3 out of 5 stars Superseded by: "Selling is Dead".......2007-07-07

In it's day this would rate six stars out of five, but it's been superseded by "Selling is Dead" authored by Marc Miller and Jason Sinkovitz. In fact, the authors are students of Mr. Rackham and give him ample credit for the ground breaking work of "Major Account Sales Strategy."

4 out of 5 stars Spin Selling is his best; this is very good.......2007-02-04

A good effort. Major accounts are the key to all solid selling; Rackman is always good to read. What company wouldn't want their people to read a selling book? See also Strategic Selling by Miller and Sales Skills by Simply Media. Amazon has both.

5 out of 5 stars SPIN Theory gets you on the table, this book tells you how to get the final business.......2007-01-21

I thought SPIN theory is what you need first, but after reading this book, based on my personal experience, use of SPIN theory earns the opportunity for one to get on the table, but doesn't mean the business is in your hand. There are few more phases that you have to go through and this book talks through that. Just because the customer has realized a need for something, does not make them write the check -- lot of other things come into play such as do I need this now, am I making the correct decision in going with the choice etc. Must read for some one who is trying to do sales.

Forget business sales, my bar for testing any of these theories is not at work, but at home -- I always try and test these theories at home (with my family) and if it works at home, then IT obviously works outside.

Great book to read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent .......2006-07-19

If the title of the book suggests you something you are looking for, don't hesitate and buy it. It is excellent. It displays a completely actionable model of the selling -or buying- cycle. It describes the phases of the cycle and it gives the strategic principles to follow in each one of them. Mr. Rackham is a true expert in this field.

5 out of 5 stars Top 5 all time best sales books.......2005-10-26

This book is in my top 5 all time best written sales books ever. Neils approach is unique, it stands the test of time. He talks about the buyers cycle as it relates to the sellers process. They need to be in alignment...if not, you will not get the sale. This book is a must read for anyone selling. A good compliment to SPIN and really any value based selling methodology including ROI Selling.

5 out of 5 stars THE BULLETPROOF FIREWALL!!.......2006-05-22

Are you getting ready to take your Check Point certification exam? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Robert Stephens, Barry Stiefel, Stephen Watkins, Simon Desmeules and Eli Faskha, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that is the perfect reference for anyone migrating from earlier versions of Check Point's flagship firewall/VPN product; as well as, those deploying VPN-1/FireWall-1 for the first time.

Stephens, Stiefel, Watkins, Desmeules and Faskha, begin by discussing the various methods that are deployed among different firewall vendors and open source solutions. Then, the authors discuss the significant changes between NG AI and NGX and partitions these changes into eight major categories. They continue with a review of what must be done prior to the actual installation and configuration of a Check Point environment. Next, the authors guide you through the necessary steps to perform the NGX upgrade. Then they take you on a tour of the interface used to configure your NGX installation: the SmartDashboard. They also discuss the need for tracking and walk you through a few configuration examples. Then, they discuss both basic and advanced concepts for network security and reveal how Check Point's technologies supply relief for current threats. The authors continue by showing you how to enable or disable Network Address Translation for a single host, for a range of addresses, or for an entire network. Next, they address the best way to authenticate users so they can access privileged resources. Then, the authors show you how Check Point FireWall-1 can integrate with third-party products. They continue by focusing on configuring site-to-site VPNs and the different design considerations that are involved. Next, the authors discuss the increasing number of employees that are either working comfortably at home or just simply away from the office, who need corporate access as if working locally. Then, they examine the functionality of SmartUpdate as a SmartConsole client in your Check Point environment. They also take you on a tour of SecurePlatform with the different operating system capabilities and the Check Point supported add-ons to SPLAT. Next, the authors demonstrate how to set up SmartView Monitor in a way that will allow you to view all your security components that your SmartCenter manages. Finally, the authors show, first the reason why VoIP should be secured and, second, how it is done.

The goal of this most excellent book is to cover all of NGX's dramatic changes and new, enhanced features. More importantly, you will learn how to secure the integrality of your network's data, communications, and applications from a multitude of blended threats.

