The romantic horror genre reaches a new level of complexity in this novel, which manages to be simultaneously thought-provoking and blood-curdling. Kerry becomes the unwitting accomplice of an attractive, mysterious boy on the run, only to discover that he is a vampire. Can she trust her feelings for someone so alien to her? Or has she been "seduced by the glamour of evil"? An ALA Best Book for Young Adults, this was called "a tingly thriller" by Horn Book
Book Description
Kerry's got a tough night ahead of her.
What begins as a simple lost-and-found trip to the Laundromat turns into a nightmarish odyssey of murder, vampires, and--quite possibly--true love. Vivian Vande Velde puts a terrifying spin on what should be a typical night in a small town.

I loved it........2007-09-30
I'd have to say this is either a love it or hate it book.
Some people find it dull, and the charatures one dimensional but I, and many would have to disagree.
When I fist rented this book from the library I sat it down on my dresser, deciding to read it if I got bored enough. So, desion made I picked up the book and failed to put it down until I was finished ever last word- literally!
A day later I picked up the book again, and even though I knew everything that was going on and how it would end, the second time reading it I was still intrigued, and the third time.
The book I found was fast paced and a real page turner.
Sometime in the book you long to travel with Ethan as Kerry had.
I've been wanting to buy the book ever since those three times reading it.
I think the author did a great job with this one and as a vampire fiction fan, I would have to say two thumbs up!
=)
Interesting...and depressing.......2007-09-04
When I saw this book for the first time on Amazon.com I was like "Wow! I MUST read this!" but my enthusiasm was wasted because this book, while good, was not what I would call jumping-up-and-down worthy. The story was interesting enough, but not developted as much as it could, or should, have been. Ethan (or whatever his real name was)seemed much less mysterious to me, and much more like an annoying pathological liar. Reviewers said he reminded them of Edward Cullen from Twilight, but I saw almost no similarities other than the fact that they both were great looking vampires. His personality wasn't just flawed, it was broken and obnoxious at times. Granted, I still loved him, but I can't deny that he is a horrible leading man.
The leading lady, I found dull and flat. The author obviously tried to catch the teenage mind on paper, but I think she failed. It was a nice attempt and all, but still Kerry seemed flat and one demensional even though she was constantly pondering, worrying, and fawning. Even with her mixed emotions, there was truly no depth to her personality.
I thought her decision in the end was the only thing that showed her true character, and still, STILL, she seemed to be a cliched piece of teenage literature. Maybe I felt this way because I think she made the wrong decision, or maybe it's because I know that I would have made a very differnt decision. I don't know.
The story was fun to read, and mildly entertaining, and of course it was fun to try and decipher Ethan, but it's not what I would call great. I was disappointed with it, but that doesn't mean anyone else should be. It was a decent story, with some interesting characters, and an interesting twist at the end. I've reread it, told my freinds to try it, and recomended it to my local library because it has the potential to be wonderful for someone. Read it, it could make you smile. :)
Terrible!.......2007-08-07
This is by far the worst book I have ever experienced. The characters were flat, the plot was almost nonexistent, and overall, there was nothing to recommend this book to a reader. The book had no element or romance, action, or fantasy. It was just 175 pages of nothing. Again, this book has no redeeming qualities. I strongly recommend no one reads it.
Dated.......2007-07-07
Unfortunately, in the light of recent series and publications about relationships with vampires--not the least of which is TWILIGHT by Stephanie Meyer--this novel by Vivian Vande Velde comes up lacking. First published in 1995, the book's plotline takes nearly a hundred pages to really get moving as the main character tries to wrestle with what the readers have known before opening the book: Ethan is a vampire.
Though the narration is believable and easy to read, the plot takes too long to get going, ensuring some readers will never finish. The author clearly has talent; perhaps in the 1990's, her Kerry Nowicki stories were engaging. In the 2000's, they have too much competition.
A Refreshing Story!.......2007-03-20
Companions of the Night by Vivan Vande Velde is a refreshing vampire story from the typical vampire genre today. Although it still is, of course, a romance, and the two protagonists (sort of) end up liking the other one very much, the vampire character Ethan seems much more mysterious than regular vampire characters and you can never really guess who he is and what he's going to do, which only adds to the suspense and excitement.
The love interest also isn't typical as well, as you can see strength from her. In the end, she does something very hard but courageous which leaves Ethan quiet, and she honestly deserves enough respect as any other human girl should ever deserve.
Also, the storyline is something different. It begins when Kerry, the girl, ends up in the laundry place all tied up with a strange group of men holding a handsome boy hostage. As they escape, she learns he's a vampire but her involvement in his escape leads the group to kidnap her family and put them in danger, and thus, they band up for unknown reasons (until the end) to find her missing father and brother. Throughout the story, motives of Ethan's helpful nature is questionable and Kerry is constantly left in the dark about him and what he really knows about this whole kidnapping issue.
This time, though you're honestly confused whose the good guy and whose the bad guy. Should Ethan be trusted? Why does he act this way? Who should our main character side with, the vampire or this other character whose sworn to kill all vampires? Additionally, the paragraph size and simple vocabulary makes this book a breeze to read.
Honestly, buy it. You'd be doing yourself a creepily good favor.

Customer Reviews:
I got lucky.......2007-08-22
I got lucky when I stumbled upon a Darren Shan book last year. This is good quick fun and just enough scariness and situations to pull it out of the teen series genre in my eyes but neverthess thats where you will find it.
I started and read all 1-12 back to back with only a pause waiting on 12 to come out. GREAT STUFF HERE!
