In fiction, film, and TV, vampires are a dominant trend of the young millennium. Is it is because the blood-suckers are a perfect metaphor for corrupt politicians and corporate executives? Because alternative sexualities are gaining acceptance? Because the idea of living forever (even if undead) is so alluring? The reasons are unclear. What is clear is that the hottest subgenre (in both popularity and sensuality) is the vampire-huntress subgenre, thanks to Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter and Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer. With L.A. Banks's debut novel, Minion, a tough, sexy new vampire huntress challenges the dominance of Anita Blake and Buffy.
Damali Richards is a rising star of Warriors of Light Records--but her fans would never guess that she is also the most important vampire hunter in a millennium. However, unfortunately for the inexperienced young huntress, the vampires and demons have both discovered her existence. An age-old war escalates to unprecedented heights of violence as the dark forces strive to slay Damali before she comes of age and gains her full powers.
Damali is an appealing heroine, the concept is intriguing, and the series is promising. However, the first novel is rocky. Damali is a vampire-killing martial artist, and Minion presents an epic struggle between good and evil, yet the novel neglects to include a climactic battle between Damali and the bad guys (or much of a climax at all; a sequel is obviously forthcoming). Another problem is that Damali's teacher withholds crucial information from not only the huntress, but also her guardians, who should have learned everything many years ago. In contrast, the characters frequently tell each other things they already know. Readers craving the twisted erotic charge of the Anita Blake novels or the Buffy-Spike relationship may be dissatisfied that sexual tension is less important to Minion; and readers seeking Hamiltonian melodrama may also be disappointed. --Cynthia Ward

Buffy knock off.......2007-10-02
I'll keep this short and to the point. This book is nothing more than a Buffy knockoff. A very bad Buffy knock off. As another reviewer stated, "Buffy in the Hood" with really bad writing. I got tired of always reading about the characters giving each other a pound on the fist...like they did on page 9, page 15...page 35. Oh and again on page 50. Then on page 60. And yet again on page 103. Don't forget the fist pounding on page 169 and 209. I could go on but I think you get the idea. Fist pounding ad nauseum.
Super Reader.......2007-08-04
This is a little like a cross between Guy N. Smith's Sabat, and Angel. A hip, urban vampire sort of thing, with gangsters and nightclubs etc.
The woman in question is a Neteru, a superhuman with a mission : fanger-finishing off. She has a crew to help that know about her, an old almost-boyfriend that becomes involve with the vampire rulers and will become bait, and some good monster hunting scenes.
While the cover etc. seems to fit it into the whole romance thing, that isn't that large an element, any more than a detective book or thriller with a female lead, really.
Some of it might be a touch clunky on setup, particularly some of the crew trying to be cool, but as a quick action book, nothing wrong with this, and I wouldn't be averse to looking at others.
Slow start..........2007-07-09
It's OK...This book started off slow but then picked up a bit in the middle. Not sure if it picked up enough to keep me reading though.
An extended prologue...........2007-06-23
I steered clear of this series for a while because the first book didn't sound like an interesting read from the publisher's description or from reader reviews. Since I didn't go in with a lot of expectations, I wasn't that shocked with my initial lack of interest in the book. To be honest, after reading a third of the way through I was tempted to take the book back to the book store for a refund. The story plot is pretty weak, though once you get past the first book, a plot does begin to coalesce in the other books. While it does set the stage for the future installments, its flow is very choppy and the use of Ebonics does not help. Each character is raggedly fleshed out but not well enough to either empathize or relate to any of them.
However, I still gave it 3 stars because, all previous criticisms aside, it still showed promise of developing into something better. The author's ethnic flavor on the well-worn vampire theme was off the beaten path in verbatim and prose. Many readers typically associate the vampire story from a Euro-centric perspective, understandably. Looking beyond the African American flavor, the author, her story, and her writing style were a refreshing change from my other authors, i.e. Anne Rice, Kelley Armstrong, and Laurell K. Hamilton. I look forward to the next installments.
introduction to a great series.......2007-05-31
Ok, this book isn't the best but once you read The Awakening it all starts to pick up. Looking back this book is more of an introduction to the characters and how they all came together to be a family. We also get the introduction to Carlos. The second book picks up and is a fantastic read but i do suggest you read this granted it is a slow start but it will fill in any blanks for book 2.

