Since receiving this book, I have read, studied, and put to use the reasonings contained within it's covers. (I have to say, some of the readings that I have gotten are totally mind boggling.) The charts, descriptions, and explanations are fascinating and uncannily accurate. I have only begun to appreciate this ages old method of divination. This book is written so anyone can understand the mechanics and the possibilities of I Ching. It is an intense writing that lends itself well to any reader's ability.

Having had my own "I Ching Workbook" for many years, I recently bought two more for my twin daughters, now adults. The ancient wisdom in the workbook is timely for all ages and easily understood due to the simple and precise instructions that can be understood by all.

I don't believe that all of these people giving such rave reviews of this book have really used it for long. I also would tend to rate it very highly, except that there is a glaring typo, like the entire description, of hexagram #15. I used to have a copy of this book, and used it, and for the most part loved it, but I find it difficult to believe that an author of any integrity would not have done a revision by now, and corrected the error. If that was done, I would happily buy and use another copy of this book

When I was 19 I was introduced to the I ching. It came in the form of this workbook and almost 10 years later I now still use it as my primary tool and reference.I have since become a follower of Lao Tzu and his teachings. Having read countless interpretations of the actual book of changes when it comes down to actually using the oracle this is the best one.I've also tried 6 other "oracle" books but none come close to this.If u never thought of doing anything close to the I ching then this book is suitable. If you haven't already used this book as a Lao Tzu reader then whereve u been?

More than just a translation, Richard Wilhelm's I Ching is a profound introduction to the Chinese world-view. The I Ching (Yi Jing) is recognized by both Confucians and Taoists as a foundational work, and Wilhelm shows why. He separates his work into three books. The first book is about the hexagrams--the meanings of the lines and Wilhelm's extensive comments. The second presents two early commentaries that interpret the wisdom of the divinatory text, also with Wilhelm's helpful notes. And the third book takes us back to the hexagrams for more detailed commentary from both ancient Chinese thinkers and Wilhelm. Wilhelm is able to offer such enormous assistance because he spent the better part of a decade in China studying under classically trained scholars. His love for the work is thus as broad as his understanding.

The I Ching was originally used for divination, kind of like palm reading or interpreting the stars. It differs from simple prognostication, however, in that it demands us, as diviners, to cultivate an understanding of the world and ourselves. Without this understanding, the text is useless, hence the value of the commentaries, particularly Wilhelm's. This version is not without its biases, of course--it is a European's understanding of the I Ching, through a late-Qing dynasty Confucian perspective, translated into English by a Jungian psychoanalyst. Nonetheless, it succeeds like no other. --Brian Bruya

Book Description

The I Ching, or Book of Changes, a common source for both Confucianist and Taoist philosophy, is one of the first efforts of the human mind to place itself within the universe. It has exerted a living influence in China for 3,000 years, and interest in it has been rapidly spreading in the West.

Dependably delivers divine insights for the mortally bound. Once you master the simple way of accessing and apply the I Ching you will be surprised to find that it delivers much greater spiritual insights with less effort than other approaches -- daily Bible banging for instance -- and does it directly in context with your need(s).

5 out of 5 stars More than just wisdom & divination..........2007-07-23

This I Ching is an essential tool of those seeking 'God' - in eclectic form. The I Ching orders one's life... so that God may speak back to you (2-way prayer, if you will)... and to send you on a life-long journey.
Or you can just dabble.

For those coming from a scientific or agnostic skeptiszm, this book allows you to prove for yourself the emperical existance of God. Even for the scientific atheist. Really!
How?
With constant use of the I Ching an obvious question results -"Who's messing around with the coins... these things are supposed to be coming out randomly?". And you might you suppose to just whom the 'Who's" refers.

One sees that the very act of random throwing coins begins to defy probability theory. Hexagrams are received just too strikingly close to reality and certainly not randomly distributed...and I taught college level statistics and experimental methods. In my lifetime I have probably "cast the coins" upwards of 300,000 times... bit i am very old.

Record the time, date and circumstance of each throw with a graded value (1 - 10) of how close to your reality the reading relates. The resulting scattergram will astound you... into accepting that there is more to this thing than meets even the 'inner eye'. You are in touch with something that sees right through you to your inner most thoughts. And then can proceed to "arrange your everyday world".
Godspeed my felow travellers.
Godspeed.

