I am a HUGE fan of Garth Nix's works. The books, expecially in this series, capture my attention every time to where I feel like I can't put them down until I read the very last punctuation mark. Lady Friday followed along with the other books, and I cannot wait for the next two to finish out the series!

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Read!.......2007-06-17

This was yet another great book in this series. I was so disappointed when I got finish with it in less than 12 hours. I cannot believe I have to wait another year for Superior Saturday and then another for Lord Sunday!

5 out of 5 stars A top pick for prior fans........2007-06-10

Garth Nix's latest ' The Keys to the Kingdom' addition is LADY FRIDAY, telling of Arthur Penhaligon, whose friends have been captured by the Pipe in a world where the army controls most of the Great Maze. Pitted against the ruthless Lady Friday, Arthur finds himself in a race to win control of the House and assume his role as a rightful heir - or lose everything - in this fifth book of the series, recommended as a top pick for prior fans.

5 out of 5 stars An already exciting and at times scary adventure.......2007-06-01

On the fifth day, there was fear...

Leaf wakes up in a hospital ward and realizes something strange is going on. There are several people with her, but they all appear to be sound asleep, and there are no medical items. Leaf remembers that Lady Friday was a nurse at the tent hospital, but it's not until a frightened hospital cleaner tries to save Leaf from being detected that Leaf becomes aware of the danger that she --- along with her Aunt Mango and several other sleepers --- is in.

Meanwhile, Arthur wakes up from a nightmare in the Citadel. The last battle has left him shaken, but he appears to have defeated the Piper for now. Unfortunately, the New Nithling army has control of the Great Maze, while Superior Saturday causes trouble by cutting off the telephone lines and controlling the elevators of the House. To make matters worse, the Dame Primus, since gaining the Fourth Part of the Will, has unwonted, barely-concealed moments of rage. Arthur isn't sure he can trust her, but he has no choice. He is trying to figure out what happened to his family in the week that has passed on Earth, as well as locate his friends who have been captured --- or worse --- by the Piper.

Then, a messenger from Lady Friday arrives bearing a letter and a gift. Lady Friday has apparently abdicated her position and will turn it over to whoever can find the Fifth Part of the Will and the Fifth Key. For Arthur, this means he has to go against the Piper and Superior Saturday and possibly gain control over them. However, the week hasn't been going well for Arthur, and it gets worse when he is unexpectedly transferred to somewhere within the House, with no known way of getting back to the Great Maze or to the Secondary Realms.

While Arthur tries to make his way to Lady Friday's Scriptorium, he encounters some familiar enemies and meets a few new characters, including the Paper Pushers, who have an unusual but interesting line of work. Arthur has more work cut out for him, but when Leaf discovers Lady Friday's real motive --- "experiencing" --- the day is further seeped in the fear of the unknown.

LADY FRIDAY, the fifth book in Garth Nix's The Keys to the Kingdom series, adds another dimension to an already exciting and at times scary adventure that will have readers looking forward to the weekend.

My 10-year-old loves this series, although for that age, I would recommend it for advanced readers. Also, start with book one in the series. The storyline is creative and complex and would be difficult to follow for anyone coming in mid-series.

I was in the process of introducing some new processes relating to dealing with our cusotmers, so I purchased this book. It is wonderful - and if you want a real treat attend the park after reading it. It will amaze you how this organization goes out of their way to EXCEED the customer's expectations. In the world today, it seems customer service is no longer a priority to some establishments.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book on customer service.......2007-01-10

I had read this book a few years ago and wanted to reread it. I realized I had given my last copy away to someone who really need it. They story is easy to follow and the lessons stay with you for a long time. If you work in customer service and really we all do, this is a great read.

3 out of 5 stars Both Honest, and Dishonest, Just Like the Magic Kingdom.......2006-07-09

I can't give this book a one because it does summarize Disney's business morals well, BUT, it leaves out what is obvious, it's lack of respect for God. Disney, as this book shows, relies on pleasing the customer, not God. It's also helpful in that it does give some good business advice.

