Book Description
An eloquent, utterly charming guide to discovering the interconnectedness of mathematics
Why seemingly unrelated mathematical truths are connected in simple and beautiful equations continues to stump even mathematicians. This recreational math book takes the reader on a fantastic voyage into the world of natural numbers. From the earliest discoveries of the ancient Greeks to various fundamental characteristics of the natural number sequence, Clawson explains fascinating mathematical mysteries in clear and easy prose. He delves into the heart of number theory to see and understand the exquisite relationships among natural numbers, and ends by exploring the ultimate mystery of mathematics: the Riemann hypothesis, which says that through a point in a plane, no line can be drawn parallel to a given line.
While a professional mathematician's treatment of number theory involves the most sophisticated analytical tools, its basic ideas are surprisingly easy to comprehend. By concentrating on the meaning behind various equations and proofs and avoiding technical refinements, Mathematical Mysteries lets the common reader catch a glimpse of this wonderful and exotic world.

Excellent introduction to number theory.......2006-10-06
This book is a gentle introduction to number theory. The material covered here is absolutely fascinating. Once you get into the text you will be hooked. Although I have read other stuff in this genre what is different about this book is that the author does not shun from giving you equations that explain the IDEA and BEAUTY behind the numbers.
This book will give you hours of absolute delight. Excellent work.
Study Guide.......2004-05-06
I was a student of Mr. Clawson's, and highly recommend any student of his to use this book as a study guide.
Superb book by a highly intuitive author.......2003-07-14
This book is superbly written by a highly intuitive author. The author knows how to connect to his intended readers. Book is highly informative and the equations are well defined and explained. Once you read a few pages, you are hooked. I just hope that Mr. Calvin C. Clawson will write more books on Mathematics, he will be doing a great service to would-be-mathematicians like me. More power to you sir!
Great introduction to Number Theory.......2001-07-04
Clawson does an excellent job of introducing the reader to a variety of number theory topics. With each topic, he provides enough information to understand the idea and appreciate its implications without being overly technical or tedious. Suprisingly, an advanced understanding of math is not required to enjoy this book. If you have an interst in number theory and need a starting point, this is the book.
One of the best books about math that I have read........1998-08-01
Clawson writes with refreshing enthusiasm and really conveys how much fun it can be to explore the nature of mathematics. Although there are many equations in the book, Clawson uses them not only to help the readers understand the mathematical ideas, but also to show how truly great mathematicians can come up with extremely elegant expressions to describe what at first would seem to be completely unmanageable concepts.

Smart book for smart kids.......2007-01-11
Deceptively simple in the beginning, this story builds in complexity and excitement from start to finish. It is an intelligent story made exciting through mathematics. Anno's Magic Seeds is a clever introduction to the concept of investing toward the future. As always, the illustrations are lovely.
A major disappointment.......2002-11-27
Love Mitsumasa Anno's other books, but the wonderful intricate drawings are missing from this book, and the story is easily 60% too long, especially for children.
Creative Math Lesson.......2000-04-16
Anno's books are great for teaching fun math lessons. I readthe book to my sixth graders and had them figure the answers to thequestions as we went. They loved it! They really have to listen carefully, so it makes a great lesson in listening skills as well.
Using Math in the real world.......2000-03-31
Anno's Magic Seeds is yet another book written by Mitsumasa Anno that integrates literature with mathematics. This book is a useful tool for teachers attempting to provide a connection of math in the real world for their students. The story is enchanting and it certainly proved to be a creative way for beginning a math lesson- atleast it was for my 4th graders! I highly recommend this or any of Anno's books to stimulate children's interest in mathematics!
I give it a 3.5.......2000-03-28
Sure, this book is real cute, but it is missing something. It is strange, and my nephew wasn't thrilled by it. I bought it for his because of his obsession with seeds. It is no run of the mill book, but it could do better
Book Description
A funny, entertaining introduction to Ben Franklin and his many inventions, including the story of how he created the "magic square." A magic square is a box of nine numbers arranged so that any line of three numbers adds up to the same number, including on the diagonal! Teachers and kids will love finding out about this popular teaching tool that is still used in elementary schools today!
Customer Reviews:
Awesome book!!!.......2005-10-17
I love this book! It introduced me to magic squares. Sometimes they're hard but not always. I read the book in 3rd grade. We were doing math groups and Mrs. Wrigely said" Today we are doing Magic squares."
What is a magic square?" I asked.
"It is 9 cubes that all have to equal the same number." Mrs. Wrigely
And that's how I was introduced to magic squares. I recommend this book for kids 6 and above. I think that because some words may be a little challenging for kids that are 5 or 4.

MY BOOK REVIEW BY THE COSMIC GENIUS.......2004-09-28
This book was great for kid's teenagers and adults. What I'm trying to say is that this book is suitable for all ages. I think elementary teachers should read this to their students. This book is great to teach kids about the past and how inventions are still used today, in different ways. I learned how Ben Franklin invented most of the instruments we use today; like the stove, bifocals, flippers and many other inventions. I encourage you to buy this book if you have young kids or not.

Customer Reviews:
One of the most fantastic books on close-up magic........1998-03-15
This book is very nice. It teaches you how to do magic with any houshold items. There are 2 chapters with cards too. NONE of the tricks described here use any sort of slight of hand. It is 100% mathematical tricks than ANYONE can do. And they are all nice cloe-up tricks which are the type of tricks which are most baffling. Martin Garder, the author of this book is a very talented writer. He wrote many books on mathematics and science. This is a great book and I recomend EVERYONE should get it even if they are not into magic that much.

A greater book couldn't be written..........1998-06-29
This book talks about various aspects of fractals, biomorphs and many other very, very interesting aspects of maths. A book for beginners, intermediate and advanced readers. Algorithms and much more for computer programming. A MUST HAVE for everybody interested on fractals and computer science.

