During his junior year at the University of California, Dan Millman first stumbled upon his mentor (nicknamed Socrates) at an all-night gas station. At the time, Millman hoped to become a world-champion gymnast. "To survive the lessons ahead, you're going to need far more energy than ever before," Socrates warned him that night. "You must cleanse your body of tension, free your mind of stagnant knowledge, and open your heart to the energy of true emotion." From there, the unpredictable Socrates proceeded to teach Millman the "way of the peaceful warrior." At first Socrates shattered every preconceived notion that Millman had about academics, athletics, and achievement. But eventually Millman stopped resisting the lessons, and began to try on a whole new ideology--one that valued being conscious over being smart, and strength in spirit over strength in body. Although the character of the cigarette-smoking Socrates seems like a fictional, modern-day Merlin, Millman asserts that he is based on an actual person. Certain male readers especially appreciate the coming-of-age theme, the haunting love story with the elusive woman Joy, and the challenging of Western beliefs about masculine power and success. --Gail Hudson

5 out of 5 stars A Book That Changes Lives.......2007-09-05

Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman is a first-person narrative of the author's search for happiness. A student at the University of California at Berkley, Dan's life revolved around school and gymnastics. Stressed with his life Dan left his apartment and took a stroll around town. What he did not know is that this walk would change his life forever. His experiences and outlook on life changed once he entered the doors of the infamous gas station. Dan walked in the gas station and saw an old man sitting in a chair. When he walked out of the gas station, the same man was on the roof. Wanting to know how the man got on the roof, Dan returned nightly to obtain his answer. Over numerous years, Dan learned lessons that aided in his quest to become a Warrior.

Dan Millman is a University of California at Berkley graduate, a world trampoline champion, and member of the Gymnastics Hall of Fame. He was the director of gymnastics at Stanford University, and later became a professor at Oberlin College. He has written 13 self-help books and gives talks and seminars all over the United States and abroad. He currently lives in Northern California with his family.

This book is incredibly powerful and leaves the reader with a new perspective on life. The vividness of word choice creates a surreal vision. An explanation of The Warrior is offered by Socrates, Dan's guide on his new quest. Socrates, 94, incorporates Eastern philosophy and Western fitness to embark on a spiritual odyssey to discover the meaning of life and becoming a warrior. Socrates uses humor, kindness, and love in his teachings to convey that happiness, creativity, and fulfillment can be achieved by developing one's human potential. By the end of the book, it is difficult to have dry eyes. The reader really connects with Dan and has a desire for him to be successful in his journey.

This book was very hard to locate and is found in the New Age section of bookstores, an unusual area to search for a personal growth/fiction book. It is a story based on true aspects of Millman's life.

This book is recommended for teenagers and older. It is important to have a good grasp of vocabulary and some life experience to understand the concept of this book. Other books by Dan Millman are: The Life You Were Born to Live: A Guide to Finding Your Life Purpose, and Wisdom of the Peaceful Warrior: A Companion to the Book that Changes Lives. The reader must be open to new ideas, and new ways of looking at oneself and the world to appreciate this story.

Way of the Peaceful Warrior has been made into a movie starring Nick Nolte, Scott Mechlowicz and Amy Smart. The movie version recently came out on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Something for Everyone.......2007-08-31

This is a great book. I have read it four times and still find something new or benefitical each time. This book has something for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of wisdom...if open to it.......2007-08-29

For me, the book is full of wisdom, of challenge, & insight for living in the here and now in a mindfull way. I was challenged to empty my cup (partially succeeded) of my preconceptions, ideas and belief systems to be able to take in what I saw as stretches for me and ah-ha points that help me along.

Is the book for everyone? Maybe. Maybe not. That depends on the readers want, need and openess.

5 out of 5 stars It will open your eyes.......2007-08-27

I first saw a trailer for Peaceful Warrior when I attended a film festival in Washington DC back in April of 2006, to see Hard Candy. I didn't quite grasp it, and forgotten it - then somewhere along the line, Peaceful Warrior has resurfaced (the June 30 release) I haven't seen it in theatres, but my interested had once again peaked. I then watched the trailer countless times on youtube. I finally saw the film, and was amazed. It had struck me, and I've decided to purchase the book right after my viewing.

