Book Description
Between 1993 and 2000, a series of groundbreaking experiments revealed dramatic evidence of a web of energy that connects everything in our lives and our world—the Divine Matrix. From the healing of our bodies, to the success of our careers, relationships, and the peace between nations, this new evidence demonstrates that we each hold the power to speak directly to the force that links all of creation. What would it mean to discover that the power to create joy, to heal suffering, and bring peace to nations lives inside of you? How differently would you live if you knew how to use this power each day of your life? Join Gregg Braden on this extraordinary journey bridging science, spirituality and miracles through the language of The Divine Matrix.

Such fools these mortals be........2007-10-03
If there was a "Divine Matrix" allowing everyone to wish what they deeply desired into existence do you think a just and sane "Divinity" would let a bunch of somewhat evolved apes loose with such an ability? Thank God I do not have such power because I know in all honesty that I am not evolved enough and wise enough to use it well. But those who want something for nothing, those who are still infants at heart wishing their mere wish and every need to magically be granted by Parent in the Sky or latest pseudo-scientific mumbo-jumbo hash of how reality is will flock to buy this latest mystical puff-piece. When it doesn't work for them they will blame themselves or look for the next similar work that claims they can have everything without any real effort beyond believing and tuning themselves. Yes, inner attitude makes tremendous difference. But it must be matched with well planned action and lots of it to accomplish anything in this world.
You Have the Power!.......2007-10-02
"The Divine Matrix" by Gregg Bradden reveals insights into scientifically verifiable universal energy that connects and affects all aspects of our lives.
The central message in this book is that each person has the power to speak to this universal energy/force and thereby create a more peaceful and joyful life for oneself and ultimately transform the planet.
An inspirational read, especially with the central message that our true power for life transformation comes from within!

Does Verify Quantum Science.......2007-09-03
"The Divine Matrix: Bridging Time, Space, Miracles and Belief" by Gregg Braden, is firstly about discovering the Divine Matrix and revealing the mystery that connects all life. Secondly, the book goes on to describe how the Divine Matrix works, and brings insight into bridging between imagination and reality. Finally The Divine Matrix explains how to successfully work with healing in Quantum Awareness, which includes insight and messages from the Divine Matrix.
Also, the Divine Matrix is scientifically verifiable in terms of the latest findings in Quantum Science...and interestingly the hologram is a perfect analogy to ideas presented in this book.
Most highly recommended.
If you like Divine Matrix then you'll be fascinated with a recent New Age novel I've discovered that is also about connectedness, spirituality, and life transformation:

Best "Consciousness Research" book I've Read to Date.......2007-08-05
I've read many, many books of a spiritual nature over the last several years and, over & over again I would read that we are all connected somehow and that we impact, or co-create, our reality. But, until reading Braden's "The Divine Matrix", I didn't really understand these ideas.
This book is so powerful because Braden doesn't just tell readers how to "intend" a different future, or make the statement that we are all connected, but instead he explains how & why these statements are true based on new scientific evidence. Plus, although the scientific concepts he discusses are quite complex, he has the ability to make them easy to understand for people who, like me, have no physics background.
The overall concept is that there is a web of energy where all things begin and all possibilities exist. It's this "web" that connects us to everyone and everything, and through which we bring possibilities into existence (co-creating our reality through imagination, prayer, judgement, expectation, etc...). What a brilliant design!
An awesome "bonus" is the "20 Keys to Consciousness" he includes at the end, where he outlines how to use the information he provides to create the life you want to live. You may want to type these up, print them out, and hang them somewhere that you'll see them everyday...
In addition to the scientific concepts and research discussed in "The Divine Matrix", Braden also shares some personal stories reflecting his journey of discovering, understanding, and using this information - providing a really nice balance between the science & the personal.
Overall, I would HIGHLY reccomend "The Divine Matrix" to anyone interested in how science is beginning to prove the truth of ancient spiritual concepts, as well as those who'd like to co-create a better future. It's insightful, profound, and an "easy read" (when compared to other books of this genre).

Thank you Gregg for helping wake people to the matrix of energy we all share.
There is no escaping that "all is one". Anyone interested in books that search quantum physics/science for an explanation of the Divine, Spirit, unifying energy of One will enjoy this book. Caryn Colgan, Ancient Pact
Book Description
This book takes a fresh, student-oriented approach to teaching the material covered in the senior- and first-year graduate-level matrix structural analysis course taken by civil engineering majors. Unlike traditional texts for this course that are difficult to read, Kassimali takes special care to provide understandable and exceptionally clear explanations of concepts, step-by-step procedures for analysis, flowcharts, and interesting and modern examples, producing a technically and mathematically accurate presentation of the subject.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2003-10-24
2D and 3D matriz analysis of skeletal structures well described. It is a must for graduate, undergraduate and professional Civil Engineers. I strongly recommend this book for those who are interested in computer applications in strucutral analysis.
No much to say. Just Amazing!.......2003-09-23
You just need to read it! The way Mr. Kassimali explains the background of the structural analysis using the stiffness matrix method supplied with many examples and flowcharts is simply the best. This book really teaches. A must for structural engineer!
"Hands on" Matrix Analysis of Structures.......2002-06-22
This book is a must for a structural engineer who wants to have a better understanding of how computers are used to perform structural analysis. The author explains precisely how computers are used to analyze 2D and 3D trusses, beams, frames, and grids in a language a working engineer can understand. This book has the reader participate in the process of understanding matrix analysis of structures by supplying flowcharts and examples that are accurate and easy to understand.