Just ok.......2007-04-16
Once again the Cirque Du Freak series has left me somewhat disappointed. As I began reading the series I thought that the storyline was interesting and even enjoyable to read, but now that I am to the eighth book in the series I feel that the storyline has become drawn out and extremely predictable. That said some aspects of the story I enjoyed were the characters brought back from earier books in the series and the occasional creepy moment delivered by Shan. Overall I feel that the story wasnt awful and I would recommend it to those who liked the previous installments of the saga.
One graet book.......2007-03-01
Darren knew knew for the rest of has life he would have to kill vampenezein the book Allies of the Night in the series of Cirque Du Freak. Darren travels to a town and a unexpected thing happens to him. he meets aperson from the past that he thought he would never see again. Darren is saved in an attackby a person a met along time ago. Darren has to go therw obseclesto do want he wants to do. Darrenhas to protect a person that he really cares about.
I think Darren Shan wrote this book because it was a good mysterey book and intense. Darren said "I really don't want you to come" to the girl he really cares about. I recommed this book to somebody who likes mystery.
Cirque Du Freak:Allies of the night.......2006-11-06
This book is the 8th of a series, "Cirque Du Freak", it is also one of the best. In this book four people are sent on a journey to kill the Lord of Vampaneize. The characters are Darren, Mr.Crepsley, Vancha, and Harket, and this is their destiny. All of the madness starts when Darren has to go back to school:by force, when he goes into his english class his teacher is his ex-girlfriend Debbie. The vampaneize try to kill him and Debbie, but do not succeed. Their savior is Darren's old best friend, Steve, but later finds out he is working with the vampaneize. My favorite part is when the four guys are trapped because the vampaneize are everywhere.
Allies of the Night.......2006-11-06
In this book, half vampire, Darren Shan, full vampire Mr. Crepsley and Vancha March, and little person, Harket Moulds return to this city when they heard of killings which they think are the vampaneze. While they're at the city they find out that Darren was set up to go to school. When Darren was at school he relizes that his English teacher is his old ex-girlfriend. Also in the city Darren encounters with an old friend, R.V, who now was a half-vampaneze. As Darren , Mr.Crepsley, Vancha, and Harket are in search for the vampeneze they join up with Darren's old best friend Steve Leopard. As they are encountered with their enemys, they found themselves betraid by Steve. The group of vampires and little person, runs into a delima whether to save his old girlfriend or to kill the Lord of Vampaneze.
If you love thrilling and action packed books then you will not beable to put this book down.

Three-hundred-year-old Risika looks darn good for her age. Thanks to her "blood mother," a vampire named Ather who turned Risika (nee Rachel) into one of the undead back in 1684, she will always look as fresh as a 17-year-old. Now Risika is a world weary night stalker who sleeps in Concord, Massachusetts, by day and prowls New York City by night, in search of fresh blood to slake her inhuman thirst. One of the benefits of living such a long life has been discovering that most of the popular myths about vampires are not true: "Holy water and crosses do not bother me... and silver does not burn me. If someone hammered a stake through my heart, I suppose I would die, but I do not play with humans, stakes or mallets." In fact, there is little in the mortal world that surprises Risika anymore, until she returns from a hunt one night to find a black rose on her pillow--the same flower she was given on the eve of her mortal death. Knowing that the rose is a taunt from Aubrey, a vampire she believes murdered her human brother, Risika decides to confront her nemesis. In a bloody battle with Aubrey, Risika finally unearths her brother's true fate.
While the plot of this vampire tale may not stand out from the fanged masses of the genre, what does stand out is the fact that the author is 14 years old. Teen horror fans of Anne Rice and L.J. Smith will surely want to experience for themselves how In the Forests of the Night stacks up to their favorite adult titles--and will be especially interested in seeing how one of their young peers plies the writing trade. (Ages 12 to 15) --Jennifer Hubert
Book Description
I was born to the name of Rachel Weatere in the year 1684, more than three hundred years ago.
The one who changed me named me Risika, and Risika I became, though I never asked what it meant. I continue to call myself Risika, even though I was transformed into what I am against my will.
By day, Risika sleeps in a shaded room in Concord, Massachusetts. By night, she hunts the streets of New York City. She is used to being alone.
But now someone is following Risika. Someone has left her a black rose, the same sort of rose that sealed her fate three hundred years ago.
Three hundred years ago Risika had a family -- a brother and a sister who loved her. Three hundred years ago she was human.
Now she is a vampire, a powerful one. And her past has come back to torment her.
This atmospheric, haunting tale marks the stunning debut of a promising young novelist.
Customer Reviews:
This reads like a 16 year old wrote it..........2007-10-02
...which is a compliment, I suppose, considering she was 13 when it was penned. It's actually quite impressive for such a young woman, but the sheer wall of angst, the repetitive use of such overdone terms as good, evil and innocence, not to mention 300 year old creatures who react like high school students when approached with conflict...well, suffice it to say that the high rating this novel has received overall leaves me baffled. The tone, conflict and resolution call out the author's adolescence. I suspect in time, as she gets more life experience, she will be quite good at the craft, but for now? Not so much.
If you are in high school yourself, this might be a good read. Otherwise, skip it. There's plenty of YA lit of high enough caliber to appeal to adult sensibilities. On the plus side, this is an extremely short book, so you won't waste too much of your life if you feel the need to actually complete it.
Hmmmm.............2007-05-21
This is a unique book. It's unique in an obvious way in that it's only about 150 pages. It's also unique in that it delves into vampire world without getting sexually explicit (which I appreciated). Now, because it was so short, the book did lack some depth. With that said, I still found it to be quite captivating. A good read by a promising young author, this book is certainly worth your time.