5 out of 5 stars All the new NGX features.......2006-03-17

Any familiar with prior versions of Check Point's firewall program and newcomers to CheckPoint alike will find CONFIGURING CHECK POINT NGX VPN-1/FIREWALL-1 an important overview of all the new features in NGX. From working with the SmartView Tracker tool and understanding how a Check Point VPN-1 Pro Gateway administrator evolves to work into network security to handling authentication and integrity issues globally, everything from building the platform to licensing is covered in detail. An excellent survey of all the enhanced features and changes.

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference Book.......2006-02-17

'Configuring Check Point NGX VPN-1/Firewall-1' by Robert Stephens is another good book by Syngress for IT Professionals. Syngress has really focussed on IT setup and configuration for it's latest releases of books and they have done a solid job. Packing over 600 pages of material into this guide, if you use Checkpoint at your job, you would be wise to pick up a copy of this book for your desk at work.

4 out of 5 stars Near the official courseware.......2006-01-25

This book is written by many respected authors and security professionals. Among them there is Barry J. Stiefel, the man who founded the first Check Point User Group (www.cpug.org).

I'm a Check Point Certified Instructor (CCSI) and can assure this book covers a lot of topics included in official Check Point VPN-1 NGX coursewares.

On Chapter 13 about Check Point VPN clients solutions it includes a Integrity technology discussion, acquired from ZoneLabs and to be merged with SecureClient.

On Chapter 14 it also includes a lot of details from the official Check Point SecurePlatform courseware.

The last chapter, Chapter 16 about VoIP, is even better than on the official course manual.

The book misses more details on some covered product features, coverage of some excluded features, OPSEC 3rd party interoperability examples, architectural problems discussion (like logging strategy, rulebase optimization, etc.), but it's a good book.

I strongly recommend it to anyone didn't take the course and want to have a wide coverage of many VPN-1 NGX features.
Who already attended the official course won't find here anything new.

    Book Description

GLOBAL MARKETING: Foreign Entry, Local Marketing, and Global Management can be used at the better undergraduate programs where the students have had some exposure to global management or global business or in the MBA curriculum. The subtitle for this text is an important way to remember what makes this book distinct. This text offers a three-pronged approach to Global Marketing. That approach is Foreign Entry, Local Marketing, and Global Management and this represents the structure for the text. Johansson addresses how you market an existing product in new global markets and also discusses how a company develops a new product for a global market. This discussion takes into consideration the culture and needs of those customers. Most International Marketing books have a separate chapter for each of the environments (legal and regulatory, political, Business Customs, etc) and then they launch into a discussion of marketing management for global markets. However, Johansson only has a separate chapter on culture and then he integrates the rest of the environment discussions throughout the text and where appropriate. This too is a distinct feature of the text.

    Book Description

Johansson’s Global Marketing, 4/e utilizes a three-pronged framework to organize the discussion of how to conduct global business: Foreign Entry, Local Marketing, and Global Management. Johansson seeks to develop the varied skills a marketing manager needs to be successful in each of these tasks. The discussion progresses from how to market an existing product outside of the domestic market to how to develop a new product for specific local markets and then broadens the scope to discuss marketing and management topics from a global managerial perspective. Legal, regulatory, political, and cultural, issues are discussed as appropriate throughout the text. Excellent examples and cases, many of which are drawn from the author’s rich international experience, help students move from concept to application. Most International Marketing books have 6-7 separate chapters up front that discuss the legal and regulatory, political, and cultural environments before they begin to discuss global market entry. Johansson presumes that the students have a basic appreciation of these environments and begins the market entry discussion after 3 introductory chapters. The orientation of this text is more managerial and less descriptive. This text is used both as the first course in the undergraduate level and in MBA level courses.

    4 out of 5 stars Good condition.......2005-09-03

Received item in a good condition and made special provisions to send it faster due to my constraints.

2 out of 5 stars Ripping you off.......2005-07-21

This is book is what in marketing they call the rip-off strategy.

Chances are you're not going to pay this outrageous price for such a boring book unless you are forced to for a class, as was my case. It's bad enough that the publisher has jacked up the price into the stratosphere, but to rub it in with black and white pictures is just wrong. Shame on McGraw Hill. Shame on the author. Shame on everyone involved in the selling of this book, including Amazon.

