5 out of 5 stars lovely adventure for the open minded.......2007-05-19

It never ceases to amaze me, the level of anger and resentment this book elicits from some while others are of my frame of mind in adoring the creativity here. I am a Pagan and a student of a Mystery School (which, by the way, lists this among recommended reading) but when I read this I didn't find anything offensive, sexist or so outrageous about it at all. It became my favorite pre-bedtime reading because it's beautifully written and I didn't take any of it completely literally. I find it magickally inspiring, but I didn't even think to take the rituals outlined at the end of each chapter (and what a fun idea that was!) and actually do them. It just seemed like great detail in a lovely novel to me. But at the same time some fundamental ideologies and philosophies inherent to the Pagan/Druidic way of life are preset here. It blows me away that Monroe has become such a target of animosity for what I see as a really fun, sweet, imaginative book. I mean, I love Harry Potter but I'm not about to jump off a building on a broom. Let's have a little common sense here. But I also have to add that a teacher of mine I greatly admire shed a little light on why this book comes under such intense attack; when someone exposes things and makes certain discoveries that might not be welcome just yet, it can cause a reactive approach rather than a responsive one. That doens't make it right or wrong, we're all entitled to our opinions, but if you are considering reading this book please pick it up and give it a chance for your own benefit. As with anything, be your own judge; don't love it or hate it, buy it or not, based on anyone else's experience. A book is, to me, a living, breathing being and it's worth giving it the chance to see if it connects to you. If you're here thinking about it, maybe there is something within for you. We all see and experience things through our own subjective filters, right? So let it be what it is for YOU.

As for my experience of it...I keep it next to the bed along with a host of other favorites and it's often a pre-bedtime treat. I find it to be a lovely adventure.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the paper.......2006-10-27

I sell books for a living. Metaphysical, druid, occult, wiccan books.
I won't even carry this one.
Complete drivel. Historically innacurate. Theosophically unsound. A blemish on the face of Paganism in general and an outright insult to druids.
Merlin and Arthur stop along their journey to eat . . .CORN AND PUMPKINS?
Even as a work of fiction it falls short, as it stomps "suspension of belief" into the ground!
Obviously a simple ploy to make money off naive individuals desperate for druid lore, or very gullible readers who simply don't care about what their practicing so long as they get to "play druid". Author has no conscience or ethics in writing this complete piece of crap.
Would personally love to introduce the author to authentic old-school druid practices.
If you absolutely want to see for yourself, check it out at the library. DO NOT SPEND MONEY ON THIS BOOK. You'll be angered and disappointed if you do, and you'll be supporting an ignorant unethical author.

5 out of 5 stars The Book that Launched a Million Neo-Druid Ships........2006-09-12

This was one ,of the many Neo-Druid books,i have ever read.It firstly sparked my imagination in the pagan area. Now,if you look at who has been complaining the loudest, about Douglas Monroe,it's the Wiccan Elite segment .They are claiming ,that they're also "Druid Experts, because it's a sub-set of our Wicca-Paganism".
Remember:Good fences, make good Pagans. You can graze ,on my pagan global heath, but don't[...] on my Druid path. How do you true-blue Wiccans really know what the ancient Druids ,accepted and practised, anymore than what the English Witches had done two thousand years ago??The segment of know-all Wiccan elitists belong in the obliette, for awhile,to cool off a bit.Remember-Pliny,Caesar and Tacitus wrote little ,if anything, about the British Witches. So, you have to keep an open-mind and tap into this imaginative presentation here. It's an enjoyable read ,for anyone's journey into Druidry.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2006-08-09

This book was actually reccommended to me by one of my Druid friends!

I loved the story and the information and theories provided in it. Without taking everything as absolute fact but keeping an open mind about the information presented, I was able to learn SO much about myself and perhaps even the world around me.
I will admit that we need to assume that the information presented is fictional, since Druids have no "How To" books -- however, what was presented in this book was presented well, AND it makes the STORY wonderful to read.
But that's basically all it is. A story.
If you're one of the folks that took the book at face value and drugged yourself with mistletoe (which, by the way, is not nearly as toxic as people think, when made into a tincture), then I'll say you need to do a little bit of your own thinking for a change.

