Buen libro.......2007-08-09
Lo que he podido leer deja ver que es un libro muy interesante que maneja los temas de una manera muy cercana a la realidad
Only an average Reliability Text. .......2007-01-10
Heavy Electrical / Electronic focus. I only bought it because it was the required text for a Graduate Course, but hardly used it as I have other Reliability Engeineering texts (Modarres) which cover much of the same material in far more detail and with more clairity. I would only buy it if studying a course which closesly follows this text, otherwise, I would keep looking.
An excellent overview of reliability science and engineering.......2007-01-09
This book contains an excellent treatment of the mathematics for reliability analysis and prediction. It also has numerous, excellent examples that are particularly relevant to the Electronics Industry. I strongly would recommend this book to anyone involved in the instruction of Design for Six Sigma.
Must read!.......2006-10-26
This book is very well written for a subject as wide as reliability engineering. I enjoyed all the chapters in this book other than software reliability which I did not read. This book also forms a good reference for ASQ CRE examination. However if you want to read in depth on any of the chapters covered, I will recommend relevent industry standards (like IEEE, MIL etc). This book in most cases will give an excellent start.
This book is a table of contents for further reading........2005-01-31
This is a great first book on the subject of reliability. Every reliability engineer should have a copy as well as engineering managers concerned about warranty costs. But the other reviewers wrote much the same. I have used this book even further.
I often refer to this book to get grounded on a point. It is a work that takes me to the answers I need quickly and then points to other experts via the many references at the end of each chapter. I have several copies and use the fourth edition now. I have reliability engineers who report to me and this book, among a few others, are what I require each staff member to obtain and become familiar with as part of their overall knowledge base.
A few years ago I wrote a book on improving product reliability with a colleague and we used the references a great deal to do our research work. This is not just a reliability book; it is a table of contents of the world of reliability.
Book Description
Several distinctives set this volume apart from other introductions to the Old Testament: - It is thoroughly evangelical in its perspective. - It emphasizes "special introduction" -- the study of individual books. -It interacts in an irenic spirit with the historical-critical method. - It features high points of research history and representative scholars rather than an exhaustive treatment of past scholarship. - It deals with the meaning of each book, not in isolation but in a canonical context. - It probes the meaning of each book in the setting of its culture. With an eye on understanding the nature of the Old Testament historiography, An Introduction to the Old Testament offers the reader a solid understanding of three key issues: historical background, literary analysis, and theological message.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent concise overview.......2007-08-02
Professor's Dillard and Longman's Introduction to the Old Testament is an outstanding resource for understanding the literary, theological, and historical background of every Old Testament book. It is evangelical in its perspective, yet interacts with historical - cricial methods of interpretation that have been prominent over the past 100 + years or so.
A typical overview of each Old Testament book will start with an overview, useful commentaries and articles for each book, the historical background (date, author, and purpose), a literary analysis of the structure of the book, its theological message and how it applies to the New Testament.
The reader of the book will find an outstanding reference book for understanding and studying the individual books of the Old Testament. A real strength of this book is its description of the literary style of a book and what that means for the reader. Yet, the authors warn wisely that while it is important to take into account the book's literary context for the reader, the importance of understanding a particular Old Testament book, the importance of placing literary context within the historical context is paramount.
The authors make solid use of previous scholarship in their introductions for each book, even wisely dividing what is useful from the neo-orthodox and critical scholars and what is not.
This reference book will be of great use to ministers, lay teachers and the general student of the Bible.
Excellent Book.......2007-03-08
This is an excellent book for those who are studying the Old Testament.
Concise and Scholarly!.......2006-10-30
This volume should be in every serious student of the OT library. Pastors especially should delve into this concise yet reasonable volume.
I highly recommend this volume.
Brief summary .......2006-01-31
An excellent, informative overview of cursory introductory matters. OT introduction is quite a mindfield; however, Dillard and Longmand present a well-informed discussion. It is brief often on issues of dating and authorship, which makes this an excellent "first grab" off the shelf when a question arises. The volume is probably worth double its asking price for the literary analysis. This volume takes into account literary compentency and provides genre discussion (thanks to the illustrious Tremper Longman's coauthorship). All in all each student of the Bible needs a basic OT introduction; this is an excellent choice for the reader of today.