Also, the author discusses the flexibility and stiffness methods as well as finite-element formulation using virtual work to explain matrix structural analysis. And what I like about this book the most is the fact that the author explains in a step-by-step manner precisely how to write and test a working matrix structural analysis program in any computer programming language.
Solution of 2D and 3D Structures.......2000-11-25
This book solves 2D and 3D structures using Stiffness Method. For the 2D structures, it starts off with trusses, then beams and frames. Next, for the 3D structures, space trusses, space beams i.e. grids and space frames are introduced. Special cases such as pin-jointed members or member releases, temperature and fabrication error effects and support displacements were considered in this book. Usually, a structural stiffness matrix's size is Z x Z where Z is 2 times the number of joints for 2D structures. However, in this book, Kassimali's structural stiffness matrix size is DOF x DOF where DOF is the number of directions a joint can freely move. Thus this reduces computer memory storage. This book also comes with a CD-ROM with 6 programs for solving 2D and 3D trusses, beams and frames. Highly recommended for Structural Engineers wanting to write their own Structural Analysis software using Stiffness Method as good flowcharts are presented in this book. There is only 7 pages on Flexibility method. Special topics and modelling techniques are introduced such as nonprismatic members, semirigid connections, inclined roller supports etc. are presented in this book.
ORDERLINESS IN CHAOS-THE MATRIX.......2000-09-27
This book is very good for the fact that it focusses on the methods of analysis of structures using the matrix methods. It is shown nicely how matrix methods using the stiffness and flexibility methods simplify the methods of analysis of structures. One unique quality of this book is that the flowcharts used are easily understandable and hence it becomes easy for a student to actually do programming and get the results of analysis in a very quick time.Putting everything in matrix form makes students realise some orderliness in chaos and that greatly helps, in understanding the concepts and i would say that this book was totally successful in doing this job.
Book Description
In 1997, Dr. Richard Bartlett experienced an event that would redirect the entire course of his life.
He suddenly discovered that by lightly touching his clients while at the same time applying focused intent, he could restore them to a physically, mentally, and spiritually balanced state, instantly shifting misalignments that had plagued them for years. Most astonishing of all, he could teach anyone how to do this. Now, for millions of people looking for empowerment in an age of declining and impersonal healthcare, Dr. Bartlett shares this phenomenon in a book full of explosive potential.
In Matrix Energetics, Dr. Bartlett builds upon his popular seminars to teach us how to access the discovery he has made -- a process that merges the science of subtle energy with our innate imaginations to produce measurable results. By applying forces known to modern physics, each of us can tap into states of healthy awareness from different moments -- in essence, travel in time -- and bring them into the present for immediate, profound results. As Dr. Bartlett clearly shows, this practice requires no special training, produces transformation in the blink of an eye, and is available to everyone who has a willingness to learn.
Matrix Energetics, The Science and Art of Transformation, provides an easily-reproducible, results-oriented process of change that draws on the fundamental principles embraced by the field of quantum physics. This paradigm-busting book can teach anyone how to access their creative power to heal and transform their lives. Dr. Richard Bartlett discovered that what he once thought about the human body was just the tip of the iceberg -- after seeing change beneath his hands, and hearing about the invisible transformations that were often revealed later -- he knew that he had to pass along what he had discovered.

Another skeptic is converted..........2007-09-27
Lightning bolts shot down my arms and came out of my fingertips. My head expanded as each hair felt like it had taken on a life of its own, searching for its own universe. My spine forgot its reason was to support my body and started bending one way, then the other, like an abandoned "bendy" toy. Twenty years of stress and anguish somehow found an exit through my brain, which was struggling to comprehend what was happening. Finally my legs buckled under me and my body collapsed into the welcoming arms of a Matrix intern, who had seen this exhibition many times before and fortunately was more prepared than I was for what was to be a life-altering experience.
As he gently lay me on the floor, laughing hysterically and more relaxed than I had felt in many years, I knew that the hands of Dr. Barlett had created something mystical .......
I had heard Dr. Bartlett on the radio, and was interested enough to go to his website, and then order the book - I was somewhat skeptical about the whole thing and felt that I wanted to attend a seminar so that I could see for myself. I must admit, that I was a little uneasy enrolling for the seminar, as it made me feel that the book was just enticing you to attend the seminar.
On the first day of the seminar, I told Dr. Bartlett (who is extremely "approachable" and available to anyone who wants to speak to him personally) I needed to feel his hands on me, as I needed "proof" that "something" was actually going on. The above description is what happened to me.
I still don't know what hit me - but I told Dr. Bartlett at the time that I felt like you had instantly taken 25 years off my life. When I returned to my seat, my new friends asked what had happened as my face had "softened" - and continued to do so over the next two days. More interestingly, my 22 year old daughter thought I had "face work" done while I was in Seattle - and relatives in England thought I had been at the Botox (something I've never done). The only problem is that it only happened on one side of my face - I now have no choice but to come to another seminar in the hopes that you can "fix" the other side of my face.
