bought this book beacause of macd - ok but nothing more. the rest of the book is more or less useless. For me it sees that he wrote this book because of what he had to say about macd. absoluttly wate of money and time. do you want the best go to a. elder. he si the best.

4 out of 5 stars A good TA "and" trading book for relatively advanced players.......2007-01-11

I am a mechanical trader using primarily trendline, MACD and Stochastics. That explains why I immediately picked this book up when the tagline "Inventor of MACD" on the front cover entered my eyes. Out of expectation, this book had only one (out of ten) chapter on MACD (but I did learn that the author used 6-19 and 19-39 other than 12-26 as parameters). The rest were on volume, moving average, oscillator type TA tools, plus strategies on fund selection and switching, and trading on seasonal+cyclical factors (Chapter 5 which I like the most, that he explained with solid data why the Nov-Jan period, the pre-election year etc are the best time to enter the market). As a trading book, this is relatively compleat and helpful, though I admit I am biased for my respect to the author. In short, recommended, particularly for those with certain trading experience + TA knowledge and want to acquire more for an edge.

p.s. As a VAS to you and a support to my review above, below pleaes find a summary of "Lessons I (the author) have learned during 40 years as a trader" in the last chapter.

- The news media tend to be the last to know and almost always tend to follow stock market trends rather than to lead them.
- There might be many benefits in attending lectures, meetings....but it is probably best to operate alone.
- It is best to keep your results and performance private.
- Human nature operate against good trading practices. Traders often tend to close out their strongest positions too early and maintain their weakest positions for too long.
- The name of the game is to make a good (but not unreasonable) return for your time and capital, not to feel smart.
- Dont confuse rising stock prices with being a financial genius.
- In-and-out trading will not be as profitable as well considered intermediate term trading.
- It is better to miss a profit than to take a loss.
- It is probably best not to operate at the market opening.
- Do not enter into an invested position without an exit plan
- It is much better to trade with no more capital than you can comfortably risk.
- Three consecutive successful trades makes us feel like a genius. That's when they get us.....
- Make note of some losing transactions....The stock market, at best, is a game of probabilities.
- Be free to simply stand aside until matters clarify.

5 out of 5 stars Topics in Technical Analysis.......2006-11-13

In my opinion, the title of this book should be "Topics in Technical Analysis". This book covers some aspects of technical anaysis and each part is very wellwritten. Especially MACD is well covered than any other book in TA. A good source for intermediate and advanced readers.

2 out of 5 stars Venerable But Misleading Advice.......2005-10-02

IMO this book's advice can prove costly.

But why not judge for yourself? For many years the author edited an investment news letter entitled Systems and Forecasts which his son now manages. Check out Hulbert's ranking of investment news letters to see how S&F has done compared to its competitors. Significantly, neither the book nor its jacket mentions the newsletter.

The accolades of othr writers on technical analysis reminds me of Arthur Koestler's old book called The Call-Girls (highly recommended and available through Amazon)about an inbred group of Academics who spend much of their time touting each others work. In this case I believe the homage is a gesture of respect to a technical anayst no longer young.

One among manny objections I have to this book it that it barely mentions that moving average indicators (like the author's MACD)
are meant for trending markets but usually don't work in trading markets- an oversight as easy to make as it can be expensive.

I have traded for over 20 years but strictly as a hobby.

5 out of 5 stars A Cornucopia for the Serious Trader.......2005-08-24

If longevity is a key to greatness, Gerald Appel has achieved it. When I got into the business in the mid-seventies, he was an admired technical analyst. His publication, Systems and Forecast, was required reading. The inventor of MACD, he has lived to see his technique used by virtually every serious investor and trader; it is included in most trading programs.

With Technical Analysis, this accomplished technician and money manager, offers a complete course in forecasting future market behaving using cyclical, trend, momentum and volume signals.

His techniques are suitable for investors of all suits - be they short-, intermediate- or long-term. Even mutual fund investors will benefit.

It is rare that a successful money manager of Appel's stature shares his secrets with the public. If you are a serious investor or trader, you can only benefit from time spent with this master and his ideas.

