Parting with the critics.......2006-03-19
I must part with the critics. I enjoyed this one tremendously. Great fun. Recommended.
A brief comment.......2005-12-04
This book by well known and long-time Mensa member Marvin Grosswirth complements the several books that Dr. Abby Salny has put out. There's enough variety in the types of questions to keep just about anybody entertained, although a few of the questions I'm not used to seeing on the older, more traditional IQ tests. Supposedly almost a quarter of a million people have bought the various Mensa Quiz books, which is interesting, because Mensa's membership (I being one) has been gradually declining for a couple of decades. Overall a good book of puzzles, brain teasers and IQ questions to keep those mental muscles in tune, which is important--one of the most important things brain scientists have learned over the last several decades is that the brain is very much like a muscle--either you use it or lose it.
Surely the answer is 5.5.......2005-08-16
The question asks "How many horses did the owner SELL", not how many did he get rid of.
Assuming (although not stated) that he ended up with no horses left:
To the first purchaser, he SOLD 3.5 and GAVE AWAY 0.5.
To the second, he SOLD 1.5 and GAVE AWAY 0.5.
To the third, he SOLD 0.5 and GAVE AWAY 0.5.
So the total number of horses he SOLD is 3.5 + 1.5 + 0.5 = 5.5
THE ANSWER IS 7.......2005-05-12
The orginal question that was posted should have indicated that there were no horses left at the end of the day. Without that qualifier, there can be no definitive answer.
If the Merchant has 7 horses when he sees his FIRST customer, then sells half (3.5) and adds half a horse (0.5), then he has sold to the first customer 4 horses, leaving him with 3 horses.
Then, the Merchant goes to his SECOND customer, and sells half his horses (1.5) and adds half a horse (0.5) then he has sold to the SECOND customer 2 horses, leaving him with 1 horse.
Finally, the Merchant goes to his THIRD and FINAL customer, and sells half of his horses (0.5) and adds a half a horse (0.5), so that the Merchant has sold to the THIRD and FINAL customer 1 horse, leaving the Merchant with ZERO horses.
Three transactions, selling half his total plus 0.5, ending the series in zero.
The total number of horses is 7.
The answer is "3".......2004-12-18
If you only turn two transactions, the answer is three, not 7. I didn't read the book, so I do not know how the question was asked, but the way the poster wrote it only shows two transactions, and therefore the answer is 3 Horses.
**of 3 horses
One half = 1.5 plus a half = 2 (one horse remaining). Half of that horse plus a half equals 1 horse. So 3 horses in total.

An old favorite--Mensa Math & Logic Puzzles--gets a brand-new look: it's now in color!
And the puzzles are fantastic: they're the kind of challenge found at the World Puzzle Championships, and they require no language to solve. For example, you are given a grid of dots that has some numbers (0, 1, 2, or 3) in them. You need to connect the dots in one continuous path so that each number is surrounded by that many lines. So a "3" means that three of the four sides around it must be connected. All the puzzles are similar abstract exercises, and all have unique solutions that can be reached using pure logic. They're difficult--and really satisfying exercise for your brain.

Too short!.......2006-06-23
This book is a workout for the mind. It covers many logic puzzle types, and by the time you're done with a set, you feel like you've mastered a new skill. I wish they'd put one of these out every year!
Book Description
Give your brain a workout on the type of brainteasers that challenge the best solvers at the World Puzzle Championships. They're tough, but fun, and the feeling of satisfaction you get when you succeed is simply unbeatable. Some of the puzzles are oldies but goodies, like battleships--and its many variants--where you search for a fleet hidden within a grid. In "Eminent Domain," try to determine which blanks cells are owned by the numbered ones. For "Hex Loops," locate a path that travels through adjacent hexagons: the trick is, it has to end where it started, and the lines can't touch or cross. From Snaky Tiles to Spiral Galaxies, these Mensa-level conundrums will get your mind in shape.

