4 out of 5 stars Dragonlance Classics, Vol. 2 (DL6-DL9) review.......2001-03-03

This set of modules follows and begins the second of the Dragonlance Chronicles, whereby the PCs quest to find one of the Dragon Orbs. Book contains four modules to play and recommended for 7-8 characters of levels 6-9. It introduces many new creatures of krynn (such as Thanoi (Walrus-Men), Ice Bears and many others) and new magical items (such as Frostreavers, Glasses of Arcanist, Orb of the Silver Dragon and others).

3 out of 5 stars Not following with the DL series.......2002-03-05

You should have to have read all the DL books in order to write for them. I did not even realize this story was about Tanis's mother until I read all the other reviews because in one of the prelude books (Tanis The Shadow Years, I think) he goes back in time and meets his mother and it is nothing like this. Anyways my other complaint is that his mother throughout the entire book wants to be rescued and hates the people who captured her then in the last 20 pages all the sudden she hates her husband and loves Brand. It was a bit of a stretch for me.

1 out of 5 stars was this even dragonlance?.......2001-12-28

Wow, im really disappointed in NVB's latest work.

I really wish some of these dragonlance authors would do a little more research. I had recently finished a good dragonlance book called kindred spirits. the end of that books talks about how kethrenans brother was the mastermind behind the entire affair leading to tanis being born.
This book acts like that book doesnt even exist.....kindred spirits? WHAT kindred spirits.
another small fact that the author included into this book that shows a complete lack of research: she states the hill dwarves were formed because of the cataclysm when almost every other dragonlance book out there talks about (including the dwarven nations trilogy) how the hill dwarves were formed right from the beginning of thorbardins existance

This kind of misinformation is terribly distracting from an otherwise descent story. NVB definitly has the story writting ability but she MUST know a world before making up facts about it

the book did have good characters and good flow. as i mentioned before the auther is definitly talented and I would love to see her write more books for dragonlance in the future.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but leaves questions!.......2001-10-19

First and foremost! I've been reading Dragonlance with a vengance since 1992. I'm not of the group that believe Weis and Hickman are the only two who should write the Dragonlance saga. I've read almost all the books with the exceptions of the new books that haven't been published yet (Which I will when they come out). With this in mind, I found the story to be very enjoyable! I thought the plot was exceptable. I also think that the author tackled a big subject and did an exceptable job with it. Like one of the other reviewers that I have read, I think that the secondary characters made the book. Which I think works for this book. To me the main characters were the main characters because of circumstance rather than strengthness of charcter. I loved the grizzly dwarf with a past. I am curious about a few things because of this book. I want to know what happens when Elansa and Char get to the Qualinesti homeland. I felt the book should of went on. Also I felt that the characters needed more explanation, such as Ley and his daughter. Why was Ley a Dark Elf, and who was his human lover. In conclusion I want to say that I enjoyed this book and the secondary characters. I feel that although this story isn't my favorite in the Dragonlance saga, it is in the dragonlance saga and is useful in understanding the happenings on Krynn and it's inhabitants along it's lengthy timeline! Read it, it's worth it!

2 out of 5 stars poetry??.......2001-06-04

First off I would like to say that this book does have a good story line, that is if you can understand it. The writings that this author (Berberick) uses is not easy to follow for she uses a poetic type of wording that is not typical to the dragonlance series. When I try to read the words to creat that visual in my head of the story it just scrambles it form the reverse writing that the author uses. It tends to distract you from the real story and leave you in the fog where every thing is blurred. If you are a dragonlance fan then you will read this, If not then pass on this one for it does not work for me to be a real dragonlance book.

1 out of 5 stars Hello?..Nancy did you ever read the orginal Dragonlance?.......2001-05-31

Book was wrote decently...Would be a lot higher on my list if the characters had not been Tanis's Parents...All thoughout the orginal series of Dragonlace and even the follow-up in Legends did it tell the reader that Tanis's mother had been raped and died in childbirth.....the actual story itself I'd give 3 stars to but just knowing that it was a lie ticks me off....who are we to believe? The creators (Weis and Hickman) or Nancy?.....