Then there's the content of the book. And even by marketing standards (this is my 4th marketing class) it's outrageously bland and dull.

5 out of 5 stars Most Complete Confined Space Rescue Ext.......2002-11-27

I am the rescue team coordinator for a coastal South Carloina Fire Department. I have been searching for a complete Con Space program to teach our team members and have finally found it.

I met Alan and company about a year ago during the development of this book. They were instructing a Con space tech course. I was so pleased with the content of the course, I new we couldn't go wrong with this text.

The technical information is accurate and easy to understand. The rope and rigging techniques have provided us with another point of view and have been added to our "bag of tricks".

From an instructional point of view ALL THE MATERIALS YOU NEED ARE PROVIDED. Powerpoint, outlines...its all there!

If you are in need of a COMPLETE confined space training curriculum look no further.

5 out of 5 stars Most Useful Volume on Confined Spaces.......2002-10-24

This text is perhaps the best treatise on the subject of Confined Spaces that I have ever had the opportunity to review. The authors have quite effectively provided the most comprehensive manual on this subject to have been published to date. While most authors typically address the subject of confined space entry and rescue as a chapter or maybe just a paragraph or two in some larger volume on a related subject, this particular book is dedicated to only confined space entry. This makes the text unique and quite useful. Its utility extends from the classroom to the field. The latter of which will gain the most benefit from using this text. Virtually every subject of concern associated with confined spaces is thoroughly addressed in the chapters of this book. Specifically, this text provides detailed and accurate information and guidance to those who must either supervise or work in confined spaces. It also has extensive information on work planning requirements and, of great importance, essential rescue procedures. It effectively addresses the hazards and the control measures that have been successfully implemented to either eliminate or reduce/control the risks of hazard exposure to acceptable levels. The detailed treatment on emergency response procedures is perhaps the greatest feature since this is where lives are either saved or lost in the "real world" of confined space operations. In this regard, I found this information presented here invaluable.

Finally, the CD that accompanies the book is extremely useful. It contains videos and other materials that can easily be adapted to supplement existing training programs (or even aid in the development of new programs). As a Fire Chief, I am pleased to find this quality textbook on the topic of Confined Space Rescue. The book is a great one for initial rescue training, and also is great reference material for refresher programs, and anyone going into confined space rescue. The pictures and the graphics do not require a "Ricky Rescue Engineering Degree" to understand the material. I believe that procedures and style of rescue presented in the material definitely cover all applicable standards and regulations. I recommend this book, the rating of the book exceeds 5 stars.

          Book Description

When an application is part of the Microsoft Office suite, it's sure to be a leader in its field. In the realm of desktop database management, Access is top dog with millions of users. But this is one dog that can bite. Although Access is a powerful, relational tool with the fetching talents of a Labrador, it's not an easy beast to train.

Still, millions of users count on Access for everything from managing parts databases to running Web catalogs to working as a front end to mondo SQL databases. But Access is chockablock with annoyances---report hassles, query conundrums, VBA bugs, arcane error messages, and more.

O'Reilly's Annoyances series offer real-world help, right now, and Fixing Access Annoyances continues tradition. You'll not only squash bugs and workaround Access' limits, but you'll learn how to use Access to the max, whether you're a newbie or a seasoned pro. Coverage includes install/configuration annoyances, building better tables and queries, creating forms that work right, generating reliable and sophisticated reports, pulling in data from a variety of sources, crafting macros and VBA code to customize Access, and much more.

You could grab those other books for help, but do they solve problems from page one? Meet a book of a different stripe. The authors come armed with knowledge of the program's quirks, design hurdles and interface snags. They provide you with battle plans in Fixing Access Annoyances to save you time and bouts of hair pulling.

Stop information from spiraling out of control when working with Access and trying to make this #$@@#$ thing work! Don't let its quirks, bugs, and troublemaking features beat you. Who you gonna call for help? Instead of waiting on the line for tech support or searching for the answer on the Internet with its too many resources to find exactly what you need, take control of databases with Fixing Access Annoyances, your partner on database adventures.

