Book Description

If only you knew the power of the dark side....

The Force is an all-encompassing energy field generated by all living things. It binds the galaxy together, bringing balance through its two sides. While the light side promotes knowledge and peace, the Force also has a dark side. Anger, fear, and aggression emanate from the dark side, providing a corrupting power to those willing to draw on its destructive nature.

• New dark side classes, skills, and feats
• Advice on running and Gamemastering dark side heroes and villains
• Game statistics for iconic dark side characters from the Star Wars universe
• New prestige classes for dark side characters
• Dark side opponents, creatures, equipment, locations, and adventure hooks
• A history of the dark side, providing advice on how to use this material in any Star Wars era, including the Tales of the Jedi era.

To use this sourcebook, a Gamemaster also needs the Star Wars Roleplaying Game.

Hey men !

Hope that you give me a discount for items due to the lack of buisness.

5 out of 5 stars Is it EVIL?.......2003-05-07

To clear up the confusion of one of the previous reviewers, it should be mentioned that the Dark Side Sourcebook was published *before* the Revised Core Rulebook, and thus uses the older, obsolete ruleset. Fortunately, there is an update file to be found at the Star Wars section of the Wizards of the Coast website that addresses these changes, and brings it in line with the new rules.

That being said, I liked this book back then, and I still like it now. The DSSB really set the stage for the high-quality, full-color, hardcover books that would later become the standard.

I really enjoyed the sections on Dark Side Spirits and Possession, but I think my favorite part was the large selection of Dark Side characters. There is also a wide range of new Dark Side force skills, new feats, mutated beasts, killer droids, and deadly weapons... and not to mention the comprehensive history of the Sith tradition itself, starting from its break with the Jedi Order over 25,000 years prior to the events of the movies.

In short, this is still a solid book, and if you're an evil player, or simply an evil GM, this one is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Generally great, but some embarrassing flaws.......2003-02-02

The Dark Side Sourcebook is largely for a gamemaster who wants to produce serious villains, or for someone who wants to run a Dark Side campaign. It contains all the tools necessary for either of these tasks, including a load of very powerful prestige classes (including the mighty Sith Lord) and jaw-dropping items (including the Sith Talisman and Orbalisk Armor). There is also included the requisite gallery of known baddies, and some monsters that will pose an extreme challenge for even the most powerful heroes.

There are only a few problems with this book. Let's start with the most obvious one: the lack of a sourcebook for the ancient eras where Dark Jedi ran rampant. Most of the prestige classes, items, ships, and individuals mentioned in this book are exclusively available in that time period, so this absence is significant. This can be addressed soon, however, and is not one of the 'embarrassing flaws' I mentioned. The charts for the prestige classes have odd discrepancies in convention that seem to be a halfway point between the original and revised core rulebooks. For example, reputation is either noted as ever-increasing or a series of +1 and +0s, and lightsaber damage is listed as +1d8 +1d8 +1d8 ... +2d8 rather than 'increase lightsaber damage.'

Some other gamemasters might have noticed another interesting problem. The Sith Lord prestige class has 10 levels, but it is impossible to become a 10th level Sith Lord (I'm assuming a 'non-epic' campaign here). The reason for this being that the class requires a reputation of 10, and it is impossible to get that in 10 levels. A more obvious problem is with the Emperor's Hand prestige class, since there can only be one Emperor's Hand. This rather limits the potential of the class, does it not?

Of course, the gamemaster is by no means held to obey the whims of this sourcebook. I simply threw out what I thought was unreasonable and went on with the game. Though I generally found the book to be a worthwhile investment of time and money, it could have been far more satisfying with a bit of improvement in the range of options available. This especially applies to campaigns run in the Rebellion Era which, let's face it, is the only really FUN era to run in!