Bacterial Pathogenesis: A Molecular Approach
-
The Microbiology Bench Companion
ASIN: 1555811744 |
Book Description
The third edition of this best-selling volume provides an overview of current knowledge of the wide variety of mechanisms used by bacterial pathogens in establishing infection, producing disease, and persisting in the host.
Internationally recognized authorities in the field review bacterial invasion, colonization, and survival; bacterial evasion of host defense mechanisms; bacterial effects on host cell function; and identification, regulation, and transfer of virulence genes. The final chapter presents an interesting examination of new methods for studying virulence mechanisms in the complex in vivo environment, a major development in studies of bacterial pathogenicity. The overall emphasis is on understanding the mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions rather than on focusing on specific research approaches.
Book Description
A brand new edition of the renowned New American Standard Bible, reflecting the best traditions of Cambridge Bible typography and production values. Cambridge's original Pitt Minion Bibleswere notable for their use of a compact typeface designed for Cambridge University Press in the heyday of hot-metal composition. They have been a feature of the Cambridge list for over half a century. The NASB Pitt Minion Reference Edition now follows in this historic tradition, using a stylish modern digital typeface which like its predecessor combines utility and elegance. It uses the Lexicon typeface, carefully chosen for its economical use of space. This is the font used for dictionaries and encyclopaedias because it accommodates a lot of characters in a small space. The result is a classic Bible for the twenty first century produced in a remarkably compact yet readable form. Cambridge's NASB Pitt Minion Bibles feature red-letter text for the words of Christ and full cross-references. Printed on India paper, the pages are sewn for maximum resilience and durability. This Bible has a ribbon to keep the place and a presentation page. Extra study features include a concordance and 16 pages of maps.
Customer Reviews:
First "literal" translation I owned........2007-09-08
The NASB was my first very literal Bible Translation. When it became available in the Cambridge Pitt Minion format I had to have it! It smells and feels wonderful! Great size as well.
Perfect ... except for...................2007-05-17
This is perfect. It's small yet doesn't look cluttered when reading. The quality of the printing is without equal that I have seen. The leather used in the binding is lovely except Cambridge have the leather attached to a relatively stiff backing board. What that means is when the covers are even slightly bent (as one might do gently in the hand), a bubble-like crease develops vertically along the centre of the covers. I imagine that after fair use this would crease or lift permanently from the backing board. However, apart from that one minor feature I find great pleasure in using this NASB Bible. Note also that this edition places the text within paragraph formatting as opposed to verse-by-verse layout. It's actually helpful in reading it as it's too small to study from. Would serve clergy very well for visitation work - handly for a large pocket or small briefcase. Well done Cambridge!
Beautiful book in every aspect.......2007-03-18
This is a beautiful book from cover to cover. I love its compact size and compact but readable print, as well as the soft leather cover. It's a joy to own, to hold and to read!
Old Fashioned Quality in a New Bible.......2007-03-17
A good translation: the NAS is readable like the NIV and accurate like the ESV. A good version for study.
Pitt Minion is a good size to carry and still readable. The high quality binding and leather is worth the price.
A must have for NASB/Bible Collectors.......2007-01-22
I have many bibles, and won't attempt to argue the ESV vs. RSV vs, KJV vs NASB, etc. issue, I own several copies of each. However, I must say that this is very close to the best Bibles, I have ever owned. From an overall quality perspective, its probably the best, from a materials perspective, it might be second after the Signature Series from Thomson (which does not have the NASB available). The binding, leather, pages, and very importantly, print quality, is just wonderful to hold and use! Add to this, the small yet readable and useful size, and the concordance and references, this is a must have! IF you're looking for a small, reference NASB, this Bible is undoubtedly the best available.

Book Description
Cambridge introduced the Pitt Minion Bibles in the 1930s. To date the Pitt Minions have only been available in the King James Version. Now, for the first time, the New International Version is available in this style. The Bibles use the Lexicon typeface, the font used for dictionaries and encyclopaedias because it accommodates a lot of characters in a small space. This economical use of space means that the book itself is a slim and compact volume, convenient for carrying on the person. Cambridge's NIV Pitt Minion Bibles feature red-letter text for the words of Christ and full cross-references. Extra study features include footnotes, a Table of Weights & Measures, a concordance and 15 maps. The Bibles are printed on India paper with art-gilt edges and the pages are sewn, not glued, for maximum resilience and durability. This Bible has a ribbon to keep the place and a presentation page. It is bound in goatskin leather.
