Book Description

Looking for creative inspiration? Try consulting the Innovative Whack Pack. This worthy companion to the Creative Whack Pack will fire your imagination! Each card in the deck packs a two-sided creative punch. One side has a provocative insight about innovation from Heraclitus, the world's first creativity teacher. These 2,500 year old ideas - such as "You can't step into the same river twice," "Everything flows," "That which opposes produces a benefit," and "Dogs bark at what they don't understand" -will give you a fresh perspective. The other side contains a creativity strategy inspired by each insight. Roger von Oech enriches these strategies with amusing anecdotes and intriguing questions that will "whack" you out of old thought patterns. The result is a treasury of sixty creativity strategies that include: Appreciate Turbulence, Ask A Fool, See the Obvious, Beware of Hubris, and Reverse Assumptions. Play with the deck on a regular basis. Not only will it provoke original thoughts, it will also become a wise companion whose guidance you will welcome! "The Innovative and Creative Whack Packs are the indispensable salt and pepper of the creative thinker's daily diet." -Andrew Mercer

1 out of 5 stars Save Your Money.......2007-06-30

The book that these flash cards were based on, "A Whack on the Side of the Head" is great book on problem solving and creativity. These cards are not. Save your money or spend it on another book on the topic from another author, such as "Conceptual Blockbusting - A Guide to Better Ideas".

1 out of 5 stars Not Nearly as Good as the Book.......2007-05-23

After reading the book "Whack", this deck of cards was VERY disappointing.

It wasn't a "companion deck" but another condensed version of the book whose ideas were not nearly as well thought out, as well explained or put into a demonstrative use. I was expecting that the deck would help facilitate the ideas from the book -- something that could be used in a group as a teaching tool or alone as a quick means of problem solving. Not so.

The book, however, is *very* worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have book in your Creativity & Innovation Library, & must-have card deck on your desk top!.......2006-05-30

I am a raving fan of Roger von Oech's creative work as embodied in his books & card decks, namely:

Books:

- A Whack on the Side of the Head;
- A Kick in the Seat of the Pants;
- Expect the Unexpected;

Card Decks:

- Creative Whack Pack;
- Innovative Whack Pack;
- Ancient Whacks of Heraclitus;

I have used all his creativity stuff ever since I started my own strategy consulting (& book store) business in late 1991.

From my personal & professional experience, I would like to say that the entire collection of Roger von Oech's creative work has been designed to serve three strategic purposes:

- understanding - & removing - your mental blocks;
- breaking your habitual patterns;
- shifting your focus & changing your paradigms;

As a matter of fact, once you appreciate & commit to these three strategic purposes in your life, you will soon realise that there is nothing in this world to stop you from getting rid of old ideas & getting new & fresh ideas.

Allow me to quote Edward de Bono: "...the mind is habitually uncreative - it is usually preoccupied with organising masses of incoming data into convenient patterns. Once this pattern is established, then the mind tends to rely upon that pattern in future situations, in order to facilitate decision making & action in an otherwise complex world..." (The Use of Lateral Thinking).

Breaking old habitual patterns is definitely the first & foremost priority in your journey to creativity!

Once your shift your focus, you begin to change your paradigms or the way you look at the world around you. Always remember this: Your brain follows the direction of your dominant thought. Once you focus on something, that thing becomes the foreground. Everything else around it will fall into the background. Most opportunties are unfortunately hidden in the background. The moment you begin to shift your focus, you are pushing the 'foreground' into the 'background', & pulling the 'background' into the 'foreground'. Get it?

'A Whack on the Side of the Head' will help you to break through your mental blocks. They will open up your mind for innovation. This book is filled with provocative puzzles, exercises, stories & helpful tips.

'A Kick in the Seat of the Pants' takes you on a guided tour through the four stereotype roles of the creative process - Explorer, Artist, Judge & Warrior. Understanding - & applying - these roles will fire up your personal & professional creativity. Tactically, they will change your mental focus as you change to play each of the four roles. I would like to add one more role from what I have learned from the Japanese creativity experts: Antique Dealer. This singular role will allow you to combine all the four roles into one.