A book that you just have to finish once you pick it up .......2007-05-05
A thrilling experence that you just want to read over and over again and you feel like you're right there watching the action in your own mind. I borowed it from my teacher for a week and I read it about six times.
-Adam Slavik
A First Effort.......2007-03-22
This is the story of a vampire, living today in Concord, Massachusetts. She wasn't always a vampire, though. Back in the sixteen hundreds, she was a real teenaged human being named Rachel, living with her father, younger sister Lynette, and twin brother Alexander. Alexander had been trying to tell her that there were evil things in the world that might try to hurt her, but Rachel ignored him, despite the fact that he seemed to have strange powers himself. Shortly after that, Rachel was transformed into a vampire and given the name Risika.
Risika has been living the life of a vampire for centuries, but still isn't quite satisfied with what she is. She had a hard time adjusting to the lifestyle and being able to kill humans without guilt. She still seeks vengeance for the death of her twin brother at the hands of Aubrey, another vampire who was there when Rachel was transformed. Now the time seems to be drawing near--Aubrey is challenging her and causing her the anger that may lead to her challenging him. But there is a surprise in store for Risika, something she would never expect.
I liked how this book challenged the basic myths about vampires, making them seem more realistic. The writing, though, was simplistic. I saw the surprise at the end coming, but I didn't think it seemed plausible. It didn't fit into the rest of the story.
Astounding.......2007-02-06
This book is yet again another divine book written by the one and only Amelia Atwater-Rhodes. Of course , it is filled with vampires and Witches and mysterys. Aubrey is a popular charactor in some of her other books that is in this book although, the great thing is although some of the charactors and events are similar or close to her other books you do not have to read them in order to understand whats going on in this particular story.
I also need to single out how well she brought in Charactors. She gives them such a personality that I fell in love with some and hated others.
This book had tons and tons of action and Mystery
No matter what kind of reader you are or what , the plot is so amazing that you have got to read it.

If you think light romantic horror has to be poorly written, you haven't tried L.J. Smith. Meet the denizens of the "Night World," a secret society of "creatures of the night" that has only two rules: never reveal its existence to humans and never fall in love with them. Smooth and exciting, this is froth at its best. Smith's fans will also be thrilled and chilled by the re-release of one of her most popular titles, The Hunter.

Welcome to the Night World.......2006-01-21
Poppy North is a typical sixteen-year old--she gets through school by being smarter than her teachers; likes to irritate her straight-laced twin brother, Phil; listens to New Age and techno music; has a secret crush on her best friend, James; and wakes up on the first morning of summer vacation before her senior year of high-school with nothing more paramount on her mind than what she can do with an entire summer spent with James.
Until the pain in her abdomen, which has steadily been increasing, working its way around to her back, keeping her awake at night, and causing her to lose weight, sends her to the doctor. Who then sends her to the hospital for tests. Where doctors then inform her that she has pancreatic cancer--the kind that will kill you within three weeks to three months.
Poppy, of course, isn't ready to die. Watching the reaction of her family--twin brother Phil, her mother, and step-father Cliff--only brings the truth closer to home. Poppy is going to die, there's nothing anyone can do about it, and it's going to be painful.
Except there is someone who can do something about it. James Rasmussen, her best friend from El Camino High School, her secret crush, a boy who now tells her something impossible--he's a lamia, a boy who was born a vampire, a member of the Night World, and he can change Poppy into a vampire to avoid certain death.
Of course Poppy doesn't believe him at first, but then what choice does she have? There's always been something different about James, and now she knows exactly what the difference is. So she agrees to become a vampire, knowing she'll have to leave her family behind, but knowing it's the only way to avoid certain death.
What follows is a fast-moving, interesting story about Poppy's immersion into becoming a vampire, the toll it takes on her brother, Phil, who finds out what they're doing, and the danger it puts James in. Because there are only two rules of the Night World: Never let the humans know it exists, and never fall in love with one of them. James has broken both of those rules.
What a great start to the Night World series! Towards the end of the book we meet some other interesting characters, which I'm guessing will play major roles in future books, so I can't wait to get started on the next read.
"Never Fall in Love with One of Them...".......2005-07-03
L. J. Smith's fantasy/horror series "The Night World" deals with the existence of a secret society of witches, vampires and shape shifters, and how they interact with the inhabitants of the human world. Although humans have long since gained superiority in the world over the "Night World" minority, the supernatural creatures treat humans with distain and prejudice, often calling them "vermin" and plotting ways in which to regain power over the world.
As such, it is fine for Night World inhabitants to deal with humans in whichever way they please as long as 1. Humans never find out about the Night World and 2. They are never fallen in love with. As the introductory page in every books proclaims: "These are stories about what happens when the rules get broken."
The summer holidays are beginning, and teenager Poppy North is looking forward to hanging out with her twin brother Philip and best friend James Rasmussen. Then disaster strikes - she collapses, is rushed to hospital and diagnosed with cancer. The prognosis is terminal and the cure doesn't exist... and she doesn't have much time left.
Her family are devastated but James is in a frenzy - because he thinks he knows of a way to save her. Unbeknownst to Poppy all this time, James is a vampire and knows that a sure-fire way of saving her is to turn her into a vampire like him. There are several problems however: her family for one thing, and the underlying Night World laws that strictly forbid such involvement in human lives. Poppy would not only have to hide from her own family, but the Night World as well - and does James really want to give her a life of such isolation?
