A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.

Book Description

It ought to be just a game, but basketball on the playgrounds of Coney Island is much more than that for many young men it represents their only hope of escape from a life of crime, poverty, and despair. In The Last Shot, Darcy Frey chronicles the aspirations of four of the neighborhood's most promising players. What they have going for them is athletic talent, grace, and years of dedication. But working against them are woefully inadequate schooling, family circumstances that are often desperate, and the slick, brutal world of college athletic recruitment. Incisively and compassionately written, The Last Shot introduces us to unforgettable characters and takes us into their world with an intimacy seldom seen in contemporary journalism. The result is a startling and poignant expose of inner-city life and the big business of college basketball.

5 out of 5 stars Hoop Dreams.......2006-03-29

If you like hoops you would love this story. Darcey frey the author who's also a sports writter follows the life of three young men who's dream is to become professional basketball players.Living in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn these three men are faced with durgs violence, and everything you see on the streets of Brooklyn. A very inspirational story, and a indepth look on the career of Stephon Marbury. This is a book you would want to share with a friend.

5 out of 5 stars Symphony of words.......2006-01-27

This book should be a classic, if it isn't already. As someone who hasn't a great deal of interest in basketball, I can throughly recommend it simply for the author's style. The man's prose reads like a dream as he brings the characters to life in an inimitable way. He enables you, the reader, to go right into the streets of New York and live the lives of each of his main characters, to get to know them, understand them and - in a sense - to *be* them. A definite must for your library.

5 out of 5 stars Reality Check--I LOVED this book!.......2005-12-16

The book, The Last Shot, journeys into the streets of Coney Island in New York City, and into the lives of four young men aspiring to become basketball all-stars. These boys of Coney Island are Russell Thomas, Corey Johnson, Stephon Marbury, and Tchaka Shipp, all of whom are "to-be" high-school seniors with the exception of Stephon who is yet a freshmen. Corey, Stephen, and Russell live right in the Coney Island "projects", or districts, amidst the violent gangs, drug dealers, and drunks of New York. We learn that even the police are rarely seen in this area although a reason for that is never provided. It seems as if the only way for boys to focus on positive things is through basketball. Numerous basketball courts exist in the projects but one, in particular is important to these four boys called the Garden. Countless hours are spent on this court, practicing shots, dribbling, playing pick-up games, and organized tournaments. Also playing basketball for their high school Varsity team, these young men are recruited by a large amount of NCAA basketball coaches. They all have the potential to play college ball at Division One schools but how do they deal with the negative influences that surround them daily? Missing the required 700 point SAT score would mean, sadly their hopes and dreams of playing high-level college basketball would be shattered. This story reveals the riveting truth behind where many of our NBA all-stars originate from.

The Last Shot
By. Darcy Frey

The Last Shot by. Darcy Frey takes place in the projects of Coney Island. All the characters are looking to go to a Division 1 Schools. They all have the talent but don't have the smarts to pass the SAT's. This book is a real page turner Darcy Frey is a very talented writer. I like how he actually uses an NBA superstar in this book. All the characters are great athletes. I like how it goes from Coney Island to the Nike basketball camp and follows the best player on the team Tchaka Shipp. There was no climax in this story. It shifts around so much that it couldn't really have a climax. Darcy Frey is a good sports writer. This book was rather long but it is worth reading. I give it a 5 out of 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars For Any One Who Truly Cares.......2005-08-09

This book was the best written and best depicted book I have ever read. From the beginning it was raw and real. For any one who truly cares about and loves basketball this is a must read. This is as raw and real as it gets in the basketball world.

