Keep it with you.......2006-11-10
This is a handy booklet to keep in your flyfishing equipment. The leader info is excellent though I found the diapgrams to tie a few of the noes a little confusing. My major beef isthat it is described as a "streamside guide" it should then come with a waterproof case or something to protect the pages. I use a small ziplock bag to keep mine dry
For my wife.......2006-03-23
Last summer i introduced my wife to fly fishing. I decided she needed a guide to knots. I chose this one. She is using it. but i found myself consulting it from time to time so i got myself one as well.
Not waterproof!!!!!.......2006-02-21
I bought this booklet because it was small and could bring it along. Unfortunately, it is not waterproof. I dropped it in the parking lot during a rainstorm and ruined it. It is not a STREAMSIDE GUIDE as the title leads you to believe.

Nice Book.......2007-05-12
This book is sturdy and will last many years. This book has good illustrations and has really helped me to learn several knots easily.
Your Knot Reference.......2007-04-12
This guide to knots makes a great reference book for scoutmasters or anyone needing to know more about knots. This also makes great recreational material.
A great book .......2007-02-20
This is one great book both to own and to give to someone just because you want to.
Easy to follow instructions and some great knots to show off your skill. I keep it on the coffee table for all to see.
Is anyone bored? Tie a knot...
Fantastic desktop reference.......2007-01-13
This is such a fun book.
With my son camping with scouts, I wanted to know more about knots. I read a friend's copy of the previous edition and decided it was perfect. Now the latest edition sits on my desk at work with several lengths of small rope for practicing the knots.
The expanded edition change is important. The latest edition has more knots and information.
The turtle-back with the cover flaps that let me mark my spot in the book is a perfect format for campers. I would not hesitate to take this on a campout.
The author does a very good job of explaining, with words and pictures, the steps to tie the knots, but there are still some areas where more explanation would help.
I started in the working knots and have endeavored into the decorative sennits and braids. I am still having fun learning a little at a time.
A Minor Correction to James Dees's Review.......2006-08-07
I wanted to let potential readers know that Dawson's book DOES include the Taut-line Hitch, though you might have to know a bit about knots going in to realize it. The Taut-line Hitch is simply the Rolling Hitch (page 82 in Dawson), with the rope turned back and tied around its own standing end rather than around a pole as Dawson shows it. Dawson probably could have made that clearer, but it is there.
It's true that it doesn't include the Trucker's Hitch. It probably should in the next edition. Dawson does include the Waggoner's Hitch (page 90), which is a slightly inferior but still serviceable knot that performs the same function as the Trucker's Hitch: allowing a line to be quickly tightened to hold a load.
Even given this minor room for improvement, I think this is one of the best books of its kind ever written. The illustrations are exceptionally clear, the selection of knots is almost ideal, the book itself is small enough to easily pack with you, and its binding is unusually tough and durable for use in the field.
I think Ashley's Book of Knots is THE knot book, still unequalled after over 60 years. Yet Ashley's book is so huge and comprehensive that in some ways it is less useful than smaller books such as Dawson's. Buy Ashley for reference, by all means. But buy Dawson's book for everday use.
Book Description
Knots are needed to tie up parcels and hitch a horse, and for camping, fishing, climbing, and sailing. Featuring easy-to-follow guides to over 100 knots, each illustrated with specially commissioned photographs, Knots teaches everything from the basics to more unfamiliar knots. Each section looks at specialty equipment and their related knots and gives a glossary of terms with pointers on how best to tie each one. Over 700 color illustrations are included.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding little book!.......2007-09-27
This is a great reference for anyone doing beginner to intermediate knot tying in a wide range of fields. I bought it for nautical reference and teaching on a training vessel, but it covers climbing and other fields with equal aplomb. It's not a comprehensive reference, but it's VERY thorough for any practical use, and it covers some background, tools and theory as well. Great book. Small size (meaning small print... but easy to take with you). Very clean and clear images. Well worth adding to your library.
Most knots are clear and concise, but there are errors.......2007-05-26
Pg. 116 - Jug or Bottle Sling
Instructions are to "...take the bottom of the front loop and weave it through the crossings of the other two side loops." However the illustration shows the line passing under, not over the second crossing. This coupled with poorly worded directions in general made it very difficult to accurately recreate this knot. After several attempts however I was able to discern exactly what the author was defining as "Loop A" and "Loop B" in spite of the poorly labeled diagram.
In general this is a great book, but errors like this should have been rectified by a proof reading and the diagrams on some of the more complex knots could be better labeled. Placing an "A" at the top of a picture with no arrow to discern which loop is being referenced and labels no where near the intended loop they are meant to describe make for frustrating attempts the first few times you are trying to learn a new knot.
Still, I would recommend this book as a reference. For the most part it is well done. I would have ranked it higher but the mistakes in the diagrams lead me to give this a 3/5. Hopefully they revise the drawings in later editions to save other folks some frustration when learning the jug sling.
Superb book !!!!.......2007-03-08
Exceptional clarity and completness. Highly recommended if you are interested in knots or "How to make a rope into a tool"
Clear and concise.......2003-10-13
I've looked at a lot of knot books from people like Ashley, Budworth, and Pawson. This is easily one of the best! It's very user-friendly, with clear instructions and good drawings. Most of the knots are practical so it isn't cluttered with esoteric fancy knots that do nothing. My only caveat is a bit more could be said about pros and cons of various knots.