5 out of 5 stars Putting some light on the Darkside.......2002-07-30

This book, in short, is a must have item for any Game Master. It is loaded with information from the Sith era on up and backed by excellent art and photos. Information only hinted at in the Core rule book is fully explained and new feats and skills aplenty. Further it is not limited to the Sith- Emperor's Hand, and Imperial Guard, to name a couple are detailed. Further a galaxys' worth of NPC's and complete revised stats on your favorite Darksiders from the movies. Nothing is left untouched. The icing on the cake are numerous helpful GM tips on running a Darkside campaign. In close, I would even recommend this book to non-players who are fans of Star Wars, due to the volume of information, photos, and all around great reading.

5 out of 5 stars Sith ROCK!.......2002-07-25

All I have to say is that this is an excellent source for those players wishing to give in to the dark side of the force, and provides detailed statistics and information for GM's wishing to run dark side campaigns and adventures. Well done Wizards of the Coast!

Book Description

There's a time to run and a time to stand....

The Yuuzhan Vong have shattered the New Republic's promise of peace throughout the galaxy. System by system, they bring death and enslavement to all they encounter. Even the Jedi have failed to slow the merciless advance of this dark tide. As this terrible threat from beyond the galaxy's edge pushes closer to Coruscant, the need for great heroes grows ever more dire.

This sourcebook features:
• New prestige classes, feats, species, ships, and starship combat tactics
• New archetypes with statistics for play at low, medium, and high levels
• Rules for the Yuuzhan Vong, including their soldiers and priests, ships, weapons, and equipment
• Action-packed adventure seeds designed for mid- to high-level characters
• Game statistics for characters from The New Jedi Order novels, including Vector Prime, Onslaught, Ruin, Hero's Trial, Jedi Eclipse, Balance Point, Conquest, Rebirth, and Star by Star

To use this sourcebook, you also need the Star Wars Roleplaying Game Revised Core Rulebook.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Rare but worth the search.......2006-05-22

Not only is the art to the same standard of the rest of the series, the extras are a must. The Yuuzhan Vong are described in detail including their unique weapons. Multiple prestige classes and detailed rpg stats of the books are included. Their is no substitute; too bad it is out of print.

1 out of 5 stars Disorganization a major obstacle.......2005-11-28

All content aside, the organization of the book is its biggest flaw. Characters, vehicles and locations are scattered throughout the book, alomst hidden, unless one takes excessive time to scan he index, all of which becomes a hindrance to the flow of any game. Later books have the improved indexes (lesson learned?) that this book sorely needs.

3 out of 5 stars Too small of a book to cover too large of a series- 3½ stars.......2003-08-12

The New Jedi Order has had, like it or hate it, a staggering effect on Star Wars and the Expanded Universe as a whole. Much loved characters have died while the galaxy far, far away has been turned upside down by the extra-galactic invaders known as the Yuuzhan Vong. Much as the Star Wars novel line has been passed from Bantam to Del Rey, so has the role playing game transferred from the now-deceased West End Games to Wizards of the Coast, (No surprise, really. Hasbro Toys owns Wizards and Lucas owns a big chunk of Hasbro). I never liked WEG's D6 take on Star Wars- I always found the 'Bucket-O-Dice' game system pretty unheroic and inflexible. On the other hand, I much prefer D20- it works quite well in the Star Wars milieu largely because it was developed for Dungeons & Dragons, which is super heroic adventuring and that suits Star Wars to a T.

However, regardless of what I thought of the WEG game mechanics, their source material was always first rate (kinda like Shadowrun- lousy game system, great source books), especially the source books released for the various novels and comics, such as the Thrawn Trilogy, Dark Empire, or the Tales of the Jedi Companion. Conversely, Wizards of the Coast seems to have a different philosophy regarding their Star Wars source books. On the one hand, Truce at Bakura was a single book that got its own hard cover from WEG, meanwhile Wizard's gives us one hard cover that encompasses nine books of the New Jedi Order. While it may not have been feasible to do nine books, it does seem a lot of information to distill down into one 160 page book. Plus the West End Games material the had the benefit of being written, in many cases, by authors who wrote the initial novels, often adding more detail and background. A huge bonus considering that many of these books were also bought by people who didn't play the game at all.