Customer Reviews:
The combination of magic and mathematics is fun and can be educational.......2007-09-22
All but the most rigid of personalities loves to see magic performed, so if it can be used to teach something, the combination is an effective learning tool. In this book, Simon demonstrates several magic tricks and also describes the mathematical principles that make them work. In my opinion, some of the tricks would be excellent tools for teaching later elementary school students some basic and at times sophisticated mathematics.
The chapter topics are:
*) Magic with numbers - most of these tricks are based on the properties of the decimal number system and basic algebra.
*) Magic with shapes - there tricks are based on simple topological properties of objects such as ropes and rubber bands.
*) Calendar magic - these tricks require the use of a Gregorian calendar and are based on the number of days in a week, basic properties of the decimal number system and basic algebra.
*) Mental magic - the tricks in this chapter are based on the memorization of specific rules and how those rules can be used so that you appear as a human calculator.
*) Magic squares - this is a fitting chapter, as magic squares are a long-running staple of recreational mathematics, which is what this book is about.
*) Magic with ordinary objects- the tricks here involve objects like matchsticks and coins. No sleight of hand or objects up the sleeve here.
*) Magic with cards - these are the magic tricks that have always been my favorites. When I was younger, my brother was deeply into card tricks and when he learned a new one, he would show me and challenge me to figure it out. I must confess that I was often stumped, although in many cases I was able to figure out how the trick worked.
These are tricks that require knowledge of mathematics to understand them, which can be of benefit to educators. To many people, mathematics, like advanced technology, is equivalent to magic. By expressing mathematics in a form that is more understandable, magic can provide another effective learning tool.
A fun. fun book for all ages whether you just read or do it!.......1998-11-05
You'll never tire of thumbing through this book from time to time and trying some of the author's "magic" on yourself and/or your friends. It's the kind of book you'd buy as a gift for your child or grand-child--after you've read it for yourself first, of course! It's a "keepsake" sort of volume that will never grow tiresome.
Book Description

Calculations have been concealed; tricks are carefully streamlined for quick understanding and flawless performance. Master such number phenomena as Lightning Calculations, Giant Memory, Magic Squares, nearly 100 more.

Look smart! - Required reading for math teachers........2007-08-30
This book is a fabulous value for the money. One of the magic square stunts can be mastered in about an hour and will make people think your a genious.
If you work with kids in any capacity, the tricks in this book are a wonderful way to bring math to life for them.
Gotta have it!.......1999-05-11
If you see a book written by Karl Fulves on magic that has the words Self-Working in the title then buy it. There is a wealth of knowledge in each of these books. -Diamond Jim Tyler
Book Description
Mathematicians, puzzle aficionados, and magicians are experts in the unsolvable, the undoable, and the unbelievable. Their currency is paradox. Martin Gardner stands at the nexus of these communities, and this collection brings together offerings in tribute to him. The list of contributors reads like a Who's Who in Science and the World of Puzzles. The breadth of contributions in form and content, ranging from puzzles to poems, from brainteasers to brief biographical accounts of the greatest puzzler of all, is sure to appeal to a wide variety of readers and the fan club of Martin Gardner.
Customer Reviews:
Understated title, great material.......2004-10-28
If there were superlatives that have not yet been applied to Martin Gardner, then I would use them here. While most know him as an excellent writer of mathematics, many know him as a conduit of knowledge in mathematics, puzzles and magic, a role that has earned him many close friends. This book is a collection of problems, puzzles and other assorted exercises for the mind that were written as part of the gatherings for Gardner (G4Gs). The fourth took place in February, 2000 and unfortunately, also had to include tributes to some who had passed on.
As befits his stature among everyone engaged in the pursuit of mathematics, puzzles and magic, the entries in this book are the best. The range is also consistent with the enormous variety of interests that Gardner has. There are seven sections in the book:
The Toast: Tributes, remembrances of those who have passed.
Tantalizing Appetizers: Challenges for the Reader, a series of quickie puzzles.
Smoked Ham: A Course in Magic, explanations of some basic magic tricks.
Chef's Caprice, some amusing stories that involve wordplay.
Wild Game (and Puzzles), some truly diabolical puzzles.
Mathematical Entrees, some longer papers on mathematics.
Mathematical Treats, short papers with a mathematical bent.
If you are a recreational mathematician or puzzler, then this is a book you must read. For the first time in my life, I laughed when I read a math book.

Customer Reviews:
Easy is tough, tough is easy.......2007-06-17
The Big Book of Sudoku for Dummies rates its puzzles as Easy, Tricky, Tough, and Diabolical. With enough patience, any sudoku puzzle, even one with only one initial number, can be solved. The Diabolical puzzles in this book, and in Heron's earlier collaboration with Edmund James ("Sudoku for Dummies") are in this category: they are truly (and trivially) diabolical. But whereas in the earlier Dummies book the Easy puzzles were mostly Easy, the Tricky were mostly Tricky, and the Tough were mostly Tough, in this volume, as the previous reviewer notes, these categorical assignments appear to have been made randomly.
As Wikipedia notes, sudokus of different difficulty "satisfy different psychological needs." Don't expect this book to satisfy your psychological needs. When you sit down with a puzzle from this book, you never know if it will take ten minutes or hours.
Big Disappointment.......2006-09-23
I have had reasonably good luck over the years with Dummies books, but this one, as I say, is a big disappointment. The instructions are minimal, and then the author leaves you to more or less "sink or swim" with his array of 600 puzzles. Even the easy ones are quite challenging, especially for a beginner such as myself. If you are new to Sudoku, or if you have gotten into it a bit but are still working to become reasonably competent, I definitely would not recommend this book. Look somewhere else for the guidance you need.
