sometimes a detail here and there gets a little confusing. There's a fair number of photos showing how to do many of the sleights.

Sometimes a sleight is a little more complicated than it needs to be. My recommendation is to follow the author's steps in slow-motion with a deck of cards in hand. After you are familiar with the overall effect, you can make adjustments based on what your comfortable with. There may also be other newer methods for learning these sleights if you want to invest in newer card sleight instruction (such as the Daryl Encyclopedia of Card Sleights videos, etc.).

Right now, I'm working on the side steal sleight. He gives a T. Nelson Downs version which has some merit, but it is much more complicated than necessary. The author's own version is a little more do-able. But even the author's method becomes a little too fidgety, so I've made minor modifications to make it work well for me. I start in slow-motion, counting through the substeps to keep pace while I do the move (1..2..3..4). Then I repeat it until I can bring it up to full speed.

If you want to learn sleights for cheap, try this book. You may have to pick and choose through the sleights, and there may be better methods to perform some of these sleights now, but it's not bad for under $10.

5 out of 5 stars Buckley was a card mommer.......2002-04-28

When I unexpectedly came across a picture of Buckley on the first page of the book, and after hearing the other reviews of how difficult and advanced the techniques in the book were, I couldn't believe my eyes. I was surprised to see the face of a handsome teenager, of which my previous impression was COMPLETELY the opposite to the one I held in my hands. And this guy was a professional card magician at the age of 18, and able to do tricks infront of hundreds of people on-stage in 1908!

I have a feeling that this guy's mystery and skill probably gained him significant success with girls his age. The mysterious effects of these difficult to execute sleights are priceless and dazzling beyond belief. If a 3 columns card trick can make girls believe in magic.. then Buckley's stuff probably knocked their socks off... literally! Believe me, this guy would be able to blow David Blaine out of the water and make him look like Bob Longe.

That being said and out of the way, the book itself is amazing. There are very clearcut photos of Buckley's hands and very impressive card tricks, or as he calls them in the fourth section, "Card Experiments". Best of all, this book isn't like most others where the authors seem to purposely be vague (S.W. Erdnase) and not give the best descriptions. Mr. Buckley gives you every detail and is your friend throughout the book, showing you exactly how everything is done without any confusion.

And there is SO much different good stuff in here, that you'll probably never need another book for advanced materials.

It is a great book and a great reference to help you on your way to card excellence and showmanship. You will not be disappointed with this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Very advanced, but as good as it gets.......2001-08-04

If you've mastered Hugard and Braue's stuff, if you can do 60 classic passes per minute, if you have all the time in the world to devote to card sleight of hand, then this is the book for you! Seriously, this is a truly excellent book. Buckley's sleights, though not for the faint of heart, are superb. (He must've been one heckuva cardician!) This is a serious, serious card magic book. But if you are serious yourself, you'll get it. Of course, you'll overlook the antiquated prose and Buckley's tremendous ego throughout. (When you read this material you'll forgive Buckley's self-congratulatory tone.) This is a splendid work for those who want to be the best...

5 out of 5 stars You better know what you're getting into.......2000-10-16

I've yet to see a bad review for this book, and there's a reason. This book is terrific. There is however one issue to be addressed. This book is hard!!! Definitely not for beginners, it has some of what I believe are the greatest but hardest card manipulations out there. I definitely recommend it however to the serious card magic enthusiast. There are enough valuable ideas in here to last you a lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars Not For Begginers.......2000-05-25

This book by Arthur Buckley is amazing.

It has loads of fantastic card sleights, whilst they do need a lot of practice it is worthwhile, as once you have them in your fingers they will never be forgotten.

All of these slieghts are extremely useful. The book is divided into different sections of tricks.

There are tricks for close up and for stage although some may need some imagination to update them, also there is a special section on crooked gambling.

All in all a good book with lots of photographs of Buckleys hands, he was a great card worker.

Buy it if you already know all the basics of card magic well.

4 out of 5 stars Good Learners Book.......2007-05-03

Ordered this book as a gift for my husband. He's new to card tricks. While he didn't find the entire book useful, he did find a lot of interesting/entertaining tricks to work on.

Overall 4 stars because it helped him learn some new tricks but didn't keep him occupied for more than 2 weeks :).

5 out of 5 stars A great book for ideas.......2007-03-30

Some people cook by recipe, others "by ear," so to speak. I do magic by ear. That is, I look for ideas, and then usually tweak things to fit what I think makes sense.

This is a tremendous book for ideas! Lots and lots and lots of them.

So for a "give me an idea I can run with" person, I think this book is just great. For someone looking more for a step-by-step recipe, this probably isn't the book for you.

3 out of 5 stars Good start.......2007-02-19

The title of the book gives a good idea of what is in store. Primarily an information source of magic card tricks.