Customer Reviews:
First Bible to "Speak" to me........2007-09-01
After my Salvation the NIV was the first Bible I ever bought to bring home the peace and hope of God's word. I am aware of a few problems some have with the area of DE types of translation approach. I think these are often overstated. The NIV helped me find my way, I now have a number of translations and yet I am rereading Mark in the NIV right now. Cambridge did a great job with this edition and I am most pleased! Grace and Peace.
Incredible Bible.......2007-07-25
This Cambridge Bible is one of the best bibles you could get. The construction is absolutely flawless. Some leather bibles need to be "cracked in" to shape. By that I mean the binding and papers are stiff (some papers typically stick together from the shine). Not so with this Bible.
The Black goatskin cover is very nice and protects the Bible very well. The pages are thin, but tough, and are not very transparent (words from the other pages don't clutter the page you're reading). The pages are sewn perfectly, it opens very, very nicely (the first open didn't have a single crack/noise). The ribbon to mark the page is wonderfully sewn and extends past the bottom of the page. As for the content, it's everything you would expect in a good bible that is not a study Bible. Just the very simplest of footnotes common to all NIV Bibles, a good cross-reference systems, and a good concordance at the back. The maps at the back are nice also. As for the Word itself, that's exactly what you get. If you're looking for a simple NIV Bible where the scripture is all you want, no fancy introductions or crazy footnotes, then this is it. Easy to read font, Christ's words in red.
The size of the Bible is perfect. It's very easy to carry, yet it's definitely not too small by any means. Just the right size, giving the impression of having some serious elegant significance. A truly beautiful Bible. The only downfall is the size of the font is very small, so if you have trouble reading small print this would not be a good Bible. It is the same print used in some dictionaries and encyclopedia's so you can check those as a reference. The font is bigger then most compact Bibles though, so if you are using one of those as your carry around, this will be a big step up in print and quality.
Overall, it is definitely worth the price. Being the instruction manual for our lives on earth, this is a very worthy edition if you're looking for NIV. Cambridge (being Bible publishers since 1591) do not fall short.
Great product! Best NIV for its size........2006-08-05
Cambridge Bibles in general are my favorite because of their superb quality. This NIV has all the basic features without any opinions or fluff. To me, it's worth spending the money for a quality Bible when we spend this much for a fuel fill-up for our car or day shopping for groceries. This is a once in a lifetime purchase. For me, I'm glad it will last that long.
A Wonderful Cambridge Bible!.......2006-03-26
I have always enjoyed Cambridge Bibles. You cannot beat the quality, the binding, the leather, the Indian pages. Cambridge Bibles are simply put the best Bibles you can ever purchase.
This edition is much like the King James Version of the Pitt Minion edition. I purchased the goatskin edition and simply loved it. The Indian pages smell and feel like the old KJV Bibles of long ago.
The only drawbacks to this Bible are first the letters are small so if you wear reading glasses you might want to skip this Bible. Secondly, the books of the Bible overlap on the same pages in some cases. I prefer the a new book to start on its on page. And thirdly, I prefer not to have the words of Christ in red since all Scripture is God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
Nonetheless this Bible is wonderful! I gladly give Cambridge five stars for this Bible.
Book Description
This classic Cambridge edition of the King James Version is now reissued in a variety of colours and binding materials to satisfy today’s continuing demand for high-quality editions of the KJV in an eminently portable format. Cambridge’s Pitt Bibles were originally launched in the 1930s, in the wake of the typographic revival which took place in England after the first world war. They were notable for their slimness – achieved by using a variant of the Times New Roman typeface, specially cut by the famous Times typographer Stanley Morison for Cambridge University Press. The result – Times Semi-bold – is the typeface also later used in the acclaimed Concord edition. The Pitt Minion Reference edition was also the first Bible to employ the innovative Cambridge bold-figure cross-reference system (also a feature of the Concord editions). All in all, it is a neat and elegant book, easy to slip into a pocket or purse. It comes in a range of bonded and real leathers and a variety of colours, together with a ribbon marker and presentation page.
Customer Reviews:
Very Nice little bible.......2007-09-26
This KJV Pitt Minion in the Brown Goatskin leather is a beautiful Bible. The leather is soft, supple, and wonderful to hold. However, I like the sturdiness of the French Moroccan leather better. The type in this Pitt Minion is very clear and readable, unlike that in the NIV edition. It does not lay flat the way it should, but I understand that it will eventually do so through normal use. One problem, as others have noted, is that the inner margin is too narrow and you have to pull it back more in order to read the text. This problem should correct itself through normal use and time, supposedly.
