Book Description

In the tiny Russian province of Kalmykia, obsession with chess has reached new heights. Its leader, a charismatic and eccentric millionaire/ex--car salesman named Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, is a former chess prodigy and the most recent president of FIDE, the world's controlling chess body. Despite credible allegations of his involvement in drug running, embezzlement, and murder, the impoverished Kalmykian people have rallied around their leader's obsession---chess is played on Kalmykian prime-time television and is compulsory in Kalmykian schools. In addition, Kalmyk women have been known to alter their traditional costumes of pillbox hats and satin gowns to include chessboard-patterned sashes. The Chess Artist is both an intellectual journey and first-rate travel writing dedicated to the love of chess and all of its related oddities, writer and chess enthusiast J. C. Hallman explores the obsessive hold chess exerts on its followers by examining the history and evolution of the game and the people who dedicate their lives to it. Together with his friend Glenn Umstead, an African-American chessmaster who is arguably as chess obsessed as Ilyumzhinov, Hallman tours New York City's legendary chess district, crashes a Princeton Math Department game party, challenges a convicted murderer to a chess match in prison, and travels to Kalmykia, where they are confronted with members of the Russian intelligence service, beautiful translators who may be spies, seven-year-old chess prodigies, and the sad blight of a land struggling toward capitalism. In the tradition of The Professor and the Madman, Longitude, and The Orchid Thief, Hallman transforms an obsessive quest for obscure things into a compulsively readable and entertaining weaving of travelogue, journalism, and chess history.

4 out of 5 stars A peek inside the chess world.......2007-06-22

Chess players can be very intriguing. At the highest levels, it is difficult to imagine what they go through and why they do it. It is a competitive obsession.
The reader is led through the world of a competitive chess player with some great insights of the motivation and culture in which a chess player immerses himself/herself.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting at times, but it doesn't quite satisfy.......2007-04-29

The Chess Artist contains some interesting observations about the game, and the occasional worthwhile excursus, but it never quite closes in on an interesting story. This may be because so much of it is built on intentionally arbitrary encounters, events seemly engineered to generate something to write about (e.g. chess games played in prisons, or among a museum's Duchamp collection). I enjoyed it, and I learned something, but I had hoped for more.

5 out of 5 stars you don't have to like chess to love this book.......2006-12-12

even if you don't like chess, this book is interesting enough for you to enjoy. it's part travel narrative, part outsiders look into the world of chess. the book is well written, extremely interesting, and is informative as well as entertaining. i like chess, so i enjoyed it, but i lent it to someone who doesn't like chess, and she enjoyed it just as much. hallman paints a detailed picture of chess city in the former soviet union, as well as personalities of people who play chess. for me, the best part was his description of the crazy subculture and chess playing in the park in NYC as well as the "skittles room" of the tournaments. i wish there were more books about chess like this one. great book, definately recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-11-19

This is a great read even if you hate chess, this by far my favorite book about a chess player or players( I have read 2 others ,see my reviews)I would like to read a sequel to it.I was captivated by, and enthralled with this book!Hallman is a great writer, please write more books on chess players, maybe follow Nakamura and write about it!.

4 out of 5 stars The weird underbelly of an intellectual pastime.......2006-09-21

J.C. Hallman's The Chess Artist is structured around a trip that the author took with his friend Glenn, the chess player of the book's title, to Kalmykia, a crumbling Russian Republic on the northwest shore of the Caspian Sea. Hallman was interested in interviewing Kalmykia's despotic president, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, a former chess prodigy and the president of the World Chess Federation (FIDE), who was using chess "as a tool to unify and mollify his people." (He had made chess instruction compulsory in schools, for example.) Woven around the story of their journey are chapters on chess history--its development and geographical migration across a thousand years, the history of its individual pieces--and Hallman's further adventures with Glenn: marathon chess sessions over the internet, formal chess competitions, blindfolded chess and speed chess, chess played in prison and in Princeton, and the various characters they ran across on their adventures--child prodigies and the denizens of Dickensian chess shops and the down-and-out chess hustlers of New York's Washington Square Park.

Part travelogue, then, and part history, Hallman's book is also an exploration of both the international subculture of competitive chess and of his traveling companion. For most of the period covered by the book, Glenn was ranked as a chess master--exceptionally good but well below the grandmasters who form the true elite of the chess world. Glenn is an enigmatic character. A germophobic 39-year-old with a genius for the game and poor grammar, he is apparently incapable of consistently making smart decisions in the real world. Divorced and perpetually broke, almost childish at times, his friendship seems to be to a great extent a burden. Hallman has a tendency, actually, to write about Glenn as if he were a sort of lab animal, whose mannerisms and mode of play are alike under scrutiny.