Here is a summary of the "keys" to the magic kingdom, so to speak (these are quotes):

1. competition is always who the customer compares you with
2. pay fantastic attention to detail
3. everyone walks the talk (every cast member [employee] is asked to help the guests [customers]
4. everything walks the talk [meaning all the products and scenery is to reflect Disney's care for the customer's happiness at Disney and with Disney]
5. customers are best heard through many ears [meaning through survey's and the letters they send to Disney]
6. reward, recognize, and celebrate [the employees if they do a good job, if not, lol, don't say anything (how nice)]

I have no clue where to put this since it wasn't one of the keys, but here it is:

-Always make eye contact and smile
-Exceed guest expectations and seek out guest contacts [whatever that means]
- Always give outstanding quality service
-Greet and welcome each guest
-Maintain a personal standard of quality in your work [and if it's personal it's automatically gonna be a good thing cuz...]
-go beyond the call of duty
-Demonstrate strong team initiative
-Communicate aggressively with guests and fellow cast members
-Preserve the magical guest experience [meaning?]
(And the above instructions are guidelines not rules the book says)

7. everyone makes a difference

This is a good book to read (tho not buy) to see how the how some secular business minds think and how it parallels the Bible's laws in some ways.

4 out of 5 stars Seven Keys to Success.......2006-06-30

This is a fun book, easy to read, great ideas to make your business more successful and customer friendly. I would recommend it highly and it is a great tool for a staff training or retreat.

5 out of 5 stars Customer Service 101: A Must Read for Your Staff.......2005-10-29

This is an excellent tool for managers. While a good manager knows the seven secrets, the presentation in this book reinforces what you know. The secrets are presented in a different format that makes you think of other ways to motivate your staff. What makes this book really stand out is it is an easy, interesting book to read. Most books of this type are presented in a boring, academic format...while this is presented through various characters...those we have in our workplaces. I would recommend this book for all managers...especially those first time managers.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

Los Angeles—For five hundred years, the women in Claudia Lambert's family have studied men and passed their wisdom from mother to daughter. Disdainful of men, Claudia's daughter has refused her inheritance and now Claudia's greatest fear is that she will die without sharing the "keys to the kingdom." Acting on her husband's suggestion, Claudia thinks Karen Trevini might prove a worthy student. Sharing her esoteric knowledge poses a risk, but the opportunity to save Karen's 19-year marriage convinces Claudia to take this chance.

During a series of afternoon meetings at her home in Pasadena, CA, Claudia begins to teach Karen the "keys" to understanding men and creating intimate, equal partnerships with them. Their time spent together leads to a unique exchange of information that transforms Karen's relationship to all men, and changes her husband Mike's life forever.

"Claudia, Karen and their husbands, Burt and Mike, bring to life what I have learned over the past 12 years studying men," remarks Alison A. Armstrong, researcher, educator, and creator of the nationally led Celebrating Men, Satisfying Women® workshop. "The keys within this novel are surprisingly simple to use and profoundly alter relationships between spouses, lovers, friends, co-workers, parents and their children. This book was written in novel form because I believe people learn more while being entertained by stories."

What are the Keys to the Kingdom? Claudia starts by teaching Karen about the Stages of Development, which explain how men's identities are shaped and expressed in predictable stages from infancy through seniority. These stages, called Pages, Knights, Princes and Kings, make sense of the changing motivations, needs and capacities that affect every part of men's lives, including how they relate to work, friendships and family. Karen discovers that the source of the constant bickering in her relationship is that Mike is in "the Tunnel", a profoundly challenging transition between Prince and King. The imminent arrival of Mike as her "King" fuels her determination to learn the "keys to the kingdom."

As Karen explores the Stages of Development - and how to work with them to get her own needs met - she also learns, among a treasure trove of information, how to listen to men for more intimacy, the key that adds surprising excitement to a stale sex life, the generosity in receiving gifts, and how to nurture the power of her own femininity.

The first in a series of three books meant to cover the encyclopedia of information Armstrong has gathered and teaches in the workshops of PAX Programs Incorporated, which Armstrong co-founded. Keys to the Kingdom uses the perspectives of its four main characters to allow the reader to experience her information from the point of view of both men and women. Part romance, part mystery, part life-altering education, the reader will cry and chuckle their way to better relationships.