A new spin on intro's.......2003-12-18
I was much pleased when I bought this intro to the Old Testament. In short, Dillard and Longman have done the church and teh believing community a great service by providing a scholarly and evangelical introduction that is not afraid to tackle the hard questions of the Bible.
They divide each section of the introduction into Historical/literary/Theological message/Approaching the New Testament. As to one reviewer commenting that this is very biased, I actually think that this was quite objective. Longman analyzes the prevailing critics presuppositions and then provides a logical counterpart. And also, they are (while remaining robustly evangelical) more balanced in their conclusion than other evangelical scholars (cf. Gleason Archer for a passionate, well written, if a little biased example).
In my eyes, this books greatezt strengths were its incorporating the theological message and approaching the New Testament into each book. The Bible then comes alive. Its weakness is similar to many other scholarly works, it could get overly teachnical at times. Overall, a well organized intro.
Book Description
Testing is usually the most expensive, time-consuming and difficult activity during the development of engineering products and systems. Development testing must be performed to ensure that designs meet requirements for performance, safety, durability, reliability, statutory aspects, etc. Most manufactured items must be tested to ensure that they are correctly made. However, much of the testing that is performed in industry is based upon traditions, standards and procedures that do not provide the optimum balance of assurance versus cost and time. There is often pressure to reduce testing because of the high costs involved, without appreciation of the effects on performance, reliability. etc. Misperceptions are commonplace, particularly the idea that tests should not stress products in excess of their operating levels.
The main reason for this situation seems to be that engineers have not developed a consistent philosophy and methodology for testing. Testing is seldom taught as part of engineering curricula, and there are no books on the subject. Specialist areas are taught, for example fatigue testing to mechanical engineers and digital device testing to electronics engineers. However, a wide range is untaught, particularly multidisciplinary and systems aspects. Testing is not just an engineering issue. Because of the importance and magnitude of the economic and business aspects testing is an issue for management. Testing is perceived as a high cost activity, when it should be considered as a value-adding process.
The objective of this book is, therefore, to propose a philosophy of engineering test and to describe the necessary technologies and methods that will provide a foundation for all plans, methods and decisions related to testing of engineered products and systems. The book will help those who must manage and conduct this most difficult and uncertain task. It will also provide a text which can be used as the basis for teaching the principles of testing to all engineering students.

Critial information.......2002-07-23
It is the very first book (that I'm aware of) written for test engineers and managers. This book is an overview of all types of testing.
The author's philosophy is excellent.....
"The author has never found a company or a project where it was considered in retrospect by those involved that too much was spent on a development test programme." Test Engineering by Patrick D. T. O'Connor.
When you consider that Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, the Comet IV and the Challenger failed not because of negligence, but because critical data slipped through the cracks, or was misinterpreted, this book may just prevent that next tragic unknown from taking place. Or at least arm engineers, and managers, as to what is taking place.
Highly recommended, from one in the business.
A survey of test methods.......2002-01-21
I bought this book seeking practical information relating to testing of manufactured PCB assemblies. I found relatively little information on that subject, and the information I did find was of a general nature.
I got the impression that if you are interested in a survey of issues dealing with mechnaical failures, you might find more to like in this book.
Book Description
Presents a study of the Old Testament by interweaving historical, archeological, literary, and religious perspectives. The book traces the story of the people of Israel from the Exodus in the time of Moses through the dawn of the Common Era.
It considers the importance of literary criticism and other methods for understanding the literature of ancient Israel; treats the latest archaeological discoveries that illuminate the Old Testament period.

Understanding the Old Testament Abridged 4th edition.......2007-01-05
I'm enjoying the read. It is slow because of the references to Bible passages, so have your Bible handy unless you have it memorized.
I would recommend this book for anyone who wishes to get the real connection between the Old and New Testaments.
