Falling Flat........2007-09-24

NOTE: I did not like this book, so if you are a die-hard fan of Sage and the sieris i suggest hiding this review.

After captivating you with her last two books. Sage's attempt at a story is laughable.

The writing style that gripped her readers in Flyte and Magick does not appear in Physic. The people seemed to have lost their flames and senses of humors, Snorri and the Queen have no death to either of them. Each has a chapter devoted to them but they are loosely explained and the chapters tell nothing.

Worser still is the fact that most of the Heap family is not even int he book. lovable Silas Heap and Motherly Sarah heap are in the background, the book does not seem complete and the series looks unprofessional.

The plot is confusing and always makes you re read passages and wonder what is going on. The word choice is good but overly done, there is none of the simplicity that was so endearing about Magyk and Flyte.

The book is a real put downer. After Sage's steller novels you would expect something a little more high class and gripping. For fans of the siearies, I suggest pretending that this book did not exist. It si a dissaponment to her fans.

I sincerely hope that Sage recaptures the magyk in next novel.

Physik - A Great Read for Septimus Heap Lovers!.......2007-08-24

This was by far the best of the Septimus Heap series! If you have read Magyk and Flyte then you must read Physik! The plot is very in depth and exciting and new characters are introduced that you will come to love as much as Jenna and Septimus. What a wonderful book and hopefully there will be another in the series!

I am a school teacher and my students were all reading the Septimus Heap series of books. I decided to read them as well, and they are FANTASTIC! I was disappointed that Physik was the last of the series(so far), I want to keep reading about him!

One of my favorite Dresden novels.......2007-09-11

I don't know what it is about this one, but it's among my favorite of the Dresden novels. Maybe because I'm a Murph fan and she kicks demonic hiney in this one. It's also the first book where the happenings in the Nevernever are really shown to influence the real world.

Besides, come on!!! Climactic battle with faeries, a demon, and a ghoul assassin inside a Super-Walmart? What's not to love?

Also, the decisive final battle really shows Harry leaning on others for a change, far more team-work than he's been comfortable displaying in some of the previous novels.

I'll just conclude the review with this thought from Harry "I know something you don't... the phone number to the Pizza 'Spress!"

The Queens of Faery.......2007-08-31

Summer Knight (2000) is the fourth urban fantasy novel in the Dresden Files series, following Grave Peril. In the previous volume, Harry called upon the spirits buried below the Red Court mansion and they took down Bianca. Susan escaped from Bianca as the spirits attacked. Harry finally told Susan that he loves her.

The hospital was so crowded that Harry had to share a room with Charity Carpenter. Despite her ordeal, Charity had plenty of energy to chew out Harry for endangering her husband and her child. However, Michael decided to name the boy child after Harry. Susan sent flowers and called every day, but she stayed away from Harry; her Hunger was too intense to approach him.

In this novel, the White Council comes to Chicago and toads rain down in Lake Meadows Park. When Harry goes over to check the unusual weather, Billy the Werewolf is waiting for him. Billy chastises him for becoming a hermit and then saves his life from a ghoul.

Billy has checked the office before coming to the park. Harry has an eviction notice from the landlord of his office building and an appointment with a Ms. Sommerset at three o'clock. Harry drops Billy off at his apartment and leaves him in Georgia's capable hands. She is bandaging the wounds as Harry drives away.

Harry doesn't have time to go home and freshen up (although he really needs to do so). Instead, he drives to the office. As he enters the doorway, Harry readies his shield bracelet for action, but only finds his prospective client inside.

Ms. Sommerset is both stunningly beautiful and intimidating. Dresden pulls a .44-caliber revolver out of his desk drawer and commands Ms. Sommerset to put her hands flat on the desktop. Then he flicks an iron nail across the desktop toward her hands.

At the last minute, the Fairy jerks back her hand and hastily steps away from the desk. These actions impress her more than anything else Harry has said or done. Now she wants Harry to become her agent and soon informs him that she has acquired his debts from his godmother. Then she states her real name and title: Mab, Queen of Air and Darkness.

