Book Description
The Witching Hours
Samhain: 10/31, or Halloween -- traditionally a time to reflect, a time of divination, and a time to honor the ancients. But Phoebe's plans to communicate with her ancestors are cut short when she's recruited to help reunite a star-crossed, magical couple.
Yule: 12/22, or the winter solstice, and the longest night of the year. And when Paige enters an all-night party at a local club, she finds herself at the center of an evil plot to bring about permanent midnight.
Imbolc: 2/1, a time when the earliest hopes for spring are fostered and seeds are planted for dreams of the coming summer months. But Piper can't look toward the future -- and having children with Leo -- when her half-whitelighter, half-witch sister's powers are on the fritz. Is a hybrid baby destined for doom?
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic Book!!!.......2005-12-01
Charmed is a great TV show and I love the fact that each sister has their own unique story in this book! Although I love Charmed and I am a huge fan of all the sister's, my favorite one is Piper, played by Holly Marie Combs. To me Charmed is not just a show about how three sisters fight demons and warlocks everyday, I watch Charmed because in a very big way, they are just like us, and that is exactly what this book implies. Piper wants to have children and have a normal life with Leo, but with a sister's power's gone awry and with the fact that they are indeed the Charmed Ones, Piper feels like maybe having a baby might make things more difficult. Pheobe and Paige's stories were also very good, I enjoyed the whole book very much and I would definately say that if u love Charmed as much as I do, to go ahead and buy this book, it is well worth the money!!!!
seasons of the witch vol.1 charmed.......2004-08-23
this book really is cool. There are three stories in this book one story for each Halliwel sister. The stories isnt long but all the stories ore episodes together is as long as one ordenery charmed pocket book.I enjoyed this book so much couse i could pick out one story that i liked best and read it in a couple of hours.Phoebes story is about that her body is been taken over by another person who wants to free a demon from a love spell.Piper story is about that she is afreid that her baby (not yet born) whould have problems beeing half witch half whitelighter since paige is orbing around town uncontrolled.paige story is about she tired of all deamon ass kicking and goes on a party that is more demonic than she thought...great book
7th Grade Reader.......2004-06-26
I am a very huge fan of this show so I was absolutly interested in this book. The individual stories for each sister was great. I enjoyed each section. With each section I became more engrossed with this book. Please, the writers of this book, make a 2nd volume for us to buy!! Anyways, this book was great, if you like the show, you'll love this book, if you don't know the show, you'll STILL love it!!!
seasons of paige?.......2004-06-03
this is a good book but it focuses mainly on paige not the other sisters, espiecally in piper's story. as a big charmed fan i noticed that in the early paige books they tended to focus on paige there but i thought that was just so that they could establish her character after the lost of prue. but now it seems that she a bigger focus in all the books even though she's now been in more books than the character prue. i think the writers should share out the characters roles more evenly.
this is a good book though in the fact that in infuses a bit of every day practiced wicca into it when it focuses on certain rituals preformed at certain times of the years.
overall it's a good book but not if you've had enough of paige
Nice printing.......2004-04-28
The best thing about this book is the appearance. It's got cool cover and nice printing. It uses better quality paper (whiter - very friendly to the eyes). Larger than usual Charmed books. The first and second story are good but the last one is a bit boring. If you're a Charmed fans, buy it anyway. It's good addition to your collection.

Suprised.......2007-04-05
I was suprised that this was a vegan/vegetarian cookbook. After that wore off, I liked the book. I like books that I don't have to actually cook to enjoy. I was able to curl up with a glass of wine and read this without ever have to turn on the oven. I tagged some recipes to try later and have found the ones that have been made to be good. I am looking forward to making some more of them.
Great book, a delcious read with a cup of tea,.......2006-12-26
I loved this book! The recipes were beautiful and tasty but more importantly (to me at least) its a cookbook I could curl up with and read without even turning on the oven. Enjoyable and relaxing!!
Somewhat Disappointed.......2006-10-20
I've had this book on my Wish List for a while and finally recieved it. While I have not yet read it cover to cover, I did look at all the recipes and this is when my disappointment set in.