I realize this is supposed to be a book review, but I felt compelled to relay the above incident as it actually happened - I am not a doctor, or a healer of any type, and have no connection to Dr. Bartlett. But I did read the book from cover to cover, several times. I found it easy to understand and had no problem duplicating the technique with what I felt were minor successes, but could have perhaps been wishful thinking. I am only giving it four stars as I think there could have been more instructional photos. However, having read the book and having now been to all three levels of the seminar, I DO understand that, crazy as it seems, there really IS NOTHING TO LEARN!! Once you get that, you get the whole concept - and Dr. B. would be the first one to say that he has made it all up!! Name me an evangelist who would DARE to say that.
I am anxiously awaiting the next book, which I understand is in the works...and I will go to more seminars. As others, many of them M.D.s have said - there is definitely something to this, whether or not we understand what it is. All you disbelievers should suspend your disbelief for just long enough to give it a try - I did - and look what happened to me!
NOT total bunk: This skeptic got it to work!.......2007-08-23
I would not be writing this review, but I decided to after reading the previous post that this book is "Total Bunk." Being a doctor and also interested in quantum physics, I was intrigued with the idea of combining the two. I read the book with a somewhat skeptical mindset, but tried to keep open-minded enough to see if there was "something" I could get from it. I agree with some other posters that the book is somewhat of a hodgepodge and not really good at explaining the techniques. For writing, I would give it only three stars. I also thought some of the claims made either by the author or by some of the seminar attendees (as outlined in the book) were a bit pie-in-the-sky. I went to the website and noticed an upcoming seminar close to me and decided to see for myself what it was about.
Well, Dr. Bartlett got on stage and brought up people from the audience. One after another, people were falling over backwards after he touched them. It looked similar to the b.s. you see the supposed televangelical "healers" do. One man stood in an uncomfortable extreme extension posture on stage for about twenty minutes while Dr. Bartlett continued teaching and working on other people on stage. I thought I was probably witnessing some kind of hypnotic suggestions.
The next day of the seminar, Dr. Bartlett began teaching us how to do what he does. The woman sitting next to me was another doctor who had stopped her medical practice many years prior due to multiple cervical (neck) and lumbar (low back) spinal fusions from previous injuries. She had almost no strength in her right arm due to nerve damage from the neck surgery and constant pain and spasms in her left arm and shoulder from compensating for the weakness on the right. We looked at each other, both skeptical that anything like Dr. Bartlett was saying could be true, let alone us be able to do it after a brief intro.
On my first "application" of the first technique on her, there was some reduction in the spasms in the left arm with a total reduction of the pain. I decided to move on to the left arm to something I could measure more "objectively." I first tested her forearm flexor muscles and found almost no strength, then applied Dr. Bartlett's technique and retested. To our astonishment, she instantly regained about 50% of her strength. I applied the technique on that same side once again and retested. She had a full level 5 (normal) strength rating. I then moved on to the time travel technique. The doctor fell back into her seat when I got to the age that her neck injury occurred. I then two-pointed, with focused intent, to her neck, and "got out of the way." She instantly looked several years younger (we later joked about using this for anti-aging) and I told her to move her neck. Her ranges of motion were almost normal. Still being somewhat skeptical that I could have had anything to do with something like this, I spoke to her the next day to ask her if her improvements lasted, which they had. She had spend a part of the night reassessing her beliefs and I could see she was experiencing a total life change. Dr. Bartlett ended up bringing her up onto the stage on the last day of the seminar and worked on the rest of the range of motion in her neck and then her lumbar spine, having no idea that her entire lumbar spine had been fused. She bent down and touched the floor with her fingers. The stressed, skeptical face I saw in her on day one turned into one of extreme joy with a very wide smile and she was blinking back tears.
The other people I worked on were not as dramatic and I didn't have as dramatic effects occur on myself (but didn't have anything in particular that needed "healing"), but after I used the "time travel" technique on another person, I was able to give her a rundown of her life experiences from age to age that she said was "very accurate." As I did the technique on her, I "felt" things at certain ages and wasn't certain what I was feeling. AFter it was over, I gave her a quick overview of her life, not knowing what I was going to say until a split second before I actually said it. In other words, I ended up giving her a psychic reading of her past, but had no idea what her past was until I began to verbalize it!
Once I got home from the seminar, I applied the techniques to my partner (another doctor), who has a long history of injuries, including one that lead to back surgery, and terrible, contorted posture. To our surprise, he leaned forward and his very contracted calves began to elongate, then he went into a strange dance standing in place that we could see was correcting his lower legs and pelvic region. The injuries that lead to the calf contractures occurred when he was a teenager. It was the first time in decades that he felt them lengthen and relax. The next day, the focus was on another aspect of his posture. He went into another standing dance that was different than the day before and was more flowing--kind of like tai chi. It was apparent that he was moving in directions he was not able to voluntarily do on his own. This lasted about 25 minutes until he was becoming fatigued and decided to stop it, but during that time, the dance changed and I could see the focus on another aspect of his faulty postural patterns as though his nervous system was being retrained. By the way, he did not attend the seminar because he was totally skeptical and was surprised when his body began to spontaneously move when I first touched him. We have more work to do, but he reports that he is able to walk more comfortably and his chronic postural pain has reduced.
Dr. Bartlett himself does not claim to "know" exactly what he's doing. In fact, his emphasis is on shutting down the logical left side of the brain in favor of the subconscious and creative right side. It's basically having a focused intent for the person you're "working" on, then throwing it out to "the universe", "God", "higher power", "higher self", your "guides", "angels", "collective unconscious", or whatever you're comfortable calling it, to do the work from there. I certainly cannot claim, with all my training, to know exactly what I "did", except to use my consciousness to collapse the probability wave in spacetime to set "something" into motion.