Understanding the Old Testament.......2005-10-17
This is an invaluable guide to assist in understanding the Old Testament. The author provides important historical background to help the reader understand what the original authors/compilers were trying to say. I am currently using this text for my 1st year Education for Ministry class.
Excellent Read!.......2005-10-11
I have had a copy of the 3rd edition, which I have found truly helpful in understanding the OT in the context of the faith of the people. The material added in this edition makes the text even more useful. I highly recommend this to any serious student of the Bible.
Fleshes out the Bible.......2001-05-29
No question the Old Testament is a great read, but face it, the original audience for this work is long dead and buried. Anderson's standard text on the world of the Old Testament is excellent in bringing the ancient world and the context for the collection that is the Old Testament to light. Reading the Bible without Anderson you get a story about some guy named Abram who took a walk one day and had some trouble with his new neighors. Reading it with Anderson, you get a deeper understanding of where Abraham came from, where he was headed, and how the belief of early Judahism developed through and in conflict with those of the neighboring Canaanites. The agrarian focused religion of the Canaanites get's it's own hearing as a people's attempt to make sense of the life around them. "Understanding the Old Testament" then provides this level of insight and background for all the other books of the Old Testament. How and why we now have the expression of the Jewish people's understanding of God gains more texuture and depth.
Fascinating insights on ancient biblical events!.......1999-11-19
An amazing, descriptive, objective, factual read about the beliefs, people and events that went on in ancient biblical times. Some great pictures too! I was captivated and fascinated!
Book Description
This book deals with Sir Isaac Newton's Judaic studies and their impact on his theology. After examining what Jewish sources Newton read, the author explains how ideas Newton learned from Jewish history and literature found their way into his understanding of ancient religion, scriptural prophecy, the Temple of Jerusalem, the ancient church, and the corruption of Christianity. This investigation sheds new light on many aspects of newton's thought.

Strong meat for men of full age.......1998-09-01
This academic work is not only palatable, it's delicious. I devoured it! Goldish has gone to great lengths to make his work accessible to those of us mortals who are not quite as well read in 17th century Hebraism. Goldish finally gives us a good strong look at Newton's lost work, Of the Church. The same mind that unlocked the riddles of our physical universe made great pains to unlock the riddles of the spiritual kind. All told, an exciting addition to an excellent series.
Book Description
Some people use sex to medicate their feelings and/or cope with stress much in the same way as others would use alcohol or drugs. Lack of sexual self-control can manfest in the form of excessive use of porn sites, phone sex, and strip bars; it can lead to multiple infidelities, risky sexual behavior, bankruptcy, or the loss of a job due to their out of control behaviors. Rooted in shame and low self-esteem, there is little satisfaction gained from the sexual activites and rarely an interest in intimacy or emotional connection. This book addresses readers with a lack of sexual self-control where their behavior is interfering with their relationhip, job, and reputation.
The authors guide the readers as they assess their level of sexual-self control problems, teaching relapse prevention methods and helping readers increase motivation and commitment to change. Readers then set goals and assess their choices. The second section of the book delves into the cognitive restructuring necessary to produce change, helping readers examine their behaviors, decision-making process, cognitive distortions (need for immediate gratification, deviant sexual fantasizing). In the third section, readers deal with their the impact of their emotions on their behaviors and lead them toward self-acceptance. Finally, readers learn to increase intimacy and live a more balanced life.

therapist's helper.......2007-08-23
I, as a therapist who works with folks who have sexual addictions, have found this book to be a good resource to supplement the work we do together in sessions. It is well written and seems to address the issues in a gentle manner, allowing clients to work at a comfortable pace.

Very Helpful .......2007-01-10
As a pastoral counselor I found this book useful in getting in touch with core basics and how to methodically move through them. I have now used this book with 2 clients and have purchased the last one for a good friend who is struggling with his addictions to pornography. The authors show good insight into the realm of sex addiction and how to pull through it.
Empirically grounded and very useful.......2004-10-13
I believe this book represents the best kind of clinical psychology. It is well grounded in research and empirical knowledge, but is also written in such a way as to be useful for people who are not. It focuses not just on the dos and don'ts, but on the whys as well. I think it will be useful for therapists to use with their clients, as well as for people who don't have (or don't want) a therapist.