Basically, the New Jedi Order Source Book breaks down the nine books, (Vector Prime, Onslaught, Ruin, Hero's Trial, Jedi Eclipse, Balance Point, Conquest, Rebirth and Star by Star) in chapters that includes new characters, planets, vehicles and equipment. The first part of the book details the Yuuzhan Vong, their religion, and the vast majority of their personal gear. Each chapter also includes a small star map to show the current progress of the Vong's invasion route. Also included are some adventure hooks to get a player group into the action. Plus a few minor (and very poor quality) maps- something I have already had a talk with Dan Wallace about. The book does give an excellent overview of the series, but lacks any real meat and could have benefitted from input from the authors to flesh out places, events, and characters.

I also want to spend some time talking about the art that appears through out the book. It goes beyond just being bad or even terrible- it's putrid. It certainly doesn't feel like it belongs in a Star Wars book- of any kind. It seems better suited to a Vampire: the Masquerade or just about anything else by White Wolf. The only good images are by RK Post (Essential Guide to Alien Species), and even his picture of the voxyn Jedi Hunter is messed up, because when he first drew it, he thought it only had four legs instead of six so he had to go back and touch up the image. For the most part, though, the graphics and picture are on the lousy-side of awful.

On the whole, though, I like the source book- the stats for the Yuuzhan Vong are great and I suppose if I had worked at it I could have done it all myself, but with this it means I don't have to. It appears though that Wizards will continue the trend of publishing one book that covers large amounts of information like the Rebellion Era source book, Coruscant and the Core Worlds- Coruscant deserves it's own book, not 16 or so pages in a book with other worlds. I'll be interested to see if WotC will release a second NJO book that covers the last half of the series or simply double the size of the existing book and simply add new information.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for any NJO campaign........2002-05-07

If you are planning on running a SWRPG campaign set in the New Jedi Order era, this sourcebook is the one accessory you must have. Chapter One starts off with a broad overview of the galactic situation just prior to the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, and then goes right into a detailed description of the YV and their culture, along with a new-and-improved list of YV equipment. Chapters Two through Seven each detail a specific novel, starting with Vector Prime and ending with Star By Star. Chapter Eight contains an epilogue and hints at some possible future events. At appropriate points throughout the books there are character profiles, new ships, new vehicles and animals, and even a handful of new weapons. I found the character profiles to be especially useful, particularly those of famous people like Corran Horn and Kyp Durron. In addition, the characters from the core rulebook have "leveled up" to show their increased experience. Very helpful. And no, the majority of the NPCs *do not* die.

Like all of Wizard's Star Wars products, the book itself is full color throughout. The artwork is high-quality and has a dark and stylistic touch. Some people won't like that, claiming that it isn't "Star Wars," but I say that it is appropriate for the NJO universe.

I stopped reading the Star Wars novels a long time ago because there are too darn many to keep track of. As a GM myself, and as a NJO newbie, the main thing I liked about the NJO sourcebook is that it neatly compressed all the major events from these six novels into one book. The writing is clear, concise, and most importantly I found it fun to read. I immediately felt that I had enough information to begin building a NJO campaign. The book has a lot of adventure ideas and even a few rough adventure outlines which any GM worth his salt can integrate into his campaign.

Is the book perfect? Certainly not. My biggest gripe is the lack of an alphabetical index. This would nearly cripple the book if its other qualities hadn't been so good. Fortunately, there is a chapter summary at the beginning of the book, which partially alleviates the lack of an index. Chances are you're still going to have to go searching for those obscure entries though. The other issue is that since this book was released just prior to the release of the Revised Core Rulebook, you may need to do some tinkering to integrate the two. However, that is ultimately a minor issue in my opinion.

Overall, I give this book a very strong 4 out of 5 because of the lack of an index.

As a side note, the prior claim that a GM would be better served by spending 10 minutes reading the backs of the novels seems to be quite ill-advised, if not impossible. If you are a GM wanting to run a NJO campaign, GET THIS BOOK. And may it help you as much as it helped me.

EDIT: My gaming group, which meets twice a month, is now 8 sessions into our NJO campaign. As GM, I can honestly say that in that time, the NJO sourcebook has continued to be an invaluable resource. After much consideration, I have decided to raise the book's rating to a 5. This is both for the book's continuing usefulness and because I feel that the previous poster's rating of 1 flies in the face of reason.