"He shrugged and performed a gesture that was new to me, opening his palms suddenly and at the same time contorting his face to an expression of exaggerated surprise."

Annoying and strange, given to marking promising relationships with ceremonial whistling, Glenn is also a sad figure, a broken man "spiraling toward nothingness, a waste of twenty years of effort and energy." One wonders what Glenn thought of his presentation in the book.

The Chess Artist is very well researched and thick with information. And it is punctuated by some truly wonderful, sometimes poetic writing:

"The train was all lullaby, the gyroscopic jostle of the tracks, the steady click of the wheels like the eighth notes of some slower melody, the stars stationary out the small window, all of it a lull of travel nostalgia, a cradle or warm womb, Glenn and I like twins incubating in that cramped space."

In Kalmykia Hallman is served "a genocide of crayfish"; in a prison cafeteria the fare is instead "hockey pucks of meat like the leftover scrapings of a botched autopsy." One chess player they observe has the "eyebrows of a demon," while another is "a nondescript man who fit the profile of a serial killer--short, well-groomed, quiet, and very dangerous."

Hallman's writing is riddled with such evocative descriptions. This is both wonderful and, surprisingly perhaps, problematic: the problem is that Hallman tends to lavish his well-written descriptions on nearly every minor character who crosses his path, so that the reader is met with too much information. Hallman's flair is obvious. But after a time, the personalities in the book tend to blend together.

It is tempting to say that Hallman does for chess what Stefan Fatsis does for Scrabble in his book Word Freak, exposing the weird underbelly of an intellectual pastime, the obsessives who sacrifice sleep and hygiene over their chosen game. Hallman's book, though, is a more serious and more difficult read. Presumably, the more familiar a reader is with chess, the more he will get out of the book. I myself do not play, but I was able to understand and appreciate, at least on some level, most of what the author had to say. Non-chess players should not be afraid of diving in.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of positional exercises.......2007-05-17

Whether or not you are positional chess genius, you will need a lot of hard work and practice to bring out your talents. This book furnishes 150 chess positions for just that kind of training. The 150 positions are split among ten chapters of 15 positions each; within each chapter there are five problems worth 5 points, five worth 10 points, and five worth 15 points. For each test position, the reader needs to find the correct plan, identify all of the relevant factors leading to the correct decision. If you need a hint, the author provides a separate section of very brief hints (one per position), the use of which is optional, and which incurs a penalty in points each time it is consulted. All of the chapters are roughly of equal difficulty overall, so that the reader can gauge his/her progress throughout the book.

This is really a great collection of positions. I noticed that they cover all sorts of very important topics, such as outposts, weak squares, better minor piece, freeing pawn break, etc., usually in rich combination. Very often, part of the right strategy is to prevent a plan by the opponent. Nothing is absolutely trivial, and the hard problems can be extremely challenging. Accordingly I think this is best suited for players 1600 and up, who have had some previous background in chess strategy (e.g., Silman's HTRYC). Most of the positions are from actual games, in which case we get the actual moves in the solution, along with supporting discussion. In a few cases the positions were thought up by the author, and I found them to be good exercises, too. The solutions are suitably detailed. For full credit, the reader must justify the answer completely - this means looking at all of the critical variations (including tactics, if need be), and evaluating possible outcomes accurately.

My only serious criticism of this book is that every single problem position has a caption below it that sets up the problem itself. This, unfortunately, detracts from the instructive purpose of the exercise since it gives an unrealistic hint about what to look for. In a couple cases, the hint is almost a dead giveaway. Readers should instead cover up all of these captions while studying the diagram, and try to use their normal routine for evaluating the position. For this inconvenience, a deduction of one star. I am not a fan of the hint section, either. I would recommend instead that readers attempt each problem to the absolute best of their abilities without the hint or caption, then make a *firm commitment* to a move, before turning directly to the solution. This is better preparation for real battles at the chessboard.

Overall, these exercises are a notch easier than the ones in Aagaard's "Excelling at Positional Chess," and a half notch harder than the ones in Silman's HTRYC Workbook. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of the better positional puzzle books.......2007-04-19

There are very few good positional chess puzzle book on the market, but this is definitely one of the better. Unfortunately this book (as many other chess problem books) presents chess problems in all levels of difficulty (I think this is related to market, cost and economy for each chess-publishing house).

In Angus's there are 3 levels of difficulty and chess players who manage to solve chess problems at level 1 (among 1600 in rating), may not at all be able to solve problems at level 3 (2300-2400 in rating). So a player rated around 1700 may only benefit 50% from this book. This book is perhaps an expensive book for a player at this rating level.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book!.......2004-09-27

This is without a doubt my favorite chess book! The heart of this book is ten tests of fifteen puzzles each. Each test is divided into 5 easy, 5 intermediate, and 5 difficult problems. This helps you to guage how much effort you should put into each problem.

