4 out of 5 stars Beyond the wall.......2007-01-23

Very interesting to read first hand what it is like to live with autism. The author's accomplishments are amazing, but also his awareness of his limitations. A good book to learn more about this condition, also easy and enjoyable reading.

4 out of 5 stars Helping to understand the perspective from an Aspie.......2007-01-09

I recently had a young family member diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome and wanted to know more about experiences and views from persons with Asperger Syndrome. I believe Stephen was able to inform the reader of what it is like to exist in a world without having the social skills we non Aspies take for granted. The book lets one know the challenges that might exist in the future for someone diagnosed with Aspergers during an early age.

1 out of 5 stars Hate to burst the bubble...........2006-08-20

I purchased this book to gain a better insight about Aspergers. Instead, it left me with many unanswered questions. The book is the equivalent to a boring, monotonous `Dear Diary' that gets stuck in one era: His college years and his interest in music. (This is understandable as the author is terrified of life outside of college, & music is all he knows.) Yet I craved more details, I wanted to know more about Mr. Shores' childhood, his parents, the stims, and the chaos...DETAILS!

It felt as if the author was trying to prove how intelligent he is, boasting of his accomplishments and how he's almost neurotypical. His failures were blamed on other people out to get him for unknown reasons. Lets say it for what it is: A man who looks kind of disheveled and a bit `odd' (Unabomber) gets a job in a financial institution, he rides his bike in, hangs out in the shadows getting dressed, doesn't socialize - and no one wants him around. It's BECAUSE HE'S WEIRD! Yet the author blames his co-workers.

I'm sorry but the reality is, the author probably can't see and understand that he IS different because he has Aspergers! I mean, most typical people can spot someone that is odd/weird/different a mile away. They avoid them not because they're being hurtful, they just can't relate to that person.

I wished he had focused in much greater detail about his feelings, emotions and behaviors when he was younger-to gain a better understanding of what shaped him into the person he is now. The book was written as if he fast-forwarded through his entire youth and got stuck on `pause' when he got to college. While this is obsessively interesting to him, it was tiring reading page after page of redundant accounts of his college days.

There is no depth to the book, it was shallowly written and there is not enough elaboration to make me understand, (or want to for that part) what makes Stephen Shore the person he is. While this may be due in part to his disorder, it left so much to be desired.

I'm sorry to anyone who takes offense to this review, as this is not my intention. I applaud Mr. Shores accomplishments and the hurtles he's overcome. He must be MUCH more dimensional than the book conveys. I wanted to know more about HIM and not what he's done in his life.

I'd suggest a better read would be one of Temple Grandin's books. I got a true feeling of who she is and an understanding of how she got there and how autism fits in. She goes into details about what she was thinking as a girl, teenager and adult. Her pranks, her temper, the metaphors and their importance..everything.

I bought this book based on reviews, and I felt it necessary to give mine.

5 out of 5 stars Quirky? We are all on the autism spectrum!.......2006-04-19

I have two young children on the autism spectrum. My constant fear and therefore my constant drive is to help them be independent and happy in their lives. Fortunately, both have very mild forms, one PDD and one autism. So, as I watch and learn from their ways of learning, I find that first, I have many quirks, and then can see those quirks in others. It is a fascinating way to look at the differences in how we all learn. In many ways, we are all on the autism spectrum.

This was an easy read, and one that would be of interest to those studying in the field. It is not too full of jargon, and can easily be read by all. This is a field woefully undertaught to teachers seeking certification.

Would like to meet you, Stephen....

5 out of 5 stars What It's Like On "The Inside".......2003-12-18

As the father of a seven year old son who resides at the light end of the Autism Spectrum, I found Stephens book to be one of the very best I have read by someone who resides on The Spectrum themselves. It is also notable as one of the few autobiographical books by a male. Quite simply put, Stephen's forthrightness is wonderfully disarming. And his very unique ability (especially for someone actually on The Spectrum) to relate not only how the world appears to him but also how that reality fits into the one we nuero-typicals live in, shows an oversight I don't encounter in most typical adults. His positive example is nothing short of a godsend. Beyond giving us hope for our sons, daughters and loved ones who reside with Stephen in this very fascinating place, Stephen's book helps to unravel the mysteries we strive to understand every day. And that Stephen has achieved what he has thus far and has dedicated his life to furthering knowledge about and advocating for the individual on The Spectrum is testimony to this wonderful mans character (and to the loving devotion of his mother, his wife and his mentors!). I only hope my son strives to be half the man Stephen Shore has shown himself to be by this book. If you've just had The "Autism Bomb" fall on you - that is to say, just gotten the diagnosis, you owe it to yourself (and your loved one) to pick up this great book and start thinking positively now at the beginning of your journey, about your gifted child.