Many people are surprised to learn that Armstrong had the concept for her fictional series before developing the Celebrating Men, Satisfying Women workshop.

An important novel for our times, Keys to the Kingdom is sure to encourage understanding between men and women and enhance the relationships of every reader. Included at the end of this novel is the first chapter of The Transformation of a Frog Farmer, the next book in the series.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars informative & inspirational.......2007-09-16

Thought provoking, fiction that sparks a deep cord of basic truth in male-semale relationships. A delightful read as well.

4 out of 5 stars Another point of view.......2007-09-10

The "Keys to the Kingdom" is an easy read, yet thought-provoking. The book is based on Armstrong's work over the last few decades. She has explored the world of men -- what makes them different and how to improve our lives with them. She builds a case for understanding and respecting men just as they are and how they change over the course of their lives. And it many cases it makes sense. There has been too much "men-bashing" over the past decades.

The most profound piece is that of listening. I think it can be applied to every human being, not just men. The greatest gift you can give to someone is to truly listen to them and to wait until their answers are complete before jumping in with your own thoughts and opinions. It's not something that we can do all the time, but it's something we can do more often.

And yet I do have an issue with this book -- more of a troubling feeling. Feminism came about for a reason. I'm not the only woman who was giving to a man, starting with my father, for whom living the female life came with too high a price. There appeared to be an underlying message in this book that creating a warm home for a man was a higher priority than that of building a career. The emphasis on women feeling "important" vs. feeling "priceless" harked back to castles and lack of choices. It makes me nervous.

There is wisdom in this book, and I encourage the read. Men are wonderful creatures and need a lot more respect and loving than we, as women tend to give them. This book provides a way to look at men differently and allows us to accept them, as who they are, more readily.

3 out of 5 stars It's okay........2007-08-02

I like a lot of what Alison Armstrong has to say/teach. However, this format was somewhat "hokey", an opinion I read in another review. Plenty of time could be saved if pertinent points were made simply and concisely.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Insightful.......2007-07-02

I had been listening to Alison Armstrong's podcasts & radio shows & was impressed enough by what she had to say about men that I decided to give some of it a try with my relationship. I had been tired of bickering w/ my boyfriend back & forth that he had stopped doing all the things he used too & complained that he didn't give us enough time. So I swallowed my pride & admitted that some of our problems could be my fault. When I noticed that things got better I had to find out more, so I purchased this book. It was an extremely easy read & I was so enthralled with it that I just couldn't put it down. I now feel that I have a better understanding of men & am on the path to learning more, which makes my life so much easier.
Now that I have read this book, things have improved 110%. I stopped seeing him as an enemy that society has taught women, unfortunately, & started to see him as my equal, & for the wonderful man he is. I also see what stage of development into manhood he is in & it opened up my eyes & explained so much. I appreciate him as a man & give him the love & understanding he needs. Now all he wants to do is make me happy. So I let him give his gift. I can't even begin to tell all the wonderful things he does for/with me now. He enjoys it so much he can't get enough sometimes. I feel like I'm floating, I'm ridiculously happy in every way.
I very highly recommend this book to any woman with an kind, open heart who wants make things better with her relationships with men.

5 out of 5 stars I couldn't believe it wasn't me..........2007-05-13

I was fortunate enough to hear just a snippet of a radio interview with the author and it prompted me to find out more about Alison Armstrong. I found "Keys to the Kingdom" and I was delighted by it. It's a fast, easy, and enjoyable read, but more importantly it clarified some of the most important and engaging differences between men and women. I couldn't believe she wasn't talking specifically about ME and MY journey through manhood. It made me realize how my "natural" tendencies could easily drive my wife crazy and result in her natural response that would, in turn, drive ME crazy. It's not about faults or failures, it's about acceptance, understanding, and reaching a level of compatibility that all relationships seek. I have two married children and one who has been "frog-farming" all her life. I won't wait for a special gift occasion, all three are getting their own copy of "Keys to the Kingdom!"