Take what's presented in this book with a grain of salt, and read it as the FICTION it's intended to be.

And by the way, Belladonna (aka "Deadly Nightshade") is safe for human consumption in small amounts, and is frequently used as a sleeping aid. Keep in mind that just because a whole plant is toxic, it doesn't follow that tinctures and teas will be deadly, in correct doses.

So...

Even if you don't believe in Magick and Wizards and Druids, this book is still absolutely lovely. It's a good read and provides a little more flesh to the well known King Arthur stories. Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book!.......2006-03-29

If one is actually using this book as a reference, they show their ignorance to anything Celt or Druid related. In this book he references pumpkins being indigineous to Ireland (which they were not) and female priests as "dryads" which was a greek term for wood nymph. Along with his basically telling readers "Go ahead, suck on some mistletoe, it can't hurt you," he is basically giving them an excuse to remain ignorant to anything Celt or Druid related simply because they can site this one book as a reference. Anyone who is truly interested in learning ANYTHING would know to compare sources before you take anything as 'fact.' If one were to take the time to compare this book to other scholarly works out there they would quickly be clued into the fact that what Monroe has written is lies.
Sadly, he is laughing all the way to the bank, however, not with my money in his pocket. As a Druid, I take offense to any piece of literature that uses our title to back lies. I would say, as the reviews clearly show, anyone recommending this book is in the minority.

4 out of 5 stars Nice addition to library.......2007-08-13

I enjoy gemstone lore and this is a nice addition to my collection. The language is a little dated, a little dry, and the pictures are not great, but the text is substantial. I enjoy reading it. I would recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent book, bad quality photo reproducing.......2007-02-06

The book itself is excellent, an important reference study and a very amusing book for the lover of gems. The author is a leading American scholar in his time, this one is his best: informative with sound statements and principal references. When you read it, you can touch the atmosphere of the great collections arranged by him and the greatest library on precious and semiprecious stones, which he had.

The only disadventage of this edition is the very poor photo reproducing of the original photos. The book contains many rare photos, but the reproducing is so bad, that they make you furious, if you see them.

So, 5 stars to the book itself and zero for the photo reproduction.

3 out of 5 stars The foundation for the study of Gemstone Lore.......2006-10-06

This book ought to be required reading for all studying the occult aspects of gemstones, and even those that are interested in crystal healing. The material presented in this book is very informative, albeit outdated in some respects. Nonetheless, it is necessary to learn what the formative principles are in this field of study, and this book is an excellent look into the earlier work published solely on the topic of gemstones.

5 out of 5 stars Classic on Gemstone Lore.......2006-09-17

I bought this book because Kunz's work has been the basis for much of what we know about ancient gemstone lore. Kunz's lifelong passion for rocks and gemstones began in childhood and as a gemologist and geologist, he was able to collect and organize vast amounts of gemstone lore. He was also a collector of stones, amulets and magical charms, many of which were donated to the American Museum of Natural History. His enthusiasm for the subject is evident and even though this book is nearly 100 years old, I found it surprisingly easy to read.

    4 out of 5 stars A rare treat.......2005-04-28

After skimming through so many "factual" new age books that were actually full of BS, it was a nice change to read a "fictional" new age book that held so much truth. Is it all true? Impossible, but the humor throughout more than makes up for it. While reading this silly book I actually laughed out loud a few times -- a rare treat indeed! The anonymous author seems to have gleaned his data from books on folklore, mythology, and quantum physics as well as a number of occult "classics". I noticed some similarities to "string theory" here. Especially interesting was his analysis of the differing type of entities encountered throughout occult literature. He presented a startling hypothesis clearly and logically. He seems to be expanding beyond the groundbreaking works of Jacques Vallee and Loren Coleman. It might not be entirely accurate, but it made sense to me. Another reviewer said this book advocated drug use? I didn't see that at all. The author said that the occassional use of cannabis could enhance certain types of trances, but that came after a lengthy rant about how drug abusers were "idiots" and a long list of "shamanistic" plants that he said you should never try because they're toxic and dangerous. He said that LSD is a "poison", salvia is "over-rated", and peyote is nearly extinct and shouldn't be harvested. Does that sound like a drug fiend to you? He hides behind his anonymity to bash other new age authors -- by name -- which wasn't very nice. He also expounds on several unpopular conspiracy theories, which was a little disturbing. He probably is a fairly unpleasant person to meet, as he sure doesn't seem to care about making enemies! His book did make me laugh though. Well done, "Scribe27", your silly book has given me much to think about!