Book Description

This unique and cutting-edge book takes Lean beyond your four walls to the end-to-end supply chain. The authors discuss how to integrate the total value stream — vertically, horizontally, and laterally and achieve success through empowered people and teams, cultural transformation, and an integration of Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen, and enabling technologies such as ERP, SCM, APS, CRM, PLM, networks, exchangers, and portals. Using the Lean Extended Enterprise Reference Model (LEERM), the authors demonstrate that by deploying the right methodologies and technologies to the right situation you can achieve huge breakthroughs in performance.

This is an excellent book that I have purchased for key leaders in my organization. It does a great job of linking Value Stream Mapping to Lean Concepts.

5 out of 5 stars the lan extended enterprise.......2003-09-20

Being a "real world" lean practitioner and having gone through the many trappings in "going lean," I found T. Burton and S. Boeder's book, "The Lean Extended Enterprise" to be one of the most practical and usefull text on the market. These authors have blended the best of academics, case histories, lean tools, and industrial science to provide a road map to navigate a lean implimentation. I.e., not only on the shop floor, but across the enterprise. This helps preclude the sub-optimiztion syndrome and lack of work organization and syncronization that many of us have experienced while attempting to go "lean."

5 out of 5 stars Great reference for Enterprise application of lean.......2003-09-20

The book provides a great reference model ("Lean Extended Enterprise Reference Model-LEERM") for understanding the strucure and framework for assisting companies, their customers, and suppliers in transitioning to a total value stream conversion to lean. Unfortuately most books on the subject of lean only address the application of specific lean tools (Kanban, SMED, etc.) and do not provide the strucured methodology necessary for aligning the total organization. The Lean Extended Enterprise Model outlined in the book identifies Panels of Value Stream Integration; (1) Strategic Journey Panel, (2) Best Practices and Principles Panel, (3) Implementation Panel,(4) Methodologies, Tools, and Enabling Technologoes Panel. Additionally the book provides a formal performance measurement tool to support the Lean Extended Enterprise Reference Model. The termed used to define this model by the authors is "Lean Extended Enterprise Assessment Process-LEEAP". Seven major evaluation areas are identified in detail; (1) Leadership, (2) Customer and market focus. (3) Uniform improvement infrastructure, (4) Value stream processes, (5) Extended enterprise integration, (6) organizational learning, and (7) Performance measurement. This book is a must read reference for those companies who are serious about implementing Lean throughout the entire Supply Chain.

5 out of 5 stars Lean Extended Enterprise.......2003-09-20

The book does a good job by meeting its objectives. It provides guidence for the executive that's trying to fit everything into the process from strategic planning to execution.

3 out of 5 stars Too broad a brush..........2003-09-15

What I would thought would bring to me some new concept or ideas to continue to move in the Lean Enterprise direction and conversion, is however a "summary" of all the different available tools, with nothing new about them. Unfortunately not written for those of you who have already started to implement Lean approches in Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Product Development, or else. Good for the ones looking at the different options and trying to see what can be the whole picture...

3 out of 5 stars Incorrectly categorized.......2000-05-09

This book could have more appropriately been categorized as a negotiation strategy or conflict management book. Most examples in this book focus on negotiating a settlement between two (and only two) opposing groups when a change is proposed. There is little or no mention made of change management per se. Further, it's theories and suggestions focus very little on questions such as, "how do I get people to accept and support the change that I am proposing," and rather much more on understanding when resistance to your idea is present. Frankly, I know when resistence is present, I'm more interested in what to do with it.

Finally, the book is poorly written, in my opinion. It often wanders from the subject at hand to make obsure references - e.g., Groucho Marx movies and the third century emperor Pyrrhus. These references are distracting, and inappropriate in a book designed for corporate managers who have little time to read as it is.