And so, this bunk-seeker will be signing up for the next level seminar and will probably end up getting certified under Dr. Bartlett. This appears to hold much more promise than the $80,000 in student loans that I took out to pay for my medical training many years ago. This, I do believe now, is the medicine of the future or at the very least--a new branch. Dr. Bartlett is on to "something" and it's apparent that this is only just the beginning.
Total bunk.......2007-08-22
Here we go again. Another bogus product that exploits popular misconceptions about quantum mechanics and energy, as well as perennial snake oil stand-by's such as confirmation bias and the placebo effect, to sell people a bill of goods. Do yourself a favor -- just eat right, keep physically active, and stay involved in your community. That will do more for your health than any of the nonsense in this sorry excuse for a book.
"Disappointing book".......2007-08-20
What a disappointing use of $15! Have you ever been excited to read all the info on a website, then buy the book, hoping to learn more? Yet, the material on the website seems to do a better job of explaining some things. The book seemed to have been haphazardly put together.
If I could have read just two pages on how to do the basic two-point and gotten it, I would have been more than satisfied; however, I'm almost more confused about how to do it after reading the entire book, than before. There's so much that's left out, too--this really just seemed to be a very extended introductory pamphlet.
Such an awesome way to heal, such a disappointing book.
If You Already Live in the World of Possibilities, Read On.......2007-07-22
This book is wonderful. It's interesting intellectually, but more important, Richard has compacted a lot of the information many of us have or that we've suspected, about the way things work energetically in us and around us, and he has come up with a way of using all this energy simply and easily to affect significant physical change. When I say simple, I mean it.
When compared with ReiKi or any of the other energywork modalities, this method is like falling off a log. If you can use your fingers to point, you're there.
I've been involved with alternative therapies for the last 30 + years, so I've seen a lot of things come and go, some great, some not so. I feel very strongly that this method of Richard's is the most important form of energywork to come along yet.
I have already used it on myself with positive results, and almost instantly, which is the amazing part. No more of that, time heals all wounds stuff. Time, which is also on a continuum, responds very powerfully to this healing method.
To say, I'm blown away is an understatement, and if you are someone looking for a way to get to a better space here on Earth, physically or emotionally, please read this book. You may be required to suspend some limiting beliefs along the way, but trust me, you'll be better off without them.
I guess it goes without saying that I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
An exciting new edition of a classic text
Howard Georgi is the co-inventor (with Sheldon Glashow) of the SU(5) theory. This extensively revised and updated edition of his classic text makes the theory of Lie groups accessible to graduate students, while offering a perspective on the way in which knowledge of such groups can provide an insight into the development of unified theories of strong, weak, and electromagnetic interactions.

classical.......2005-08-05
very well written text about the algebra of standard model,
but not for beginers,a very solid background in particle physics
and symmetry methods for physics is required
A good *first* start.......2003-08-14
This book is good for what it is, namely, something to get your feet wet. When learning the basics of particle physics, e.g. as an undergrad or a beginning experimentalist, this is the quickest way to get a feel for the standard model gauge group.
However, this is *not* a complete text on group theory in particle physics (and therefore, little of what you need for supersymmetric field theories and string theories). So in addition to this book, you'd need something else with an introduction to the other things you need for your particular interest. Try Gilmore's "Applications of Lie algebras...", which I believe is out of print (in libraries). Also, Cornwell's abridged "Group theory in physics" is good (though if you can find the older set of three volumes, that may be more suited to your desires).
I don't suggest many of the other books on group theory for particles/fields/strings. There are tidbits of group theory you can pick up in the particular text you are working with, e.g. "Quantum theory of Fields" by Weinberg if you are learning quantum field theory.
For mathematical physics in general, I strongly suggest "Gauge fields, knots, and gravity" (John Baez), "Differential Geometry for physicists" (Chris Isham), and "Mathematical Physics" (Geroch).
What do you need more?.......2003-02-11
I'd say that, at least, the Georgi's book is too underestimated here.
I agree that this book lacks some notions and concepts which are usually dealt with in the matmatical literature, but not on logical clearity. Every book has its own way. For example the later parts of Green, Schwarz and Witten are also a mere sketches but it sufficiently pinpoints every important steps. A physically inclined reader(?), soon realize that it is filled with (and you may feel the leakage of) the master's intuition. You can see what mathematics going on beneath the physics. It is a well-framed series of informal lectures which reveals some space-between-lines secret.
good supplement.......2002-03-09
good supplement of introductory quantum field theory. particle physics books often have aggressiveness but this is in a relaxed mood, apt for reading in fine sunday mornings. 27 chapters in 300 pages, short chapters, without one for manifold and topology. from this book you can't get a mathematically deep understanding of Lie algebra nor exotic viewpoint for particle/string, but that's not this is for. i hope someday this will be included in Dover classics.

Mediocre.......2001-09-01
Georgi's book has its strengths and weaknesses. It is very strong on application to physics but suffers greatly from a lack of mathematical substance. It has all the earmarks of a mathematics book written by a physicist: lots of physical insight but poor logical structure. Clear definitions and statements of theorems are missing and contribute to the nebulous feel of the text.