1 out of 5 stars Recycled Novels without the talent of the original authors.........2002-03-28

This book represents the worst thing I have seen WoTC ever put out, and JD Wiker should be ashamed of himself.

This "sheep in wolf's clothing" sourcebook is a 159 pg. dustcover summary of 9 novels by excellent authors, punctuated by anemic and careless adventurettes and RPG stats for NPCs, 80% of which are introduced shortly before their death.

Other Wizards products have shown brilliance in the rich tapestry of their provided surroundings, providing GMs with a host of wonderful information from which to enchant their players, entertain readers and delight the curious.

In this unfortunate case, all of the wealth of possible information in this book is lost behind the stilted attention to the storyline of the novels, which ends up, in this abbreviated format, coming across like a poorly intellectualized soap opera script. An interested party would be better served by taking 10 minutes in a bookstore and reading the backs of the novels ostensibly plagiarized in this poor offering.

I hope that the abhorrent failings of this book can be directly tied to some legal requirement of Lucasfilm restricting creative freedoms surrounding its intellectual property, if not, WoTC should take a serious look at what disservice they are doing to long-time players and GMs with this sort of tripe.

If you're a nut for the facts and figures behind Star Wars stories - like I am - and if you reckon Dark Empire is the best-ever Star Wars story outside of the films - like I do! - you can't go past West End Games' Dark Empire Sourcebook. It's the perfect companion to the Dark Horse Comics series, profiling the humans, aliens, planets and technology that appear in it. While it's primarily intended as a resource for the Dark Empire roleplaying game, non-gamers will get just as much satisfaction out of the fascinating in-depth information. To top off a fine compendium, full-colour glossy pages showcase Dave Dorman's stunning cover art from the comic series. Buy - there is no try!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A view from the gallery.......2005-01-17

The "Power of the Force" book by Wizards of the Coast is one of the most complete indexs of the force put out by either West End Games (the privous owners of the Star Wars RPG franchise) or Wizards to date. It has a number of stats of characters that have made up the esteemed order along with additional jedi powers, feats, equipment and so forth. Another great feature of this book is that it also has stats on such jedi's like Kit Fisto, the Gray Lady, as well as updated stats on Mace Windu.

The book also shows some of the other functions of the Jedi Order and some races also view it. I only wished that it had come out after the Knights of the Old Republic game so that the Jedi Sentinal PrC could've been included but then again, that's just me.

Other than a few minor issues with the rules, Power of the Force is a great book to own and a *MUST* if you play a jedi in any era of Star Wars.

5 out of 5 stars Necessary Jedi resource.......2004-12-31

To be frank, the Jedi classes offered in the Core Rulebook just aren't that cool. You can be a Guardian (typical butt-kicking Jedi saber-warrior) or a Consular (Princess Leia-ish diplomat type that shuns violence). The two prestige classes (aside from master, which of course is always cool) are interesting, but not that great. Additionally, there's little guidance on how to handle Force Spirits, which you would think is an important Jedi aspect.

Power of the Jedi remedies all of these deficiencies, adding several prestige classes that are both interesting and useful (e.g. the Jedi Healer and Weapon Master), additional light side feats and skills (including Battle Meditation and Cure Disease/Poison), and rules for managing a Jedi campaign and Jedi characters- including Force Spirits. There's also a section on Jedi equipment, including some older Jedi starships and specialized lightsabers (including the dual-phase and great saber), additional species, nasty force-wielding monsters, and a description of Jedi history and famous Jedi. The latter is particularly extensive, and includes descriptions and maps of some famous Jedi sites (e.g. the Chu'unthor).

The volume is hardcover, which largely explains the cost, and includes numerous and excellent illustrations- many of which are actual art instead of just more film captures.

If you are planning on running a Jedi campaign, or even have any light side Jedi players in a non-Force oriented campaign, this supplement is critical. I can't overstate how much depth and material it adds to the Jedi character in this game.