5 out of 5 stars Recipe is a Masterpiece--Best Book I've Read!.......2000-02-28

This is the "best" book I've read! With "change" the norm, you must know how to lead the change and we don't lead dollars or materials--it is people--as Tom Peters puts it--"people are our only asset". The author does an outstanding job of walking you through how to make change a reality--dealing head on--with people. I remember the authors recipe with the letters "PEP". Changes force an individual into a "protection" mode (which is natural), but you and I must understand that the protection wall is nothing buy "energy" (but it is critical to understand the energy is not positive nor negative--just energy). Next is "paradox"--you and I must continously engage in dialogue to help people understand why the change is necessary--thus continuously engaging the protective energy. The paradox is the more you engage the protective energy the more it becomes "positive"--leading to the individuals support of change. I have used this recipe and it works--people do not wake up in the morning--planning on how to oppose the future--they just want to understand. I read two books a week, and I've shared the contents of this book with many. THE BEST BOOK I'VE READ!

5 out of 5 stars best book on change I know.......1999-07-20

As one who has recently written a book ("Difficult Converstions"), I'm aware that reader reviews sometimes come off as being written by a well-meaing friend or colleague. So I want to be clear that I've never even heard of Rick Maurer. I got his book off Amazon.com, along with about ten other books on corporate change. Mr. Maurer's book is the one I find the most compelling. More than any of the others, this book tries to adjust our relationship to resistance - to see it as natural, to engage with it, to treat resistors with respect, honesty, and to listen with genuine curiosity, thus turning resistors into legitimate partners in the process of change. It's the only book on change that I recommend to my own organizational clients. Congrats, Rick, on a terrific book, and thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful from the moment I picked it up!.......1999-01-07

Many books have been written about change and how to do it. This one is different. It explores how to deal with the natural and inevitable resistance to change. Many organizations have already undertaken massive change efforts, wrenching processes which have left people reeling -- and resistent. Rick's book focuses on how to use the power of resistance to build support for change in organizations. It explores the nature of resistance, how to recognize it, and what to do about it. It is full of practical, immediately useful techniques and tips for ensuring successful and enduring change. Must read!

Book Description

Good pastoral leadership is not a "by the numbers" proposition. It is a matter of heart and soul, of devoting the whole self to the vision God gives for the congregation in which one serves. Yet neither is it purely intuitive; it requires hard, careful thinking about the directions and details of the path down which God calls.

When Adam Hamilton became pastor of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, its membership consisted of himself and his family. Ten years later the church averages between five and six thousand worshipers per weekend. Throughout this remarkable period, Hamilton has learned many serious lessons about both the broad visions and the specific details of pastoral leadership. Bringing a depth of analytical skills often lacking in visionary leaders, in this book he goes beyond simply telling the story of Church of the Resurrection. He shares the questions that he learned to ask about the largely unchurched population to which Church of the Resurrection has reached out. Further, he demonstrates what he learned by listening to the answers to these questions, and how doing so has made possible a number of strategically crucial decisions the church has made.

One of those crucial decisions was to make more traditional forms of worship and praise the center of the congregation's life. The result is that the example of Church of the Resurrection offers pastors and church leaders (especially those in the mainline) the realization that they need not completely change their liturgical and theological identity in order to reach out to the unchurched. Drawing on his own experience, as well as the detailed research he undertook during a sabbatical leave on the characteristics of highly successful congregations, Hamilton offers pastors and other church leaders solid, substantive thinking on steps that congregations can take to become centers of vibrant outreach and mission.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a new standard for the mainline.......2007-05-22

Adam Hamilton refuses to believe that mainline churches are irrelevant. He challenges us to engage our culture with all of our heart, soul and especially our minds.

He says that every church must answer three questions if it wants to reach people for Jesus
1. Why do people need God?
2. Why do people need the church?
3. Why do people need THIS church?