The natural expression of the angels is Truth. If we deny the truth, we repress the energy of the angels. But when we fully accept the eternal verities of life, the angels go to work to bring everything up to the divine standard....
Within each one of us dwell the twenty-two angels, centers of Living Energy that provide us with all we need to sustain us on our journey through life. They await only our readiness.
However, the angels require our assistance to manifest changes in our lives. They are able to free us from disease and death, loneliness and unfulfillment, lack and limitation only when we free them. And so the author of the bestselling The Angels Within Us has written this book to help us set free the positive vibrations of these inner archetypes and their "nothing-is-impossible" energy.
Through meditations, affirmations, exercises, dialogues with the twenty-two angels, and true stories of the miracles and transformations wrought by them, he helps us liberate the power of the Divine within so that we can:

* Find fulfillment in our relationships
* Surrender to unconditional love
* And much more
Our angels are the very law of our being. This remarkable book helps us to connect and flow with their universal rhythm of wholeness, to become who and what we really are.

5 out of 5 stars One Of THE BEST Angel Books ever written.......2007-03-23

This just may be the greatest 'angel' book ever written. It came to me at a time when I thirsted for information about the 'why's' of life. Why do so-called bad thngs happen to good people? Why do the good die young? Why do little children get cancer if it is "a choice" as new aged philosophies alude to? I read every appropriate book I could get my hands on, and as the proprietor of an angel store I had plenty to get my hands onto. This book, and Price's, Super Beings, are my top two choices from all the hundreds of books I've devoured.

5 out of 5 stars A Splendid Book.......2001-10-26

This book helped me to open myself to healing energies that already are within me.

    Book Description

This book offers an in-depth and up-to-date review of different statistical tools that can be used to analyze and forecast the dynamics of two crucial for every energy company processes—electricity prices and loads. It provides coverage of seasonal decomposition, mean reversion, heavy-tailed distributions, exponential smoothing, spike preprocessing, autoregressive time series including models with exogenous variables and heteroskedastic (GARCH) components, regime-switching models, interval forecasts, jump-diffusion models, derivatives pricing and the market price of risk.

Modeling and Forecasting Electricity Loads and Prices is packaged with a CD containing both the data and detailed examples of implementation of different techniques in Matlab, with additional examples in SAS. A reader can retrace all the intermediate steps of a practical implementation of a model and test his understanding of the method and correctness of the computer code using the same input data.

The book will be of particular interest to the quants employed by the utilities, independent power generators and marketers, energy trading desks of the hedge funds and financial institutions, and the executives attending courses designed to help them to brush up on their technical skills. The text will be also of use to graduate students in electrical engineering, econometrics and finance wanting to get a grip on advanced statistical tools applied in this hot area. In fact, there are sixteen Case Studies in the book making it a self-contained tutorial to electricity load and price modeling and forecasting.

    Book Description

In today's hypercompetitive global marketplace, a company's pricing policy can make or break the bottom line. Yet a surprising number of firms attempt to increase profits without the aid of a carefully and creatively designed pricing strategy. Now, in this long-awaited book, the world's two leading price experts Robert J. Dolan and Hermann Simon take managers beyond conventional thinking to show how their breakthrough system of "power pricing" will improve the bottom line by an order of magnitude. They destroy popular but not necessarily financially savvy ideas on pricing, such as relying on a standard markup on cost rule. They expose as passive the "strategy" of letting the market or a competitor "set the price." But the key is in what they provide: the tools by which the pedestrian pricer can become a "power pricer" who achieves quantum leaps in financial performance by aggressively implementing sophisticated pricing strategies.

Dolan and Simon combine their international expertise and know-how to reveal the latest breakthroughs in pricing tactics. Drawing on their firsthand experience with firms throughout the world, they make available for the first time the logic behind the actual practices of "power pricers" engaged in fierce global competition. Market segmentation, promotional pricing, competitive strategic pricing, international pricing, nonlinear pricing, interrelated product line pricing, and time-customized pricing are just a few of the crucial concepts which the authors explore and explain when and how to implement. The authors' approach to creating "power pricers" is twofold. They specify the practices of the strategic pricers among the world's most successful firms and then lay out a four-dimensional system to attain this level of pricing sophistication and resulting profit improvement. Dolan and Simon draw their portrait of the power pricer in four critical dimensions: viewpoint on pricing, fact file support pricing, tools and scope of analysis, and determination and implementation.

The authors argue that firms must view pricing as a key and highly manageable element in the profit equation, worthy of attention equal to that accorded to sales volume and costs. Companies must have data at their finger tips which are more accurate, timely, relevant, and dissaggregated than their competitors'. Using these data to create a systematic analysis of customers and competitors, companies will be able to create and assess pricing scenarios to achieve long-term profitability.