Last Wednesday, it had arrived, and I started reading - I have only a few pages to go before I am finished..and I can safely say, this is one of the best books I have read in my life. I do not judge it on entertainment, or on escapism or writing, or anything else (although yes! this book IS entertaining) i judge this book on the LIFE LESSON it teaches, and I can't recommend it enough. This book will be passed on to my friends and to everyone I know, who is willing to OPEN THEIR EYES and to REALIZE what has been missing in their lives. Constant thoughts were running through my mind when reading the book - and as I read it, I highlit every lesson Socrates taught. Some of them hit home so much, some of them made me realize and open my eyes a little bit (Yes, I can't say I have yet opened my eyes, I'm only a fool in kindergarten by Socrates standards!). Since reading the book, I've been practicing the lessons taught, and I've been trying to be more self-aware. I have been searching for something like this, searching for something I did not know myself - I was searching for THIS LESSON that THIS BOOK TEACHES, In movies, and in film but could never find it - and THIS is the one literary work that SATISFIES my search. We can choose to start living NOW, PRESENTLY. I will continue my journey through reading more of Millman's works, and my journey in general.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Information for arthritis sufferers.......2007-09-02

This author has figured out what causes many cases of arthritis. I have osteoarthritis and have been following her recommendations for about a month now. I can already tell a difference in the way I feel. If I cheat, I can really tell the difference the next day. I recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Using The Book.......2007-03-26

Book was very organized and as a result was clear. The format of explanation and then giving a plan of action was excellent. The only thing it needed to be a 5 Star was a little more humor.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-03-26

A different theory at what causes arthritis, written by someone who generally cured herself. Talks a lot about food sensitivities that cause arthritis and how to figure out what your food sensitivity so you can avoid or reduce your expose thus feel better.

3 out of 5 stars The Type of Arthritis the Author Has Should Be Revealed!.......2007-03-13

I think this is a good book, but unfortunately, the author's type of arthritis (allergic) is not related to rheumatoid arthritis, which is what my husband has. So, basically, I wasted my money on a book we cannot use.

5 out of 5 stars a miracle.......2007-01-20

This book and the ideas expressed in it are nothing short of a miracle. I started having my first hints of RA 11 months ago. It took 3 months of rapidly developing pain in most of my joints until I was finally diagnosed. After the devastating news & realization that the heavy drugs I was on were not having much if any effect I started seeking out alternatives on the internet. That is when I ran across the food/arthritis connection & this book - Conquering Arthritis. It has been nothing short of a miracle. After the week detox I could already bend my fingers which was something I thought I would not do again, I was already convinced. The process of healing is a very long & stressful task. Identifying all my problem foods took 4 - 5 months & it seemed like I would never be able to eat a normal meal. It has been well worth it as now I have no pain from RA. This takes complete dedication & I was amazed at how much strength I had as I went though so many struggles emotionally & physically to be pain free. My motivation was thinking about a miserable future where I couldn't walk & enjoy the outdoors which made the alternative, the temporary struggles of the diet, seem like nothing. I can now make relatively normal meals again with just a few substitutions. I know that at this point I am not completely healed but I am well on my way. It has been a year since my first pains. I have come so far & feel so blessed everytime I go out to take a jog or hike. Barbara Allan has been such a blessing and an inspiration. I am so thankful for this book. I encourage anyone with any kind of arthritis to buy it. It is life changing!

Book Description

Women's recovery can differ from men's, and each person's recovery is in many ways unique. That's why Stephanie Covington has designed this workbook to help a woman find her own path-- and find it in terms especially suited to the way women experience not just addcition and recovery but also relationships, self, sexuality, and everyday life. Deepening and extending the lessons of a book that has helped countless women, this workbook makes "A Woman's Way through the Twelve Steps" that much more measured, meaningful, and clear. Unlike many "rewritten" Twelve Step interpretations for women, this guide works with the original Step language, preserving its spirit and focusing attention on its healing message. In sections devoted to each of the Twelve Steps, Covington blends narrative, self-assessment questions focused on a feminine definition of terms such as "powerlessness" and "letting go" guided imagery exercises, and physical activities.

5 out of 5 stars A woman's Way is a terrific guide.......2006-02-22

A Woman's Way Through the twelve steps workbook is a great tool to accompany Stephanie Covington's book "A Womans Guide through the Twelve Steps. The questions are insightful and to the point without being overwhelming. I have found these two books to be an immeasurable asset to working the twelve steps.