I am a professor of clinical psychology and I will use this when supervising students who are working with clients dealing with these sexual issues.
There is a need for this kind of text and I believe the authors have a great method for intervention.
Sound research and good practice.......2004-10-06
I am a professor of clinical psychology with over 150 publications primarily on some aspects of sexual offending and 15 years experience working with sexual offenders. I have also edited several books and authored two others on the explanation, assessment, and treatment of sexual offenders. In my view this is an outstanding publication which manages to combine excellent scholarship with sound practical advice for individuals with sexual disorders. It is written in a clear and straight forward manner and I think will engage offenders in the process of learning to manage their destructive actions and turning their lives around. It should prove useful as an adjunct resource for therapists and also provide individuals reluctant to seek therapy with some valuable strategies for controlling their sexually deviant behavior. This is an excellent addition to the treatment literature.

A Practical Guide for People with a Sexual Addiction.......2004-09-29
This book offers guidance for individuals who struggle with an addiction to sex. It is written in a practical, often entertaining, and always enlightening way. It can be used on its own or in conjunction with psychotherapy. I wish I had had this book in the past as an adjunct to conducting psychotherapy with my patients who have had such problems. I will be sure to use it with patients in the future.
Book Description
Lucidly written by a leading biblical scholar, this balanced, engaging, and up-to-date introduction to the Hebrew scriptures distills the best of current scholarship. Employing the narrative chronology of the Bible itself and the history of the ancient Near East as a framework, author Michael D. Coogan covers all the books of the Hebrew Bible, along with the deuterocanonical books included in the Bible used by many Christians. He treats every book of the canon with careful attention to its historical context, its particular genre, and its distinctive features. Dealing in detail with ancient Near Eastern sources and archaeological data, Coogan works from a primarily historical and critical methodology but also introduces readers to literary analysis and other interpretive strategies, especially current ones. The Old Testament: A Historical and Literary Introduction to the Hebrew Scriptures is enhanced by a glossary, timelines, photos, illustrations, maps, and a four-color insert on Jerusalem in biblical times. Strategically placed boxes address issues that often puzzle readers of the Bible, provide models of interpretation of particular texts, and discuss their significance for Judaism and Christianity. Each chapter includes key terms, questions for review and discussion, and suggestions for further reading. Providing a non-denominational and non-doctrinal treatment, The Old Testament is accessible to students of all backgrounds. It offers a unique and captivating introduction to the Hebrew scriptures themselves and to how they have been--and can be--interpreted.
Customer Reviews:
Great Resource.......2007-08-31
I ordered this book for a Scripture course I will be taking. It is lavish and informative; like a small encyclopedia, actually.Coogan is known for readable work and in-depth scholarship. I heartily recommend this book.
Easy to read and full of good information.......2006-11-09
Coogan has assembled in one place an easy read and fact filled guide to Hebrew Scriptures. The resource is well organized in its approach to Hebrew Scripture and contains historical background material not found else where. A must for any serious scholar interested in studying Hebrew Scripture and knowing more about the historical times of the Hebrew Scriptures.
Modern, balanced, informative, attractive.......2006-01-25
Coogan is one of the leading Bible experts, a co-editor of the Oxford Bible Dictionary with Metzger. His point of view is balanced, educated, a "real teacher's" approach.
The "Old Testament" book is a nicely done textbook. The maps reflect accurately the book discussion, the diagrams are clear and not very crowded, and the references at the end of each chapter are the best starting points for further exploration of specific topics. As the title indicates, this is an introduction (read: university freshman/sophomore level) to the history of the Old Testament, with an equal discussion of the literary merits of the book(s). The book can easily be read on one's own, because it is clearly written, and well organized. The chapters of the book are set up "historically", and there is an excellent discussion of the actual history/archaeology matching the Old Testament texts. The archaeological support for the Old Testament is superb; it makes you see the OT from a deeper, different perspective. I especially liked the fact that the book is balanced, and does not "interpret" theological points (that's up to each reader, I think).
