Book Description
Team Challenges promotes effective communication skills and teamwork. Designed to offer teachers, facilitators, and parents a wide variety of activities to cultivate children's problem-solving skills while fostering cooperation between group members, the activities in the book utilize common household items and recycled materials, and require no more than 10 minutes, start to finish. Presented with a challenge from this book, kids work cooperatively to solve open ended problems which can incorporate structure building, improvisation skills and physical tasks. The challenges will teach children to experiment with building methods, discover new uses for everyday items, try on new personas, and express themselves as they work together toward a successful solution. Team members are required to think outside the box, communicate clearly, and cooperate with each other in order to complete each task.
Activities include building structures from materials such as index cards, drinking straws, paper clips and sticky dots; moving items from one location to another without directly touching them; or presenting a skit portraying their solution to a hypothetical dilemma. Children will learn not only from each other, but also from observing how other teams navigate each task.
Pass some creative problem solving skills on to the kids (and adults!) in your life with the fun activities you'll find in Team Challenges. Adults who work with children will find this to be a great addition to their repertoire.
Ever found yourself with five extra minutes to spare, but nothing to discuss in that short amount of time? Turn to Chapter Five, and you'll find questions such as these:
*Name things that you carry on your back (a backpack, a baby, a monkey)
*Name things that you take out (garbage, Chinese food, an opponent)
*List things that are printed (newspapers, the alphabet, T-shirts)
Need a simple activity to occupy the kids and encourage them to work cooperatively? Challenge them to one of the Tiny Tasks, found in Chapter Four:
*Build a structure as tall as possible using 5 marshmallows and 10 drinking straws
*Create a bridge that will span 18" using 3 sticky notes and 10 cotton balls
*Create a continuous line as long as possible using 1 envelope and 5 recycled bottle caps
More detailed challenges are found in subsequent chapters.

fun team challenges.......2007-08-14
I am a Destination Imagination team manager who is looking forward to getting my kids working on these team challenges. There are a variety of challenges in this book that are easy to prepare and set up for but they look fun, interesting and challenging. They are sure to make my kids brains work! Book contains good tips too!
A wide variety of great ideas. .......2006-12-16
This book offers all kinds of great activities that will help foster cooperation, communication and creativity within whatever group of people you're using it for. The tasks range from mental activities to physical ones and are easy to understand, fun to execute and can be completed with objects that you usually have around the house. The book is a great tool for your own children, birthday parties, classrooms and it's also a perfect teacher gift!
3 activities with 1001 variations.......2006-11-23
Essentially, this is a book for people with little-to-no experience with group games or team building. All of the activities listed were ones I already knew, and the large number in the title comes from the number of variations for each of 3 activities: building things out of everyday items (see how high you can build a tower with the given items), common physical challenges (get the group from one side of the room to another using various props), and improv/word games. If you have a small imagination and very limited knowlegde of common team building activities, you might like this book, but if you're already in the field and looking for a book of new ideas, keep on looking. This isn't it.
From the Creativity Editor at BellaOnline.com.......2006-05-11
Team Challenges is a resource book packed with ideas and activities for encouraging and developing children?s creativity, lateral thinking, and communication skills.
It's easy to see how these challenges could help to develop a child's confidence as well as exposing children to career and skill development options. Solutions are not necessarily guaranteed and children can be encouraged to continue thinking a problem through when the time is up and to present further ideas later, or even try the task again.
The challenges in this book emphasise creative and imaginative thinking and I'm very impressed with the author's ideas.
Must have! Wish I'd had it years ago!.......2005-12-21
We're a homeschooling family, and have started using this book in our co-op. It's so amazing to watch the idea of "team" unfold as we go along. This book is fantastic, so well organized and well written, and full of so many different ideas, you're bound to find something unique that works for every personality. We've participated in Oddessey of the Mind in the past, and I think this book should be on every group leader's book shelf. If you like helping kids and adults learn to work together, this book will take you to new levels of cooperation, and will likely teach you more about yourself than you ever thought possible.

