"Don't quit the day job", as Doyle Brunson said recently in an interview.

I bought this book some time ago and enjoyed it thoroughly. It is a must read for poker buffs who are looking for ways to upgrade their game. It is important to realize that even Doyle changes up his game from time to time, and cannot be relied upon to predictably do what he recommends here.
In my opinion, much of what Doyle recommends has value. Pay attention to his comments about what strategy works for which stakes.

Have fun out there but remember how nice it is to keep eating and living indoors.

4 out of 5 stars power poker strategy.......2007-08-27

very good book. very interesting. only problem. doyle brunson plays top notch poker players and makes bets of multiple thousands of dollars. some of his strategies won't work in your average 10 dollar buy in hold em tournament that you hold in your garage once a week. doyle brunson is a risky player who gambles alot. people might fold at your bluff if they are looking at a 3,000 dollar bet but at your house, where people only have to pay 4 black chips and 2 blues to see the flop, they are more likely to call. i guess basically what i'm saying is that no poker strategey works on every type of player you will encounter. But the book mentions this fact many times. good reading? yes. have i won more pots because of it? maybe a few.

4 out of 5 stars poker made easy? part I.......2007-08-17

NOT for beginners. This was, and still is, a must have for any serious poker player. Things you learn from pros and the like and well worth the read.

4 out of 5 stars It's enough to be worth the money........2007-07-07

Doyle Brunson's Super System uses up about a fourth of this book, but it is enough. I don't feel cheated about the three quarters that weren't about what the title says. Just a couple of hours reading "the rules" and I have completely different thoughts while I'm watching poker on TV. That's called a new perspective. It's more fun for me when I'm not struggling to figure out what the players are thinking and doing, or trying to do. It's more interesting when you know when somebody is "breaking the rules".

I don't intend to ever play poker and I don't intend to learn the book. I just wanted to spend less time being baffled. This book was enough to accomplish that.

3 out of 5 stars Can we get a copyeditor, please?.......2007-07-05

Doyle Brunson, Super/System: A Course in Power Poker (Cardoza, 1978)

First off: whoever did the typography for this book, and then let it sit as-is for thirty years, really should be put up against a wall and shot. It's terrible. There's way too much bold, way too much italic, and way too many seemingly arbitrary switches between the two. Many times, a phrase starts off in bold and ends in italic, or vice-versa. Before the next edition of this book, someone needs to get in there with a copy-editor's pen and give these six hundred five pages a thorough going-over. As it stands, the book is well nigh unreadable, and that has nothing whatever to do with its content.

As for its content, well, that's a different story. A lot of this will seem like basic strategy to the self-taught player who's been around for a few years, but it's a gold mine for the beginner. Confused by when and how to play suited connectors in a no-limit hold'em game? Brunson will tell you. Wondering what all the fuss is over deuce-seven lowball? You'll find out here. What are the differences between a limit hold'em ring game and a no-limit tournament? (If you think there aren't many, I suggest not wandering into one if you specialize in the other if you expect to keep your money.) It's all laid out for you.

The one thing that may bug some readers (aside from the awful typography) is that a decent portion of the book is devoted to the now-almost-dead game of five-card draw. But hey, if you're not reading it with the intention of reviewing it later, and you never play five-card draw, you can just skip it, right? Also, remember that this book is thirty years old, and some games that weren't popular in Vegas, California, and Texas are not represented. To me, the biggest hole is the lack of a section on pot-limit variants, but they didn't become popular until Omaha did; that sort of thing is what Super/System 2 is for. ***, having had one star knocked off for the awful editing/proofreading.

1 out of 5 stars The Power of Early Speed (Elements of Handicapping) .......2007-09-30

I can only half-finished but will not continue the book. If the people believe or love statistic records, the book is for them. Half of the book is stats records for USA dirt track ( unfortunately I am living in Australia ). I cannot enjoy the book.