The Winter Queen wants Harry to discover who was behind the death of the Summer Knight and also to recover his missing powers. At that moment, the Summer Queen is assuming that Ronald Reuel was killed by Mab's catpaws. The Summer forces are gathering to start the war prior to the Summer Solstice while their strengths are maximized.

The Winter Queen would prefer that this war never occurs. Harry is charged with preventing the war by finding the true perpetrator. The Summer Queen will provide her own emissary to work with him.

In this story, Dresden goes to the White Council conference in an old plaid bathrobe. He claims that Mister -- his cat -- had used his good robe as a litter box (which was probably true) but no one inquired why he hadn't stored the robe in a more secure place. Maybe his attitude toward the Council had a little to do with his careless storage.

Anyway, the Merlin is rather irritated with Harry for starting the war with the Red Court vampires. Others realize that Harry had been lured into a trap and did the only reasonable thing by rescuing the other guests. His old mentor -- Ebenezar McCoy -- advises him on the political maneuvering and Harry survives the Council plots against him. However, Dresden begins to recognize some of the stratagems of the Winter Queen.

Harry enlists Murphy's assistance in retrieving the police reports on the Ronald Reuel case. Yet he is very concerned by the condition of the tough detective. She is having trouble sleeping, suffering from night terrors concerning Kravos and what he did to her. He finally realizes that she needs to face her fears to overcome them and that his protectiveness is not helping.

This story introduces Elaine, whom Harry had thought dead. She is the Summer Queen's emissary, but is closer to Lady Summer, the daughter of the Summer Queen. Harry is happy to know that she survived the fire resulting from his faceoff with his foster father. After she explains her enthrallment by Justin, he feels an unexpected relief that she had not intentionally betrayed him.

This tale has moments of introspection, but is the most action filled story to date. From the first chapter to the last, it involves Harry in situations where his powers are definitely inferior to his opposition. No more blasting away at his enemies; he has to use some subtlety and finesse to accomplish his mission. Somehow, I don't think that this approach will carry over to the next volume.

Highly recommended for Butcher fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of supernatural creatures, Council intrigues, and wizardly manipulations.

Silly Faeries.......2007-08-24

I just finished reading this book and while I do admit to liking the previous one, Grave Peril, a bit more...this one is by no means a stinker. In fact, overall its the best in the series from book 1-4. Harry, the hero and wizard extrodinaire of the story is evolving into a much more realistic character (ok, realistic for a fantasy novel). His naive ways are much less a frustrating factor in this book, and the plots become much more involved. One of the series' main sidekicks, Murphy, is MUCH more real and likeable in this book. There are twists and turns and it keeps you on your toes as the metaphorical stuff hits the fan. The author, Jim Butcher is definitely getting the hang of what he wants from this series and it shows. I'd highly recommend all of these books, and most especially this one, for any fan of the fantasy genre.

Definition of a page turner.......2007-07-25

If you like fantasy, sci fi, mystery, or all of the above, you will get sucked into the Dresden books. Summer Knight is one of the best.

While the writing isn't great, the stories are certainly entertaining, and are great reading for 1st-3rd Graders. The stories follow two siblings, Jack and Annie, who are magically transported to various places, and the various settings set the stage for some very fascinating, to the young reader, tales they will come to treasure.

I've been reading to my son since he was two weeks old. He just had his fourth birthday, and I gave him this Magic Tree House box set. I thought he'd get bored pretty quick since there aren't illustrations on every page, but I was wrong. We read the first book in an afternoon, and he wanted to move straight on to the next one. We've since finished the first four and I've ordered the next box set, and while we wait we're re-reading the first four. Fantastic books!

The entire series Magyk (Septimus Heap, Book 1), Flyte (Septimus Heap, Book 2), and Physik (Septimus Heap, Book 3) by Angie Sage are fast-paced, non-stop fantasy adventures for middle aged readers. Book Four: Queste, will be released in the UK in April 2008. If you miss Harry Potter, you will not be disappointed with the discovery of Septimus Heap and the world of the Ramblings. I would even go so far as to say that Angie Sage is a better writer in terms of plot and pacing. The perfect gift for children ages 9 to 12 (or adults who still miss Harry) and love the world of magic and adventure. Happy reading!