He then goes on to share observations on leadership from his persective as a mainline pastor who started a church with four people meeting in a funeral home and now has 7000 in worship. His observations are helpful for churches of every size. He doesn't tell the reader to replicate Church of the Resurrection's ministry, but to look at what they are doing and see if you get any good ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Leading the Church.......2007-05-17

I had the pleasure of attending the Church of the Resurrection (COR) while living in Kansas City. Reverend Hamilton is an amazing pastor and has done incredible work through his congregation. I was "nominally" religious before attending and deeply religious afterwards. His book describes the fundamentals of what has made him and COR so successful in developing a passion for Christ and his teachings -- Steve

Book Description

Christian radio, Christian television, Christian schools, and Christian activism have created a cushion that protects believers from a world that often ridicules Christian beliefs and values. Is this the life of faith Christ’s followers are called to? Christian leader and musician John Fischer challenges believers to break out of the safety zone and share Christ through acts of love, intelligent conversation, and genuine compassion. Readers will discover how they can...

Fearless Faith offers the encouragement and tools Christians need to step out in faith and point people to the salvation found in the Jesus.

5 out of 5 stars Parched with Thirst and Dying in the "Safe" Christian Subculture.......2007-05-04

Should Christians live and die within the "safe" (easier, more comfortable) parameters of the Christian subculture or should they eventually "go" into the wilderness of the world at large to minister (i.e. serve) and BE a "light"? John Fischer explores this question in detail in his book "Fearless Faith."

John shares numerous interesting stories/problems/issues:

A pastor confesses: "I live in two worlds: as an academic in a secular university and a pastor in the Christian subculture. To do this, I have to lead two different lives. If certain Christians from my church were to follow me around for a day, they would try to get me fired. If they knew I counseled people while we're having a beer, I would lose my job. My lifestyle in one world is an offense in the other. It forces me to live a lie, and I don't want to lie, but I am left no choice. If I lived totally the way [some in] the church wants me to live, I would lose my ministry in the world... Then I get the 'weaker brother' argument. Church members who are offended when they hear I use a clip from an R-rated movie in my teaching tell me that offends them. These people, who may have been Christians all their lives, still want to qualify as the weaker brother. How long do they plan on staying weak, I wonder?"

A woman confesses that the non-Christian women she's met at college "are not 'projects' for me. My impetus for fostering relationships is not to 'save' them. They are seekers like myself... I believe it to be an atrocity to sidle up to others purely out of evangelical fervor. There must be a sincere, heartfelt desire to simply love others rather than to mold them into my idea of what they should be."

A marketing executive points out: "The church used to be the source of the world's greatest art, but now it has turned its back on that. Now the Christian subculture is where you go to find some of the worst art." John reflects on the numerous Christian artists/muscisians (etc.) that are perfectly happy to simply MIMIC their secular counterparts and just label it "Christian" (e.g. X-Sinner and AC/DC). Huh? This is fake, inauthentic and not of the heart, to say the least. (If I want to listen to AC/DC I'm gonna listen to AC/DC, not some copycat "Christian" alternative, if you know what I mean. [Not that I listen to AC/DC; but I confess that I may groove to their riffs if I occasionally hear them on the radio] ).

A man decided to wear an overt Christian t-shirt to "witness" to people. Guess what? The shirt failed to provoke any spiritual conversations; in fact, people tended to avoid him. He later observed that when he wore his Fender t-shirt he successfully struck up conversations with strangers about guitar and music, which occasionally led to discussions about God and Christianity. Obvious conclusion: The Fender t-shirt witnesses better that the (supposedly) witnessing t-shirt.

A missionary in France went to 4000 households and gave the people a card to fill out for a free bible and study guide. Guess how many responses he received? None, zilch, nada. He naturally decided to change his evangelistic approach (like maybe try establishing actual relationships with flesh & blood people).

BOTTOM LINE: The book successfully addresses the problem of Christians being engulfed in a guarded subculture rather than engaging a godless culture. John gives you lots to think about and question.

Worthy of numerous repeat readings. Highly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh Perspective.......2006-03-15

If you're tired of wondering why you keep going to church, bible studies, and Sat. afternoon potlucks and want to live a life outside of "safe" Christianity, this book delivers. I really enjoyed the fresh perspective, from a man of God, that explains why we must be a light. Pushing ourselves into culture and society is what Christ did and He's calling us to do the same.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute "must read" book for all Christians.......2006-01-18