The book is also very attractive, the print size reads very easily. To get the most out of the book, one would probably need a modern Old Testament translation (the Oxford NRSV with the Apocrypha would be ideal, or the Harper/Collins edition). I can easily see the book becoming a standard university textbook, just like Ehrman's New Testament textbook.
As much as I liked reading the book, I would love having a few more appendices. For example, a (brief) discussion of the Septuagint, possibly some commentary/interpretation from rabbinic sources, possibly discussion of the Qumran texts.
Coogan is a Winner!.......2005-12-15
Michael Coogan writes well and delivers the story of the Hebrew Bible with a good balance. He shows in clear language how to understand this text and the contribution of scholars of all traditions in this understanding. The introduction is very straight forward. The layout is very attractive. Pertinent illustrations show the connection of modern scholarship to our understanding of the text. The appendix on the canon is very clear and concise. This is an exciting read for anyone. This is the best introduction available for students of the Hebrew Bible.
Book Description
Following the overall structure of the highly successful Basics of Biblical Greek, this course focuses on biblical Hebrew. With the help of an accompanying CD-ROM, this text emphasizes the structural pattern of the language and minimizes rote memorization.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Hebrew Textbook.......2007-05-21
When I first learned Hebrew, some years ago now, I used two different textbooks (Harper and Eaton). I now teach introductory Biblical Hebrew and for several years used the classic text by Weingreen. The advantages of Weingreen are its comprehensiveness, conciseness and copious exercises. But it also has some serious pedagogical weaknesses, as is only to be expected in a book last revised in 1959. For example, important concepts are sometimes explained too briefly and others not at all. I thought I would try a new approach and use Basics of Biblical Hebrew. I am glad I did. The book's emphasis on `diagnostics', rather than on rote learning of paradigms, might not appeal to purists. But the point is it works. By the end of one year of study the students had a much firmer grasp of the language and could explain verbal forms with greater confidence than I had experienced before. Without exception every student in the class, of whatever ability, rated the book as excellent. When I taught an advanced class to students who had used another textbook at introductory level, several bought Basics of Biblical Hebrew to clarify points only partly mastered before. All agreed that the book is a model of clarity. The accompanying workbook gives numerous graded exercises. The accompanying CD could be more user-friendly. But it's not essential. The textbook and workbook stand by themselves. For teachers, however, the numerous overheads on the CD are a tremendous help for teaching a group in class. If you're not of an evangelical disposition, some of the exegetical observations at the end of chapters might irritate you - but these can be skipped over entirely. So, the CD aside, this is a five star textbook.
Loving It!.......2007-03-19
Most say that Hebrew is easy than Greek. Let's say that this volume is confirming that. After doing my grad. work in Greek, I find this statement to be true.
This volume is vary user-friendly. As noted, it is built on the tradition of Mounce's Grammar, in fact, he has helped on this.
Get this Hebrew Grammar, if you are getting started!
Good beginner grammar.......2007-02-22
I'm beginning to see why my seminary professor is using this grammar over Seow (more technical) despite using the traditional teaching model of Imperfect, Perfect, and Waw Conversive, with which the professor disagreed. The text is practical and very useful, especially with the accompanying workbook for homework.
One of the best parts of the book for me is the end of each chapter where a scholar or pastor (mostly connected with Gordon-Conwell) exegetes a particular word that relates to the chapter and gives an insight based on the Hebrew language.
Not for beginners, but excellent for reference for the advanced student........2007-02-21
The other reviewers have basically made the most important points. I will only add a couple more points.
1. IMHO, this book is not for beginners. If you're first learning to read Biblical Hebrew, then I would recommend using a book that is considered a Hebrew primer, and not this book. After studying the primer, then you can use this book, but I would probably recommend Page H. Kelly's "Biblical Hebrew: An introductory Grammar" or Thomas O. Lambdin's "Intro to Biblical Hebrew" over this book for those who are still in their first year of Biblical Hebrew study.