'Expect the Unexpected' uses thirty of Heraclitus' (the world's first creativity master) epigrams as creative springboards. It has intriguing questions designed to topple old habits of thought & fire up your imagination.

All the three card decks are basically extensions of the three books, to allow convenient usage during brainstorming sessions.

From my strategy consulting experience, these three card decks have proven to be inexhaustible sources of inspirations.

In fact, the 'Innovative Whack Pack' combines the creative power of both the 'Creative Whacks' & 'Ancient Whacks of Heraclitus'.

I strongly urge readers to seriously consider having the entire collection of Roger von Oech's creative work added to your Creativity & Innovation Library, & all the three card decks placed permanently on your desk top at all times.

5 out of 5 stars Gives You A Fresh Perspective.......2004-03-28

I've been a long time fan of the Creative Whack Pack. I recently got the Innovative Whack Pack, and have found it to be just as powerful in stimulating my creativity. I especially like the way it combines ancient wisdom with practical creativity techniques.

5 out of 5 stars A Fun Companion to the Creative Whack Pack.......2003-10-22

I'm the creator of this deck, and I had fun putting it together. It's like the Creative Whack Pack in that it has provocative and useful strategies for looking at problems and issues in a fresh way. Also, George Willett has done the illustrations (just as he has done for all of my other products). It differs from the CWP in that the stories and examples are a little longer, and also that each card has a 2,500 year old innovation insight (from Heraclitus) on one side and a creativity strategy on the other. Thus, you can use either side to provoke your thinking. In case you're interested, my two favorite insights in the deck are: "The way up and the way down are one and the same," and, "A thing rests by changing." My favorite way of using the deck is to pick one card at random in the morning, and have it be one of my innovation thoughts of the day. If you enjoyed the Creative Whack Pack, I think you'll get a kick (and some ideas) from the Innovative Whack Pack.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Quick & Fun.......2001-08-10

    This book offers very easy to implement closers that can not only be quick and fun, but of course do what closers should do - reinforce learning. Some are certainly just for fun and when there is brain overload, those also have their benefit. As most of Pike's books, this is certainly a good one to have in your library.

    5 out of 5 stars Spectacular Endings.......2001-08-07

    This is the most valuable book in my training library. It offers memorable and positive closures for any training. I recently used Name Tag Closure for a weekend long training. The participants loved it! As an added bonus, they told me it made a great icebreaker at the beginning of the training. This activity help them remain focused as they helped each other "find" the answer to their questions. It also worked as a great review at the end of a very long training.

    5 out of 5 stars Improves Retention of Trained Material.......2000-09-29

    Lynn Solem and Bob Pike teamed up to present 50 of the best closers they found and used in their Creative Training Techniques Workshops. Trainers looking for ways to end their sessions on a high note will find lots of opportunity lurking between the covers of this book.

    Each activity is coded for its use in one or more of four categories: Review Content; Action Planning; Celebration; Motivation. The instructions for each activity are clearly laid out, listing the activity's Source, Objective, Class Length, Appropriate Audience, Group Size, Amount of Time to allow for the activity, Equipment required, and the activity Process.

    I have used nearly half of these closers at one time or another, and each one has hit its mark--even when I have been afraid the activity was going south for a few minutes! The A to Z review is one of my favourites for coming back to a group after a lunch or evening break. Colored Dots is a splendid technique for giving the participants a chance to commit to using the learning points on the job. Consulting Envelopes works well for both review and real-world problem-solving, and after trying the Geometric Close about four weeks ago I cannot imagine why I did not use it earlier. Trainers looking for creative ways to have participants reviewing material--enthusiastically--will find this book a useful tool.

    4 out of 5 stars very entertaining for golf nuts .......2007-06-10

    if you read this book in one sitting and then go to the golf course for a round , you might not break 120 . however , if you read selected chapters and then try to apply the lessons you might make some real progress on your game . this book is not for beginners . this book is a compendium of " secrets " , some of which just might work , but it is no substitute for a good lesson from a qualified professional who can analyze your swing .