5 out of 5 stars Heads Up Ladies!.......2000-10-11

This is definitely a head's up and listen up for women in recovery....using this in conjunction with "A Womans' Way Through the Twelve Steps" is a sure way to add to any other 12 step program that you may be using. I am a person who has been in recovery for 10 years, and found that many women's issues were not being addressed and this combination is an absolute winner. It can be used by yourself, working with a sponsor or in a group ..some wonderful "aha's" have been experienced and so many women helped in this process. Read it...do it....you won't be sorry.

Book Description

Procrastination...Envy...Anger...Self-pity...Compulsion....In any of its many forms, self-defeating behavior is the single most common reason that people seek psychotherapy. It is a poison that prevents people from achieving the love, success, and happiness they desire. Get Out of Your Own Way is an antidote, explaining the reasons for self-sabotage by going back to the childhood origins of various behaviors. With anecdotes and usable insights drawn from twenty years of psychiatric clinical practice, Dr. Mark Goulston shares ideas that have helped thousands of patients overcome pain, fear, and confusion-to approach life's challenges with dignity, wisdom, courage, and even humor.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners.......2007-09-29

This is an excellent book for anyone trying to determine their self-defeating behaviors. My favorite aspect of this book is the quick "Usable Insights" at the end of each mini chapter. For example, Chapter 12 is titled "Focusing on What Your Partner is Doing Wrong." The Usable Insight at the end of this chapter is "If you really want to work on your relationship, watch your partner's efforts, not just your own" (Goulston and Goldberg 52). The authors then provide seven bullets on how you can use this insight in the "Taking Action" section.

Although I enjoyed this book, I only gave it four stars because I think it is somewhat geared towards self-help beginners. If you have read many self-help books of this nature, most of the discussion in this book will be old hat for you. I personally did not find any new insights, but it was a good way to refresh knowledge I learned from previous books. Also, the book does not provide any in depth analysis ever. It breezes through the sections very quickly, and provides more of an overview of the larger problem. If you have a very serious self-defeating behavior, you will want to find a book geared specifically towards that area.

3 out of 5 stars great title... for neurotic partners.......2007-03-04

Honestly, I cannot comment on the book. I just bought it for a neurotic partner who thought it was ok to waste someone's else time.

if you have one shot, just letting them read the title will help...you. Recommended for this purpose.

Others, good luck and best wishes.

5 out of 5 stars GOOD DAILY ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT.......2005-10-23

I read this book every day at breakfast. The quotations are especially good. It's uncanny how often what the authors suggest is helpful during the day.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but tends to use sterotypes.......2005-05-10

This book is about helping you find out what emotional actions you commit or what emotional feelings you have and how to get over it before it destroys you. It covers a wide range of over forty habits and explains each of them in at least three pages. Being so short, it is able to keep your interest long enough to continue on without getting bored. It is just the right length per habit and gives great insight to why it happens and cuts to the bone how to stop it alone or with help. It cover a lot of habits that can hinder you. Here are a few.
-Putting off what you can do today.
-Talking too much.
-Saying yes when you want to say no.
-Spouse fights.
-Assuming they want nothing in return.
-The loss of a loved one.
-Trying to change others.
-Holding it all in.
-Thinking they are doing it to upset you.
It can just be a taster book though. You can find your topic and expand on it from other resources. This book can really open up your eyes to your own habits.
The problem I have with the book is that it tends to lean on sterotypes. They use she a lot when it comes to intimate problems and they use he when it comes to problems about being inferior or weak. Although it may be true that many men tend to believe that men cannot ask for help or women tend to believe they are much more emotional, it is not at all true. When you see someone in public, they may only put on a act in public. Imagine Mike Tyson writing romance novels. Insane huh? Well, do not assume the stereotypes that this book may talk about, but it is true when it comes to the actual problem.

I strongly recommend it. You may have a topic about you and don't even know about it.

5 out of 5 stars Practical approach and easy read.......2005-03-19

The first self-help book that I have read from cover to cover and go back to review one or more chapters when I find myself falling back in to old habits. The author shows a gift for finding language that is easy to relate to and through quotes, usable insights and action plans, provides the reader with the foundation for change.