    3 out of 5 stars Interesting presentation.......2006-08-24

The title says it all in that early speed is the ultimate bias. It's like in the movie Top Gun where Tom Cruise says "I feel the need, the need for speed." The stats of the sucess of early speed don't lie, & this book presents an interesting way of compiling them with an emphasis that includes field size. And a large part of the book presents charts on trainers, jockeys, etc. But concentrating on the 1st call only without the all important 2nd call & no use of fractions means that this work as providing raw numbers is only a starting point for further research. The books of Ainslie, Beyer, Davidowitz & Brohammer should be studied first, as while this effort presents a formula for early speed points, the best system is that one that compiles information & experiances using the most complex computer, the one above the shoulders.

    4 out of 5 stars Speed Kills.......2006-08-21

I liked the book mostly for the Klein speed figures, I have applied them with some success. I was disappointed though when I figured out that it was pretty uneccessary to figure them myself, TVG for example has speed figures that almost exactly mirror what I came up with using the formula from the book. But it did give me a new respect for early speed that I will continue to use in my handicapping.

3 out of 5 stars Early speed is important. However, what is the meaning of the formulas in this book?.......2006-07-22

I agree that early speed is important in horse racing and in particular horse racing on dirt. Klein Speed Points and Klein Track Bias Numbers as mentioned in this book give the horse racing fans some kinds of objective measurement and idea on how the speed of a race will look like and the likelihood that a horse will perform better because of the favourable change in the pace of a race as well as track bias. However, the author of this book does not explain how the formulas used to derive Klein Speed Points and Klein Trace Bias Numbers are created.

Once again, I would like to stress that just knowing early speed is not enough. This is only one part of horse racing. Moreover, if everyone focuses on early speed evaluation, the inefficieny in the "horse racing market" will disappear and the profit will also disappear.

This book is OK to read, but as an experienced horse racing fans who have read many books on handicapping I found no surprise in this book.

4 out of 5 stars A fabulous piece of research.......2006-04-12

Handicappers and writers have long talked about the importance of early speed, but now Klein brings a massive research project to the table to show exactly how powerful this factor is. Most handicapping books bring select examples or limited samples of a few hundred races results to the table, but Klein calls on the Daily Racing Form database to inclued over 1.6 million starters. He then details by track, condition, and class to provide more insight into return on investment for each. The idea isn't revolutionary, but the data that backs up his ideas leave no doubt as to the "Power of Early Speed." Klein's speed points appear on the surface to be better than Quirin's technique that he developed 20+ years ago.

I wish Klein had given his point technique somewhat of a test run and provided results of his test. It's easy to look back and talk about return on investment for early leads after the race is run, but I would like some proof of how effective the Klein points are at identifying leaders because that is what will produce results.

    Book Description

With compelling detail, Without Reservation tells the stunning story of the rise of the richest Indian tribe in history.

In 1973, an old American Indian woman dies with nothing left of her tribe but a 214-acre tract of abandoned forest. It seems to be the end of the Mashantucket Pequot tribe. But it is just the beginning. Over the next three decades, the reservation grows to nearly 2,000 acres, home to more than 600 people claiming to be tribal members.  It has also become home to Foxwoods, the largest casino in the world, grossing more than $1 billion a year.

Without Reservation reveals the mysterious roots of today's Pequot tribe, the racial tension that divides its members, and the Machiavellian internal power struggle over who will control the tribe's funds. Author Jeff Benedict brings to us the deal makers, the courtroom machinations, the trusts and betrayals.

Now, with remarkable new information, the paperback brings us up-to-date on these revelations, which lead to state and federal investigations and calls for congressional hearings.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best ever in nonfiction.......2006-07-24

This is one of the best nonfiction historical books I have ever read. Jeff Benedict is able to convey to the reader the most important details regarding the birth of Foxwoods in a manner which holds the reader's attention as if you were reading a murder mystery. The role of the federal government in creating this multibillion dollar industry is clearly spelled out and incredibly well documented. Kudos to Jeff Benedict for his outstanding research and thorough investigation of the Pequots.

4 out of 5 stars At what costs?.......2006-04-19

I read this book on the suggestion of a friend. It definately is a pager turner and I couldn't put it down until I finished.

