Difficult Fun.......2005-08-15
This book is enjoyable if you like a mental challenge. You get a good idea of how well you did against others who answered the same questions.
Fantastic Puzzle Collection!.......2005-04-04
I've ordered two puzzle books from Nathan Haselbauer and can categorically state that his books are the best!
The Mammoth Book of IQ Puzzles is a great collection of puzzles of all kinds. It's both fun and maddening to figure out - or TRY to figure out, in many cases - the variety of puzzles you'll find in this book.
I especially liked the difficulty rating of each puzzle; readers can target the difficulty level they like and gain great satisfaction as they solve more and more difficult puzzles.
Also pleasing is the wide variety of puzzles in this book. Whether you enjoy math, logic, or word puzzles the most, you'll find something here to challenge you and to enjoy.
As a member too of Mr. Haselbauer's International High IQ Society, I can confirm that this book is a great extension of the original puzzles you'll find on the Society website. If you've enjoyed this book, please visit the group at www.highiqsociety.org and try your hand at the puzzles there; perhaps you'll become a member!

Good, good, one........2007-04-17
Very enjoyable! Pleasured to leave stumped, think about & return to solve.
not IQ tests.......2007-03-08
This book uses its title to fool you into thinking you will be taking actual IQ tests. Not so. The authors have compiled "brain teaser" type questions and called them IQ tests. On top of that, many of the questions are the "cutesy" type, the kind you don't get the answer to and then when you see the answer you think, "Oh, man! I never would've gotten that!" Don't waste your money. If you want a book of IQ tests, there are others out there, TRUE IQ tests. This book is a scam.
Fun puzzle book.......2005-04-29
This fun book is divided into four sections: Elementary Level, Challenging Level, Master Level, and Comprehensive Supertests. As you might guess from those section titles some of the tests are much easier than others and within the tests some types of questions are much easier than others. Each test series contains a wide cross-section of different types of puzzles so you are tested thoroughly. For example, there are diagrammatic puzzles, probability questions, crosswords, cryptograms, anagrams and other questions that really don't fit neatly into any of these categories. Self-scoring answer sheets complete the book and let you know approximately where you fall. I found that it was not uncommon to vary by as much as ten points around a median.
Fun to do and interesting, The Big Book of IQ Tests is recommended to anyone who enjoys solving puzzles.
Do not buy this 'Loser' book, period........2003-09-26
As to the criticism of there being many culturally biases (or more accurately, culturally loaded) questions, I think this criticism as it applies to this book is not a legitimate one. However, there are MANY other problems with this book and the writers as well as the publishers SHOULD be ashamed of putting their names on the cover. There is very little in this book other than the tests and what is supposed to be a scoring matrix. There are two pages in the beginning that is haphazard and unrelated nonsense that seems to have been written by someone who was on a jag and riding a rough subway ride at the time. Such paragraph long topics such as what crossword puzzles are, and who invented the rules of what we now recognize as probability, etc. That's right, these paragraphs are there and unrelated to each other and also do not relate to anything else in the book. The last such paragraph explains that mensa does not recognize these tests as legitimate IQ tests, and then we are off to the races, as it were. The answer section to the first test has no weight for each question. I suppose we can assume that they are each worth one point each. The other test answers however do tell us how to weight each question (how many points for that question, even if it's just taken to be one point.) Here's the real kicker that prompted me to write this rebuke. The last section called `Comprehensive Supertests' is comprised of two tests. Number 1 test is comprised of three questions and the Number 2 test is comprised of 12 questions. `Long-story-short, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GRADE THESE TESTS OR THIS SECTION. The other sections has shown that the ceilings for the tests in each section is exceded on the scoring matrix. This is all well and good as long as we can make sense of the weight of each questions and can `add-up' our score. In the `supertest' section, the scoring matrix does not work if we give each question one score point, and since we can assume that this section has the ceiling exceeded as the other three sections did, yet we do not know how to weigh each question, THEN THIS WHOLE SECTION IS IMPOSSIBLE TO SCORE.
It seems that the authors Norman Sullivan and Philip J. Carter earn a failing grade in their attempt at an IQ test book. Save your money for people who earn it.
Title is misleading........2002-03-09
This book's title is misleading. It should be titled something like "The Big Book of Brain Teasers". It should NOT have the words "IQ Tests" in its title. If you want an accurate assessment of your IQ, look elsewhere. Here's why:
1) It contains too many culture-specific questions. A valid IQ test (i.e., one that "accurately" measures one's intelligence quotient) should contain few, if any, culture-specific questions. This book contains a lot of them.
2) It also contains too many questions that have multiple "correct" answers. Once again, in a properly constructed IQ test, for each question there will be one, and ONLY one, correct answer. This book contains numerous questions that could be answered "correctly" in more than one way.
In short, if you enjoy solving puzzles, etc., for fun, then you MIGHT enjoy this book (I say "might" because you may very well end up being frustrated by the multitude of questions which could be answered "correctly" a number of ways), but if you're looking for a properly constructed IQ test that will give you an accurate measurement of your intelligence, you'll likely be disappointed. I sure was.
Book Description
The Ultimate IQ Test Book is the biggest book of IQ practice tests available. Written and compiled by IQ-test experts, it contains 1000 practice questions organized into 25 tests, with a simple guide to assessing individual performance. The questions themselves are very similar to those faced by candidates in actual IQ tests. They are multi-discipline and include verbal, numerical, and diagrammatic reasoning questions, so that readers can practice on all the different types of questions they are likely to encounter. Working through the questions can help anyone improve their vocabulary and develop powers of calculation and logical reasoning. By studying the different types of test and recognizing the different types of questions, readers can improve their test scores and increase their IQ rating. The Ultimate IQ Test Book is valuable to those who have to take an IQ test, but it's also great fun for anyone who likes to stretch their mind for their own entertainment.