Book Description

Rural poverty is often unseen or misperceived by outsiders. Dr Chambers contends that researchers, scientists, administrators and fieldworkers rarely appreciate the richness and validity of rural people's knowledge or the hidden nature of rural poverty. This is a challenging book for all concerned with rural development, as practitioners, academics, students or researchers.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A quick Review of the effectiveness of Chambers .......2007-06-05

Chambers is a giant in his field to be sure, but his book boasts extensive insight into the arena of development. His observations and suggestions are applicable on a grand scale as effective strategies for beginning successful development across the developing world.
By pointing out the 5 key aspects of poverty, the poverty itself, physical weakness, isolation, vulnerability, and powerlessness; Chambers offers a means in which effective development strategies can be applied to combat such factors.
Chambers is also keen on pointing out how the development community have made mistakes, and does not mince words. He is quick to point out the evils and ineffectiveness of the academic world and how they have worked against development in the past, even though the man was an academic. That criticism aside however, his points about the traps of academia, the biases transferred to the third world by outsiders with varying attitudes, and his suggestions for combating poverty across the globe make for a seminal work in the field of development policy, and is a must read for anyone who is interested in studying the development field.

    Book Description

Berlin has played a major role in world politics since the Nazi era. It was made hostage in the Cold War, and continues to be in the spotlight today as the once-again great capital of Germany. Ann Tusa's book is an engaging chronicle of the partitions of this historic city, from the administrative division by the victors against Hitler, through the building and eventual destruction of the wall.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars A weak work, careless with facts, blandly written........1998-05-01

It's been six months since I read this book and passed it on to others familiar with Berlin and its fascinating history, before and after the Cold War. All agree: this is a particularly weak work, blandly written, and, worst, careless with facts. One need only cite one blatant error, an error anyone at all acquainted with Berlin would never make: The name of the wide avenue that leads to the Brandenburg Gate, one of Europe's great boulevards, is "Strasse des 17. Juni," or "17th of June Street." This date commemorates the East German uprising of 1953, easily one of the most significant dates in Berlin's history. Ms. Tusa refers to this street as "17 July Street," and goes on to explain that on "17 July there were strikes all over the country..." With this date, and with this book, she was off by more than a month. And lest readers make the mistake of thinking this is a history of Berlin from WWII to 1989, as the subtitle states, be warned that it is really a portrayal of Berlin from WWII through the building of the Wall in 1961. The following decades are dismissed in about 40 breezy pages.

5 out of 5 stars A page turner about track and field? Even better. A page turner about one man's trials and triumph.......2006-05-30

Circle a track once. Fast as you can. Faster than anyone. Do that as your country asks'What are you?' 'Who are you with?'
If the 400 meter run is magic, Frank Murphy is a magician of a writer. He tells the story of Lee Evans, a quarter miler running for the U.S. at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. The Olympics where raised fists caused fits. Heroes and villians stride through Murphy's story, but better still, there are people captured in time, making choices without certainty as to their impact, only as to the justness of their cause.
For those who lived in that era, The Last Protest is a fresh look at men America asked to bring home gold medals, display them when asked, but not ask too much for themselves.
For those who only remember seeing a photo of two men, gloved hands clenched above them, the book is a way to understand them by understanding one man that circled that track.
The race sequences alone are worth the price of the book. Murphy writes with a novelist's voice, drawing you along with Evans as he runs through the duties he accepts and the distractions he endures. He places those battles in the context of this era "There was a time when a black man driving from one end of a southern state to the other, Alabama for example or Louisiana, would pack a lunch and carry his drink in a thermos."
    This is history writ well.

The closing book of T. R. Pearson's Neely trilogy, "The Last of How It Was" seems to ramble, but is tight as a drum. Does murder run in the family? Young Louis Benfied, Jr., listens raptly as Daddy and Momma and Aunt Sister explain.

