My Review for Bionicle; Mask of Light.......2004-08-13
Hi. My name is Nicholas (I feel I should express my first name)and I purchased this book. This is a nice book, good, and all, but, if you've seen the movie, the book is a little boring. But, probably wouldn't be the same if you got the book first. Anyhow, I rate it 3 stars because, well, the above reason. Still, I would get this book anyway, but, it would be better to get the book before the movie. Special thanks to Cathy Hapka (writer) for creating a book based on the awesome movie!
From a true Bionicle fan, Nicholas

Book Description
Bigtime, New York, is not big enough for both Carmen Cole and the superheroes and ubervillains who stalk its streets. Exposing the true identities of the nation's caped crusaders and their archenemies has catapulted Carmen from her sleepy southern hometown to the front pages of the country's biggest newspaper, The Expos. Hobnobbing with millionaires and famished fashionistas is all in a day's work for a woman on the trail of the Fearless Five and Terrible Triad. But when Carmen gets the scoop of her career, her life comes crashing down around her. And even Bigtime's sexiest superhero, Striker, may not be able to save her.

Fun, fast read.......2007-09-24
Have you ever wondered what would happen if there were *really* superheroes? Karma Girl describes a world just like ours - except every town has its own superhero and ubervillain. It's just a fact of life.
This author has obviously read her share of comic books, but didn't take them *too* seriously, as so many comic book fans do. In Karma Girl, she has taken a lighthearted poke at the comic book genre and incorporated the fun, funny parts of a comic book world into a fully realized romance story.
Carmen Cole, having been betrayed in the past by her fiance, who turned out to be a superhero (all unbeknownst to her), is on a mission to unmask them all. Why should they get to hide behind their secret identities? She builds a career around her ability to dig into the lives of the superheroes and ubervillains and expose them for who they really are.
Until tragedy strikes, all because she's done her job too well. Her career takes a dive, as well as her reputation, and she's keeping her head down as she tries to figure out what to do with her life.
Just about then, the Terrible Triad of ubervillains captures her and, with dire threats of horrible consequences, forces her to resume her crusade. Expose the secret identity of Striker, the foremost superhero of Bigtime or die a horrible death - or worse!
What's a girl to do? Well, I won't tell you. You have to read it to find out. Suffice it to say that this is a very entertaining read, filled with all the excitement and bizarre twists and turns of a good comic book, and the warmth of a building romance.
Will Carmen be turned into Yeti Girl by the Terrible Triad? Will Striker save her? Will she ever be able to find the zipper in Striker's leather suit?
Tune into Karma Girl and find out!
First book I've ever bought because of a bookmark, and I'm glad I did.......2007-08-18
For the first time in my life, I bought a book because of a bookmark I received at a conference last May--and I'm glad I did. This was a super book with an amazing voice and a story world that existed beyond the pages. The author's detail to the setting was not overpowering but very vivid.
The story was great. How Carmen re-aligns her karma and how she and Striker fall for each other kept me glued to the pages. I so totally fell for Striker (and not just because it's a soccer playing position and I'm a soccer fanatic.) I've read this book three times and loaned it out to three different readers--with the demand that they read it quickly so it's not long from my hands.
My only regret is that I bought the book at the beginning of June and have to wait until November for the next one. If I'd waited, maybe there would be more books to luxuriate in.
Jennifer Estep, please write faster!
Loved it!.......2007-06-27
Karma Girl is filled with suspense, action, mystery and romance. I enjoyed reading this book so much and I just didn't want to put it down. Carmen plus all the Fearless Five make for great entertainment and a great story.
I can't wait for the next book in the series titled Hot Mama, a story about one of the Fearless Five, Fiona Fine.
More like 4 1/2 stars..........2007-06-21
Imagine a world in which a superhero protects every town while ubervillians attempt to complete their nefarious deeds....