4 out of 5 stars The Jedi's Handbook.......2003-05-08

The Power of the Jedi Sourcebook is a full-color, hardcover resource for all things pertaining to the Jedi Order. Continuing from the standard set by the Dark Side Sourcebook, the "PotJ" book combines information and utility with a tasteful arrangement of interior artwork and photos.

Most players will probably be most interested in the selection of new Jedi Prestige Classes, Light Side Force skills, feats, and equipment that the book offers. But there are also sections discussing Jedi history, Jedi traditions, new equipment, and new force-sensitive creatures. There are entries on important characters, important locations, and even advice on how to run a Jedi campaign. And of course, no book on the Jedi would be complete without a discussion of Force Spirits. This is also a section discussing new races, but most of these are also in the newer Ultimate Alien Anthology.

This book has been one of the important resources in my Star Wars campaign. I've really enjoyed using the Prestige Classes. From the Jedi Healer to the powerful Jedi Weapon Master, players now have a much wider range of advancement options open to their characters. In addition many of the force-sensitive characters, creatures, and locations have already popped up in my storyline. I also found the notes on running a Jedi campaign to be very useful, for not only can they guide a GM but they can also aid players on how a Jedi should conduct himself.

However, I do have a few minor complaints. A few of the Light Side force skills, particularly Force Light and Sever Force, seem to be quite powerful. Perhaps this is because they were based on the abilities of comic-book characters, but in any case, it was a wise move that such skills may only be acquired with GM approval. I would have also preferred to see a much more in-depth history section, particularly as it pertains to the Tales of the Jedi storyline. Finally, I felt that the maps for some of the important locations were fairly inadequate.

However, as I noted earlier, these were minor complaints.

Overall, I found this to be an outstanding addition to my Star Wars campaign. I use it often, and it is likely that I will continue to do so for some time to come. Whether you're the GM of a campaign with Jedi in it, or whether you're a player wanting to explore the possibilities of a Jedi character, I'd recommend this book as a solid investment.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for SW RPG.......2003-03-27

If you have the Core Rulebook, this supplement is a must. It contains lots of info on the jedi and lots of great stuff about the types of jedi you can play with prestige classes and all. Being a Jedi is what Star Wars is made of, so this book is a must if you want your adventure of RPG to be complete.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2002-11-13

This is a must have for all Star Wars roleplayers. It has a huge amount of new stuff for playing as a jedi. An EXTREMELY helpful addition.

3 out of 5 stars Bottom Line -- It's not bad.......2007-09-02

I bought this book a few months ago, figuring it would make a perfect addition to my old-school WEG Star Wars RPG collection (1st edition of course, the ONLY edition worth buying, in my opinion).

Anyway, the book was, sadly, slightly disappointing. It mostly deals with military unit types, like rebel commandos and the like, along with military structure/rankings, equipment (none of which is particularly interesting or creative), and the like.

It definitely doesn't ring with the "magic" of Star Wars the way you might be hoping, but it's not terrible either. I gave it a 3 out of 5.

1 out of 5 stars GET THE COMPANION.......1999-08-25

There was some good information in it, but it was hidden buy too much tiresome, useless information. The book was a slow-progressing one. The book was no fun. It was all work and no play. There were no color pictures, no jokes, none of the flare that the Starwars Roleplaying Book had. It was bland.

      Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Rebellion Era Sourcebook.......2003-07-07

This book is good for someone who has just started the
exploration of the Star Wars Universe. If you read all
books and internet SW-pages you will find Rebellion Era
Sourcebook very boring and poor. Many details from Expanded
Universe were just ignored .Also the quality of photographs
is terryfying.Hard SW fans should avoid this book.Only
the cover is good in that product.

5 out of 5 stars Gamemaster material mostly.......2002-09-26

This is a great buy if you plan on gamemastering Star Wars, great info, great ideas for plot and very nice visuals, but people who do not plan on gamemastering wont benefit as much, since the era notes and information on the star wars universe is so readily available from other sources, unless you live out of the U.S. and such information is scarce to begin with, but still i think it is a gamemaster tool.