This book contains wisdom, which is a rare quality. It may not be what some people call "accessible," but learning to access it will improve you. I've been holding a dialogue with the oracle since the late '70s; my understanding has grown in that time, but it may be that I have more to learn yet. This particular translation to me shows the signs of subtle genius, never mind that it's Chinese to German to English -- Wilhelm and Baynes knew what they were doing. If you're going to get a copy of the oracle, get this one. If you get a different one, still get this one, so you can compare them. I regard this translation as authoritative.

Book Description

Used by its readers as an oracle, this book, based on the terminology used in the classic Wilhelm/Baynes translation, puts the I Ching into modern language. This allows its wisdom to be applied to the situations of everyday life. Decoded are words such as "the superior man," the "inferior man," "the inferiors," and the "faithful followers," which refer respectively to the true self, the ego, the bodily self, and aspects of character such as patience and perseverance. Expressions such as "crossing the great water," and "seeing the great man," are seen to mean getting past the danger of giving up on oneself, and remembering the potential for good in every person. Understanding such words and phrases occurs in the context of the entire wisdom of the I Ching which counsels those who consult it to follow their innermost feelings, as these bring one into harmony with the ever-loving Cosmos and its protective powers. Judging by the more than 4000 letters written by its readers, this book has been used by adults from all occupations and beliefs as a self-help spiritual guide and educator of the truths of life.

This book is amazing and has helped me to understand the passages of the I-Ching. Everything within the book has provided me with practical approaches to mundane/spiritual issues. It also has peaked my interest in purchasing yarrow sticks and the Wilheim book that Ms. Anthony sites as helpful to her own studies.
Again, this book will prove helpful in learning more about I-Ching (this is my first book on it)and furthering the ongoing spiritual journey.

I never give top billing to anything - there is always room for improvement. That being said, this is a great guide to the sometimes confusing realm of the I Ching. Clear spiritual insight, coupled with current understandable language makes this an essential companion to whatever other volume one uses to connect with the Power of the Universe. Let it be!

The most prominent idea I came away with from reading this version of the I Ching is 'not to give up on anyone'; remain open minded and accepting. One never knows when, but that the good will happen is reassuring.

5 out of 5 stars An easier I Ching.......2006-03-20

This is a great version of the I Ching! Carol Anthony takes the sometimes difficult to understand messages of the I Ching and turns them into plain english. Very good for beginners, or for anyone who wishes to get the full message of the I Ching without doing all the interpretation.

5 out of 5 stars I-Ching is KING.......2005-03-20

I have been consulting the sage, through this book for 7 years and have sporatically used other texts in addition. This text wipes them all out. It is well written and makes sense.
It's ideas and terms have become apart of my everyday thinking and I am totally happy with it. The sage has rebuffed me many times when ignoring it's friendly advice and this book helps me to understand why.
I have studied Buddhism just as long and though I am not a big fan of TAOIST beliefs- I do whole hardedly believe in Wu Wei as a way of living my life. After all these years I sometimes barely need to consult the book cuz I can imagine what the sage would say and I try to act accordingly, however hard it may be.
The I-Ching is not for prediciting events exactly but can give a vague idea how you are doing on your path. I read this book and have no questions as to what the author is trying to put across. I sometimes think she IS the I-Ching!

Book Description

This I Ching was written under the guidance of the Sage that speaks through the I Ching oracle. It shows the Cosmos as a system of harmony, the principles of which are clearly described in its 64 hexagrams.

The purpose of consulting the oracle is to inquire, before an undertaking, whether you are in harmony with the Cosmic Way. When this is confirmed by the words "success," or "good fortune," whatever you do will be supported by the invisible helping forces of the Cosmos. When your attitude is discordant, the oracle predicts "misfortune," meaning that these helping forces will not support what you do. The answers of the oracle are not to be taken as fortune-telling, but as reflecting the cosmic consequences of your attitude toward your goal.

All counsel given by the I Ching is directed toward helping you return to harmony with the Cosmos. To do this you are being given a deeper understanding of the principles of Cosmic Harmony that are involved in the issue at hand. In the light of these principles you will be able to recognize particular mistaken ideas that are the cause of your discord, or misfortune. This book is the first I Ching oracle that shows you how to deprogram the obstructing ideas, and thus reunite with the Cosmic Harmony.