When I first saw that it was about war it kinda turned me off but I still read it anyway b/c I love this series. It wasn't so bad. It's my least favorite of the series though

5 out of 5 stars Great Story!.......2007-04-05

Apparently this series is aimed at a pre-adolescent reader; I am not in that category and yet I am unable to put these books down. The Keys To The Kingdom is a well written and compelling story!

3 out of 5 stars "It is Clearly the Latest Move of the Morrow Days Against You, Arthur, and Against Us...".......2007-03-17

By now the basic premise of Garth Nix's seven-part "The Keys to the Kingdom" series is well established. Arthur Penhaligon has been thrown into an extraordinary world: the epicenter of the universe, known as "the House". Ruled by the treacherous Morrow Days (named after the days of the week and each personifying one of the seven deadly sins: Mister Monday/sloth; Grim Tuesday/greed; Drowned Wednesday/gluttony and now Sir Thursday who appears to be pride), Arthur has been given the task of reassembling the missing pieces of the Will that will strip these characters of their power and return it to the Rightful Heir - himself!

Perhaps a bit more exposition is needed: the Will is the written word of the creator of this world; a mysterious female-deity known as the Architect. Each piece of the Will takes the form of an animal before each is enveloped into Dame Primus; the embodiment of the Will itself. She grows stronger as Arthur returns each part of herself, and armed with the keys of the Morrow Days, the two stand a chance against the awesome power that each Morrow Day wields. So far Arthur has been successful, though the reluctant hero is getting nervous about his chances of returning home to his ordinary life, not to mention the dangers posed to his own world thanks to the upheavals taking place in the House.

In particular, Arthur is terrified about "the Skinless Boy", the doppelganger that has taken his place in the real world and who has the power to infect those about him with a grey mould that renders them his mindless servants. Sending his friend Leaf (her parents were hippies) back home to attempt to find the source of the Skinless Boy's power and destroy it, Arthur turns his attention to matters in the House. He has unknowingly been drafted into the Glorious Army of Sir Thursday, who has arrogantly released several thousand Nithlings (creatures made from Nothingness) into his province, the Great Maze, in order to train his troops. Feeling that it is the best hiding place for Arthur, Dame Primus encourages him to enlist so that he might seize the opportunity to get close find the forth piece of the Will. Moving between the two plots is the irrepressible Suzy Turquoise Blue, easily Nix's most vivacious character.

Garth Nix spent a few years in the Australian Army Reserve, which explains why so much of the routine and regulations of army life is so vividly captured in Arthur's stint as a soldier. Long hours of tedious training, yelling drill sergeants, heavy marches through difficult terrain, endless inspections, being shuffled from officer to officer, and then the heat and confusion of battle itself - it's enough to put you off war for good.

Arthur is gradually growing up as the stories go on, willingly taking more and more responsibility on his young shoulders as his emotional investment in the House and its inhabitants grow (not to mention the symbiotic effect it has on his own world). Even if it means loosing his own humanity and becoming a Denizen of the House, Arthur is now fully committed to his cause, foregoing a way out at what seems like a great personal cost. Likewise, pieces of the master-plan at work behind the Morrow Days are beginning to show - could it be that the Days of the Week are not behind some of the chaos? Arthur finds himself relying more and more on himself to find his own path through the turmoil of the political intrigue. At one stage he finds himself caught between three morally ambiguous characters: the self-righteous Will, the tyrannical Sir Thursday and the mysterious Piper that considers himself the Rightful Heir. Event the Architect herself - supposedly the creator of the universe - is thrown into some doubt in this installment. How Arthur wades through these murky waters makes for challenging and thought-provoking reading.

Unfortunately, much of the story feels a bit like padding. Arthur gets "cleaned between the ears", that is, his memory is wiped, but this somewhat clichéd amnesia-device adds little to the plot itself save as a minor inconvenience that he soon overcomes. Likewise, although the action-sequences of Leaf attempting to thwart the designs of the Skinless Boy are tense and fast-paced, it is ultimately a subplot that has no real bearing on the central thread of the story. Garth Nix's vivid imagination is firmly intact when it comes to atmosphere - particularly in his portrayal of the Great Maze as a moveable checkerboard, with each square covered in a different terrain - but although I enjoyed this installment better than "Drowned Wednesday", it still doesn't quite live up to the intense imaginative tour-de-force of "Mister Monday" and "Grim Tuesday." Nevertheless, I'll be on the lookout for "Lady Friday!"