Truly, we as children of the King should prevail to walk as such. Great teaching in the book and wonderful insight given to both authors to release God's love to the reader.

3 out of 5 stars What Harner thinks "Westerners" want.......2007-09-24

This is the fourth time in the past decade I've read this book cover to cover (as opposed to looking up specific factoid and techniques) and I'm finding that this time through, I'm not so fond of it. It's not that it's horrible; it's just not as impressive to me these days, now that I know more than I used to.

Harner's book is pretty much a classic on NEOshamanism; it forms the foundation of core shamanism, a shamanic practice that is (mostly) devoid of specific cultural trappings. His background in anthropology, as well as experience training as a shaman in the Jivaro and Conibo tribes, make this a well-researched and well-informed book. There are plenty of endnotes, and a good bibliography, so it's easy to trace where he got his information from.

The problem is the presentation of the practical material. First off, my main complaint is that his selection of techniques seems incredibly arbitrary. He draws on the tobacco ties of certain Native American traditions, Jivaro-flavered sucking shamanism, and the spiritual canoe from a particular Northwest Native tribe. And he seems to ignore a number of shamanic practices that may not be necessarily appealing to the New Age crowd, such as spiritual dismemberment and reassembly.

Also, he fails to mention that even within a specific culture there are several types of shamanism. He should have, IMO, either billed this as a form of healing shamanism, or stuck to one of the cultures he trained in, rather than adding in elements of numerous cultures. He doesn't quite draw shamanism far enough away from its cultural roots to make it fit together well; rather than doing as Peter J. Carroll did with Chaos magic, and making a system that is not at all culturally specific (and so can be plugged into any culture), Harner attempts to make (certain) cultural artifacts relevant for people outside that culture, while also trying to make it relevant to modern mainstream American (and other postindustrial) culture. Unfortunately, the end result still retains enough of the original cultural material (such as biases against certain animals like snakes and insects) without explaining the contextual relevance of such elements.

Finally, he waters down certain pieces of information. "The SSC [Shamanic State of Consciousness], it can be said, is safer than dreaming," he says (xxii). Yet shamanism, even in modern practice, is NOT safe. He doesn't talk about spiritual defense, other than talking about how one's power animal and other guardians are supposed to protect you. He barely brings up any dangers, other than seeing animals with bared fangs. Nor does he talk about how close to the edge shamanism can bring a practitioner (or the skills needed to maintain a proper balance).

In short, this is shamanism for the living room. The techniques itself are solid, despite the contextual issues, and can be easily used by most people who pick up this book. If presented as a book on shamanic techniques, I give it a four. However, as a book on *shamanism*, I give it a two. This balances out to three out of five.

5 out of 5 stars how-to guide for shamanism.......2007-08-22

Shamanism is not a religion.

A shamanic journey is something you can do, rather easily, if only you try.

you do not need anything other than this book.

Mr. Harner is not in the business of lying to you. He has no time for telling you "truths."

This is a "For Dummies" guide to shamanic practice.

Do not be afraid. If you are interested, buy the book. Do the excercises. See what happens.

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful introduction to shamanism.......2007-05-28

This introduction to shamanism is based on the vivid experience of the author with shamans from native societies and his sometimes dramatic adventure in the realms of the Shamanic State of Conscience. It is a compact but comprehensive report of experiences, techniques and thoughts of shamans and scholars that devoted to the study of shamanism. The book denotes a long period of serious practical learning and research. It presents also a very intersting philosophical and spiritual point of view of the relation of humans with all other beings and Nature. The comments presented and the techniques proposed by the author as adapted to our western way of life, consitute a practical guide to those intending to introduce themselves to the practice of shamanism.

4 out of 5 stars Call back.......2007-05-16

While I truly appreciate the information and insight Harner has brought to the west, his writing is amazingly academic and cerebral. If you are seeking an experiential glimpse of shamanism or a more instructional text, this book is not it. To learn *why* shamanism, absorb every page.

5 out of 5 stars The Original and Still the Best Introduction.......2007-04-11

When Michael Harner's book, The Way of the Shaman, came out in the early 1980s, it was revolutionary. It was an easy-to-read book on a little-known subject, and it still is. Harner popularized the words "shaman" and "shamanism" and many people became interested in shamanism because of this book.