I was not expecting a vegetarian/vegan cookbook. Nowhere in the book's description does it states that the recipes are vegetarian or vegan. The recipes in the book, however, do sound good and I plan to try them out, but perhaps Cait Johnson or Destiny Books should label their books accordingly in the future. Kitchen Witches do not have to be vegetarian or vegan.
Good recipes seasoned with fun...........2005-09-30
If you are like me and looking for ways to eat veggies without being obvious, you will enjoy some of Cait Johnson's ideas for soups, salads and breads.
The big plus is that most of Cait's recipes are fairly healthful. Take the Cailleach or Kale-Leek Soup. Made without cream or butter, it includes olive oil and two veggies that are good for you.
Arranged seasonally, Johnson't book begins with Autumn (Mabon and Samhain fare) and continues through the witch's year to the festivities in mid-Spring when Johnson offers the reader-cook a lovely Miso soup and Salad Nests that are good for you and don't taste too bad (if you like sprouts, it will help).
I'm not much of a summer cook, but Titania's Cherry Soup made with honey, yogurt and Maple syrup finally allows me to make something other than muffins with my spring cherries. The Midsummer salad helps me make use of the various excess from the stock of hot peppers I grow every year for my parrots and my son-in-law. One of my favorite soups, however, is the Tomato-Venus soup around the feast of Lugh which I prefer to the cherry soup, which seems truly weird to me. Or, there's Juno's Summer Quiche if you can bear to turn on the oven.
In addition to following the Wheel of the Year and it's holidays as an organizing principle for her text, Johnson includes a little mystical background information about each of the various celebrations along with a list of supplies and other-worldly information.
Way Too Much Time On Hands.......2005-03-20
Cait appears to have a lot of time on her hands so she decided to write a book. LOL

Blessed be ^^ ^^.......2007-02-09
This planner is, by far, the best I've seen. I've been purchasing the Seasons of the Witch planner for the past 3 years and am extremely happy with this edition. Last year's was a big disappointment; there was just too much unnecessary information and it was unappealing to me. The 2007 version contains a beautiful hardcover, sturdy spiral binding, colorful layout and great tarot information. I highly recomend this one; you will not be disappointed!
Wonderful.......2006-11-10
This is my annual purchase of a planner. I take it everywhere. Gives you all the information you need to incorporate magic & tarot into your daily life. Plenty of space to write. Well worth the money!

Season of the Witch tells the story of Gabriel Blackstone: hacker, information thief, and skilled remote viewer. Asked by a former lover to investigate the disappearance of her stepson, Gabriel's suspicions fall on Minnaloushe and Morrighan Monk, two beautiful sisters who live in a rambling Victorian house in London. Independently wealthy, the sisters spend their time dabbling in alchemy and the ancient Art of Memoryinvented by the Greeks and used by alchemists and magi such as Giordano Bruno and Leonardo Da Vinci. The sisters are white, or solar, witches, who aim to use alchemy not to turn lead into gold but to attain ultimate knowledge and therefore ultimate power. Gabriel soon becomes convinced that his client's son had been murdered and that one of the women is the killer. But which one?
As Gabriel infiltrates the world of the sisters, he finds himself drawn inexorably deeper becoming entranced even as he realizes that he is in mortal danger. When he is caught snooping, Gabriel must race to unlock their secrets before they can retaliate. To save himself and the one he loves, presuming she is not guiltyGabriel will have to fight one of the sisters within the landscape of her own mind.

Great Concept but- Highly Diluted Characters and Story Line.......2007-09-30
The back cover mentions Anne Rice, however, it is far from, "The Witching Hour, by Anne Rice." The stories on the Mayfair Witches.
I love anything to do with alchemy, magic, gothic; and so I thought I would love this book. Because of this, I knew from the get-go, who the "villain" would be.
I agree with other reviewers, the characters and story line although interesting could've given us so much more. There are very few characters in the book and the author didn't do much to build the characters there are, so in the end, we really don't know much about them. There was no falling in love with any of the characters (except maybe Isodore). This book is no page turner.