I wish I had this book when I began programming Access, it would have saved me a lot of frustration. The writing is easy to follow and it contains a wealth of information I had to either learn through trial and error or lots of searching google groups.

That said, there isn't much of value here for someone with a couple of years Access experience--you've already learned this stuff through trial and error or searching google groups!

I only found one piece of incorrect information--it is possible to create page headers on a subreport by creating a dummy grouping level (=1) and putting your headers there. The book says the only way to do it is by putting the headers on the parent report.

5 out of 5 stars Troubleshoot Access 101.......2006-04-28

Wow what a great idea for a book series!!

I thought I had seen it all, but then when I picked up my first "Annoyances" book I learned there was a whole new niche out there that had yet to be exploited.

For many of us out there, we pick up technical books for a few typical reasons: to learn a new skill or a reference for an existing skill. What about if you already use an application and there is a whole known set of pitfalls and problem areas that you either need to find a workaround for, or you just want to learn about so if the need arises, you know how to deal with these?

Well, enter the "Annoyances" line of books.

'Access Annoyances' by Phil Mitchell is a great companion book for anyone that has a lot of Access books on the shelf or uses Access on a daily basis and needs to read up more on the problems that will be seen at some point. With a layout that takes each problem one at a time, the flow is very good, and the writing style is clear and concise. Unless you are the MOST experienced of Access users/developers, you will be able to pick up something from this book, and it's more likely that you'll pick up a LOT of things.

Some of the O'Reilly prices on books blow me away because they are so low. It's like you are paying x amount and getting xxxxxx in return. If you use Access on a daily basis, you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of 'Access Annoyances' right away.

          ***** HIGHEST POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATION

5 out of 5 stars Should be the second book you buy after a reference manual..........2006-03-16

I consider myself fortunate that I converted my last regularly used database off of Access awhile back. While the software served me well in learning about database systems when I first made the move to PCs, I always found myself fighting with things that should have been easier than they were. Now I find out that it wasn't just me. Phil Mitchell and Evan Callahan have put together a great book titled Fixing Access Annoyances. If you spend any time in Access, this ought to be on your bookshelf.

Contents: Access Basics; General Annoyances; Performance, Versions, Security, and Deployment; Data, Tables, and Database Design; Queries; Forms; Reports, Mailing Labels, and Charts; Expressions, Macros, Code Modules, and Custom Controls; Appendix; Glossary; Index

The Annoyances series is set up in such a way that each chapter covers a series of "questions" posed as to why a particular software package behaves in a certain way. The questions range from minor "why does Access always do x" to "my #$@%@ database is corrupted!", and the conversational tone between the questioner and the authors is fun to read. After reading some of these things, you wonder why *anyone* would use Access! Mitchell and Callahan, although experts in Access, maintain a healthy cynicism towards the product's features and foibles, and all it would take is for you to find three to five annoyances that bug you to no end in order for you to think this is the best money you've spent in a long time. They also try and cover a range of things, from beginner to advanced level gripes, so that you should see value wherever you are in the continuum of Access experience.

If I had this book available to me a year ago, I might still be running my reading log database in Access instead of in Notes. I certainly would have experienced far less frustration than I did. After making sure you have a solid Access reference guide on your shelf, this should be your second purchase on the subject...

          Book Description

"You just spent $100,000 on a college degree to make photocopies. And your manager probably isn't even happy with them.

Life at the entry level isn't about what school you graduated from, or even who you know. It's actually about paying dues and brownnosing and keeping your foot out of your mouth during meetings.

You're Too Smart For This explains everything your college professors didn't:

Understand how college has no application to reality, or anybody living in it.

Come to terms with doing gruntwork and smiling while being yelled at.

Manage your manager, and watch him take credit for your work.

Get straight with operating on a team-putting personal interests second, for once.

Negotiate office politics, and recognize when to keep quiet (e.g., ""the daytime"").

Earn the right promotion or transfer, instead of quitting and being poor again.

The bigger picture, really, is finding a career that you're passionate about-even if it doesn't come with a sexy business card. You won't have time to spend the money, anyway.

But no worries. You're Too Smart For This will help you get the hang of the working life soon enough. And even have some fun with it. Especially at happy hour.