Reading this book won't teach you how to journey, but no book can do that. What it will do, unlike most of the books with "shamanism" in the title (many of them filled with nonsense) that have been published since, is clearly explain the basics of what shamanism really is and what shamans do. I always recommend it to beginners in my shamanism group as the best book to read before learning to journey.

While Harner's "core shamanism" doesn't seem to me to be quite as generic as he believes, presumably because he was deeply influenced by his own studies with the Jivaro, I still think his approach is the best.

After 25 years, The Way of the Shaman is still the best place for beginners to start. Even if you're not a beginner, it's a must-read for anyone interested in doing shamanic practices.

5 out of 5 stars The Artists Way.......2007-10-02

This book is so incredible. I am starting to see the creative possibilities again.

5 out of 5 stars get out of your own way.......2007-09-27

When I worked at an art supply shop, we carried The Artist's Way as a standard item; oft I would skim through it, purchase the book, then wrap it up and hand it over with a blessing. I never thought that I was blocked creatively or had an issue with the producing of art. 5 or more years have passed, 8 or 9 gifts have been given and this year, for my birthday I bought it FOR MYSELF. How many times do we as creative people take for granted our creativity? ~or~ Are we blocked as people, and therefor our creations suffer as a result??
What Ms. Cameron has done is give us creative types {WE ALL ARE} permission to peel away the layers of ingrained LEARNED crud- at our own pace- to reveal the artist we all need to embrace- be she/he a painter, writer, sculptor, composer, chef- whatever. Set up in weekly chapter format, there are exercises to get one centered- back to self. You start by making a commitment to yourself to write daily, take care of your body mind and spirit, and relish in personal outings of "frivolity."
We all possess within us the strength and understanding of what works and does not. This wonderful book just pushes us along gently to reveal it.
Happy Reading,
Violet {Artist at Large}

5 out of 5 stars It works!.......2007-08-19

I received THE ARTIST"S WAY when it was originally published (1994?). I was living in Japan and had the time and opportunity to work thru it. It was very interesting and informative in revealing myself...to myself! It wasn't until a year later when I returned to the U.S. that a light when off in my head and I realized that the impact the book had made on me was reflecting in my life. My career became easier. My relationships became more meaningful. There was a tremendous block that had been removed and I srongly believe that it was the result of working thru this book. It made me stronger. Over the years I have recommended it to others and I highly recommend this edition to you. (One small thing that it did was to enable me after fourteen years of procrastination to write to former president, Jimmy Carter. Well, he wrote me back!) Good luck with your journey!

1 out of 5 stars not much content.......2007-08-15

This book may impress many people because of its psycho-lingo, its New Age palaver, and its abundance of second person pronouns. There is a 12-week program to follow, but that is probably for the author's desire to become a cult leader and the readers' desire to become cult followers.

But if you want to learn something you don't already know, you might be disappointed. The message of the book, in fifty words or less, is to resist any friends, relatives, or guilty feelings which tell you that creative pursuit is a waste of time.

That is nothing new. A Transactional Analyst might say the same thing, using the terms Parent and Child. A Freudian might say the same thing, using the terms superego and id.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the Work.......2007-08-03

I have yet to make it through this book after a couple of years of trying, but it is well worth the effort to get your inner artist unblocked. Even unfinished it has helped me make great creative strides. Worth the investment. Worth the work.

4 out of 5 stars Fun and it works...........2002-01-24

While I don't claim to be a master of what Huna "should" be, I will just comment on some of the useful things that I enjoy about this book.

I like things that do what they claim they will. As simply as possible, the results I get when I apply the Huna principles within Mastering Your Hidden Self are the results that are claimed I will get. That's good enough for me.

As another reviewer elegantly stated, there is a nice "description" of how the "subconscious" works.

From someone without a degree in Huna (myself) this book is very helpful in making changes.

3 out of 5 stars Fair.......2000-05-06

I read this book early in my HUNA studies, and did not know enough to spot the errors.

Since then; I have taken the HUNA course from HRI (HUNA Research Inc.), read every HUNA related book I could lay my hands on, and gained first hand HUNA experience.

Here are three errors that bother me the most.

1. the author implies that Jesus and the early church practised HUNA (Also one of Max Freedom Long's errors in logic). It's true that the early church did energy work, but that does not necessarily mean they practised HUNA. I studied Qigong (originating in China), Reiki (originating in Japan), Seichim (originating in Egypt, HUNA (originating in Hawaii), and others. I am trying to say that energy work has been practised EVERYWHERE.