Light on useable information so far as performing is concerned, yet good for the historian.

Then again, most magicians are weak performers and strong on history, so this book will be a treat.

3 out of 5 stars Very Complete Book of Card Tricks.......2004-11-15

This book is great in its completeness and organization. It walks you through most of the card tricks. This book is not geared toward beginners or younger audiences. If you are a visual learner this book is not for you. There are very few pictures and diagrams so you will have to use your imagination at times to visualize what the trick is supposed to look like based on the descriptions.

4 out of 5 stars Card Tricks book is a great reference.......2004-01-22

The cardtricks book is well written and PACKED with card tricks - more than you could deal with in a lifetime. Hugard has written many books on the subject and you can't go wrong. Another online resource I found and loved is http://www.ellusionist.com - amazing site with card trick movies and a bunch of cool stuff.

Book Description

Street Magic is a great how-to magic book that teaches the real secrets of close-up, under-your-nose, in-your-face magic as seen on TV. Magic is one of the longest surviving forms of entertainment and is as popular today as ever, having undergone a huge renaissance recently. This book contains the very best tricks and illusions as popularized by today's greatest magicians. It is an accessible book, free of buzzwords and fully photo-illustrated, featuring tricks using everyday objects, designed for those who want the lowdown as quickly and easily as possible, but without skimping on all-important detail. The chapters and tricks are arranged so that the reader can comfortably progress from one to the other in skill and performance level.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent magic book .......2007-08-22

This is easily one of the better books for beginners. Quite a few pictures and clear instructions make this a real winner. The author does a superb job of explaining how to present each illusion which in reality is far more important than the mechanics behind the trick. This is a nice change from many of the other magic books targeted at the novice. By the way, the tricks cover a wide range (e.g. cards, coins, mentalism) and are all of high quality.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, great tricks, easy instructions.......2007-06-26

This book not only contains great tricks but it also explains them in a way easily followed, with detailed color photographs and understandable text. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to classic tricks.......2005-10-04

I predict that this book will become a classic for both beginning and intermediate magicians. Very little of the material is new and it won't make you the next David Blaine, but it does provide excellent handlings of classic tricks which require little or no set-up. The explanations and photos are clear and helpful.

5 out of 5 stars awesome tricks with ordinary cards.......2007-09-13

this book along with fulves first one are staples in my magic. The tricks will leave your audience amazed especially because you can use a borrowed ordinary deck of cards. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves magic.

4 out of 5 stars Excelent choice.......2005-12-23

I actually prefer this book to the first one. If you have any doubt about the effects in this book just learn the very first trick. I've used it for years and it just knocks people off their feet. Now, I do a lot of sleight of hand magic but a trick doesn't have to be difficult to be good. It's the crowd response that counts.

Like most of these Dover magic books, there are some real stinkers in there. But if you pick and choose you can find some real gems.

This is an excelent book for a young magician just starting out. It's a good choice overall.

All of Karl Fulves books are good for beginning magicians. When you read the effects they seem very simplistic, but with good presentations everything is very usable material. As a professional magician I am often asked where to start learning effects and this would be a good place.

5 out of 5 stars Another great book!.......2002-04-07

This is another really fine book of material for the average magician. Much is from 'Pallbeares Review', a magazine published by the author, and now considered one of the best sources for excellent material.
Many of the effects in this book are mathematical, and will fool most people, including magicians. The nice part is that you don't have to understand the mathematics, or why it works, to be able to do it. All that is required is attention to detail and good audience management. For that reason, the magician-to-be should be at least 12 years old, although some of the tricks could be done by someone who is younger.

1 out of 5 stars Never get Self Working books.......2001-06-24

I have wasted hours and hours reading these selfworking books and have learned ONE trick which is foolproof and i like greatly. All the other tricks are so easy to figure out or mathematical which is not very impressive. It is in these type books that mathematical tricks that have ruined card magic are learned. I used to think card magic ... until finally I saw some good card tricks. All the goodcard tricks i have ever seen require sleights, such as the glide, double lift, false shuffles, or else need gimmmicks that can be examined like the short card and stripper deck. These self working books have tricks without sleights or gimichs. Good card tricks don't work if there isn't sleights or examinable genius gimmicks. So don't waste your money on these over priced books

4 out of 5 stars Great tricks for those willing to practice.......2003-01-10

This book is a wonderful resource for those wanting to improve their sleight of hand, and contains over 165 card tricks and stunts. While the book starts with the basics, understand that the basics can be very challenging to master! Many of the tricks will require serious practice to make them polished enough to perform. The text of this book can be somewhat dense, and require a few readings to get the gist of what is being said. And while there are some difficult tricks to perform, there are a number of things the absolute beginner can pick up rather quickly.