But when Poppy finds out, she makes the decision: she wants to live and she and Phillip prepare for her death and resurrection. The bulk of the storyline is concerned with this detailed process of becoming a vampire which is described in technical rather than mystical tones, told from the three conspirators point of view: James, Phillip and Poppy. The third act is devoted to Poppy's new life as a vampire and her displacement within the world - discovering James has endangered himself for her sake, she decides to take off on her own...but can she manage her new life as a vampire and the new dangers it possesses?
"Secret Vampire" is an entertaining enough read, but certainly not the best of the "Night World" series. Poppy is not L. J. Smith's strongest heroine (at some points she's extremely annoying) and the story itself often goes off onto several tangents with poor reasoning and illogical decisions from many of the characters. And of course, the forced happy-ending is a little hard to swallow - it would have been more poignant if everything wasn't tied up in a neat little bow.
It is not quite the strong beginning that it should have been for the first book in the series, but still a promising one, with a lot of potential for later books. The general premise of a Night World is an intriguing one (especially for the pre-teen audience that they are intended for) and the books get infinitely better as the series goes on. Right from the very beginning Smith introduces minor characters that are later used as protagonists in later installations; namely Ash Redfern and Thea and Blaise Harman. Poppy and James themselves turn up again in "Soulmate" as part of a Circle Daybreak meeting.
Sadly, the "Night World" series has never been completed, as the last book "Strange Fate" has not yet been published - something that may make you reluctant to begin this series. However, although the major story-arc is never completed, each book does stand on its own as a separate story and make good "holiday reads" (books that don't require too many brain cells and are easily entertaining).
This book is amazing.......2005-02-28
If you get the chance to read this book do it. I read the entire Night World Series when I was in the 6th grade, 7 years ago, (with the exception of The Chosen because it was out of print so early on) and loved every one of them. A few days ago I saw my copy of this book lying around and thought hhmm...I should read this. I'm 18 years old now and I still loved it as much, if not more, as I did when I was 11. I've decided to read the enitre series all over again, which means I'm rebuying a few of them. Even if you're not really into Vampires you will love it, it has romance and a great story behind it.
A Must Read.......2004-04-10
This was a really great book. It really touches you when James wants to save Poppy. Poppy is dying of Pancreatic Cancer when her best friend James says he can save her by turning her into a vampire. Everyone should definetly read it. It isn't my favourite book in the series but it is a good start. I really like the way L.J.Smith brings out the characters feelings. It makes you feel what the characters are feeling and leaves you quite emotional. It is such a good book it makes you start to think there is a real night world. My Friend and I love the series and want more books out. I recommend this book to people who like vampire, romance, horror and emotional books. It is da best! L.J.Smith is totally cool!

Book Description
The House of Night series is set in a world very much like our own, except in 16-year-old Zoey Redbird's world, vampyres have always existed. In this first book in the series, Zoey enters the House of Night, a school where, after having undergone the Change, she will train to become an adult vampire--that is, if she makes it through the Change. Not all of those who are chosen do. It’s tough to begin a new life, away from her parents and friends, and on top of that, Zoey finds she is no average fledgling. She has been Marked as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx. But she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers. When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite club, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny--with a little help from her new vampyre friends.
Customer Reviews:
For the most part, great!.......2007-10-01
Marked has all the great makings of a novel - great humor, well researched cultural background, and creativity. I'll admit, when I read the first few pages, I feared it would be one of those ridiculous stereotypical cheerleader main characters narrating the story - thank goodness that wasn't so! I found the idea of vampire finishing school interesting, and Ms. Cast pulled it off excellently.
So why didn't this earn a five?
First was the not-so-subtle insults to non-pagan religions.
Second was the fact that Zoey seemed like she was bordering on Mary-Sue-dom. It seemed to me that the author was stretching it a bit: she just happens to be Cherokee, she just happens to be the only one who has a magical cat, her boyfriend happens to randomly be the hottest guy in school (why did he find her so attractive? It didn't seem natural to me).
Third, I personally found the sexual scene in the beginning (and the heavy on going jokes) over the top. Still, it was nothing that made me feel completely uncomfortable.
Fourth? This is a minor thing, but Zoey's friends at the House seemed too set up/diverse to be a natural occurrence.
Fantastic new series .......2007-09-11
If you think you know what to expect from a PC Cast, then think again, this fantastic new series is unlike anything she's done before, so it looks like the addition of her daughter Kristin as a writing partner had a major impact. Remember the hellish days of the school cliques and being targeted by the most powerful girl in the school and lusting over the hottest boy? Well add to that you've just discovered you're a potential vampyre and you might have a tiny idea of the nightmare that is currently Zoey Redbird's existence.
In Zoey's world vampyres have always existed, they're just kind of weird and nobody wants to admit they know any. So when Zoey starts developing symptoms, she's packed off to the House of Night, a school where she'll spend the next four years of her life training to see if she'll survive the change from Human to Vampyre. It's never easy being the new kid, and when you've just been "Marked" as one of the most powerful fledglings in history you'd better make sure you keep your friends close but your enemies closer. Now if Zoey can just figure out who she's supposed to trust, then things would be a lot easier.
If like us you've been wowed by Stephanie Meyer's Twilight and Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampires then here's another intense, addictive young adult series that will keep you reading well past your bedtime.
Great new take on Vampires.......2007-08-24
PC Cast and her daughter did a wonderful job of creating a new twist to the typical vampire story. This book was so good I could not stop reading and finished it in one day. I can't wait for the sequel to come out!! If you like vampire books this book is a must read.