2. The author misnames the three selves (or spirits) associated with a person. Unihipili (ku), Uhane (lono), and Aumakua (Kane). Ku, Lono, and Kane are three if the gods Hawaiians acknowledged.

3. The author lists seven aspects of a human being. This is in error. There are Ten aspects of a human being.

three spirits (Unihipili, Uhane, Aumakua), three aka bodies for the three selves, three voltages of Mana (Mana (used by the Unihipili); Mana mana (used by the Uhane); Mana loa (used by the Aumakua), and the physical body. 3+3+3+1=10

If you are interested in HUNA; I would suggest that you look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars An important work for mystics.......1998-07-01

People who are in the know about the Aquarian Age and the upcoming demands on the psychic advancement of mankind, will find this a great learning manual. Compare these to the works by Hawai`i-based author, Robert B. Stone, _The Power of Miracle Metaphysics_, and _The Magic of Psychotronic Power_, which also involve the reader in activities towards a result: the improvement from within and how to live your life more "deliberately", as Thoreau would have had it... Look at it this way: you could fill your head with TV shows and movies; you could study astronomy or geology for a lifetime; but will these *make you a better person*? Think: How best to spend my precious time on this earth? Watching back-to-back beer and soloflex ads on the tube, or getting your hoo-hah together and moving forward into the future with extra knowledge obtained from vantage points only *you* have traversed? Learn Hawaiian at the same time...the occult parts of a very nature-oriented language that is rife with double-meanings, and within it you will find the secret of your own mind in the beauty of the blossoming of the simple flower. Study, meditate, study, meditate...Malama Pono Mau Loa

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to how the non-verbal mind works........1997-03-07

I picked up this book while browsing the alternative health section of the Rochester Borders Book Store. I had to stand on the little stool to reach the top shelf & found this little volume by accident. I have been studying Daoist meditation and healing methods and found a great similarity in this book in describing the non-verbal holistic "powers" of the mind. In Tai Chi Chuan we say "Where the mind (yi) goes the energy (qi, chi) follows." The key is to relax and stop trying to analyze everything. Let the chit chat in your mind quiet down, drop your expectations and see what happens. You might be surprised at the powerful results

I've just been introduced to Joel Goldsmith recently (not to be confused with Joeseph Goldstein); and the Infinite Way is probably the place to start - short, clear, powerful. No doubt in my mind that the "Infinite Invisible" works through this man. My soul has been stirred.

5 out of 5 stars A review for the ACIM student. .......2005-12-08

The following is a review of THE INFINITE WAY for A COURSE IN MIRACLES students. If you are not then it may not be helpful.

I consider A COURSE IN MIRACLES to be a continuation of Joel S Goldsmith's THE
INFINITE WAY (I am using this as a term for his entire teaching, not just this book). Joel died just months before Helen Schucman began scribing ACIM. I like to think of Joel helping out in some way with A COURSE IN MIRACLES on the other side of the veil. In ACIM, the principles of the Infinite Way are further developed and given depth and sophistication. Of course, this is all my humble opinion.

That said, I got this off of facim.org:

"Q #783: I notice many similarities between A Course in Miracles and The Infinite Way teachings of Joel S. Goldsmith. Would you please comment on this?

A: Because all authentic spiritual teachings are leading in the same direction -- towards an experience of oneness which transcends the false self, the finite ego -- it is very likely that similarities and parallels in content can often be identified between paths. Certainly that can be said for the teachings of Joel S. Goldsmith and A Course in Miracles . Both, for example speak of our real existence as spirit, that the material world is an illusion and the body is merely an idea that expresses what is in the mind, that error or sickness is in the mind and not in the body, and that healing is the result of correcting a false belief in the mind.