Also presented in this book is an innovative method of communicating directly with the Sage that speaks through the I Ching. This method allows you to clarify its message until it assures you that you have reached an adequate understanding. Regularly consulting the I Ching in this way leads to clarifying insights into your life's purpose, and to a pronounced increase in your own creativity. It was through this method, in combination with meditations and dreams, that the Sage gave the authors the completely new perspective on the nature of the Cosmos, human nature, and the place of humans within the Cosmic Whole described here. Rather than presenting you with fixed answers to every problem, this book allows the Cosmic Teacher called "the Sage" to show you your own path to insight and inner guidance.

5 out of 5 stars Holy Moly, A New I Ching.......2007-02-23

Saturday, my daughter, Sasha Wittmann, LMP, wanted help making a decision about leaving her current work, which has depleted her energies and her joy, stressed her to the limit, and doesn't pay well enough.

Should she take a job she likes with the university with the possibility of either ending in two months because of funding or continuing for years? While in the new part-time position, she would continue taking steps towards a fully supporting massage practice.

She felt fear. If this new job ended in two or three months, how would she pay the mortgage, etc.? She wanted security. Which to choose - stay in hell or take the worrisome risk?

Do you ever wish you could get a clear answer to a tough decision? Of course you do. Your life as a human requires you to make tough decisions always with insufficient information it seems. Wouldn't it be great if you could just ask the core wisdom of the cosmos what to do?

Can you imagine the comfort of knowing what to do? Further, can you imagine trusting that your decision aligned with the best interests of the entire cosmos?

Carol Anthony and Hanna Moog address this core wisdom as the Sage in their wonderful new version of the I Ching -- I Ching, The Oracle of the Cosmic Way.

I love this ancient oracle, the I Ching. Over three decades ago, my beloved Suzanne introduced me to the Wilhelm version with the famous introduction by none other than Carl Jung. The Wilhelm version introduced me to Jung as well. Now, I hobnob with Jungians therapists. Who would have guessed?

Small suggestions lead to large life changes, yes.

You want to know what the I Ching is and what it can do for you, right?

The oldest written version of the I Ching dates to about 1000 BCE making it the most ancient written oracle you can have.

The subtitle of this new book declares the books deeper truth - this is the oracle of the Cosmic Way.

Other versions have translated the I Ching as the book of changes. Anthony and Moog make a distinction between change, which tends to be temporary, outer, and ego based vs. transformation, which is permanent, inner, and soul based.

This distinction alone would be enough for me to recommend the book. But as they say on late night infomercials, "Wait! There's more!"

Over the centuries, the I Ching has suffered from writers placing their own spin on the cosmic oracle. The worst offenders have been the Confucians. They see the world as a moral struggle against the evil animal nature of man. So the I Ching gets translated and interpreted from their moralistic viewpoint.

The Taoists, on the other hand, view the world as good and that man's animal nature is innocent. The problem you have arises when the ego - the grasping competitive mind -- attempts to subjugate the innocent nature.

Jimmy Carter's excellent but troubling book, Our Endangered Values: America's Moral Crisis, points to the same thing. Fundamentalism as practiced by the Christian right, the Islamic right, and others, suppresses women and fresh ideas. It concentrates power into the hands of a very few men - feudalism in a word.

The ladies have weeded out the feudal Confucian claptrap that interpenetrates every other version I have perused. They leave you with clarity and freedom. You can now have a very personal conversation between you, the authors, and the Sage. This is good. Yippee.

This is a reference book - you want to own this one, you can buy it here.

Oh, and what about Sasha? She made her own decision with out the assistance of me or the Sage. She's taking the risk.

5 out of 5 stars Complex subject made understandable.......2007-01-06

Carol Anthony has spent most of her life as a student/teacher of the I-Ching. Her ability to share in understandable language the many layers of this most complex and subtle way of being is fully illustrated in this volume. As an American I have struggled with seeing the inner and outer world from the perspective of an ancient culture steeped in seeing Life force in everything. Carol Anthony's body of work on this subject has supported my learning tremendously. I highly recommend any of her books on this subject.

5 out of 5 stars If you hold these truths to be self-evident..........2006-12-12

The criticisms of the Oracle of the Cosmic Way expressed in reviews here unquestionably have validity. However, it may be wise to exercise caution in basing on these criticisms one's decision of whether to engage this version of the I Ching. The I Ching and the Sage are one being. The Sage will speak to each of us according to our understanding and desire to learn. It is the Sage who should ultimately guide any decision about the version of the I Ching with which to work in a process of serious study. Turn within and consult that ultimate Oracle for best guidance.