This manual is great!!.......2007-10-02
This is a great starter to intermediate knot tying manual. 'Ultimate' might be stretching it but it's close. Definitely adequate! You would 'the man' if you mastered every knot in this manual! The envy of every other deckhand for sure! ciao, Scott
Yup, This is the Ultimate Knot Guide.......2006-12-26

Fisherman's Ultimate Knot Guide is a great little guide worth the money takes up very little room and keeps the rust out when it's been awhile since you tied those knots.
The Ultimate!.......2004-07-17
I'm sold on this waterproof plastic card concept. Great knot illustrations, too. Amazon.com also sells this author's ROPE KNOTS printed on plastic cards - just do a search for PROKNOT and you'll get 14 essential rope knots on a 6 page waterproof plastic fan pack. I keep both on my boat but could just as well use the PROKNOT cards for camping or tying stuff on the car. These cards rock!

Customer Reviews:
Good Book.......2007-05-13
This is a good book, although it doesn't have nice illustrations it has very good information.
Nice knotting book.......2007-04-25
I bought this because of the instructions for the Monkey Fist knot. I saw these little buttons on sale in Liberty's of London some years ago and they were so pretty that I've wanted to learn them ever since but didn't know what they were called.
The book itself is a basic guide for decorative knots and it does require some time and patience to work out what some the diagrams represent and then what you're supposed to do as you tighten the knots. I spent a whole evening for example struggling with the eight turn bloodknot before realising that you twist it round itself as you pull it up until there is one twist for every turn in the knot. The diagrams were perfectly correct, the problem was the end user not knowing what would happen as the knot was tightened.
That said, the drawings are reasonably clear although you should as with any craft study them with care, but I wouldn't have said this was a book for the complete beginner. There are no colour photographs or pictures of finished knotwork to serve as inspiration, and the diagrams are all black and white line drawings. The book however is a good size for carrying around so that you can practise the knots on the move. It's softback and serves as a good introduction though you will probably soon start looking for more detailed material.
Not helpful.......2003-06-26
This book is way to simplified - It doesn't have step-by-step pictures for knotting some difficult knots (3 pictures just won't do it for beginners like me).
Utterly worthless.......2003-05-11
There were many knots (clove hitch) that aren't even represented but that's not the real problem. I gave it 1 star because following Owen's directions (and not my own knowledge of knot tying) I got only the multiple overhand knot correctly (not even the figure-8!). The Morrow book, which I thought passable, looks like a gem compared to this one...The search continues.
Very helpful book.......2002-10-08
I found this book to be a wonderful resource. It has clear diagrams for each knot, easily followed if one is a beginning knot tyer. It also covers knots not usually found in sailing and climbing (functional) knot manuals. This is a great starter book for those who are not certain they are "into" knotting yet, as it is quite inexpensive. Happy knotting!
Book Description
The only book devoted completely to slicing today's ropes, this fully illustrated, step-by-step guide has been expanded and enhanced in this new edition and now covers wire splices, and splices in Spectra and Kevlar ropes as well as Dacron braid and traditional three-strand. The Splicing Handbook includes every splice project a boater will ever need.
Customer Reviews:
Review of "The Splicing Handbook" 2nd Ed by B. Merry.......2006-02-28
I bought the book because I wanted to splice high-tech yacht rope, especially the 12-strand braids like Amsteel. This review pertains only to splices related to such rope.