And yet there are differences. For example, Joel Goldsmith speaks of God as Consciousness expressing itself. The Course, in contrast, speaks of consciousness as "the first split introduced into the mind after the separation" (T.3.IV.2:1) . The Holy Spirit, the Voice for God in the dream according to the Course, is more nearly equivalent to the concept of Consciousness that Goldsmith refers to in his teachings. In addition, Goldsmith speaks of God as the life, mind, body, and substance of individual being, and of the body as existing as the idea of God. And therefore, we will never be without conscious awareness of the body, nor without the body. The Course, in contrast, views the body as the embodiment of the ego's wish that the separation be real (W.pI.72.2:1,2,3) , and teaches that the body nevertheless can be give a different purpose, that of healing and forgiveness, under the Holy Spirit's guidance. The body then will simply disappear from the mind once its usefulness to the Holy Spirit for healing is complete. And the emphasis of the Course, therefore, on looking at the ego and its thoughts of hatred and attack and guilt, is simply not reflected in Goldsmith's approach.

This is not to say that one is right and the other is wrong -- they are merely different. For as Jesus reminds us near the end of the Course, "A universal theology is impossible, but a universal experience is not only possible but necessary. It is this experience toward which the course is directed" (C.in.2:5,6) . To the extent that both teachings lead us to release all of our preconceptions about how things should be, what our physical and emotional lives should be like, and any effort to control the external to achieve our personal goals, they are both fostering a nonjudgmental acceptance, which is what the Course means by forgiveness. And so both would be leading us toward the same universal experience.

Although addressed to the issue of different teachings on the Course itself, Question #48 provides a helpful perspective on thinking about the relationship of the Course to other spiritual paths, such as Goldsmith's."

The Infinite Way does not have the psychological component of ACIM, yet what it does have is the love of a man whose very presence was a blessing upon this planet.

I came back to Joel's work after being diagnosed with a serious illness and cannot even begin to express in words the healing (that is a rising in consciouness) I am still experiencing, much less the deepening of my work with A Course in Miracles.

5 out of 5 stars The Infinite Teacher.......2005-02-23

The thing about Joel Goldsmith is that once you read one of his books you must read every one of his books. They're addictive in their wisdom. As former Editor of Science of Mind magazine and a spiritual counselor for many years, I've read every Goldsmith book (several times) and quoted them many times. I remember scouring the Bodhi Tree looking for his books years ago when some of them were out of print. Thankfully, all the books are available again. (There are also tapes of his early talks). I lean on the wisdom of The Infinite Way so often that I'd be lost without it. Joel Goldsmith was (and still is) a spiritual giant, always in integrity and prepared to teach us to live a thrilling spiritual life. You'll be so happy to discover this book. Elaine Maginn Sonne, Ph.D., author of 5 books including her latest 'Legends of the Stones'.

5 out of 5 stars An introduction to deeply spiritual material.......2004-07-30

A mystic of rare insight, Joel spent his life teaching people how to attain the spiritual level of consciousness. This title is the introduction to his works.

5 out of 5 stars Great!!!.......2003-12-01

I highly recommend this book. It is considered one of his classic works, setting and excellent basis -- the foundation and principles of the "Infinite Way".

Once you read one of Goldsmith's books, you will find yourself naturally looking at things in life in a different manner, your thoughts, attitudes and responses to life events will begin to change, you will be drawn to read other works by this incredible man. The more of his books that you read, the more the principles he lays out and the essence of the "Christ Consciousness" comes into clearer view and, slowly, more ingrained in your own consciousness. It is no wonder that other reknowned authors of our day, such as Wayne Dyer, refer to Joel Goldsmith's works in their own. This man was evidently a man of great spiritual fortitude, and discipline, insight, wisdom and grace. A Lover of God, a Seeker of the His Kingdom. If these are attributes you are in search off, or in the process of developing in your life -- you'll love this book and it will transport you to another level.

Of an even greater spiritual impact (at least for me) is his: "Man Was Not Born to Cry"!!! (see my review if you are interested).
And for those who may be interested in modern scientific thought(research based)that serves to explain much of what the mystics and spiritual masters have been telling us throughout the ages read: David R. Hawkins: "Power versus Force" - POWERFUL!!! After reading this one you will have to take less "on faith" or "trust", and more "on knowing" -- quite helpful for that part of our brain (left) that tends to inject doubts, or conclude that "Truths" are too lofty, romantic, philosophical and idealistic, but not practical or part of the "real world". See the paradigm shift that has been taking place within modern science. Quite soon the two -- science and spirituality -- may very well end up where they were always intended to be -- in bed with one another, in union and close affiliation, as complements, not adversaries. Enjoy your readings... and journey! God bless!