4 out of 5 stars A great book, unfortunately quite dated........2001-09-13

This is a great book. A lot of the things in this book have inspired a lot of ideas and variations. However, this book suffers from a major flaw: many of the techniques in this book are out of date, and many of the tricks would not be as powerful for today's audiences.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best book of the century!!!!?????.......1999-06-15

This is an excellent book, which I waited for for two and a half weeks, it came to me and I was excited, it turned out to be quite a wonderful suprise. The appearing card trick is quite suprising, but difficult to comprehend what he is getting at. no dissapearing card tricks either, other than that, he has some excellent one handed shuffles and other great tricks. thank you

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book! Might consider a revision..........1998-12-23

This is an excellent collection of card sleights and a few tricks. My only complaint is that some of its methods require every ounce of your attention to comprehend them. Not real clear in some areas but other than that it is excellent!

5 out of 5 stars Nobody will play cards with you again after this!.......1997-08-28

This book remains a classic for obvious reason. In it, you learn how to make cards appear and disappear from your empty hand, how to make some of the most beautiful card fans ever conceived, and how to manipulate cards in ways most folks would never imagine. There are also several tricks in this book that use the manipulation principles involved. This book is for die-hard cardicians, but those interested in fooling their friends may find something here also

5 out of 5 stars One of the most fantastic books on close-up magic........1998-03-15

This book is very nice. It teaches you how to do magic with any houshold items. There are 2 chapters with cards too. NONE of the tricks described here use any sort of slight of hand. It is 100% mathematical tricks than ANYONE can do. And they are all nice cloe-up tricks which are the type of tricks which are most baffling. Martin Garder, the author of this book is a very talented writer. He wrote many books on mathematics and science. This is a great book and I recomend EVERYONE should get it even if they are not into magic that much.

Book Description

Chip tricks, such as the well-known chip shuffle, have been around for almost as long as chip games. However, over the past couple of years, a new level of interest in chip tricks has arisen because of the popularity of poker and because viewers see poker pros doing these tricks at poker events on television. Part of this interest comes from the focus on players' hands during these televised poker games. Part of it is because the players look so cool performing these tricks. The result is the emergence of chip trick superstars like Dutch Boyd and segments dedicated exclusively to chip tricks on ESPN during the World Series of Poker.

Some of the well-known players make chip tricks look so easy! At the 2004 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Tournament of Champions, viewers saw Annie Duke effortlessly and endlessly shuffling her chips on the way to the title. And, during the 2003 WSOP, Antonio Esfandiari and Evelyn Ng made jaws drop with their finger feats. Watching these players is what inspired Jen Teti and Ross Watson to learn chip tricks.

Unfortunately, it wasn't that easy: there were very few places to turn to for good, complete information on how to perform chip tricks and absolutely no books that covered this material. That's why, after the authors mastered the tricks, they decided to write a book with detailed instructions and step-by-step pictures. This is that book.

CHIP TRICKS: Look Like a Poker Pro provides readers with detailed instructions and photographs illustrating each and every step for approximately 31 chip tricks. The book is written in a witty, easy-to-read style and is jam-packed with over 200 photographs (see samples below). The book also covers related topics, such as where to practice the trick and how to ensure that one's newly-learned chip tricks don't become "tells" at the poker table.

CHIP TRICKS breaks down all the top tricks, from basics like the front to back, switches and chip snaps, to more advanced tricks like the back spin, salt shaker and the pull under, from "magic" tricks like the twirl, the knuckle roll and the butterfly, to killer combinations. And, the most amazing thing is that after practicing for a while (it's really quite addictive), readers will realize that most of the tricks aren't even that complicated. By following this book's clearly written instructions and step-by-step photos, readers will never wonder where their fingers need to go. It's really that simple.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice For an Introduction.......2007-05-12

This book is great. I couldn't do any of the tricks described before i got this book in my mail (except the "chatter stack" lol). Now, I'm a thumb flippin fool! Also, i almost have the butterfly down packed. Now it's time to start using the other hand. That's where the REAL challenge begins. The pictures are easy enough to follow and has great instructions. Overall, an excellent book for the beginners, not so much for those who already know most of the basics.

5 out of 5 stars All in.......2006-09-15

I was shocked to see Aiken only give this book a 4 star review. Anyone who has tried to study up on chip tricks knows that this is the only one out there worth reading. Watson and Teti's instructions are genius. Their step by step instruction, coupled with the precise photography will have you doing the Butterfly in no time- regardless of your finger flexibility.

4 out of 5 stars Shuffle up!.......2006-08-08

I bought this book for one reason--to learn how to shuffle chips and, I'm happy to report, I actually know how to do it now. Not perfectly, not every time (not yet at least), but I'm very happy with my progress. Now I'm trying to decide what other tricks to learn. There are so many. And, for a "how to" book, it's not a bad read either. Kind of funny.