I highly recommend reading, "The Witching Hour, by Anne Rice." You'll love the Mayfair Witches and their stories. A book you will want to read again and again. The Witching Hour (Lives of the Mayfair Witches), The Anne Rice Value Collection: Lasher, The Witching Hour, Taltos (Anne Rice)
A Great Paranormal Novel.......2007-09-01
Natasha Mostert's Season of the Witch is one of the best books I've read in quite a while. I obsessively turned the pages fearful of what might come next but desperately needing to know. I was almost as obsessed as Gabriel Blackstone in his hunger to taste again the cosmic illumination he felt, only once, in a trip into the memory palace, a most dangerous and fascinating place...
Enter a World of Beauty and Darkness.......2007-08-22
Enter a world of beauty and darkness... I was intrigued by the beautiful cover image and the enigmatic tag line of Natasha Mostert's novel, Season of the Witch, when it arrived in my mailbox for review. That is, until I turned the book over. It wasn't the completion of the tag line: Two sisters. A mysterious house. And a man searching for the truth. That sounded positively gothic, a niche of fiction I thoroughly enjoy. It was quotes like, "A mesmerizing blend of alchemy and sexuality. Prepare to be seduced." and phrases like "fraught with eroticism" and "dangerous sex" that brought forth mental images of a witchy ménage a trios that put me off the idea of diving right into this book. Strange, inner jacket comparisons with The Matrix, Interview with a Vampire, and The Historian did not evoke much confidence that this would be a book that I would ultimately enjoy despite liking all those things.
Having just spent the last several hours hanging on every word of the last 200 pages of Season of the Witch, I have never been more happy to say, "Boy, was I ever wrong!" The old adage of "don't judge a book by its cover", or more accurately, "its cover blurbs", held very true for my experience with Natasha Mostert's gripping novel.
From the book jacket:
Gabriel Blackstone is a hacker, information thief, and skilled "remote viewer"-he makes an excellent living stealing other people's secrets. When a former lover asks him to look into the disappearance of her stepson, Gabriel's investigations lead him to Monk House, a rambing Victorian home where time seems to stand still. Gabriel becomes increasingly bewitched by the house, and by its owners...
Contrary to what the jacket blurbs would lead one to believe, this is not some sort of occultish erotic thriller. Oh it is a thriller all right, make no mistake, but the melodramatic overtones of "eroticism" and "sexuality" belie the fact that this is a straight up gothic thriller, set in modern times. Having had the experience I have just had with Season of the Witch, I can confirm that in one way the jacket blurbs got it right: "Prepare to be seduced" is a perfectly accurate warning, though possibly not in the way the sentiment was intended.
It is obvious from my opening quotes that I was trepidatious going into this book. It didn't take long before I came to realize that what I had in my hands was much better than any initial expectations. I began reading in small doses, fitting in a few pages here and there as I had time over the weekend. Those few pages turned into larger doses and soon I was just that, seduced. Mostert's writing, the way she pulls the reader in as Gabriel is slowly lured into the lives of the two mysterious M women, is artful in its seduction. And once you are woven into her web of words, there is no getting out. I hit a point early this evening, right around the halfway point of the novel, in which I realized that any activity I had planned for the night was due to be rescheduled. I was going to spend the remainder of my night with Gabriel.
Season of the Witch is a story about memory, it is a story filled with interesting symbolism. It is a story of romance and redemption, it is a tale of magic. The story builds up the tension so slowly, so deftly, that before you know it you find yourself in passages of the book that give you the same kind of nervous anxiety that you get when watching a suspense film, where the killer is sneaking up on the unsuspecting victim. You want to scream, "Look out behind you!" but instead you tear through the pages with a racing heart and hope for the best.
I was utterly captivated by this book. Natasha Mostert manages to lend a truly timeless feel to the scenes in Monk House that make you feel as if part of what you are reading is classic gothic fiction. Added to that is a great deal of historical reference to the practice of alchemy and to a number of real life practitioners that give the novel more depth than a standard thriller. I was so intrigued by the mention of one individual that I had to put the book down to visit the great info-dump of cyberspace, Wikipedia, to read more about said individual before I could continue with the story. Scattered throughout the story are diary entries by one of the mysterious M women that bestow an air of secrecy and apprehension. To top it all off Mostert writes intriguing characters that feel three dimensional.