This targeted, quadrupled approach to transforming the bottom line by managing price leaves no strategy or option unturned. Power Pricing is a highly detailed yet practically focused book which will become required reading for business leaders; general managers; marketing, product, and brand managers; accountants, financial managers, and marketing students, world-wide.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice book to get a nice start.......2007-08-07

I used this book for my job when I was asked to do pricing for a new product. It may not be the best book for that. But it did give me some prespective of what all things I should take into consideration. It helped me prepare a good model which helped compiled thoughts of everyone. I am still working on this pricing excercise and I feel that after a while, I will through away the model, but this books examples, stress on real profit drivers, importance of variable costs helped me concentrate at right drivers in the begninning. I would like to go for better, more practical book with some good mathematical models.

4 out of 5 stars Gaining a strategic understanding of pricing in daily life.......2003-08-01

Why does there exist such a variety of pricing schemes for different products and why do we see different prices for the same product, depending on who buys it when, where, and how? This is a branch of microeconomics called price discrimination. Price discrimination questions are among the most directly observable ones for students, particulary those who are unlikley to study more economics or business. I therefore focus on these questions in teaching managerial economics in an organizational management graduate program.

Dolan's and Simon's book is therefore of some interest to me. These two management consultants have written an extremely practical and non-academic book which explores the actual practice of business pricing with greater sophistication than found in most standard applied micreconomics texts or many business marketing texts. The main markets for this book, I suspect, are students, having graduated but still disatisifed with the overly theoretical approach in their microeconomics classes, and business managers, especially in medium to large companies, for whom pricing is a very dynamic and strategic issue.

I doubt this book is used as a main teaching text, nor would I recommend it. Its basic concepts are hardly novel and are found in any microeconomics or marketing text. The presentation of the basic concept of price elasticity is somewhat long and tedious (it is usually done in less than a page in a standard microeconomics text). However, the application of this concept -and illustrations of how businesses can use it practically - makes for a very rich discussion.

What is useful in their book is the variety of examples of actual business settings where practical pricing decisions have to be made which can apply several different concepts. How globalization affects pricing decisions is given considerable attention in this book. I did not find the final section on implementation of priing strategy in organizations as insightful as the middle chapter which is more analytical.

For teaching and learning purposes, this could be a useful back-up resource, if used judiciously with a more standard text.

    2 out of 5 stars Generalista.......2001-03-18

4 out of 5 stars Very Relevant Material.......2001-02-23

I work in the small appliance business. Price is one of the largest issues facing our industry. Dolan combines textbook economic theory, practical applications and real world examples to spin an enticing web of price application. This is a must read for : former economics majors who wish they had pursued a graduate degree, marketing people who have pricing authority (or wish they did) and sales people. The underlying message is reinforced by example.. price on customer perceived value. A great "pass around" text for co-workers, its not terribly academic, but you must keep with it in the slow chapters.

2 out of 5 stars too specific and at the same time too general.......2000-03-16

Needing literature for my thesis I found this book. Looks promising, but quotes like "global brands coupled with differentiated prices are not possible" immediately dismiss this book as a good source of reliable info. I just have to mention the differing prices of MC Donalds throughout the world, and you know this quote is really worthless. Of course the quote has some meaning for high priced goods, but for almost all fast moving consumer goods this quote is rubbish. I think it would be useful to add to a future version of this book that this remark is more valid for high priced goods.

Second point that I want to make is that the author thinks all producers have factory outlet stores or that distributors don't have a supplier. But this is probably my business administration background asking for a real perspective on prices, instead of just one isolated part. Mr. Dolan please read some distribution channel management literature! There are suppliers and there often is a retail channel that has some power in setting their own prices (especially in EUROPE)It is not clear from what perspective the author is looking.

And last of all, if you write a better version, please change the title, the best thing that I can say about the current title is that it fits the book.

    Book Description

Bolivia has been at the forefront of Latin America's leftward shift. The country's recent history provides a case study of both the ravages of neo-liberal economic policies and the powerful social movements rising up to overturn them. Bolivia's social struggles over the ownership of resources such as water and gas have been as heroic as they are instructive. Conflicts related to International Monetary Fund policies and the war on drugs offer important lessons about corporate globalization and US foreign policy. The election of Evo Morales, Latin America's first indigenous president, as well as his delicate relationship with the social movements on which his administration depends, raises important questions for the future.