I find that puzzle books are the most effective, practical, way to improve my playing strength.

The solution to each problem is crisp and clear. After pondering one of his problems, when I finally see the answer, it's like a light-bulb is turned on. "Aha! Yes, clearly that's the best move!" When this happens, I feel I've truly learned something that will stay with me, and benefit me later when I'm actually playing a game.

The book is nicely printed, with large diagrams so that you have the choice to either set up the position on a board, or to solve them directly from the book-- very convenient when travelling or otherwise away from home.

The author has obviously picked the problems very carefully, and scored the possible solutions diligently; so that the learning experience for the reader is greatly enhanced.

After I worked through this book, I felt that my playing strength improved about 100 rating points. I think the level of this book is useful for players in the 1700-2300 range (for reference, I fall into the middle of this range).

I loved this book!! Kudos to Angus Dunnington for a fine work.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2005-05-02

Being a very aggresive and tactical player myself and never having read a game collection of Tal's, I was very excited about buying this book. However, this book is not really what I'd expected. Rather than present and show you Tal's best games and combinations with annotations, each chapter begins with one or two of Tal's games and then gives you puzzles which are positions from Tal's games in which you are meant to work out his continuation. While this format might appeal to some people, it didn't appeal to me. That said, it is still an excellent book for what it is. I just think you ought to know that it is more a puzzle book with a few of Tal's games rather than a game collection, because the title can be quite misleading. This way you won't be dissapointed if, like me, you want a game collection of Tal's. If this is true for you, I recommend looking into "The Life and games of Mikhail Tal" or "The Magic of Mikhail Tal", neither book of which I own but have good reveiws and are books that I will be looking into because they both seem to match my specification criteria.

5 out of 5 stars one of most interesting book about Fischer........2005-01-31

I have 4 or 5 books about Fischer, but this one is different. It shows Fischer, the person. Seven contributors recalled their personal contacts with Fischer. Their encounters were first-hand, so their stories are truer. There are no deep chess analyses in this book, however they are the important games during Fischer's career. This is no problem, because I can find the analyses in other books or magazines, or even from chess programs. The interviews, stories, experience, observation that the authors shared enlighten me many points about Fischer. He is incredible, demanding bunch of money to play the championship with Spassky; then rejecting more money when having to defend his title. He turned down large sum of money when asked to write a book about the match. How could he rack up long strings of wins without allowing a single draw along? And these games were against the GMs. This book also has many good pictures along his exciting career. A nice article written by Unzicker near the end showed how fairly Fischer treated chess-fellows. This book could a short historical document illustrating the rise and fall of a chess titan.

5 out of 5 stars Want to be stronger at Chess tactics & Combinations.......2005-12-15

I bought this book specifically to improve my middle-game play.
I wanted to improve my tactical vision and better calculate tactics. My rating is USCF 2180.

    This book is excellent because
    1) there aren't any long unncessary write-ups like , "Here I played White ,etc, etc". Pure mental training
    2) Exercizes are gradual : simple at first, then not so simple and then really hard to see it all
    3) you can progress throught the book, divided in 12 chapters. see how you rate on chapter 1 ( scoring system provided ), and on chapter 7, and compare.

Also, I like the fact that if there is a wrong move, or alternate variation, the author will explain why such move fails. Each exercize is reviewed by a strong GM with several variations detailed if needed.

I did find some isolated cases where I went to the computer to check additional defensive moves not covered , or typo in diagram/solution. This covers less than 10% of the examples though.
Finally, there are a lot of Plaskett own games which I didn't know about, or positions taken from interesting games played in opens. The selection is original but covers most tactical themes.
This is a book for someone who knows about themes ( forks, double attack, Pawn destruction, quiet moves ) but wants to get closer to International master level.

All in all, a book I recommend highly for anyone -with Elo/Rating > 1900- eager to improve in chess tactics.

2 out of 5 stars Challenging positions, good annotations, poor scoring system.......2002-08-09

I have a mixed feelings about this book. Unfortunately, the negatives slightly outweigh positive. GM Plaskett put together a series of 12 tests, each with 15 diagrams. You get points based on accuracy and depth of your analysis. There is a "hint" feature which will cost you points.

    Suggested readers level -
In my opinion players rated under 2000 should look for other books as majority of testing positions will be a frustrating experience. Don't get me wrong, even 1600 rated would benefit from working through author's answers to many "15 point" problems, however, the value of such a lesson is not that great.

Quality of Positions and Annotations -
VERY GOOD. Mainly, the positions were unfamiliar to me. Many from GM Plaskett's own games. Been a player or a witness, he has some additional angle to the annotations. This increases value of notes and also brings some fun.