5 out of 5 stars Keep things in perspective...........2000-08-04

Firstly, I am glad that the previous reviewer enjoyed the art enclosed. However, art is subjective and I have to admit that I was disappointed in the portayals of the characters in pictures. Elmore is still my favorite DL artist. One of the reason I picked Krynn as the world I will build an epic campaign upon is the art associated with it. If you are wanting to run the original adventures, track down the modules through friends, auctions, and used book stores. But still get this book in order to expand your knowledge of the chronicles and such. In my case I will be running a campaign that is not going to follow the chronicles. However the heroes of the lamce will be there doing what they always do. If the player characters encounter them, any number of things could happen. I am gathering as many resourcesas possible in order to be prepared for whatever may come. That is what makes this book essential. My player characters may wind up having to take over for Tanis, Raistlin, and Tas if they cause trouble. Need better maps? Track down the atlas, trail map, original modules or just use your own creativity.

1 out of 5 stars Really, Really BAD.......2000-05-29

This Campaign really is bad. It is just an attempt to feed off the popularity of dragonlance books. I would recomend some other books that are more organized. Evberything is not easy to understand and is far too boring. There is no reason someone should get this book, it is far to boring to come of use. The only good point is the map of Krynn.

4 out of 5 stars Great for old-timers and newbies alike!.......2000-05-14

The Dragonlance Saga is the longest-standing TSR series ever, the archetype of "classic" AD&D. With the advent of the SAGA rules system, however, and the absence of Weis and Hickman in the creative process until recently, Dragonlance has taken a turn for the worse. However, this book is a great way to get back to the basics of what made Dragonlance and AD&D great back in the late 80s. Old-timers can play the epic again in a stream-lined, comprehensive book, made new by the inclusion of SAGA-style rules. Classic AD&D rules are also provided, though I recommend giving SAGA a shot, even if you're not into the Fifth Age products. Those new to the Dragonlance series can take part in what made it so great. The Chronicles and Legends novels have seen their third or fourth reprint for good reason.

I do have a few gripes about the material. I suggest that the referee running the adventure be familiar with the novels and make suitable changes as he sees fit. In some ways, this adventure follows the original adventure modules more than it does the novels, meaning that the same inconsistencies exist, even though Dragonlance Classics does include several sections explaining how the plot was advanced in the novels. I advise making some changes to the statistics of the characters to better reflect the novels. If you have any of the expansion material for Fifth Age, you can still use some of it to enhance your use of this product--there are simply a few adjustments to be made, which are not difficult at all.

In short, any Dragonlance or AD&D fan looking for a quality product should seriously consider this one. They are few and far between.

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia.......2000-04-27

I read the Dragonlance Chronichles nearly ten years ago now, but I've just recently started playing D&D. I can tell you that this book is great no matter what angle you approach it from. As a reader it goes into details that were never covered in the novels, like what happened at the Icewall. As a player and more recently a DM this book provides what are in my opinion some of the finest written D&D adventures.

And don't let the SAGA rule system turn you off, the book includes regular AD&D stats for everything as well.

I can't recommend this enough.

I loved this book. It is a source book with recipes and music and general info on Krynn. Any dragonlance lover should read this! Now!

4 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, but it was good nonetheless........1998-11-02

This book includes the Holidays of Krynn, lots of songs, very good recipes (The Kender Wild Rice Delight was rather interesting...), and lots of journals/short stories. It's a must for any DL fan, but is pretty much an expansion of "Leaves from the Inn of the Last Home", which was better than this. However, they are both good.

5 out of 5 stars If you want to know ALL about Dragonlance... This is it..........1998-01-22

The History of Dragonlance is an all-encompassing follow-up to the immensly popular "Leaves from the Inn of the Last Home" More songs, poems, histories, interviews (with Heroes Tasslehoff Burrfoot and Flint Fireforge), "Serfing the Net" with the Gnomes of Mount Nevermind, and the ever-popular "More Recipe's from Tika's Cookbook", make this an excellent companion book to the Dragonlance Series. As a stand-alone book it has valuable information for the old readers and new readers alike. If you are really into Dragonlance, and would like a excellent book for source marterials, this is THE book for you. Chris Martin

4 out of 5 stars Well done.......2006-08-06

Having been a huge fan of the original DragonLance books back in high school, I couldn't wait to read this one, and it didn't disappoint me. I enjoyed finding out what it was that made Dalamar become the mage he was. If you're a DL fan, I think you'll like this one, too.