2. This book is more designed with it's lay out for those who already have experience in Hebrew, and it's even better designed for those who have 1+ year of Hebrew under their belt, and can make great use of this book as a basic reference book. For those of you who have studied Hebrew for more than a couple of years and have seen this book, you know what I mean.
3. If you get this book, I recommend getting the workbook along with it, as you will need plenty of reading practice to apply the rules of Grammar presented in this book.
4. Something else that should be noted is the pronunciation used in this book is NOT Sephardic (the main modern dialect of pronunciation in Israel tody), but rather the pronuciation introduced in this volume is that of "old Hebrew", and more closely resembles Aramaic than Hebrew.
In case if anyone is wondering, I gave this book 3 stars only because it's being presented as a guide for beginners at Hebrew, when in reality this book can be cumbersome for the beginning student of Hebrew.
Wonderful!.......2007-01-10
I don't know much about other grammars. This is the first I've used by I think that it is very easy to use for a beginning Hebrew student and for the reference of a more advanced scholar. Well-organized, accurate, etc.

Book Description
This classic textbook, widely used for over two decades, constructs a history of ancient Israel and Judah through a thorough investigation of epigraphical, archaeological, and biblical sources. Approaching biblical history as history, Miller and Hayes examine the political and economic factors that give context to the Israelite monarchy's actions and the biblical writers' accounts. Now updated with the latest research and critical discoveries, including the Tell Dan Inscription, and considering the lively debate surrounding the reliability of biblical accounts, Miller and Hayes's judicious and evenhanded portrayal gives detailed attention to the nature, strengths, and limitations of various forms of evidence for understanding Israel's origins and early history. The new edition also includes thirty-four new maps, helpful notes, and numerous charts and photographs.

Horrid Logic.......2007-04-26
Wow, this book is a nearly worthless except for that at least the authors acknowledge that the Bible probably contains historical events. It's amazing how seemingly wise men put out garbage like this. An example of the utter stupidity for example is that one of the authors claims that Samuel didn't really do all the things that were claimed of him because he was described as doing different things. Why does he think that? But he thinks Samuel couldn't have been both a prophet and "king-maker" he says. Uh... CUZ? Kinda stands to reason that if a person is a prophet then yeah, they are more likely to have the standing to king someone, not if there are just some ordinary guy. Instead he claims that Samuel was probably a cult leader. LOL.
No wait they are right, God doesn't have the ability to make someone a prophet plus allow them to have any other significant roles like kinging someone one time because it's just too hard for the creator and sustainer of the universe to get someone to be someone great and do something amazing. Not.
This is preschooler dribble hoping for lobster and wine elbow rubbing with other God-haters. Jesus is worth more than paper money, a few hundred lobsters, and a cellar full of wine you will never finish off.
Very Good Standard Book.......2006-12-19
It's true that the OT is often the only source for the early history of Israel and Judah, but Miller and Hayes tactfully duck the question of the historicity of the many legendary early events, and begin where they can start to tie the OT account to external and archaeological sources. I found this book to be a good introduction to the topic and a useful reference to have on the shelf.
has little to add to the old testament.......2002-10-20
This is a great book, very readable and scholarly. There exists one problem though: this book has practically nothing to add to what is written, just as clearly and just as easily accessible, in the old testament.
I read this book seeking to find a modern perspective on the old testament narrative, which would include all the findings of modern archeology and other sciences. What I found is that modern scholarship has precious little to add to what is already set down in the bible because the OT remains, with very few and mostly modest exceptions, our only source for this period. This is not the fault of the authors, of course, who are very noteworthy scholars. A few bits of history are scattered throughout the book which are not obvious from a reading of the bible, but the vast majority is just summary and interpretation (not usually very revealing) of the OT.
It goes without saying that if you are interested in the history of this period and have not read the bible, open the good book to Genesis 1 and start reading.