The Oracle of the Cosmic Way is a unique expression of the Sage that will speak profoundly to some students. If you hold these truths to be self-evident you may be one of those students:

1. There are two basic realities with which we must come to terms, that of the actual reality of the cosmic harmonies, and that of the parallel reality of the ego, which is not real at all but is the world most people at the current time operate in and out of. The I Ching guides us to relate effectively with both realities.

2. We are always connected with the cosmic harmonies through the aligned perception of our inner and outer senses, and through our inner truth which also connects us to the inner truth in each person. We need only to clear away the debris of the ego in our mind to allow that which always is to be.

3. The ego has become our mind through a programming process that took place in our childhoods. Its program is designed to be extremely difficult to permanently remove, but this difficulty is only from the perspective of the ego. The ego operates through the misuse of the word by human beings. This misuse, which is inevitable when one acts in and out of the parallel reality, can take the form of projections, spells, and poison arrows. The interaction of the ego with itself through all those engaged in the parallel reality nourishes it with their chi energy and perpetuates its illusion of existence.

4. The ego's tyranny can be stopped at any time, in any situation, by saying the "Inner No" to it. This engages the Helpers, manifestations of the cosmic harmonies, who are unlimited in number and each of whom will perform a particular function to dissolve the parallel reality operating in any situation for the person who calls upon them. They withdraw and wait unless and until called upon. That withdrawal is known as a "fate," and will end when it has run its allotted course, or when the person experiencing the fate has corrected the false seed phrases (misuse of the word through core phrases programmed into the unconscious) which caused the Helpers to withdraw.

In the Oracle of the Cosmic Way the Sage addresses, in a language that some students will find clear and profound, these truths and many others that are interwoven with them. It dismantles the edifice of ego that has over millennia become superimposed on the Sage's original transmission as the I Ching. It is completely worthwhile if one resonates to the truths it addresses and the language it uses. Find a copy, articulate a question living in your heart, open the book and see what happens!

2 out of 5 stars Beware .......2006-06-18

This text gives us a new way of throwing the I Ching to get much more specific answers. Problem is, one of the great strengths of the I Ching is that is stays on the mythic realm of archetype and imagistic poetry from which one interprets one's answer. Once you try to ground that into the specifics of the mundane, you get into trouble. I tried using their technique and wound up getting very frightening predictions of impending, fatal events that (now years later) I can say with confidence didn't happen. The beauty of the I Ching is that it offers us a poetic archetype of where we are, that we then interpret. The more you remove the poetry, and the interpretation, the more you remove the spirit of the original. I agree with previous reviewer who said, there's wisdom here, but it's not the I Ching.

for me right now. And has been for the last 8 years. I refer to others sometimes (whether Cleary, or the Kuan Yin versions, LeGuin's is fun, Wing's workbook amazing, and the seminal but difficult to interpret translation by Legge). And have been intrigued by Karcher's when I've browsed in the bookstore, also recommended by one of my teachers.

This one always speaks to me when I consult it, or simply study it. And the introduction to chinese cosmology in the first section is so well written and an excellent introduction for beginners.

I'd recommend that beginners browse through the many books offered out there. This one came highly reommended by my teachers, and I continue to use it. Find one (or preferably several) that speak to "you". We all have our own path in the Tao to follow, pick your guide with your teacher or you own intuition.

This book was inspiring, yet very short. I found that this title isn't one of Nhat Hanh's better books...but if it's your first time with one of his titles than I would recommend it.

What are the most widely read and commented upon works in history? The Bible? The Vedas? The Quran? How about the I Ching? Every major thinker in Chinese history has had something to say about it. Passed down from generation to generation, it has been admired, studied, and put into practice. In 1973, archaeologists unearthed a number of silk manuscripts dating back to 168 B.C. Included in the find was a version of the I Ching and four commentaries previously lost. The text itself differed in places from the accepted version, especially in the arrangement of the hexagrams. Scholar Edward Shaughnessy has translated the entire text, along with the four commentaries and an additional commentary (the Appended Statements) that traditionally accompanies the text. The newly discovered commentaries offer a variety of interesting opinions, one of which appears to be Taoist, while another has Confucius explaining what the I Ching means to him. Shaughnessy includes the Chinese text of both the received version and the excavated version, although, unfortunately, the notes are buried in the back, making it difficult to follow the subtle differences. --Brian Bruya

Book Description

For more than two thousand years, the oracular, enigmatic pronouncements of the I Ching (Classic of Changes) have intrigued and inspired readers. In the West, scholars have long regarded the volume as one of the seminal texts of Chinese culture, comparable to the Bible or the Upanishads, and readers everywhere have turned to the hexagrams, line statements, and commentaries for guidance on every imaginable life situation.