Great Start to a New Series!.......2007-08-07
Zoe Redbird is not having one of her better days. She's trying to break up with her boyfriend, her best friend is driving her crazy, and now she's been Marked by a vampyre. Zoe enters The House of Night where, as she undergoes her change, she will train to become an adult vampyre. To top things off, Zoe discovers she is no average fledgling. She has been Marked by the vampyre goddess Nix. This is the first book in The House of Night series and wow, what a great beginning! This is aimed at teenagers but adult fans of all things that go bump in the night will also love it, especially if you're already a fan of P.C. Cast's adult novels. Zoe is a wonderful character who you root for through the entire book. The secondary characters are also fantastic, even the villains. Best of all, unlike some books which are co-authored, the chapters flow seemlessly from mother and daughter. There's also quite a bit of humor and I found myself laughing out loud several times while reading. One word of caution: there's one somewhat graphic sexual scene near the beginning of the book. It's all in keeping with the storyline, and what todays teenagers face, but I don't know if I'd feel comfortable recommending it to middle schoolers. The second book "Betrayed will be coming out in October.
Keeps your attention.......2007-08-06
As far as vampire books go, this one will keep your attention. Its such a different take on vampires...can't wait for the next book

I Like the First One Better!.......2007-06-21
Sixteen year old Destiny Weller and her twin sister Livvy used to be very close, until Livvy chose to become a vampire. Now Destiny will do anything to get her sister back. But then Destiny realises that the only way to bring Livvy back is if Destiny becomes a vampire too!
A good book. I liked the first one better. I really disliked the ending.

An astounding prequel.......2006-11-05
This is a fabulous, well written book.
The story about the dangerous vamipres proceed in "Dangerous Girls 2".
I must admit that the first book seemed better; there were some tedious and slow bits in this one. I will not spill to much information here, but there were, to me, some disappointments.
Look apart from that, though, this is a great book.
Very good and sad.......2006-01-07
This book is DAMN good. I hope a third one comes out. It's different. At the end my heart cried out cause it was so sad. I feel sorry for the twins. Very EXCELLENT book. One of RL Stine's best!
Death by Night.......2005-09-28
The book is about these two girls who are twins but one is transformed into a blood sucking vampire. Destiny is trying to transform her sister Livvy back to a human. The father is a vet who is attempting to find a cure for the full-fledged vampires, because he has already found a cure for the half vampire and half human.
I loved the way it was always a mystery of what was going to happen next. This is because it was a book you didn't want to put down. It also made you want to turn the pages as soon as possible. I really didn't dislike the end but it didn't end the way I thought it would.
If you like books with a lot of suspense then you would love this book. I would recommend you read the first book Dangerous Girls.
Livvy and Destiny Face Their Destiny.......2005-09-20
Livvy and Destiny were bitten by a vampire at summer camp. Once home, Destiny was cured but Livvy went on to embrace life as a vampire. Now Destiny and her family must continue to deal with their new lives.
The twins' father is still trying to find a cure for vampirism but must balance that quest with his role as a vampire hunter. The vampires are multiplying and the town is getting scared. It is time to make a full attack on the vampire community.
But all through this we follow Livvy and Destiny and how their lives as twins are intertwined despite living on opposite sides of the dawn. The book concludes in a way that one can accept it as a final ending or as a bridge to further stories about the twins.

Super Reader.......2007-08-27
A little bit ahead of its time, perhaps? Clearly all the paranormal romance type stuff descends from books like this. All, perhaps not the complete formula or enough pron for the girls today. Diana Tregarde is a lot more X-Men than Death Wish or Dirty Harry screwed up like Anita Blake though.
She does know karate, however, and likes to train in spandex, which is pretty funny.
Anyway, Diana Tregarde isn't your run of the mill psionic magic user, she is the superhero version, a Guardian. She saves people from Very Bad Things. Often in her lounge room, it seems.
In this book, we have Nightflyer. Everyone knows this is never good. Here, Nightflyers by George R. R. Martin. Not good. Nightflight to Venus...
errr.. ok, Boney M trauma aside, there is a monster for her to deal with.
She also runs into a real life vampire, which is a bit of a surprise. Especially as she fancies him, and he is old enough to have been rescued by the Scarlet Pimpernel. Still has ex-boyfriend problems, too.
You have to love a woman who, when the chips are down, and the fight is on, nunchuks flying, thinks: "could try a psi bolt instead--" while going all kara-te.
fast fun read.......2007-01-20
I really enjoyed this Lackey book and have purchased others in the series. I love all of Mercedes Lackey's offerings and look forward to anything new!
Terrific beginning for the Diana Tregarde series.......2006-12-30
Apparently Marc Ruby doesn't know the order . . . this is the FIRST book in the series, followed by "Burning Water" then "Jinx High." This book introduces us to the character of Diana Tregarde, a Guardian because of her strong psi(onic)(and psychic) talents. This books takes place sometime about a decade prior to the two other books in her series - in the early 70s, right after Watergate. Diana is helping out a friend by watching her occult shop when trouble walks in the door . . . *heh, couldn't help myself* A tall, Saturnine man with "predator" written all over him comes into the shop and starts to zoom in on some young girls in the shop, so Diana runs him off. Soon after, a very handsome young man comes in and is looking for this other fellow, so she points him off after him. Finally, after the shop is closed, a young Gypsy boy comes from the back of the shop - trying to escape from the first man. Don't want to give too much away, but as is made evident in the information about the book, the second man into her shop is Andre, a vampire spawned about the time of the French Revolution. I think this is my favorite of the three books, because it is the only one in which we actually hear ANYTHING about Andre, except when Diana talks to him on the phone in other books. At any rate, eventually Diana has to go up against 4 psi-vampires (they drain the energy from people and can project negative emotions into their prey in order to gain more energy from them) and a gaki, which is a sort of Chinese soul-sucker. Very spooky. Well written, fast-moving and exciting, I LOVE this book! For anyone who likes vampire books, the earlier Anita Blake novels or Mercedes Lackey.
like it.......2006-07-13
I really enjoyed this one. I have liked all of M. Lackey's books so far. I'm old fashioned. I prefer books that don't rely on four letter words and generally obscene language.