The Price of Fire gives a blow-by-blow account of these battles, while also contextualizing them regionally and historically. From the first moments of Spanish colonization to today's headlines, it traces the story of a small nation whose natural resources helped fund the rise of capitalism and that has spent the subsequent four centuries suffering the consequences. A primer on the history of resistance to corporate globalization in Latin America, Benjamin Dangl's far-reaching and penetrating analysis uses Bolivia's story to tell a much larger tale that will only become more important to activists, academics, and general readers who want to understand the latest news.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Price of Fire.......2007-07-21

Things across Latin America look like they've heating up in the last five years to the breaking point. After decades of military rule, right-wing forces, banana republics, and domination by foreign companies, governments in Latin America crushing left-wing movements and people fighting the old orders of extreme wealth and extreme poverty, it really looks like those days are through. Social movements are no longer an isolated thing. From the autonomous movements in Argentina, to the Landless People's Movement in Brazil, to even (to some extent) charismatic left-wing rulers like Hugo Chavez, to the Zapatistas and their supporters in southern Mexico, it looks like from this vantage point in the mid-atlantic region of the United States, that Latin America has some really big things going on right now. Bolivia is no different.

"The Price of Fire" explores struggles and movements in Bolivia, focusing on the last five years. The book's title refers to what many of the struggles there are tied around: the simple price of fire, or gas for heating. Dangl talks about many different issues going on there, and especially issues like the coca trade, access to water after the government privatizes the water and begins billing people for it, and the community mobilization across the country in response. These uprisings are called "wars", like the Water War and the Gas War, for very good reasons.

One interesting aspect is that the coca leaf is used as a symbol of resistance. Coca can be processed into cocaine, but it's also a main ingredient in coca-cola and is used locally as medicine. Because of the US insistence as a part of the "War on Drugs", the government and sometimes US Forces, regularly bomb, destroy, and prosecute coca farmers. Indeed, sometimes the soldiers themselves sent to destroy the crops are chewing coca leaves as they burn coca plants. The military also murders farmers who refuse to plead guilty to drug trafficking. In response, at the city of Chipiriri, the cocaleros formed a coca farmers union, and set up a tightly controlled market to sell their goods, while forbidding any drug dealing or usage at the market.

Two major uprisings, the Water War in Cochabamba of 1999 and the Gas War of 2003, are vividly described in the book. After three years of pressure by the World Bank to either privatize its water or face losses of billions of dollars in loans, the Bolivian government relented and pushed for the water of the nation to be places into corporate hands in 1999. This totally enraged the population of Cochabamba, which has around half a million people and is growing rapidly, after costs skyrocketed, distribution failed, and the poorest were completely cut off from water at all. Road blockades, huge street demonstrations, and occupation of the water company offices forced the government to act, and they made the company public.

On September 19th 2003, the Gas War starts in Cochabamba, and quickly escalates as cocaleros join in huge road blockades, made even more popular by events in Argentina as a form of protest. The issue is on whether to export natural gas to foreign countries when there is a shortage for the very poor in Bolivia. Large popular assemblies gather, and unions, community groups, and other organizations unite around this issue, which eventually brought down the President. An anarcha-feminist group, Mujeres Creando, agitates for the end of patriarchy and women's submission in their center "The Virgin". Neighbors in the neighborhood El Alto also emerge at the head of the mobilization. At the end, a left-wing President, former coca-grower and indigenous Evo Morales is elected, with the understanding that if he does not stand up against International Companies and the World Bank, that he can be forced out of office as well.

This book takes a wide view of the situation in Bolivia, as the author worked as an independent journalist throughout Latin America, writing for a variety of left-wing magazines like Z Magazine, The Nation, and the Progressive. I recommend that if you have read Marina Sitrin's Horizontalism, you read this one right afterwards. The two fit together like a hand in a glove, one focusing on Argentina and one focusing on Bolivia, but seemingly talking about the very same thing: poor people, indigenous people, and women rising up againstcorporations and the rulers of their lands. A lot of theory andanalysis makes you want to jump off a cliff with how depressing it is; books like this and Sitrin's fills you with hope and examples of how
people are organizing and fighting back.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant account of the Bolivian people's heroic struggle for self-determination!.......2007-06-18