This is the kind of book that a casual reader will go through and think he has learned alot but for which the serious student who seeks a precise, thorough understanding of the material will likely end up confused at many points. It is a book of tools. The reader will not obtain a mastery of the subject but must suppliment this book with other, more theoretical treatments of representation theory.
The lack of mathematical rigor is by design as Geogi mentions in the preface. It could have been a better book, in my opinion, had it been more fleshed out in that respect.

Book Description
The best-selling, best known text in Mathematical Economics course, Chiang teaches the basic mathematical methods indispensable for understanding current economic literature. the book's patient explanations are written in an informal, non-intimidating style. To underscore the relevance of mathematics to economics, the author allows the economist's analytical needs to motivate the study of related mathematical techniques; he then illustrates these techniques with appropriate economics models. Graphic illustrations often visually reinforce algebraic results. Many exercise problems serve as drills and help bolster student confidence. These major types of economic analysis are covered: statics, comparative statics, optimization problems, dynamics, and mathematical programming. These mathematical methods are introduced: matrix algebra, differential and integral calculus, differential equations, difference equations, and convex sets.

Great introduction to mathematical economics!.......2007-07-18
I enjoy Chiang's writing style. I've been reading up on mathematical methods in preparation for a masters econ program, and feel very comfortable with the material thanks to this textbook. The international edition is a good bargain.
A must read text book for any economics undergrad student.......2006-04-02
I found it extremely easy to read and at the same time rigorous enough to settle the bases. The author knows very deeply the economics students needs of mathematical methods and achieves a precise and complete explanation of all notions I needed to know for my undergrad course. I strongly recommend it during the first or second year.
A must read for graduate students in economics.......2006-02-26
Alpha Chiang's text should serve as the foundation for all quantitive analysis done in economic theory. It is an invaluable teaching tool for graduate students in economics and will help them better understand the mathematical techniques that have become so necessary for economic modeling.
I am not a highly quantitative person myself, but I found Chiang's book comprehensible and a useful reference guide in my gradaute economics classes. Along with Hal Varian's "Microeconomic Theory" and Jan Kmenta's "Econometrics", I would say that Chiang's "Fundamentals of Mathematical Economics" should serve as sacred literature for any prospective graduate student in economics.
not so good.......2005-10-14
the text carries to excess the concept of "keeping the presentation as simple as possible". but in general you cannot understand or solve problems with a fifth grader's ability to abstract them.
especially the relunctance to use matrix notation makes some topics actually harder to understand once they become more complicated.
furthermore I find the structure quite confusing since the text amounts to a monotous blabla - clear definitions might be helpful and some rigor would keep the reader conscious instead of drifting off. after all the text is not so bad but I think we deserve something better. blume might be better.
The best math textbook for economist.......2005-09-30
That is why it used everywhere, in nearly all economic departments. I strongly recommend you buy this book. It really helped me in my undergrad, and it is helping in my graduate courses. If you want to buy another book to accompany this, get Simon and Blume book. One person (probably little masochistic) was saying that Chiang has so many examples, blah, blah, blah. Look, not everyone is a math genius, undergraduate student's need Chiang, it's even useful for graduates. Math is used quite too excessively in economics...showing off?

Matrix Analysis and Applied Linear Algebra Book and Solutions Manual
ASIN: 0521386322 |
Book Description
Linear algebra and matrix theory have long been fundamental tools in mathematical disciplines as well as fertile fields for research. In this book the authors present classical and recent results of matrix analysis that have proved to be important to applied mathematics. Facts about matrices, beyond those found in an elementary linear algebra course, are needed to understand virtually any area of mathematical science, but the necessary material has appeared only sporadically in the literature and in university curricula. As interest in applied mathematics has grown, the need for a text and reference offering a broad selection of topics in matrix theory has become apparent, and this book meets that need. This volume reflects two concurrent views of matrix analysis. First, it encompasses topics in linear algebra that have arisen out of the needs of mathematical analysis. Second, it is an approach to real and complex linear algebraic problems that does not hesitate to use notions from analysis. Both views are reflected in its choice and treatment of topics.

worth the buy!.......2007-06-30
THis book covers some key aspects in matrix analysis.
Would certainly recommend this book.
very useful for computations.......2007-01-13
I agree with other commentators who remarked that the book is better suited for someone already versed in linear algebra. For the student new to all this, the text can be, shall we say, too formidable?
A good usage is when you have studied the subject, perhaps several years ago, and need a concise refresher.
The strong aspect of the book is the emphasis on numerical calculations. Rather than about proving theorems. Don't worry that it was printed in 1990! While computers have heavily improved, thanks to Moore's Law, the maths of course has not. All the algorithms explained here are still germane to number crunching of linear systems. As another take, look at the Amazon page for the book, for the section about other books that cite this one. Notice the preponderance of computational books.
Not for the uninitiated.......2000-09-06
I bought this book hoping to learn about matrix analyis. I did not. This book is simply a reference manual with plenty of theorems, axioms etc. with little explanation. They give it to you rough and row. NOT A SINGLE SOLVED EXAMPLE, and not even solutions for the exercises given in the book are provided. If you intend to learn about matrix analysis, as I did, let not the 5 stars review mislead you. Don't make the same mistake, this book is not for you.
An encyclopedic reference for matrix analysis and linear alg.......2000-08-28
Horn and Johnson's MATRIX ANALYSIS is simply a masterpiece. You can find each and every result in matrix analysis along with it's proof in this book. Look at their companion volume "Topics in Matrix Analysis" too. Some of these results cannot be found elsewhere.