The photos are not always of the splice being described (p.84). The illustrations appear to have been cropped to fit the page, which is especially confusing for complex splices (p.88). The hollow braid splice on p.83 results in a weak splice with a bump at a vulnerable location - I believe this is a dangerous splice and that the authors have failed to grasp the workings of the Chinese Finger Puzzle principle mentioned in several places.
Conclusion: don't waste your money. Go to the web sites for Yale, Sampson, and New England Rope to get better illustrations and text for free. Also, study the test results from Layline.com on the importance of tapering the buried eye splice tail.
A good book.......2004-01-09
This is a good and inexpensive book. You'll find a lot of information about splicing, perhaps more than you will ever need.
The problem with a book is that you have to understand how the strands -- and which strands -- lie up next to each other. It's not that easy to figure out the first time around. I learned how by watching my Dad. That gave me an idea how splices are made.
Consider Amazon's software on splicing; ISBN 0970971419 if you just want to learn common splices. It's a software program for beginners to do the basic splices in front of a computer. It's more expensive, though.
The Best Damn Book in the World(about ropes anyway).......2002-07-18
Barbra Merry is a good friend of mine. Shes the one who got me started on ropes and knots and splicing etc... Anyway I have had a chance to skim through her book and read parts and excerpts from her book and it is really good. I've only known Barbra a few months but shes a really nice lady and if you ever have the chance to meet her make sure you make friends because shes the nicest lady you'll ever meet in your life. And if you ever have the chance to tie knots or learn how to splice or learn new knots I urge you to learn it because it is a great hobby and loads of fun. Thats my review about her book but its probably a review about the author.
Chris Anderson
Perfect reference book for professional splicers!.......2002-06-17
The Splicing Handbook is simply one of the best reference works for the working rope splicer and professional rigger. Barbara Merry has provided an excellent book to review rusty skills, to learn a new splice, and as a convenient compendium of splice history to settle any shipyard, boatyard, or construction site argument on how to splice a specific configuration of rope. Ms. Merry is held in high esteem for producing a book on the most difficult technique of rope work - making a proper end termination! Good for her!!
How to splice all sorts of line........1998-02-06
Brief, clear descriptions of how to splice all kinds of traditional and modern line -- braided, plaited, the works. If you're interested in splicing, this is an inexpensive way to cover a lot of ground. Good illustrations.

Customer Reviews:
great for novice or review purposes - concise.......2003-03-18
both my 11 year old and myself have found this book to be a MUST for several reasons: It's clear, and covers the essential knots either a boater or knot-tying hobbiest could need. although the reader is sometimes subject to rely on what a photograph is indicating, the directions along with the photographs are fairly easy to follow. it's fabulous for a novice or if you need to review some forgotten "moves" - the authors make sure to briefly explain the usefulness and helpfulness of the knot. it's fun to work through this book with my daughter - so i recommend this as a unique parent/child activity we enjoy and can put to practical use. i recommend this if you are rusty on the correct way to tie trustworthy, safe nautical knots (in other words, your boat will still be at the dock in the morning.....)
Outstanding Summary of Important Knots and Seamanship.......2002-03-25
Art and Paul Snyder have updated their excellent book on nautical knots, originally published over thirty years ago. The book is not meant to be exhaustive or comprehensive, but offers the right level of detail and a listing of the most useful knots the salty sailor needs to master. A step-by-step approach with clear instructions and photographs makes it easy to learn new knots and other aspects of marlinspike and general seamanship. A must to keep on board.