For anyone wanting to learn more about the exciting social movements that are rocking Bolivia and transforming the continent, I highly recommend this informative book. Benjamin Dangl has really done an amazing job bringing to life the various struggles of working-class Bolivians to reclaim the basic elements of survival like water, gas, land, and dignified jobs. More than just the triumphant story of the people's movement to elect the indigenous leader Evo Morales, this book is about the popular resistance of Bolivian miners, farm workers, factory workers, and students to the economic and political catastrophes caused by neoliberalism. Internationalist in perspective, this book interlinks the Bolivian revolution with revolutionary movements in Venezuela and Argentina. As someone interested in integrating art and politics, I found the chapter on Bolivian hip hop, street theater, and Mujeres Creando to be especially fascinating and imagine that others involved in, say, building giant street puppets, painting public murals, or writing folk music would enjoy this as well. As the poorest nation in South America, a nation burdened with the tragic history of Operation Condor and the military dictatorship of Hugo Banzer, Bolivia is helping to pave the way for justice, peace, and liberation in Latin America.

5 out of 5 stars A Clear View Out of the Media's Muddled Views About Latin America.......2007-04-18

As a North American, the media, if it reports about Latin America, our southern neighbors, at all, it is usually muddled and simplified. I am always skeptical when all the media is biased in union and regurgitating the same refrains. I always have to make an extensive effort to get even a basic understanding of what is really happening in the "Other Americas".

This book is a clear window. It contextualizes events instead of using a broad stroke for the entire continent. It makes clear and startling connections between what is happening down there and the United States deliberate and active roles in it and in their history and current events.

For anyone curious about the social changes and revolutions happening down there, for anyone desiring an unmuddled view of Latin America and its past events, get this book.

This is from an independent journalist without corporations he needs to please. Definitely recommended. An inspiring, thought provoking read.

5 out of 5 stars Not buying a powerboat, but .......2004-12-04

I brought this book because I thought that I would be buying a powerboat. However after discussions with my wife I am now looking for a big yacht-a really major purchase!
I'm using the same techniques that he recomends in the book though. I'm making an offer as recomended and walking away.
The sellers that I have dealt with have not been angry. They seem to appreciate an honest valuation.
I have not brought yet, but then I don't need to.

5 out of 5 stars New to Boating (A Year Ago).......2004-11-16

I purchased this book a year ago at a point where I knew nothing about powerboats. Reflecting back... this was a really good book in that it explains everything you want to know (and don't want to know) about purchasing a powerboat. There are entire sections dedicated to helping you decide specifically what type of powerboat you may want as well as sections dealing with boat inspections, sea trials, and techniques for purchasing.

The book is well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Quick Read, Fantastic Advice.......2004-09-20

This book is short and easy to read, but contains outstanding advice. It walks you through the process of figuring out what type of boat might work best for you, and then helps you locate and evaluate potential boats. The checklists were great - they helped us be very thorough in looking over boats, and helped us realize when we found a boat that was a great steal. In addition, the author walks you through the negotiating process and gave us tips that saved us hundreds of dollars. He deals with the emotions of the process, which was very helpful as well. We always negotiate on all our purchases, but some of the tips here were new to me and worked extremely well. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone thinking about buying a boat.

3 out of 5 stars No meat to this book.......2003-10-11

While this book is a good overview of buying a boat, it contains no surprises - and I knew nothing about boats before buying it - save reading two magazines.

What did it tell me ?

      - There is approx 30-35% markup on price of a new boat
      - you get a good deal if you get 12-15% of that in negociating.

      What else?
Nothing much but common sense, and repeated info.

An organised person could generate the checklists themselves with or without the help of this book or a couple of boating magazines.

Anyone who has purchased a new or used car would go through the same tactics with the dealer/seller.

What would I reccomend instead ?

I also purchased "The Complete Idiots Guide to Boating and Sailing" which gave me a better (but still reasonably high level) introduction to boats/buying.

What has really impressed me is my latest purchase (reccomended from Amazon Reviews) and that is the so called "Bible of Boating" Chapmans Piloting. It sounds a bit high-brow, but covers everything and anything a novice or experienced person could want to know. It is letter sized hardcover with 650 color pages - well worth thirty five bucks. Buy that and forget wasting thrity bucks on three empty paperbacks.

      Book Description

An admiral is on trial for having defied the President while carrying out the orders of a rebellious Congress; a President is on trial for having failed to act when a crisis threatened his country.

Congressional aide Jim Dillon discovered a little– known provision in the U.S. Constitution, and it plunged the federal government into chaos. Now he struggles to gain control over the extraordinary events his actions precipitated, volunteering for the defence team at the court martial of Admiral Ray Billings, who disregarded a presidential order by leading an assault on foreign terrorists.