5 out of 5 stars Very easy read. Enjoyable, informative and straight-to-the-point........2006-11-25

Hi! I'm a 25 year old "career freshman" as Ball likes to put it. I first picked up this book after my first corporate contract job ended to figure out what went wrong and why they had to let me go.

The book's layout reminds me of "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff", with 2-3 pages dedicated to each "lie". Each topic has interesting side notes and captions and is really written to an audience that's straight out of college, comparing subjects like the hiring process and HR recruiters to dating and one-night stands. Ball breaks down each topic in simple english and at times it seems more like an older frat brother is giving you advice rather than a career counselor. I actually enjoyed reading this book and was able to get through the whole thing in about a week.

The only downsides I have about this book are that his punchlines become somewhat predictable as you progress through the book and that the online resources seem more like a place to hype up Michael Ball's achievements than as a place to learn and share about getting through your first job. It would also help if there was an interactive online forum, like other books catered to twentysomethings (e.g. Suze Orman's YF&B).

Still, I highly recommend this book to all of you out there who are still lost and confused in the corporate world. Good luck to you all!

          5 out of 5 stars Blunt & Funny.......2006-05-12

You're Too Smart for This is a fast, fun, and refreshingly honest take on what it takes to really survive and thrive as a new corporate "grunt." I was actually a little surprised at how far the author takes some of the humor...but I found myself laughing and nodding in agreement the whole time!

After 4 or 5 years of dry, slow college textbooks, this is the crash course you've been waiting for. You'll be able to use your new knowledge tommorow--and have a much stronger understanding of what's going on around you. Because, as Michael Ball points out, you've only got 90 days now to prove you were worth hiring...

5 out of 5 stars Right On Time!.......2006-05-11

It's funny how things come to you just when you need them... After joining a mid-sized Internet company straight out of school, I found myself doing OK with my actual work, but making a lot of interpersonal mistakes I didn't see coming. For instance, after my manager denied a project request--one that I really wanted--I decided to go talk to some other people about getting on the team. In school, this always worked for me.

But in the office, I painfully found out, this is a huge mistake! And just one of many that Michael Ball expertly--and very entertainingly--illustrates and cautions against. What I appreciated most about You're Too Smart for This was that the author is "on the level" with you--he doesn't pull any punches, and talks to you like a big brother might. One you actually like, that is ;)

The structure of the book--the "lies"--make it an easy and fun read the first time around, but also ensure that you can quickly pick it back up later on as a reference guide for whatever situation you're in (e.g., promotions, quitting, etc.).

Do yourself a big favor and check out this book--even if you think you already know the rules. I can practically guarantee you'll learn some valuable new insights. Plus have a great laugh while you're at it!

5 out of 5 stars Quotes Alone are Worth It!.......2006-05-11

You're Too Smart for This, to me, encapsulated exactly what I'm experiencing as a relatively new accountant at Ernst & Young. All of the day-to-day BS I found myself struggling with, Michael Ball shines a light on, and really talks you through.

But I have to admit, one of my favorite parts of this book is all of the quotes and sidebars! There's got to be well over 200--from everyone from Aristotle to Peter Drucker to Bill Gates to Jeff Gordon to Sharon Stone. Plus the author gives his own little sarcastic twist in the attribution, which I found to be a great addition.

The callout boxes, in fact, are full of really solid research--pulled from sources such as the US Census Bureau, Harvard Business Review, New York Times, Fast Company, Monster.com, and countless others.

The book, in total, is really a compendium of all the entry level wisdom that's out there. And then some. If you've just stepped into Corporate America, don't take another step without this book!

5 out of 5 stars Ball Breaks it Down.......2006-05-11

What I found most valuable in this book--besides the sheer entertainment value--was how the author takes what are typically confusing and hush-hush topics (e.g., managing your manager, dealing with difficult coworkers, getting a good promotion, finding a work/life balance), and gets at the root of the issue.

It's not a prescriptive as some other books, maybe; there's no "Step 1, Step 2" stuff in there. But what Michael Ball does is give you the principles behind all the big issues... Sort of the tool box, and then you go build it however it works for you.

If you're looking for the truth behind the curtain, this is definitely your book.