      5 out of 5 stars Very good!.......2002-03-03

This book eplains so many things about the classic trilogy, even little details and other things that I couldn't even imagine existed inside star wars world. You can read lots of pages and there's only pure information instead of thousands of rules. I would like this title even if I wasn't a RPG player, just because of the amout of information this book brings to it's owner's hand. Long live to the Rebellion!

5 out of 5 stars Best Supplement to Date.......2001-12-31

The Rebellion Era Sourcebook is the first hard cover supplement from Wizards of the Coast since their release of their version of the role playing game. It should not be confused with the West End Games Rebel Alliance Sourcebook as just being the regurgitation of the same information in a different book, it isn't. The Rebel Alliance book is a breakdown of the Rebellion, major players, vehicles, vessels, tactics and history, whereas the new book is a survey of the time period from A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi, with Shadows of the Empire, Truce at Bakura, plus it includes data on Emperor's Hands- background for the Thrawn trilogy.

Each section is laid out under the time period it covers- A New Hope outlines how the Empire came into being and the New Order, the beginnings of the Rebellion by Mon Mothma, Bail Organa and Garm Bel-Iblis. It briefly covers the anti-alien sentiment held by the Empire, the Death Star (no stats, however, but if they are needed, it can be generated). It also has stats for all the major character, (and some minor ones like Tarkin and Lemelisk- the man who designed the Death Star). It does quite a good job in explaining events, concepts, and has loads of additional data, Game Master hints and ideas, plus flowing through the book along side the general data are mini adventures for players.

The Dark Time section covers events from the Battle of Yavin up to the Empire Strikes Back, detailing Imperial intelligence, propaganda, supply fleets, Alliance bases, bounty hunters, the Corporate Sector, Kessel, and the Prophets of the Dark Side. The Empire Strikes Back is mostly character data, with key events described, but also includes probe droids, AT-ATs, Imperial and Alliance forces of the time, Vader's fleet, but no stats for the Super Star Destroyer. More bounty hunters, Dagobah, and the Dark Trooper project from the first Dark Forces PC game- sadly, almost no mention of Kyle Katarn or Jan Ors.

Shadows of the Empire (a book I have yet to read) covers the period immediately after The Empire Strikes Back, the creation of Rogue Squadron, Bothans and their SpyNet, Coruscant, Prince Xizor and the Black Sun syndicate, however no mention is made of Dash Render or his Outrider. I suspect Wizards might be planning a separate, more detailed Shadows of the Empire book. Finally, the last section is of course Return of the Jedi and they wasted nearly five pages on Ewoks! When will people learn that no one likes the furry little buggers? It ends leading into final main character updates and the New Republic Era and the Ssi-Ruu.

A solid piece of work in full color. Lots of stills from the movies, and some top notch art as well, including a great picture of Xizor. Once again, however, the book fails to provide anything but mediocre low-detail and very small maps. A minor gripe, but one that I hope Wizard's addresses soon. Beyond that, this is great book. Granted, most people who have played the game under the West End rules and have read some of the novels, would know most of the information, but it's all here in one volume- very neatly laid out, clean, clear and to the point. I suspect that Wizards will produce sourcebooks for both the Rebel Alliance and the Empire, until then, there is this book, and a good book it is.

4 out of 5 stars Odd set-up detracts from otherwise great book.......2001-10-23

Now, maybe you like having a sidebar at the bottom of almost every page that doesn't directly relate to that page. Some of the time I didn't mind it so much.
But when some of the sidebars go on for several pages, it's quite annoying. WotC may have been better off grouping these lengthy sidebars onto their own pages for easier reading. Such as the case with some of the adventure hooks that span four, five or more pages.
Other than that, this is a great sourcebook. You get coverage of all 3 movies, including charcters, ships, planets and a little beyond. The Ssi-ruk from Truce at Bakura and many of the characters from Shadows of the Empire.
Of course, not much new info is presented on the more well-known characters, but there's been so much written about them, it wasn't really expected. As usual, the place where books like this shine is the amount of info they provide on the backrgound players of the Star Wars galaxy.