5 out of 5 stars Drowned Wednesday is WONDERFUL!!!!.......2006-08-21

Drowned Wednesday, the 3rd book in The Keys to the Kingdom series, by Garth Nix, is a fantastically original read. (It is the 3rd book in the series, so you do have to start with the first book in the series, Mister Monday.) The characters are very well developed, and it is just as exciting as the previous books in the series. This book is a great blend of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Adventure that you will not forget! I can't wait to get my hands on the 4rth one in the series!

Plot: Along comes Wednesday, and Arthur Penhaligon knows that soon enough he will be summoned back to The House to deal with Lady Wednesday, the third Morrow Day. Unfortunately, when a giant ocean wave comes to do the job, his friend Leaf is with him, and she is forced to come along for the ride.

Arthur and Leaf will have their fair share of adventure this Wednesday: Leaf is mistook for Arthur and picked up by a ship with fluarescent green sails, leaving Arthur afloat alone in the ocean until he is picked up by a ship full of rather incapable 'Salvagers.'

Along with his salvager friends, Arthur will narrowly escape the wrath of Feverfew (a horrible pirate), Learn of the fall of Lady Wednesday, and her transformation into Drowned Wednesday, and eventually be found by Wednesday's Dawn, who takes him to Wednesday herself.

There he learns of how he must find the 3rd part of the Will, and save Wednesday from her horrible fate, A process which will not be easy! But he will be aided by friends old and new, so he might just make it!!

Read this great book to find out what happens!

5 out of 5 stars a great bedtime adventure.......2006-08-03

I have read each of the Keys to the Kingdom books to my [...] every night before bed. We just finished Wens. and are looking forward to starting Thurs. I think the books are a great read even for younger kids who enjoy adventure books, if the parents are willing to help out the reader with the tougher words. I would strongly reccomend these books to children of any age, but also caution that some situation might be a little too scary if your child isn't used to "older" books. We read the Harry Potter series first and it is no scarier then that series.

5 out of 5 stars The Tale of the Whale.......2006-07-03

Wednesday being the third day of the week (if you don't start at Sunday of course), there are no prizes for guessing that this is book three of The Keys to the Kingdom series. If you haven't read Mister Monday and Grim Tuesday, please look no further - without the two preceding books you'll be up a creek without a paddle if you try this one on its own.

Arthur is still recuperating in hospital from his adventures in book two when he is summoned for lunch by Lady Wednesday, Trustee of the Architect and Duchess of the Border Sea. A ship is dispatched to pick him up, which is an unusual mode of transport seeing that he is in a hospital far away from any major body of water. Arrangements are made to resolve this minor inconvenience, and soon Arthur is adrift on his steel bed accompanied by his friend Leaf who was visiting at the time.

Unfortunately the crew of the Flying Mantis picks up the wrong passenger, and Arthur is left adrift, broken leg and all, and with sinking bed and spirits. His spirits are "buoyed" in the nick of time when he discovers a convenient flotation device, but this turns out to be a not a blessing in disguise, but a disaster in the making.

Caught red-handed fooling around with pirate treasure, he is picked up by the crew of a ship named the Moth, and barely escapes being captured by the dread pirate Feverfew (owner of said treasure) and his ship of bone, the Shiver. Soon it's time for lunch with Lady Wednesday, who is cursed with the sin of gluttony, and has been transformed into a creature worthy of her voracious appetite. Barely escaping being a part of the menu, Arthur agrees to an alliance for ownership of the third key and sets off on his third quest of the week in the name of the Will. This proves to be a huge pill to swallow, and gives him a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach.

The most exciting adventure of the series so far, this one is heavily laden with sea-faring rats with both two and four legs, sorcery and heroic deeds, and the humor is at its very best. It will be very difficult for Garth Nix to top this one.