Contrary to many of the reviewers, the book wasn't anything special and lacks the magic of Harry Potter. I was convinced by the reviews to buy this book even though I wasn't sure if I really wanted to buy it and readit. However , it is still a pageturner.I found the magic spells abd creatures to be cool. I doubt I will be buying any of the many sequels. This book is about the Heap family, whose adopted daughter is wanted dead along with them since she is the queen's daughter. The Supreme Custodian and his evil servants are hot on their trail.Towards the end of the book, we dicover who is and what has happened to Septimus Heap.

I bought this book after being persuaded by the dozens of excellent reviews, even though I'd never seen it recommended anywhere else. Magyk is Angie Sage's first novel -- and it shows. If bad writing bothers you, even a little, stay very far away from this book. Even your average fantasy novel is miles ahead of this stuff.

My children (15, 12, 9 and 7) are sophisticated readers and they all had strong negative reactions to this awful book.

Sage is an appallingly poor tour guide. Her prose fails to flow, connections between characters are lacking, the plotting is full of holes, and character development is almost nonexistent.

There are so many great fantasy novels available for young readers, this book does not deserve your time.

Very two-dimensional. Sage's history of writing picture books is evident in both the writing style and character development. The plot elements are plagarized and don't really hang together well. The climax and denouement don't provide any satisfying drama or surprise. The book would work for poor middle school readers or good ones in the early grades, but I wouldn't recommend it for smart tweens.

I place this on a par, in it's own way, with Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet.

Deeply meaningful, cloaked in a tale of a child. I read part of it at my mother's funeral. Not that it is a sad story, per se. But there was not a dry eye in the house when I finished.

What it has to say on loving and on loss is absolutely worth more than this book costs and every minute you spend reading it.

Magical journey..........2007-06-13

My first book ever was The little prince. It was my dad's first present on the day I was born. Since then I have read it at least 20 times, and every time I read it it delivers a different message. I think this is a book that will be enjoyed by kids as well as adults. This french version is beautiful, and very similar to the one my dad gave me in spanish. Has the original drawings with nice colors. As someone stated this book can be interpreted in different ways and that's why it's so magical. I consider it one of the best short stories ever. A true masterpice.

Classic in any lanugage.......2007-03-12

I've read this book many times, sometimes in English, sometimes in French. I've read it for pleasure. I've studied it. I've taught it. I love it. The fox's secret is an important lesson for us all and one I appreciate being reminded of. I recommend this book to anyone, it's been translated into over 100 languages. (It's been translated more than any book besides the Bible I've heard.) I love sharing it with people which is why I will teach it as long as I'm teaching and I will read it aloud to my children when I have them.

Although I believe that this book is for everyone young or old, I think that "grown ups" will appreciate it more than kids.

The book has passages that remind the adult of the innocent little kid within.

In a lot of ways, the wisdom in the story comes as somehow a reality check.

In depth the book is about life, relationships (the little prince and the rose), friendships (the little prince and the fox) and human caracteristics...

I have read this story so many times and every time I discover something "new". This book is a work of art!

If you speak French, I recommend the French language edition over the English one.

Not too bad for a technical book........2007-08-22

I am about 1/3 through the Professional SQL Server 2005 Integration Services book. It was worth buying. I don't view this as a Step-By-Step type book. You need a little SSIS background first. A background in DTS will not necessarily prepare you for SSIS.
Watching the videos on the LearnIntegrationServices,com web site FIRST is definitely the way to go. The major negative that I have thus far is that it is somewhat difficult to follow when trying to complete the example packages. More step1, step2, etc. would have been helpful. However, I have been able to make all of the examples work. Sometimes that is a major accomplishment with these type books. Also, be sure to view the corrections errata on the Wrox website.

The Best SSIS Book I Have Read.......2007-07-04

I got this book in hopes that it would unlock the mysteries of SSIS. After reading the hype about what a great improvement SSIS is over Data Transformation Services (DTS), I really wasn't getting much more done with SSIS. Sure, the GUI is better, but it is quirky, a real 1.0 effort by a company famous for not getting it right until at the least 3.1 version. There are lots of bells and whistles, but documentation is really sparse.