Meanwhile, in the South Pacific, a fanatic plans to exploit the weaknesses of an American government in upheaval by brutally shedding American blood and taking innocent citizens hostage. But nothing will prevent a great nation from doing what is right, no matter what the price, not when the honour and the future of America is at stake.

      5 out of 5 stars And I haven't even finished it yet.............2007-01-14

I'm about 2/3 of the way through the book. I've purposely (with great difficulty) decelerated my reading speed as I want to savor the experience. I anxiously but patiently await the outcome of the impeachment trial with the hope that the president resigns, and also look forward to the future relationship of Dillon and Molly. It is incredulously easy to see a movie of this tale and I already envision the actors in the following roles: Lea Thompson as Molly, Rob Morrow as Dillon, and Fred Dalton Thompson as Admiral Billings. I read Balance of Power back when it was new and just found the Price of Power in my collection the other day. Don't know how I missed it over these years but for some reason, I had not read it. The courtroom dialouge is especially spell-binding. Great work Mr. Huston.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing legal thriller!.......2006-03-13

Without spoiling the plot, let me just say that this is one of the best books I have ever read! (And I'm not even done yet.) Basically, it continues the story of Balance of Power by James Huston, but in such a way that you do not need to have read Balance of Power to read this one. It's all about a congressional aide finding a long-forgotten clause in the Constitution that in effect brings up a constitutional crisis, pitting the Legislative Branch against the Executive Branch. All in all, an enthralling read. Romance is interwoven into the plot as well, so it's not just dry legal and military stuff.

      4 out of 5 stars "A Solid Sequel".......2003-02-16

James W. Huston does a terrific job handling the fallout from "The Balance of Power." While the first chapter with the kidnapping of an American corporate exec and his wife is written in a rather choppy style, it improves by leaps and bounds after that. The scenes involving Admiral Billings' court-martial are flat out excellent. Huston presents great arguments on both sides. One moment you think Billings will come out OK, the next it appears he has no chance to win. I do wish the impeachment trial of the President was done better. Those scenes were just not as compelling as the Billings court-martial. Again Congressional aide Jim Dillon is a first rate hero. At times he seems over his head, but that first class mind of his is always working to get out of what appear to be no-win situations. The return of the terrorist who calls himself George Washington is a great monkey in the wrench. He's more ruthless in this book than in "Balance." Even with the two problem areas I mentioned, the book overall is a winner.

4 out of 5 stars "Thrilling Page Turner !".......2002-11-10

Politics, terrorism, and freedom of religion, is the backdrop for this action-packed, page turner by James W. Huston. I enjoyed "The Price of Power" very much. The characters were believable which kept the court room scenes exciting.

2 out of 5 stars Balance of Power, part deux.......2002-02-20

James Huston's second effort, `The Price of Power' is a direct sequel to his `Balance of Power'. Both novels put together can easily be read as one novel and I will hazard a guess that the original draft was just that - a work that was split into two parts.
The terrorist from the first book, "George Washington', survives and kidnaps an American mining executive and his wife. He is quickly killed and his wife is held hostage with the demand for the release of the captured terrorist band from the previous novel. It is unclear in the novel if the reader is supposed to believe that the executive's wife is dead or alive.
The second thread of the novel are two courtroom procedures: the impeachment of the President on the grounds that he is a pacifist and cannot fulfill his duties as President of the United States and the court martial of Admiral Billings who led the original assault on the terrorist island. Still another plot thread is the use of another clause in the Constitution to justify further military action without the authority of the executive to rescue the hostage.
`The Price of Power" is better written than the previous novel because there are fewer dangling plot threads and the main characters behave with greater consistency than in the first book. The author also does a good job with his simple but effective courtroom dialogue sequences which are the true heart of the novel.
However, as in his first novel, the author uses his characters and storyline to present a right-wing interpretation to the Constitution and the roles of the President and Congress. The author misreads the Constitution and expects up to believe in some unlikely scenarios. For example, can you imagine a true pacifist getting through the President primary process? How about a President's mother testifying at an impeachment hearing? Or how about a court martial that judges on the constitutionally of an act and not the UCMJ?
As with his first novel, you need to put your brain on hold for this one, but if you do, you will enjoy this well paced fantasy novel for right-wingers. I intend to read his next novel, "Flash Point' which I hope is more military action than right-wing political fantasy.