A great workout!.......2007-08-14
A great book for those of you who are preparing for a puzzle competition and are looking for an exercise book (as I was when I bought this one). Despite it is only 96 pages, it has a great variety of puzzles, mostly contest types.
There are around 10 to 20 puzzles of each type, and these are:
- Alternate corners
- Battleships (classic, crowded, hexagonal, minesweeper, numerical, ocean view, semicircular)
- Corral
- Deja Vu
- Dominoes (domino hunt)
- Eminent domain
- End View (like ABCD)
- Fences (including big field fences and pentomino fences)
- Hex Loops
- Lighthouses
- Minesweeper
- Number place
- Nurikabe
- Oxtails
- Clouds
- Skyscrapers (only the 'number of buildings' type)
- Snaky tiles
- Spiral galaxies
- Spokes
- Square Roots
- Tents
The level of difficulty is pretty good, at least for the puzzles I tried.
The only drawback is that most of the puzzles are too small, especially the Fences. I've seen books where the puzzles on the answer pages are bigger than these ones. It's not like they are so small that makes it impossible to work them out, but still pretty small. What I'm doing on other books and will on that one too is to scan the puzzles, cut the white spaces and print them back again on larger sheets. This way you are not ruining your book when drawing and erasing and you can print (and solve) certain pages as many times as you like.
Highly recommended.
Best Puzzle Book I've Ever Worked!.......2007-02-10
If you love puzzles, this book is a **must have**! This is hands down the best puzzle book I have ever worked. There is a wide variety of puzzles and they are all unique, not your standard logic problems. Prepare to be challenged, these puzzles are definitely for the puzzle solver at heart! What a great mental workout!

Nice!.......2007-01-11
This is a great book, though it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. There are some errors in the book (usually typographical) but other than that this is a great way to occupy your time and boost your logic skills.
What a Blast!!!.......2006-06-11
We did these puzzles with our two older children. What a blast! I would have liked a little more variety, but the puzzles provided a good challenge. This book is worth the money.
cool.......2005-10-24
This was a fun collection for a short while, but too many of the puzzles were based on the same theme and it became boring. Otherwise, it was a welcomed challenge.
Great fun .......2005-08-29
Enjoy logic puzzles written with a comic edge. They increase in difficulty as the book goes along, but none are impossible. Recommended for anyone who enjoys doing logic puzzles.
Nice one Mensa!.......2003-12-13
I found this on Mensa's best books list and so ordered it through this site. It only took a few days and since it arrived I have very much enjoyed working my way through the puzzles. They're solvable but some of them still need a bit of thought. And looking at the ones at the end (which I've yet to reach), some of those jobs around the house are gonna have to wait a while!

Brainiacs on the prowl for challenging fun will find everything they're looking for in these cunning conundrums. Puzzle master Terry Stickels has created a mind-melting collection filled with hundreds of diverse and fiendishly tricky problems--including wordplay, math, analytic reasoning, logic, visual dilemmas, and code breaking. Figure out the next number in a series, find hidden phrases, and determine what a three-dimensional object would look like from two-dimensional drawings. Every puzzle provides a workout that strengthens mental muscles. And while these brainteasers do require concentration, they don't demand any special training or high-level math skills. A little practice, patience, and imagination are all it takes.

Excellent Book for people that enjoy puzzles........2001-06-18
Anyone that likes a challenge or enjoys puzzles will love this book. It's a lot of fun. I had the good fortune to be one of the puzzle testers for the book, and I thoroughly enjoyed doing it.
Book Description
This book will train for both accuracy and speed in navigating common types of questions on a standardized psychometric test, developing strategies for the most challenging logic problems, and making the most of natural intelligence.
Customer Reviews:
Iým embarrassed for MENSA.......2004-04-05
The book needed better proofreading, Seriously, what test has duplicate questions (from memory, it was test 3 questions 3 and 7 are identical)? I specifically looked up this website to write this review and I was comforted by the fact someone else beat me to it. Other answers are just plain wrong. You would think, these people are obliviously smarter than me, I must be wrong! But know the answers given in the back contradict the problems (cant work the problem backwards). I suggest someone at MENSA should attempt to work through potential books with their names on it before having the books published. The title is misleading, mostly the back is just an answer key, I rarely seen more than a 2 word explaination of a problem. The book How To Excel At IQ Tests does not help you do anything of the sort. How are you to excel without explaination of answers or even tips?
Not for preparing Mensa IQ test.......2003-03-11
I had almost passed the Mensa test in the past, and I wanted to learn tricks for becoming faster and finally pass it. But this book is bad for me, the title is misleading. Here it's mostly about numerical and verbal problems, while the real Mensa test contains neither (questions are instead mostly like "which picture completes the serie?").
It might be helpful for preparing other tests, though.