It doesn't happen often enough that I get so engrossed in a book that I have to stay up until the wee hours to finish it. Season of the Witch just happened to inspire a literary late night.
There is so much more to be said about this book, but perhaps the best thing I can say is this: Go out and buy it now. Allow it to slowly but surely tantalize you with its marvelous language and thrilling story. Forget any preconceptions the cover blurbs or inset jacket description may conjure up in your mind. It is not that these descriptions lack accuracy, it is that this book is so much more than that. Enter a world of beauty and darkness... it is well worth the price of admission.
Expected more.............2007-07-23
An OK read - fast-paced, interesting premise - but it should have been much, much better. Great subject matter - but the author glossed over just about all of it. It was the 'name dropper' approach to a deep subject, as if she could mention the names of historical figures and the reader could then go to the Internet to figure out what made those figures tick.
The main character, Gideon Blackstone, was shallow and self-centered, and, even tho the main character admitted that about himself, I couldn't warm up to him.
Jacket notes compares this to The Historian. Boy, is that wrong. The book's treatment of what should have been a fascinating subject, strike that, many fascinating subjects, was as shallow as the main character. Actually, more shallow.
Jacket also compares this to Interview w/The Vampire. Uh, no. Lestat is selfish, arrogant, tortured.....and ultimately very, very human. Gideon Blackstone is just a jerk in a book.
Disappointing.
Beautiful, Mysterious, Elegant and Amazing. WOW........2007-07-22
I think my title probably says it all (lol), but I'll add a bit more. I just finished this book last night and it has been years since I've fallen so hard for a book. I was in love with it, entranced by it, and unable to stop thinking about it, which includes this whole morning ever since I woke up. I loved the original plot lines, the pre-Raphaelite sort of beauty that the sisters had, and the descriptions were just delicious. I literally have never read anything like this book, and I can't tell you how thrilling that is. I read so much that it's easy to become jaded and think that everything is the same, nothing new is under the sun, etc. etc. But this author surprised me and it made my day---if not my whole year! :)
Sometimes when I do a little review like this I try to talk about certain parts of the story that might hook people's interest. This time, there are so many that I can't choose just one, so I'll just say this...if you are the least bit intrigued by the cover, the title, or the description, BUY this book. You won't be disappointed!

FALL APART
Summer's over. Kerry, Josh, Brandy, Scott, and Rebecca have left their California share and returned to school. Once, there was nothing better than the freedom and energy rush of college. But in the wake of such a life-altering summer, campus life leaves the friends feeling restless -- and bored.
Kerry, for one, barely leaves her dorm room. She keeps reading Daniel's journals over and over, searching for a clue to solve the mystery that is Season Howe. But answers aren't to be found -- until the evil witch is finally spotted in Las Vegas.
The five friends trek to the city of sin, rallying to fight Season. She destroyed something important to them, and they all seek revenge. Unfortunately the season won't end without her taking something else: a life even more precious than the first....
Customer Reviews:
Hello, Mother Blessing.......2006-02-15
Kerry has been devastated by her losses in the first book. She is trying to concentrate on her classes but is unable to. Her friends from the summer are not doing much better. Kerry then decides to take off and search for Daniel's mother. Clues in his journals make Kerry think this is possible. Her goal is to learn magic so she can defeat Season.
Kerry does succeed in finding Mother Blessing although the woman is not what she expects. But after some time Kerry does begin her lessons in witchcraft. There is much about magic that Kerry did not understand but her quest to destroy Season motivates her every moment. Lessons and testing continue until Kerry is forced into a greater test than she had been expecting.
Kerry is developing nicely in this volume and it ends with a bit of a cliff hanger that makes the reader want to move right into the next volume. The reader becomes much more familiar with how magic works in these stories. There is also quite a bit of development of Kerry's friends. If you were wondering if some of them were sleeping together, this volume answers some of those questions.