Given the enduring importance of this work, it was a momentous event when a significantly different I Ching text was unearthed in Mawangdui, China, in 1973--the first new manuscript of the work to appear in two thousand years. Now translated into English for the first time by one of West's leading scholars of the I Ching, the Mawangdui text brings welcome clarity, accessibility, and novelty to this beloved classic.

Like the received version, the Mawangdui I Ching and its commentaries begin with a central core of sixty-four hexagrams, but in an important departure, the hexagrams in the newly discovered text are arranged in a systematic and logical way and, in many cases, are assigned different names. The line statements that accompany the hexagrams frequently differ from the received text. In addition, the Mawangdui version contains five new commentaries that had been lost for more than two thousand years, including the surprising discovery of a commentary that quotes Confucius extensively on how he had come to change his earlier, negative, views about the importance of the I Ching.

The new material, the logical arrangement of the hexagrams, the more Taoist tone of the "Appended Judgments", the illuminating introduction and notes by Edward L. Shaughnessy and, above all, the lucid purity of his translation, make the Mawangdui I Ching a treasure. Readers who wish to use the hexagrams for divination will find this version more intriguing than even the previous text; scholars will derive new insights from the Mawangdui commentaries and from the "Appended Judgments," one of the most sophisticated and subtle essays in all of Chinese philosophy; admirers of world literature will cherish this volume as a work of timeless artistry.

5 out of 5 stars A scholarly work not a popular text.......2004-03-28

A lot has happened in Chinese language scholarship in recent decades. (Would that I had more than a poor layman's appreciation of such endeavors!) Obvious are the changes in the transliterations into English. Gone is "Tao te Ching" for the now correct "Dao De Ching." (How I loved those t's pronounced like d's and their exotic appearance in print, now reduced to quaint nostalgia.)

Also changed is the I Ching, now properly known as Yijing, the "Classic of Changes" (formerly the "Book of Changes"). Note however that the publishers of this very fine volume have insisted on "I Ching" being in the title lest the uninitiated not realize that this book is about that enormously popular work of divination now at least 3,000 years old. As such the Yijing is one of the most venerable of all human writings and is of inestimable value for that reason alone.

The occasion for this book and for Professor Shaughnessy's translation and commentary is the discovery in 1973 of the Mawangdui manuscript which shed new light on the text of the Yijing. That manuscript dates from the second century B.C. However the original of the Yijing goes back to the days before works were written down. Ni, Hua Ching in his book The Book of Changes and the Unchanging Truth (1983) notes that "an ancient by the name of Fu Shi developed a line system to express the principle of appropriateness." Some time later around 1181 B.C. "the feudal lord, King Wen of the Shang Dynasty...provided a written explanation of these lines and hexagrams." (p. iii in the work cited)

Note well the use of the word "appropriateness." Although the Yijing is known primarily in the West as a book of divination, it is really a book about how one should behave and what one should expect in the face of the inevitable changes that dominate our lives. It is therefore in one sense a book of advice, advice to the high and the low, but especially to heads of state. It might be contrasted and compared to the Dao De Ching and to various volumes of advice from Sun Tzu's The Art of Warfare to Machiavelli's The Prince.

This particular book is not a popular work on the classic. Instead it is a meticulous scholar's work that presents the new textual discovery to the reader with both the Chinese characters and Shaughnessy's translation appearing on facing pages, noting omissions and puzzlements in the manuscript, etc. His commentary addresses the origins and development of the Yijing including the earlier commentaries by Confucius and others. This is a book for scholars and the most devoted students of the Yijing as well as Chinese history and culture.