Excellent book.... for the initiated.......2000-07-09
Horn and Johnson has written an excellent reference book on somewhat-advanced linear algebra (from the point of view of an engineer). There's a lot of treasures in this book, but this book is NOT for beginning linear algebra. Rather, it is written as a handy reference to review and learn certain topics in linear algebra.
Nonetheless, I really like their take on linear algebra. They motivate you in every subject and problem (for example, the relations between eigenvectors, eigenvalues, and optimization problems). These insights are invaluable and definitely worth the admission price.
Together with Golub and Van Loan's "Matrix Computations", this is THE linear algebra book to get, although only if you're sufficiently initiated.
Book Description
Revised and updated, the third edition of Golub and Van Loan's classic text in computer science provides essential information about the mathematical background and algorithmic skills required for the production of numerical software. This new edition includes thoroughly revised chapters on matrix multiplication problems and parallel matrix computations, expanded treatment of CS decomposition, an updated overview of floating point arithmetic, a more accurate rendition of the modified Gram-Schmidt process, and new material devoted to GMRES, QMR, and other methods designed to handle the sparse unsymmetric linear system problem.
Customer Reviews:
Matrix Computations is an excellent guide to understanding and implementing Numerical Linear Algebra.......2007-09-30
This book is an excellent book for the student or researcher who needs to understand clearly the issues that arise in the developement of algorithms for the solution and analysis of linear systems. It gives a great explanation of how one operation like solving a linear system or doing just forward or backward solves can be mapped to basic BLAS primitives and how these variations have been implemented in popular libraries such as Lapack or BLAS and the archetectual reasons why one approach may be more optimized than another, row versus column operations, for example.
For the student it provides a nice walk through on the develpment of these algorithms and for the researcher provides a life long resource for reference to the many algorithms that are laid out here.
This book is clear and easy to follow and it is recomended for anyone who is serious about learning how to design and implement efficient linear algebra algorithms for a variety of archetectual and coding language environments.
bible.......2007-09-24
This book is a bible in matrix computation. While they have a lot of details on everything, though, the notations are rather complicated and hard-to-follow.
Gargantuan Copy and Paste Monument.......2007-05-07
Three stars are for:
(1) Relatively cheap price.
(2) Comprehensive but shallow coverage.
(3) Mass availability.
Hypothesis: The only three prematurely worn keys in Golub & Van Loan's keyboards must be: Control, C and V, since these form the shortcut for copy and paste operations.
There is no depth in this book when compared to classic matrix theory books, although I understand that this may distract from the possible use of the book as a reference manual. But as written, it is of little value in addition to Numerical Recipes; the latter has at least decent text this one does not have character, too much copying and pasting eliminated the book to form a skeleton.
What are the basis books for comparison?
1. Wilkinson, Algebraic Eigenvalue Problem. Super but expensive (>$100).
2. Marcus & Minc, A survey of Matrix Theory and Matrix Inequalities. Super but inexpensive (10$).
3. Horn and Johnson, Matrix Analysis, comprehensive, pretty good, and similarly priced to this ($30).
I am not suggesting that the content should mirror these books but the quality and depth should but despite being in its third edition, the book is full of errors both in pseudo-code and text.
The CTRL-C/CTRL-V effort is so insane that authors' could not help themselves to copy Wilkinson's theorem presentation sequence about the symmetric eigenvalue problem, but Wilkinson's commentary from his book (see Hoffman-Wielandt theorem in Golub & VanLoan second edition).
Whenever someone tells me that they learned something from Golub and Van Loan, I can not help myself to question what they thought they might have learned.
In almost all cases, Golub and Van Loan fans appear to know of a result through memorization without any clue about how it is derived and why it is important. So if this is your bible, then probably you do not deserve a job that requires critical thinking.
The books popularity tells something about the state of the academia: for example, the hotshots of signal processing republished Golub and Van Loan a few times to get their IEEE Fellow titles. Google for 'Multistage Wiener Filter', 'Relationship Conjugate Gradient MSWNF', 'Procrustes Rotations ESPRIT'. Definitely a field that does not appreciate critical thinking but fast copy and paste effort through graduate student slavery.
Exactly what I needed.......2007-03-08
I have been using "canned" programs for matrix calculations, but I needed to learn how they actaully work. This book provided exactly the information that I needed. This book is not for beginners--it requires a pretty good knowledge of linear algebra, but if you have that, this book will be most helpful in understanding sophisticated computational methods
The bible of numerical linear algebra.......2007-01-01
This book is the standard reference for all numerical linear algebra. It is a graduate-level applied math textbook written by practicing professionals for practicing professionals. If you are new to the topic you would probably prefer something like James Demmel's Applied Numerical Linear Algebra.
If you are interested in implementing the algorithms in this book, stop right now and first make sure that you can't use MATLAB or LAPACK instead, or even ScaLAPACK if you need a parallel implementation. Getting these algorithms right is hard, and the hard work has probably already been done by somebody else. LAPACK contains the accumulated wisdom of over forty years of research in numerical linear algebra, and MATLAB contains LAPACK. Don't re-invent the wheel.
On the other hand, if you want to understand how LAPACK works, or if you need to understand its numerical accuracy and stability, then this is the book for you.