An uproarious companion to Heads or Tails and Jack's New Power
According to his new motto - A WRITER'S JOB IS TO TURN HIS WORST EXPERIENCES INTO MONEY - Jack Henry is going to be filty rich even before he gets out of junior high, for his life is filled with the worst experiences imaginable. In the course of the few months covered in this cycle of interlinked stories, Jack is humiliated by a gorgeous syncronized swimmer, gets a tattoo the size of an ant on his big toe, flubs an IQ test and nearly fails wood shop, and has to dig up his dead dog not once but twice. And that's not the half of it. But, as The School Library Journal put it, Jack's "a survivor, an 'everyboy' whose world may be wacko but whose heart and spirit are eminently sane." Jack may not end up rolling in dough, but he, along with his humorously off-kilter familly, always keeps on trying.

Emily's Review .......2006-05-12
This is a great book. Most parts were really interesting. At first I thought I wasn't going to like it because I like books with beating up people, gangs, drugs, stuff like that so I tried something new and I liked this book. But Jack's Black Book has none of that.
Jack is the main character . Every one thinks and tells him he is stupid, a moron, or an idiot. But he is actually smart. But he keeps trying hard. He does some sick stuff that's gross. He shows his class his dead dog coffin. Jack wants to be a writer so bad that he makes tragic things happen to him just so he can write about it. I feel bad for him a lot cause no one has confidence in him and they're always putting him down on him self.
It's really the readers choice if they want to read the book or not. But you should be 11+ cause younger readers might not get the story.
My L.A. Homework ;D.......2005-11-28
Have you ever been to a buffet and didn't know what you want eat?
The book is Jack's Black Book, and it is broken into three random topics. Not knowing what you will get or how it's going to turn out. I was told by my 8th grade Language Arts teacher; Mr.Jackson, that it was a pretty good book. I've been reading this book by Jack Gantos and it is very good because I am also a teenager achieving a dream. This book talks about a 13 year-old boy named Jack Henry and his adventures of becoming a famous writer. It all starts out at flunking the IQ test in school and not being able to continue on to Writer's School. He is only allowed to continue onto the writer's school by completing workshop class. Although this book has many humorous quotes and slang it's not actually talking about him becoming a writer. Slowly the book talks about him torturing a hyper dog, building a dog graveyard for school, and finally about his fanatical neighbors. As well as, little topics about going to a Latin club as an excuse to skip detention to making money for his Dad, to prove to him that he can be a writer. Through all of these moments he writes little short entries into his Black Book. "A writer's job is to turn his worst experiences into money" This is Jack Henry's motto and probably is true because his life is filled with worst experiences imagined. If you like school yard kinds of books this is your one.
Jack's Black Book.......2004-10-06
"Then the odor of rotting BeauBeau hit me, I could feel my face contorting as if someone were trying to rip it off, and I began to gag."
This quote is from Jack's Black Book. This a story about a young boy, Jack Henry, who wants to become a writer, but when he takes the IQ test it says that he is not smart enough to do anything but manual labor. The book tells all about what kind of troubles and adventures he gets into over the summer, and never giving up on his dream of becoming a writer.
Jack Gantos also writes other stories about fictional events, however his tales about Jack Henry are all true events that happened to him during his childhood. He also writes children's books. Some of his other books include tales of Joey Pigza.
My recommendation for this book is for anyone who has a sense of humor and needs a good laugh, but isn't too light at the stomach. Girls or boys would enjoy this book. Probably this would be more organized under children's literature. Personally, this is one of the best books I've ever read.