5 out of 5 stars Like a hysterically funny Faulkner.......2001-04-10

The town of Neely, North Carolina is just as Gothic as anything Faulkner ever wrote, with murders, adultery, accidentally slaughtered mules, Stonewall Jackson, escaped convicts, dropped coffins, and Injun fights, but T. R. Pearson makes Neely one hell of a lot funnier than Yoknapatawpha County. In the final volume of the trilogy that also includes _A Short History of a Small Place_ and _Off for the Sweet Hereafter_, narrator Louis Benfield relates stories of his family as told by Louis's daddy Louis, with interruptions, corrections, and emendations from Aunt Sister, Louis's maternal great-aunt, and from Louis's mother. The story rambles like a footpath through the North Carolina hills, with sentences that continue for whole paragraphs and paragraphs that continue for pages, creating a style that seems incomprehensible on the page but which reveals its meaning when read aloud, in all its Southern baroque glory.

_The Last of How It Was_ has the flavor and feel of a long Sunday afternoon visit, sitting on the front porch, listening to family tales that don't go anyplace much or have any enormous meaning, but which, for that very reason, are nonetheless a delight.

Pearl Moscowitz's Last stand by Arthur A. Levine

How would you feel if somebody cut down trees that you planted when you were a little girl? The book I read is called Pearl Moscowitz's Last Stand. Since her mother died, there have been a lot of changes on Gingko Street. Pearl has three sisters. Their names are Selma, Velma and Wilma. The change that occurred was that the trees that they planted were cut down, all except for one. The apartment she lives in looks like a dorm. I think this s a good book for children. Pearl played poker with her sisters under the last gingko tree. The next day she was reading a book to the children on the street. A man came up to them and said, "You have to get away from under the this tree because I have to cut it down." She asked him to eat with her. He looked hungry and he didn't eat lunch. The next day he comes back and she shows him a pictures of her and her family each picture has a story. The next day he comes back and Ronnie, the next door neighbor, he put a bike lock around her and the tree and locked it. There is a big party because she's stopping the man from cutting down the tree. The news crew was there. She tells them a story about her and the tree and why she' wont let him cut down the tree. The she invites the guy who paid the man to cut down the tree and the man who was going to cut down the tree over to eat at her house. They changed the street name. To find out what happens at the party and to see what the street is called finish the book!!

    1 out of 5 stars BAD WOMAN.......2005-02-08

I did not liked this book, because she did a bad thing (Pearl).she did not respect the man that had orders to cut the tree and she fooled him by making him eat and by telling him a story about her family's photos.

      Book Description

The Last Good Time is a richly layered epic that brings to life a fascinating place, its politics, people, and culture, through the portrait of one of Atlantic City’s most famous families—the powerful, flamboyant, and ultimately tragic D’Amatos. Paul “Skinny” D’Amato created and presided over the 500 Club, the celebrated supper club that entertained thousands of Americans and helped guide the careers of the great Rat Pack performers—Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Frank Sinatra. Skinny was at the center of it all, hovering behind the scenes during the zenith of one of the world’s most notorious playgrounds.

Veteran magazine writer Jonathan Van Meter captures the volatile history of twentieth-century Atlantic City—from the days of Prohibition and smoky speakeasies to the city’s heyday of imported Hollywood glamour and glitz after World War II; from the near demise of the resort in the 1970s to the city’s current era of legal “gaming” and dazzling high-tech hotel/casinos.

Skinny D’Amato avoided the public eye whenever possible, though he was perhaps the most important person in the history of Atlantic City, where his nightclub served as the ultimate backroom for the big players of entertainment, politics, sports, and the Mob. Skinny is rarely acknowledged as part of the Rat Pack, but he was at the center of its creation, its mentor. It was Skinny who taught Sinatra how to hold a cigarette, tip big, be cool. He paired Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin for the first time at his 500 Club, and on any given night back in the 1950s and 1960s, you’d find Elizabeth Taylor, Toots Shor, the Gabor sisters, Joe DiMaggio, Milton Berle, Liberace, Grace Kelly, Nat King Cole, and just about every big player in the underworld hanging out by the bar or in the back rooms. Skinny was a link between politicians—including John F. Kennedy—entertainers, and the Mob and was the subject of constant surveillance by the FBI and tax investigators. Whether he was in the Mob or not, Skinny was the ultimate connected guy, a gentleman’s gentleman, a passionate gambler who had a special touch that brought bigpeople together so that they could have a good time.