1 out of 5 stars Too many inconsistencies with existing DL.......2004-09-30

Had Nancy Varian Berberick played D&D before or read up on Dragonlance before writing this?

One of the most painful moments in this book is reading about Dalamar taking out a Blue Dragon by himself, by casting lightning bolts!

There is also the parts about not one but many dwarven mages running around the realms.

The portion about Dalamar taking the Test at the Tower of High Sorcery was not too bad though.

The book started off well enough. After a prologue which basically recapitulated what readers of Legends already know, the first chapter set Dalamar as a lowly servant in a caste-rigid society of Silvanesti. The elven kingdom was under threat by the dragonarmy - and Dalamar suggested strategy to hit the rear of the enemy when it was clear the elves were overpowered. The strategy was carried out but the sheer might of the dragon against the elves meant it could not turn the tide after all.

The book followed with Dalamar fleeing along with the rest of refugees from Silvanesti to Ergoth where the haughty elves enslaved the wild elves inhabitants of Ergoth.

Through the process, until the elves returned to Silvanesti, the author made repeated shows of Dalamar losing faith and totally put off with the Silvanesti's obsession with the worship of Eli, or Paladine. However, the true clerics had long ago been removed from Krynn prior to the Cataclysm and elven societies were supposed to have given up on the gods as well. They may preserve the memories, but no cleric received any spells until (1) the Dark Queen granted her followers spells, and (2) Goldmoon became a cleric of Mishakal through the staff and the Platinum Discs were recovered. Clearly the author missed out an integral aspect of the settings of Dragonlance. An author may reserve her own creative license, but when writing within an established fictional setting, should either comply or set up her own.

4 out of 5 stars Dalamar: the Early Years.......2003-03-30

This Dragonlance Classics book tells the story of Dalamar's youth in Silvanesti and his eventual calling to the dark arts. He is cast out of his Elven home and left on his own to pursue his fate. He goes to the Tower to be tested, and is willingly used by the leadership of the Tower to complete a task that would allow more than one person the revenge they seek. Berberick's telling is good although her characterization of Dalamar falls slightly short of his personality from what we know of him from other stories. Her perspective of the fall of Silvanost and Lorac's Nightmare is insightful and well written, and ties well into the Chronicles storyline. This is a good book for someone who has already read the core books of the Dragonlance series.

5 out of 5 stars A great addition to the Dragonlance line!.......2002-12-21

This is definitely one of Nancy Berberick's best -- which, as a longtime fan of her writing, is saying a lot. The evolutionary years of one of Dragonlance's most intriguing, disturbing characters are finally revealed, taking the reader through the tortuous process of shaping the man he will become. This book is pure delight, from start to finish, and sure to please the many fans of the Dragonlance line!

3 out of 5 stars Misrepresents.......2002-03-07

This story is intriquing and an interesting read if you enjoyt he character Dalamar however there are several flaws that I found to be distracting and disappointing. First of all, the portrayal of te Silvanesti elves was harsh to the point where you could hardly call them "good" at all. The author seems to make the assumption that if you fight the "bad" guys, in this case a number of evil wizards and a dragon Highlord that makes you "good," which is not true at all. The Chronicles series sets you up to realize that the Silvanesti are incredibly snooty and uptight, but not cold and unconcerned about themselves. Yes, they have avoided the outside world and show disinterest there but former authors of the series never through out the belief they walk over each other on a daily basis. It is an assumption i believe this author got wrong. Also, it describes Dalamar's path into darkness in a fairly unbelievable way. Dalamar is potrayed as in intelligent individual who suddenly turns to darkness for reasons that just come with living. Also, at times when Dalamar is portrayed at his darkest, you get the feeling you are reading about Raistlin and not him. In Legends and the Summer Flame, Dalamar has feelings, good ones. He is a dark elf mage not some power hungry warlord.