    2 out of 5 stars Polovgan 351.......2005-03-30

I have just finished reading Arcane Lore by Scribe 27. There is little that I need to say that Scribe 27 did not say himself. He has never been initiated into any serious [or other] occult group and recommends drugs, drugs and drugs. The title word "Lore" meaning teaching handed down is actually quite true. It's rather like getting instruction from an uneducated self experimental "high IQ" ego driven individual.

Anyway, it was a fun read, there were no aspects of practical advice though, oh yeah, plenty of slander to all the others that are dumbass idiots, but after reading page after page of text, that's all I received, and a few laughs. But ... if ever you are looking for a quote book, this is it, in fact one whole chapter is made up entirely of quote after quote with one final paragraph written by the author.

The book states emphatically that it is fiction, perhaps I should have taken the hint?

Good one, I hope you sell a bunch Scribe 27, that's what Black Magic is all about! It was very humorous fiction though

    4 out of 5 stars Catch-All Grimoire.......2004-12-26

There is an unfortunate trend in the occult community to nit-pick a book to death. Some books are academic enough to stand up to such scrutiny, though as a result are dry and boring to read. Even texts for chaos magick, which was once a breath of fresh air, are now borish and verbose. Arcane Lore is not one of those. This book is meant to be a comprehensive text on magick and the occult, though is presented with such pinache as to read like a comic book. Arcane Lore is the worn and oil stained mechanic's guide to the automobile that is occult reality. More a compilation of notes, experiences, and humor than a structured document. It is irreverant, funny, and functional. The only reason I am giving this a 4 of 5 is that a large portion of the book is a compilation of quotations from other authors, not as much original content as the page count suggests.

    4 out of 5 stars Oh, wow . . . this was strange!.......2003-12-18

If Jack Nicholson, Sonny Barger, and the Dali Lama decided to stay up all night eating funny mushrooms and typing their ideas about the Black Arts into a laptop computer, you might wind up with something that rivals the rare tone of this weird book.

The author intersperses his colorful digressions with a large numbers of selected quotes from a surprising number of sources. I found it all quite amusing, and am now reading it for the second time. He certainly has a *unique* perspective!

While several extraordinary ideas are eludidated in detail -- and which are well worth reading -- I remain skeptical of certain statements made herein, and was put off a bit by the wildly fluctuating tone, which seemed to vary between manic and condescending. It was funny though, and that appeared to be the author's intent. Depending on your particular mindset, you'll either laugh out loud or else be up all night cowering under the covers with all the lights on. It was a good book -- just don't take it too seriously.

    5 out of 5 stars SPOOKY STUFF. . ........2003-10-29

This was a good book, and surprisingly quick to read (I finished it in 2 nights). It made me nervous. First, I started to think that the author must be insane . . . then, I began to worry that maybe I was insane, because what he was saying started to make sense! Intuitively, I've suspected some of these things for quite some time. He talks a lot about how a number of unseen influences can affect people, and describes how someone who is unaware is defenseless. He also details the many aspects of the dream state, and how to protect yourself from things that would attack you -- whether in a lucid dream or on the astral plane. It's spooky thinking about all the negative and potentially harmful energy out there -- in the physical world, as well as the unseen -- but being aware of it, and being familiar with its nature, makes it less dangerous. A little bit of knowledge is all you need to keep yourself safe, and this book provides it.