Another reviewer has mentioned that this book contains numerous errata in the formulas. This is still true as of the third edition. Usually it is possible to detect and correct these errors by reading and understanding the surrounding text, but beware.
Book Description
This book avoids the traditional definition-theorem-proof format; instead a fresh approach introduces a variety of problems and examples all in a clear and informal style. The in-depth focus on applications separates this book from others, and helps students to see how linear algebra can be applied to real-life situations. Some of the more contemporary topics of applied linear algebra are included here which are not normally found in undergraduate textbooks. Theoretical developments are always accompanied with detailed examples, and each section ends with a number of exercises from which students can gain further insight. Moreover, the inclusion of historical information provides personal insights into the mathematicians who developed this subject. The textbook contains numerous examples and exercises, historical notes, and comments on numerical performance and the possible pitfalls of algorithms. Solutions to all of the exercises are provided, as well as a CD-ROM containing a searchable copy of the textbook.

Progresses Well - Used for Self Study.......2007-07-18
I self studied this book to improve my applied math skills. The book progresses well, with examples clear and easy to follow, even for a non mathematician such as myself. My background is only through the Calculus level. The book begins with linear equations then moves to matrix algebra, a logical approach. The author balances nicely what he refers to as "scaffolding" and the inherent efficiency of the topic.
With the exercises, I focused on the steps required to reach an accurate result and how I may apply this to the business I'm in and used Mathematica for many of the interim computations. This approach worked well for me and allowed me to better understand the topic as a whole, though it's doubtful I could have gotten away with this approach had I been in a formal classroom.
Matrix Analysis and Applied Linear Algebra.......2006-11-11
The book is ok. But It has A lot oF math proof and Word problems
A Model of Authorship.......2006-11-10
This book contains a comprehensive treatment on the topic of matrix analysis and applied linear algebra. The concepts are clearly introduced and developed. It is rich with detailed proofs that are easy to follow. Results are summarized and clearly grouped and marked for reference. As a researcher and a practitioner, I found this book quite useful in explaining mathematical concepts without the need for a classroom instructor.
Besides, this book comes with a CD that contains a PDF version which makes it quite useful to port as a reference. It is very rich with problem sets that add insight, both theoretically and practically. It is accompanied by a solutions manual which strengthens comprehension.
I highly recommend this book. I think it deserves to be a model to follow for authorship in the digital age.
Beautiful Scaffolding.......2006-08-09
Linear algebra is the Babel language of sciences, this book helps you to get proficient in speaking it. Clear-cut presentation, mathematical rigor and historical gossip is in such an unison, that you'll crave for a sequel. This is the 18-th 5-star rating, you shouldn't hesitate any more!
One of the best introductory (modern) books I know........2006-04-27
If you need to learn Linear Algebra and Matrix Theory, your best starting point is this book.
Very well written, many examples, and many "modern" results, that are not found in classics as Gantmacher (also an excellent book).
Buy it and see for yourself.
Book Description
The Publisher claims that we are born into a world controlled by unseen forces that have plagued and manipulated humanity for thousands of years. No, this is no script from a Hollywood movie. It is claimed to be happening to you NOW. You may look around and think that what you see is real. But in truth you are living in an illusion - an illusion designed to keep you in a mental, emotional, spiritual prison cell.
David Icke exposes these forces and their methods of human control and he claims to reveal a fantastic web of global manipulation, orchestrated by forces byond this physical realm. He exposes the hidden bloodlines, through which other-dimensional entities live and operate unseen among us; and he claims to show how the bloodlines of the royal, political, and economic rulers of today are the same as those who ruled as the kings and queens of ancient times.

Children of the Matrix.......2007-05-13
Extremely informative, as are all David Icke's Books. Holds your attention. Encourages you to pay closer attention as to what is going on all around you.
5 for the courage alone. Bravo Icke........2006-06-15
Some people prefer to look at Icke's claims as strickly metaphors (who wouldn't agree that the World's elite are reptilian snakes, evil, and shape-shifters based on their actions?) which is dead on and endlessly relevant - especially these days. And don't forget, Icke has been saying this stuff for almost 15 years, so over that time he has been disturbingly prophetic which just adds to his credibility. Fifteen years ago he could be dismissed as simply a ranting clown, now those of us who have some sort of clue that "things are amiss" are forced to re-evaluate his claims.
On the other hand, there are a growing number of people who prefer to take Icke's writing as totally literal, which obviously, is far too much for most sheeple to accept. The controlling elite with hybrid DNA who are able to shape shift into creatures that look like Reptiles and are somehow directed in their agenda by entities outside of our realm? Say again?! Well, the strange thing is, many other "elite" people have very similar views, who have no interest or connection with Icke. Very similar themes occur in various genres of literature over many hundreds of years. Why is this? Why are the elite so interested in human DNA? Why do we have the R-complex as part of our brains? Why is the story of human evolution (which is what my training orginally was in) so murky, corrupt and political? Why won't "Atlantis" go away (even Plato wrote about its existence in literal terms)? Why is quantum physics, holographic and string theories now providing framework for the existence of other dimensions and realms beyond our normal senses? Why don't we realize that we perceive with our 5 senses only 1% of the known light / sound spectrum (which is less than cats and dogs, by the way)? Why is the UFO community so convoluted and seemingly infiltrated? Why all the talk and "whistle-blowing" regarding underground caverns, bases, and even cities? I don't claim to know... One thing I do know is that prior to reading Icke, the events that endlessly unfold in the World seemed so mysterious, unrelated, random, pointless, maddening, disheartening, etc. But Icke's ideas really do de-mystify and explain a great many things that have occurred and continue to occur, albeit in a way that literally challenges you to redefine your reality. Unfortunately, post-Icke, the World appears to me more evil, maddening, and scary, which are themes that he tries to address and quell in his most recent works.