As an enrolled member of a 'casino' tribe I see why such a book would be written about a tribe rising to power through gaming. Afterall, Indians are not entitled to this type of wealth. We're supposed to reside on our little enclaves of land and be alcoholics and live close to nature and I ask why can't Indians have wealth? We didn't make the laws and neither did the Pequots. The Pequots just used the laws to their advantage and made it big. Why shouldn't the Pequots be entitled to justices of the land?

However, I can see the otherside of the fence as well. At what costs did this wealth and power come to a tribe that is suspicious of being a true Indian tribe? I'm not naive. It was all done for good purposes in the beginning, but once instant wealth came their way, all sense of what makes a tribe a tribe was lost to the bigger financial picture. The first thing that is cut when an audit happens is to cut the museum budget. The one thing that can disproove the skepticism of them being a real tribe is cut so that members can keep their pockets lined. No sense of community is in the hearts of this tribe because they'd be looking out for the welfare of the future generations.

But when reading this book, if you choose to, is to attempt to put all biases aside and see what this book (and the others written on the same topic) show...that this book does an incredible job of describing the legal and political forces in opposition to each other that led to the creation, and then to the interpretation and application of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. No other book has done a better job of illustrating the distinction between federal Indian law on the books and federal Indian law in practice than this one. It's a fascinating blueprint for how Indian tribes can leverage law, policy, and politics--if they are shrewd--to achieve an almost unimagineable degree of contemporary political and material power. The brilliance of the Pequots is that they figured out how to use white law and institutions to their particular advantage, and this book describes just how they did it. It is fascinating!! But also to Indian tribes reading this book, let this be a lesson in what NOT to do when instant wealth comes one's way.

1 out of 5 stars Bad populist writing.......2005-11-11

Yeah ..this is unfortunate that book sells so well with such a writing!! And the topic.. and so-called investigation>>> Please.. the author would not even filed his interviews! This is no investigation to me... this is populism.. that is all!!!!

I am not American , and not native american, so I guess I am neutral!
Do NOT Give this author any more money.. rather read real academic research about native casinos: such AS "INDIAN gAMING : WHO WINS" edited by Mullis and Kamper or the Eadington book about Indian Gaming and the Law!!

    2 out of 5 stars A Tendentious Book.......2004-02-24

Evidently the Pequots didn't speak with this guy. I can see why. The book is really tendentious. I'd suggest instead "Hitting The Jackpot" by a former Washington Post reporter. I heard about it in the local newspaper and it's very good. Much more informed and balanced and powerful. Whichever book you like, get educated on this!

2 out of 5 stars Politics Skews intent and accuracy as well as money.......2004-02-19

I hope that as readers of this book people might venture into doing research on of their own before taking the word of a man that was trying to get "funded" by a White Casino Owner in an area close enough to be affected by Fox Wood, and was trying to run for Governor?

This book is really very bad, full of non-sequiturs and won't help you with your game one little bit.

    3 out of 5 stars Interesting 100 pages in a 250-page book........2005-12-26

This book aims to marry "The Psychology of Poker" by Schoonmaker, with Caro's Book of Poker Tells. The overriding theme is that Caro's Tells have to be interpreted in terms of the personality of the person making the tell and the specific circumstance when the suspected tell is being made.

The author presents six personality types, that corresponds to Schoonmaker's matrix of Tight/Loose and Passive/Aggressive play. The difference is that McKenna bases it on personality type, instead of Poker play. However, he shows that the latter is a reflection of the former, so both systems are analogous. (McKenna comes up with six types because he distinguishes between extreme Loose/Aggressive (which he terms "Party Hardy", instead of Maniac) and a less extreme form that he terms "High Roller". Likewise, the extreme form of Tight/Passive he associates with a Loner personality, and a less extreme form that he characterizes as a "System Player".) He describes each type in terms of: their perception of life, their personality style, strengths and weaknesses, general body language, traits and preferences, and the percent of the US population that fit each category. He not only discusses how to identify these types (as is done by Schoonmaker), but goes a step beyond to discuss how they relate to others, how to relate to them and how to setup a pleasing atmosphere for them.