What I found was that there really is not a great deal more in this book than in the SQL Server Books On Line documentation, particularly after the BOL update in February 2007. In fact, this is really more about how things are supposed to work than how they actually work. I only use SSIS because I've been told to use it, but more and more of my production work is going back into stored procedures, JScript and custom C# code because it is just as difficult to use SSIS as it was to use DTS. Really, do we still need VB Scipt as the only scripting language? Why don't basic text exiting commands work in some of the text boxes?

My company has bought just about every SSIS book on the market, and none are any better than this one. So that says its the best, right?

Pick another book!.......2007-06-25

***NOTE TO WROX*** Before you release a tutorial, have someone other than the authors (or their friends) try each and every lesson!

This has to be one of the WORST tutorial/step-by-step books ever written.

I'm a seasoned DBA that has worked on every version of MS-SQL ever released. Starting with 4.9.2. I've also worked on Sybase, Oracle, Postgress and MySQL. Add to this several years of VB/C experience and time spent as a corporate trainer, and you can guess my technical aptitude. My experience with DTS/ETL includes hundreds (if not thousands) of packages on 7.0 & 2000. This book was purchased as a means of ramping up for a new consulting gig on SSIS. It was a complete waste of money.

The "tutorials" are disorganized, confusing, and the instructions don't match the examples. Even more annoying are the sections that appear to be lessons that aren't. You won't realize this until you start inputting the example and then get to a new paragraph that tells you this subject will be covered in another chapter. Even worse are the real examples whose instructions refer you back to a step that was left out or edited out of the book. This begins in chapter two when you are told to create a new "project" and then later told to add another project to the "solution", but, there was never any mention on how to start a "solution". This sets the tone for the rest of the book. You'll learn early on to read the entire chapter, then go back to the beginning and "try" the examples. Don't even get me started on the explanations being on one page, while the diagrams for the explanation are on the back of that page. Read a few sentences; turn the page to see the diagram; turn back to read some more; turn back to see the diagram (lather, rinse, repeat...)

It normally takes me only a few hours to breeze through five or six chapters of a technical tutorial. After TWO DAYS (a full Saturday and Sunday) of frustration that got me as far as half way through the fourth chapter, I discarded the book, drove to a local bookstore and bought something else off the self.

Rule #1 for tutorial books: The instructions must be COMPLETE.

Probably the people that gave this book a good review are the same people onthe covor - there are 10 people on the cover, count 'em ten. How can 10 people write a cohesive book?

Anyway, I got this book when I wasa beginner in SSIS, and now have a lot of experience with SSIS. Hardly ever have I found this book helpful. The instructions and examples are thin, and never seem to cover what I'm looking for. Only found a couple of topics like logging, or event handling with a little good info to get me started.

If I threw this book away I wouldn't miss it

This is a very plot heavy and magic heavy book. That makes it perfect for those not necessarily wedded to long, dense books. It got a bit silly at times, but that's perfect for its intended audience. The thickness of the paper and the size and spacing of the type make it appear much longer than it is.

This is a wonderful book full of fun and adventure in which the Heaps are caught up in the stream of magic and the evil plot of evil wizard DomDaniel trying yet agian to become king and the Extra ordinary wizard. Along with some help from one of the Heaps (which one is it?), DomDaniel almost succeeds. Anyone who likes adventure and magic will like this story because of its amazing storyline and happy ending.

Okay so Septimus Heap is an apprentice to an extraordinary wizard, and he's back in this sequel to Magyk. As you might have guessed, DomDaniel was defeated but not destroyed, and he's more intent than ever on ruling the castle as the extraordinary wizard. To do this, DomDaniel must remove Jenna, the rightful heir to the throne.

The book finds Septimus Heap about a year after the events in the first book. He has slipped into his new life as an apprentice. The darkness still lingers as a menacing shadow follows Marcia the wizard everywhere. Meanwhile, Jenna also has adjusted to her new life as a princess. Life is good for both as they say but one day when the mysterious Simon Heap shows up he suddenly kidnapps Jenna. Septimus ends up going off on his own to resuce Jenna because no one believes him when he says Simon is now evil.