I should also note that this is not a book about how to use the Yijing for fortune telling. There are many books that work well for that purpose including James Legge's I Ching: Book of Changes from 1964, which I have used. I might also mention Edward Albertson's I Ching for the Millions first published in 1969. One of the most respected books widely available is The I Ching or Book of Changes by C.F. Baynes and R. Wilhelm which was also first published in the sixties. Today no doubt there is an I Ching for "Dummies" or an "Idiots" guide that will work well for divination.

4 out of 5 stars A good translation of the Ma Wang Dui I Ching.......1999-10-19

If you're interested in a translation of the MWD-text, and a comparison with the traditional received text, then you will like this book. From a sinological point of view it is interesting material, however, the book isn't written for diviners. It has no explanations of the symbols of the I Ching, not of the trigrams nor of the text. Shaughnessy told me he has never used the I Ching himself, but is purely interested in the old text and history of the book. And this translation shows this interest well.

1 out of 5 stars misunderstanding of chinese phylosophy and Yi.......1999-08-31

The original Yi has three pictures or drawings but no words of any language. Yi is a universal or world phylosophy not a chinese one. Since it is first discovered and heavily explained by the accent chinese scholars,so Yi has been mistaken as chinese phylosophy.

Yi addresses basic universe knowlege and is far beyond modern sciences and west phylosophy achievements in thought, but it has been misunderstood and ignored for thousands of years!

The world will finally meet under the Yi thought and realize Yi's value.

4 out of 5 stars An ideal book On I Ching........2006-02-16

I have bought several books on I Ching and this one is one of the most interesting books I have purchased. The book is larger than most books, about an A3 size but short on text than most books, less than a page for each hexagram.(a bit too light on for text).Written in simple English makes this book an advantage. The illustations throughout add to the character of the book. This book will please a lot of people.Didnt have this book for long because I needed more indepth books.

If you are looking for books on I Ching that go in depth and in great detail you might want to consider other books like those written by author Stephen Karcher,Kim-Anh Lim,Sam Reifler, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Best I Ching available.......2003-10-22

Some of the longer reviews will tell you how this I Ching integrates relevant art work with practical advice. I just wanted to second all the positive reviews here in saying that from looking at many I Ching books, this is the only one that really clicked with me. The art work is beautiful and the text is very illuminating. 5 +++ stars!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Interpretations for Abstract and Visual Thinkers.......2003-01-06

this is the best version of the I Ching out: each hexagram is accompanied by a relevant piece of traditional Chinese painting that helps the intuitive understanding of the message the hexagram intends to convey. Lively text translation that interprets the hexagrams on the four planes of existence: spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical aids in the interpretation of the hexagrams' messages as related to the areas the question might address. The tone is psycho-spiritual-social but written in everyday terms.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book.......2002-03-06

I own both this one and the I Ching Workbook and they are practically the same book, though this one doesn't have the spiral binding (which you'll need because you'll open it so much) but has the most beautiful, meditative paintings on each hexagram. The pictures give you a profound inner sense of the truth of each throw of the coins, transforming the experience into a deeply effective tool for inner growth. Not to be confused with the Art of War or the Tao Te Ching, the I Ching focuses mainly on political relationships and the development of character as one navigates one's way through professional and personal relationships. The main thing you'll get from using the I Ching is, to learn which situations you can definitely change and which ones you should just let pass. It also shows you where you are in the development of goals and what to prepare yourself for, as you go on. Start with one question, and when you read the answer, if you have deeper questions, ask them too. You'll get amazing answers.

5 out of 5 stars If you have to read reviews on the I-Ching.......2001-04-08

If you have to read reviews about I-Ching books this is the first book you need to buy. The study of the I Ching begins with practice by consulting the oracle not with immediate attempts at understanding-especially for the Western mind. This version of the I Ching is the easisest way to make that first step. You read a few paragraphs on instructions to throw three pennies and begin an adventure that can last from a few minutes to a lifetime. Despite its ease of use, this book is a complete work unto itself shold you choose to go deeper. It has ample references to history and more subtle interpretations. A glimpse of Western understanding may be obtained by reading Carl Jung's foreword in the Baynes/Wilhelm interpretation.

It is accurate, and it completes spiritually and practically each one involved in the I Ching system.