Reporter Carmen Cole lives in such a world and it makes her sick! Ever since she accidentally uncovered the secret identities of her ex-fiancé and ex-best friend, Carmen has been the bane of superheroes and ubervillians everywhere. That is, until a miscalculation leaves Carmen as the pariah of the journalism world. Her past comes crashing back to haunt her when she finds herself locked in a battle between the Fearless Five and the Terrible Triad with both her life and her heart on the line.
If you are looking for a serious read, then KARMA GIRL is not the book for you. KARMA GIRL is pure entertainment. Jennifer Estep has perfectly captured the campiness and humor that made so many of us love the superheroes of our youth. There are no real secrets here as the so-called secret identities of the Fearless Five and the Terrible Triad are fairly obvious, but that is part of the fun. After all, everyone should have been able to see that Clark Kent and Superman were one and the same and yet no one could figure that out. KARMA GIRL uses those same basic principles to great effect.
Carmen Cole's tale of woe is pretty funny as even she can see how revenge really isn't the best choice. Carmen's actions repeatedly come back full circle and hence the very appropriate title to this charming story. Jennifer Estep does a great job at making Carmen likeable despite some of her actions, perhaps because Carmen herself expresses such deep regret for the mistakes she has made. And I love how all of the characters are named, as the alliteration really helps promote the comic book atmosphere!
After finishing reading KARMA GIRL, my first thought was that this just had to be a series. There are simply too many possibilities out there for more stories involving the other superheroes. Thankfully, Jennifer Estep is already working on future books as I can certainly envision other adventures for the fictional town of Bigtime! KARMA GIRL is pure fun as Jennifer Estep shows a real flair for crafting a tale that is both amusing and engaging.

Newcomer Jennifer Estep blends the over-the-top, cartoonish world of comic book heroes with the everyday life of a woman scorned in Karma Girl. Believe it or not, it works.
Carmen Cole is a reporter who trusts her instinct and discovers, on her wedding day, that her fiance is sleeping with her best friend and maid of honor. Definitely a clichéd premise, but Estep uses it as a stepping stone to introduce the superhero-ubervillain concept that defines her fictional world.
Jolted out of her expected life in the town of Beginnings, Carmen climbs the journalistic ladder, intent on unmasking the superheroes and ubervillains that populate every city and town. When Carmen finally lands in Bigtown, she finds trouble that is bigger than the town she moved to. On many different levels.
First is the problem she created when she unmasked Tornado, one of Bigtown's Fearless Five superheroes. Much to the world's shock, Tornado committed suicide after his true identity was revealed to the world. Carmen promptly finds herself on the superhero blacklist -- and a target for ubervillain Malefica, member of the Terrible Triad. Worst of all, her karma's black. She drove a man to suicide.
Can Carmen find a way out of this? Can she turn around the ugly karma she began creating on her wedding day, when she discovered her fiance, her best friend, and some harsh truths that sent her reeling?
Of course she can; Carmen is a hero's heroine, resisting her new roles in life as she resists the handsome and horny-for-her Striker. While she'd like to be a shrinking violet, she relies on her intuition to tell her when to step it up and when to back out. And so, Carmen saves the day, in many different ways. Yet she is the least cartoonish of the characters. In Carmen Cole, Estep has created a woman similar to so many of us -- brave in the face of our insecurities.
Making Bigtown come to life displays a depth of knowledge of the often imitated superhero canon. The main department store, where everyone shops, is named Oodles o' Stuff. Good Intentions Lane is fraught with danger. The Fearless Five's compound is named Sublime. And so it goes, more along the DC Comics model rather than the Marvel Comics model, where the heroes are complex, brooding, and full of angst. This is an easy, breezy world that's a pleasure to dwell in even while the reader squirms at the thought of vats of radioactive goo.