I wholeheartedly agree with the unanimous 5-star rating this book has received from the other reviewers. Fischer's clean, unflinching, to-the-point style lays out the problem clearly and compassionately. Christianity, particularly American Christianty, has carved out a 'safe' niche within the culture at large. The problem, as Fischer points out, is that you cannot create a safe niche within a corrupted, flawed culture without being corrupted yourself. In the end, we're left with a disturbing image of a divided faith where there are two types of Christians...those who build walls to insulate themselves, and those who tear them down in an effort to engage the world and have a positive effect on it. This book will help you discover which category you fall into. It'll either make you cheer, or make you squirm. Either way, it should drive you to take action and open your heart to the incredible promise of love contained within the message of Christ. This small book contains a huge message. Read it and recommend it to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2002-10-06

I would put this in the same category as Roaring Lambs, What's so Amazing about Grace, and The Ragamuffin Gospel. John will make you evaluate how you spend your money, your time and your energies.

5 out of 5 stars Go where no man has gone before!.......2002-07-16

John Fischer addresses with clarity, precision, and brutal honesty the issues which have been niggling at the corners of my own Christian walk for many years. He calls into question and accountability the current "exclusionist, safe, non-threatening Christian subculture" of which the vast majority of Christians partake to an extreme level. Faith on trial for being fearful? You bet...and found, in this writing, GUILTY AS CHARGED!

Hats off to Mr. Fischer for having the gumption to buck the current "Christian establishment"! I have often wondered where Christians get off thinking that just because a song is labeled "Christian" that it makes it any better than a song "outside" the Christian genre.

As one who cringes at "fish" displayed on business cards or scripture on checks, it is good to know I am not only not alone, but that there is a whole Christian Underground out there that believes Christianity is more than "witnessing"....Christians who aren't afraid to live their lives with the idea that living one's life as a Christian has more to do with our relationship with God, integrity, honesty, compassion, caring, and loving and respecting other people ...that is...HOW WE LIVE OUR LIVES...than it does looking down our noses at someone else just because they aren't Christian...

THANK YOU MR. FISCHER!

As always, Elie Wiesel has transformed his personal experiences into a work of fiction that is anything but. In "The Town Beyond the Wall" readers are introduced to Michael, a Jew who has survived the Holocaust and spends the rest of his life searching for meaning and answers to questions that may not even have answers. Wiesel's stories are driven by questions and the memories that haunt his characters.

"The Town Beyond the Wall" is told through flashbacks. Michael, the narrator, is being tortured in jail after finding his way back home inside the Iron Curtain. His torture is the 'prayer', to stand face to a wall until the pain in his legs causes him to speak. But Michael is strong and resists telling on his friend because he wishes to save a life. He no longer cares about God or religion. He is plagued by memories of his childhood and the regrets he has about actions not taken. He desperately wants answers but knows that some of his questions have no answers.

Wiesel is a master storyteller. He creates characters who are vivid and alive, perhaps because they are endowed with who he is. In "The Town Beyond the Wall" he has crafted perhaps his most optimistic tale, ending with a parable that is at once as thought-provoking as it is disturbing. Perhaps Wiesel has Michael sum up the story the best with these words: "...it isn't easy to live always under a question mark. But who says that the essential question has an answer? The essence of man is to be a question, and the essence of the question is to be without an answer."

4 out of 5 stars great ending!.......2000-12-04

When I read this book, the only other works of Elie Wiesel that I read were those from The Night Trilogy. The Town Beyond the Wall is a bit of a departure from those three stories. You see more optimism in this work, though this only becomes obvious towards the end. The language is more poetic and really sucks you into the protagonist's world.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book describing alternative portals to the sacred.......2006-12-04

Usually I run a mile at anything writen by a psychologist or someone in the profession. While I respect what they're doing, and have done a lot of therapy myself, I find their tools and perspectives are usually quite limited and out of date. This however, is an excellent book. Writen from extensive practical experience for the person who's seeking spirituality outside of organised religion... and lets face it, that's a growing market! Even if you do have a primary spiritual path or religious faith, you will find that this book has much to offer in terms of practical connection with the sacred/god/spirit in areas you may not have considered.