Idea generator for parties, play dates and birthdays.......2005-05-14
I was looking for books that would help with active games for my daughter's summer birthday party when I ran across this book. In contrast to many other books which are organized by party theme (dog, princess, superhero, etc.), this book is helpful because it is organized first by age and then by type of activity. The age ranges are preschool (2-5), school age (6-9) and preteen (10-12). The activities are grouped by traditional games, contemporary games, group activities, outings and events (which are closer to the theme parties you get in other books) and entertainers. Each game identifies not just the target range, but how far you can stretch to encompass older kids, the number of players needed, game objective and what materials to have on hand. It also gives ideas for creative ways to modify the game to fit children's disparate interests or different settings, prizes, favors, and trouble-shooting tips. We host our children's birthday parties at home (in contrast to many families, which use other locations such as gymnastics centers, pottery facilities, etc.) so I am always looking for activities both to keep kids active, but also to calm them down at the right time. This book offered ideas for both. All in all, a very helpful book not just for the upcoming birthday party, but also for future play dates and field trips with my kids.
Kids Party Games and Activities........2001-06-23
This book was arranged in 3 age groups. Tha's really helpful, so you can zoom in on your child's party and find just the right activities. Each section includes lots of traditional games as well as innovative ones and other party activities, like face painting. Also included are trip parties and theme parties for each age group.
Each game or activity includes creative suggestions for adapting the game, ideas for prizes and troubleshooting common problems ahead of time. The game directions are complete and easy to follow.
This book will offer ideas for many parties to come. The games may be dropped into your theme. The theme parties offered here are easy and fun and offer the inspiration to add your own ideas.
A wonderful book for ideas and themes!.......1999-11-11
I think I may just like the ideas from this author, because I liked another one of her books. This book will help you with games, invitations, tips, etc. I think it's a good book to keep around and pass around. I was stuck with no ideas and it lifted alot of stress from my party planning.

Customer Reviews:
Not worth the price........2006-02-28
This book has no ideas that I didn't already find on free sites on the internet. What a disappointment. Ultimate Birthday Party, My Aunt Fanny!!!Save your money.
Not so creative..........2005-07-28
The themes are creative as well as the decorations (except for the home made piñata which is a little too fake) but the games are really very much the same ones in each of the different parties. You can just read the first one and nearly know the rest. I think they wasted a lot of paper to tell us the same things all over again in each party.
I highly recommend this book.......2005-06-24
Everything in the book is well organized, there are many different themes, each themed party includes creative tips and fun ativities on everything--from decorations to cakes to party favors.
gets the ideas flowing.......2004-03-23
This book provides lots of idea for kids' birthday parties - themes, activities, decorations, cakes, etc. On first glance, I thought it was exactly what I wanted, and indeed, it is a help. But the problem with the book is that with very many of the activities, the children get some sort of prize - a piece of candy, a little toy, etc. And then comes the cake, soda, and goody bag on top of that. I was looking for a book that offered activities which are done for their won sake and not for the reward (also because it costs money to buy all these things). Some of these activities, of course, can be done without the prize at the end. But for many of them, the prize plays a central role, like in the activity involving a lollipop tree.
throw a great kid's party.......2003-03-06
This book is an excellent resource for parents seeking help with children's birthday parties. It is filled with lots of terrific ideas for putting it all together, including: invitations, activities, cake decorations and favors all tied in to appropriate children's themes. A perfect way to make your birthday girl/boy feel really special.

A really well organized, useful book.......2003-10-31
This book is organized by age, and then by theme -- as an early childhood educator, her observations on what a one, two, three, four or five year old will like and put up with are absolutely right on! Wish I'd had this book to plan my childs first three birthday parties. She has great age appropriate activities, as well as organizing checklists.
The Best Book on Children's Parties.......2000-09-07
The President of our Mother's Club recommended this book and it is wonderful! The author, Sharon Krull, speaks at Mother's Clubs throughout Northern California and is an incredibly dynamic speaker.

Customer Reviews:
Imaginative Endeavor.......2007-09-20
After seeing this author on tv, I purchased this book. While the costumes are very imaginative, I would embelish them a little more. Some of them appear sloppy & cumbersome (like the racecar), but after all, it is "glue and go!"
Easy, fun costumes to make.......2007-01-12
This book was purchased foa a student teacher who is constantly being chalanged to be creative with her early elementary students. It has proved to be easy to use, full of unique ideas and best of all,CHEAP; for the young teacher on a very limited budget.
Just Great.......2004-12-14
Our family has known Ms. Cleeland for many years, in fact she dressed our son in her costumes and he always won first place. You will so enjoy all her ideas, but most of all you will find her costumes simple to make. You will have bunches of fun making the costumes but most of all your kids will love wearing them
This book is Great!.......2004-06-04
My little boy loved this book and is looking forward to building the racing boat this halloween.
There are enough good costume designs that I think we'll be able to use it for years.
Most of the instructions look easy enough to follow, with only a few minor exceptions.
I don't have a girl, but some of the little girl costumes were the cutest.
Anyways, I think this book is perfect for anyone with a kid that is 5-13 years old and is interested in making their own costumes for Halloween.