My main fault with the book is that the first 90 pages are more "psychology of life" and are not directly focused on Poker. He is laying the groundwork for the following, but you can skim this material without much loss. There are then 100 pages associated with defining the player types and how this influences their tells. There are then another 20 pages of general psychology. The most useful part of this book is contained in a 4-page Appendix where he reinstates Caro's tells and how they are influenced by player type. You need the preceding material to fully understand this appendix, so this is more than a four-page book.

Read Caro's book first, or this one will not make very much sense. It is also an interesting adjunct to "The Psychology of Poker". This book is very useful if you have not figured out that Caro's tells can be misleading for some people, i.e., passive players respond passively, even when they are not trying to feign weakness and aggressive players can play aggressively even when they have a good hand. McKenna tries to give some guidance as to how to distinguish "normal" play from an attempt to mislead. His guidance is somewhat general, however, but still useful if it gets one to think "Beyond Tells".

    4 out of 5 stars slow starter...just don't quit too soon.......2005-10-12

I am always looking for new ideas and this title intrigued me. It started very slowly for me and I almost added it to the maybe someday stack. If I had stopped after the first 30 or 40 pages I would probably have given it 1 or 2 stars also, but the chapter on meta tells is some of the freshest thinking on poker to come along in quite a while and very useful in the real world. It goes beyond the basic tells of Mike Caro's book but you need to have read Caro's book to fully appreciate this one. I would also agree that the writing is not as good as one would think given the author's academic background and I did find myself rereading numerous sections because of lack of flow. This is why only 4 stars instead of 5. One other thing, the section on meta tells is really the entire value of the book in my opinion but you need to wade through the earlier portions of the book as they lay the foundation for the meta tells section. This approach to using tells and refining them based on player personality is fascinating and useful. Overall a very insightful and useable book if you can get past the slow start. Don't quit too soon and you will have some excellent new tools to add to your poker toolbox.

2 out of 5 stars Beyond Math Poker.......2005-08-15

A book on poker tells that is a useful companion to Mike Caro's definitive "Book of Tells".

    1 out of 5 stars Beyond readability.......2005-07-17

Wish I could give this book more stars. I wanted to like it - the author's credentials as a psychologist and columnist for "Poker Player" seemed promising - but it's too badly written and too lacking in fresh ideas. It's the same old story, somewhat mangled and dressed up in the author's pet jargon.

For tells, you're still better off with the Caro book, even though it's dated; and for poker psychology, you're much, much better off reading the two 2+2 titles - the Alan Schoonmaker book, "The Psychology of Poker," and the John Feeney book, "Inside the Poker Mind."

            5 out of 5 stars Pleasently surprised!.......2006-07-05

I bought this book because I was satisfied with another book from Silverthorne Publishing, "Super Craps" by Sam Goldsmith.

This book is easy to read (even thought is gets kind of long in some places), I read it in about 4 nights, 1 hour a night, and started working the system on my PS2 and with a four deck shoe at the kitchen table on the 5th day. When we (wife and I) followed the Power Blackjack System at a $200 buy in we consistantly won $100 plus together. I did lose $25 one day but she made $145. When I tried $4000 buy in I won $1000 in 15 minutes.

The book is real good, no card counting, covers other interesting items about casinos, pit bosses, record keeping, great betting rules and helps explain how to safe bet when closing out the session. It's an easy system to pick up even for people just looking to play casually. (There's a section on that too.)

            1 out of 5 stars beware buyer.......2005-08-06

I have bought several publishings from this company. Each publishing is a endless circle of telling you to buy another one of there publishings. They offer a 100% garuntee and dont honor it. If you email them they might respond once and tell you that your refund was submitted to your credit card and it is your credit card companies fault you have not got your refund. Dont be scammed like me and many others. Never purchase any publishings by Martin J. Silverthorne.