I found much of this work has the flavour of Thomas Moore, while still being uniquely the author's own work and perspective. The reader will also note a Jungian influence in his work. Elkins outlines 8 alternative paths to the sacred - The Feminine, The Arts, The Body, Psychology, Mythology, Nature, Relationships, Dark Nights of The Soul. It's great to choose one that appeals to you and delve into it and then to look at section you may not initially be attracted to and see how that can be worked into your life - there are many portals to the sacred! I pick this book up occassionaly just to review a chapter and reflect on how I can integrate that path more into my life. In a final chapter, he provides a valuable tool for developing a spiritual program based on each of the paths including several exercises and a places for reflection. Coaches will find this a valuable tool for their toolkit.

I've recently went through my books to cull out the rubbish and titles I've outgrown, this book will be a keeper. Highly recommended.

This book, which I've read twice through and refer to from time to time, gives the reader a clear explanation of spiritual paths. They are backed up by the author's experience and knowledge of the field. Being a southern boy from a conservative christian group, many of the concepts here are foreign to the heritage in which I was raised. I have attempted at times during the course of my life to understand and fathom this yet evolving alternative spiritual tradition. This book has been a help. The fact that it is authored by a person who comes from where I come from provides validation for me of the truths of this spiritual stream. David and I come from the same place in rural Arkansas. He is six years older than I and I can distinctly remember him on pitcher's mound throwing his roundhouse curveball to Pony league batters. We grew up in an intense, close knit christian group. Zealous and extremely rational, the rules are well set and little deviation allowed. But sincere, diligent, and devout beyond reproach. Therefore, I know where he is coming from. David was always a caring, thoughtful and feeling type person. Naturally, he went into the ministry originally but eventually found his way and home in the psychology profession (lucky for you dear reader). Even though I haven't seen or talked with him since I was a teenager in the sixties I can still hear his voice when I read the book. You can perceive that he made an impression on me. The book shows that he has read widely and he draws from resources back to the Greeks and before as well as spiritual writings up to the present. It is not New Age pap. I really admired him for self-disclosure and for his guts to say some of the things he did in the sections on the feminine and the erotic. The book is intended for those "outside the walls of traditional religion". But, it is my opinion that it is no less useful for those (like myself) who are within organized religion. So read it and try out some of the paths. It is good that he provides suggested structure and discipline. Didn't Jesus say something like "My yoga is easy my burden is light"?

5 out of 5 stars Beyond Religion and Into My Soul.......1999-11-30

This is one of the best books I have ever read. It is like I wrote it myself it is so near to my own philosophy. If you would to explore something outside what you have always been told is the truth, read this book!

5 out of 5 stars This book will open your eyes, as it did mine!.......1999-09-05

As a spiritual teacher I have often been asked about spirituality and religion. David, however, deals with this topic better than anyone I have ever seen--Del Millers, author, Dancing with God

5 out of 5 stars Insightful.......1999-08-25

This book expressed ideas that I have been feeling for a long time. This book was beautiful and spiritually insightful. I do believe in God and our lord and savior Jesus Christ, however traditional religion did not quench my hunger for spiritual knowledge. I strongly advise this book for the spiritual seeker

Book Description

In this wise and lyrical book about landscapes of the desert and the mind, Edward Abbey guides us beyond the wall of the city and asphalt belting of superhighways to special pockets of wilderness that stretch from the interior of Alaska to the dry lands of Mexico.

3 out of 5 stars Better places to start with Abbey.......2005-03-27

In some ways this book reflected a more mature Edward Abbey than was present in Desert Solitaire: A Season in the Wilderness but in many other ways though he just came across as older (not wiser.)

Since this book is a collection of individual pieces and not a unified whole it is to be expected that they will range from one another in both topic and quality - with that in mind I would warn any potential reader that Abbey's best work of the collection is not at the front so don't be overly discouraged by the overly long stream of consciousness `A Walk in the Desert Hills' or the overly self-involved and nostalgic `How It Was.'

Generally speaking, Abbey is at his worst in this book when his eyes are turned inward and conversely he is at his best when his eyes are turned outward over the desert landscapes which he loved in essays like `Desert Images', `The Damnation of a Canyon' and `On the High Edge of Texas.'