Book Description
Holidays, birthdays -- whatever the reason you decide to whoop it up, there's a palooza for it!
John Lithgow -- star of stage, screen, and television and bestselling children's book author -- has spent years perfecting the art of the palooza. A palooza is an invitation to a creative adventure, a jumping-off point for making your own fun. All twelve months of the year are loaded with opportunities to palooza. Sure, you can celebrate all the familiar holidays and birthdays the way you always have. Or you can turn those days -- and every other day -- into something special: a real wingding of a palooza!
This book is packed with fifty-two of John's easy and original celebrations for kids ages three through twelve. Each palooza costs little to nothing, and if you learn a little about art or music or food or philosophy along the way, hey, who's complaining! So turn off the TV, roll up your sleeves, and dive into:
Beatlemania: Plunge into the exuberance and musical genius of the Beatles and have a party no one will ever forget.
Opening Day: The first day of the baseball season signals a new beginning and the chance for a family of fans to invent a new tradition.
National Bubble Day: Yes, it really is on January 8, but you can stage this party any day of the year.
Tilting at Windmills: Make like the madcap adventurer Don Quixote on Miguel de Cervantes's birthday.
Lithgow Party Paloozas! shows us how to make holidays unique and birthdays original -- and how to party with a palooza every day of the year.
Customer Reviews:
hilarious fun for kids.......2005-06-01
Do you want your kids to have fun? Of course. Do you want them to learn and grow and explore their worlds imaginatively? Certainly. But can they do both at the same time? If you don't think so, think again: this book is full of ideas that will both entertain your kids and encourage them to think creatively. Lithgow lays out crazy party plans that will definitely be a first in the neighborhood. If you're tired of the same old slumber party and birthday cake, this book is the answer.

Is there such a thing as too much birthday? Poor Sister is overwhelmed by her big, noisy sixth-birthday party. Her sympathetic parents help her realize the true importance of having a birthday in this humorous exercise in moderation for cubs--and parents.
Customer Reviews:
Too Much Birthday.......2007-06-10
Why would little kids play "spin the bottle" kissing game at a kid party? Th rest of the book is good except for that part. We now have our own edited version. The Arthur birthday book also plays "spin the bottle". This might have been thought of as an innocent game way back when but it is not in today's society. Maybe they will edit this book for future publications...
kind of disappointing.......2005-12-28
as a kid birthday parties were the most exciting thing in the world. So when I got this book I had already been collecting a bunch of berenstein bear books but this one didn't turn out as I expected. Sure I enjoyed reading about how special birthdays are but I was too young to understand why she started crying in the middle of cutting the cake. I would have liked it if they had a part where she's opening all her presents, that to me was the most fascinating thing at that age and I'm sure many kids would have agreed with me.
Berenstain Bears Too Much Birthday.......2003-03-02
Imagine my surprise, while reading this to my 5-year-old, to see that Sister Bear, who is turning six, plays "Spin the Bottle" at her birthday party. This is entirely inappropriate for that age level. Avoid this book!
Lesson for children & parents.......2000-05-03
A lesson of modesty which is very well described! Children and parents will learn that big, sensational birthday party does not necessarily ends up with happiness!