To balance out the cartoonish aspects, the characterization is the other strong point of Karma Girl. Maybe Carmen talks about karma a bit more than she ought to, but it's an integral part of the storyline. Striker's character has room for development, but right now, that's part of what makes him the ultimate hero. He makes mistakes, he is elusive, and most of all, he's hotter than his flame-wielding partner, Fiera. It'll fun to watch the Carmen-Striker relationship develop during the sequel, due out in November 2007.
Speaking of a sequel, Karma Girl is a book that deserves one, leaving as many brand-new loose ends as the book ties up. I hope we see more of Lulu and the other members of the Fearless Five, and indeed, many, many more adventures set in Bigtown.

As good as the cover.......2006-06-12
One of the things I love about anthologies is the opportunity to discover wonderful new authors. I bought this book because I am a fan of Teresa Bodwell's "Loving Mercy" and "Loving Miranda" books.
Bodwell has a compelling writing style and it comes through again in this anthology. The characterization is wonderful and the story drew me in. I love the details she uses.
"Moonlight Whispers" is the story of Isabelle and Luke. She's proper, but spunky. He's none too wise in the ways of love, but ultimately learns. I like that Isabelle is steady and strong and she doesn't give in to Luke, who can be a handfull. Lots of sexual tension and a great ending. A perfect read.
I think I'd read one Georgina Gentry book before this and I enjoyed it more than I did this particular short story. Still, it's a good story, with a fast pace and interesting characters.
I'd never read Lorraine Heath before, but will now seek out her other books. "The Reluctant Hero" made me smile. It's the story of Andrea and Matthew, who are at odds from the start. A sweet story that made me want to read it twice.
This is one of my favorite anthologies.
Gentry-Weakest Link, Bodwell-Grand Surprise, Heath-Normal Brilliance........2006-03-06
Opinions make the world go round and sharing thoughts and opinions with fellow book lovers and readers is always great fun. Giving an overall rating to an anthology is always VERY difficult. Some stories hit and some miss. Not all the stories are to one's liking; yet, I always enjoy reading an anthology, because FREQUENTLY I come across an unfamiliar author . . . one who is satisfyingly new. Lorraine Heath is the reason I rushed to buy MY HEROES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN COWBOYS. Lorraine Heath has been a favorite author since I first read "TEXAS DESTINY." This author seldom misses.
Knowing this, the Publishing House of Kensington unleashes a grand marketing ploy . . .
1). Georgina Gentry: "THE GREAT COWBOY RACE." - Rating: 2 (1 Star).
Good grief! In "The Great Cowboy Race" Ms. Gentry misses the mark. The entire affair reeks contemporary and the story itself is nonsensical . . . farce or not . . . this is just plain goofy!
Comanche Jones was a penniless cowboy - a big, rough Texan. Henrietta Jennings was a penniless Boston debutante - a back East city gal. Comanche and Henrietta both wanted fast cash. He needed cash to buy a small ranch, she needed cash to impress her estranged rancher father and the competitive horse race from Omaha to Chicago was just too tempting to pass up! The key word: Competitive!
And so . . . the story and the buffoonery begins and moves from belching contests, to "big sausages," from innocent blue eyes, to big Daddy and his "hang-`um high" lynch mob. To sum up in two words: Gallop Around.
2). Teresa Bodwell: "MOONLIGHT WHISPERS." - Rating: 10 (5 Big Stars).
Remarkably, Teresa Bodwell controls this raw, poignant story. Her characters are natural, her historical setting is first-rate, and her reader is the ultimate winner. "Moonlight Whispers" is an excellent short story.
Everyone . . . everyone liked the idea of Isabelle Millston staying at Luke's ranch . . . everyone . . . right down to the shaggy ranch dog. Lucas Warring promised Isabelle she could remain on the ranch until her father came and Lucas would keep his end of the bargain come hell or high water! Although, Isabelle knew she deserved the disdain radiating from Luke, she had no other way to repay his kindness. Besides, when the time came and she left the ranch, how else would she make a living? Engaging in the oldest profession in the world was her only choice.