Something Wicked This Way Comes.......2005-01-05
Summer has ended, and 17-year-old Kerry Profitt, along with her summer friends Brandy, Scott, Rebecca, and Josh, have headed away from San Diego, and off to their respective colleges where they hope to further their education. Unfortunately, the horror from the summer has left it's mark in the brain of each young person, making learning a challenge. The five teens will never forget what they saw over the summer, as Daniel Blessing, a witch, was brutally murdered by another witch named Season. Now Season occupies all of their thoughts, and they are imagining that she's everywhere. Until she finally shows up in the city of sin known as Las Vegas. Soon the five friends are reuniting, but to something savage and brutal that scares them to death, and sends them running for home. Except for Kerry. Kerry heads out to the Great Dismal to learn witchcraft from Mother Blessing. After all, there's no use in running from Season, so she'd better learn how to fight.
Jeff Mariotte is a fabulous author, who held his own when he was writing for the BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER series, but with the WITCH SEASON series, he stands in a class of his own. Mariotte's character development is fabulous, as is his portrayal of a group of teenagers all with their own personalities and quirks. Readers, both male and female, will be able to find a character whose personality matches theirs. Fans of teen paranormal books, or teen fiction in general will be pleased by this fabulous new series.

Are there really witches among us?.......2004-11-13
<P>
Kerry, Josh, Brandy, Scott, and Rebecca have left the quaint resort on the coast of California. A life-altering summer in which they spent most of their time in pursuit of an evil witch named Season Howe. Ultimately ending in Daniel Blessing's death, Kerry's boyfriend.
Almost a hermit, Kerry barely leaves her Northwestern University dorm room. Instead she sits day after day pouring over Daniel's journals. Kerry's hope is to unearth even the smallest detail that will aid in some chance of exposing the enigma of a ruthless killer.
Finding her efforts fruitless, Kerry decides to find Mother Blessing the only link left to Daniel Again she pours over the journals piecing a map together, a route that will lead her into the Great Dismal Swamp.
Meanwhile her friends have grown restless after receiving a cryptic email from Kerry- and discovering that Season Howe has been spotted in "Sin City." Striking a nerve, the five friends embark on a pilgrimage to Las Vegas--the city of dreams, gathering, to duel the evil witch. Their cause has several reasons: Making her pay for what she did to Daniel and making sure she never makes it to the Witches' Convocation.
Although after a grueling match of wits Kerry learns Mother Blessing is hiding something. Something she feels even Daniel was unaware of....
If you don't believe in witches, this series will surely help change your mind!
Characters from previous books appear lending a feeling of continuity for long time readers and will keep you gripping your seat until the very last page is read. Fall (Witch Season) is entertaining and well done; unique in that it is both a book and a series. Mariotte's style is deceivingly fresh. Definitely a scary novel for teenagers, yet one that anyone would enjoy, and could make a nice gift for young and old fantasy fans alike.

Seasons of the Witch: Poetry and Songs to the Goddess by Patricia Monaghan is a classic of the feminist spiritual genre. First published in 1992 through Delphi Press, the readings and poetry of Seasons has been used for teaching, ritual, ceremony and many other purposes by a host of Dianic leaders including Jade River, co-founder of the Re-formed Congregation of the Goddess, and Ruth Barrett, co-founder of the Temple of Diana. Patricias interweaving of nature motifs and Goddess imagery speaks to the yearning hearts of spiritual women. Her poetry never fails to elicit emotion, be it joy, longing, or even sorrow. Her multifaceted writings are wise, insightful, and best of all, fun, mixing lustiness with an acceptance and embracing of the entire cycle of life. As a resource of readings about nature and Goddess, this collection stands alone. This third edition adds a wonderful double CD set of Patricias poems set to beautiful music by Arctic Siren. In addition, there is artwork by Goddesswoman Sid Reger, a new introduction by the author, and a thematic table of contents that permits the reader to quickly find the perfect poem for any occasion.

Beautiful and moving.......2003-08-17
This is an absolute treasure of a book. The title is a little misleading though. This book is not just for witches but for goddess loving folk everywhere. It's poetry, not an instructional manual for witchcraft or even "how to find the goddess." Although it's not a manual, it certainly helps the reader to connect with the goddess on an emotional, instinctual level. Almost every poem pulls me right at my very core. I feel a deep inner understanding of what the author is saying, and through her written experience of the goddess, I touch Her too. Wonderful, transcendent poetry.
The CD is very good too. It's well-produced, and the music meshes well with the poems. I haven't done so yet, but I think it would be excellent music to use in ritual.