Never mind the typos in this book, it's Icke very controversial ideas (many of which are borrowed and pieced together) that are worth the price, metaphorical or not. And the ultimate value is discovering why you might have such visceral reactions to those ideas. In other words, it's a way of understanding the depth that you might be burried within the Matrix. But, I would suggest that there is a REASON why you read the book, or are reading this and contemplating buying it; follow your instincts not your conditioned knee-jerk reactions.
Terrible .......2006-05-30
Where do I begin ?
Icke has absolutely no idea what he's talking about in this book. He relentlessly mixes facts with fiction to create a rather disturbing cocktail of nonsense for the reader.
Does anyone honestly believe that reptillian beings actually exist in any form other than subconscious manifestations of serpent archetypes ? The fact that NO ONE has actually witnessed a reptillian being publicly speaks volumes about Icke's delusional psyche.
I get the feeling that Icke wrote this book to satisfy peoples curiosity and to feed them what they want to hear. This is Icke's MO as of the biggest secret - mix fact and fiction together to create fear and misdirection at the same time. All the while Icke pockets a princely sum for his overpriced "books" and phony "lectures".
I'm certainly not going to give Icke one penny for this diseased garbage. He should be ashamed of himself for writing such mindless unsupported rubbish.
Political/social dissent literature.......2006-05-06
If a fiction writer actually BELIEVES to be true the fiction he writes, does that free him to write a wilder, more detailed story? Icke proves that it does.
Conspiracy literature is the new literature of dissent. It's not difficult to deconstruct the mythology that Icke has pulled together. The world, he claims, is "secretly" controlled by shape-shifting reptiles who also happen to commit unspeakable crimes against children. Bush, Clinton, and the other world rulers are certainly "reptilian" in that they are cold-blooded men governed by their deeper animal instincts and desires, such as greed and bloodlust. They are "shape-shifters" because they are deceitful, liars, and they cannot be "pinned down" (as if Kerry is the only one who ever "flip-flopped" on an issue).
Our rulers are "snakes." Their policies are the moral equivalent of child molestation, because they starve, bomb, fail to educate, or otherwise oppress most of the world's children.
Icke's ideas (outrageous, of course, on the literal level) provide his readers with a mythology and meta-narrative of the world in an age when traditional mythologies and religions have crumbled. Some of you readers need to get a grip on yourselves. Read properly, David Icke can provide some fascinating LITERARY insights into the world we all live in.
(For some reason I can't edit my review, I can really only give this THREE STARS because of Dave's bad grammar and run-on sentences.)
Well it did cause icke to go on writing more books.......2006-03-17
did anyone who reviewed this book actually go and look at the bloodline connection, PLEASE!!!!! atleast if there are no reptilians then WTF do all the world leaders have to share their bloodline connections for???
icke does not appear to me to be perfect, i am not either, and i am not defending him, i have seen him defend himself on many occasions, but atleast he tries to put forward many extreme things, true or not, i think that icke deserves 4 stars, for interests sake.
oh yes for those wanting to know more about the illuminati / all seeing eye cult side of things, read the illuminatus trillogy by robert anton wilson and robert shea, wilson is a high recomendation of mine.
go icke and all who put forward their theories on the all seeing eye of lucifer.
Book Description
Building on the foundations of its predecessor volume, Matrix Analysis, this book treats in detail several topics with important applications and of special mathematical interest in matrix theory not included in the previous text. These topics include the field of values, stable matrices and inertia, singular values, matrix equations and Kronecker products, Hadamard products, and matrices and functions. The authors assume a background in elementary linear algebra and knowledge of rudimentary analytical concepts. The book should be welcomed by graduate students and researchers in a variety of mathematical fields both as an advanced text and as a modern reference work.
Customer Reviews:
the sequel to "Matrix Analysis".......2007-01-15
This book is a sequel to, and a worthy successor of, "Matrix Analysis". The latter was directed mostly at methods applicable to solving generic matrix problems. Whereas the present book takes a more focused view. Its topics should be understood as more specialised. Like the case where a matrix might be upper triangular and in positive or non-negative definite form. Or where certain assumptions might be made about a matrix's eigenvalues.
There are some nice theorems proved about the spectral properties of various types of matrices. More to the point, the book has many useful ways to actually find the eigenvalues of such matrices. Where these methods might be more efficient than the generic methods of the earlier book.
A great reference source for advanced matrix analysis.......2000-08-28
Horn and Johnson's MATRIX ANALYSIS AND TOPICS IN MATRIX ANALYSIS are true classics (like Knuth's Art of Computer Programming). You will find classic theorems and lemmas in matrix theory and linear algebra here along with their proofs (some of these are not found elsewhere).
TOPICS IN MATRIX ANALYSIS contains a lot of stuff including LMI's, Kronecker and Hadamard products of matrices and their properties etc. I found this book indispensible when I was studying Semidefinite Programming.
Both these books are now available in paperback (cost around 30+) dollars each. I have recently purchased both copies and can only strongly recommend them to anyone else.