Teresa Bodwell delivers a winner with "Moonlight Whispers." Isabelle Millston is a heroine the reader can root for; she flows from the pages as spunky and soft. She is someone who deserves happiness. Luke Warring is a hero who drifts through the story with steadfast ease. Although, he radiates incompetence whenever he is involved in the man-woman relationship, he is someone who deserves a happy ending. And happily, "Moonlight Whispers" delivers.
3). Lorraine Heath: "THE RELUCTANT HERO." - Rating: 10 (5 Stars).
Lorraine Heath is one author who can take an average provision and create a reading appetite. Simply put: when Lorraine Heath is in her element - westerns, Texas, hunky heroes - there is no finer author. "The Reluctant Hero" is a funny, touching tale held together by Heath's artistic skills.
Andrea Jackson had a very heavy financial burden to unload, but she would definitely pay back the money! As writing was her only means of support, Andrea would need to write a whole bunch of dime novels. Now, if only he would cooperate? He is the honorable Matthew Knight - the "all-time" perfect dime novel hero! Sheriff Matt Knight longed for loyalty and love, but he wasn't ready to be anyone's hero. He had too many faults and she was not the kind of a woman he deserved, but she was definitely the kind of a woman he wanted!
USUALLY a short story leaves a reader feeling rushed and unsatisfied, but in "The Reluctant Hero" Lorraine Heath successfully brings her story home. To what degree? I just pre-ordered Lorraine Heath's next book!
****** So did Kensington get the grand marketing scheme through? Well, Teresa Bodwell and Lorraine Heath produce BIG TIME. However, I think the idea behind this anthology was to launch Georgina Gentry's newest book, TO TEASE A TEXAN. Here Kensington struck out! They also struck out with the large size book idea, the poor quality of printing paper idea, and the extraordinary price idea - $17.95 Canadian. What gives Kensington? I hope this is not the wave of the future!

three great western romances .......2006-03-04
"The Great Cowboy Race" by Georgina Gentry. In 1893 desperate Bostonian Henrietta Jennings travels to Chadron, Nebraska to obtain the help of a father she never met; however, she learns that tough old Henry is not at his ranch, but instead in Omaha. In dire straits hiding from her mother who demands she marry a prominent Brahmin, she darns the disguise of a boy and enters a horse race to Chicago thinking that Pinkerton would seek a female easterner. Though the trail proves dangerous she adapts except for her desire for her toughest opponent, Comanche Jones.
"Whispering by Moonlight" by Teresa Bodwell. In 1862 Isabelle Milton finds herself broke working part-time in a saloon that does not need her help in Hell Gate, Washington Territory. Lucas Warring enters the saloon looking for his wastrel brother Matt, but learns his sibling has run off with miners. The saloonkeeper and his wife, the Havermans, persuade Lucas to take Isabelle to his ranch as a cook. As the northwest suffers from a frozen winter, they fall in love while learning how to stay warm.
"The Reluctant Hero" by Lorraine Heath. In 1884 Gallant, Texas, dime novelist Andrea Jackson chooses Sheriff Matthew Knight as her next hero. However, he refuses to talk about his escapades to The Lone Star Lily author. Desperate, Andrea decides to seduce the scowl off his face, and the words from his brain, but he persists in saying he is no hero as he has a debt to pay off.
These are three great western romances starring brave somewhat desperate females and strong men who melt when their ladies turn up the heat.

The Sinner
Kathleen O'Brien
Harlequin SuperRomance, Jan 2005, $5.50, 294 pp.
ISBN: 0373712499
Rising Hollywood star Lara Lynmore gives a presentation at the Breast Cancer Awareness luncheon when her stalker stuntman Kenny Boggs makes his move. Her bodyguard, former FBI Agent Bryce McClintock intercedes. The deranged Kenny uses a knife to stab Bryce in his upper arm to the bone; Bryce shoots and kills the dangerous intruder.