4 out of 5 stars Arthur Penhaligon Goes Down Deep.......2006-06-06

For all you Garth Nix fans, Drowned Wednesday is has 3rd book. This is an exciting sequel to Grim Tuesday. In this book Arthur meets old friends like Suzy Turquoise Blue and new people like some pirates and Drowned Wednesday. As you most likely know, Arthur is a mortal boy like us, but takes trips to the "House", a magical world run by the 7 days of the week (as they call themselves.) arthur goes on another exciting adventure and gets to sail with pirates and rats. Meeting Drowned Wednesday is another story. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys his books and likes adventure and fantasy.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Deserves 7 Stars!.......2007-07-19

Possibly my favorite book of the Keys to the Kingdom series Grim Tuesday has a lot of twists and suspense. My heart raced from page 2 (not saying page 1 wasn't interesting, it just reminds you of Mister Monday and introduces Grim Tuesday. I couldn't even guess what was going to happen by the end of the story but once I got there I was still in shock. It seemed short to me but nevertheless still a great read

5 out of 5 stars If you thought Monday was bad............2007-07-16

This is the second book in Garth Nix's engaging fantasy series Keys to the Kingdom, although it is billed as children's literature, it contains many sophistocated allusions that most kids probably wouldn't get (and some adults might not get either), and is extremely well written and highly recommended for anybody who likes fantasy, be warned however that it is not typical fantasy, it is sometimes very dark (this book is particularly dark and dreary).

After Arthur defeated Mister Monday and cured the Sleepy Plague which threatened to ravage his town and possibly his whole world, he thought he'd get 6 years off to grow up and relax before having to deal with the fantastical realm of the House again, unfortunately the greedy and corrupt Trustee of the Architect, Grim Tuesday has other ideas, he has sent two of his twisted warped Grotestques to Arthur's world where they have proceeded to commence the ruining of Arthur's family's finances and the finances of a good portion of the rest of the world, in order to stop them, Arthur must find a way back into the House, and once there survive Grim Tuesday's horrible Pit, which he has dug in his greed to mine Nothing, which can be made into everything. Along the way he teams up with various characters, new and old, including the irrepressible and irreverent Suzy Blue, and one of Grim Tuesday's many indentured Denizens, a former Theasureus named Japeth, who has a bad habit of talking, well like a theasureus which provides a certain amount of comic relief in the despair of the Pit. He also must convince the sullen stubborn Second Part of the Will to co-operate with him and beat Grim Tuesday in a contest of artistry in order to obtain the Second Key to the Kingdom of Reality and, most importantly as far as Arthur is concerned, save his family and his world from a new Great Depression and get back home.

All and all this is a great book, although not quite as interesting as the first one, perhaps because the first one had more mystery in it, in this one Arthur knows what is going on.

3 out of 5 stars A Grim Outing ..........2007-06-17

Garth Nix continues his Keys to the Kingdom fantasy series in "Grim Tuesday", Arthur Penhaligon's second foray into the mysterious House. This time, the universe is threatened by the greedy Grim Tuesday, who commands the lower house and the dangerous Nothing mine. While this book is defenitely not as rich or compelling as "Mister Monday", tweens wil still be entertained by Nix's creative universe and enjoyable characters.

Grim Tuesday wants his money. And he also wants to rule the whole of the lower House. But to do this, he will need the second key from Arthur Penhaligon. Arthur, who has just returned from the House to find his town still in disaray, just wants to relax. But when Grim Tuesday sends two of his servants to warn Arthur to pay Monday's old debts by handing over the first key, Arthur must decide on whether to oblige to Grim Tuesday's wishes or venture into the House and Grim Tuesday's Nothing mine to retrieve the second key and save the world. Does it sound cliched yet?