You should also know that this KJV pitt does not include a concordance, but it does have nice cross references in the text.
Great quality Bible.......2007-02-08
Bible is wonderful morrocan leather and nice compact easy to read print. The only thing wrong with this bible is as others have stated, the inner margin is way to small. You definetly have to purposely bend the Bible to see the print in the middle. It is getting a little bit better with use but they definitely need to put some more space in the middle margin. I am able to use this as my main day to day bible though and am all in all very happy with it.
Great for travel, too compressed for main Bible.......2006-09-09
I was looking for a replacement Bible for my current NKJV slimline Bible for daily use. I wanted references (which my current Bible doesn't have), leather binding, slim, and if KJV, I didn't want the pronunciation key in line with the text.
I really like this Bible and it seems to have all the features I wanted. The binding is beautiful. The leather feel is nice and flexible. The font is nice and the red-letter color does not detract from the readability. It has references and is slim and it has a pronunciation table at the beginning of the Bible, so I don't have to try to skip over the symbols that are not part of the English language as I read. The pages of this Bible are a bit thicker (better quality) than my current slimline, so they should be more lasting.
My main problem with the Bible was readability. The size of the Bible itself is a bit smaller than listed on the description, since the dimensions are for the box the Bible comes in. The page dimentions are 6.8" x 4.8" x 0.75", which is smaller than I expected. In order to use slightly thicker paper (a good thing), the text spacing is quite reduced. This would not be bad, except for the fact that the font is also small. The font is readable (I have 20/20), but a bit small for reading in bed at night. As another reviewer mentioned, the inside margin at the binding is too small (it is narrower than the ribbon included with the Bible). It is also narrower than the outside margin. This makes it difficult to read unless I press on the pages to open the binding. One of my pet peeves with reading books is to not press the binding, so this goes against one of my main practices when reading books in general. I would have loved this Bible if it were 1 to 1.5 inches taller and proportionally wider while enlarging the font a bit to keep the current layout. Also, make the inside margin wider! If this were the case, the Bible would be perfect.
Bottom line, I love the Bible, but I won't be able to use it as my daily Bible, so although I am torn about it, I am sending it back.
Excellent, One Notable Flaw.......2006-03-27
Recently purchased the KJV Pitt Minion Goatskin in Black.
What I like:
Goatskin is a treat! This fine grained, glove soft leather is exceptionally smooth and supple. Care must be taken when searching for a reference not to bend the cover back along with the pages (as is unfortunately a habit among many Americans). This leather is thin enough that it bubbles and creases if mishandled in this way.
Paper is of the highest quality. Although exceptionally thin, there is very little shadow through from the opposite page's type. This allows this little volume to measure in at just 3/4"
I love the art gilt edging. Those who have pre-1970's Bibles are familiar with the red/gold edging.
The size is just right. This Bible is identical in size to my Day-timer binder, allowing it to slip into a briefcase or handbag. I found the smaller Bibles on the market were much thicker, actually taking up more room. It fits nicely into a desk drawer, too. Of note: There is no Bible cover on the market sized to this Bible. Because of it's soft binding, you will want to keep the box or, as I did, stitch up a small fabric envelope to protect it when travelling.
The type is comfortably sized at 6.5 point. I can read without my glasses (20/60 vision). Because of the font, I find this Bible as easy to read as my larger Life Application Bible.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that each paragraph begins with the first word or two in capitals. Since I often read several chapters at a sitting in this Bible, I find this very helpful.
Except in the very beginning and end of the Bible, this particular edition stays open without being held, BUT...
What I don't like:
The binding is such that the inner column on each page cannot be read easily. It cannot be read at all in most portions of the Bible without forcing the binding open. After corresponding with Baker Books (the U.S. company that handles Cambridge Bibles), I have been assured that the binding will loosen with age and this will not continue to be a problem. I find it notable that the least expensive "gift Bibles" on the market leave a sufficient margin so that words are not caught in the binding. I would be willing to sacrifice the inner "reference" column in order to free up the center copy. I will revise this review if I find that 1) The Bible does indeed loosen after several months use or 2) That I have purchased a volume that is not up to the usual standard. Since I purchased mine over the internet, I have not had the opportunity to compare it to any other. Only one bookstore in another part of my state carries this particular volume, so I will have to wait to see how mine compares until I make it down there.