If you haven't yet read any books by Abbey before I would highly recommend that you start with Desert Solitaire instead of this one. While Beyond the Wall isn't terrible it does lack some of the charm of Desert Solitaire, the continuity and narrative structure makes it easier for the reader to identify with the work, with Abbey himself and with the desert which he so loved.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Abbey.......2002-06-19

The first two pieces in this collection provide the best introduction to Abbey I can think of. "A Walk in the Desert Hills" describes a 115-mile walk across the Sonoran Desert, in search of adventure, wisdom, and water. "How It Was" describes his first incursions into the Four Corners and Glen Canyon area, before the pavement came. "How It Was" will make you understand what got Abbey intoxicated with the desert. "A Walk ..." tells why it was still more magical than bourbon even thirty years later. For these two pieces alone this is my favorite of Abbey's books. The remainder of the pieces in the book, which describe forays around the Colorado River region, the Sea of Cortez, and a rafting trip in northern Alaska, are pure, delightful gravy.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Simplicity.......2002-05-23

Although Desert Solitaire is Abbey's most popular work of non-fiction and is an undeniable American masterpiece, Beyond the Wall in many ways surpasses it in its praise of the beauty and granduer of nature and as a meditation on humanity's place in it. As a work primarily concerned with Abbey's experiences on several hiking/camping trips alone in the Desert, from Southern Colorado, and West Texas, through theNew Mexico and Arizona wilds to the Sea of Cortez, the reader is allowed an glimpse into his psyche that is unsurpassed in these quiet revelations, documented in many a lonely, but not lonesome walk. In Beyond the Wall, Abbey is closest to his comparison with Thoreau, in the way that the simple description of Nature itself is the focus of this work. In many ways this book is both a eulogy and a celebration of Glen Canyon and raw unspoiled Nature.
Whether narrating "a Walk Through Desert Hills" or a "float trip down the doomed Glen Canyon, Abbey's awareness of the subtle force of nature is everpresent, and is expressed in the metaphoric image of Freedom and Wilderness versus industrial insanity and slavery. In many ways, what is beyond the wall is the possibility of our unmeditated communion with nature. And although this wall seems forminable, it can be overcome simply by venturing off the beaten path into a wilderness unknown to many. His solution lies in the simple concept of reestablishing an intimate relationship with Nature, which is deprived of so many today. Thus, in becoming acquainted with our environments and surroundings we will be much more involved in saving what is there. The case of Glen Canyon is a sad illustration of this, for despite its stunning beauty and granduer, which Abbey claimed surpassed even that of the Grand Canyon, it was destroyed simply because not enough people had experienced it and too few cared enough to save it.
In reading the essays in Beyond the wall, Ed introduces us to one way that we can all get beyond the walls that alienate us from nature and ultimately ourselves. And since this book can only guide us so far, it is we that must take the next step and decide on what side of the wall we want to live our lives.

4 out of 5 stars Why walk in a desert? Why get off the sofa at all?.......2001-06-27

This is a fine collect of 10 early hikes and float trips Abbey made mostly in the high deserts of the American Southwest. The last takes place in Alaska. In "A Walk in the Desert Hills" Abbey tells of a solo hike across more than 100 miles with only his backpack and the hope that water will be found in natural tanks. What, the reader may ask, compels a man to undertake such a trek with only a belief that salvation lies ahead in a bowl shaped stone (tanks) filled with rain water, and then further on, perhaps another, and hopefully another still? Throughout the book he answers this question by showing us the hidden beauty of slot canyons, how the Colorado looked beneath the flooded Glen Canyon before the dam and shares with us his discovery of petroglyphs and pictographs whose meanings still remains unknown. This is Abbey when his desert world was still new, before the roads and bridges and dams he hated changed it all. This is the world beyond the wall, his world. "Beyond the wall of the unreal city, beyond the security fences topped with barbed wire and razor wire, beyond the asphalt belting of superhighways, beyond the cemented banksides of our temporarily stopped and mutilated rivers, beyond the rage of lies that poison the air, there is another world waiting for you. It is the old true world of the deserts, the mountains, the forests, the islands, the shores, the open plains, Go there ...into the ancient blood-thrilling primeval freedom of those vast and democratic vistas. You will never understand the secret essence of the word freedom until you do."

Abbey was as about as free as a man can get.

5 out of 5 stars abbey's finest hike.......1999-11-01

ed abbey's tromp through the american wilderness in search of a definitive ideology and a few tankfuls of water allow the reader to believe in the underdog's points of view......whether you agree with them or not. Awesome book!!!!