Bryce returns home to Heyday where he surprisingly inherited the home of his estranged father. His plan is to recuperate enough to play blackjack in the Bahamas. Lara follows Bryce not because she hero worships him, but because she has loved her bodyguard from almost the first moment her lawyer, his friend, introduced them. Now she must persuade him that he comes first not fame.
The latest "Heroes of Heyday" (see THE SAINT) is a fine contemporary romance starring two likable lead protagonists though the hero is in denial perhaps a bit too long as he insists he is not the marrying kind and that she is. Lara is a terrific individual who struggles to not let fame overwhelm her as much as she toils with getting Bryce to recognize they belong together. Fans will enjoy this fine look at the price of fame while looking forward to the third brother's tale, THE STRANGER.

THE STRANGER is full of wacky characters in an even nuttier city and was a pleasure to read........2007-07-21
Tyler Balfour is a journalist. Three years ago, he blew the lid on a group of co-ed prostitutes referred to as the Heyday Eight. The story won him a Pulitzer Prize as well as the hate of most of the citizens of the city of Heyday. His biological father passed away and left a third of his property in Heyday to each of his three sons. Tyler isn't close with his brothers. They all had different mothers. Tyler didn't even know that Anderson McClintock was his father until after his mother passed away and his stepfather told him. Tyler decides to return to Heyday to see if he can dig up anything else related to the Heyday Eight story.
Mallory Rackham is a book store owner. Three years ago, Tyler Balfour's story on the Heyday Eight destroyed her life. The family diner her mother owned had been the meeting place for the Eight, and Mallory's ex-husband had been one of the Eight's customers. One of the town's looney residents had burned down her family cafe. Her sister, Mindy had attempted suicide, and her mother was now in a coma caused by a stroke. Mallory had good reason to hate Tyler. He'd pretended to be her friend before, but she wouldn't fall for it this time.
Dilday Merle, a professor at the university is being blackmailed and has asked for Tyler's help with finding the extortionist. Even though the professor didn't have anything to do with the Heyday Eight, his career is in jeopardy if these allegations become known. Tyler returned to the eccentric city of Heyday knowing that the people of the town blame him for ruining their town. He had research to do for his book on the Heyday Eight, and he's agreed to help expose the blackmailer. Mallory is also a victim of the blackmailer. However, she does have something to hide, and if Tyler's writing a book about the Heyday Eight, then she definitely doesn't want her family secret exposed. She's still hurt that Tyler used her friendship and her family's café to get information about the Heyday Eight.
THE STRANGER is one of the books in Kathleen O'Brien's Heroes of Heyday series. I love the idea of the entire city having a circus theme, and it seems the citizens of Heyday are just as eccentric as their city. Tyler Balfour and his brothers may not have grown up together, but their affection was obvious with the way they backed each other up in any situation. Mallory is a truly amazing character. After everything she lost in the Heyday Eight exposure, she still cares deeply for the city and the residents. All of her anger and bitterness is directed toward Tyler. She spends most of her time and energy doing things for others and not enough taking care of herself. The blackmailer remained a mystery until the end of the book. I thought I had it figured out several times and still wasn't able to figure it out until it was spelled out for me. THE STRANGER is full of wacky characters in an even nuttier city and was a pleasure to read.

Book Description
Mary Slessor had every reason-except one-to be afraid. Her God was with her in Calabar, West Africa, in 1876 as He had been during her dreary upbringing in Scotland. Surrounded by warring tribes governed by witchcraft and barbaric rites, Mary Slessor nonetheless went where few others dared-to bring hope and light to the once Dark Continent. Armed with a relentless faith, abetted by her medical skills, linguistic abilities, and a contagious sense of humor, Slessor succeeded in opening Africa to healthy trade- and the message of Christ. And, like David Livingstone, with whom she shared an abhorrence of slavery, she was committed to breathing her last while charting new territory for the Lord.