3 out of 5 stars Too Much, Too Little.......2007-02-10

This book covers quite a bit of material but not sufficient enough in any area to bring a person to mastery level in Visual C# as it's name implies. The book lacks in three main areas: depth, consistency & challenge. It covers the basics very well for C# console applications but does not cover much of the "visual" aspects of Visual C# as it focuses almost entirely on console applications and the SDK version of the compiler. ie: It shows how to create and use an event for a console application but I had to do a web search for examples how to create and use Windows forms events.
It lacks in consistency where the authors have admittedly shortcutted much of the example code, it is difficult to find an example of well written code in one place. ie: constructors are a vital part of class building but most examples do not show constructors or access properties such as set and get but instead make fields public to save time.
The book also lacks in providing a challenge for the readers. If you are trying to learn to speak a new language you learn faster and better if you talk as well as listen. The book provides alot of poorly written code and does not challenge the reader with problems to solve programmatically.

5 out of 5 stars Very Easy to Understand.......2006-11-02

This book is the best programming book i've ever read. The layout and examples are easy for me to understand. It shows short example followed by explainations why such & such should be then shows the fully coded example. For me, i like that especially the explainations which i did not get to understand from other books. I suppose this book is not for veteran programmer because you can just browse throught the Part1 which i think it's for beginners. Overall, it's 5 star.

4 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best way to jump to C# if you already know a bit programming........2006-07-16

As the title says, this book may be the best way to jump to C# from another language. I knew a lot of VB6, but I found it slow and cumbersome, so I bought this book. This book quickly shows you how C# works. There no stupid humour or blabbering, it gets straight to the point and teaches you C# step by step.

It has extremely many code samples and it's a bit boring to read, but it's the fastest way to learn C#.

      5 out of 5 stars The best all-around C# book!!!.......2006-03-23

As mentioned in the title of my review, this book is without a doubt the best general instruction (how-to) and reference book on Visual C# .NET that I have found anywhere. The topics are very clearly explained, the code snippets are concise enough that you aren't wading through a single project that grows as the chapters progress.

Instead, the author begins with an into to C#, and starts with the basics. I am only half-way through the book and have been very pleased with the content, its presentation, and the manner in which the author communicates.

      4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-01-15

Overall, I'd say this a great book for learning C#. Prior to reading the book I had knowledge of C++ fundamentals. For the most part, I didn't have any issues digesting most of the material in the book. Although, I will say that I didn't catch on to Mike Gunderloy's writing style quiete easily. I could tell something was different in the quality of the writing later on in the book and then realized (from the examples) it was Mike's writing. Maybe cause his topics were a bit more advanced. Knowing more now, I look back at it all and say its a good book to learn from scratch and a useful reference later on.

      Book Description

What do phone rates, frequent flyer programs, and railroad tariffs all have in common? They are all examples of nonlinear pricing. Pricing is nonlinear when it is not strictly proportional to the quantity purchased. The Electric Power Research Institute has commissioned Robert Wilson to review the various facets of nonlinear pricing. The work starts with a general non-mathematical discussion, followed by a more technical presentation intended for readers with a fairly advanced background. Thorough and detailed, this study has ample examples of case studies from a variety of industries.

      1 out of 5 stars Whoa, Einstein-dude!.......2002-10-25

This is the worst business book I have ever read. The connection between his hypothesis on pricing and his discourse on science and mathematics is lacking or at best weak. This is truly voodoo-finance at its worst.

      5 out of 5 stars Handy compendium.......2001-01-21

This is the most detailed monography on nonlinear pricing that one can get nowadays. Written by one of the most active and innovative theorist the book is filled with the masterly blend of both applications and theoretical models. Accessible to anyone who has a solid grasp on the fundamentals of microeconomic theory. It was written in the beginning of the 90s and since then significant research has been done - including the mechanism design aspect of nonlinear pricing theory. Thus a new, revised edition would be welcome both for researchers and students.

This is really the best and thorough book on the subject. The only wish I could have is the too light and concise treatment of nonlinear pricing in noncompetitive markets that are far from both extrema of monopoly and perfect competition. Nevertheless, an excellent read.

      3 out of 5 stars Nonlinear Pricing.......2000-05-01

This is a good book that gives an overview of how to a company can maximize its products/services by establishing a multiple pricing structure for identical products based on what customers they are targetting.