As Van Meter evokes the ever-evolving landscape of Atlantic City, he shows us how the D’Amato family, like other larger-than-life American families during the last century, experienced a changing wheel of fortune, seeing great moments of wealth, power, and personal attainment, as well as all manner of human tragedy. In the space of a few years, Skinny’s beloved wife, Bettyjane, died of a brain aneurysm at a relatively young age; the 500 Club burned to the ground; and, perhaps most devastating of all, his son, Angelo, was convicted of brutally murdering two people. With the last of the good times behind him, Skinny retreated to his Ventnor, New Jersey, mansion, taking his card game with him, emerging to see his Rat Pack friends, and, in the process, becoming a living symbol of how cool it all was once upon a time in America.

Van Meter expertly renders one of the great untold tales of modern America, a character portrait of both an extraordinary time and place, and the Zelig-like man who hovered over it all. The Last Good Time is a classic tale of the whiskey-soaked dark side of America’s mid-century popular culture.

      5 out of 5 stars Jonathan rolls a 7........2007-06-26

The new and the old Atlantic City!

A fast read from the days of the old Steel Pier right up to the Resort Casinos that line the Boardwalk today.

Van Meter starts this journey as he arrives in town to work at Atlantic City Magazine. He gets word about a "sale" at the home of the late Paul "Skinny" D'Amato, the owner of the famous "500 Club." This is 1986 and Atlantic City is now a gambling mecca.

Van Meter quickly becomes enthralled with D'Amato and the history of the city and figures he's a got a pretty good book on his hands. He's right!

The Frank Sinatra/Dean Martin/Marilyn Monore/ Mob connections drive the narrative and the reader gets caught up in their world. Van Meter keeps the pace with the rich and famous and their connection to D'Amato rolling along, and you get to go for the ride.

Damn good ride! All 296 pages of it. Recommended!

4 out of 5 stars A bit of AC history.......2005-04-28

What a great story of a city (Atlantic City) and a man (Skinny D'Amato) who was larger than life. I enjoyed the rise and fall and re-rise of AC.

I was swept up with the history of Victorian Era resort and wish that the old hotels were still there today. I'm a sucker for old, historic buildings. To read about the decline of AC and the revitilisation with the casinos in the late 1970s/early 1980s was also interesting reading.

At the center of it all was Skinny - friend to the stars, on the fringe of the mob; an interesting character to say the least. This is a "two thumbs up" book - recommend to anyone interested in nearly a century of American history.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Time, Place and People........2005-03-15

Atlantic City was "THE" place at one time, The 500 Club was very famous, the people were famous or trying to be. My wife was born (1945) and raised in A.C., her relatives hung out at the club. A better writer with better research could have written a great book, I bought 3 as gifts before I had read it. I should have bought one and passed it around. Van Meter scratched a surface of a jewel, not deeply. I hope another writer can cut and polish a multi-faceted gem out of this subject.

      4 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2003-10-15

You won't be disapointed with this book!!!! The author integrates all of the interesting details of AC in the past 100 years without boring the reader. Any casual reader or historian will love the clever writing style and attention to detail and context of AC - a town with a dynamic history. The tale of Skinny's life and the 500 should be made into a movie!!!!

After reading The Last Good Time, I was prompted to making a trip, now knowing the history of the town that can't really be what it was and is still struggling with where it needs to be in the future (author's forward).

1 out of 5 stars Save your money!.......2003-09-25

A Very disappointed read! I grew up in NYC (Manhattan) and had heard about the 500 Club from my Father, friends and relatives. This book did not do it justice. I could not even stay focused on this it was soooooo boring at times. Unlike Atlantic City should have been in those times. To give the book some credit there were a few interesting tidbits about Joe Di Maggio, Toots Shor, and Sinatra and Crew! It was nothing I could not have learned watching Biography.