    Scoring system -
POOR - my biggest complain with this book - scoring is way too simplistic. In many cases I believe scores don't correspond to relative difficulties of positions. "Price" for hint is outrages, comparing to the actual help you get. For example for 15 point problem (T#3, P#15) - rook endgame - question ask how Black can use his pass pawn. Hint will cost you 6 points and you will find out that you should consider
"advancing the pawn at all costs". I would expect this to be initial thought of anyone who read the question and studied the problem. So hint doesn't bring anything new to the table, yet takes away 40% of maximum points. Finally, when you do finish the test, study the solutions and get your overall score, what are you suppose to do with it? There is no relative strength table or anything else that would help you to measure your result.

    Accuracy of presentation -
AVERAGE - I have only been through one test so far, but already I saw a diagram (T#1, P#9) with a "ghost" knight. I also run into the position (T#1, P#11) that specifically claimed to have only one solution - mate in 5 and asked you to find it. However, even without PC help, I found another solution (in his solution -play 3.Rf7+ and 4.Be5# or 4.Bc7#)

Overall, good testing book for higher rated player 2000+. Especially, if he has several friends with similar ratings to compare results with. Lower rated players and beginners, consider something else, for example Emms' Ultimate Puzzle book or Hall's Combination Challenge.

    Good luck,
    Copyrighted by me!

5 out of 5 stars An engaging book of chess puzzles.......2002-06-08

5 out of 5 stars Chess books do not get any better than this.......2005-06-25

This book is basically a biography via the subject's own writings and papers. Winter does, in fact, include plenty of his own (excellent) prose, but the meat of the book is Capablanca's own writing, much of it new to me, and I've read quite a bit on Capa through the years.

Especially interesting are Capa's thoughts on contemporary players and his early game annotations when he was writing for various chess magazines early in his career. For example, he annotated every game of the epic Lasker-Schlechter match, and they are all included here.

Although Capa is infamous for writing less than virtually any other World Champion, he still penned quite a number of articles, all of them of interest, and all, or nearly all, of which are collected here.

Winter is known for being a stickler about documentation, so you will not find a lot of unfounded gossip or apochryphal stories or legend here. This is a refreshing dfference from the large majority of chess biographies, including other books on Capa. Capablanca's career is full of enough true mindboggling stories to need to make anything up.

This book is a splendid achievement by Winter, and I had a difficult time putting it down. I plan on going back to it again and again as a reference, and, of course, to play over the games which Capablanca had annotated.

    5 out of 5 stars Completely Outstanding.......2002-06-01

As a big fan of details and facts, Winter is always for me. He`s the best chess historian by far, and this may be his best book to date. Even if you`re not a serious Capablanca fan, this book will keep you entertained with those little special events that make life so interesting (like including a section of an article by Sergei Prokofiev about his playing in a simul against Capbablanca). I also didn`t know until reading the Capablanca writings from articles included in this book that the World Champion really did have a nice sense of humour. Engrossing, filled with facts, all attributions in order... but by no means is it dry. Quite the contrary, this will also touch on your emotions.

Certainly one of the best books I`ve ever seen.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive Capablanca biography, with lots of games too!.......1999-12-09

Winter has researched an enormous amount of material on Capablanca, and documented his sources thoroughly. He has a commendable distaste for unsubstantiated anecdotes. It includes both significant biographical material as well as many fine games not usually found in the main game collections (which are highly recommended by the way), and often with Capa's own notes.

Winter has also unearthed some very interesting game annotations by Capa, including the Lasker-Schlechter match, a famous Spielmann loss to Tarrasch, a Janowski brilliancy, etc. There are also fascinating reports by Capa on tournaments such as his greatest victory, New York 1927, and the Chess Olympiad in Buenos Aires, 1939, where Capa made the best score on top board.

The chapters on his World Championship negotiations and matches with both Lasker and Alekhine make fascinating reading.

There also clear B&W photos of Capa at all stages of life.

5 out of 5 stars This must be for reading and discussing ........2003-01-06

This is a "Review" of a Book that I think is important. I have just got an idea about the context, but as a pedagogue in Violinplaying and Languages I am all for studying this book closer. I am not a sentimental Man, but I feel that this book has a lot to give. Our school-system (all over the World) is not respecting the little Child. It is a start for the competition against one's fellow-students. It should instead be a Competition
    together with one's Fellow-Human-beings !

There are NO Bad Pupils - only Bad Teachers !

It's not recommendable to write about a book that I haven't read,
    but nevertheless in this case, the subject is so important;
to give the Best possible start to our Children !

If the book is a "disaster", it's even more worth studying, because it leads somewhere.
But this is an exception from my side !