In short, this portrayal of Dalamar is only believable if you change the character we know as Dalamar from the other books and since you probably pick up this book because you liked the character in the other books, then it is probably not all that worthwhile. However it is not a bad read, just don't expect too much insight into the character in the title. As mentioned in other reviews, this has a lot more to do with events than the character Dalamar and when it does talk about Dalamar, it does so poorly.

Book Description

Weapon of the Dark Queen

Against a darkened cloud it comes, framed by thunder and lightning, soaring over the ravaged land: the flying citadel, mightiest power in the arsenal of the dragon highlords.

In an age of war, an evil wizard learned the secret of creating these castles in the air and sought to use them to gain power over all Krynn. Against him were ranged a red-robed magic-user, a cleric, an ancient warrior, and -- naturally -- a kender.

5 out of 5 stars The citadel is a great book.......2001-06-21

This is a great book for anyone to read. You follow tyros serene rapp(the kender of course) Captain bakal valkyn and General cadrio not to mention the dragons and flying citadels. I think this was a great book to read because of the the action and fightning and spells. I liked how the gargoyles got to be set free will they're leader was killed to save the cleric.my favorite character was rapp the kender because he was so fun and playful and took care of griffons that he found.

5 out of 5 stars Very nicely done!.......2001-05-02

I've only read about 10 or 15 DL books but of the ones I've read, this book is one of my favorites. I like the use of Gargoyles, since none of the others I've read included these odd creatures. This was the first book I read including gold and silver dragons. I chose this book because it has dragons on the cover and it had a captivating summary on the back. I also like wizards and magic. I just didn't like how three of the four godd dragons died only halfway into the story. All in all I would recommend this book to anyone liking the DragonLance series.

4 out of 5 stars A decent novel, but not Knaak's best work.......2000-11-23

Richard A. Knaak is my favorite author, so I wasted no time in getting a copy of this book (also signed by Mr. Knaak himself). Knaak once again makes use of gargoyles (which he previously used in the books Ruby Flames and Frostwing), a creature that normally isn't seen or mentioned much in the Dragonlance world, so kudos to Mr. Knaak for adding some creativity and change to the DL world. The story in itself is quite decent, and even when it seems like the book is coming to a close, Knaak manages to stretch the story out another 50 or 100 pages. The low points of the book are the characters. The main bad guy, Valkyn is a typical 'Bwa-ha-ha-ha I'm going to conquer the world' villian, and the two high ranking officers Bakal and Cadrio don't differ too much in personalities even though one is supposed to be good and the other evil. However, Knaak does experiment some with the main character Tyros by working with an arrogant character, whereas many of Knaak's other characters in past books were either somewhat out of their heads/minds (i.e. the Dutchman, Shade), or fairly level headed (Cabe Bedlam). One thing I missed was much of the inner contemplation that many of his other characters had, but this book didn't contain nearly as much of this critique.

All and all, this book was worth my time and money, and is probably better than most of the other Dragonlance books out there. For fans of Dragonlance and Knaak's writing, this would be a good choice. However for someone just getting into fantasy or Knaak's writing, picking up a copy of The Legend of Huma would be a better bet for now (then one can pick up The Citadel later).

4 out of 5 stars Citadel is great! Another Knaak triumph!.......2000-11-13

I am an avid Dragonlance reader for many years and have always included Knaak in my best authors list since the "Legend of Huma." His new book is a fun read that is anything but clesche. What always made Knaak different than other Dragonlance authors is that he uses different aspects of fantasy. The gargoyles are a creature never before used in Dragonlance. Any other author would simply have had draconians. But Knaak strives to make his novels interesting and not just another Dragonlance quest. I gave it four stars because I thought the characters could have been better. Captain Bakal is really nothing special and the villain Cadrio isn't very impressive. But with gargoyles, griffons, and a monstrous flying citadel; this book includes a stirring story full of action and excitement. Not Knaak's best, but certainly a good read not to miss.

2 out of 5 stars Painfull to read........2000-10-28

I am a Dragonlance fan, and I've read most of the books. Although English was not my favorite subject, I always scored high on English Comprehension Exams. What does that have to do with Mr. Knaak's novel? Everything. I found myself in agony reading just the first two chapters. Too many sentances seemed to have been thrown together on a whim. It baffles me how this got past the editors prior to being published.