Beautiful, rich poetry and songs.......2002-11-25
I bought this book/CD two months ago, and I still haven't tired of listening to the CD and reading the poetry on a regular basis. Monaghan is a very talented poet; She conveys images and emotions so well through her words! It's really wonderful... some of the best poetry I've ever read. The songs on the CD are also beautiful. They are Patricia's poems set to music that was written and performed by each artist, so the instrumental and vocal styles are often quite varied (in a good way). One of the vocalists is Patricia's sister, Peggy Monaghan, and some of the others include Lili McGovern, Claudia Blythe, Sally Coombs, and Kirsten Baird Gustafson. All of these singers and musicians are very talented, but I am lukewarm on a couple of the songs because I personally don't like the singer's vocal style and she sounds a tad flat to my ears throughout the song. Despite that, the CD is currently one of my favorites to listen to on a regular basis. Just a few of my personal favorite songs/poems include Peggy's version of "Maenad in Spring," and "Maeve Prepares for Beltane," "The Maenad Remembers Dionysus," and "Procedure for Reclaiming the Self," but all of the poems and songs are really special. I highly recommend this book/CD set to anyone who enjoys Goddess-based poetry and music.
A dream, a rush, a treasure.......2002-09-19
Patricia Monaghan, probably my favorite Goddess-spirituality author ever, does it again with _Seasons of the Witch_. ... Monaghan's emotional and moving poetry is wonderful. You can just read it for enjoyment, or use it in ritual. It includes "general" poems about witchcraft, a lot of Greek- and Celtic- inspired material, a few poems dealing with other myths, and a dash of fairy-tale material. All of it is very good. (One thing that makes Monaghan stand out in her field, by the way, is her refusal to bash males. Other goddess authors ignore or demean men, but many of Monaghan's poems celebrate love for men in a sensual and lyrical way.)
There is also a gorgeous accompanying CD, featuring several performers who have set selected poems to music. You'll want to hang on to this, too, either just to listen to for pleasure, or to play during ritual.
I would talk more specifically about the poems, but I can't do them justice in prose. I wish Amazon had a "see inside" feature on this book, so you could browse the first few poems and see if you like Monaghan's style.
I also must commend cover artist Gavin Duffy. For a moment, I thought Monaghan had switched publishers! Note to Llewellyn: More covers like this, please! In fact, more books like these--both in appearance and in content. This is a rare gem.
Inspirational rather than instructional.......2002-06-03
When we raise our voices to praise the Goddess, we find our voice sometimes in poetry, or sometimes in prose and most often in song.
This book is a collection of some of Patricia Monaghan's work. The book is divided into seasons, and each season is created in our minds in beautiful poetry and visualized prose. We are lead around the seasons, shown the associations of the elements, the Wheel of Life, and the different forms of the Goddess.
Ms. Monaghan is a talented and very well known poet. Her works have appeared in many magazines.
This book also contains a CD which has placed 25 of her poems into song. The poetry becomes devotional songs, and we find ourselves delicately woven into the visualizations by the enchanting voices of Peggy Monaghan, Sally Coombs, Susan La Croiz, Claudia Blythe, Kirsten Baird Gustafson and Lili McGovern. James Robbins also appears on one of the tracks.
As you read, and listen, you are drawn in by the delicate imagery Ms. Monaghan uses. Ever present is her love for the Goddess, her understanding of the elements and we feel her love and warmth in each piece.
This is a nice break from the handbooks and instructional manuals that dominate the market. Personal expression rather than personal opinion is always a nice change. The CD is professionally produced, the book is nicely bound, and the quality of the material makes this an outstanding package and a nice presentation.
This is a book that can be appreciated by anyone with a soul for poetry or devotional prose. It would make a wonderful gift and a lovely addition to your library.
Sometimes we need to step back from the "how to" books and remember "why".
Poetry that makes you feel alive.......2000-07-27
This isn't the dry, highbrow stuff forced down your throat in high school. This is juicy, magical, alive and exciting. There is romance, myth, anger, fear and wonder.
I've performed these poems to great effect, and had many people ask where they could get the book. I've heard it's coming back in print and that's tremendously exciting.