5 out of 5 stars The Medical I Ching: Oracle of the Healer Within.......2003-07-10

While I agree with the previous reviewer that this book is gonna be hard to use by someone who knows little or nothing about Chinese medicine, as a professional practitioner of Chinese medicine, I and my many patients have found this book invaluable for helping to clarify otherwise hazy situations. The I Ching needs to be interpreted no matter what use it is put to. So you have to contemplate the hexagrams and moving lines from several points of view: trigrams, yin and yang lines, map of the body, image, and commentary. For me, this book provides a new and different starting place to think about my patients' problems. It is not a simple cook book for "looking up" precise medical diagnoses and what to do for them. Personally, I don't think the previous reviewer has really hung out with this book or the I Ching in general. I would certainly recommend it to anyone interested in learning how to interpret the I Ching from a medical point of view.

3 out of 5 stars A great idea--too superficial.......2001-09-24

Interpretations of the I Ching have been used for many a purpose, and medicine is a very interesting and somewhat obvious application. The author is convincing that he knows his topic, however, I suspect he isn't revealing his depth of knowledge in this book. As a licensed practitioner of Chinese Medicine, I found the book to be accurate in Chinese terms, but far too limited and superficial. The language of Chinese Medicine is used here, and will be difficult for a layperson to understand unless they have done a fair bit of reading on the subject prior. The translation of Chinese Medical conditions into Western terms invariably proves inaccurate. The book is great idea from someone who I'm certain understands the topic, but somehow it doesn't really succeed.

Book Description

The highly regarded translation that honors the authentic Chinese spirit of the Book of Changes

• Places new emphasis on the intricate web of interrelations among the names and sequence of the sixty-four hexagrams

• Includes historical information on the events out of which the I Ching was born

• Introduces several new methods of divination

For more than 3,000 years the I Ching has been the most important book of divination in the world. Revered by billions of Chinese as the Classic of Classics and consulted as a source of ancient wisdom, it has been embraced by the West in the last 50 years but has always been translated by Westerners who brought their own cultural biases to the work, distorting or misunderstanding its true meaning.

In The Complete I Ching Master Alfred Huang has restored the true essence of the I Ching by emphasizing the unity of Heaven and humanity and the Tao of Change, and, even more important, by including translations of the Ten Wings, the commentaries by Confucius, that are essential to the I Ching’s insights. Previous English translations have either given these commentaries a minor place in the book or have left them out altogether. But the Chinese say that the I Ching needs the Ten Wings to fly. Restored to their central place in the book by Master Huang, the I Ching at last flies in English.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Alfred Huang's Complete I Ching.......2007-09-04

Alfred Huang is a tai chi master and Taoist professor living on the Island of Maui, Hawai'i. His two books (The Complete I Ching: The Definitive Translation by the Taoist Master Alfred Huang published by Inner Traditions and Complete Tai-Chi: The Definitive Guide to Physical & Emotional Self-Improvement published by Charles E. Tuttle) are both scholarly works. The approach taken by Master Huang's translation of the I Ching ("yijing" in the currently accepted romanization of Chinese called pinyin) is different from the Wilhelm-inspired tradition. Most such books, following the Wilhelm template, have provided interpretation as part of their translation. The Chinese text of the I Ching is even more imagery oriented -- more inscrutable, to some -- than most such translations tolerate. The strength of that imagery is its ability to inspire personal insights. Master Huang's book presents a careful transposition of Chinese images of the I Ching into English, with as little elaboration as possible. He then provides his own separate interpretative ideas and comments, but the text of King Wen and the Duke of Zhou are rendered as closely as possible to the original Chinese metaphors. Huang's book also introduces more detail regarding the nature of the names of the gua (3-line trigrams or 6-line hexagrams), implications of their ideographs, and nuances of their meaning. It is a scholarly, ground-breaking work that should capture the interest of Western readers. Additionally, Huang has introduced the concept of the Tao of I that is inherent, although not expressed directly, in the I Ching. He also explains how the sequence of the gua is not random but has coherence, representing a recurrent cycle. Huang explains how the I Ching describes the unity of Heaven and Humanity and further explains in some detail how specific aspects of each gua are associated with his interpretation of the history of King Wen and the Zhou Dynasty. The Complete I Ching is a carefully researched and meticulously translated rendering of the original Chinese text that should be appreciated for the accuracy of its metaphorical imagery.

5 out of 5 stars The I Ching.......2007-07-06

The Complete I Ching is the most comprehensive I ching book on the market. Huang's explanations are detailed and easy to understand. I would encourge any one interested in the I Ching to buy this book.