The plot definitely lags a bit and resembles the first too much. While the characters are entertaining and there are some original inventions here and there, I really felt like I was on the sidelines watching insteading of actually being part of the story and adventure as I was in "Mister Monday". Throughout the book, I actually felt like Garth Nix was "down-smarting" the plot in order to make it readable for a younger audience. Nix mostly writes for teens, and I would like to let him know that you can still write compelling, rich fantasy for a younger audience and still make it fun without becoming paper-thin and a little silly. Becuase that's what "Grim Tuesday" felt like; a silly, repetive fantasy. This is however only the second outing in the series, and I can only wonder if Nix made the improvements.

"Grim Tuesday" defenitely is not as good as its predecesor. But, despite its thin plotting, the overall story is still entertaining enough to attract the attention of readers and keep them interested in the series. The second book in a popular series usually always lags a bit, so let's hope "Drowned Wednesday" improves over "Grim Tuesday"'s faults and returns to the techniques that made "Mister Monday" so original and enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Exciting part two!.......2006-11-05

In this second part of the Keys to the Kingdom series, the protagonist, Arthur, faces a much darker enemy than in part one. It forces him to descend into the lowest part of The House, where there is no light and the continuous rain contains all-dissolving Nothing. Arthur needs all of his resources, his courage and his friends to make his way out of this hell hole. You'll be begging your Mother for a sic-day off school to finish it!!

1 out of 5 stars the drive behind the story too similar to Mister Monday.......2006-10-08

After _Mister Monday_, I was hoping the author would take _Grim Tuesday_ a step further and really draw the readers into the story. I wanted to know more about the House and the Will, and see Arthur and Suzy really grow as characters. Unfortunately, none of those things happened. Arthur and Suzy seem exactly the same as before, the drive behind the story is exactly the same (Arthur needs to get the Keys in order to save his family), and that made the story very predictable and boring. Disappointing.

Granted, the drive behind every story in this series will have to be similar, because Arthur is the heir apparent and must eventually inherit all the keys to the kingdom. But it's the author's job to keep his readers interested, so he must give us new and exciting aspects to the House, the Will, and the characters in each book. Unfortunately, he didn't do that here.

This also had a rushed-out-the-door feel to it. The writing was clumsy in places, with a lot of telling instead of showing. It felt as if the author were laying the groundwork for further stories. If so, then the best thing to do would be to keep the important pieces, cut the rest, and add it to the real story.

The most intriguing part was the end, where we see how Arthur will meet Wednesday. Wednesday sounds like an intriguing and dangerous character, much more so than Tuesday. It's too bad Tuesday couldn't have been as well.

5 out of 5 stars This is an excellent study guide for Biology.......2004-10-10

This book was so helpful for my college classes, biology I and II. It had all the kind of questions that prepared me for the exams. The explanations were great and quite easy to read. I also used The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations Volume 1 which coverd Organization of Living Things & Chemistry of Life, Structure and Function of the Cell and Energy Pathways, Reproduction and Heredity, Genetics. I also studied Volume 3 which had topics of Kingdom Animalia, Organization of the Animal Body, Animal Form and Function, Animal Reproduction, Development and Behavior. I must say these 3 books really did for me for helping me get excellent grades.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderland on steroids!.......2007-09-03

Garth Nix built a story like no other. Using the old theme of parallel universes and kingdoms he transformed a normal 13 year old boy into a hero that holds the primary key to the universe. Using the seven deadly sins, the seven days of the week and seven different values, we are taken into a House where everything came from.
Arthur Penhaligon and Suzy Blue are two amazing characters, Arthur: a normal boy, asthmatic, not too confident about himself, intelligent and thoughtful. Suzy: a young girl, sensitive, impulsive, strong and brave. Both make the story seem real and really adventurous.
There are other great secondary characters as well, Monday's Noon: the bad guy, loyal servant, strong and fierce. Monday's Dusk: A dark character, a rebel, helps Arthur through some complicated stuff. And finally, Mister Monday and The Will.
Overall the story is amazing, Garth Nix is really an incredibly imaginative author and everything he writes is always a great story. I'd recommend this book to any fantasy fan or any fan of a really good story.
Also read: Grim Tuesday, Drowned Wednesday, Sir Thursday and Lady Friday.