Over all, I enjoyed reading Flyte. Although the plotting meanders at times and the writing isn't as good as with Magyck, the book has many fun elements and is an interesting read. I'd recommend this highly to readers of Robert Stanek's Keeper Martin's Tales (The Kingdoms and the Elves, In the Service of Dragons, etc). The books are similarly well written and inventive. I'd also recommend to those who enjoy Artemis Fowl but are looking for more detail and more mature stories.

A fun read.......2007-05-17

I enjoyed reading Flyte, the sequel to Magyk in the Septimus Heap series of books. It has a lot of fun elements, and the plot held my attention well. Yes, there are some things in it that will make you think of Harry Potter here and there, but Angie Sage manages to keep those things few, and her world is not one to be confused with the world of the Harry Potter books.
In this book Septimus is coming into more acceptance with his family and finding his place in their lives and as Apprentice to the ExtraOrdinary Wizard. The plot moves quickly, and while there are a few moments of predictability, in general it kept me guessing. I look forward to reading the third installment soon.

The first one was great. The second one...I think that Frank Miller read "Kingdom Come" and said "I can do better!".

Only problem is. He didn't.

Once Amazon dropped their discount this is no longer worth it. Buy it if you love Frank Miller but buy it somewhere else.

Everybody knows TDKR was a phenominal book. What everybody doesn't know is that The Dark Knight Strikes Again is ALSO a phenominal book. Many readers have their opinions warped by superficial comic book reviewers who critique Miller's sequel because it was not as "dark" or "gritty" as the first book was. Is that it? Is that you're only complaint? Are you so ignorant that you're not going to delve underneath the appearances to look at the thematic significance of the work?
Yes, TDKSA is a departure from its predecessor in terms of style. But it still shines in RELEVENCY. Miller gives us a mind blowing look at what our society is and may become. What is democracy in the media age? Do the people really run a country where a select few that run the major news outlets control everything that the people know and believe? And does it make us feel any better that it is one man, Batman, who is arrogant enough to enforce his social ideology on us?
Don't be fooled. While The Dark Knight Returns is still a significant work in today's literary work, it was a book about yesterday. The Dark Knight Strikes Again is a book about TODAY.

I can distinctly remember the pleasure I had reading the original Return of the Dark Knight issues way, way back. A massive, high quality volume like Absolute Dark Knight is fitting for a such body of work. Sadly, the second part is _much_ less interesting in most respects.

Another intricate and exciting adventure.......2007-10-03

My son received this book for his 4th birthday and has been enjoying it at different levels over the past year. At first, he loved looking for the knights, admiring the intricate pop-ups, and listening to parts of the text about knights and their castles.

Now that he is 5, he is enjoying the book at a different level, spending longer moments discovering the surprises each page has to offer, and listening to the text with a greater attention to detail.

Of course, many of our grown-up guests enjoy looking at all of our Sabuda and Reinhart books as well. They are great fun and a true wonder!

Fascinating Pop-up book will spark the imagination of children and adults alike. Fun facts provide a glimpse into Medieval lives and are never dry. Kyle Olman came to our school and gave our 5th graders a demonstration on creating their own pop up knight, and happens to be an extremely kind and patient teacher as well as an incredible new author/artist!

Although this is clearly a book for older children and my son is only 16 months old, he already LOVES this book! (although secretly, I think my husband possibly enjoys it even more!) We've had it for 2 months now, and he still oohs and aahs as each page is turned (the boy, not the man!). His favorite is the interactive page in the middle where pulling on the arrowed tabs bring "life" to all of the medieval workers doing their jobs. We keep the book on a high shelf out of his reach, to keep him from damaging it accidentally. He eagerly requests to see it several times a week. It's interesting to me how he's never treated the Sabuda & Reinhart pop-up books (we have 3 - "Sharks" and "Dinosaurs" are just as amazing, although very different, from this one) in the same rough manner as he does with his other "toddler" books. Somehow, he knew these books are not the same. Even at his young age, he knows he has to let Mommy or Daddy help him with the delicate pages, and he gets SO excited with all of the amazing "action"! Excellent! Wonderful gift for any child.