CRITICAL REVIEW OF JACK'S BLACK BOOK
Have you ever walked into a room and forgotten what you went in there for? Well I think this is what the author did when he was writing this book. He would start on a funny interesting story and change to another theme for the story. The name of the story is JACK'S BLACK BOOK by Jack Gantos and I'm sorry to say I didn't enjoy it.
This fictional book is about the adventures of Jack Henry. He is a fourteen-year-old boy who wants to be a writer more than anything in the world. At least that's how the book started out. The story then got away from that idea and it went into Jack building a dog casket in wood shop, his horrible first date and then his tales of working while his parents went out of town. Lastly, the story went on about his bizarre next door neighbor and their adventures together. It was often frustrating to read because the author would make me be content with the story and then totally change it to a completely different subject and never finish up with the previous idea.
Despite his random subject changes, the author did have very good detail. Did I mention he could be very funny too? Throughout the book the author showed that he has a good sense of humor. However, I was very disappointed that he didn't have a single positive character with a good attitude in the entire book. All the people in the book were very negative and I found that to be very depressing. Honestly, throughout the book I was hoping to finish so I could read something else.
Still, I kept reading and the author continued to keep changing where he was going with his story. If you're like me and you enjoy reading a book full of adventure, fun and suspense, then this book is not for you. However, if your having trouble sleeping some nights then whip out JACK'S BLACK BOOK and you'll fall fast asleep.

After a gentle 'warm-up' section, the puzzles and tests get progressively more challenging over the course of the book. There is a hints section for readers who get stuck, as well as a complete set of answers for every test at the back of the book.
After the 'warm-up' section, there are puzzles and tests on 'lateral thinking', 'fun with numbers', 'logic puzzles', 'geometrical puzzles' and 'difficult puzzles'. Readers will soon become familiar and comfortable with a range of tricks and tests, from magic number squares to Fibonacci numbers.

This book won't allow you to deterine you IQ.......2007-07-25
This book contains 10, 90-minute IQ tests, each containing 40 questions, but you won't be able to determine your IQ. The author states in the introduction, "The tests that follow have been newly compiled for this book and are not, therefore, standardised, so an actual IQ assessment cannot be given." Then what is the purpose of the book? Based on the number of questions answered correctly, you can determine if you are Exceptional (36-40 correct), Excellent (31-35 correct), Very good (25-30 correct), Good (19-24 correct) or Average (14-18 correct). If you are looking to determine your IQ, you will have to find a different book.
Offering both education and entertainment value.......2005-02-08
Want to exercise your mind? Improve your IQ? Or just learn how it can operate? IQ tests are organized into 10 timed tests, of 40 questions each, and come with a guide for assessing performance. Understand how their recurring themes work and get a leg up on the workplace IQ test with the helpful primer The Times Book Of IQ Tests Book 4, offering both education and entertainment value.
Book Description
How smart are you? Though these tough little quizzes offer plenty of entertainment, they're designed to be similar to the ones found in actual IQ tests. Five sections focus individually on verbal, visual, numerical, calculation, and logic skills, while a final chapter called IQ Testers brings every type of question together in twenty tests, with fifteen questions in each. That way, testers can see how well they do in each discipline, and identify their particular strengths and weaknesses. Those with a competitive streak can check out the performance guide-or make it harder by going against the clock.
Book Description
This book will train for both accuracy and speed in navigating common types of questions on a standardized psychometric test, developing strategies for the most challenging logic problems, and making the most of natural intelligence.
Customer Reviews:
Iým embarrassed for MENSA.......2004-04-05
The book needed better proofreading, Seriously, what test has duplicate questions (from memory, it was test 3 questions 3 and 7 are identical)? I specifically looked up this website to write this review and I was comforted by the fact someone else beat me to it. Other answers are just plain wrong. You would think, these people are obliviously smarter than me, I must be wrong! But know the answers given in the back contradict the problems (cant work the problem backwards). I suggest someone at MENSA should attempt to work through potential books with their names on it before having the books published. The title is misleading, mostly the back is just an answer key, I rarely seen more than a 2 word explaination of a problem. The book How To Excel At IQ Tests does not help you do anything of the sort. How are you to excel without explaination of answers or even tips?
Not for preparing Mensa IQ test.......2003-03-11
I had almost passed the Mensa test in the past, and I wanted to learn tricks for becoming faster and finally pass it. But this book is bad for me, the title is misleading. Here it's mostly about numerical and verbal problems, while the real Mensa test contains neither (questions are instead mostly like "which picture completes the serie?").
It might be helpful for preparing other tests, though.

Great book.......2005-12-30
I really enjoy personality tests...both giving and taking them. I had so much fun taking the 51 tests in this book and evaluating my friends. If you are interested in learning more about yourself or you just want a few evenings of fun...this is the book for you. I think I am going to print some of the tests and use them at my next party.
Pleasant Surprise.......2005-12-29
This book was recommended by a friend and I not only found it to be personally helpful, but have incorporated it into our organizational Supervisory Management Program. It is entertaining, but very conducive to learning which is a difficut task with most seasoned managers. This book is well written, has many useful self analysis evaluations that are fun, but will make you stop and think. It is usefull and a very pleasant surprise.
Great Reading and a Fun time.......2005-12-24
I found this book by accident and started reading parts of it, and then could not put it down. There are just so many things that make you think the Author followed you around, and knows the story of your life. I would recommend this anyone to discover more about themselves. Whoever Doroty Mc Coy is, I hope she keeps writing.