    Book Description

Wizards study their academic magics in great halls of learning; sorcerers discover their spells through innate talent; clerics call upon the gods for a share of divine favor. But what of those magic-users who delve into the less well-charted realms of the mystic traditions? What of those who tap into the power of the heavenly spheres, or use the secret essences of the plant or mineral kingdoms to distill potent magical concoctions? Those whose gift lies in drawing spirits or elemental forces to do their bidding, or who can explore the twisting paths of a dreamer's mind? What of those whose very presence tampers with the familiar magic of arcane and divine spellcasters?

All these find their place in Occult Lore.

Occult Lore is the definitive tome of alternate D20 magic systems. This 240-page hardcover tome contains new spells, magic items, creatures, PC and NPC classes, prestige classes, domains, and in-depth rules for ten new magic traditions:

Alchemy allows the Arcane Healer to tend to his patients in the absence of a Cleric, and the Grand Alchemist to pursue the immortality granted by just a drop of pure philosopher's gold.

Astrology places the wisdom of the stars into the hands of mortals; horoscopes can predict a character's future, the most auspicious time to explore a dungeon, or let an Astrologer control the subject of a nativity from afar.

Solar Hierophants embody the sun itself, becoming celestial creatures, while Lunar Mystagogues become the masters of magical secrecy, exerting their dark power over creatures of the earth and underworld.

Elementalism turns the forces of air, earth, fire, and water to the will of the spellcaster, until the Elementalist tranforms herself into one of the elemental creatures she commands!

Geomancy gives magic-users access to the power of ley lines, dowsing, and the innate magic of locations to enhance their mystic abilities -- sometimes beyond their own control -- or even to create fearsome zones of antimagic.

Herbalism is the craft of the Wylderwitch and the Grand Herbalist -- the plants of the field become healing poultices and powders, magical concoctions that can extend or shorten life, or even Verdex that "bind" spells for later use.Occult Lore features Baird's Botanical, an extensive appendix describing twenty mundane and magical plants and the concoctions Herbalists can distill from them.

Magical Imagination gives Heraldic Wanderers the ability to construct fabulous Memory Palaces from shadow and illusion.

Oneiromancy grants access to the dream worlds where id-hounds roam, Lucid Dreamers manipulate dream reality to fit their own deepest desires, and secret knowledge or transient magic items are the treasures of a sleeping mind.

Rational Magic lets science and Logic displace the power of magic. Rationalists strip targets of their spells and special abilities with well-reasoned argument, and even cancel the effects of magical weapons and armor.

Spirit Cultivation is the Gleaner's art of capturing the fleeting remnants of a soul, and slowly teaching it the ways of power. Gleaners nuture these souls first in a cloak of remnants, then transfer them into reliquaries to invoke the skills and spells of the spirit, and finally use focal charms to control spirits with the power of the gods themselves!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent d20 RPG resource!.......2006-03-09

This book while set in the 3.0 version of the d20 system is still an excellent piece of work. It offers new systems of magic for any d20 fantasy setting. I particulary found the section on herbalism to be great. The fact the book gives a selection of plants is also very nice. It also offers interesting features such as Sympathetic magic, Astology, Geomancy, and Alchemy. All in all it does'nt require a lot of work to get updated to the current 3.5 edition of the d20 system. So if you are looking for new systems of magic to include in your game look no further than "Occult Lore"

5 out of 5 stars So Many Demons, So Little Time ~ Dictionaire Infernale.......2006-05-09

I certainly wish this book were still in print, I love this large, coffee table hardback edition with its nicely illustrated and evocative cover to go along with the wonderful title, 'Dictionary of Demons.' Who could resist such a delicious temptation?

I'm happy to say I own a pristine copy of Mr. Gettings book that I keep safely locked away and bring out only for my own personal enjoyment when that dark, infernal mood strikes. There are so few good books out there that deal specifically with the topic of demonology, it's a shame such a good one as this has to be stuck in OOP limbo for so many years.