    5 out of 5 stars Highly Enjoyable Read .......2007-04-09

    I was surprised at this book. It reads easy but not over simplified. A book you will want to lend to your friends.

    5 out of 5 stars Hints to improve your game.......2006-02-19

    I enjoyed what this book had to offer. Rich with history and techniques. I liked the chapter on "Morrison's Secret" good photographs. Besides picking out the right type of clubs to use for your game, this book offers insight to the skill of the game. I still may fall apart in the back 9 , but this book helped me understand more about the game.

    5 out of 5 stars No shortage of secrets here.......2005-11-08

    A terrific book, full of informative tips and instruction. Find the secret that works for you. If you can't find something here to help your game, then your game may just be beyond help.

    5 out of 5 stars This book is great if you're serious about golf........2005-10-19

    And who isn't? I've been reading Golf and Golf Digest for years. Many times I've come across a tip that seemed ingenious or well-suited to my ill-arched swing and, of course, would be frustrated when, months later, I'd try to recall which issue a particular tip published and could never seem to remember. The Secret of Golf solves the problem of wishing you had a collection of the best tips and techniques introduced in the past 50 or so years. I found the photos to be cleanly demonstrative and the illustrations to be direct and easy to follow. Whether or not I'm able to implement the tips is another issue. I recommend this book!

    Book Description

    “[The book]...opens with a history and techniques, then follows with six projects and dozens of designs, accompanied by photographs and step-by-step directions. For most of the six projects, there is a simple list of generic materials needed. The mosaic furniture stands as examples of craft transformed into art.”—Booklist.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars It makes you want to try it!.......2007-01-22

    Unlike the other reviews, I have no experience in this, but I think the author made it look like fun. The paper is nicely coated and shiny, the better to show off the brilliant colors. I liked the naive, country-type patterns in some projects, while other projects were more formal, like the tables. I think this is a good first book!

    4 out of 5 stars Not very instructive, but nice pictures.......2002-04-28

    I agree with another reviewer that some of the projects shown in this book look rather sloppy, like a beginner's work might look. It seems the author got off easy, providing minimal guidance in equipment and materials, and only giving instructions for 6 simple projects. They include two terra-cotta pieces, a frame (without instructions for attaching a backing), a switchplate, tiny framed "party favor" pictures (worthless in my opinion), covered jar lids, (so-so but easy). The next larger section of the book is filled with photos of finished projects, including little boxes, frames, pots, vases, and tabletops. They are accompanied by brief comments of techniques or materials used to create them, but no instructions. The book finishes with a few pages of line-drawn design patterns, which seem unnecessary since it is easy to see and reproduce the designs by looking at the photos of the finished projects themselves.

    The only reason I gave this book a four is for its many photos of projects, and though without instructions, they are for the most part are attractive. I would not recommend it for a beginner, even though the projects are fairly simple, because it is lacking in instruction. Its best use is for browsing and sparking ideas.

    2 out of 5 stars Quick and Sloppy.......2000-03-15

    While there are some interesting design ideas and patterns, I found the book very amateurish. Most of the projects that the author illustrates how to make, using glass, are poorly put together and look rushed and haphazard. The grouting is messy and left on several glass tiles. The best examples are in the back of the book and are done by professional artists. However, there is no instruction. I would only buy this book as a last resort for inspiration. Definitely not recommeded for a beginner despite the easy projects.

      Book Description

      The European Roulette Book: Innovative Strategies for the Single Zero Roulette Wheel contains roulette information which was converted from Kimo Li's first book, The Roulette Formula: How to Predict the Exact Number, a publication about the American double zero roulette wheel. The European edition depicts a revolutionary map of the European roulette wheel head called the Global Pie.

      • The Global Pie Method is an innovative system for memorizing the numbers on the European roulette wheel head, used to track ball movement without looking at the roulette wheel head. The roulette table layout reveals ingenious layout strategies using six-pack concepts and Francois and Louis Blanc's common sense approach for determining the number sequence of the roulette wheel head.