The two other things that I find odd, though not necessarily a problem are as follows:
There are several pages prior to Genesis 1 with the pronunciations of every difficult name/place in the Bible. This is presumably to aid the reader without cluttering up the text with phonetic markings.
There are a series of alpha-numeric codes in the bottom margin throughout the Bible that I can only assume identify the signatures (smaller "books" sewn together to form the entire volume). Although small, these are a bit perplexing in a book of this quality.
Overall:
This Bible is a joy to use. It is everything my Life Application Study Bible is not -- compact, lightweight, and straightforward. The price is such that only those who have a love for fine books will be willing to invest in this volume, but it is currently marketed in several other far less expensive bindings for those who like the size but not the price! I would not recommend this Bible for those who are looking for a true "travel" Bible as it does not have a zipper or snap flap to protect the pages. Those who treasure older Bibles will love the look and feel of this particular edition, as it retains the feel and quality of the Bibles of bygone times. I will update this review regarding the center margin/binding "problem" as soon as it is resolved.
Excellent carry bible.......2006-02-02
Having never seen one of the Camberage Pitt Minion Reference Bibles, I didn't quite know what to expect. The quality of this book is one of the best I've seen. It is small, but not too small. The print is small but easy to read. There are no frills to speak of except the column cross reference, which is adeqate, but not as good as a Thompson xref. The lack of markers over words make the xref a little more challenging to use, but adds to the readability of the main text. The goatskin is really soft and supple. Everyone who sees it recognizes it as a quality piece from the start. I can't imagine a better carry bible to own.

Nifty reference.......2007-08-18
Are you a Gaming Master or Dungeon Master who runs regular role playing game sessions? If so, then you may want to get a copy of this booklet. It's filled with monsters (though why they call them minions is beyond me) that you can use in virtually any fantasy setting. None of them are all that difficult to dispatch but some are way rougher than others. The Puppet Master is one example and he's a pretty bad, bad tough guy to beat. He makes a great over all boss for an ongoing campaign.
Easy to read. Easy to find the monster type you want. Easily adaptable to any fantasy RPG session. Plus it's got monsters your PC's never seen before - you know the guys/gals who have meta-game knowledge? This book offers monsters they never heard of before! Hah!
Well done book of monsters.......2006-03-15
Fearsome Foes is a well written addition to the d20 catalog. All of the monsters are well thought out and are intentionally not campaign specific. The best feature of the monster listings is that each one has hints and tips on how to successfully integrate it into an existing world.
My only issue is with layout. It would have been nice if the book had listed one monster per page; rather than following the MM format of putting one monster after another with no breaks. But that hardly detracts from the book's value.
The artwork is reminiscent of 1st and 2nd edition AD&D monster books. It gives the book an almost retro feel.
All in all, I'm very happy with my purchase.
Get your Minions.......2002-01-15
Of all the D20 products out so far, this has got to be the best I've seen. Not only is the content excellent, but the artwork and layout is also of the highest quality. Many of the other D20 items out there are good enough in content to use, but aesthetically fall short. Not so with Minions. If this is any indication to the quality we will continue to see out of Bastion Press, everyone else should pay attention. Buy this for your D&D campaign, you won't be sorry.

Book Description
Cambridge introduced the Pitt Minion style in the 1930s. This is the first NIV Pitt Minion Bible. It uses the Lexicon typeface, carefully chosen for its economical use of space. This is the font used for dictionaries and encyclopaedias because it accommodates a lot of characters in a small space. This means that the book itself is a slim and compact volume, convenient for carrying on the person. Cambridge's NIV Pitt Minion Bibles feature red-letter text for the words of Christ and full cross-references. Extra study features include a concordance and 16 pages of maps. They are printed on India paper and the pages are sewn, not glued, for maximum resilience and durability. This Bible has a ribbon to keep the place and a presentation page.

Great quality, very small print.......2007-09-26
This is certainly a quality bible, based on the NIV. However, the print is very small. I have the KJV Pitt Minion and though the print is also small it is much more readable. The paper in the KJV seems to be more opaque, but it may be just a bolder print.
I will add that the French Morocco leather that they used is nice and the binding allows the bible to lay open flat. This edition also comes with a concordance, which my KJV doesn't have. As always, Cambridge does make the highest quality bibles. Even with the small print, it's a nice Bible. Still, preference should be given for more literal translations such as the KJV, NKJV, NASB, or ESV.