"Challenging Knots".......2000-08-04
I am a big fan of Budworth's knot books and when I saw a title of "Challenging Knots", I ordered it before it was released.
The book is well put together, with gorgeous illustrations. Unfortunately, I've seen most of them before! It seems that this book is just "The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Knots and Ropework" on the SlimFast plan. The illustrations and text are nearly identical, though with much eliminated in this book.
This is not a collection of "Challenging Knots", a book I'd really like to see Budworth write. It is instead another introductory knot book. I like it, but I liked "Ultimate", so I guess that makes sense. I look forward to Budworth writing a new book someday.

The Wild World of 4-Manifolds
ASIN: 044451452X
Release Date: 2005-07-09 |
Book Description
This book is a survey of current topics in the mathematical theory of knots. For a mathematician, a knot is a closed loop in 3-dimensional space: imagine knotting an extension cord and then closing it up by inserting its plug into its outlet. Knot theory is of central importance in pure and applied mathematics, as it stands at a crossroads of topology, combinatorics, algebra, mathematical physics and biochemistry.
* Survey of mathematical knot theory
* Articles by leading world authorities
* Clear exposition, not over-technical
* Accessible to readers with undergraduate background in mathematics
Book Description
A complete step-by-step guide to making any and every knot there is, and then some. From the Monkey Fist to the Sink Stopper, these detailed descriptions will get you caught in a tangle in no time.
Customer Reviews:
Good for the Road.. I took the Pocket guide and a length of rope with me on my last road trip........2006-03-03
I will probably buy a 2nd copy for my son
Beautifully illustrated.......2005-09-20
The color photographs in this book make it a winner for anyone who is learning to tie knots-- it's easy to see where everything is supposed to go. The knots are broken down by type-- stopper knots, hitches, etc., with several of each type. The directions are clear and easy to follow, and there are explanations of why you might choose to use each knot.
The only downside is that some of the detailed photos are a bit small, though they're still fairly easy to follow.
Good and bad.......2003-02-23
Some fine information from a very knowledgeable and interesting knot expert. Beautifully illustrated and laid out, but the step-by-step illustrations require magnification to be of any utility. I find it difficult to hold a magnifying glass and tie a knot at the same time. Even then, some of those illustrations are with such dark rope that they are still a puzzle. For "bowline on a bight," the illustrations don't follow the text. I lost interest in pursuing that exercise, so I'm not sure how unusual that error is.
The lack of an index is the biggest killer. Isn't an index an absolute must in a book such as this? That deficit is compounded by the hiding of the table of contents, and compounded again by the only actual listing of knots being hidden in, and divided among, the chapter headings. My guess is that to get the book to fit in 256 pages (16 sixteens) the publisher simply dropped the index and stuffed the table of contents into the reverse of the title. Extremely poor choices of where to cut. Either lazy or placing style over utility.
Consider this a "miniature coffee table book," and buy or pass on that basis. Get the "Handbook of Knots" by the same author, or any of several other good knot books, for an actual guide to knots.
Knot for beginners.......2003-02-20
If you thought you learned everything there is to know about knots while you were in the Boy Scouts -- think again!
Before I bought this book, the only knots I knew about where the ones I tied my shoelaces with. And even those knots weren't as effective as I'd hoped.
"The Pocket Guide to Knots and Splices" is the ideal resource for the rope-smith on the go. With a number of knots to choose from, the only difficult part of this book is deciding which knot to try first. I found that the "Sink Stopper" knot does a good job of doing just what it says. However, my attempts to find a productive use for the "Monkey Fist" have produced only disastrous (and painful) results.
Don't be intimidated - grab your substantial length of rope and start tying! Because there's an exciting world of knots waiting for you!
Excellent for beginning knotters!.......2002-04-15
I checked out his first book from the local library, and I was impressed with the photos and detail. So, I figured that this second book would be just as good. It is more than good... it is great! The photos are very colorful, the details are easy to follow, and the book has more content. Plus, the physical size of the book makes it stay open while you have your hands busy with a rope. Now, I leave it on the coffee table with a hank of rope to help entertain guests. Thank you Des Pawson. Your book has brought me a new hobby!
