Customer Reviews:
The Original Shrek.......2007-06-27
As always, William Steig is a master. This precursor to the Shrek movies does not disappoint. It's short, funny and extremely well done. All ages can enjoy Steig's humor. We love it.
Will the real Shrek step forward?.......2007-06-21
I purchased this book to read to my two grandchildren ages 3 and 5 because of their enjoyment of the Shrek movies. They had seen all of the movies and parents, including myself had adorned them with many of the commerical items, dolls, DVDs, pillows, cups, etc.
My mistake was in not pre-reading the book thinking it would be oretty straight forward and relate much to the series of movies plot and background. Well, I was completely wrong and found myself trying to skip sections, interject different dialog, and basically explaining why Shrek did not look, act or behave as he had in the previous two movies. My 3 year old was affected by his "scary-ugly" face and my 5 year old argued it wasn't him at all and I had gotten the wrong book.
It was very difficult to explain that for some reason the industry decided to 'beautify' Shrek's image and characteristics in order to make him more acceptable to the public. I can maybe understand why Shrek's facial markings changed from the books portrayal but the book, beginning, middle, and ending, bore little to no resemblance to the screen Shrek at all. Why even claim it as an adaption when it only used the name of the character and that he was ugly? The book Shrek was sad, rejected by everyone, even his parents...more like the character in Humpback of Notre Dame. This book is most unaccpetable to be read to young children who do not understand capitalism and how making a buck meanig forsaking reality.
Will the Real Shrek Please Stand Up.......2007-04-23
Since reading Amos and Boris and other William Steig stories I became a big fan of his. When I was still working (I am retired) as an elementary school librarian I read this book to many of my classes. Those who had seen the first Shrek movie said this isn't the story of Shrek! I tried to explain to those children that movies often don't portray the storybook in it's original form. But as another reviewer stated it's worth the purchase! I have since seen all of the Shrek movies and I am looking forward to the next one to be released in May, 2007.
If you haven't read the other magical stories by William Steig read them now! Many of them have magical moments, great vocabulary, and other facets you don't want to miss. If you're looking for a strong female character read: BRAVE IRENE. If your looking for a friendship book with loving characters read: AMOS AND BORIS. If your looking for an inventive, clever character ( and a book to give to your dentist) read: DR. DESOTO. If you want a book that has "magic" read: THE AMAZING BONE. Of course, William Steig had a Caldicott Winner with (read:) SYLVESTOR AND THE MAGIC PEBBLE. I have all of his books and he has one junvenile novella read: THE REAL THEIF. Two junvenile fiction novels, read: ABEL'S ISLAND and DOMINIC.
Charming, funny, a little bit "witchy.".......2006-06-26
I like that Shrek likes himself for who he is. I like the theme, that there's someone for everybody. I don't especially care for the "evil magic" in it, but it is a very small part of the story.
Shrek, the ugliest guy around.......2005-08-12
When they came along, the moviemakers took a great deal of artistic license. Little of the book remains intact in the movie. The book starts with Shrek's parents hissing things over, and they decide to send Shrek "out in the world [to do] his share of damage". Shortly after he leaves home, Shrek meets with a witch who tells him his fortune in exchange for a few of Shrek's lice. Shrek is told that he will wed a princess who is even uglier than he, and is overjoyed at the news. On his way to the princess, Shrek meets a peasant, confronts thunder and lightning, defeats a dragon, has a nightmare of being loved by children, and meets a donkey who takes him to the castle. After defeating a knight he goes and meets his princess. The two get married and live horribly ever after.
The story is well told, and I love how Shrek breaks out in rhyme at the sight of his princess. The words flow well, and the book is fun to read out loud.
The illustrations of Shrek are, by necessity, ugly. Even more so than the movie. That said, they are also cute, though not in the huggable/loveable sense. The illustrations are colorful, fun, and expressive. A great book, even if (or especially since?) it isn't the movie.

60 self-adhesive stickers.......2004-08-01
The DK Sticker books are filled with reusable stickers. The eight-page booklet is filled with green images and captions. Children can choose the stickers that fit in the spaces available. These stickers could also be used for art projects or you could make your own wrapping paper for a Shrek fan. Some of the best stickers include the castle, donkey and dragon, Fiona dreaming, the donkey grinning and the Fairy Godmother.
Sample Captions:
Dragon: Finally a fierce dragon is all that stands in the way of rescuing Princess Fiona-no problem at all if you're a smooth-talking donkey.
The Three Bears: Since leaving their cozy home, the Three Bears are constantly wondering who's sitting in their chairs, sleeping in their beds and eating their porridge!
Overall, a humorous collection of stickers and captions. All the stickers are full-color images of scenes from Shrek and Shrek 2.

Book Description
Shrek (2001), an offbeat adventure featuring a big green ogre, his chatty sidekick Donkey, and the feisty Princess Fiona, turned the traditional fairy tale on its ear and helped to usher in a new era in computer animation, garnering the first Academy Award(r) for Best Animated Feature. Shrek 2, opening in May 2004, joins the inseparable trio on new comic adventures, advancing once again the art of 3-D computer animation.
This lighthearted book chronicles the equally dramatic (and occasionally comic) story behind the making of the two movies. It features a trove of behind-the-scenes information and is jam-packed with illustrations-concept art, storyboards, character models, set designs, and stills. Author John Hopkins joins the filmmakers (directors, producers, animators, writers, production designers) as they describe the painstaking process of inventing and animating an imaginary world, and eavesdrops on the movies' main characters as they recount the trials and tribulations of a major production, the clash of egos, and the scenes that didn't work.
With enough Shrek lore to satisfy the die-hard fan and the same off-kilter humor as the films themselves, this book is sure to have enormous appeal.
Customer Reviews:
Lovely!.......2007-01-03
Me encantó! Ideal para los fanáticos de las dos películas!
Hermosas ilustraciones a todo color y muy buena información técnica y no tanto sobre cómo se hicieron las dos películas.
Sensational!.......2005-01-09
This is a sensational book which covers the idea of Shrek, both movies Shrek 1 & 2 as well as behind the scenes stuff such as animation techniques and so forth. You will learn all sorts of interesting trivia such as the sequel was originally going to be an election for the throne with candidates such as Pinocchio's policies being about honesty. This is a very high quality book with nice paper making up the 173 pages, the makers haven't skimped on the quality at all, with heaps of illustrations and actual still frames from the movies it would make a sensational gift for any Shrek fan. You do want to make sure you have seen both movies first because the book does go extremely detailed into the plots of both, it is an excellent book, there's not really anything negative that could be said about it. It is a great book which will provide hours of enjoyment.
Worth the money, but a boring novel........2004-08-15
I recieved this book as a birthday present. It's not a gift I regret recieving or reading, but I wouldn't spend that much money to buy it.
PROS:
-The pictures are gorgeous, all of my favorite moments are included
-The sidebar conversations with characters are pretty funny
-Easy navigation, side articles on interesting aspects of production
CONS:
-If this book had none of the above, it would be a really boring novel
-Very few comments about anything beyond the first visualization and storyboard sessions.
-Very few side stories, or funny anecdotes after the third chapter
If you want to read a good movie book, read Lord of the Rings: Making of a Movie Trilogy... They have great stories from the directors, designers, and even lawyers. Very entertaining, well worth the time.
Very Well Done.......2004-06-15
This is a great book all about the rude humor filled animated movies from Dreamworks. It is necessary for any die-hard Shrek fan. This tells the story of how the movie got done, with little facts and full color photos from the movies. Although I'm not the biggest fan of the Shrek movies, this book is a great experience.