3 out of 5 stars An Interesting Alternative.......2007-07-03

I used the Wilhelm translation for years until the book got so beat up that I had to trash it. This is an interesting alternative, but I still prefer Wilhelm. There's too much space devoted here to analyzing the the structure of the hexagram. And the different sources of material that are integrated into the text are put together in a somewhat confusing way. In general, it's a nice alternative, but I'd still go to Wilhelm first. I think most people will find Wilhelm more accessible.

One thing you discover if you compare translations is that the original text can mean MANY things. That's part of the beauty of this book.

2 out of 5 stars Watered-out.......2007-02-03

I started out with John Blofield's translation of the I Ching in 1979, but soon discovered the superiority of the Wilhelm/Baynes translation. I also acquired the 18th century James Legge translation. Since then I have added about ten other editions to my library, before making my own private translation a few years ago, checking out the Chinese wording by means of a dictionary and pondering on the reasons for the way the text has been variously translated. So satisfying was this little exercise in terms of establishing an individual understanding of the metaphoric guidance of this suggestive oracle, I have hardly even opened the last I Ching bought on Amazon, the intriguing but not very accessible one by Rudolf Ritsema...

As for the present title, I can only say it is almost as bad as the pretty derailed "poetic" interpretation by Kerson Huang from 1987! The rave reviews of this feeble and watered-out version only goes to show how the transmission of knowledge of the good seems to get blotted out every now and then, so that history may repeat itself with everyone groping for the way anew. As for the "official" review, printed on the book and restated above, about its superiority 'in almost every respect' to the older ones, I can only say: it is rather the other way around. It is inferior in almost every respect. At least compared with Richard Wilhelm's work, it does not stand a chance. It also lacks quite a bit of canonical material found in Wilhelm.

This so-called master says in the foreword he felt depressed by the Western translations upon arriving in the United States. As he freely admits to having had extensive help in polishing his English, I am not so sure he really got his reading of the "Western" versions right to begin with!

As I glanced at a few hexagrams before realizing this work represented a pretty shallow understanding of the material, I immediately noticed that it is rather the "master" himself who seems to be guilty of depressing readings of the original, for instance the last sentence of the commentary on the judgement to chapter 3, "Difficulty in the Beginning". Whereas the Wilhelm translation stresses the work to be done in a time of initial uncertainty, Huang actually says the work may, possibly, be of no avail! So who's reading is the more depressing?

Also, by leaving out the part about "difficulty" from the hexagram title, Huang actually weakens the meaning of this hexagram as it speaks of the problems this blade of grass (the little person) has in breaking through the soil to reach any standing in the external world, making his inconsistency all the more glaring.

So, as at least one other wide-awake reviewer has correctly noticed, this was just hype and not at all the best beginner's I Ching on the market, to say nothing about its claim of being the complete edition. The hardbound book looked nice though, if that is what you want for your bookshelf.

As a beginner's I Ching it is decent, you get familiarized with the hexagrams and so is worthy of 2 stars out of 5 (meaning "acceptable" but not really that good). But why would anyone want this volume, compared with Richard Wilhelm's German work so carefully rendered in English by Cary Baynes, Carl Jung's official translator?

This was just a "new translation" for the sake of bringing something new to the market, and so reminds me of Henry Wei's effort of the late 80s. That one was at least not falsely titled "complete" but restricted itself to the claim of being "the authentic" version. It came and went and did really nothing to advance the state of things since Whincup's altogether too literalistic translation made the most noise at that time.

5 out of 5 stars This really is the definitive translation.......2006-06-09

Addressing one of the reviewers who says that people love this book just because he is a non-Westerner -- that is not the case with this book. The author, Alfred Huang, is clearly able to bridge the Chinese *culture* with that of the Western culture, which is essential if you're going to use this book for advice and get anything meaningful out of it.

There was another reviewer who mentioned a pre-Confucian version of the I-Ching. I'm now curious, and will explore this. It should be noted though, that Dr. Yun-Lan Fung wrote in A Short History of Chinese Philosphy (1948) that Confucius was a conservative. He apparently descended from the Shang dynasty royals, and was upholding the traditions already made old in his times. How much of this was Dr. Fung's political spin, or even Confucius's political spin, I do not know.

The important thing is that Alfred Huang brings the Western reader into the ancient Chinese culture, thus making the advice rendered from the I-Ching effective.