Reread after 15 plus years.......2005-10-27
This is the first series of Mercedes Lackey I read and loved as a teenager. I had the books on my shelves for several years and kept them in my library because I like Mercedes work.
I saw the rerelease of the books and dug mine back off the shelf to reread. I was a little dissapointed after having read so many other of Mercedes books they did not have alot of the character depth and story detail that many of her other books have. I had a difficult time really getting to know Diana again after so many years. The books are still good but I think they were written at a time where the author had less experience in her writing and I would really LOVE to see a newer Diana Tregarde book after so many years later. I think Diana would be a richer character and the boooks would have so much more depth.
These books are a good read but I warn anyone reading these books that are used to the richness of Mercedes's characters to be aware these books were written many years ago when Mercedes appears to not be as detailed in her books.
There are some Diana Stories in the Werehunter series. I recall also somewhere reading on in Marion Zimmer Bradley's Sword and Sorceress books or short stories. I have not seen them in years so I can't be sure.
Good Series but take them with a grain of proverbial salt Mercedes's writing style in the 80s was not as detailed as it is today.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing to say the least.......2007-04-29
This book is probably, in my opinion, one of (if not THE) worst in the Night World Series. It is Ash's story this time, who's soulmate just happens to be a human. (which Ironically was shadowed upon in the first book, 'Secret Vampire'.) Ash's character was cool, charismatic....and totally wasted in this book. Mary Lynnette was too self riteous, too...I don't know. To me, she didn't come off as the strong female lead she was supposed to. Instead, I found myself annoyed at her several times throughout the book. She was presumptuous, she was always assuming things, and she was rather stereotypic if you ask me. I think someone like Maggy from 'Black Dawn', or even someone like Hanna or Gillian from 'Soulmate' and 'Dark Angel' would have been a better match for Ash, not this smart alec, holier than thou woman named Mary Lynnette.
The book itself was lacking as well. We pretty much learn nothing about the nightworld, it doesn't much progress the series except to mention a few characters that appear in future books. All in all, a disappointment. Ash's first appearance in 'Secret Vampire' stole the show, so when this book was released, I was ecstatic. 'Finally', I thought. 'Something that touches on Ash's past and personality. We will finally get to read his story.' Well, as it turned out, he was poorly underwritten. Or perhaps this particular book would have worked better if it had been a little later in the series, if Mary Lynnette wasn't so sharp tongued, if there weren't so many CHARACTERS to concentrate on. This wasn't so much Ash and M.L's story as it was all the sisters. Too many people to concentrate on. The three sisters should have been given their own book for character developement if that was the case. I would suggest this book only to those who wish to further their Night World series collection, or just their L.J Smith collection, in general. As for the enjoyment factor?
...Nadda.
Soul-mates.......2006-04-03
I have read nearly all of the books in the Night-world series, and I have to say that this one is my favourite, without a doubt! It is Ash of course that just makes this book, he is irrestible, I became hooked on him from the very first, I guess it's the whole 'bad-boy' vampyre thing he's got going on that you become addicted to him! I started reading these books years ago, but they went out of print, I would love to get the last few if anyone has any idea how I can get them! I would recommend these books to anyone of any age, I mean I'm 21 now, and I still love them!
Possibly the Best out of this series!.......2005-06-25
It was this book nearly 10 years ago that made me fall in love with L.J. Smith and her writing. I have read nearly everything by her in the years after my first encounter with Daughters of Darkness, yet this book remains dear to my heart. The characters pop out of the pages and you fall in love instantly with Rowan, Jade, and Kestrel...but you will especially fall in love with Ash. Look for Ash again in the 6th book of the series when he makes another appearance. This book is fantastic!
BEST BOOK EVER!!.......2004-02-12
This is 1 of da bst books dat i have EVER read! @ my school, we are doing a play on this & im playin Mary-Lynette. i cant wait 2 get to the last chapters when they finally give in 2 each other! Gr8 books!
Second Book in the Night World Series.......2003-03-15
Set in Briar Creek, Oregon, "Daughters of Darkness" primarily follows 17-year-old Mary-Lynnette Carter, though the book is supposedly about her new neighbors, three vampire sisters: Rowan, Kestrel, and Jade Redfern. The book does start off that way, following these three runaways on their way to their aunt's house. There they discover that their aunt has been killed--staked through the heart by a possible vampire hunter who wants to punish them for breaking the laws of the Night World, which all vampires, werewolves, and witches must abide by in this series. In an attempt to cover their tracks, the sisters bury the old woman in their backyard, but Mary-Lynnette sees them doing this--and again, later on, in the company of her younger brother, Mark, when they transfer the body into the woods.
To make a long story short, Mary-Lynnette and Mark are befriended by these vampires in a blood-tie ceremony and promise to help find the killer running loose in Briar Creek. Like all of L. J. Smith's books, there's an added bit of romance to the paranormal/horror base of the story, for both Mary-Lynnette and Mark. (They meet their respective soulmates: Ash and Jade.) Even though I haven't read any of the other books in this series and can't compare this one to the others, I really liked "Daughters of Darkness." It was fast-paced, well-written, and ideal for teens who are into paranormal romances.