4 out of 5 stars Five stars for the story, 1 star for the book publisher........2007-07-07

I really enjoyed Sabriel. To a lesser degree, I was also fond of the other books in the The Abhorsen Trilogy. When I was in the mood for some YA fantasy the other week, I immediately turned to Mr. Monday.

And it was a pretty good read. Arthur Penhaligon is a classic YA hero-- asthmatic, smart, and non-conformist. The world that he lives in is similar to ours, but different enough to be intriguing. The keys and Mr. Monday are intriguing concepts. The alternative world is a little bit complicated, but I like complicated. Bureaucracy plus the pied piper plus disorganized destiny plus raggedy-wing angels-- lots of stuff to sink your teeth into.

My biggest beef has nothing to do with the story. My brand new HarperCollins edition is missing pages 351 to 401. Instead, they bound pages 257-304 where the other pages should have been. That means that I missed the climactic confrontation with Mr. Monday. Very irritating. I have no idea if it was only my book with this problem. Potential buyers should check to make sure that they have all the pages before it is too late to return the book.

I'll definitely read Grim Tuesday, in any case.

5 out of 5 stars One of My All-Time Favorite Books.......2007-07-06

I first started this series a year ago while traveling to New Jersey. This book was so good it took me 5 hours to read it. I still had 6 hours before we made it to New Jersey. The whole series is very fasinating and creative. This can be confusing sometimes but it brings you right back. My only disappointment is that I have to wait a year for Superior Saturday

1 out of 5 stars I couldn't finish it.......2007-05-14

Ok, I am telling you right now, I always finish a book if nothing else just to get closure, but I stopped and finally put it down and just couldn't waste my time anymore... I tried several time to do pick it up and continue, but finally just gave up and put it down. How convoluted, Salvador Dali thinking processed can you get? The real time part of this book is good and you become attached to the characters, but the minute you go to his otherworld it is so convuluted, out of touch it just can't come together. I think this writer could be really talented and has a lot to offer he just needs to stay in the real world. I had to stop reading it and I dont' recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars this book is awesome.......2007-03-30

Mister Monday by Garth Nix is one of the best books I have ever read. It's a story of a middle school aged kid named Arthur. He's pretty normal except for his dad use to be in a rock band and his mom is one of the most famous doctors in the world. One day while in gym class he has an asthma attack and passes out while people are running to get help a man in a wheel chair and another odd looking man appear. The man in the wheel chair gives Arthur a key, and they disappear again, while holding the key Arthur can breathe perfectly fine. After spending a couple days in the hospital he finds a notebook in his jacket pocket when he held the key and opened the book he sees a drawing of a house that nobody else can see. When he goes the house and touches the key to the wall a black door appears he walks in it and goes to another world. The whole book is about him saving this world because an evil man named mister Monday has unleashed pieces of a will this should be trapped up forever. In the end Arthur defeats Mister Monday and saves the lower house, but there are more days of the week to be stopped.
I thought this was a great book it had non-stop action. On of the greatest scenes of action is when Arthur and Mister Monday are fighting, the descriptiveness was so vivid I thought I was watching them the whole time. Another scene is when Arthur is being chased by creatures called Nithlings, he is saved by a friend and it explains really well how Arthur quickly climbed a rope and threw tiles at the creatures.
Another cool part of the story is how he described the landscapes that were in the book. He would quickly and efficiently describe every place they went, not like some stories where the spend pages describing one little thing. Like when Arthur first got to the House, as everyone called the world he went to, the author quickly described where he appeared but I could vividly see it in my head. Or when Arthur first went in to Mister Monday's dayroom to fight him, thought there wasn't much to it, I knew exactly what it looked like so as the said where they were I understood it like it was my own home.
Finally how everyone changed over the story, the characters in this story changed a lot in through the story. First of all Arthur who changed from assort of goofy asthmatic kid who couldn't run or fight in to a great hero. Suzy, one of Arthur's allies through out the story, changed from working at a crappy job to helping save the world. Mister Monday changed from a ruler of many to be a pathetic man grobbling for his life in front of Arthur.
So all in all this was a great book I would recommend it to anyone. Even though it's a little long it can be read quickly because of how interesting it is. So my recommendation is to anyone who likes to amazed