      • The Global Pie Method offers a universal language and lingoes. Terms like the "Nuking", "Bow Tie-ing", and "Doing a Hemi" all describe specific ball movements. Other terms define multiple Global Pie strategies: Pendulum, Arrowheads and Boomerangs, Four-Leaf Clover, Clover XXX, and Numbered Partners.

      • These Global Pie strategies rely on innovative section characteristics to enhance betting strategies and limit the amount wagered to maximize optimum return.

      • The Global Star System is an independent system designed to track numbers evenly throughout the roulette wheel head. Several Global Star strategies emerge as a result of combining individual stars together: Helicopter, Numbered Partners, and Pinwheels.

      • When combined, the Global Pie Method and the Global Star System, produces a strategy called the Eclipse. The Eclipse is designed to track specific numbers that are due to come in. More importantly, when a Global Pie merges with a Global Star the exact number is exposed.

          All of the activities in Innovative Games are presented in a format that makes it easy to integrate them immediately into your program. Descriptions for every activity include the following sections:

          • Objectives--the skills that each game seeks to develop

          • Equipment--the items necessary for play

          • Playing Area--the type of facility best suited for the activity

          • Participants--the number of active players and their positions or roles

          • Game--the rules of the activity and the most pertinent details for introducing it

          When appropriate for a given activity, descriptions may also include special safety considerations, helpful hints for making the game more or less difficult, and additional rules. Some of the activities also provide "Adaptations for Younger Participants," which can be used for kids in elementary grades 3 through 5.

          In addition to presenting the 35 ready-to-use activities, the author explains six principles for creating innovative games that you can use to develop new game ideas of your own.

          So the next time you hear a complaint about doing the same old stuff in class, open up Innovative Games. It's an invaluable resource for middle and high school physical education teachers, recreation directors, church and camp program directors, and YMCA leaders.

            Book Description

            If your physical education curriculum or program suffers from "Oh, that again" syndrome, More Innovative Games will pep up your program! In this sequel to Brenda Lichtman's Innovative Games, you'll find 41 creative games to educate, stimulate, and invigorate middle and high school students.

            These games are simple to learn, easy to teach, and quick to incorporate!

            Beyond simply explaining the games, each section takes you through an organized and easy-to-follow format that includes several or all of the following key points:

            • Objective: What sport-related, health, or social skills are being developed? How can you best integrate the game into your existing program?

            • Equipment: What standard or atypical equipment is needed?

            • Playing Area: What type of facility is best suited for this activity? Can you use unique or underused spaces such as hallways to make the game seem new?

            • Participants: How many people do you need and what are their positions and roles? How many officials are needed and what are their positions and roles?

            • Game: How is the game played and what is the best way to explain it to your students? What are the rules and what safety concerns should you be aware of?

            • Helpful Hints: How can you make the game easier or more difficult depending on you students, and how do the rules change when the game is altered?

            • Violations: What is specifically against the rules and how do you handle these violations?

            • Safety Considerations: How do you prevent injury and ensure that every student follows general safety precautions?

            • Adaptations for Younger Participants: How can you adapt the game for upper elementary aged children and still provide a safe, effective learning experience?

            • Additional Rules: What new or additional rules can be applied to make the game more interesting, safe, or educational?

            Most games use standard equipment in creative ways. Additional equipment can be collected from local merchants, purchased at garage sales, or collected from your students' families.

            You can create your own innovative games, too. In chapters 1 and 2, Lichtman walks you through the process of developing you own innovative games. From the idea stage to preliminary trials with children to the final game, you'll learn a tried and true procedure for developing new games while teaching your students how to think creatively. Chapters 3 to 10 present the games.

            You'll also learn how to combine two games into one to create a new and challenging "hybrid" such as Soccer Croquet-Four Ways, Dodge Basketball, Flag Basketball, Soccer Flag Football, or Multi-Option Ball.

            More Innovative Games will give you the tools you need to keep your physical education or recreation class exciting and your students enthusiastic. Use any of these 41 games to break out of that "same old" syndrome.