Book Description

Who killed Ambassador Bloodarrow?

When the Lord of Tarsis finds himself with a politically volatile murder on his hands, he turns to the three most expendable inhabitants of the city of a solution. A mercenary, a poet-assassin, and a thief might not be everyone's first choice for detectives. But they find they're quite good at bringing murderers to justice.

Perhaps a little too good . . .

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad, but not Great either!.......2004-06-15

Slightly better than both Murder in Cormyr and Murder in Halruaa, but still a bit of a disappointment! Well written, but not the kind of book that you'll have trouble putting down. The plot and setting are ok, but that's it, mediocre; nothing more, nothing less. It is very unfortunate that the Murder Series came to an end before the writing of Murder in Ravens Bluff and WotC should reconsider their decision now that years have gone by and maybe resurrect the project, but considering the poor work included in these books I can at least understand why they did so back then. In conclusion, the heroes are average, the villains are very weak, the plot is ok and the writing is good. My advice, read it only after you're done reading most of the other Dragonlance books such as in authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends trilogies, and you are still in need of more Krynn related material; at least you'll get a slight hint/taste of Ansalon.
PS What was the point of including Badar in the book? The character's contribution to the plot is nil.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty painful reading.......2001-04-09

I tried my hardest to ignore the bad reviews here on this book...but it was pretty bad. I felt like I was reading a scooby doo book. Especially towards the end when they almost literally pull a mask off of someone. I guess I suggest this to dragonlance lovers of course. and I suggest this to mystery book lovers. But if your looking for action or strong character development, its not here. Also while i can usually look past dragonlance flaws, its really hard to accept, not just one baby dragon who may have woken up on accident from its stasis, its very hard to accept that its mother would come searching for it. This makes me think that Mr. Roberts hasnt, in fact, done much research on the dragonlance world, which is disappointing.

3 out of 5 stars Good enough, but not accurate relative to history of Krynn.......1999-10-20

The book was enjoyable to read and the caracters were interesting, but one thing is dead wrong with this Dragonlance novel: it happens between the Cataclysm and the War of the Lance, a time at which there no dragons (they were gone since a thousand years and more, see Legend of Huma), yet Roberts has put a black dragon right in the middle of his book. The dragon appears and nobody knows that they are supposed to be children's tales, not real beasts, nobody is affraid, nobody find this unusual at all!

So much for history...

3 out of 5 stars Great story, but the ending dissapoints........1999-06-09

Roberts has created some vibrant characters in this mystery about three misfit's given the responsiblity to solve a murder in the midst of a near-siege of Tarsis. The personal history surrounding Ironwood, the mercenary, and Stunbog, the former mage, is especially rich. The book leaves the reader guessing at the identity of the murderer all the way to the very end of the novel. And this is where I felt the book failed. A good mystery novel should present all the clues and motives needed to solve the crime before it reaches the last few pages. 'Murder in Halruha' and 'Murder in Cormyr' serve as very good examples of this. But 'Murder in Tarsis' dissapoints, because it presents key clues and most importantly the murderer's motive at the very end of the novel. The reader never has a chance to deduce who the killer is or why he/she did it. That's why someone will read mystery novels versus other type of novels after all. Because they want to test their powers of deduction. This book never gives the reader the oppurtunity to do so. An even better mystery novel will redirect or mislead the reader subtlely to suspect other characters of being the culprit. But without any real clues, save at the ending of the novel, the reader doesn't even know who to suspect in this story. The ending also lacked the excitement many have come to associate with suspense stories. Roberts has a good writing style and he knows how to create interesting characters, but his ability to create mystery novels is sorely lacking. If you are looking for a good fantasy mystery novel I highly suggest either 'Murder in Halruha' or 'Murder in Cormyr". Better yet, read them both.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but definetly not great........1998-11-29

This book was good, but as I said, not great. The ending was just too abrupt. It was as if a god just came down and whispered the answers in their ears, and *POOF*, so-and-so killed so-and-so because of such-and-such. The rest of the book was quite good, though.