A Nice Introduction to Ancient Israel.......2000-06-27
J. Maxwell Miller and John H. Hayes' A History of Ancient Israel and Judah provides a solid introduction to the methods and problems of studying the development of the kingdoms that came to be known as Israel and Judah. The book deals with events from the time of Israel's origins (the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages) to the work of Ezra and Nehemiah (the fifth and fourth centuries BCE). On the whole, A History is more cautious with the biblical texts than other histories of ancient Israel, such as John Bright's A History of Israel. Miller and Hayes spend less time offering guesses about the more speculative aspects of Israel's history, such as the patriarchs and exodus, and concentrate their efforts on the later period (tenth to fifth centuries BCE) for which conclusions are more certain. From its beginning, this study is very much set within the geographical, political, economic, and religious context of the ancient Near East and Egypt as a whole. Perhaps the most attractive feature of this work is the inclusion of both photographs and fairly complete translations of extra-biblical documents pertinent to various stages of Israel's history. A History is divided into chronological segments, and the authors proceed by summarizing the biblical texts germane to the time period, critically examining these accounts along with extra-biblical and archaeological evidence, and then drawing conclusions. If the book has a major weakness, it is the absence of either footnotes or endnotes, but the authors provide a sizable topical bibliography at the conclusion of the book, and overall, A History of Ancient Israel and Judah is sound, readable scholarship.

Step by Step my high school prep!.......2007-01-02
When I was in Elementary School studying chess from grades 3-6) I learned from "Chess For Juniors" as my text book (probably the best and most easy book to learn from for a 9 to 13 year old). However, for a higher reading level I found this book to be an equal if not a better book for an 8th or 9th grader (not to put "Chess for Juniors" down (it is certainly better for your average elementeary, and early middle school reader and has everything needed for the non-high school player), but "Learn Chess" is like what I like, A college text book, like my older brothers in college use. Simple suggesting, NO BETTER BOOK FOR AGE 16+ reading level is this one, LEARN CHESS, under that "Chess for Juniors". Get Started in Chess these books are the best!!!!
A first rate book to learn all the basics!.......2006-09-16
"Learn Chess" is a great place to start if you are either someone who doesn't know the difference between a Horse and a Knight or what the "en passant rule" is. It is also good if you know a little about chess but what formal instruction. This is not a small kiddie book! It is written as if it was like a book to be used in a high school chess class (about the right level).
"Learn Chess" is very clear and goes way beyond the starting rules by covering strategy that will take you to an intermedate player! You get a lot of material that is well organized. If you are looking for a book for an elementary school kid you might consider a lower reading level and more simple presentatiion with "chess, a complete guide for the beginner" that is written for the young reader. Once you finish "Learn Chess" you will be ready for books on tactics, traps, openings, endgames and complete game collections!
Efficient and tremendously clear.......2003-09-25
A classic: the best A-to-Z course in chess I've ever seen; ideal for teaching smart kids to play. It's very, very efficient, which means that it can cover everything from the basics to more complicated material in just 170 pages. The elegance of the presentation makes its points easy to hold in your head when you're playing.
The real glory of this book is the middle sections: the chapters on double attack, forks, pins and skewers, and the like are great. It's easy to explain the basics of chess and some of the advanced student subjects like openings; but the middle game subjects can be hard to explain logically (rather than through endless examples). This book does a great job of that.
The same text used to come in two very attractively bound slim volumes.
All the basics in one book.......2003-03-01
This is a very good book on the basics of chess. I would recommend it for anyone who wants to learn to play chess, or who already knows but would like to improve.
This book was originally published in 2 volumes. Now they have been combined into one. Volume explains the rules, and the most basic info about the opening, ending, and how one wins a chess game.
Volume 2 covers the most useful ways to win material (pins, skewers, forks). There follows a chapter on mating attacks. Then there is more info about openings and endings. The last couple of chapters give some general advice and points the reader to other sources of chess information.
Each chapter has exercises. Some of them are simple, others challenging. Don't be discouraged if you can't work them all. My advice is to do every exercise. Write down your answers before looking at the solution. If possible, work the exercises without using a set and board in order to develop the ability to look ahead. I enjoyed working the exercises. They illustrate the lessons, and some of them challenge you to think a little deeper.
The Alburt and Pelts books are also very good. Learn Chess could be used before, after, or along with the A&P books to get a couple of views of the same information.