Despite the incoherent ranting and raving by a previous unidentified reviewer, I found this volume not only highly informative and in-depth but also immensely enjoyable and well-illustrated. Such a concern over a minor error here and there, "Ceylon instead of Cairo", GET OVER IT!! Find a book without errors and I'll show you a wide-eyed Evangelical Protestant holding it (Ha-Ha).

1 out of 5 stars Fails the accuracy test.......2001-09-29

I quote from the 1989 review by G.M. Kelly in "The Newaeon Newsletter, Volume VI, Number 4, September 1989 E.V." ...."'Aiwass The name of a spirit with which the magician Crowley made contact in 1904 while staying
    in Ceylon.'

"You know right off the bat where this dictionary is going - downhill all the way. I will not debate the essence of
the sentence, but I must point out that there is a great geological difference between Ceylon and Cairo, Egypt,
where Crowley first contacted his Holy Guardian Angel or True Self.

"Remember the rule of thumb: if the writer cannot accurately give well known and easily verifiable information,
chances are he is even more inaccurate about the more complex aspects of the subject he is writing upon.

"'(28) EVERY MAN HAS THE RIGHT ... WITH HIM. ...' the book continues in another place,
gives genuine cause for concern. In terms of the esotericism upon which true demonology is based,
the dictum 'Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law' is probably quite correct, yet no one
can afford to ignore the future consequences which follow an indulging in every impulse of will.
Unbridled egotism has always been linked with the ABYSS in hermetic lore. ...'
And Mr. Gettings proved his statement so by impulsively writing this book with unbridled egotism only to fall
into the abyss of ignorance, for it is clearly stated by Aleister Crowley in several places that 'Do what thou wilt'
does not mean do as you please. It is not a licence to satisfy every impulse of the petty ego. Instead it means that
one should discover one's True Will, one's specific purpose for existing, God's Will, and do that, very often
ignoring not future consequences but ignoring instead the impulsive indulgences of the ego for the sake of a better
future for all beings. If Mr. Gettings had actually studied his subject, even lightly, before writing a book on it, he
might have written something truly informative and worth reading. And if Trafalgar Square had a conscience,
this is one book they would allow to go out of print."

Note: It seems that Trafalgar Square Publishing does indeed have a conscience.

    5 out of 5 stars excellent content.......2000-05-01

This book is a magnificant resource book and is more an encyclopedia than a dictionary. Fred Gettings supplies a fantastic introduction that includes information on the content of the book, info. on some influential figures in middle aged to modern occultism, some basic occult principles and history. The dictionary itself includes not only a huge amount of angels, demons and other spiritual creatures/entities but lists other names they are known as, what they may do and what literature they are mentioned in. Also, the dictionary has information on various occult practices such as necromancy, geomancy ect. And info. on leading occult figures and many occult terms. This book serves as not only an excellent resource for the learned occultist but as a book for begginers to learn many occult terms and some history.

        5 out of 5 stars A Great Find!.......2003-12-25

This remarkable little book is chock full of information on the magic, mysticism and religion of the Aztecs and Mayans of classical Mesoamerica. Gathering together archaeology, anthropological surveys and accounts from the Spanish conquistadors, this wonderful little book takes the reader on a merry romp through the cultures of ancient Mexico and occaisonal looks at modern Indian beliefs today. Theres tons of information about gods and demons, magic and witchcraft, shamanism, nagualism, the Aztec and Mayan calendars, astrology, Aztec holy texts, the Popol Vuh and even the philosophies of the region. Spence makes a point throughout the book of drawing comparisons between American and European mythologies, making it even more accessable to readers who may be aware of Greek, Roman and European beliefs but have little familarity with the more exotic traditions of Central America. Of course, some of his assumptions (such as the idea that a European presence must have penetrated Mexico at some point) are completely false and reflect the cultural bigotry of the time. Nonetheless, looking beyond such things this is a wonderful book for the more obscure occult beliefs of the Aztecs and Maya. Or at least a start. I certainly felt that each chapter gave a decent amount of information on the subject and I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in the magic and religion of the Native Americans of Mexico.