I love it!.......2004-04-10
It was a really good book. I could read it 10000000 times and still not predict the next page. It was so much fun to read, and it shows that human nature hasn't changed at all since then. I'm a big fan of the show and I loved reading and watching it!
Justice For All.......2004-03-28
This book is one of the greatest! (Along with the second one in the series) If you've ever seen the PBSkids show, (I watch it every day!), you'll love these books! They help you understand the shows a lot better.
In this book, it contains the first three episodes of the series.
Ok, heres the summary part. Its kinda weird, because on the site they say James is 14 and Sarah is 15, on here they say they are BOTH 15. Oh well, I prefer them both being 15.Ok, here it goes:
15 year old Sarah Phillips is a green-eyed redheaded tall pretty daughter of a Major for the King. Meaning she is loyal to the crown. But her father left England to scout new lands in the Ohio Territorys. (...).
Intolerable Acts-In this episode, the four are staying at Phillis Wheatleys home, hiding from the British redcoats. But the Quartering Act is passed, and soldiers are staying at Ms. Wheatleys home! Sarah is confused at how Phillis is somebodys property, its an outrage! James and Henri find a way to get the word out that the Intolerable Acts were passed, but not without putting them all in grave danger. A danger that only SARAH could free them from, but she has to choose. Lie to a commanding officer in the King's Navy and save her friends, or rat them out and have them all sent to jail? (...)
The third episode thingy, I forgot the title-Sarah and Henri head for Boston to deliver supplies and meet up with Abigail Adams. James stays in Philadelphia to report on the continental congress thingy. But to him, theres an EVEN BIGGER story going on! After the three witnessed a merchant sailor get tarred and feathered after doing nothing wrong, James thinks of it as a patriotic and humorous act, one that he wants to report on. Will he learn his lesson? And will Sarah and Henri get the supplies to their destination safely?
Fun way to learn!.......2004-01-30
Wow! A book that is fun for kids to read and educational. My 10 year old son really liked this book. It has sparked his interest in the history of our country. I will definately be buying more in this series.
My 5yr son is LOVING this book..........2003-11-14
This is a great read-aloud chapter book for those kids ready to hear more than they can read. The text flows smooothly so reading it aloud is easy. No he said, she said text commonly found in easier chapter books.
My son loves the series on TV but we don't always get to see it and a lot of the story line is missed so this is helping to fill in the gaps. And while I agree, it is 21st century characters, it still does bring history to life especially for the younger grades. I think the grade level of 5-8 is high. I think that age group would be bored with this. Although the writing is at that level which is making it enjoyable for me to read.
I highly recommend it as a read aloud with grades K-3. It is a great introduction to the American Revolution filled with enough action and suspense to keep my 5yr asking for one more chapter please???

Book Description
While out for a walk with her mom, a little girl has the surprise of her life -- she meets a real, live, fire-breathing dragon! Now this dragon is nothing to be afraid of -- in fact, he's so friendly that she invites him home for tea. But their afternoon snack is suddenly interrupted when the dragon sneezes and sets the table ablaze. Luckily, the girl knows just what to do, and she teaches her new friend to be fire smart, too. With its funny, rhyming verse and spunky illustrations, No Dragons for Tea shows kids that learning about fire safety doesn't have to be scary. The story ends with "The Dragon's Fire Safety Rhyme" -- a fun and easy way to remember what to do in case of fire.

Excellent Book.......2007-02-15
I bought this is as a bifthday gift for my daughter. She was having a tea party. I really liked that this was a cute story with fun illustrations as well as imparted a little bit about fire safety, a much needed topic of discussion now that my children are getting old enough.
Excellent Story - Excellent Teaching Aide for Fire Safety.......2006-12-21
I have been a professional fire fighter for more than twenty years. I thoroughly enjoy reading this book to my kids and to school children whenever I have the chance. The book covers important fire safety topics but folds the safety curriculum into a wonderful story. I have read this story aloud a hundred times and it has always been a wonderful experience. -- If I could, I would place a copy of this book into every young child's classroom.
Important fire safety for small children.......2005-10-04
This book provides important fire safety messages in a way that is not frightening to small chidren. And the storybook format makes it more likely that the messages will be reinforced by the parent or family member reading to their child. Several important fire safety rules are included; don't hide in the burning building, get low and crawl to safety, get out of a burning building quickly, meet at the agreed-upon meeting place, call 911, don't go back into the burning building, etc. A delightful and important book for young children.
All parents should read this to their children!.......2004-07-05
My 4 year old LOVES this book!
I had only talked briefly about fire safety until this book. It's written in a cute rhyming style, and it's easy to make it into a song or make it into a catchy tune while reading. We made it like a song. This really drew my child into the story, and even myself. I was so engrossed in it that I almost choked when I caught a glance of my child's wide-eyed horror look when we got to the climax part about the house catching on fire and needing to just get out leaving everything (toys) inside. I never stopped reading, and at the end, my child had tear filled eyes and just buried her head in my lap. We both cried, and then talked about the book and read it again. There is a cute summation poem at the end, that hits on the major point again that there's 'just one you' and doing what you need to do to keep yourself safe if there's a fire.
This book lead us to a wonderful discussion about fire safety. Stressing the person is more important than what's in the house, getting out safe, having a meeting place, etc. My child has a hard time thinking of leaving her toys behind if the house were to catch on fire. I think it's wonderful how the books stresses the importance of the individual..."because there's just one you."
We checked this out from our local library, and it's one we'll be buying to add to our own! Now, if this same writer/illustrator had one about strangers....