Patricia Monaghan has written numerous books on Goddesses and myth, including the brilliant "O, Mother Sun," and has another poetry collection, "Winterburning."
Customer Reviews:
Another book that deserves wider readership.......2002-11-30
Gail Griffin's book should have been published to greater fanfare. I suspect the major publishers were nervous (if indeed they saw this book at all) because, as another reviewer said, the book is difficult to categorize. A book of essays? Sounds dreary.
Yet Seasons is one of the liveliest, most insightful career books available. As a career coach, I frequently cite Gail's story of being asked to cover for a project-botching colleague. The man was paid a stipend but everyone knew he would do a bad job -- so the administration asked Gail to give up her summer research quarter (for which she was not paid) and do the job -- for no compensation of course!
As a former college professor myself, I can relate to Gail's stories of second-class treatment in academia. She triumphed and became a department head -- but the frustrations never go away completely. Male colleagues interrupt her office hours and her classes. I've had similar experiences.
Some of the best essays in the book deal with Gail's classroom experiences as she teaches literature to undergraduates. In fact, I think she would do better to put together a collection of those experiences and sell them as a book. Her discussion of The Color Purple and her analysis of a Rita Snow poem are worth the price of the book. She makes literature come alive and we see why she is such a gifted teacher.
If you can get a copy of this book, send it to anyone who's entering academia, especially women. And if you like literature and want to share Gail's exuberance, that's another reason to track down this book and buy it.
White pages aren't blank pages.......2000-11-16
Gail's book is one of those that I would never want to place in a single category. It's a perfect blend of memoir, storytelling, commentary, and literary criticism. A good part of the work focuses on growing up white and female, and the challenges that come when someone of this background teaches literature by African Americans. She confronts many aspects of the collective history to which she belongs that are often unacknowledged or set aside. As a professor of literature, she seems to examine her own life, culture, and history as if it were one of her classroom texts - carefully, thoughtfully, and fully aware of the many opposing and contrasting views one could hold. I left the experience of reading this book feeling that I knew more about literature, my culture, and myself. There is much more within this book than a simple memoir, cultural commentary, or literary critique would offer - it's too beautiful and complex to belong in one of these categories.

Book Description
Kerry has seen the error of her trusting ways. Turning to someone for help turned out to be a complete mistake. So now she is back on her own -- mulling over the same issues, stuck with the same baggage: Find the witch named Season. Avenge Daniel's death. Decipher the ancient witch stories.
The difference is that this time Kerry is armed. For starters, she's picked up more than a few tricks of the witchy trade herself. To boot, she's got the knowledge that everything is definitely not as it once seemed. So even if her quest gets blown off track, Kerry is prepped.
The trick to navigating her topsy-turvy path is figuring out who she can trust. As Glinda once astutely asked, "Are you a good witch, or a bad witch?" This winter, that's the million-dollar question.

On The Road Again.......2006-02-15
After the second book Kerry has decided to strike out on her own. She is still dedicated to destroying Season and one of her friends has spotted her at a ski resort. Kerry races to the confrontation while the rest of her friends also try to join in the hunt.
But Kerry's life is anything but simple. Her lessons with Mother Blessing and a confrontation with Season serve to bring up more questions that can only be answered by Season. Kerry decides she needs the answers before she can finish her quest to destroy Season and avenge Daniel.
Some wonderful twists in this one. More development of Kerry's friends as well. Another cliff hanger at the end (glad I already have the last book). I really can't figure out just how this is going to end but things are moving fast. Check it out.

Customer Reviews:
Convocation is Coming.......2006-02-15
Winter is ending and Convocation is coming. Kerry and Season hide out on the West Coast while Kerry undergoes more training. But Mother Blessing knows that her time is running out before Convocation and steps up the attack.
Kerry and friends are still not safe from the witch feud they became involved with the previous Summer. True peril and death continue to factor into the story. Finally Convocation occurs and we have the final showdown where Season and Mother Blessing get to give their sides of the story.
A good ending to the series. Kerry could go on with other adventures should the author decide to do so. I was glad to see that things did not fall apart at the end. The Author kept up the suspense and danger right until the end. Fans of the first three books will not be disappointed in this volume. It delivers.