As night falls Rashel stalks the streets............2003-10-17
looking for vampire scum! After a friend and family perish at the hands of an evil vampire Rashel whips herself into killer shape and goes on a rampage as she leads a double life...hunting vampires by night and attending school during the day! All is well for Rashell, kicking vampire butt at night until she crosses paths with a magnetic vampire named Quinn. Rashell finds herself foiling the kidnapping plan and letting Quinn go free!
Their paths then cross again when Rashel goes undercover at a Nightworld night club...
Quinn has no idea the beautiful green eyed girl he meets at the underground club is the same lethal vampire slayer he met that night he was ambushed and then set free by. A determined Rashell wants to be let into a nightworld slave trade and will use all her wiles to get Quinn to let her into the slave trade.
This book has an exsplosive ending! Astonishing secrets are revealed to both Quinn and Rashel. L.J. Smith is my top author and I also suggest Christopher Pike.
One of the Better Ones.......2002-11-03
As the fifth book in the Night World series, 'The Chosen' improves on all four of the previous books, drawing on deeper themes and ideas than the rest, and setting the scene for this continuing trend in the next book 'Soulmate'.
Rashel Jordan is only five years old when she witnesses her mother being killed and her younger brother Timmy being drunken from by a vampire. Because she's seen the killer and is telling others about what happened he comes after her when she stays at her Aunt Corinne's house, burning it to the ground. Rashel is alone in the world.
At seventeen years old, she is the bane of vampire-kind. Calling herself 'the Cat' she hunts and kills their kind in all of the major cities, and there is a large bounty on her head. At the time this story takes place Rashel goes to the Lancers, a human organisation for killing vampires and joins in with a small group who're watching a warehouse that has been lately occupied by vampires. Their goal is to catch a vampire and discover its reasons for being there - through torture if need be. Among the group is a young girl named Nyala whose sister was killed by a vampire. Yet when the vampire is caught and the others go to scout around, Rashel finds that to her horror she and the vampire - Quinn (last seen in Daughters of Darkness) are soulmates. Letting him go, Rashel finds that she is suddenly wanted by both sides of the fight - the vampires still have a bounty on her head, and the Lancers think she has defected to the other side.
And it doesn't end there. While on the run from both of them Rashel literally runs into a young girl Daphne Childs, who is one of the missing young girls of late. With her in tow Rashel has access to exactly what the vampires are up to. For unknown reasons - though Rashel suspects its the slave trade - girls are being abucted from a club known as the Black Iris by none other than Quinn himself. Rashel's mission is clear - get into the club, become one of these 'chosen' and thus get herself to one of the secret and hidden vampire enclaves. And she'll have to do it by herself...
As you can see, the premise is a fascinating one, and there is no shortage of interesting characters and ideas. Not all vampires are bad, not all humans are good so it would seem, and there are enough twists and turns, suspence and excitement to keep most people interested. It draws on things mentioned from the other books - the enclave is probably much like the ones Rowan, Kestrel and Jade escaped from in Daughters of Darkness, and the password that Rashel uses with the Lancers 'the night has a thousand eyes/and the day only one' is re-used in the prophesy in book seven. L. J. Smith extends more on her idea and the nature of the Night World than previously seen, and several characters pop up that will have appearences in other books - namely Hunter and Lily Redfern.
The 'mission' plot strand gives the book some focus (too often L. J. Smith's work rambles, changes, backtracks or doesn't know where its going) and the pace is fast and never dwindles.
However, there are a few flaws, the nature of which keeps this book from being a 'five-star' novel. The character of Nyala was a complicated and intriguing one - a girl who was slightly mentally unstable. I don't want to give too much away, but for those who have read the books, I felt that she should have perished in the fire. Okay, that's not very nice of me, but a good author should know when to destroy a character for greater impact in the book's progression. But no, L.J. Smith simply *had* to save her, didn't she. She just *had* to have yet another happy, cliche-ridden ending that is so prevailent in so many of her books. To have Nyala has a tragic figure would have been both poignant and heartbreaking - *that's* what we should have come away from the book feeling.
Secondly, Daphne Child's part in the book is pretty implausible. Let me get this straight - she manages to escape from the jaws of certain death and is saves by pure chance by Rashel. And when she is faced with what she got away with, she wants to...do it again? Huh? Yes, yes, she's very brave about going back to the Night Club and letting herself get kidnapped, but come on! - it was just plain stupid. No one in real life would ever do this to themselves. It was the same when Rashel was at the docks and she turned around to find all the girls still there - face it, they would have run like deer.
It also ended very abruptly - we don't know what is to become of Timmy, of the girls, of the enclave...it ends with simply the boat sailing back to the shore. I for one had many unanswered questions, and since each book tells of a totally different couple, they weren't to be found in the next book.
Finally, the use of the name 'Timmy', brought back Lassie flashbacks: 'Oh no, Timmy's down the well!' Unfortunatly this meant whenever Timmy turned up I was plauged by visions of him floudering in water.
All in all however, a good read. One of L.J.'s more suspenseful, darker works. Highly recommended in the context of the Night World series.
But 'Timmy'?...
Pretty Good.......2002-06-21
This is a pretty good book. The characters are good. The plot's great. The writing's wonderful. So what's my problem? It should have been longer! Most of the Night World books by L.J. Smith manage to feel complete despite being short. "The Chosen" was different. The characters, their feelings, and their lives were complex. I especially would have been interested in learning more about Quinn. It just felt a bit rushed to me at the end. Actually, that's probably a good thing, that I loved the characters enough to want more. In any case, for the length she had to work with, L.J. Smith did a pretty good job.
The best in the series!.......2002-01-16
This is my all time favourite L.J. Smith book although it is closely followed by Huntress. I loved Rashel's strong character and Quinn was to die for as the vampire guy with no heart. I felt that this was the best written book and the characters were a lot more realistic than in some previous ones. Also nice touch with the flashbacks into their pasts to give them more depth and background.
Rashel kicks butt in her role as the breathtakingly beautiful and devastatingly dangerous slayer of vampires. Ever since she was a kid, Rashel has been picking off evil Night World people and she has never been beaten or caught. Determined to find the vampire who killed her mother, a chance encounter with the deadly vmpire Quinn will change her life.
When she gives him a chance to escape, Quinn realises that this beautiful girl is far from what she seems. Later, they meet again and once again, Rashel is faced with either killing him or letting him escape and possibly ruining her disguise. She lets him go and soon after, he too his faced with the same choice.
Fantastic! Deserves 10 stars! Couple of questions though. Why is it that the humans never seem to want to become vampires? It's not that bad really, from the book description and would solve problems like dying. The best book though!
How can you love the thing you should hate?.......2001-12-10
As the fifth book in the Night World series, especially after the insipid 4th novel "Dark Angel", it was a surprise how brilliant this one was. "The Chosen" breaks free of Night World formula, Rashel Jordan, a fierce vampire hunter out for vengeance for her mother's death does not fall in love with John Quinn an especially ruthless made vampire immediately, she instead tries to stake him.
I loved the characters in this book Rashel isn't a powerless, insipid small town girl looking for love like other heroines in the series. She is a master of martial arts and has already been exposed to the Night World by her mother's murder when she was 5. This book heralded a change in the series moving from light weight YA romance to deeper themes. It answers many questions about the Night World like "are there any humans who know about the Night World and do they hunt down its members?" Yes and Rashel "The Cat" Jordan is one of the most efficient hunters of night world prey, "Do Night Worlders ever tire of immortal life?" Yes John Quinn is close to cracking under the weight of living since Puritan times, until he meets Rashel and so an unlikely cat and mouse romance begins. Should she stake him? Should he make her a vampire like him? How can a slayer and a vampire fall in love?
This is very reminiscent of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the plot deals with how bad Night Worlders (who before this we have never really seen)think and deal with vermin/humans. A smuggling operation with human runaways as food supplies brings Quinn and Rashel together, with her determined to stop it and Quinn an equal partner in the enterprise. True to form Quinn and Rashel are soulmates who must now find a way to co-exist. For those who were heartbroken when Angel left Buffy this acts as great consolation. I urge evryone to buy this book, even if previous Night World offerings left you cold, this is where the story changes!!

night world books.......2006-08-04
I fell in love with the nightworld books a long time ago, and
bought each one when it came out and reread them over and over
again. When I got the internet I looked for strange fate with no
luck, now supposedly there is. I reordered used copies of two books because I lost them. I'm looking forward to rereading the
series which I haven't done in ages because I've been so annoyed
I couldn't find out what happens next. I only hope that there is
a U.S. release of strange fate, I hope both the publisher and L.J.Smith realizes that not to do so will be unfair to all U.S.
readers who bought her books and have been waiting so long for
the concludsion. It would be like J.K. Rowling saying I'm only
going to release the last Harry Potter book in these places the
rest of you too bad, you don't get to find out. And we all know
that isn't happening to the potter books so why should a publisher do it to a series which have been popular in the united states do it to strange fate now? we deserve to know the ending, we have been waiting just as long as eveyone else to read
the final tale. I would preorder it in a second if I saw the title on the booksite for release. I only hope that it will be
availble to me here in the U.S..
Update on Strange Fate!.......2005-09-22
First off I must say that this was the first of Smith's books that I picked up, and I have read it many times since then. The latest news on Strange Fate is that Smith has almost finished it, and is planning to release it to publishers soon. She is also looking at editing the rest of the books in the series. No definite dates set, but let's stay hopeful!
The Best!.......2005-05-17
This book is one of the best! The magical way LJSmith wrote drawn me into a magical world.A twine of magic, adventure and romance, you can hardly put this book down after you started. And I have been reading the same book for like 10 times! You should also check out ALL her books. They will draw you into suspense...
Wonderful as usual.......2004-05-10
This latest story set in the Night World is L.J. Smith at her best. Galen, the hero isn't the usual tough guy. He's kind and sweet without ever being wimpy. Keller and Iliana are amazing characters as well, even if Iliana does start a little ditzy. You (or at least I) can't help but care about the characters and hope that somehow everything works out at the end.
The back of the book is slightly misleading - Galen is NOT destined to be the Iliana's soulmate - he's destined to be her husband. As those familiar with the Night World know, that's a big difference. For those who aren't familiar with the Night World this book probably isn't the one to start with. If you don't want to start all with the first book in the series (Secret Vampire), which is also absolutely amazing, you might want to try Huntress (book 7)as that's the book where the concept of Wild Powers and the end of the world is first explained.
Lisa Jane Smith's Witchlight is great!.......2003-02-27
I liked Keller. I liked Galen. I even like Iliana. It was as usual a great story.
I just didn't think the romance was very well developed in this book but as usual the way Lisa Jane Smith writes draws me into the magical world she has created. I am desperate to read another book by her, having read every book she's written except Heart of Valor and that only was because I can't get my hands on it. If anyone else is looking for someone to read until L.J.'s next book here are some of my suggestions:Annette Kurtis Clause, Sweep series by Cate Tieran, Isobel Birds Circle of Three, Companions of the night (Vivian Vende Velde? I think that's how it's spelled) Christopher Pike and the daughters of the moon series.
